American Heart Association Heart Walk Have a Heart, Walk to Save One by JoAnne Yanez • Photos courtesy the American Heart Association
E
ach year the American Heart Association organizes Heart Walks in cities all around the country. Sioux Falls is proud to have hosted thousands of participants over the last 15 years. When the Heart Walk was first launched in Sioux Falls, the goal was to just get people motivated to begin on their journey of physical activity and heart health. Last year, over 3,000 people joined in the event and organizers are expecting attendance to grow to at least 4,000 this year. The day has now evolved into a family festival with music, food and activities for everyone. There will be CPR demonstrations, health screenings, inflatables for the kids to bounce away the day and even a place where your pets can play. The entire family is encouraged to get moving and stay for the day’s activities. South Dakota State University graduate and Sioux Falls native Elisabeth Hunstad will entertain us with beautiful vocals and food will be provided by the American Heart Association’s national partner, SUBWAY® and our own local Whisk & Chop Café. According to Addie GrahamKramer of the American Heart Association, each day South Dakota loses six people to heart disease and stroke. “Twenty percent of the cause is genetic, but that leaves 80 percent that we can control,” Graham-Kramer says. Thirty minutes of walking a day is just one way that we can help improve our odds. Events like the
22

Pick 3 and save! Heart Walk are a great way to begin or continue healthier lifestyle changes. Proceeds from the Heart Walk support vital American Heart Association initiatives in advocacy, medical research, public awareness and education. Graham-Kramer also pointed out the important roll survivors have during the day. They will be crowned prince and princess of the walk and children survivors will lead the one-mile path. A threemile path will also be available for those wishing to take a longer route. Participants will get a tribute sticker that they can indicate who they are dedicating their walk to. Many past participants have walked in honor of a loved one, but more and more are walking in honor of themselves. Many people register and walk by themselves or with their family, but businesses throughout Sioux Falls and eastern South Dakota are increasingly organizing teams of 10 to 15 employees for the day. The American Heart Association has seen a rise in corporate participation of 20 percent in the last year. More and more companies are recognizing that improving employee health is good for everyone involved. They see these walks as a part of their role in supporting employee wellness. On behalf of the presenting sponsors, Jon Soderholm, chairman of the event and Avera Heart Hospital President & CEO, says that all are invited to join in the fight against heart disease. SFW

F
or five Girl Scouts, choosing to spearhead a fundraiser that helped to raise awareness for fitness was easy. Not the typical little girls knocking at your door to sell cookies, the Hartford Girl Scout Troop 50202 is comprised of teenagers Amanda Pennock, Brittany Johnson, Hayle Heumiller, Korissa Jorgensen and Samantha Jennings, who are ready to begin high school. The majority of the girls have been in the same troop since first grade. According to co-leader Leah Johnson, “I’ve had the pleasure of watching these girls grow up and become really self-sufficient, assertive and confident young women. Our troop’s goal has always been to be good stewards of our community as well as provide opportunities that the girls may not have otherwise had.” The 5K Fun Run/Walk was a grassroots effort for the troop, which included securing event sponsors, promoting the event, coordinating race packs and helping to check in participants before the race. The girls also participated in the run.

“I am so excited to see another posting on All Sport Central for the girl scout troop doing another run in October. I have heard so many wonderful words about the 5K. Congratulations to the troop on a job well-done.” ~ Jessi Moeller, Owner, Hartford Family Fitness and 5K sponsor
“We were surprised that it attracted people not just from Hartford but from other towns,” Amanda Pennock says. “I had a friend that trained for the 5K with her dad and they ran it together, which was really cool. She placed first in her division, which was also awesome.” Prizes were awarded to top male and female runners in two categories; 19 and under and 20 and over. Mark Smedsrud and Lana Humpal placed first in the 20 and over category, and Paige Hanisch and Cody Wegleitner came in first for the 19 and under division.
The race took place on Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. with more than 60 runners and walkers participating. The 5K route wove through the city streets of Hartford starting and ending at the city park. “When I first heard about the race, I thought it was a lot different than what Girl Scouts normally do,” Caroline Jacobsma, runner and event sponsor says. “I firmly believe in making healthy choices, so the 5K really struck a chord with me. It was well planned and organized, and it was fun. I would absolutely do it again.” Scout parent Kari Jennings notes, “We’re planning on holding another 5K in the fall and again in the spring because we had such awesome feedback. Special thanks go out to our very generous sponsors who helped make this such a great success.” The troop is planning on using the funds to help pay for an educational tour of New York City next summer. Sioux Falls Woman was a proud sponsor of the Get Your Thin On 5K.

