One-of-a-kind Veterans Service Outreach Center on its way to completion

(Seguin) – A gift to area veterans is only 90 days away from being finished. Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says April is the anticipated timeframe for the construction of the new Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Service Center. The Seguin Daily News has been tracking the progress of this one-of-a-kind service office for veterans ever since it was officially put into motion in 2021.

The idea was to provide as many veteran services as possible under one roof. The center currently remains under renovation and construction at the old hospital and former Head Start building on Weinert Street.

It’s cookie season for the Girl Scouts

(Seguin) – Get your tastebuds ready because it’s Girl Scout cookie time. Cookies are now in the hands of local Girl Scouts. That’s according to local troop leader Denise Crettenden. Crettenden says a shipment of 5,000 cookies arrived in Seguin just a few days ago.

“We have nine of the cookies from last year coming back and then we have a new cookie that people have been talking a lot about and it’s called Rasberry Rally. The girls are not going to have those in their hands. Those are going to be available to order online and we are hoping that people take advantage of that. The other slight changes is that we were one of the last councils in this area to still sell our cookies for $4 last year. They have gone up to $5 a box like most other things but the girls are also getting more money per box for their troops this year as well,” said Crettenden.

The list of cookies this year include last year’s new cookie Adventurefuls; Lemon-Up; Trefoils, Do-si-dos; Samoas; Tagalongs; Thin Mints; S’mores; Toffee-tastic (gluten free) and the new online only Rasberry Rally.

Crettenden says each year, girl scouts work hard selling their cookies and each year, those proceeds go back to help each troop.

Narcotics officers zero in on suspects resulting in drug bust,

recovery of stolen vehicle

(Seguin) – Four vehicle burglary suspects were taken into custody on Interstate 10.

On Tuesday, the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force (GCNTF) conducted a narcotics operation in the 3000 block of IH10 in Seguin. Officials say during the operation, the suspects were located inside of a stolen vehicle from Bexar County. The suspects were identified as Brieson Brown, 22, of McQueeney; Devin Brown, 18, of San Antonio; Rongea Bergen-Savala, 21, of San Antonio and Eric Nolden, 19, from San Antonio.

During a subsequent probable cause search of the vehicle, taskforce officers located a handgun, counterfeit oxycodone

M30 pills, ecstasy pills, THC vape carts, and marijuana.

Brieson Brown was arrested for manufacture delivery of controlled substance PG1 4 Grams

< 200 Grams, unauthorized use of motor vehicle and Unlawful possession of firearm.

Bergen-Savala was also arrested for manufacture delivery of controlled substance PG1 4 Grams < 200 Grams and manufacture delivery of controlled substance PG2 4 Grams < 400 Grams.

Eric Nolden also faces charges of manufacture delivery of controlled substance PG1 4 Grams < 200 Grams.

All four were arrested and transported to the Guadalupe County Jail.

Kutscher says after years in the making, the county is truly grateful to be counting down the final months of construction.

“It’s important to me but it’s also happening because a group of people worked on it together. This has become a vision of the counties and a good group of people for a handful of years. Every project that we accomplish is important and special in its own way. But this one is different because it pertains to veterans, such a large and important part of our community. This project means that veterans are going to have a place to seek out resources, not in some other far away place but at home, somewhere close to them. This is a representation of our responsibility to the people that sacrificed so much to protect us and give us what we have today. So, we are proud to give them this building and proud to do this project for them,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says the project is taking shape as planned and believes the veterans community will be proud of the end product.

“We did not have an open house ceremony date set just yet. We do want to get moved into the building, get our substantial completion from the city and certificate of occupancy but currently at the moment, we have smoothing out, texturing of walls, floating out the sheetrock. We have the majority of our HVAC and duct work in. We’ve got some mechanical, electrical, plumbing things that are being finished. We are going to be getting into the ceiling installation for some of the drop ceiling areas, all the exposed wood ceiling that we are

Recognition of these men and womens’ sacrifices will not go unnoticed with the overall design of the building. Kutscher says the building’s front courtyard alone will be a tribute to all those who have fought and protected our freedoms.

