Governor highlights economic success during State of the State address

(San Marcos) -- Texas

Governor Greg Abbott gave his State of the State Address last week in neighboring San Marcos. Abbott gave his speech at Noveon Magnetics, a manufacturing company in San Marcos that specializes in rare earth materials. The governor used the opportunity to tout the state's

economic successes.

“Number one for exports (and) number one for Fortune 500 company headquarters. Our $2 trillion economy makes Texas, the 9th largest economy in the entire world,” said Abbott.

Gov. Abbott says the state's economy remains robust, and it continues to grow and attract new

businesses from outside the state.

“All across our state, business is booming -- from our large metros to rural Texas,” said Abbott.

The governor says overall outlook for the state is positive, and it’s in a very strong position to move forward into the future. State, pg. 3

Local High School Students Will Experience Various Careers Through the Seguin Job Shadow Program

(Seguin) – Here’s a warning if city department heads or some of Seguin’s CEO’s look a bit younger tomorrow. That’s because local high school juniors and seniors will be trading in their textbooks and classroom lectures for real on the job experiences. Shadowing local business professionals in a wide array of occupations, while experiencing careers at different Seguin businesses will all be part of the fourth annual Seguin Job Shadow Day in Seguin.

The Seguin Job Shadow Day is a collaborative effort between the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD and Marion ISD.

Participating businesses include Caterpillar, City of Seguin, CMC Steel Texas, Core Veterinary Compounding Pharmacy, Dietz Flower Shop, Funky Monkey Vintage Venue, GBRA, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Lone Star Home Solutions, Niagara Bottling, Republic Plastics, Schulze’s Pit

Room, Seguin Fire Department, Seguin Independent School District, Seguin Police Department, Tier One Dental, and United Alloy.

The day provides high school students with an opportunity to go to work with the pros, and explore a wide range of jobs, learn about various job skills, ask questions, and learn first-hand the responsibilities and rewards of employment in a variety of careers.

“Job shadowing is a career exploration activity that offers students a chance to spend time with a professional currently working in their career field of interest,” said Josh Schneuker, executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. “Seguin Job Shadow Day is a great opportunity for Seguin High School students to learn more about a day-in-the-life of a career they are interested in pursuing. On this day, students are exposed to the daily responsibilities and challenges of the job. This Seguin Job Shadow Day gives

students a chance to experience those challenges as they happen and reflect on them in real-time with a professional in that career field. In many cases, the individual being shadowed will become a mentor for the student as they continue their path toward a career. We appreciate our partnership with SEDC on this event and others. Without their hard work, our students wouldn't have access to this experience."

The Seguin Job Shadow Day was planned in conjunction with Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, a public awareness campaign that city officials say takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE, as well as the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs across the country.

CTE is designed to directly prepare students for high-wage, high-demand careers that cover many different fields, including health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, management and many more.

The show followed “an animated, blue-spotted dog named Blue as she leaves a trail of clues/ paw prints for the host and the viewers, in order to figure out her plans for the day.”

The program was described as the highest-rated show for preschoolers on American commercial television and was critical to Nickelodeon’s growth. It is still identified as “one of the most successful, critically acclaimed, and ground-breaking preschool television series of all time.”

According to TLU’s website, “as a speaker, Burns refines and re-examines the message of empowerment and exceptionalism he delivered to a generation of children-carrying the thoughtful, care-driven conversation he began in their childhoods into their nowhoods as they struggle with the demands and realities of adulting.”

College Football Power Will Get Seguin’s McLeod

(Seguin) -- Jackob McLeod was among a trio of Seguin High School seniors who announced their college football commitments last Thursday at the school.

Joining teammates Devin Matthews and Hayden Ross, McLeod signed his National Letter of Intent in front of a crowd gathered at the Seguin Student Activity Center.

McLeod put his name down on a commitment to play football at the University of Mary HardinBaylor in Belton. The Crusaders have won Division III national championships in 2016, 2018 and 2021 and McLeod says that winning tradition at UMHB drew him to the college.

“You look at their past, they made it to semifinals last year and everybody was like ‘what happened, like why did you only go to the semifinals?’” McLeod said. “At the end of the day, it’s semifinals and that’s good. Some teams don’t even make it there. It’s a great program and I’m proud I’m able to play there.”

McLeod says he plans to major in sports management at UMHB and would like to get into coaching after his playing days.

A captain on the Seguin defense, McLeod was lost for the season with an ACL injury in the first half of the Matador’s third game against Laredo

United. The senior defensive end had two sacks along with a tackle for loss in two plus games before his injury. McLeod also suffered an ACL injury in his sophomore season, but was able to overcome both injuries to make it to the next level.

