Families in Seguin are invited to grab their tickets for this weekend’s theater production of The SpongeBob Musical. Bringing the sea to the stage is the San AntonioNew Braunfels branch of Christian Youth Theater (CYT).

Four shows are scheduled throughout the weekend at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium.

Bobby Tschoepe, the show’s artistic director at New Braunfels says the SpongeBob Musical has all the fun energy of the TV show while also taking an intelligent dive into important messages.

“What is so funny is that a lot of people expect to come see the show, expecting either like a theme park production or the silly goofiness of the TV show and it’s absolutely a

blast. It is so much fun but the show is way more intelligent than people would expect. There are some really beautiful messages about friendship, about not knowing what your place is and finding your place -- the value of family and of friendship and the music in the show is just phenomenal. Each musical number is written by a different popular music artist. There are songs written by Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum -- there is music by Panic! at the Disco; Aerosmith -- that are all written specifically for SpongeBob but you get so many genres of music in the production. That makes it really special and really unique,” said Tschoepe.

Tschoepe says what makes the production even more special is the talent that will be showcased this weekend by the CYT students.

Seguin Parks Department to host first free movie this Friday

(Seguin) -- Grab some popcorn because this Friday night is movie night. The city of Seguin is preparing to launch its first Summer Movies in the Park event.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says after plenty of planning, the city is excited to bring free movies to local families.

“We are so excited to offer this very very fun event. It’s going to be for families and kids of all ages and it’s being brought to us by the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department,” said Sourdellia.

Sourdellia says the new summer movie series kicks off this Friday, June 16.

"We are starting the movie at dusk which is at 8:45 p.m. We are going to be doing this at Max Starcke Park East over on the Wave Pool side of the park so it’s going to be near the large, covered pavilion. This is totally free.

All you have to do is bring your lawn chairs, blankets, your snacks and come and enjoy this free movie at our new outdoor movie screen,” said Sourdellia.

Speaking of the screen, Sourdellia says it wouldn't have been possible without a generous donation from Seguin's HEB.

“It is a huge screen, so we are going to be able to screen these movies and it’s going to be a lot of fun. We have more Movies in the Park that are going to be coming up this summer also so please save the dates for those. We are going to be having one on Friday, Jul 21 and also Friday, Aug. 25," said Sourdellia.

To find out the names of the movies, families are asked to visit the city's website or Facebook page. No concessions will be sold at the event so families are, again, encouraged to bring their own to the event.

“We are an afterschool theater arts program for students ages 4 to 18. We work with families in the New Braunfels, Seguin, San Antonio, Bulverde area. Our home studio is actually in New Braunfels, but we do shows obviously in Seguin at the Jackson Auditorium. We do shows in our home studio, and we also use the Brauntex Theater in downtown New Braunfels. Our mission is to develop character and creativity through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting Jesus and so, our goal is to help kids shine and to show the talent that they have been given and doing that through a theatrical outlet,” said Tschoepe.

In this production, Tschoepe says the stakes will be even higher for SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and all of Bikini Bottom as they face the total annihilation of their undersea world.

Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, production leaders says a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage and shows how the power of optimism can really save the world!

“If you are coming expecting just to see a school production or a children’s production, man, you are going to be surprised because these young men and women are blowing it out of the water. Our level of production at CYT is really high but we also want to value the students first so the production you see is not coming at the cost of an individual acknowledging who they are. You are going to have so much fun as you come see the show. I think you are going to be truly blown away at the amount of technology we use in the show. The CYT show is a whole family experience. There’s something for parents. There’s something for students and I truly believe that by the end of the show, you will be up out of your seats cheering and singing along to the Sponge Bob

theme song. It’s something you don’t want to miss,” said Tschoepe.

Tschoepe says in addition to a great show, the hope is to give families an introduction to CYT, the largest after-school theater arts training program in the nation.

“We have 58 students ages 8 to 18 in the production. They have rehearsing for the last nine weeks and putting the whole show together and it’s truly a treat. We will be back at the Jackson this summer with adults and students for our Christian Community theater production of Beauty and the Beast so we will be back in Seguin soon,” said Tschoepe.

Show times are 7 p.m. Friday; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

General Manager Dana Brown announced on Wednesday that McCullers underwent surgery on his right forearm and is out for the rest of the year. Brown said McCullers initially injured his forearm during the 2021 playoffs and aggravated the injury in February. McCullers is expected to return to the mound in 2024.

(Houston, TX) -- The Astros cruised to a win in their series opener against Washington. Houston defeated the Nationals 6-1 at Minute Maid Park. Starting pitcher Hunter Brown earned the win after striking out four through seven scoreless frames. Mauricio Dubon, Martin Maldonado, Chas McCormick and Kyle Tucker each homered in the win. Houston has won two of three to improve to 38-and-29. They will send left-hander Framber Valdez to the hill against Washington tonight.

(Arlington, TX) -- The Rangers fell to the Angels for the second straight day. Texas lost to Los Angeles 7-3 at Globe Life Field. Nathaniel Lowe and Corey Seager homered in the losing effort. Owen White was charged his first loss after allowing three earned runs through two

innings of relief. The Rangers have lost five of their last six games to slip to 41-and-25. They will send left-hander Andrew Heaney to the mound for the start against LA tonight.

Cowboys Continue OTAs, Texans Begin Mandatory Minicamp

(Undated) -- The Cowboys are continuing their final week of Organized Team Activities. Dallas began its final week of offseason practices yesterday and will wrap up OTAs tomorrow. Dak Prescott has said he believes that CeeDee Lamb “can be the best receiver in the league.” Lamb totaled a career-high 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns last season. In Houston, the Texans are wrapping up their mandatory minicamp today. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans has said that the team will have an open quarterback competition between rookie firstround pick C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills going into training camp next month.