Look Up and Hope:
Strengthening Families Affected by Incarceration Breaking the Cycles of Poverty and Incarceration By Jody Gust
A
mid the challenges affecting families touched by incarceration is a nonprofit human service organization upholding a mission to change the future for incarcerated mothers, their children and families while creating stronger communities. Leah Piersol, director of specialized services at Volunteers of America, shares about Look Up and Hope: Strengthening Families Affected by Incarceration. “Look Up and Hope is a national initiative started by Volunteers of America to strengthen families affected by maternal incarceration,” she says. “Volunteers of America saw that mothers were the fastest grow26

ing segment of the prison population and that there were scant evidence-based programs addressing their specific needs.” With four pilot sites selected nationwide, Sioux Falls was chosen as one location. “The sites were selected for a program model, which works with mom while incarcerated and after, her kids and the kids’ care givers,” Piersol says. “Services provided are counseling, case management, which encompasses assistance with finding sustainable employment, education, housing, food and transportation. It’s all about solution finding.”
While striving to empower and preserve families, Volunteers of America provides each effected family with a sort of life coach. “A family coach assists in any way needed to help each member of the family reach their full potential,” Piersol says. “A mentor is also made available to each Look Up and Hope participant through the Second Chance Mentor Program.” Piersol adds that mentoring other women in everyday work and home life comes naturally for women. “We are asking women to reach out and use their natural talents to assist women starting their lives anew in our community,” she
adds. “Two staff members provide mentor and mentee matching, training and on-going support for both the mentor and her mentee.” In addition, Look Up and Hope is a program designed with a strengthbased approach focusing on three generations. “The reality for children is that when fathers are incarcerated usually Mom is still around to provide some continuity of care,” Piersol says. “However when a mother becomes incarcerated, often it is more devastating for the children’s well being, in terms of disruption and often separation from one’s home, school, friends and possibly entering the foster care system. This is often a big transition for everyone. Needing to advocate and navigate the systems is often necessary and assistance in a new role is appreciated and welcome.” Piersol says that a woman, the children and caregivers agree to be part of the Look Up and Hope program. “The family coach, counselor, case manager and mentor are then provided for everyone,” she adds. “The strengths of each are assessed and the needs and priorities are determined. The children are helped based on their care provider’s support and assistance in meeting their basic needs. Continuity and stability translates into healthy children emotionally.” Piersol also says that volunteer mentors are needed for women coming out of prison. “Women need the positive, encouraging support of another woman to lean on, learn from and prosper,” she says. “As we all know from our own lives, having someone who believes in us and whom we can depend on is vital during tough transitions in our lives. Being a mentor provides that window to what can be. Life can be worth the struggle to create lasting change for oneself and the future.” SFW

Why Rush It?
Sioux Falls Couple Say Timing Is Everything By Greta Stewart • Photos by Maurer Photography
T
iming is everything. There is no better way to describe the love story of newlyweds Clint and Lisa Ginsbach. Their story starts almost a decade ago in Madison, SD at Dakota State University, where the two were leading separate lives, but were quickly about to collide. “I was a cheerleader,” Lisa recalls. “I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting in the cafeteria and he walked in with one of his basketball buddies. I turned to my girlfriend at the time and said ‘I’m going to marry that guy.’” Thanks to social networking, the couple reconnected seven years later and after going through the emotional loss of Clint’s father to Lou Gehrig’s disease and the discovery of expecting a baby, they decided to wait to get married. Their daughter, Finley, was born in May 2009. It wasn’t until Christmas Eve of that year when Clint proposed during the blizzard. “Here I was, feeling awful about not being home with my family for Finley’s first Christmas and he made me go out, takes me to Greenberg Jewelers and ends up having the whole day planned out,” Lisa says.

“What guy isn’t nervous?” Clint says. “I knew she would take the ring,” he adds jokingly. “But seriously, I wasn’t sure she would have me.” Lisa recalls how fun it was to plan her ceremony. “Every day there was something that needed to be done”, she says, “It was a lot of fun.” The wedding party, all clad in pink and black, “my absolute favorite colors,” Lisa says, laughing, was made up of seven bridesmaids, seven groomsmen, two ushers and one very special accessory—their 14-monthold daughter. A nd they wouldn’t have had their ceremony at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church any other way. “It was the perfect day,” Lisa says. “Things could’ve gone wrong, but my bridesmaids made sure we didn’t know about it.” The reception, held at the Hilton Garden Inn, was amazing, according to Lisa. “We didn’t have the traditional cake. Instead we did cupcakes,” she adds. “They were pink, of course!” Despite Clint not being much of a dancer, they did end up having a dance. “We had a great experience and even though Clint does not dance, I got him out for the first one, anyway,” she says smiling. When it came to planning the wedding, Lisa says it came easy to her but was a little sad the next day. “I didn’t have to go over the details anymore,” she says. “I honestly woke up the next day feeling a little empty.”

