SANDALS MONTEGO BAY
The historic ribbon-cutting and grand opening of Dalton’s Lounge at Sandals Montego Bay was a momentous occasion that brought the resort together in celebration. Sandals Resorts International’s Chief Operating Officer, Shawn DaCosta, flanked by members of the resort’s executive team, stood proudly with the honouree, Sir Dalton Smith; ready to snip the vibrant ribbon that had adorned the restaurant’s entrance. The name of the lounge pays tribute to the longest-serving team member Sir Dalton Smith who is still actively employed at the flagship resort. The event exemplified the company’s charge towards the future while still reflecting on the legacy of love that is our foundation.

Managers fete team members

Managers at Beaches Ocho Rios are having a competition! They have been placed in groups and are responsible for organising an event to honour team members at the resort each month. This month’s group – headed by General Manager Charles Blacher – shines brightly in their newly-acquired Jamaican shirts as they provided a lavish lunch and offered extraordinary customer service to their team. The team members were not only fed but they were entertained by one of the resident DJs. Managers also used the opportunity to motivate the team.
Heroes Day Celebration As Jamaica celebrated National Heroes Day on October 16, Sandals Ochi Beach Resort brought the Manor Pool deck to life! The entertainment team was attired in the traditional bandana and Jamaican colours as they festively danced and sang to the sweet sounds of the island’s heritage. Jamaica’s traditional band of masqueraders – Junkanoo, performed with high energy and enthusiasm. The guests were happily taken on a journey through the old and new of Jamaica, experiencing a bit of the best of the country’s traditions. ‘Good food neva ration’, as the Hotel Manager, John Miles, and other members of the managerial team served up an abundance of Jamaican treats to include fried green plantains, ackee and saltfish, fritters, sugar cane, jerk chicken, and so much more. The air simply buzzed with buoyant energy as Sandals Ochi Beach Resort honored the legends of Jamaica.
Breast Cancer Awareness Shines at Sandals Ochi
October 2023
In a heartfelt and educational event, Sandals Ochi Beach Resort played host to a Breast Cancer Awareness presentation that left its team members better informed, more knowledgeable and deeply engaged. A team of eight expert doctors from the nearby St Ann’s Bay Hospital, along with a brave survivor who shared a compelling story, took centre-stage to impart crucial knowledge. The doctors’ involvement extended beyond conventional lecturers. They captivated the audience with a remarkable skit that was not only realistic but also practical. The skit emphasized the importance of early detection and awareness, leaving a lasting impression on all team members. The survivor’s story was nothing short of inspiring, bringing tears to the eyes of those present. A symbol of strength, she shared her journey and underscored the significance of regular mammograms, encouraging others to prioritize their health.

Building rapport with the Bar team
The Bar team had an amazing time at their recently-held “building rapport” session. The session was geared towards encouraging the team to be observant of not just their guests’ body language and tone, but to also be able to identify what the guest may need even before it is requested. They also learnt lessons in operating under pressure and the reinforcement of their best practices and standards of operation. The team shared that the session was insightful and that they were left with a new outlook on connecting with guests.
Appreciation for an ‘Elite’ team
In true Sandals South Coast style, appreciation and acknowledgement is always given to those who have earned it. It is against this background that the resort’s Elite Butler Service team were feted to an evening of mouth-watering dinner, entertainment and prizes recently. The award honoured and highlighted the team members in the department who have showcased exemplary performance and those who continue to adhere to standards of not just the department but the resort and company in general.

HUNDREDS ENROLL IN SCU’S HOSPITALITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME IN EASTERN CARIBBEAN Just off the heels of the launch of its Diploma in Hospitality Leadership programme at Sandals South Coast back in August, the Sandals Corporate University has expanded this remarkable and innovative initiative to the Eastern Caribbean. The programme is dedicated to cultivating leaders from within the organisation, and its second cohort was introduced at Sandals Grande St. Lucian in October. A total of 362 Sandals team members in the Eastern Caribbean are participating in this course. Mr Gebhard Rainer, Chief Executive Officer of Sandals Resorts International (SRI), explained that Saint Lucia was selected for the inauguration of the SCU’s second cohort due to several compelling reasons. Among those reasons is that Saint Lucia is the secondlargest operational base for SRI, boasting three resorts and the Cap Estate Golf and

The Buzz
A BAHAMIAN BUZZ! Haad go, ma peeps! It’s our turn to shed some light on what’s been popping at Sandals Royal Bahamian. Truth is, we did a whole lot but I will let you in on just a few of the things we did in October because I believe the editor is giving us just a single page to do all of this. One page bey! Well mudda sick dread! Respect due, nonetheless. Let’s get into it!
Something to pink about! Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness is talked about all across the world and at Sandals Royal Bahamian, it is no less pervasive. The management and staff at the resort recognize how important it is to spread awareness on a phenomenon that has claimed the lives of so many around us. We took the time to do something that would celebrate those who have survived, stand with those who are fighting, and remember those we’ve lost. With that, the resort’s monthly team member awards ceremony was dubbed, “Pink Prestige”. This saw team members donning their pink shirts as that colour is symbolic of the movement. The grand ballroom was all pink from the décor to the food. A few survivors shared bits and pieces about their journey and gave a word of encouragement to those who are currently battling the disease. They also received pink roses at the event. The gesture was well received by the team members who expressed gratitude that the resort took the time to

tackle such a sensitive but very important issue.

The Buzz World Tourism Day! You know when they mention ‘tourism,’ we’re there, even if no one asked for us. Well, St. John’s College did extend an invitation to the luxury-included resort in Cable Beach, and why not? They know we don’t just make an appearance; we make a statement. The school’s tourism department couldn’t let World Tourism Day slip by without hosting a remarkable event, and even though other resorts and tourism entities were in attendance, the Sandals Royal Bahamian team truly stood out. Our booths and tables were swarmed by students, presenting a fantastic recruitment opportunity for our team. We had the chance to engage with the students, particularly the eleventh graders, sharing insights about our industry and resort. We also brought some sweet treats and giveaways courtesy of the Sandals Foundation and Pack for a Purpose.
SRB’s female basketball champs bring the heat In October, we closed the curtains on our inaugural women’s basketball league. What started out as mere fun and jokes quickly became a competitive, nail-biting tournament with the butler team pulling out all the stops before they were stopped by the kitchen team. It is the echoed sentiment on resort that the kitchen team is taking over as they can’t seem to lose at anything. They sullied the butler

female basketball champs. It is now a running joke of the kitchen team members that basketball is too much of an elite sport even for the elite butler team.

The day also marked the official unveiling of a community welcome sign featuring a mangrove theme, made possible through funding from the Sandals Foundation.
