Community tax clinic now underway on TLU campus

(Seguin) -- TLU students are again making sure tax filers don’t have to go at it alone. Texas Lutheran University has announced the start of its annual community tax clinic available two days each week.

Ashlie Ford, TLU’s director of marketing and communications, says the program is completely run by students in the Master of Accountancy program.

“The IRS’s VITA program which is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic has operated for more than 50 years and it offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals including people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.

We see a lot of elderly people in our community utilize this service and it really is a win-win because our students love being a part of this and many of our students have been doing it for several years now. They recognize some of the taxpayers that are returning to receive assistance and we love being able to offer this to the community,” said Ford. Tax clinic, pg. 3

Non-chamber members invited to take a peek into membership benefits

Free Showcase Seguin set for this Thursday at Seguin Coliseum

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce isn’t only encouraging the public to join it for its annual Showcase Seguin event this Thursday at the Seguin Coliseum. It’s also putting out an invitation to all businesses who are not yet members.

This year, the chamber is hosting its Showcase Seguin for free. This will be the first time that the trade show will be free although tickets will still be required to get into the door.

Jenke says the idea of Showcase Seguin is to pair up as many people as possible with local businesses. He says his chamber staff works hard to build their membership and believes that this Thursday’s event is a perfect way for other businesses especially those on the

fence of joining to actually see how it could make a difference in their own operation.

“We’re just busy. This past month, we tied a record that we had from back in the summer with 15 new members so that’s an awesome thing that the ladies are doing, the chamber staff is doing --

making sure that we are out there in the community and talking to those different businesses,” said Jenke.

This year’s Showcase theme is “2023 A Space Odyssey.” Business booths will be decorated and engaging in fun activities that night for three hours. Food, drinks, and door prizes will also be available. Being a member, however, is not all fun and games. Jenke says there’s plenty of rewarding benefits that come from being a member.

“One of the most positive things for being a chamber member is that we advocate for you during those legislative years and this is one of those legislative years and if you went to the chamber luncheon this past week, you got some of the legislative pieces that we are following... Chamber, pg. 3

Seguin Commission on the Arts opens new grant opportunity

(Seguin) -- This year, the Seguin Commission on the Arts is launching its very own grant program to support arts and cultural activities that promote or enhance the arts in Seguin.

Applicants can apply for funding to cover up to 50 percent of their total project cost and the applicant’s match may include cash and in-kind donations of goods and services.

"The Commission's purpose is to support and promote art in our community," said Kelly Follis, Chair of the Seguin Commission on the Arts. "We believe that a grant program is the most effective way to gain a clear understanding of projects in need of support and to most equitably allocate our funds. We look forward to hearing from local artists about how we can assist them in making their dreams a reality for the benefit of our community." Art, pg. 3

Tax clinic, continued.

Due to COVID, Ford says the students were no longer able to sit down with tax filers. Instead, the campus turned the program into a drive-thru system in the Beck Center parking lot to assist as many community members as possible. Ford says that format turned out be a success and will again be used this year.

“After speaking with Professor Sally Cook who oversees the VITA Tax Clinic, we realized that there are so many students who volunteer for this program as a class that it’s making more sense to have it in the Beck Center parking lot because we get so many people from the community, we have a full class for students and faculty there so this allows everybody to have more room and kind of come on a first come, first serve basis,” said Ford.

Ford says the program continues to grow in popularity and will continue to be provided on a firstcome, first serve basis.

“The drive-thru clinics will be offered through April 15, 2023. They will occur on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Beck Center parking lot. Assistance is going to be provided on a first come, first-serve basis and there are no appointments, and we also would like people to know that there will be no clinics March 11-19 since the campus will be closed for Spring Break. If you are not following our Facebook page or Instagram page, you are missing out. We’ve increased the number of followers over the past year. So again, if you want information about some things that are taking place here in the community, the chamber is a great place to go for that information,” said Jenke.

Mats Tame Cougars, Keep Pace in Playoffs

(Seguin) -- Needing a win to stay within striking distance of the 4th and final playoff spot in District 26-5A, the Seguin Matadors took care of business in trouncing the Canyon Cougars 8463 on the basketball court at Goldie Harris Gym on Friday night.

