GRMC recognized nationally for emergency care

(Seguin) – When it comes providing emergency care, GRMC is again officially ranked in the Top 9 percent of hospitals throughout the United States.

For the second year in a row, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care by the Women’s Choice Award®. America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare.

Seguin ISD joins voice asking state to pause changes to state accountability system

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is now one of 250 Texas school districts and education organizations who are asking the Texas Education Agency to pause its planned “refresh” of the A-F Accountability System that would “retroactively increase the bar for College, Career and Military Readiness by 47 percent. The CCMR is one of the elements that helps to determine a school or district’s overall rating.

Together the school districts submitted a letter to the state including to Texas Governor Greg Abbot.

Although the attempts by the state are said to help “refocus on goals that directly address postpandemic student needs” and to “allow Texas to leverage lessons

learned over the last five years to improve the rigor, transparency,

change and that’s the redesign of the STAAR exam.

New Braunfels HS teacher arrested for improper relationship with student

(New Braunfels) –A New Braunfels High School teacher and former Seguin ISD teacher and coach is behind bars after allegedly having an improper relationship with a student, a second-degree felony. The teacher, 41-yearold Bryant Shephard was arrested on a warrant Tuesday afternoon.

The charge stems from an investigation conducted by the New Braunfels Police Department Criminal Investigations Division after Shephard, while serving as a teacher at New Braunfels High

School, was observed having inappropriate contact with a female student while on campus.

NBISD officials notified NBPD of the incident on Thursday, March 3 and detectives immediately

began their investigation. That investigation led to the arrest warrant which was served by members of the US Marshal’s Lone Star Fugitive Task Force.

Following his arrest, Shephard, who was located at an address in San Antonio, was transported to the Bexar County Jail without further incident and bond was set at $250,000. Shephard is scheduled to be transferred to the Comal County Jail.

It’s apparently been sometime since Shephard taught in the Seguin ISD. From 2009 to 2017,

he worked at Seguin High School as a math teacher, special education teacher and soccer coach. Shephard also served as the girl’s cross country coach from 2013 to 2014.

NBPD officials say the investigation into this case is ongoing, and Shephard potentially faces additional charges. Anyone who believes they are, or someone they know may be, a potential victim of this suspect is encouraged to contact the New Braunfels Police Department at 830-221-4100.

The TEA states that one of the goals of the A-F Accountability System as a whole “is to ensure that no forced distribution exists and that all schools have the opportunity to achieve an A rating.” As a result, the districts state that “it is perplexing that the TEA would use the justification that too many schools are receiving an A for CCMR to raise the cut score.”

In their letter to the state, the district’s state, “these significant changes to the cut score for CCMR will have drastic impacts to school ratings across Texas. The A-F system was designed to make it easier for the public to understand how schools are truly performing. But increasing the cut score for an A for CCMR by almost

47 percent in a single year will create the misconception that high performing schools are drastically declining, even if their CCMR performance actually improved. In the midst of a teacher shortage, the last thing school districts need is another false narrative that drives a wedge between schools and the families they serve.”

The Seguin ISD and the Schertz-Cibolo- Universal City ISD are the only two districts in Guadalupe County to be part of this list of districts who again are asking that the legislature intervene and ensure that the elected representatives of the people evaluate the accountability system holistically to improve how district’s measure success and communicate school performance to their families. The methodology for America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care award is unique in that it combines Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results with primary research about women’s healthcare

preferences. The award recognizes excellence in emergency care based on several processes of care measures focused on time patients spent in the emergency department, including:

• Percent of Emergency Patients

Who Left Without Being Seen

Criteria for selecting Guadalupe Regional Medical Center as one of America’s Best also included the percentage of patients who came to the emergency department with stroke symptoms who received brain scan results within 45 minutes of arrival. Also included this year were hospitals that performed well in responding to patients showing symptoms of severe sepsis, a very dangerous condition. The awarded hospitals represent those with emergency departments with average measure times in the highest 25th to 50th percentile in the country. Additional

points were provided for the various trauma center levels.

The award is especially significant given that long waits and high crowding can negatively impact patient outcomes, including patients leaving without receiving medical treatment, longer overall length of hospital stay and an increase in mortality rates.