Cliff Avenue • Sioux Falls • 338-9798 Lisa says if she could recommend one thing for future brides, it would be to focus on herself. “Remember, it’s your day!” she says. “Focus on you and your husband. Don’t worry about not mingling with everyone. They’ll understand.” By the end of the night, Lisa says they were supposed to stay at the hotel but just wanted their own bed and their own shower. “We just wanted to be home,” she says. “We literally snuck out and went home. How crazy is that?” Lisa says the best part about her wedding day was knowing she was marrying the perfect guy for her. The feeling was mutual. “I can’t imagine being with anybody else,” Clint says.

Make the beautiful choice They haven’t gone on their honeymoon yet, but are simply waiting for the right time, much like getting married. “The timing worked for us,” Clint says. “If you know you plan on spending the rest of your life with someone, why rush it?” SFW

sfw Three Envious Looks and How to Get Them By Brianna Venekamp It’s no secret many of us take beauty cues from celebrities. Who hasn’t taken a picture of a celebrity with them to the salon and said, “I want my hair to look like hers!” But, it’s not just certain cuts and styles we love, the following are three of the most envious hair qualities – and how to get them! Voluminous Achieving voluminous hair actually begins with the right shampoo and conditioner. Select brands that condition “lightly”- volumizing or clarifying work best. Once you’ve cleaned and conditioned, apply volumizing products. Foam and styling sprays are usually lighter, therefore they are able to apply lift and body while still providing direction and control. For maximum lift, apply these products to your roots. Next, the roots need to be dried completely. Opt for a hair dryer that assists with volume without over-drying. After applying a volumizing spray, blow-dry hair using a round brush, pulling sections of hair upward from the roots and away from your scalp. Finish with a light hair spray.
Agapé Salon Model: Maryann • Stylist: Jackie
Smooth For frizz-free strands, begin by working a small amount of a moisturizing cream through your towel-dried hair to calm unruly strands before blow-drying. Then add an anti-frizz heat protecting serum to the ends only. Make sure you point the dryer nozzle downward, as moving the dryer in all kinds of directions lifts the hair cuticle and causes frizz. Run a straightening iron with smooth ceramic plates over small sections of your hair and finish with an anti-humidity hairspray. Shiny A great place to start to get shiny locks is a vitamin and protein rich shampoo and conditioner. Use a wide toothed shower comb to gently coat each strand. After towel drying, apply a leave-in conditioner to protect against heat damage and blow-dry with the nozzle positioned down. Finish with a blast of cold air and a glossy mist spray. SFW

Jeans All Year Round! The Comfort and Versatility of Denim By Brianna Venekamp
W
e all have our favorite pair of jeans we can’t live without. With all the variety of styles available today, one could argue jeans are the most popular and necessary item in any closet. Add the fact that jeans can be worn year round, and there’s really no contest. Now, it’s just a matter of selecting which of the styles is right for you. A casual type of jean with a higher waist is the most popular. There are several different colors to choose from, but the trendiest is usually dark blue, dark grey or light grey. Washed jeans of a dark-blue color, decorated with embroidery are also popular because they are extremely comfortable. Add a wide or narrow leather belt to accessorize. Another popular type of jean is the low-waist skinny jean. Skinny jeans are usually made of cotton and spandex, and are perfect to wear with a longer top or high boot. Jeans made of genuine leather are also a popular trend. They look very similar to leggings and are the perfect choice for going out. The major color choices are black, grey or darker brown. Bootcut jeans look natural and are great to wear all day long. Whether they’re simple and chic, funky or distressed, jeans are timeless. They are extremely comfortable and durable, and they can be bought on just about any budget. Available at: Karen’s For Her

