NEW Year’s

REVOLUTIONS Here we go again. It’s January and you’re thinking the same things; must lose weight, must save more, must eat better; must sleep more. Sound familiar? It probably does because you’ve been doing the same thing (or variations of it) for years. The problem with these yearly iterations is that they lack resolve. Is there something in January that will make these commitments easier to honor? If you made the same decisions in June would they be any less effective? Let’s consider what we’re asking of ourselves. Unhealthy weight is generally tied to poor eating habits, lack of exercise and lack of sleep. Maintaining a healthy weight however requires a psychological commitment to a healthy, happier life. Saving at a consistent rate is another of your oft broken resolutions that requires a level of commitment that has apparently been escaping you. So what is the solution to your resolution conundrum? How do you finally make January the month that changes everything for better? Stop. Stop putting pressure on yourself and everyone around you every January to live up to resolutions they’ll break by February. Resolutions cannot be accomplished properly by making a commitment once a year. True selfimprovement requires a daily pledge to embrace the superstar staring back at you in the mirror. Set daily goals and celebrate them as you end each day. Nothing will grant you sweeter sleep than knowing you’ve achieved something each day. Eventually you’ll want to challenge yourself. Your next step is to set weekly goals and start shooting for those. At the start of every week make a list of what you want January 2015 www.sandals.com

to accomplish as a citizen of the planet, not an employee, not a parent, not a spouse; as a human being. Make your goals as lofty as possible and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make them all the time, the greatest accomplishments usually take many tries anyway. Usain Bolt got booed. Not many people remember, but the world’s fastest man and one of history’s most celebrated athletes couldn’t catch a break between 2004 and 2006 because of injuries. His solution was to keep going and we all know how that has worked for him. No matter how many times you falter this year, this month, this week or today just remember to keep going. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes:

The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because it’s only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world.