Seguin Athletic Director and head football coach Craig Dailey said McLeod showed leadership in propping up his teammates despite being out for the season.

“He lead from the sideline. He was at practice everyday. A lot of kids would feel sorry for themselves and he was there everyday supporting his teammates and being a great team captain.” Dailey said “He’s already started jogging and straight line running. (His injury) hasn’t set him back. It’s just a testament to his work ethic.”

In addition to McLeod’s signing, Matthews signed with Texas A&M-Commerce and Ross committed to Southwestern University during the event last week at the high school.

Born on May 30, 1940 to Hugh Leonard Ranft and Minna Marburger Ranft.

Died February 15, 2023

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son and numerous close friends.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Venave Ivy Ranft and their 5 children, Deborah Ranft, Cynthia Riebe (James), Kevin Ranft (Jamie), Brent Ranft, Stephen Ranft (Jenifer) and many beloved grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. As well as his siblings Larry Ranft, Joan Bowman (Mark), Mindy Walden, numerous in-laws, relatives and friends. While many knew him for his diligent appliance repair, many more knew he was dedicated to teaching God’s Word to any who wanted to learn. He was loved for his generous, outgoing personality and helpful disposition. He was known for using the Bible to “set things straight” while also using it to “bind up the broken-hearted.”

He will be remembered for those qualities and his hard work in serving to promote God’s will here on earth. We are confident that the words found in Nehemiah 5:19, “do remember me favorably, O my God, for all that I have done in behalf of this people” can be said with Jim in mind. We know sometime in the near future, we will once again see his broad smile, hear his booming voice singing wholeheartedly and feel his warm embrace as he begins to engage us in conversation over a shared meal.

His memorial service will be held in person at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1367 Eastwood Dr Seguin TX 78155 on February 25, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Callaway

Sheryl Louise (Davis) Callaway, 74, of Seguin, Texas passed away in New Braunfels, Texas on February 18, 2023. Sheryl was born in Leesville, Louisiana on December 11, 1948 to Mildred and Melvin Davis.

Sheryl grew up on the White Sands Missile base and later graduated from Las Cruces High School in New Mexico. She then went on to perform secretarial duties for the military at Fort Sam Houston and later worked for the San Antonio Post Office from which she retired after 27 years of service. She enjoyed horseback riding and was a proud member of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s mounted posse.

Sheryl is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Davis and Mildred (Craig) Davis and sister, Carol Lemmen Coleman. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jimmie Callaway. They married on October 23, 1999. She is further survived by her brothers, Butch and Keith Davis; sister, Gayle Rosson; sons, Greg Garzonie and wife Mary Garzonie, Mark Garzonie and wife Kat Garzonie; stepchildren, Lacie Tucker and Travis Callaway; and five grandchildren, Blake, Jackson, Jacob, Samantha, and John.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Goetz Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service officiated by Pastor Paul Theiss will follow at 6:00 p.m.

George William Start, age 90 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 9, 2023 at Windsor Nursing Home in Seguin. George was born on December 4, 1932 in Burr Oak, Michigan to Kathryn (Wert) and Howard W. Start.

George retired from the State of Michigan Civil Rights Department in 1988. He and his wife Isabel (Izzy) moved to Seguin, Texas where his second career was in professional photography. He and Izzy worked together as C & S Photography and were prominently known for their photographing of many weddings and civic events throughout Seguin and surrounding communities until 2008.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 32 years, Isabel “Izzy” Cabello Start (d. 2015), his parents.

Survivors include his sons, Gary Start and Larry Start; daughter, Connie Hepler; sister, Alice Palmer; special caregivers and friends, Karen Rust and Betsy Roof; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Carolyn Zillmann Schultze, age 81 of Seguin, passed away on February 17, 2023. Carolyn was born on November 18, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas to Nelda Marie (Wolter) and Walter George Zillmann. She was a life-long member of Redeemer Church in Zuehl.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Schultze and her parents.

Carley, age 89 of Seguin, passed away on February 19, 2023. Evelyn was born on February 6, 1934 in Guadalupe County to Alma (Greiner) and Gottlieb Grimm.

Evelyn was a 1952 graduate of Seguin High School. She was employed at Hexcel and Wells Fargo Bank before retiring. After retirement she enjoyed baking, “Days of Our Lives”, seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and getting her “hair done”.

Dominga Rosas Brown, age 82 of Seguin, went to be with her Lord on February 18, 2023. Dominga was born on September 22, 1940, in Seguin, Texas to the late Guadalupe and Hilaria Rosas.

Sharon Louise Finch, 75, formerly of Seguin, was called home to her Lord and savior on Friday February 17, 2023. She was born in Tupelo Mississippi on February 1, 1948 to Daniel J. Morris and Joan Louise (Lawson) Morris.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel, 165 Tor Drive Seguin, TX 78155 followed by funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband R.F. Finch Jr., and her brother Keith Morris.

