A MESSAGE FROM MADAM REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Greetings, Sorors!

What an amazing time we had together at the 70th South Atlantic Regional Conference, the first regional conference under the T.U.N.E. administration! I was so excited to see more than 7,000 of you in my hometown of Orlando, enthusiastically embracing the programs and events, ready to soar to greater heights of service and sisterhood.

I want to thank the many, many sorors who helped make the 70th SARC a great success, starting with the Palmetto Pearls from Cluster VII in South Carolina. Hosting a destination conference 500 miles away from home is no easy task, but you understood the assignment, accepted it graciously, and executed it superbly!

Attendees can expect a 360 photo booth, Chicago-style stepping, a replica of the Celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop, the South Atlantic Way, and many more surprises.

Kick Off with Denny's

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated , South Atlantic Region, partnered with Denny’s to provide free meals to the local community to combat food insecurity, a project that kicked off the sorority’s 70th South Atlantic Regional Conference.

Denny’s 53-foot Mobile Relief Diner, which has served more than 98,000 meals since 2017, prepared free, freshly cooked breakfast for the community from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday, April 26, at the Dr James R Smith Center, 1723 Bruton Boulevard, in Orlando The community was invited to dine together or pick up breakfast meals to go

As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, "I am thrilled that Denny’s could be a part of this community initiative,” said April Kelly-Drummond, Denny’s Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “Denny’s has always been focused on feeding people’s bodies, minds, and souls, and this project aligns perfectly with our deep-seated commitment to the communities we call home”

The event aligned with the sorority’s “Empower Our Families” initiative under the Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood international program led by AKA International President & CEO Danette Anthony Reed.

Denny’s presented the South Atlantic Region with a check for $10,000 to support scholarships and programs.

LETTER WRITING AND BOOK DRIVE

During the 70th Regional Conference, sorors participated in the "Black Book Brigade" service project by donating books by black authors to be shared with Florida children through churches and other private organizations –a response to efforts in Florida to remove books about the African American experience from school classrooms and libraries. The value of the books donated is estimated at $8,000.

Additionally, sorors wrote letters to Florida legislators regarding proposed legislation that threatened to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at post-secondary institutions. Thank you to the Region Program Committee, led by Soror Sherell Crawford, for leading this effort.

South Atlantic Region celebrated the more than $18,000 raised for EAF during the 70th South Atlantic Regional Conference, thanks in part to participation in the EAF raffle.

The region AKA EAF Committee presented three undergraduates with endowment scholarships during the conference!

Ivy Circle is the South Atlantic Region's take on an Affinity Group or Rewards Club. For a designated donation over and above annual sorority dues, members are afforded access to additional perks and privileges not available to non-Ivy Circle members.

Annual Membership Fees help sponsor South Atlantic Region undergraduates' attendance at international and regional leadership training events and provide financial support and access to other Alpha Kappa Alpha learning experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.

Delta Kappa Omega Chapter Celebrates

Diamond Anniversary

Delta Kappa Omega Chapter (Tallahassee, FL) celebrated 75 years of service and sisterhood with a celebratory year of service and a culminating gala. The chapter donated more than 75 books to a local school and feminine products for middle school-age girls and also hosted its Diamond Anniversary Gala at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL Special guests included South Atlantic Regional Director Soror Tiffany Moore Russell, Cluster IV Coordinator Laurise Thomas, Florida A&M University President and First Lady Larry and Sharon Robinson, respectively, and elected officials

The Diamond Anniversary Gala was the talk of the town with chapter president LeRosa Brown and members sharing the accomplishments of the chapter. The chapter’s history includes, but is not limited to, a reading and math tutorial program that has provided free services and educational programs for over 40 years; the establishment of a foundation that operates a community service center; health fairs; voter registration drives; and veteran appreciation initiatives.

Delta Omicron Omega Revives the Rock Lake Community Garden

The Delta Omicron Omega Chapter (Orlando FL), in conjunction with Green Works Orlando, has taken the initiative to revive the Rock Lake Community Garden. Led by Soror Angela Nealy, chairman of the Enhance Our Environment Committee, the community garden project serves as a focal point for the neighborhood by promoting healthy eating, encouraging physical activity, and providing a safe space for people to build community by connecting with neighbors. Located in the heart of Orlando, the garden provides fresh fruits and vegetables for families who may not have access to healthy food options. The revival of this garden is a testament to the commitment of The Enhance Our Environment Initiative and Green Works Orlando team. By working together, they have revived a garden that is now home to a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as herbs and flowers.