“There are eight flag poles set out in the front of the property that are on the front side of the building which is really going to lay out the entire memorial area that will be all brick paving and the historical artwork and plaque that depicts all the conflicts in our nation’s history and that’s going to be a really special place so this is the initial – if you drive by the building, you’ll get to see the first steps of what that will turn into,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says the new Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center will not only be a true gem for area veterans but perhaps will be setting

“There are not many communities around the country that have facilities set up like this. This is something that has been talked about but not many places have actually gone through and built it. It’s been important to us to kind of provide a facility and resources located in one place, so veterans and families didn’t have to go 60, 70, 80 miles away – drive to another facility to then be rescheduled, sent to two other places and still not have what they need. It was important to us to try co-locate multiple resources and agencies within one building so all those services could be provided in one place. So, we’re excited to do this. There are a few other places around the country that we’ve heard about that have done and have been very successful but even those that have recently opened up so it’s kind of a new model. We believe it’s going to be extremely beneficial to the veterans that are going to be receiving the service,” said Kutscher.

Now although the name is Guadalupe County, Kutscher says the center is open to all American veterans no matter where they live.

“Our priority and commitment first and foremost is to Guadalupe County veterans but the entire intent of this facility is to provide these resources in a convenient matter to all veterans so if there are veterans in neighboring counties that would otherwise have to drive even further and they can come here, then please come. Everyone is welcome,” said Kutscher.

County officials say veterans make up a bulk of residents living in Guadalupe County.

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Lady Panders posted a lopsided victory of their own last night. The Lady Panthers defeated Bandera 65-25 at the Navarro Events Center. With the win, the Lady Panthers are now 7-3 in district and 26-6 overall.

(Bandera) -- The Navarro boys basketball was on the road last night in Bandera. The Panthers took the game into overtime, but lost 69-62. The Panthers fall to 0-8 in district play and they are 6-13 overall.

(Marion) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs were off last night. The Lady Bulldogs will resume their district schedule next week, with a Tuesday match up against Randolph. The Marion girls are now 14-12 overall, and 4-1 in district play.

(San Antonio) -- The Marion boys got a 57-39 district win last night over Great Hearts Monte Vista in San Antonio. With the win, the Bulldogs improve

their district record to 3-4, and they are now 13-14 overall.

(Seguin) -- The Lifegate Lady Falcons were off last night, but they will resume their schedule on Tuesday with a game against Trinity Christian. The Lady Falcons are now 13-2 on the season.

Omicron Booster Could Protect Against Other COVID Variants

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says the Omicron booster shot also protects against mild illness from other COVID subvariants. CDC officials said the Pfizer and Moderna boosters reduce the risk from the XBB subvariants by half. However, that would vary by age, with seniors having only a 42-percent reduced risk. Scientists have said the XBB subvariants are so resilient to antibodies that they could cause another COVID wave.

Psychologists, Sociologists Cite Pandemic, Loneliness And Loss As Catalysts For Mass Shootings

(San Diego, CA) -- Professors and researchers are taking a look at the mass shootings in California and across the nation. University of San Diego Sociology professor Cid [[ sid ]] Martinez said isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic has disconnected people from the institutions or relationships that they need to maintain their mental health. Forensic Psychologist Glenn Lipson says personal loss or fear of loneliness can make some people angry, which they then channel into acts of violence. Sociologists are also looking into why the overwhelming majority of mass shootings are committed by men. Experts also say the increase in gun sales hasn’t helped.

Ft. Worth Twins Successfully Separated

(Fort Worth, TX) -- Doctors at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth have successfully separated 16-week old conjoined twins. AmieLynn and JamieLynn Finley were delivered by C-Section in early October joined from their breast bone to their navels, sharing a liver. The girl’s father, James Finley, says it was a joy to see his daughters in separate beds, laying on their backs for the first time. The 11-hour surgery involved 27 doctors and nurses who trained for months leading up to the operation. Doctors are optimistic about the twins’ recovery.

(Miami, FL) -- Over two dozen people are in jail after a multi-million dollar nursing school scam in South Florida. U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe says thousands of diplomas were sold and about a third are people actually practicing medicine without proper training. The three nursing schools accused of selling thousands of fake nursing diplomas since 2016 are Sacred Heart Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Sienna College of Health in Lauderhill and Palm Beach School of Nursing in West Palm Beach.

The Life Changing Church is now offering a Free Accredited Homeschool Program for adults wanting to earn their high school diploma. It is a self-paced, no classes to attend program. You work around your schedule and at the end of the program you will receive an accredited diploma that is acceptable for college. Tutors are available at no charge. Salvation Army New Office

The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS is now a free digital newspaper published every business day.
