Toast to Texas celebration to be held at Sebastopol House

(Seguin) – Seguin will again honor the past by telling the story of the great state of Texas and how it won its Independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. The birthday of the sovereign nation of the Republic of Texas will again be celebrated today on the steps of the Sebastopol Historic House with the annual Toast to Texas Celebration. Leading the city-wide celebration will be members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Abishai Mercer Dickson-Seguin Chapter and the city of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department. Inviting folks onto the lawn of the local historic house is Julie Sheldon, the president of the Daughters of the Republic. She says together, the community will reflect back at all those who fought for Texas as well as those 59 delegates who186 years ago, gathered at Washington on the Brazos to sign the Texas’ Declaration of Independence Texas, pg. 3

Newest, latest episode of Seguin Today Podcast now available

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Today Podcast turned six months this week with the release of its latest program. Over the course of the past few episodes, the podcast has joined in community events and has had sit-down chats with its staff, all while developing a show format that remains flexible enough to tell all the stories of Seguin and the surrounding areas.

Jarred Kindles is one of the hosts of the Seguin Today Podcast and is also KWED’s digital media producer. He’s also the voice listeners hear on the news every day at 5 pm.

“I get on the air and do the 5 o’clock news every day,” Kindles said. “There’s a certain pressure there because it’s live, but the biggest difference is that those stories are more immediate. What we’ve been trying to do on the podcast is dig into the deeper stories we cover and tell a more complete narrative take on it than you normally get in the newspaper or on the radio. The biggest appeal of the podcast, I think, is that we include music and sometimes sound effects in the audio. We work really hard to make it feel like you’re experiencing the story as you’re listening to the show.”

This month, one of the longer stories in the episode is about a pair of local girls who show pigs for 4-H and FFA. He said they didn’t need to add many sound effects to that story, or another about the Seguin High School construction class.

“Normally, we try to add in sound effects to help transport you to the setting of the story,” Kindles said. “This month, our stories do that own their own, and we had to kind of embrace the ambient noise of the environments in which we were recording. For example, during the pig story –– we were in the hog barn at the county youth show, and there was pig noise the entire time because it just couldn’t be avoided. So, when you’re listening to the podcast, you’re getting the same authentic experience we had while there, which I think is really cool.”

“March 2, we will be celebrating Texas Independence Day – celebrating 170 years ago where those (men) were putting their lives on the line and so we are here on that day to honor the heroes and ancestors who fought to make Texas an independent state,” said Sheldon.

Sheldon says for years the celebration has gathered folks from throughout the area. She says together, they have continued one of the most significant celebrations for Texans across the world.

“Our chapter began hosting this annual event since 1986 with the assistance also of the city parks department. They have been a great support helping us put on the event. It’s just a very moving tribute. Local dignitaries and community members and students from local school districts will be participating in the ceremony. The master of ceremonies will be (State Representative) John Kuempel – a tradition that he has continued from when his father Edmund Kuempel served as honoring master of ceremonies,” said Sheldon.

Sheldon says this year’s celebration will again include a host of participants.

“Highlights for this year will again be an ROTC group from Seguin High School. They will be posting the colors. A member of the Navarro High School band will be playing the Taps. Robin Dywer, community member, he will honor us again as he has in the past giving a very moving tribute of reading the William B. Travis letter from the Alamo asking for reinforcements support. Dottsy Dwyer will lead those in attendance in singing Texas Our Texas and Clint Taft will provide some musical entertainment,” said Sheldon.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse will also be there to deliver a proclamation.

But perhaps the most featured event is the raising of spring water in a Toast to Texas. She says the toast will be led at exactly 2 p.m. Thursday.

“Attendees will be given a bottle of spring water as they have in the past to raise in a toast that was written by Historian Joe Frantz that will be read by (Guadalupe County) Judge Kyle Kutscher,” said Sheldon. Ensuring a celebration for all Texans, Sheldon say the group has again decided to pair up with Seguin Radio KWED.

Sheldon says this year will be the third year in which the Toast to Texas program will be broadcasted by Seguin Radio KWED. She says two years ago, the group relied on the radio station to bring the program to the public during COVID. It has since been enjoyed over the airwaves and will again continue as a tradition.

