The Sandals Foundation has found another reason to celebrate this year with the NGO copping the award for Responsible/Philanthropic Travel Foundation at the recently held Agents’ Choice Awards Gala in Toronto, Canada. The Sandals Foundation, which marked its 10th anniversary in March this year, was founded by Sandals Resorts International Deputy Chairman, Adam Stewart to expand the philanthropic work of the successful resort chain in the Caribbean. “We remain committed to providing opportunities for the development and sustainable growth of our Caribbean people and the region as a whole. While this remains our focus, we are very pleased to be recognized with this award and thank all those agents who not only voted for us, but also continue to support our efforts in making this a reality for those we serve,” shared Stewart, who is also the President of the Sandals Foundation. The Agents’ Choice Awards were established in 1999 by Toronto-based Baxter Media and its flagship publications, Canadian Travel Press and Travel Courier. Since then, the annual Agents’ Choice Awards have become a highlyanticipated event in the Canadian travel industry and has evolved from a special supplement inserted in the magazines to an actual Gala Awards ceremony held in downtown Toronto over the past two years. This year, a total of 6,512 Canadian agents voted in over 40 industry categories. Sandals Resorts International was also voted as “Favorite Hotel Brand – All-Inclusive” for the 20th year in a row. Earlier this year, the Sandals Foundation was accepted by the Department of Global Communications of the United Nations as one of the organizations across the globe whose efforts are contributing significantly to the implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this association, the Foundation has committed to supporting the 17 SDGs and to raise public awareness about the purposes and activities of the United Nations and issues of global concerns.

Our association with the Department of Communications for the UN solidifies our pledge to continue to work to ensure that the islands that we call home are on track for a sustainable future,” said Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation. Since 2009, the Sandals Foundation has impacted over 840,000 people in Jamaica, St. Lucia, Grenada, Antigua, Barbados, Turks and Caicos and Bahamas through its work in education, the community and the environment.

What to Do WHEN YOU
Make a Mistake at Work As they say, everyone makes mistakes. In many situations, you can correct your error or just forget about it and move on. Making a mistake at work, however, is more serious. It can have a dire effect on your employer. It may, for example, endanger a relationship with a client, cause a legal problem, or put people’s health or safety at risk. Repercussions will ultimately trickle down to you. Simply correcting your error and moving on may not be an option. When you make a mistake at work, your career may depend on what you do next. Here are the steps you can take:
inTouch
Page 7 JUNE 2019
C A R E E R D E V E LO P M E N T even if they do share responsibility for the mistake. In the end, hopefully, each person will be held accountable for his or her own actions.
Admit Your Mistake As soon as you discover that something went awry, immediately tell your boss. The only exception is, of course, if you make an insignificant error that will not affect anyone or if you can fix it before it does. Otherwise, don’t try to hide your mistake. If you do that, you can end up looking a lot worse, and others could even accuse you of a coverup. Being upfront about it will demonstrate professionalism, a trait most employers greatly value.
Apologize, but Don’t Beat Yourself Up There’s a big difference between taking responsibility and beating yourself up. Admit your mistake but don’t berate yourself for making it, especially in public. If you keep calling attention to your error, that is what will stick in people’s minds.
Present Your Boss With a Plan to Correct the Error You will need to come up with a plan to rectify your mistake and present it to your boss. Hopefully, you will be able to put something together before you first approach her, but don’t waste time if you can’t. Reassure her that you are working on a solution. Then, once you know what you need to do, present it. Be very clear about what you think you should do and what you expect the results to be. Tell your boss how long it will take to implement and about any associated costs. Make sure to have a “Plan B” ready, in case your boss shoots down “Plan A.” While making a mistake is never a good thing, don’t miss the opportunity to demonstrate your problem-solving skills.
Don’t Point Fingers at Anyone Else In a team-oriented environment, there is a good chance other people were also responsible for the error. While people are typically thrilled to take credit for successes, they are reluctant to own mistakes. If you can, get everyone to approach your boss together to alert her that something has gone wrong. Unfortunately, you might not be able to make that happen. There are going to be some people who say “it’s not my fault.” It won’t help you to point fingers at others,
inTouch
You want your boss to focus on your actions after you made the mistake, not on the fact that it happened in the first place. Be careful about tooting your own horn, though. Bragging about how you fixed things will not only call attention to your original blunder, it could raise suspicions that you made a mistake so you could swoop in to save the day.
If Possible, Correct the Mistake on Your Own Time If you are exempt from earning overtime pay, get to work early, stay late and spend your lunch hour at your desk for as long as it takes to correct your mistake. This won’t be possible if you are a non-exempt worker since your boss will have to pay you overtime—1 1/2 times your regular hourly wage—for each hour you work over 40 hours per week. You certainly don’t want to stir up more trouble by causing him to violate that requirement. Get your boss’s permission if you have to work longer hours.
Ask Yourself: Why Did This Happen? Once you’ve got the problem in hand and have started your apology tour, you have some space to think more about why this happened. Sometimes mistakes just come out of the blue, in a moment of inattention or poor decision-making. Other times they’re part of a pattern of carelessness, or a lack of caring about the job. So after you’ve started the damage control process, it’s time to figure

Why did it happen? Sometimes mistakes just come out of the blue, in a moment of inattention or poor decision-making. Other times they’re part of a pattern of carelessness, or a lack of caring about the job. So after you’ve started the damage control process, it’s time to figure out why you’re in this situation in the first place.
out why you’re in this situation in the first place. • Did I make this mistake/perform poorly because I don’t care about this job anymore? • Did I make this mistake/perform poorly because I’m overwhelmed by my job, and need to make adjustments? • Did this happen because I don’t have the right skill set, or need to know more about how things work? If you made the mistake was because you’re just not into your job
It might be time to get out. It’s not ideal to quit straightaway—it’s much better to start exploring your options and opportunities before you jump ship. But if you’re already performing at a lower level because you’re unhappy or disinterested, that’s a major red flag. If the mistake was due to you being overwhelmed by your job
Talk to your boss. ASAP. It’s time for a very frank discussion about your priorities, your tasks, and your role. If things don’t change and performance continues to slide, that will be on you, and it will make things even more uncomfortable. Your boss has a strong interest in making
inTouch
sure you perform your best and stay a satisfied employee, so don’t fear the conversation. It might be possible to restructure your daily tasks, or find new ways to do them, so that you’re able to do your job at the level you know you can hit. If the mistakes are happening because you don’t have the right skill set
You need to figure out what you’re lacking, and strategize how to either a) get those skills and knowledge; or b) share responsibilities in a way that works for you and your team. It may be that this is something you can handle on your own (for example, getting trained on a particular kind of software, or taking online seminars about time management). But it may well be that you need help from someone else in your company, and that’s okay. If you need to sit down with someone to understand processes or tasks, do it. If you need help from your boss prioritizing, ask for it. This goes back to showing that you’ve learned from past mistakes, and are trying to get stronger.

him for too long either, as she ensures she keeps everyone abreast with his growth by sending pictures of him every step of the way. Each month, she conducts a photoshoot and every time he does something new, she captures a video that is circulated to Zayne’s aunties and uncles at work. Munroe is not one to cry easily but will in an instant if she learns her son is sick or uncomfortable. She never misses a beat and is often lauded for how great a mother she is. People would often compliment her for how well-groomed and handsome Zayne is and the proud mother’s reply would always be, “It’s called taking care of your child.” She definitely epitomizes excellent parenting.