hen you hear “Feed Your Happy,” the Pomegranate Market slogan, you can’t help but smile. Their food is designed to make you happy, inside and out. It’s like playing hopscotch on the first day of school, or catching-afish-the-first-time-you-cast happy. Pom Bistro is just one section of the greater Market, but it’s the part that will really make you smile. Food is a celebration there. Everything they make for you makes you healthy in mind, body and spirit. The bistro is more than just a place to sit down and dine. It’s a place you can count
on for take-out food for the family, for a quick lunch on the go or a fresh alternative to the boring grocery store lunch specials. Mondays in the bistro might bring a chicken and broccoli, steamed rice and veggie stir fry special. Tu e s d a y s , c u stomer s might find butter nut squash mac and cheese, jalapeno cor nbre ad stuffing and sweet potato hash to feed their happy. Some other recent specials include Tikka masala with saffron rice and curried sweet potato mash. Customers also loved the spinach and mushroom lasagna with penne pasta and sausage.
The food specials are listed on their website weekly. Oh, and their weeks include Saturdays, the day sometimes skipped by restaurants with specials of the week, but also the day most likely to make working people smile the most. There’s a salad bar, take-out sandwiches, some quick, already made dishes ready to heat up for the family, and always a well-trained, friendly staff that knows exactly from where the ingredients in each item came. Bring the neighbor, the carpenter, the kids and even the barber. There’s something at Pom Bistro for everyone. And, it will be made from the freshest, locally grown products they can find. Spend Less, Go Far Fostering Better Fuel Efficiency By Jill Funke
W
hen prices at the gas pump begin to rise, consumers search for ways to stretch their driving dollar. Josh Cochrane, service advisor for Luxury Auto Mall in Sioux Falls says that good gas mileage can start at the bottom of the vehicle. “Tires are very important to fuel efficiency,” he says. “Proper set, season-appropriate tread depth and pressure as recommended by the manufac-
56
SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2011
turer are key elements to consider.” According to Cochrane, an abundance or deficit of pressure can make a big difference in the vehicle’s utilization of fuel. To reduce the pressure fluctuations that result from high and low temperatures, Cochrane advises automobile owners to consider using nitrogen gas instead of air as it is more stable, and therefore less reactive to heat and cold. Wheel alignment is another vehicle
area to consider. “When wheels are not properly aligned, they fight each other instead of working together,” Cochrane explains. In turn, the friction created causes drag and results in less than optimal fuel efficiency. The suspension and chassis can also be examined for misalignment, and other issues like bent wheels or axels, bad shocks and damaged springs also create drag on the engine.
Once the wheels, tires, alignment and suspension have been examined, Cochrane says that the vehicle owner should focus on fluids and oil. “It is essential to change the fluids according to schedule,” he says. “Old and dirty fluids create friction, which leaves the vehicle operating less effectively.” When it comes to oil, Cochrane says synthetic products promote better mileage. Making sure the air filter is clean is also suggested because inhibited or reduced airflow wastes fuel. Regular service and careful attention to the vehicle are important parts of fuel efficiency, which coupled with common sense will help gain the best gas mileage. Simple physics dictates the fact that more weight an engine is pulling, the less efficiently it will operate especially when going uphill. Experts advise drivers to reduce any unnecessary cargo including extra seats, tires or heavy parts. They also recommend accelerating in anticipation of approaching hills instead of in reaction to them when the vehicle is already traveling up the incline. Watching the vehicle’s speed and not exceeding the speed limit is another way that experts say drivers make the most of their fuel efficiency. When the automobile exceeds 40 miles per hour, the wind resistance created at the higher speeds is much harder to overcome. Even though speed limits are set for safety reasons, better fuel efficiency is usually achieved at or below those speeds. Speed is also a consideration when accelerating from a complete stop, as a rapid rate of acceleration causes the vehicle to use more fuel than a slower approach. SFW

“This is our favorite place to be.” ~ Sharon Arshem
For over thirty years, Ed and Sharon Arshem have spent weekends and holidays gazing into the glistening waters of Lake Madison, SD. And while their views haven’t changed, the place where they tuck their children in at night, cook family meals and play games certainly has. Their original modest ranch-style cabin was literally pushed aside; making way for a grand two-story home the Arshem’s proudly call their getaway. “Here’s a picture of our old cabin being moved,” Sharon says as she flips through a photo album that documented the construction project. Whizzing along the winding gravel roads around Lake

Madison, only random signs and local landmarks help guide visitors. Despite the lines of tightly spaced cabins, the grand façade of this two-story Cape Cod style home stands out with its coastal charm and striking architecture. A blend of cobbled stone, classic shakes and traditional colors gives the lakeside views a run for their money. A charming front porch is the perfect place to relax and watch children play in the park across the street. Once inside, a large span of windows utilizes nearly every square inch of the sky-high 25-foot wall, adding an abundance of sunlight and breathtaking views to the living room, kitchen and balcony.

“We just love the great room and how open it is,” Sharon adds. Aside from the great room, Sharon and Ed also wanted their new home to have a bathroom for every bedroom, separate recreational areas and an enhanced kitchen. But before they compiled their list of “must haves,” they needed to put the building project itself on the list first. In 2004, a friend who dabbled in architectural drawings began planning their dream house after touring homes with the couple in Kansas City. After consulting with Bob Visser of Visser Architects, they spent the next year making modifications before JLM Construction officially broke ground. Today, this five-bedroom home is the perfect getaway for the Arshem’s, their two children and spouses and three grandchildren who live in Sioux Falls. Despite the exquisite coastal flare and detailed craftsmanship, this 3,500 square foot home was built for family. The kitchen features a large, two-tiered center island with rich quartz Cambria countertops from Creative Surfaces, pendant lighting and barstools. The whitewashed custom cabinets from Showplace Kitchens add a seaside flare and contrast with the dark stone. Stainless steel appliances from Karl’s TV & Appliance and tile floors complete the space. “When it gets really hot outside, we can still enjoy the lakeside views while sitting in our kitchen,” Sharon adds. The large living room is casual and comfy with a large, tweed sectional and soft, beige carpets from Montgomery’s Furniture. The walls are a neutral taupe and blend with the whitewashed trim. A custom-made cherry entertainment center built by contractors John and Lee Hartmann houses their television set, waterfall and fireplace from Fireplace Professionals. And while their look is casual, coastal and crisp, they add their personal touches with quaint, lake-inspired accents.