Rhonda Lee Schmidt, age 76, of Seguin, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on June 2, 2023. Rhonda was born in Reading, PA on June 23, 1946, to Paula (Wieding) and George Mays.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Hunter Mays.

Survivors include her three sons, Eric Schmidt (Cheryl), William Schmidt (Amanda) and Timothy Schmidt (Laura); a brother Keith Mays; grandchildren, Hayden, Emily, Parker, Mason and Hattie Anders; greatgrandchildren, Eilora, Devin, and Raylen; numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family members.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek Church. She was a teacher for many years and enjoyed reading and sewing.

Visitation will begin on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek Church in Seguin with the Rev. Toby Burk officiating. Interment will immediately follow.

Groff

Allen Groff, age 67 of Seguin, passed away on June 8, 2023. Allen was born in Canton, Illinois on December 11, 1955, to Ruby Mae (Richardson) and Jay Dee Groff.

Allen is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 7 years Alicia Groff; children, Michael Groff, Brittany Daniel, Dillon Daniel (Kayla), Shelby Joseph, Katie Landato, Jennifer Walker, Jessie Groff, and Jake Groff; sisters, Roberta Horton (John), Evelyn West (Clay); nieces, Kristin West-Herrera and Cassidie Luther; 8 grandchildren; numerous cousins and many friends.

Allen was a truck driver for over 40 years and logged over 5 million miles. He had a heart of gold and put others before himself. Allen worked hard and long hours but never forgot his family. He was a loving and supportive husband and father who was happiest while spending time with his family. He also enjoyed riding his Indian motorcycle. Allen will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service celebrating Allen’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Tom Jones officiating.

Frank O. Riggs, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Retired, aged 79 passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 in Harpersville, Alabama. Frank was deployed to Vietnam for 2 tours. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious and Army Commendation Service medal. After retiring from the Army, Frank and his family lived on their ranch in Seguin, Texas raising cattle and hay. After selling the ranch, Frank and Sharon moved to Harpersville, Alabama.

Frank was a member of the Seguin Sunrise Lions, American Legion Post 245, and Vietnam Pilots Association. Frank enjoyed flying his airplane and driving his collection of sports and antique cars.

Frank is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sharon I. Riggs, sons Christopher (BettyJo), Randall (Theresa Freeman), six grandsons and one great-grandson.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Frank and Virginia Riggs and sister Jan Kosub.

Colvin Valentine, age 66 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2023. Mary Anne was born on November 1, 1956 in Kenedy, Texas to Mary Louise (Knell) and James Thomas Colvin, Sr. Preceding Mary Anne in death were her parents, her brother, Billy Colvin, and her nephews, Josh Colvin and Trevor Colvin.

Survivors include her brothers, Jim T. Colvin, Jr., M.D. and wife, Pam, and Dennis Colvin and wife, Vicki; nieces and nephews, Dr. Chris Colvin and wife, Julie, Clint Colvin and, wife, Jennifer, Corrie Colvin Williams and husband, James, Cathie Colvin Crain and husband, Andrew, Aaron Colvin and wife, Faith, and Zac Colvin and wife, Nicole; numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other loving family members.

Mary Anne was the youngest of four children. As a child, her father was elected Mayor of Kenedy, Texas, which gave her many photo-ops. She was a twirler in high school and a drum major her senior year. Mary Anne was smart, artistic, kind, and loved her animals. She was a 1975 graduate of Kenedy High School. She was a member of the Cluter National Thespian Society, National Honor Society, and Valedictorian of her senior class. She enjoyed art and took lessons while in Kenedy. That artistic drive continued until her health declined. She enjoyed caring for animalsbirds, dogs, and especially cats. Mary Anne attended Texas Lutheran University for one year and graduated from A&M in 1979 with a degree in Accounting obtaining her CPA. She worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Frost Bank in their cattle division and also Brown and Root Company in Houston, Texas. As her health declined, she moved to Seguin to be closer to her family.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday, July 3, 2023, at 10 A.M. at San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin. Followed by a reception at First Methodist Church in Hierholzer Hall in Seguin.

Report: Army Lost 127 Soldiers To Fentanyl In Seven Year Span

(Washington, D.C.) -- New figures show the toll fentanyl has taken on the U.S. Army. The Washington Post reports data it obtained shows 127 soldiers were lost to fentanyl between 2015 and 2022. That’s more than the number killed in combat in Afghanistan during that same span. Lawmakers introduced a bill last month that calls on the Pentagon to release overdose data every year. Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton of Massachusetts called the overdoses seen across the entire military “an institutional failure and a threat to our national defense.”

Study: Obesity Causes Irreversible Brain Changes

(Boston, MA) -- A new study says obesity could cause damage to the brain that’s irreversible. Published in the journal Nature Metabolism, the study’s authors say their goal was to look at the gut-brain connection. Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Caroline Apovian said “the brains of people with obesity continued to lack the chemical responses that tell the body, ‘OK, you ate enough,’” with no signs of reversibility. Another Cambridge professor not involved in the research called the study “rigorous” and “comprehensive.”

More Americans Are Against Trans Athletes Playing On Teams Matching Identity

(Washington, DC) -- More people say they’re against transgender athletes playing on teams that match their gender identity. A new Gallup poll finds 69-percent of Americans think they should only be able to play on teams that match their sex at birth, seven points up from 2021. Meanwhile, 26-percent say transgender athletes should be able to play on the team that lines up with their identity, eight points down from 2021. The poll results say it seems that American respondents “view transgender sports participation more through a lens of competitive fairness than transgender civil rights.”
