2015–16 SEASON
welcome Dear Friends of Shenandoah Conservatory, Welcome! With more than 150 music, theatre and dance performances annually, Conservatory Performs offers the region’s most expansive arts programming and exceptional quality artistry. Our 2015–16 season features a diverse lineup of performances by both our own award-winning faculty and students, and internationally acclaimed guest artists. Our selected guest artists are consummate storytellers and boundary-pushing catalysts of change. This year, the guest artist series features Grammy Award-winning musicians Edgar Meyer, Christian McBride and new music pioneers eighth blackbird; as well as artists and perspectives from around the world, including Haitian-American visionaries Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) and Marc Bamuthi Joseph; South Korean pianist Joyce Yang; French pianist Pascal Rogé; and the peerless Calefax Reed Quintet from The Netherlands. We also present a witty and boisterous work by the critically hailed National Theatre of Scotland, which takes audiences into one of downtown Winchester’s historic taverns for an immersive and unprecedented theatrical experience. This year, Shenandoah Conservatory is also pleased to welcome new faculty into our community. The exceptional Lithuanian pianist and chamber musician Ieva Jokubaviciute joins us after establishing a powerful presence nationally and internationally as a musician’s musician. Esteemed composer Jonathan Newman joins our faculty as Director of Composition and New Music Coordinator, replacing David T. Little who with an overabundance of national and international commissions has moved to part time faculty as Distinguished Guest Composer and Senior Lecturer. Audiences will have a number of opportunities to hear Newman’s compositions throughout the season, and to experience Jokubaviciute’s extraordinary talents on the keyboard during our World of the Piano series. Finally, this being the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, we are thrilled to present Reflections on Shakespeare, a multidisciplinary series featuring works written and inspired by the great bard. You will find Shakespeare’s legacy celebrated and made manifest throughout our season. 2
In Act III of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the young prince directs a troupe of actors, instructing them on the true and enduring purpose of their craft. He tells them they must “hold, as ’twere, the mirror up to nature.” Of course it’s not just honesty and skillfulness that Shakespeare’s prince is demanding; it is the courage to go beyond technical mastery and pursue the truths of life with its manifold mysteries and ironies. Four hundred years after Shakespeare’s death, Conservatory Performs carries on this legacy and invites you to experience music, theatre and dance that holds up a mirror to nature and provides a window into human experience; that refreshes the mind, confronts the ordinary, and intensifies truth forgotten. Yes, you will even find here a play to ease the anguish of a torturing hour. On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you soon! Dr. Michael Stepniak Dean and Professor of Music Shenandoah Conservatory

Lang’s the little match girl passion was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2008. According to The New Yorker, “With his winning of the Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion (one of the most original and moving scores of recent years), Lang, once a postminimalist enfant terrible, has solidified his standing as an American master.” We will also announce the winner of the third annual William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition. OPERA UP CLOSE
SLOW DUSK BY CARLISLE FLOYD THE IMPRESARIO BY W.A. MOZART FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6 AT 8PM SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7 AT 8PM SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 AT 2:30PM SHINGLETON DANCE SPACE
Set in an intimate black box studio and directed each year by a different distinguished guest artist, Opera Up Close features small ensembles, but big ideas. Slow Dusk is a 1949 opera by American composer Carlisle Floyd. In this tale of family and love set against the harsh backdrop of the poor, rural south, Sadie and Micah dream about a life together despite the fact that their families belong to different religious sects. In stark contrast, Mozart’s The Impresario, is a comic opera, in which an aging diva and a perky young upstart compete for top billing. Sung in English. Music direction by Karen Keating General Admission: $12 // Subscribers: $8

ALBERT HERRING BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN SATURDAY, APRIL 23 AT 7PM SUNDAY, APRIL 24 AT 2:30PM OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE
Set on Shenandoah Conservatory’s main proscenium stage and directed each year by a different distinguished guest artist, Main Stage Opera provides audiences with the full opera experience! This year’s performance of Albert Herring is the beloved Benjamin Britten comedy, in which the leaders of a small town gather to select the most virtuous young girl to be crowned Queen of the May Festival. Much to their dismay, it is discovered that no girl is without blemish. The solution? Choose a May King! Albert Herring, the local grocer’s mildmannered son, seems to be the best candidate to reign over this year’s proceedings. Sung in English with English supertitles. Music direction by Jan Wagner General Admission: $20 // Subscribers: $16

LATE SEATING POLICY
Group reservations and discounts can be secured for parties of 10 or more. Reservations may be modified up until 30 days prior to the date of the scheduled performance. Call or visit the Box Office for more details.
Out of respect to the audience and artists, patrons that arrive late to a performance will be asked by an usher to wait until an appropriate break in the performance to take their seats. Some performances may not have a break in which a “no late seating” policy will be in effect.
Parents are the best judges of what is most appropriate for their children. However, due to the length of performances, we recommend that children attending an event be at least six years old. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket.
Shenandoah Conservatory strives to promptly begin performances at the scheduled time. We recommend arriving approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance to allow ample time to park, claim tickets and find seats.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Shenandoah Conservatory performances and special events will only be canceled for inclement weather in extreme cases. Please note that Shenandoah Conservatory performances do not always follow the same closing procedures as Shenandoah University. Inclement weather announcements are communicated via ConservatoryPerforms.org, e-blasts, Facebook and Twitter. TICKET EXCHANGES/REFUNDS
Exchanges may be made up to 24 hours before the date of the performance. Tickets must be exchanged for performances within the same show in the appropriate calendar year and are based on availability. Subscribers may exchange at no cost, and single ticket holders may exchange at a rate of $2.50/ticket. Flex subscribers who exchange for performances at a higher rate are responsible for the difference in price. Tickets may only be exchanged by returning the original ticket(s) to the box office in person or by mail. All sales are final; no refunds. ACCESSIBILITY
All facilities are wheelchair accessible. Infrared hearing system headsets are available in the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre only. Please contact the Box Office to arrange for wheelchair accessible seating.
CHILDREN
Out of respect to our audience members, we encourage parents with young children to sit where they can easily exit the theatre or concert hall in case the child becomes disruptive. Ushers are available at the venue to assist with seating and any other needs. PARKING
Parking is always FREE for Shenandoah Conservatory performances. Parking lots are adjacent to each venue. STAY CONNECTED