“This is an old advertisement for the Lake Madison Chatauqua,” Sharon says, pointing to the framed art on the wall. Ed, a long-time summer resident, quickly jumps in to explain the meaning behind what appears to be headshots of old-time performers and a large structure. “First developed in the late 1800’s, the Chautauqua had the look and feel of a lakeside resort, but was much more,” he sasy. “It was a place where people gathered to hear lecturers, take classes and listen to the various musical entertainers that booked shows there.” Another playbill from the Chautauqua in 1910 also graces the hallway in their laundry room. With convenient access to the back patio area, the laundry room also serves as a place for their grandchildren to clean off after a long day playing on the beach. Creamy tile floors, a sink and an abundance of countertop space are the perfect companions to the full washer and dryer. Family dining is also a priority. When not outdoors enjoying their meals al fresco, the Arshem’s gather around their casual dining area, which also has access to a screened in sunroom and patio door leading to the deck. A wide plank dining room table is the perfect anchor while upholstered parson’s chairs, a simple topiary tablescape and wrought iron chandelier from Mahlander’s Appliance & Lighting adds a touch of elegance. With the sounds of the slapping waters and the aroma of fresh lake air, the screened in sunroom is the perfect bug-free micro-climate. “We get a ton of morning sun in here,” Sharon adds. “This is our favorite place to be.” The carefree tile floors blend effortlessly with the white wicker furniture and crisp colors – all accented with the occasional aqua blue. Seaside accessories are kept to a minimum while the large windows maximize sunlight and sparkling reflections from the lake.

And when they’re ready to enjoy the open air, the large deck is just a step away. Constructed of maintenance-free Trex decking, this elongated deck and patio area is great for catching some rays, grilling out or gathering around the fire pit. With three doors leading to the home, it not only features ample square footage, but allows for convenient traffic flow. The main floor is complete with a half bath and spacious bedroom, which is currently used for Sharon’s mother when she visits. “I framed my mother’s needlepoint to use as wall hangings –

The spacious room features another slider to the sunroom along with ample windows adorned with simple white wood blinds to not distract from the lakeside views. Even though Sharon has been credited for her knack with interior design, she quickly credits Ed for making sure the home is functional and safe. A main floor storm shelter was added in addition to back-up generators and a security system. “These things are more my area,” he laughs. “I make sure we’ll also have power during a storm.”

A wrought iron open staircase and large boat wall hanging lead the way to the upper level loft area. “This is perfect for our grandchildren,” she adds. “We knew we wanted separate spaces for our family to hang out and relax.” Overlooking the main level, this upper view of the lake utilizes the sky-high windows which make for peering far into the horizon a possibility. A pool table, entertainment wall and wet bar act as the hub for the four bedrooms. And while the three little club chairs give each grandchild special seating for watching their television shows, a touch of history gives special meaning for Ed. Made from the windshield of an old Buick, a worn glass sign is painted with the words “Sioux Inn” and hung for decades on his childhood cabin on Lake Madison. “My grandparents bought that cabin in 1915,” he adds. Ed salvaged this piece of childhood history and has it proudly displayed next to a vintage photograph of his family outside the cabin, which featured the sign. Today, this touch of nostalgia is nestled amongst framed family pictures – from both then and now, proving how his life on Lake Madison is ever evolving.

Designed for each family member, each bedroom features a private bath and lake views from the window. And what family-friendly home would be complete without a toy room and nursery? “I don’t know how long we’ll need this crib,” Sharon laughs. “Eventually, we’ll add some beds in here for the grandchildren.” The master bedroom is bright and airy with breathtaking sights and neutral palettes. “We have the best view of the lake from this room,” Ed adds. And while the views are plenty, so is the comfortable décor. The master bathroom features cherry cabinets, neutral tile from Thornton Flooring and a Jacuzzi tub from The Bath Collection. Despite the grand features of the home, Ed and Sharon most enjoy the little things that lakeside living provides. “This is where I spent summers while growing up,” Ed says. Now, they can proudly say it’s where their children grew up and their grandchildren are growing up. “We just love everything about this home,” Sharon adds. Since 1978, the Arshem’s have enjoyed the best of what Lake Madison has to offer, and now, they plan on enjoying even more of this weekend retreat for years to SFW come.