The ceremony begins at 1:30 pm. Thursday followed with the toast at 2 p.m. along with the ringing of area church bells.

The program is free and open to the public. Schools, businesses, and community members are encouraged to also toast to Texas wherever they are at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sebastopol House is located at 704 Zorn Street in Seguin.

Proceeds from the Swing for Seguin Youth Services charity golf tournament will go toward this year’s Seguin Leadership Class of 2023 project. Project priorities include roof repair, van repair, and sports equipment along with additional needs such as food assistance and other upgrades.

Leal Honored as SCAC Hitter of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran softball’s Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/ Mary Carroll) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Hitter of the Week, the conference announced today.The sophomore infielder claimed the first weekly honor of her career with a stellar offensive performance against Hardin-Simmons and No. 20 Babson.

The shortstop went 6-for-9 (.667) with an RBI, four stolen bases, and four runs scored. On the weekend, she tallied a .727 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage.

In the field, she was responsible for seven putouts, three assists and one error, maintaining a 0.910 fielding percentage in four games started.

Leal’s conference recognition marks the second consecutive week in

which a Bulldog has been bestowed a weekly honor; Ashlyn Strother was named SCAC Pitcher of the Week on February 20.

Oneita Jo Owens Parsons Fraser, 99, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, February 11, 2023, in Seguin, Texas. A memorial service will be held at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, Texas, on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. A private interment in the Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in Wichita Falls, Texas will be held at a later date.

Oneita was the youngest of three children born to Randolph Lee and Callie Mae Owens in Vernon, Texas, March 18, 1923. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1940 and married John V. Parsons in 1941 in Electra, Texas and lived there until 1947 when John, Oneita and their three boys moved to Alice, Texas. Their daughter was born in 1952 in Alice, Texas. Oneita was a stayat-home mom raising their four children as most women did at that time. John passed away with cancer in 1961 which required Oneita to go to work to support her four children until they finished school. She then married Milton D. Fraser in 1978 and they lived in Sunrise Beach, Texas until his death in 1994. Oneita then moved to Seguin, Texas in 1997 to be close to her daughter, Debbie and became a member of First Baptist Church Seguin. While raising her family in Alice, she was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Alice and spent many years teaching children Sunday School classes and working in the church nursery during Sunday services.

Allen Louis Harborth, a 14-year Veteran of The United States Marine Corps and resident of McQueeney, Texas went into the loving arms of Jesus on Tuesday, February 14th 2023 at the age of 82.

He was loved by all who knew him.

Allen was born on November 5th 1940 to Clara and Gilbert Harborth in Beeville, Texas. Allen was a loving, loyal, husband, father, grandfather, friend and devoted servant to Jesus.

Allen is proceeded in death by his father Gilbert Harborth, his mother Clara Harborth, baby sister Alice Harborth and his older sister, Gladiola Harborth.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Inna Harborth, 4 children, Gary Harborth, Rodney Harborth, Tammy Stanford, Craig Harborth and his daughter in-law Michelle Harborth; his grandchildren Daniel Stanford, Brandi Wilt and her husband Johnathan Wilt, Madelyn Harborth and Bryce Harborth; his great grandchildren: Jase Wilt, Everett Wilt, Chloe Wilt, Zane Wilt and Ivy Wilt.

The memorial service with military honors will take place on Sunday, March 5th at 10:00 am at The American Legion Post 245 located at 618 E. Kingsbury St. Seguin, Texas, 78155.

She and Milton were also devoted members of the Sunrise Beach Baptist Church while living there. She and Milton traveled extensively during their life at Sunrise Beach, traveling all over the United States in their RV motor home visiting as many of the different states as they could. They also enjoyed their garden and raised many different fruits and vegetables that they shared with family and neighbors. And they enjoyed spending time boating and fishing on Lake LBJ.

