WINCHESTER, VA CONSERVATORYPERFORMS.ORG
welcome Dear Friends of Shenandoah Conservatory, As Virginia’s oldest conservatory, we have educated aspiring performing artists and teachers and presented world-class artists for more than 140 years. In an era where there is much entertainment, but only little that truly offers insight and inspiration, we are proud to present a dynamic and diverse performance season that engages audiences throughout the region.
Professor of Theatre; and Jacob Brent as Assistant Professor of Jazz Dance. We are also pleased to welcome the exceptional choral conductor and musician Scott Allen Jarrett as our new Choral Artist-in-Residence. I hope you get to meet our new faculty, and witness their extraordinary work on our stages, throughout the year!
This year, beyond offering expansive and exceptional quality arts programming—the conservatory presents more than 150 performances annually—we have added more opportunities for audiences to engage directly with our artists.
On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, thank you for your support of the performing arts, of great performances, and of the artists of tomorrow.
Our 2016/17 season features performances by our own award-winning faculty and students, as well as internationally acclaimed guest artists. Our selected guest artists come from a range of art forms, influences and life experiences. They are seasoned masters; young innovators; boundary-pushing, genre-bending artists —from the extraordinary talents of classical giants, such as pianist Richard Goode and Gidon Kremer’s internationally acclaimed chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica; to torch carriers of great American art forms, such as gifted jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant; modern dance icon Doug Varone; and two artists who have elevated their musical instrument to an entirely new art form—banjo duo Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn. This season, we also welcome young emerging masters from throughout the world, including a highly anticipated North American premiere by The Havana Cuba All-Stars and appearances by Hungarian virtuoso violinist Kristóf Baráti, French pianist Nathalia Milstein, and one of America’s most sought after young pianists Orion Weiss. Over the past several years, Shenandoah Conservatory has continued to develop into a world-class institution, and this year, we continue on this trajectory by welcoming extraordinary new talent to our faculty, including Kevin Covert, as Director of Musical Theatre and Assistant Professor of Theatre; Rick Edinger, as the new Music Director and Assistant
We look forward to seeing you soon! Dr. Michael Stepniak Dean and Professor of Music Shenandoah Conservatory

CÉCILE MCLORIN SALVANT
2016–17 SEASON
“She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace,” proclaimed jazz great Wynton Marsalis. Stephen Holden of The New York Times announced, “Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all... If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three—Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald—it is this 23-yearold virtuoso.” Salvant has since released three critically acclaimed albums, and like her live performances, the recordings blend the authenticity of jazz, blues and folk with the theatricality of vaudeville. Today, Salvant’s unique interpretation of American music traditions—which manage to be simultaneously nostalgic and progressive—have garnered her worldwide adoration and acclaim, including the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

In 1997, Austria’s legendary Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival was witness to a small revolution when the award-winning violinist Gidon Kremer presented a brand new orchestra: Kremerata Baltica. Comprised of 23 young players from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, the orchestra conquered the discerning audience, injecting new blood into the festival with its exuberance, energy and joy in playing.
In the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset with limitations, but when the musicians are the award-winning Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck the possibilities are limitless and the results are magical.
Twenty years later, this talented group of musicians has developed into one of the best international chamber orchestras of its time, and has cemented its international reputation in major concert halls around the world. As part of a special twentieth anniversary tour, the orchestra takes up residency at Shenandoah Conservatory, providing the campus and community an opportunity to learn from and witness their extraordinary talent. The residency will include open rehearsals and masterclasses, meet-the-artist receptions, and a culminating performance featuring highlights from their most recent and critically acclaimed albums, Chiaroscuro and New Seasons.
Fifteen-time Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work with the Flecktones, but his virtuosic skills have led to a staggeringly broad array of collaborations throughout the musical world—from jazz duos with Chick Corea and a concerto composition for the Nashville Symphony, to an in-depth exploration of the banjo’s African roots documented in the 2009 film Throw Down Your Heart. bigail Washburn, an innovator in her own right, A is a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter. She has drawn critical acclaim for her solo work and collaborations with the all-female American old-time music group Uncle Earl, as well as her folk-music diplomacy efforts in China. Her earthy sophistication blends seamlessly with Fleck’s virtuosic ingenuity, creating a musical partnership like no other.
DOUG VARONE & DANCERS SATURDAY, MARCH 4 AT 8PM OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE $25
Since its founding in 1986, Doug Varone and Dancers has commanded attention for its expansive vision, versatility, and technical prowess. On the concert stage, in opera, theatre and on the screen, Varone’s kinetically thrilling dances make essential connections and mine the complexity of the human spirit. From the smallest gesture to full-throttle bursts of movement, Doug Varone and Dancers, “command attention as soon as the curtain goes up” (Chicago Tribune). As part of a special thirtieth anniversary tour, the company presents a dynamic evening of works spanning their impressive history—from earlier works, such as Home and Possession, which established Varone as a modern master, to a newly commissioned cycle of imagistic dances entitled Paradox of Prayer.

OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE** $20
Book and lyrics by Steven Sater Music by Duncan Sheik Directed by Kevin Covert Music direction by Rick Edinger Winner of multiple Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, Spring Awakening is a musical adaptation of the seminal play about the realities of young love, sexual exploration, growth and loss. With rock music written and composed by Duncan Sheik, the play reveals the angst and frustration of teenage life. Spring Awakening contains mature language, themes and sexual content that some audiences may find disturbing or offensive. For questions or concerns, please contact the Box Office.
Presented back-to-back in one program, The Typists and The Root of Chaos reflect two distinct styles of twentieth century theatre. Schigal’s mid-century The Typists, is a bittersweet piece that follows the life cycle of two office workers through their everyday conversations about life, love and human existence. The Root of Chaos is a bizarre, acerbic black comedy, that uses absurdist theatricality to underscore its bitingly funny comments on the fate of a small-town family that has fallen victim to modern man’s mindless plundering of the earth’s riches.
BLUE STOCKINGS NOVEMBER 11–13 OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE** $20
Written by Jessica Swale Directed by J.J. Ruscella It’s 1896 and the young women of Girton College, Britain’s first college to admit women, are preparing for battle. After sacrificing their reputation in society and studying ferociously to match the grades of their male peers, the women are told they will not be able to graduate. Branded as “blue stockings” (a derogative term for an educated woman considered “unmarriageable”), the women wage a yearlong fight for education and self-determination. Set against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage, Blue Stockings is a moving, sometimes humorous, story that resonates with today’s ongoing fight for equality in the classroom and beyond.

Book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser Directed by Carolyn Coulson Music direction by Rick Edinger Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics and won a bevy of awards, including Tony Awards, Drama Desks and Oliviers. Set in the mythical New York underworld, the oddball romantic comedy follows two small-time gamblers as they pursue love and luck—from the heart of Times Square and the cafes of Havana, Cuba, to the sewers of New York City.
Book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens Music by Stephen Flaherty Winner of the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, Once on This Island is a play-within-a-play set on a mystical island in the Caribbean. Vibrant costumes and dance blend with Calyspo-style AfroCaribbean sounds to tell the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, and then falls in love with, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Although shunned and rejected by the boy’s family and friends, Ti Moune’s capacity to love ultimately unites the two worlds in the most unimaginable way. his performance is part of Theatre Up Close, an intimate T series that utilizes minimal production elements in order to highlight the textual and conceptual elements of a play through engaging acting and directing technique.

Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major, op. 61 “For those who like to hear the violin played at its sweet and acrobatic best, then Baráti is out of the top drawer… With intensity of sound, unbridled athleticism and, when needed, searing leaps into the stratosphere that send a tingle down the spine.” – Gramophone Magazine

Out of respect to the audience and artists, patrons that arrive late to a performance will be asked by an usher to wait until an appropriate break in the performance to take their seats. Out of respect to our audience members, we encourage parents with young children to sit where they can easily exit the theatre or concert hall in case the child becomes disruptive. Ushers are available at the venue to assist with seating and any other needs. PARKING