Nu Iota Omega Chapter Advocates for Social Justice

Nu Iota Omega Chapter (Maitland, FL) Connection and Social Action Committee hosted a community discussion on March 23 titled “Unite and Protect: Being Black in Florida.” More than 100 people attended the non-partisan dialogue which was facilitated by a distinguished panel of scholars, clergy members, nonprofit leaders, and elected officials who discussed issues facing Black Floridians: voting rights, comprehensive classroom instruction of African American history and culture, criminal justice reform, DEI, civil rights, and more. Soror Kelli Murray, chairman of the chapter's Connection and Social Action committee, underscored the significance of the sorority's advocacy.

"Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has always been at the forefront of social justice to promote fairness and equity We stood in the gap to educate and empower our community to act in the best interests of Black Floridians Knowledge, unity, togetherness, and action must prevail We were proud to host this community discussion," Murray said.

Nu Omega Omega Celebrates Visionary Women

On March 25, Nu Omega Omega Chapter held its inaugural Visionary Women Awards Celebration in honor of Women's History Month. The celebration recognized women who have made significant contributions to the Madison community through leadership, service, inspiration, and mentorship. The Honorable Allison Tant of the Florida House of Representatives (District 9) served as the keynote speaker of this historical event, where eight women were honored for their generous work throughout the community Among those honored were Lucile Day, VeEtta Hagan, Jacqueline Johnson, Lou Miller, Sharon Postell, and Kisha Tolar In addition, the chapter awarded two high school students: Cheyenne Crooks and ZarReyon McDaniel. The high school students were recognized for their school and community leadership. The chapter also bestowed the special Deloris Jones Community Impact Award in honor of the charter member's decades-long supreme service to the community.

Preserving Endangered Lands: A Service Project by Pi Delta Omega

For “We Are One” AKA Service Day, Pi Delta Omega Chapter (Miami, FL) partnered with the University of Miami's Iota Nu Chapter, the South Miami-Dade Branch of the NAACP, Miami-Dade County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program, and other organizations for a cleanup activity. Participating groups were educated about the uniqueness and importance of Miami-Dade County's subtropical ecosystems and native communities and joined a workday to help protect and restore environmentally sensitive areas The volunteer workday occurred on January 16 at the Tropical Pineland Preserve

Upsilon Alpha Omega offers YLI Cultural Exposures

On February 11, Upsilon Alpha Omega (Lawrenceville, Ga ) YLI students explored module 2 The theme was “B-Discovering Countries and Their Cultures - Cultural Exposures” Students dressed as their personal cultural icons: Rosa Parks, Malcom X, Angela Davis, and Josephine Baker just to name a few. Students also arrived dressed in traditional African garments. They enjoyed food tastings from African to Caribbean culture. They curated and listened to international playlists as they learned about African American art exploration, led by YLI youth Zoe. Soror Charity Johnson, a member of Upsilon Alpha Omega, led students through an explosion of cultural dance moves from around the world. The choreography was to Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up”. Pi Alpha Omega P.E.A.R.L. University Series: Interviewing 101

On February 4, Uplift Our Local Community partnered with the Student Life and Student Government Association of Atlanta Metropolitan State College to present the P E A R L (Providing Employment and Resource Leadership) University Series: Interviewing 101

This event was opened to the community and students at Atlanta Metropolitan State College The series included an interactive day of workshops and activities geared towards preparing attendees for job interviews. Attendees were offered workshops on interviewing skills with HR professionals and mental health awareness. Professional headshots and a Dress for Success pop-up shop filled with business attire were also provided for all attendees.

Phi Pi Omega Chapter, Empower Our Families Program Launches Childhood Hunger

Initiative Power Pack

In November 2022, Phi Pi Omega Chapter (Newnan, Ga.), Empower Our Families Program Initiative launched the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack by preparing 60 meal packs that were provided to Robert J. Burch Elementary School and Liberty Point Elementary School. Participating students were selected by school counselors based on the family's need or housing status. Phi Pi Omega Chapter received donations from the Publix Foundation and the Fayette and Coweta County communities to support the AKA Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack. Since starting in November, Phi Pi Omega Chapter has delivered more than 800 power packs to local schools in the community. All packaging from food items are recycled in collaboration with Enhance Our Environment Program Initiative.

Xi Beta Omega Provides Tornado Disaster Relief

Xi Beta Omega Chapter, (Griffin, Ga.), sponsored disaster relief events to assist the community after tornadoes devastated the area. A drive was held where nonperishable items, laundry detergent and personal hygiene products were gathered. Items were then distributed at the Eighth Street Baptist Church. Also, volunteers from surrounding chapters in Cluster V, Mount Zion, Achaia, and Rising Star Baptist Churches; Griffin Lodge #317, Black Voters Matter, the Urban Outreach Association, and Core worked in coordination in this event. In addition, the chapter partnered with a food truck, Lettum Eat, to provide hot meals to tornado victims at the Fairmont Community Center. To ensure the community received the necessary resources, sorors gathered at Atkinson Elementary School to host the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Small Business Administration (SBA). These agencies provided information and assistance while the chapter shared care essentials, a meal bag and gift cards to all who attended.