She is survived by daughter, Wendy and husband Gerrit Hoogakker of Rincon, GA; son RF Finch III and wife Jacque of Spring, TX; grandchildren Joshua Finch, Ariana and Ethan Hoogakker; brothers Scott, Randy, and James Morris; extended family members, and grand pets.

Sharon was married to RF Finch Jr. for 48 years. She served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. She also worked Civil Service for the Department of the Army for 23 years, retiring in 2004. She was a founding member

of The American Society of Cake Decorators in 1979. She was also a 40 year plus member of the Masonic Organization - Eastern Star.

Sharon had a heart that was larger than life. People often commented on how genuine her smile and character were. She was high spirited and brought joy to the lives of others through that same spirit. One of her greatest traits was the value and importance of family and friendship. She always treated others as part of the family. Those that had the privilege of knowing her well would often consider themselves family over friend. She will truly be missed; however, we take great comfort in knowing that heaven has been blessed with having such an angel to watch over us.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who have given support, assistance, and loving care through her medical ailments. A special thanks to her neurologist Dr. Allison Boyle who cared for her deeply. Also, a special thank you to the staff at Spring Creek Village who provided the most amazing care to her and the comfort provided to the family during her time there.

Maria B. Luna was called Home to the Lord on February 14, 2023 at the age of 87. She was born on October 22, 1935 to Maria (Salazar) and Federico Bencomo in Seguin, Texas.

Maria was a hardworking woman. She was employed at Holly Farms for many years, in addition to several other jobs. She enjoyed going dancing in her younger days with her husband and other couples.

Maria loved her children deeply. She went out of her way to be sure they came home to hot meals even when her children were grown, married, and no longer living at home. She was a God-fearing woman and prayed for God to watch over her children and their families.

Mom will be deeply missed but we are left with the comfort and confidence that she has arrived to Heaven where she will sing and dance once again in the company of he loved ones that are joyful to welcome her in heaven.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, Federico and Maria; sons, Guadalupe B. Luna, Jr., Henry B. Luna (Christina Luna, surviving) and daughter, Lucia L. Gallegos (David Gallegos, surviving).

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 70 years of marriage, Guadalupe M. Luna; children, David B. Luna and fiancé, Anita Mindieta, Gloria Gallegos (late husband Robert), and Angie Torres and husband Frank. 26 grandchildren, 60 greatgrandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren on the way; sister, Virginia Contreras; half-sisters, Olivia Jackson, Ofelia Ybanez as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ohio Gov: Water Drinkable,

Air Breathable

(East Palestine, OH) -- Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says the water in East Palestine is drinkable and the air is breathable after a train derailment caused a toxic chemical spill. DeWine said residents who get water from the village can consume it, but if a person has their own well water, they should wait until it gets tested before drinking or using it. The governor said the state is setting up a clinic for those who are experiencing symptoms since the derailment happened earlier this month.

Senators Brown, Vance Call For EPA Monitoring Of East Palestine Water

(Cleveland, OH) -- Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown and Republican J.D. Vance of Ohio are calling on state and federal environmental-protection agencies to monitor dioxin-levels in East Palestine. In a bipartisan letter sent to the respective heads of each agency, both Ohio lawmakers expressed concern that “burning large volumes of vinyl chloride” could pose a significant health hazard to area residents as the compound reportedly prompts the formation of toxic chemicals that are dispersed into area water sources. Authorities say exposure to these chemicals can cause cancer, contribute to reproductive and developmental issues, and damage the body’s immune system.

Pentagon To Allow Service Members 3 Weeks Leave For Abortion Travel

(Washington, DC) -- The Pentagon will allow service members up to three weeks of leave to travel for abortion and other non-covered reproductive health care. That was included in a slate of new policies announced by the Defense Department. The three-week leave policy applies to service members receiving or accompanying a military spouse or dependent for non-covered reproductive health care, including abortion and assisted reproductive technology. Commanders and other authorities are urged to grant requests for leave unless it interferes with what the policies call the proper execution of the military mission. They’re also directed to “act promptly and with discretion.”

CDC: Nearly Half Of U.S Kids Don’t Eat Daily Veggies

(Atlanta, GA) -- Almost half of young children in the U.S. don’t eat a daily vegetable. That’s according to the CDC, which also found that about one in three kids don’t get at least one fruit in their daily diet. The results come from more than 18-thousand responses from parents to the 2021 National Survey of Children’s Health. They relayed what their kids between the ages of one and five years old ate the previous week. Nearly 60-percent of parents said their child consumed a sugar-sweetened drink during that time.