Fitness Nutrition – Maximizing Performance
Eating nutrient-rich foods can enhance days & workouts By Mari Stensgaard
K
risten Perschon, supplement manager at Pomegranate Market in Sioux Falls, would be the first to say that women need more than caffeine to maximize their performance in and outside of the gym. Women need the right fuel to get through their day and workout, and the latte-to-go will never be enough. At Pomegranate Market, Perschon helps women shop. She offers her expertise on health and wellness and also gives women ideas for how to get the nutrients they need before and after a workout. “I’m constantly surprised what women don’t know about healthy living and eating,” Perschon says. “When women learn about nutrition and what to consume pre and post workout, they are quick to change their ways and take more risks with what they eat.” The key to maximizing performance is to get in good proteins and good carbohydrates every day. For protein, prepare lean meats such as chicken breast or a piece of white fish, or eat a handful of nuts. Perschon recommends a green salad tossed with lean meat, a tuna fillet or egg whites. “Foods high in protein are good calories and they’re dense,” she says. “You can eat 100 calories and get nothing, or you can eat 100 calories and get a lot.” Good carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables are another sustainer to get through the day and through a workout. 76
SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2011
“Some women can get up right away in the morning and work out, but most don’t have time until later in the day,” Perschon says. “Start the day with a wonderful slice of whole wheat toast with a little pea-
nut butter or oatmeal and berries.” Berries and fresh fruits are also a smart addition when aiming to maximize performance. Berries are high in nutrients and low in sugars. Fresh fruits, like a banana,
for example, are resistance carbohydrates. A resistance carbohydrate burns more slowly in the body, which is key for sustained energy. Melons, on the other hand, are high in sugars, so the body burns them quickly. This counteracts with what is needed for a solid workout. To gain maximum performance, it is best to eat a good carbohydrate 15 to 20 minutes before exercising. A good carbohydrate will produce energy, purify blood and make it easier to breathe during a workout. After a workout is when good proteins come into play. “What you eat after a workout is what changes you,” Perschon says. “That’s when you have to give your body some protein to lean out and gain muscle. This is also the perfect time for carb lovers.” Failing to eat after a workout wastes energy. By consuming a healthy amount of proteins and carbohydrates, the body will build muscle and also replenish its energy supply. This is the time when the body ultimately takes shape. In addition to healthy eating, Nutrition Consultant Jake Brager at Complete Nutrition in Sioux Falls, SD, says that adding supplements to the mix can further maximize performance and results. He says taking fish oil and other omegas prove to be important because they benefit the brain and heart, but also reduce inflammation and keep the joins lubed for a longer workout. Daily vitamins can also aid in producing more energy. “Once you know the science and start applying it, you’ll find out it’s true,” Perschon says. “People get used to things and it’s hard to change those habits. You just have to trust and try new foods and supplements to see results and to maximize every minute of your workout SFW and day.”

Life Balance
Keeping your life in proper balance is a day-to-day challenge By Donna Farris, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center

hen it’s “out of balance,” your washing machine stops or buzzes until you rearrange the load. If your life is spinning out of balance between work, relationships and activities, there’s no warning buzzer. Yet there are other, more subtle signs that warn you to stop and rebalance. “Most of our time during a given week is devoted to work, so it’s easy to get caught up in work,” Sara Bennetts, outpatient therapist with Avera Behavioral Health Services, says. “So many of us define ourselves by our work. There’s a sense of accomplishment, and a given set of rules and expectations that we don’t have in our personal lives.” Getting out of balance results from working too many hours, not setting proper boundaries, and the inability to say “no,” Stacy Gorman, outpatient therapist with Avera Behavioral Health Services, says.

Warning signs include stress, tension, irritability, headaches, exhaustion and feelings of guilt. Personal relationships with your family, spouse or children
may suffer. Unchecked, this imbalance can lead to behavioral health conditions such as anxiety and depression. It may lead to substance abuse – drinking or taking pills to relax, and needing more and more for the same effect. There are practical steps that anyone can take to rebalance their lives. First, keep an accurate diary of all the ways you spend your time throughout the day. “Are you giving yourself a lunch break? What time are you leaving in the evening? Do you take a day off? Do you read e-mails, text or return phone calls at home?” Bennetts says. “You may think you’re working 40 to 50 hours when you’re actually working 80. Ask yourself, ‘Is this how I imagined living my life and spending my time?’” Build “down time” into your schedule, Bennetts suggests, whether that’s a date night with your spouse, surfing the Internet at non-work related sites, reading a magazine article, watching a favorite TV show or talking with friends.

