Community mourns loss of co-founder of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin

(Seguin) -- Not only did she enrich the culture of Seguin, but Vickie De La Rosa made the city’s colors more vibrant thanks to her vision to preserve MexicanAmerican traditions for the last 40 years. Friends, family, and the Seguin community will begin to gather today to say goodbye to De La Rosa who died unexpectedly on Thursday.

De La Rosa will be best remembered as a co-founder of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, a non-profit cultural arts organization. The mission of the organization is “to promote a better understanding of the Mexican-American culture through the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the arts.”

Members of Teatro’s board of directors describe De La Rosa as a pillar in the community fostering the cultural arts center which extends beyond tradition. They say the center also serves as both

an educational and humanities institution.

Board members state, “For all 40 plus years, Vickie volunteered her services and expertise to Teatro in the following capacities: first costume coordinator, first Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa instructor, first program coordinator, first grant writer/administrator, first executive director, and dedicated 41 years to serving all who sought knowledge in learning more about the Mexican American culture through all forms of art and humanities. She brought many artists, many programs, many cultural experiences to the community of Seguin and beyond, this also includes private and public schools, and universities. She cultivated the love of teaching in youth who now serve and served in many capacities within Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin throughout the United States and abroad.”

Library organization in need of HELP identifying folks in Leon Studio photos

(Seguin) -- You are invited to thumb through some old photographs and help identify the who, what, where and how.

Leon and Nelda Kubala operated Leon Studio for 50 years, photographing family portraits, city and county events, and local sites.

The Seguin Public Library owns a portion of the Leon Studio collection, and the Friends of the Library need the community’s help in identifying people, places, and events.

During the program, attendees will have the opportunity to view a selection of photos and help in documenting Seguin history by identifying individuals, events, locations, and providing context and anecdotes for the images. Join us and be part of documenting Seguin’s History through the Leon Studio images.

The program will be held in the Seguin Public Library’s Community Meeting Room at 2:30 p.m. Thursday,

Residents encouraged to turn in old prescription drugs to sheriff’s office

(Seguin) -- Here's an early and friendly reminder to begin cleaning out those medicine cabinets. This Saturday, the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office will again be teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to host the annual National Take Back Initiative.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office will once again be the venue for the one-day opportunity for persons to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

The event will be held on

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the two-story sheriff's office entrance located at 2617 N. Guadalupe Street.

A deputy will be on hand to take the substances to be disposed of with no questions asked. All solid pharmaceutical products in consumer containers will be accepted. Officials say they cannot accept liquids or syringes/needles. Only pills and patches will be accepted.

Citizens can contact their doctor or pharmacist as to where syringes/needles can be disposed of, or where DIY sharps containers can be disposed of.

In addition to Teatro, De La Rosa will also be remembered as a retired educator and administrator. According to Teatro, De La Rosa served in the Seguin ISD for 37 years. She holds multiple degrees in science, math, physics, and computer science. She also held teaching certifications in secondary mathematics and physics plus mid-management administrator and superintendent.

The impact that De La Rosa made in the community always came full circle with those she touched throughout the years. An example of that is Tiffany Rangel, the co-artistic director for Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa, one of the many programs under the Teatro umbrella. At the age of 4, Rangel says she fell in love with the art of folklorico dancing. She not only continued the Mexican dancing traditions throughout her life but today finds herself instilling that same love that De La Rosa had for the program into her own students through her current role with Teatro.

Rangel says De La Rosa was among those who inspired her over the years –even following her footsteps in many ways.

“I don’t remember my life without Mrs. De La Rosa in it. She’s always been a huge, huge mentor to me not only as somebody who was involved in Teatro and spreading the Mexican American culture but as a mother, as a friend and most recently as an educator within Seguin ISD as a math teacher. So, it definitely has been really hard personally. In so many ways, now in her absence, I feel as an educator being a math teacher which she was and

she was also a professor at TLU teaching math and so just in many ways, I feel like dedicating my life to continuing what she started and what she embodied in me beginning when I was four-years-old. So, definitely a huge loss,” said Rangel.

Rangel says although the programs have great leadership, De La Rosa was always seen rolling up her sleeves and being present to support not only the students but their families.