Tau Epsilon Omega Hosts Mental Health Informational and Zumba Class

Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter, (East Point, Ga ), hosted an in-person event focused on the targeted program Mental Health Awareness entitiled “Shaping Up Our Mental Health from The Inside Out!” Chapter Basileus Soror Suzette LaSane welcomed 78 Sorors and guests to the informational and Zumba class. The informational focused on managing stress and anxiety to promote better mental health. The event included mental health professionals providing takeaways (handouts on stress management, stress balls, suicide prevention education, community resources, gun locks, and literature on children and mental health). Soror Kaszia Scott conducted the 30-minute Zumba session to get the endorphins pumping, promoting healthy cortisol levels Ten guests participating in a Q&A on mental health awareness received a signed copy of Soror Raushannah Johnson-Verwayne’s self-care book

Sigma Alpha Omega Chapter (Tifton, Ga.) made it a Day On and not a Day Off for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2023. The chapter sponsored I.V.Y. (Inspiring Virtuous Youth) Group participants at the MLK Day breakfast and donated baskets to the Tifton Fire Department, the Tifton Police Department, the Tift County Sheriff Department, and the Tifton-Tift County Humane Society. Sigma Alpha Omega also shipped a package to Operation Gratitude for the area's deployed military troops. Sigma Alpha Omega Chapter is serving significantly in our community!

The YLI™ Youth Leaders of the Zeta Xi Omega Chapter (Augusta, Ga.) are SOARing into their leadership potential through growth mindset, goal setting, and career exploration. They are learning the importance of community service and enhancing our environment In March, the Youth Leaders participated in a Career Adventure Challenge The youth leaders completed an “All About Me Resume”, shared their future aspirations and highlighted their interests, skills, and talents Sorority members and community partners shared their professions with the youth leaders through a career-fair styled station rotation The youth leaders were exposed to a range of careers in STEM, the environment, public service, and entrepreneurship. They had hands-on experiences with a conservationist, a medical doctor, and an occupational therapist. They also learned their potential to turn their passion into profit from an entrepreneur. The day was filled with fun, laughter, and learning!

Epsilon Omega Omega Enhances the Environment with Tree Plantings

Epsilon Omega Omega Chapter (Macon, Ga ) partnered with Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful and Macon-Bibb’s Parks & Beautification Department with a tree dedication in Carolyn Crayton Park, the site of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival In celebration of Arbor Day, the chapter donated three Helen Taft cherry blossom trees “This tree planting aligns with our international program’s goal to plant 3,100 trees, and Epsilon Omega Omega is doing our part to impact that number”, says Basileus Soror Tanya Allen. “We look forward to watching these trees bloom over the years!” Soror Asha Ellen, Executive Director of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful, commented that “Trees contribute to our environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. They also beautify our community, creating more scenic views, shade for our children, and more”. Epsilon Chi Omega Chapter Sister Squad First Friday

Epsilon Chi Omega (Florence, SC) kicked off the New Year, continuing the mission of Strengthening our Sisterhood where Soror Squads gathered for our monthly Sister Squad First Friday at the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Place Florence. Each Soror Sister Squad was represented, and sorors learned that each had a special talent and creative mindset. Sorors reminisced on college days, learned and harmonized favorite AKA songs, danced, and reflected on the day they became an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. Mu Iota Omega Chapter Donates to Community Seniors

Mu Iota Omega Chapter (Conway, SC) in collaboration with their Foundation, Horry County Pearls, Inc , supported the senior residents of Oaks of Loris Assisted Living with a donation of 306 towels, hand towels, wash cloths and personal care items. The chapter members and Loris City Mayor Todd Harrelson delivered the items during a presentation that included greetings from the Mayor, a senior staff member, chapter President Dr. Benita Stephens and Vice President Veda Nichols. Additional “We Care” baskets were provided to show appreciation to the staff for their dedication and commitment to the residents of the facility The program recognized our Seniors through our Soaring to Greater Heights in Service and Sisterhood Initiatives, Empowering our Families and Uplifting our Community. Green Awarded Administrator of the Year

Soror Kim Green of Mu Upsilon Omega Chapter (Gainesville, FL) was awarded Region 6 Administrator of the Year by The Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association. Soror Kim serves as an Associate Athletic Director at the University of Florida. This is her third Administrator of the Year honor of the last five gymnastic seasons at the University of Florida.