She is preceded in death by her parents Randolph Lee and Callie Mae Owens of Vernon, Texas, a sister Vernalee Oliver of San Bernadino, California, a sister Audrey (Homer) Haseloff of Lockett, Texas, husband John V. Parsons of Alice, Texas, husband Milton D. Fraser of Sunrise Beach, Texas, and son Jan L. Parsons of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. She is survived by son Gilbert R. (Lois) Parsons of Round Rock, Texas, son Loren J. (Betty) Parsons of Bryan-College Station, Texas, daughter Debbie A. Koehn of Seguin, Texas, granddaughter Ashley (Jason) Parsons Coggins and great grandson, Sam Coggins of Houston, Texas, nephew Jonathan Haseloff of La Vernia, Texas and niece Pamela Haseloff Murrell of Vernon, Texas.

“Tom” R. Stout, age 82 of Seguin, passed away on February 20, 2023. Tom was born on September 24, 1940 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Myrtle Estelle (Cox) and William R. Stout.

As a child, he grew up in Wichita Falls. Tom and his wife Annette married on September 20, 1981 at Faith Lutheran Church. For several years he worked for the Carrolton Police Department. Tom then moved to Seguin where he met Annette and owned and operated Tom’s Automotive. After retiring from the automotive repair business, he worked for Texas Lutheran University.

Tom is preceded in death by his son, James Stout, his parents and his brother William “Billy” Stout.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Annette Stout; children, Quinn Stout and his wife Sandra (Seguin, TX), Yvonne Myers and her husband Matt (Omaha, NE); Michelle Murr and her husband Drew (College Station, TX); Mary Flippin and her husband Brad (Seguin, TX); grandchildren, Paul and Claire Myers, Harper and Stout Murr, and Rylee, Lyndee and Kambree Flippin; sisters, Norma Helmer, and Karen Dailey and her husband Clarence; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Our loving mother, Marceille (Marci) Vaughn, age 97, passed from this Earth to her heavenly home on February 24, 2023. She was born December 1, 1925 to Ben and Emma Meyer in Westhoff, Texas. Marceille is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Walter Vaughn, Jr. and her grandson, Gregory Thomas.

She is survived by her children, Sandra Thomas, Brenda Vaughn, and Trey Vaughn, her grandchildren, Andy Thomas and wife Michelle, Jason Roberts and wife Suzann, Marci Russell and husband Richard, and Lelon Vaughn, as well as 6 great grandchildren, Callum, Nathaniel, and Alexander Roberts, Tristen Thomas (Justin Stark), Kadence Vaughn, and Gabe Thomas. She also had 2 great-great grandchildren, Imery and Lexi Stark. She is also survived by her sister, June Nell Schwab and her nephew, Joey Schwab (Norma Jean Higgins)

Marci was a homemaker, wife, and loving mom during her life. She made her daughters’ clothes, maintained a garden, canned, and enjoyed being with her family. She was a fantastic cook, hosting countless meals at their home in McQueeney. When her kids grew up and dad retired, they moved to Rockport where they spent their time fishing, playing cards, travelling, and just enjoying each other’s company.

They eventually moved back to Seguin to be closer to family. After Dad passed, Mom remained in their home and finally moved to Seguin Assisted Living where she enjoyed playing Bunco, Bingo, and going to the church services. In 2021, she moved to Remarkable Healthcare where she resided until her passing.

As often as we could, we would go visit her sister, June Nell Schwab, for some “sister time”. They were always great days!

Mom was such a kind and generous woman; she will be missed so much. Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Price officiating. Harold James Bogisch passed through death to eternal life on February 25, 2023 at the age of 91. Harold was born on November 15, 1931 to Pastor Siegfried A. Bogisch and Leona Hill Bogisch in Temple, Texas.

He is survived by his five children, Laurie Bogisch Perryman, Tim (and Jo Ann) Bogisch, Tammy Bogisch, Steven Bogisch and Karen Bogisch, grandchildren Thomas Jefferson Perryman IV (and Jenna), Angela Perryman, Tiffany (and Alex) Mireault, Ashley (and Thomas) Goins, and Brandon Bogisch, and two great grandchildren, Madelyn Mireault and Josephine Mireault.

