GORDON ‘BUTCH’ STEWART GETS HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM UCC The late Gordon “Butch” Stewart, business mogul and founder of Sandals Resorts International was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree at this year’s University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) graduation ceremony. The UCC staged a virtual Commencement Exercise for two graduating classes July 18 following the cancellation of last year’s function due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adam Stewart, who accepted the Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration on behalf of his father who died last January, said his father was truly grateful to be selected for the honour when the UCC wrote to him in 2019. “His (Butch Stewart’s) passion for Jamaica, the Caribbean and the business sector was rivalled only

July 2021

by his passion for educating and lifelong learning,” Adam Stewart said of his father.

4

Addressing the ceremony Mr Adam Stewart, referencing his father’s death in January, 2021, noted “although Dad isn’t here to see this, I know he was tremendously happy to receive this honorary degree and the family humbly and graciously accept on his behalf.”

He continued:” Gordon Butch Stewart was committed to Jamaica and the Caribbean. Everything he did, every decision he made and the businesses he created were underpinned by a passion for the development of Jamaica and the Caribbean region to its limitless potential. He had an undeniable knack for business and so it is incredibly fitting that this degree is for Business Administration.” “Training has long been a founding value of Sandals Resorts International and it is this belief in the power of training and educating that led to the launch of the Sandals Corporate University which allows team members to advance and further

their education and skills,” he continued.

Sandals Resorts International Do you think the Caribbean is still handling the pandemic as well as we were a year ago? RAMIZANN WILLIAMS - Public Relations Administrator In all fairness, I would want to say yes and no. We aren’t doing the most “perfect” job at it, but there is and has been some form of hope, so it would be rather unfair to discredit that. I think the problem now is just with the people themselves, everyone wants to have their “own way”, but if proper measures for enforcement and compliance is achieved, we will be well on our way to a new form of normalcy. Let’s also look at it from another standpoint as well; tourism is pretty much back, more and more people are travelling again and yep! You’ve guessed it, they are coming back to the Caribbean, though we are still facing a pandemic, I think that also speaks for itself somewhat.

SUDANE ATKINSON - Concierge: Persons were a bit more careful a year ago versus now; the curfew and other measures that have been put in place are constantly being ignored by many which is leading to an increase in cases.

DONALD WRIGHT - Concierge: I would say the Caribbean region has been one of the most exemplary regions in containing Covid-19. We have been and are

still weathering the storm ( with a few hiccups as it pertains to

adhering protocols). We continue to fight this virus while climbing out of the 2020 recession.

Sandals Grenada Resort & Spa A living room in a pool? Yes, why not? This is yet another brilliant Sandals Resorts design innovation premiering in 2014 at Sandals Grenada Resort & Spa. This focal area nestled into the Pink Gin Pool is wide open, yet intimate. In the evenings, couples are often seen here engaged in private conversations or silently enjoying the invigorating sea breeze that sweeps gently across the pool- intermittently juxtaposed by the warm flames of the fire pit. Occasionally, the area is used as a more communal gathering space for acoustic music serenades. This is one of many romantic and unique spaces to experience at

STYLE MOMENT

Sandals Ochi

When dancehall artiste Elephant Man said, “Thirst is nothing, image is everything” the leadership team at Sandals Ochi obviously took it to heart. Just recently, the managers had their very first get together since the resort’s reopening. This took the form of a brunch, held at Sandals Golf and Country Club. The usually uniformed individuals were dressed to impress, donning vibrant colours indicative of the summer and the vibe.

Roses are red, Georgette’s dress is blue, we think she rocked this look and we know you think so too. Georgette certainly gave everything she was supposed to give. This look is a solid 10. Rich aunty vibe, all day, every day.

Watch Style! Watch Drip! --- Name a more fashion forward General Manager. I’ll wait. Truth is, when it comes to style choices, it doesn’t get better than Mr Kevin Clarke. He is simply a staple in the fashion game. There’s nothing like yellow against melanin. His fit was certainly giving a little monochromatic hotness.

The little black dress--They say every girl should have a little black dress but Peaches took it to another level with

July 2021

this beige scarf and

8

gold accessories. When Papa San said, “Style n’ Pattan”, he was talking about Peaches.

There are very few people in the world that are as fashionable as Nakoy. Talk about an outfit being cut to fit-He wore a white on white ensemble to the brunch and he knocked it out the park.

