IS COMING! THE CIRCUS IS COMING!

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is inviting local kids to set, bump and spike during its inaugural youth volleyball league for both boys and girls.

Following a successful inaugural basketball season for youth this past winter, the park’s department is ready to offer the Saturday morning youth co-ed volleyball league for kids in the second through fifth grades.

Registration underway for new youth co-ed volleyball league THE CIRCUS

Erica Taft, the assistant director for the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, says not only is the park’s office launching a new youth league, but it is doing so following the renovation of the current sand courts located at the Seguin Volleyball Complex near the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.

“The volleyball poles have been there for quite some time and our grounds and maintenance team are amazing and talented

and hardworking and they have repaired the poles several times. It was just time to get some new poles so with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, we were able to purchase some new poles that are real nice. With the old poles, you needed at least two guys and a ladder to rehook and retension and this system, you can just use a wrench and change the height easily with one person. It’s really exciting. They are made of steel. League, pg. 3

Splash AWAY!

(Seguin) -- The weather might be a bit cool, but it isn’t stopping families from enjoying the start of the splash pad season at Seguin’s Park West.

That’s according to Erica Taft, the assistant director for the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department.

Taft says the city is excited to welcome families back to the splash pad this Spring Break week.

"It's been running great. Our guys have been testing it. Our team works really hard all year round to make that splash pad. It's a very sensitive piece of equipment.

Their heart is with the community and they work really really hard to make sure it goes as well as it can. They come out on weekends. They come out all the time just to make sure it's running. I'm excited. During the last of the summer, it stayed open the whole time and we had a lot of mechanical issues in the past and I'm very excited about this coming year," said Taft.

The splash is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Splash Pad officially opens each year in March and runs through the end of October.

Seguin welcomes international circus to town

(Seguin) – Spring Break week in Seguin just got more “Spectacular” with the arrival of the circus. The Carden International Circus proudly announces The Spectacular Circus tonight and Thursday at the Seguin Events Complex Rodeo Arena. Leading the three-ring circus will be Ringmaster “Lucky” Malatsi.

Malatsi says families won’t be disappointed with all the thrills and fun being brought to Seguin these next two nights.

"We have all kinds of excitement. We have animals. We have international performers. You name it. We have it. We are Carden International Circus with an emphasis on International because we have performers from all over the world. We are talking about South Africa, Brazil, Mongolia, and Mexico -- all over the world. It's a one-of-a-kind special show with a special message that we have. So, we want the whole entire family to come out and check it out. As you said, it's Spring Break!" said Malatsi.

For over 60 years, the Carden family has brought together talents found all over the world. These acrobats, aerialists, dare-devils, and clowns are described as real-life masters of gravity, purveyors of jaw-dropping stunts, and maestros of airborne artistry.

The ringmaster also says doors will open one hour before show time for the preshow festivities including performer meet and greets, animal rides, interactive fun and much much more.

"We tell people to come in an hour before the show so they can enjoy all the fun rides, activities, face painting, the kids can ride the elephants, the ponies, the camels -- you name it, we've got it, "said Malatsi.

Tickets are $10 for children 12 and under and $25 for adults. Malatsi also adds that for a limited time only, adults can pay just $9.99 while supplies last.

"Get your tickets early. Get them right now

League, continued.

We take good care of our equipment and parks, and we will take good care of these to make sure they last as long as possible,” said Taft.

Taft says the year-round adult program is already a success thanks to both the park’s maintenance and its operation under the Seguin Volleyball

Association.

because we have been selling out everywhere we go so make sure you grab a ticket. You make sure you come in early and come out and have a good time," said Malatsi.

Showtime for the Carden Circus is 6:30-8:30 pm. Online tickets can be found at www.spectacularcircus.com

“Usually every year, there are about 1,700 and 2,000 participants that play volleyball and I’m excited to see what our new court will inspire,” said Taft.

Registration for the youth league runs through the end of this week. Taft says the league gets underway on March 25 and runs through May 6.

Taft is encouraging as many

kids as possible to sign-up. She says with the sport being new for local kids, she is hoping that families give it a chance.

“If your child is on the fence, I’d encourage them to try it. It’s lots of fun,” said Taft.

The cost is $55 a child.

Registration is available at seguintexas.gov/sports. The parks office can be reached by calling 830-401-2480.

California Braces For More LIfe-Threatening floods

(Pajaro, CA) -- Californians are dealing with severe flooding as another atmospheric river brings more heavy rain to already hard-hit areas. Dozens of water rescues have taken place following a major weekend levee breach along the Pajaro [[ Pa-haro ]] River. About ten-thousand residents were urged to evacuate following the breach, which happened early Saturday morning. California has been slammed by a series of severe storms and heavy rain with no let up expected until Wednesday.

Study: Men With Localized Prostate Cancer Can Wait On Treatment

(London, UK) -- A British study shows that men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer can safely wait before undergoing radiation or surgery. Researchers involved say that’s good news because prostate tumor removal often causes incontinence and sexual problems. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, tracked more than 26-hundred men between the ages of 50 and 69 over a period of fifteen years. At that point, cancer had spread in nine-percent of patients being actively monitored without treatment compared to about five-percent in both the surgery and radiation groups. Six out ten low-risk prostate cancer patients in the U.S. choose active surveillance rather than treatment.

Lawmakers Call For Travel Advisory Warning Americans About Mexico’s Counterfeit Pills

(Washington, DC) -- Two Democratic Congressmen are calling on the State Department to issue a travel advisory warning Americans about Mexico’s counterfeit pills. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and David Trone of Maryland are pointing to an investigation by the Los Angeles Times into Mexican pharmacies. It shows that more than 70-percent of pills sold to the newspaper’s investigators were contaminated by fentanyl, methamphetamine or other powerful drugs. Experts say life-threatening drugs have become a major issue with hundreds of thousands of Americans crossing the border each year to buy medication that costs much more in the U.S.

Oldest Woman Dies

(Pretoria, SF) -- The oldest woman in South Africa is dead at 128-years-old. Johanna Mazibuko died on March 3rd, but before her death, she was believed to be the oldest person living in the world. She was set to turn 129 in just under two months, but passed away from a stroke. Last year, Mazibuko said a combination of fresh milk and wild spinach helped her reach her old age. She was born in 1894.