and Dr. Snyder’s 20 years of experience Get involved in an outside activity like an aerobics class, volunteer opportunity or sports league. Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. “During your work day, take time for yourself, even if it’s only 10 minutes. Go for a walk, close your office door and stretch, or do deep breathing exercises,” Gorman suggests. “Let the drive home be your transition time,” Bennetts says. “In your mind, shut off everything that happened at work, and transition to what’s going on in your personal life. When you’re at work, concentrate on work, and when you’re at home, focus on your family and home life.” While it may feel uncomfortable and make you feel guilty, learn to say “no” to those requests that are not required for your job, and are not high priorities for you personally. You may earn a few more dollars by working overtime or get noticed for a promotion. “But what’s the cost of missing your child’s preschool graduation, or some other important milestone? What’s the cost of losing time with loved ones? There’s no way to put a value on that,” Bennetts says. Ask a friend to keep you accountable. Your workplace may have an employee assistance program, or it may be worth investing in counseling sessions to get things sorted out. “Women often try to do it all, but we can’t do it all,” Gorman says. “Keeping your life in better balance is a day-to-day challenge.” To learn more about behavioral health topics, go to www. Kickoff a Stress-Free School Year Tips for how to make a smooth transition By Audra Staebell, Sylvan Learning Centers
F
or many children, the first day of school doesn’t only mean new teachers and new friends – it can also be a source of anxiety with homework assignments and tests just around the corner. Starting the school year off on the right foot can help minimize a child’s stress level throughout the year. Dr. Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D, senior president for education outreach and marketing director for Sylvan Learning in Sioux Falls, suggests that parents help their children prepare for the return to school by encouraging a structured routine and also staying actively involved in their child’s education. Back-to-School Tips (for each new school year): Get back in the routine. Ease the transition from lazy summer days to the structure of the school year by re-establishing bedtime, mealtime, reading and homework routines. Set education goals. Help your child set goals at the very beginning of the year. Whether it is striving for an A in reading,
80

handing in all homework on time or preparing for tests in advance, setting goals can help set the routine for the new year.
Develop a relationship with your child’s teachers. Take the time to meet your child’s teachers at the beginning of the school year. Teachers can be the best source for information about your child’s scholastic performance. Homework routine and place. Designate a specific time and place for homework and help your child discover a regular, quiet place where he or she can study and be free from distractions. Stay on schedule. Your child should keep a schedule of all classes, assignments and extracurricular activities. Organization minimizes late nights and ultimately student anxiety. Emphasize organization. For some students, having color-coded binders for each subject helps them stay on track throughout the school year. Keeping notes organized helps test preparation later in the year. Encourage learning at home. Promoting learning outside of the classroom helps children perform better in school. To nurture reading skills, spend at least one hour per week reading with your child. To enhance math proficiency, allow your child to help plan the next family trip. Have them compute miles, cost of gas,
expenses for food, hotel and entertainment. Transition Year Tips (Children Starting Kindergarten, First Grade, Middle School or High School): Visit the school. If your child is changing schools with the new year, make a special trip together to visit the school before the first day of classes. Checking out the new classroom and meeting the new teacher before school starts will help ease feelings of anxiety and help get your child into an academic routine. Discuss changes in routine. Talk with your child about how the routine for his or her new school may differ from the previous year. Provide extra support. When starting the new school year, especially if it’s a transition year, a little extra support can’t hurt. Talk with your child about his or her fears regarding school and maintain an open dialogue throughout the year. Transition into kindergarten. Kindergarten is your child’s introduction to elementary school and a first opportunity to learn basic math and reading skills, not to mention a first look at routines and expectations of group learning. As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher. The skills that he or she learns from you – how to get along with others, follow directions and listen to directions – will help him or her start the year off right. Transition into middle school and high school. Transitioning from elementary to middle school and from middle to high school brings many questions and concerns. Organization becomes key in middle and high school when your child must keep track of multiple subjects, homework, teachers and classrooms. Help him or her organize these new items and encourage good study habits with a planner. SFW