STYLE MOMENT

As Photoshop Manager at Sandals Ochi, Denise is no stranger to pictures. Apparently she’s no stranger to looking fabulous while striking a pose either. His name is Donovan Slack but this drip was tooooit (tight)! Fabuloso, Chlorox, Tide and Breeze whooo? They have nothing on him as he’s clean from shirt to shoe. Look at the man’s sneakers! Did he even walk around? Clean, boss

of style and one should always have a few denim pieces in their closet. We were certainly feeling Hotel Manager, Gary Holgate’s fit and from the look of things, he was too. This cool drip was perfect for the occasion.

Brighten the Brunch--- Sanchia brought her own sunshine to the brunch. This dress certainly gives uptown picnic vibe. It is also a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. Check out the embroidered sleeves and hem. Sanchia rocked this perfectly.

Bump and Boujee---Everyone who knows Gayonne, knows that fashion is her middle name. Gayonne will always show up and show out. Speaking of show out, check the bump. This mama, rocked her beautiful orange number all too well. Safe to say, she understood the assignment.

Sandals Negril putting the health and wellbeing of team members at the top of the list The Sandals Negril Human Resources team with major support from key departments across the resort hosted its first health fair for 2021. Scores of team members got the opportunity to access health tests along with a host of other wellness provisions from key stakeholders brought to the resort to offer their services free of cost to team members. Among the services offered were HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight/BMIchecks, medical checkups and consultation, ambulance services, fitness sessions and nutritional guidance and the provision of free shakes, natural juices, vitamins, condiments and healthy snacks for persons on the go. The major highlight for many team members were the complimentary massages, manicures, pedicures, makeovers, facials and barber services offered by Executive Ground Ambulance Services Limited (EGAS). There was an evident buzz throughout the resort as employees expressed their appreciation for all that was offered at the

Beaches Negril cook takes resort’s community outreach mandate seriously For Nikeisha Watson, cook at Beaches Negril, giving to the less fortunate makes her feel happy and complete.

July 2021

Watson, who previously worked for a security firm contracted by Sandals and Beaches Resorts, transitioned over to the hotel chain some four years ago as a cook at sister resort Grand Pineapple Negril; after completing the six weeks Hospitality Training Programme.

12

As a security guard, she saw firsthand the work that Sandals Resorts and the Foundation were doing in the community and she had immense respect for the brand.

Throughout her lifetime, she has been known to help youngsters with lunch money, school shoes, text books and other important needs they may have. She also shares her family meals with the elderly in her little district. Her passion for giving back, albeit in her own small way has really given her the deepest pleasure. Watson shared that since recently, she wanted to do more than just give to those in her community. This intense desire to take it a step further was fueled by what she experienced during the pandemic. “Last year was a

THE BUZZ tough year for me and I am sure for many others as well. But I have seen how the Lord has brought us safely through and things are beginning to look brighter. I am overwhelmed with thanksgiving to be back at work and to be able to continue providing for my family. I wanted to show my gratitude by paying it forward. I wanted to do more than I usually would,” she shared.

“These individuals are always on the road asking for money to buy food. Sometimes the monies they get do not go towards food but they spend it on other things that do not benefit their bodies. I always want to give to them when they ask but I honestly believe I work too hard for my earnings to give to persons who won’t use it for their own good. So, I decided the only way I am sure they will use the money I give for food is if I give them the food myself and that is what I did,” she shared. “When Nikeisha shared her plans I was fully on board with her. We work for a company that is committed to helping the less fortunate in our communities and is always encouraging our team members to give a helping hand to others whether it’s a company project or from a personal level. I was happy to see that she wanted to give back in such a meaningful way,” shared Juan Morrison, executive chef at Beaches Negril.

Watson shared that the reaction from the beneficiaries was so heartwarming; “they were filled with so much gratitude. I had a gentleman asking for an extra food box because he hadn’t eaten for two days, he looked to have been recently out of the hospital after losing three of his toes. At one point I was crying. I didn’t know the situation was so bad. We pass them day by day and many times we even pass judgment, wondering if they don’t have family members to care for them and get them off the streets; but until we spend time speaking with them and helping them then we probably won’t ever understand their story. I felt so light and free after doing this and felt so good having had my daughter help me cook and distribute these meals.” Watson has vowed to continue this act of service monthly and wants to impact more persons. She plans on seeking help from Beaches Negril, the Sandals Foundation and others who are willing to come on board and help to make a difference.

July 2021

This desire led Watson to her very own kitchen, where, on her day off, she and her daughter prepared a meal consisting of rice and peas, curried chicken, tossed vegetables, bread pudding along with juice and water. She chartered a taxi to take her around Savanna-La-Mar and neighbouring communities where she served meals to 25 street persons that day.

The Snapshots team at Sandals Royal Caribbean continues to perform outstandingly.