“She was a collaborator in everything she did. She empowered us all. She empowered the children within the program and a huge part of that was absolutely making herself present whether it was coming to the studio during meetings or coming to the studio during practices, being at performances. She always let us know that we were being supported by being a part of the process,” said Rangel.

What might have been even more important –and something that she didn’t realize then was De La Rosa’s imprint on ensuring the future of the program.

“I think now we kind of transition to that ‘now, what do we do?’ She taught us so much and she gave us the latitude to kind of make our recitals and teach the kids on our own and so now this is kind of what she’s prepared us for -- is to just continue her legacy,” said Rangel.

De La Rosa leaves behind her husband Homer and three adult daughters Christine De La Rosa; Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa and Veronica Ramirez. Visitation begins today at Tres Hewell Mortuary. The funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Asher Bonnell Named SCAC Hitter of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran’s Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/ Stony Point) was selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Baseball Player of the Week the conference announced on Monday. The award covers TLU’s final two games against Schreiner as well as their series against Austin College, to earn his first SCAC weekly award of his career.

In five games, Bonnell hit .412 (7-for-17) with nine RBIs, four runs scored, and three stolen bases to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-0 week. Bonnell recorded an RBI in each contest and had four multi-RBI efforts in the Bulldogs five contests. His strongest effort of the week came in the Austin College series finale as the senior outfielder went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Bonnell also was the hero of the Bulldogs 11-inning effort against the Schreiner Mountaineers - driving in the tying run in the ninth and the winning run in the 11th.

Bonnell is the second Bulldog to earn SCAC Hitter of the Week honors the fourth Bulldog to earn a SCAC weekly honor this season.

Victoria “Vickie” Betancourt De La Rosa, age 75 of Seguin, went on to be with our Heavenly Father on April 13, 2023. Vickie was born on December 19, 1947, in Crystal City, Texas, to Victoria (Perez) and Jose Betancourt-Chavez. She moved to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, at the age of 3 until the age of 15. She traversed two countries in language, customs, traditions, and education and never skipped a beat.

Vickie is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Victoria P. Betancourt, and father, José Betancourt-Chavez.

Vickie De La Rosa was a pillar in the Seguin community and beyond. She leaves a legacy of Faith, Hope, Love, Commitment, Service, and a lifetime of memories for those on earth to cherish, follow, and emulate.

She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 54 years, Homer De La Rosa, her adoring daughters: Christine De La Rosa (Dante Mandala), Dr. Yvonne M. De La Rosa (Sulema J. Silva), Veronica Ann Ramirez (Adam) and her loving Grandchildren: Abraham Jaime Silva, Abram Nathanael Ramirez, Sofia Josephine Ramirez, Isaac Matthias Ramirez, and Joana Victoria Ramirez. Her beloved siblings include Maria Guadalupe Betancourt and José Betancourt. Her very supportive extended family: Tia Consuelo Betancourt, Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo, Juan Luis Martinez (Donna), Yolanda M. Guerra (Alejandro), from Wisconsin - Dora Acosta (Israel), Cristela Mantz (Ron) Xavier Perales, Peter Perales, desde Mexico - Humberto Betancourt (Alejandra), Laura Betancourt (Manuel Gonzalez Duran), Luis Francisco Gonzalez (Mercedes), and Mario Gonzalez (Marita) along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Vickie met the love of her life Homer when they were children while visiting her Grandparents, Dora and Teodulo Perez, in Crystal City, Texas. They grew up together, and when she came to Crystal City High School, they started a beautiful friendship that turned into a relationship. They graduated in 1966, and both attended Southwest Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, and then moved on to Southwest Texas State University, where she graduated in 1970. They had a storybook romance that blossomed and bloomed over the 54 years of marriage.