Adams-Pickett featured in "Birthing Justice" Documentary on PBS Stations Nationwide

Soror Donna Adams-Pickett, MD, PhD, charter member of Alpha Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter in Columbia County, GA has been lending her voice to the national discussion on the current state of Black Maternal Health in the U.S. Soror Adams-Pickett’s advocacy and passion for this topic has recently been featured in the documentary “Birthing Justice”, co-produced by celebrated Olympian Soror Allyson Felix. “Birthing Justice” has been screened at the Congressional Black Caucus, the United Nations, and most recently, aired nationwide on PBS stations throughout the month of April for National Minority Health Month. Recognized and respected nationally as a subject matter expert, Soror Adams-Pickett’s commitment to raising awareness to protect black mothers has also been highlighted on the PBS series “Brief, But Spectacular” during Black History and Women’s History Month as well as featured in The New York Times and The Grio’s digital and visual platforms.

Honoring Our Pearl

When Zeta Xi Omega Pearl member, Soror Helena Thompson, became an Ivy Beyond the Wall in December 2022, the sadness did not stop with her family, chapter, or even her local community Soror Helena touched many lives during her years of service As Graduate Advisor for Zeta Eta, she was a mentor, teacher, rolemodel, sister, mother, and friend to numerous new initiates. Soror Helena lovingly shared lessons with the undergraduates, as she instilled the ideals and purposes of our great sorority Following her death, 22 Sorors from across the country, who were initiated into Zeta Eta between 1971 and 1980 when Soror Helena was Graduate Advisor, came together to honor her memory. In January 2023, a check for $1,100 was presented to Zeta Xi Omega on behalf of Soror Helena to be used for scholarships The scholarship will be awarded to a qualified graduating senior within our local community

Still SOARing at 107 years old

At 107 years old, Soror Janie Ruth Crawford continues to soar through her civic dedication and service to all mankind. Soror Ruth is the oldest member of the Zeta Xi Omega chapter and, possibly, the South Atlantic Region. Since being initiated 40 years ago, Soror Ruth has remained a financially active member despite physical limitations preventing her from attending events. Recently, Soror Ruth exhibited her commitment to helping Georgians strive for excellence by participating in the state’s highly contentious U.S. Senate election. Although bound to a wheelchair, she insisted on being transported to the polling site to cast her vote. A graduate of HBCU Paine College, Soror Janie is no stranger to leadership. She is a longtime educator who created the “Shiloh Community Center” in Augusta, Georgia. Soror Ruth is the epitome of serving and soaring by merit and by culture.

Nelson Receives Inaugural Award

Soror Treda Nelson, Ed.D. , received the inaugural 2022-23 Elementary Principal of the Year Award presented by the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators (SCASBE). She was honored at the Annual Scholarship Gala.

SCABSE supports the philosophy that is espoused by the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), which is to affirm the inherent worth, dignity, and educability of black people. She was also one of the guest panelists during SCASBE’s winter conference for educators. For the past six years, she has been the principal at a kindergarten-eighth grade elementary/middle school. The school has earned success for personalizing learning for students and closing the achievement gap. Soror Nelson is a Mu Phi Omega Chapter member, where she became a sorority member on January 15, 2006. She has served as basileus, anti-basileus, and historian for the chapter.

Williams Receives Top Young Lawyer Award

Lauren Williams received the 2022 ABA On The Rise Top 40 Young Lawyer Award.

Lauren is an Attorney at Accenture. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2015, and her B.A., magna cum laude, from North Carolina A&T State University in 2012.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, South Atlantic Region, invites chapters to submit brief articles for the region’s newsletter, “The Ivy Syndicate.” We welcome:

“Chapter News,” highlighting significant accomplishments and activities that align with our current program initiatives, and Individual accolades for accomplishments from “Sorors who Soar.”

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Articles should be submitted by the chapter's Ivy Leaf Reporter with chapter name, city and state. Please keep all submissions to 150 words or less (not including headings and captions). Include a heading and photo caption, not to exceed five names. Submit only one article per section per issue. There is a one photo limit per article. The content of each article should be timely and to-the-point. Please adhere to our sorority brand guidelines.

PROTOCOL NOTES FOR SUBMITTING ARTICLES

We will use Greek titles in this publication, since it is only sorority-facing.

We will use "soror" (lowercase) when referencing sorors in general. "Soror" will be capitalized before all names.

Never use "Soror Dr." or "Soror Mrs." in the sorority publication, the word "Soror" is a courtesy title, unless referencing someone by elected or appointed title on the first instance.

The word Madam should never include an "e". Include chapter name when including a soror's name.

Use "chairman," never "chair" or "chairwoman"

Submit photos with variety, not always posed shots.