The Mats improve to 5-6 in the district with the victory and remain one and a half games back of 4th place Kerrville Tivy in the district standings. The Antlers were also victorious on Friday night as they beat Pieper 73-41 in Kerrville to improve their district record to 6-4.

Seguin’s smothering defense limited the Cougars to just 17 points in the first half and the Matador offense caught fire scoring 26 points in the 2nd quarter to take a 45-17 lead into the break at the half. Three Matadors scored in double figures in the 1st half as Kevon Williams had 11 points, Jakyari Matthews had 10 points and John Jackson lead the way with 15 points through the game’s first 16 minutes.

“For the majority of the year, we’ve been able to put points on the board. It comes down

to defense.” Seguin head coach Guy Nowlin said after the game. “We played really great defense in the first half. We only turned the ball over four times in the 1st half. That was able to give us the lead there and a nice little cushion to play with in the 2nd half.”

The Cougars came out firing in the 2nd half as they knocked down eight three point shots in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but it was not enough to overcome Seguin’s strong first half performance. Keelan Harris had four of Canyon’s three

pointers as he finished with 12 points for the game, all in the 2nd half.

Seguin’s Devin Matthews kept pace with Harris as he dropped in nine points in the 3rd quarter to finish the game with 17 points. Jackson lead the Matadors with 24 points, while Williams had 15 and Jakyari Matthews finished with 13.

Seguin will hit the road Tuesday to play the 2nd place team in the district, Boerne Champion. The Mats play at last place Pieper next Friday and finish the season with 6th place Smithson Valley at home on February 14th.

Kerrville Tivy will play at 3rd place San Antonio Wagner on Saturday in a makeup game. They will travel to 1st place Veterans Memorial on Tuesday. Then the Antlers play at Smithson Valley next Friday before closing out the season at home against Canyon on Valentine’s Day.

Should the Antlers and Matadors finish tied for 4th place in the district, a one-gam tiebreaker will be played between the teams to determine who goes to the playoffs. Seguin and Tivy split their two games against each other this season.

Jill Biden Visits San Diego

(San Diego, CA) -- First lady Jill Biden visits San Diego Friday and Saturday to discuss the administration’s “cancer moonshot” efforts and initiatives for military and veteran families. Biden will also visit a local health clinic to discuss federal efforts to improve cancer screenings and early detection programs for communities with limited healthcare access. The administration’s moonshot initiative, spearheaded by then Vice President Biden, aims to improve cancer treatments and conditions for patients and to reduce death rates by at least 50 percent within 25 years. Its goals include resuming cancer screenings missed during the pandemic, reducing smoking and getting more patients into clinical cancer trials. Saturday, she will visit the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Veterans Village of San Diego in Oceanside to meet with health care providers and military families.

More Fatal Fentanyl ODs In NOLA Last Year Than Murders

(New Orleans, LA) -- New Orleans saw more deadly overdoses last year than murders. Nearly 500 deaths resulted from overdoses, most of them caused by fentanyl. There were about 280 murders in New Orleans in 2022. The New Orleans Department of Health is offering “Overdose Response” and “Bystander Response Training” classes that instruct people how to identify an overdose and treat a victim with Narcan. Registration for the classes is available at the Health Department’s website.

Abortion Lawsuit Filed

(Charleston, WV) -- The state’s last remaining abortion clinic is filing a federal lawsuit against the state’s abortion law. Women’s Health Center of West Virginia calls the law that went into effect last September as irrational and unconstitutional. The suit is aiming at the provision of the restrictive law that says any allowed abortion would have to be performed in a hospital by a medical professional with hospital privileges.

Santa Clara County Closing COVID Testing, Vaccination Sites

(San Jose, CA) -- Santa Clara County is closing all COVID testing and mass vaccination sites by the end of this month. Officials say the facilities are no longer essential to their pandemic response efforts. This comes as cases remain low and the vaccination rate high. Public health officials say they’re confident with the decision given that at-home COVID tests are widely available. Major local providers like Kaiser Permanente and Sutter health are also offering testing and vaccination services.