They raised three daughters, who all made them extremely proud. Christine, Yvonne, and Veronica will pick up the torch bravely and boldly that burned bright for 75 years to ensure the legacy continues. Vickie’s legacy began many generations before she walked her earthly journey. Her ancestors made sure to pour into her all she needed to be a humble Servant of God, a true servant leader, the best wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, colleague, and friend. She knew she was put on this earth to make a difference not only in the lives of her family but as well as the lives of everyone in the Seguin and surrounding communities. She always had an “I CAN” attitude, always a smile on her face, and a very infectious laugh. She did not shy away from doing the heart work, whether it was with Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin (40+ years), Seguin Independent School District (37 years), Texas Lutheran College/University (10+ years), or any other affiliation she had within the community and around the State of Texas. She loved being an educator, whether it was in the arts, in the classroom, at Even Start, as an assistant principal, at SISD Central Office, or on a stage where she could share her love of the Mexican American culture.

Vickie was a loving and adoring Grandma and made sure to fill her grandchildren with all the secrets of love, kindness, humbleness, and

the most important thing banding together as a family. She was there to pick them up from school, go to all their extracurricular activities, make delicious rice and carne picada, fresh tortillas, and even tutored all her grandchildren in mathematics and physics. She shared a special bond with each grandchild and had some of the very best conversations on a oneto-one basis. She imparted into them to keep God in everything they do and to always reach their highest potential.

Vickie was instrumental in the formation of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, a non-profit cultural arts organization that is a revered cultural, educational, and humanities institution in Seguin, Texas. Teatro recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of serving Seguin and surrounding communities’ youth, adolescents, adults, and seniors through its three pillars of Community Based, Center Based, and School-Based programming. She touched the lives of thousands. For all 40+ years, Vickie volunteered her services and expertise to Teatro in the following capacities: costume coordinator, Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa instructor, program coordinator, grant writer/administrator, executive director, and dedicated 41 years to serving all who sought knowledge in learning more about the Mexican American culture through all forms of art and humanities. She was instrumental in bringing artists, many programs, and many cultural experiences to the community of Seguin and beyond; this also includes private and public schools and universities. She cultivated the love of teaching in youth who now serve and served in many capacities within Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin throughout the United States and abroad. She was also very instrumental in starting the “Grow Your Own” project within Teatro, which has developed fierce Mexican American arts administrators. She served on many Boards of Directors for various organizations and was often asked by Texas Commission on the Arts to serve as Advisory Review Panelist. She was revered in the arts community throughout Texas and nationally and remained dedicated to the mission of Teatro: To promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture through the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the arts.

Visitation for Vickie will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Visitation will resume at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. A procession will depart Tres Hewell Mortuary on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. for the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Yvonne M. De La Rosa, Alejandro Luis Guerra, Joseph Gorordo, Dante Mandala, Juan Luis Martinez, Abram N. Ramirez, Adam R. Ramirez, and Abraham J. Silva. Honorary pallbearers will be David De La Rosa, Robert De La Rosa, José Alberto Rincón, and Isaac M. Ramirez.

Following the mass, the celebration of Vickie’s life will continue with a reception at the Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St., Seguin, Texas. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Manuel Alzalde passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023 at the age of 67. He was born to Roman Alzalde and Rosa De La Cruz on December 22, 1955 in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Manuel is preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother Cosme Alzalde. He is survived by his children, Victor Alzalde, Rafael Alzalde, Laura Patricia Alzalde, and Armando Alzalde; grandchildren, Valerie, Anastasia, and Victor Alzalde Jr. He is further survived by his brother and sisters, Guadalupe Alzalde, Josefa Acuña, Maria Alzalde, Anita Alzalde Gaitan, Herminia Zatarain, and Margarita A. Rodriguez.

Manuel will always be remembered as a hardworking man. He loved going fishing in his free time, and he enjoyed barbecuing for his family. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Goetz Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the Holy Rosary will be recited at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Santo Tomas Cemetery.

Hansen Lehnhoff was welcomed into the loving arms of her savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday April 14, 2023. Her life spanned 91 years beginning on March 4, 1932. She was raised in Galveston and graduated from Ball High School. She moved to Seguin to attend Texas Lutheran College where she met her husband of 54 years, Henry. Together they raised four children. She was a substitute teacher for 17 years and then owned a flower shop for 14 years. She then worked in the office of Cross Church for 19 years until her retirement at age 86. She loved singing in the church choir and was very active in all aspects of church life. She was a volunteer of the Guadalupe Valley Hospital Auxiliary for 50 years.