Harold was a 1949 graduate of Seguin High School, received a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Lutheran College (now University) in 1953, and a Master of Education degree from Southwest Texas University (now Texas State). He served as a teacher and administrator in North East Independent School District in San Antonio and Vice President for Development and Public Relations at Texas Lutheran College from 1969 to 1984. Harold was Co-Founder and Co-Owner of Charity Funds Unlimited, a professional fund-raising consulting firm, which served over 75 clients in seven states and five causes in Seguin over a 20-year period. After retirement he became an active community volunteer. He was co-founder of the Seguin Unit of the Salvation Army, including serving 12 years as its president. He was also active in the Guadalupe County Detention Ministry serving on the board and leading Bible studies community in the Guadalupe County Detention Center. He was involved with other local organizations including 15 years in the Seguin Noon Rotary Club and as a board member of the Silver Center. Harold’s faith was an important part of his life and something he shared with others. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, serving as church council president and on various church committees.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sherline Marquardt Bogisch, whom he married on August 25, 1956, his parents Siegfried and Leona Bogisch, sister Evelyn Ruth Bogisch, and son-in-law Mike Perryman. After their children left home, Harold and Sherline enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including visiting each of the 254 county courthouses in Texas and 45 of the state capitols, including two trips to Alaska. The family would like to thank the Visiting Angels and their wonderful caregivers who provided compassionate care for Harold for the last two years, especially Kyleen, Crystal, Bernice, Sarah and Charlene, as well as Guadalupe Regional Hospice and his hospice nurse Cindi.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Stan Meyer and the Rev. Daniel Cave officiating. Join us for a celebration of life for Adrian H. Hernandez, age 87, of Seguin who passed away on February 26, 2023. He was born on April 15, 1935 in Seguin to Julia (Flores) and Pedro Hernandez. Adrian proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Washburn (aka 108) in the South China Sea.

Adrian was very well known and loved by many. He never met a stranger; everyone was a friend. He was a great storyteller and would always say “Wait a minute…one more thing”. He would gladly give you the shirt off his back. He worked at SMI for many years. He had many skills and there wasn’t anything he could not fix.

Adrian was so proud and thrilled to learn that he was receiving his 60-year sobriety chip from Alcoholic Anonymous. He was so committed that he opened a half-way house for recovering alcoholics with the help of some other well-known citizens in Seguin. It was a dream come true to help so many people from all walks of life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Juan (Big John) Hernandez, Pete Hernandez, Beto Hernandez, and a grandson Gilbert Buentello Jr.

Survivors include his former wife and dear friend Amelia Hernandez; children and spouses Mary Lou and Steven Hennington, Leticia and Andrew Juarez, Ralph Hernandez and companion Theresa Rodriguez, Adrian A. Hernandez and Duane Dietz and Maria Hernandez; 2 sisters-in-law Alice Haley and Rosa Hernandez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other loving friends and family members.

Health Clinic Opens For PA Residents Impacted By OH Train Derailment

(Darlington Twp. PA) -- A health clinic is opening in Pennsylvania today to help residents impacted by the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio earlier this month. The site will serve residents from ten a.m. to eight p.m. at the Darlington Township Building, which is across the border from the wreck. The clinic will remain open through March 10th. Crews are still working to remove hazardous waste from the site and transport it elsewhere.

CDC Warns Of Rise In Drug-Resistant Bacteria

(Undated) -- The CDC is warning the public of an increase in drug-resistant bacteria called Shigella [[ shuh-geh-luh ]] . The agency is issuing a health advisory, saying it’s hard to treat certain drug resistant strains and its easily transmissible via sex, surfaces, or contaminated food and water. The CDC says it’s starting to see more cases in adult populations even though shigellosis typically affects young children. Symptoms can include fever, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that is bloody.

Link Between Fat And Brain Health

(San Antonio, TX) -- A groundbreaking new study is linking obesity to Alzheimer’s Disease. A genetic similarity revealed about 30-percent of the genes linked to Alzheimer’s are activated by obesity. Researchers at the University of Texas say this is why Alzheimer’s is more frequent amongst adults who experience obesity in midlife. It’s proof, they add, that people in their 40s and 50s need to slim down, as a way to keep their brains healthy.

A New Study Suggests Eggs Are Good For The Heart

(Undated) -- A new study suggests eating eggs may be good for the heart. According to the journal, Nutrients, eating one to three eggs each week could reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular disease by 60-percent. People who ate four to seven eggs cut the risk of heart disease by 75-percent. The study was conducted with more than three-thousand healthy folks in Greece.