“Guadalupe Regional Medical Center not only performed well clinically with regard to emergency care measures, but they also have a high recommendation rating, which is very important to women when it comes to health-related decisions,” said Passi.

GRMC is one of 417 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for emergency care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

Seguin and Navarro Softball Teams Win While Marion Falls Tuesday

(Seguin) — The Seguin Lady Matador softball team got off to a 1-0 start in district with an 8-2 win over Pieper at home on Tuesday night.

Lady Mat lead-off hitter Ashlie Aguilar went 3 for 3 with a walk and three runs scored. Camryn Rios was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Kendall Hurt picked up the win in the circle.

Seguin is 15-5-1 overall on the season. The Lady Matadors will be at Smithson Valley on Friday.

(Geronimo) -- Samantha Mundine drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to give the Navarro Lady Panthers a 3-2 victory over Canyon Lake on Tuesday night at Navarro High School.

Kaislynn Tovar blasted a home run in the 1st inning for Navarro. The Lady Panthers are 9-7 on the season and will play in the San Marcos softball tournament starting tomorrow.

(Marion ) -- The Marion softball team fell 15-3 at home on Tuesday to Wimberley. After the Lady Bulldogs spotted Wimberley seven runs in the top of the first, Carlie Alvarado

drove in two runs with a two-out base hit in the bottom of the inning. Alvarado went 2 for 4 in the game with a run scored.

Following the game, Marion head coach Sammy Scribner talked about Alvarado’s effort.

“She came through in the clutch. She’s been kinda struggling at the plate and she’s been injured. She came out today and really did well.”

Scribner also compared his team’s marathon victory at Wimberley last year to their loss this season.

“The score was 35-26. It was 21-21 after seven (innings). So, seven runs that’s a big lead (for Wimberley), but I knew we were gonna score some, I just didn’t know we were gonna stop scoring.”

The Lady Bulldogs will next play on Friday when they host Karnes City.

Silvester Mendez, age 73 of Seguin, passed away on March 2, 2023. Silvester was born on November 26, 1949 in Pearsall, Texas to Beatrice (Rodriguez) and Epifanio Cavazos Mendez.

Silvester is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Joe Alex Mendez.

In later years,she married District Elder George Floyd Ball and served as Pastor’s wife until his demise. She was an avid Civil Rights worker and played as one of it’s musicians having just served at MLK Day at Central Park in downtown Seguin in 2023. She served her local community and the church’s as well. She died February 27th at the age of 86. Services entrusted to the reverent care of Eunice and Lee Mortuary.

White House Releases Plan To Shore Up Medicare Funding

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is proposing a plan to shore up funding for Medicare. The plan includes raising taxes on those earning more than 400-thousand a year and allowing Medicare to negotiate prices for a wider range of drugs. The Biden administration says the proposal would extend Medicare’s solvency by 25 years or more. The measure will be included in the President’s budget proposal set to be released Thursday. Medicare covers about 65 million senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Nexletol Could Be Effective Alternative To Statins

(Undated) -- There could be an alternative to statins when it comes to lowering cholesterol. Statins are effective, but some people are susceptible to side effects, like pain and weakness. A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that bempedoic acid can be effective in lowering cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Doctors have been hesitant to prescribe bempedoic acid, sold under the name Nexletol, because they haven’t seen enough data about its effectiveness. This study, funded by the makers of Nexletol, looks to provide that data.

Doctors Offer Tips To Adjust To Daylight Saving Time

(Undated) - Sleep doctors have tips for springing forward to daylight saving time this weekend. They suggest going to bed 15 minutes earlier and waking up a half hour earlier a few days before the clocks go ahead.. That way you’ll be more rested and not feel the loss of an hour’s sleep as much. They also suggest shifting activities to an earlier schedule, including dinner and exercise to help the body adjust.

Keto-Like Diet May Increase “Bad” Cholesterol

(Undated) -- A new study suggests a low-carb, high-fat “keto-like” diet may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting.. Researchers looked at over 300 participants following a daily diet of 25-percent or less of carbohydrates and 45-percent or more of fats. Compared to the health records of 12-hunded people who ate a more balanced diet, the participants on the keto-like diet had increased levels of LDL, or “bad cholesterol” and a higher risk of heart disease.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