She is survived by her four children Kaaren Stoeltje and husband Don, Erik Lehnhoff and wife Janis, Paul Lehnhoff and wife Jackie, and Laura Lehnhoff. She is also survived by granddaughters Angie Saldana, Jessica Lehnhoff, and Kristin Collison and husband Drew, great grandchildren Kailey and Kyle Saldana, her sister Martha Ann Cressman and many nieces, nephews and special cousins.

Carline was preceded in death by her husband Henry, parents Carl and Martha Hansen and brother Neils “Jerry” Hansen and brother-in-law Luther Cressman.

A memorial service to celebrate Carline’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, with the Rev. Jim Price officiating, at Cross Church 814 N. Bauer, Seguin, Texas with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. A private graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service at 10:00 am at San Geronimo Cemetery. Gilbert Soto Briseño passed away on April 12, 2023. He was born on October 29, 1935, in Seguin, Texas to Domingo and Maria Soto Briseño.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Julia Hernandez, Guadalupe Cerda, infant sister Elida and little brother Domingo Jr.

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elisa Luna Briseño; son, Eduardo Briseño (Harriet), daughters Sylvia Marmolejo (Albert), Irma Luna (Valentin), Monica Briseño, Esther Campos (Rene G.), Becky Briseño and bonus daughter/niece Eva Sands; grandchildren Nicholas Briseño, Rachel Briseño, Daniel Briseño, Alfred Briseño, Melissa Avalos, Mike Marmolejo, Vanessa Roberts, Cassi Mogford, Matthew Zamora, Ricky Campos, and Jacob Ramirez. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren and siblings, Gloria De La Cruz (Toribio), Diana Casillas (Hunberto) and Sherry Behrendt (John).

Gilbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He had a passion for helping others, always putting their needs before his own. He lived a life filled with love, laughter and adventure and loved the outdoors. He devoted his life to making a positive impact in the community. He retired from Hexcel after 42 years and volunteered at the Christian Cupboard for 18 years. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He volunteered for everything that was asked of him including teaching CCD, ushering, and helping take care of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery grounds. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, acceptance, and service.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the entire staff of the Guadalupe Regional Hospice Care Team; Dr. Nolan, Donna, Jimisu, Cathy “Cat”, Linda, Lyta, Magali, Angelica, Sara, and family friend Sandra Hernandez for their exceptional care and support. Their dedication and commitment will never be forgotten.

World’s 1st Human Death From Rare Bird Flu

(Beijing)  --  The World Health Organization says a Chinese woman has become the first person to die from a type of bird flu that’s rare in humans. The Organization said the strain does not appear to spread between people. The 56-year-old woman was the third person known to have been infected with the H3N8 strain of bird flu, after two other cases were reported in China last year.  The W.H.O. said in a statement late Tuesday that the woman had a number of underlying conditions and a history of exposure to live poultry.

DOJ Announces Indictments In Fentanyl Operation

(Washington, DC)  --  The Justice Department is taking sweeping action to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.  Attorney General Merrick Garland today announced charges against the leadership of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel and dozens of other defendants.  The defendants include three sons of the Sinaloa cartel’s former leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently in federal prison in the U.S.  Four individuals in China and one in Guatemala have also been indicted.  Garland said several of those defendants are in the custody of international partners and the U.S. is seeking extradition.

DC Getting $15M From Juul In Settlement Over Youth Marketing

(Washington, DC)  --  D.C. is getting its share in a 462-million dollar settlement over the teen vaping surge.  Electronic cigarettemaker Juul will pay the District 15-million to settle lawsuits about the way it marketed to kids.  Attorney General Brian Schwalb shared the update yesterday, claiming the company tried to cover up “how addictive and dangerous its products were.”  He says the money will be used to ease the public health damages caused by Juul.

COVID Dashboard Ending Next Month

(Helena, MT)  --  Montana is doing away with weekly updates on COVID-19.  The state Department of Health and Human Services announced yesterday plans to end the COVID-19 dashboard with the final update coming on May 5th.  The information that showed cases and vaccination number updates will no longer be available online in July.  The department noted the reason behind the change has to do with the federal Public Health Emergency ending on May 11th.  But, officials did say they will continue “routine surveillance” on cases and outbreaks.