American Cancer Society’s Youth Scholarship Program Dreams about higher education become reality for cancer survivors By Mari Stensgaard
C
ollege costs are steep, and so are the costs of cancer treatments. For more than 15 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has awarded scholarships to young cancer survivors and dared them to dream big about higher education in spite of their illness. Each year, the Midwest Division of ACS receives more than 150 scholarship applications. To be eligible, a student must have a history with cancer and be accepted into a two or four year university or technical school. The Youth Scholarship Program Review Committee then selects students who exemplify a commitment to academic or vocational goals, leadership or community service. Charlotte Hofer, manager and director of public relations at ACS, says the Youth Scholarship Program is the Society’s way of investing in the future generation. “These are the students who will go on to become key leaders in advancing research for cancer treatments and cures,” she says. “They will make a difference in communities and ultimately help other cancer patients maintain a better quality of life.” 82
SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2011
Scholarship dollars come from private donors as well as ACS annual events. In 2010, the ACS Midwest Division funded 76 recipients. Each recipient received $1,000. Cassie Jacobsen of Lake Preston, SD was one of the 2010 ACS Youth Scholars. Currently, Jacobsen is pursuing a degree
in pre-med at Dakota State University (DSU). She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 17 and has been cancer free since the summer of 2009. “I was so excited when I received my scholarship,” Jacobsen says. “It has motivated me to be persistent in pursing my future career, and also it has encouraged me to become more deeply involved with our Colleges Against Cancer Program at DSU that helps raise money for ACS. My
goal is to help other people in ways that I’ve been helped.” Hofer says that one of the most rewarding parts of her job is to stay in touch with and watch the ACS Youth Scholars grow. Ty Eschenbaum also from Lake Preston, SD graduated from South Dakota State University in May and received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural business. He, like Jacobsen, benefitted from ACS’s youth scholarship program, and recently accepted a job at the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. “Ty, like so many others, is a fighter,” Hofer says. “He is a leukemia survivor and is determined that cancer is only a side step in life.” Studies have shown that cancer is a side step for more than 10,000 children and teens in the United States each year. Though 10,000 are diagnosed with some type of cancer, 80 percent survive. “In many cases, the fight against cancer leaves families in tough financial situations,” Hofer says. “Recovery usually means nothing is left in savings for college.” ACS believes that the cost of college should not be a barrier for survivors and their families. That is why the mission of the Youth Scholarship Program is to reduce the cost of college for some of the most deserving candidates. “Survivors are amazing people,” Hofer says. “While other kids are concerned about prom and exams, youth cancer survivors are concerned about hospital stays and treatments. When you survive something like cancer, you develop an inner strength and reserve the courage to face just about anything. You learn to celebrate each day, and not to let anything stop you from achieving your dreams.” ACS invites any young cancer survivor planning to attend college to apply for the 2012 ACS Youth Scholarship at www.cancer.org

Varicose Veins? Connect with today’s treatments By Stephanie Jurgens, Sanford Hospital and Health Systems
Y
ou’ve waited all year for those fabulous days of summer when you can wear your favorite shorts. Then you glance down. Blue-tinged ropes of veins bulge from your legs, or maybe just a few unattractive bumps here and there. You’re not alone. Up to 60 percent of American adults suffer from varicose veins. And it’s not just an appearance issue. “Aching, swelling, discoloration, visible varicose veins signify your legs have been exposed to abnormally high venous pressure,” Dr. Patrick Kelly, vascular surgeon at Sanford Vascular Associates in Sioux Falls says. “The time to treat this is now, before you have lifelong complications such as leg ulcers.” With today’s technology, all you need is a lunch hour.
A proven procedure For decades the one treatment for varicose veins was vein stripping—a major surgery involving general anesthesia, considerable discomfort and lengthy recovery. In 1999, minimally invasive treatments entered the picture. Venous closure, for example, uses a radiofrequency catheter to heat the diseased vein from the inside, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Varicose veins diminish and blood reroutes to healthy veins. In recent years, venous closure took a major step forward. A better-designed catheter vastly improved the patient experience with shorter treatment time, speedier recovery and greater comfort.
84
SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2011
Dr. Greg Schultz, vascular surgeon at Sanford Vascular Associates, participated in research that led to the advance. The ease and convenience of the new-generation venous closure prompted nicknames: “microwave on a stick” and “lunch break” surgery. “In experienced hands, venous closure is a safe, effective procedure that really does take just minutes,” Dr. Kelly says. “And yes, many of our patients do return to work the very same day.”
An informed decision Even with a brief treatment, you owe it to yourself to be informed. How do you know it’s right for you?
What’s involved? Who do you trust? “When a patient comes to us with varicose veins, a key step is an ultrasound study to see how the veins are working,” Dr. Kelly says. “Our goal is to treat the underlying cause.” If venous closure is appropriate—and often it is, treatment takes place in the outpatient setting. With ultrasound guidance, the surgeon precisely inserts the catheter into the vein. Numbing medication ensures comfort. Within minutes the patient is up and walking. Full activity resumes the next day. Experience contributes to success. “It’s fair to ask how many venous closures the surgeon has performed. You also want a surgeon who is adept in all aspects of surgery, not just one procedure,” Dr. Kelly says. “Venous closure complications are uncommon, but if you have one, you want a surgeon capable of handling it.” Fellowship trained, Dr. Kelly and Dr. Schultz perform 600 venous closures a year. Their experience in the procedure goes back to 2003.
Impressive results Five years after venous closure, more than 95 percent of patients are free of pain and swelling with minimal recurrence of new varicose veins. And quality of life? “We often hear the comment, ‘Wow, I forgot my legs could feel this good,’” Dr. Kelly says. “The constant dull ache had become that much a part of their lives.”

Allergic Conjunctivitis Air Tight Goggles or Eye Allergy Treatment? By Jody Gust
S
tuffiness and sneezing may be the hallmark symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but your eyes are equally vulnerable on the front line of the battle against allergens and pollens. Second only to the nose when it comes to miserable allergy symptoms, Daniel Todd, M.D. FACS, Midwest, Ear Nose & Throat, notes, “Twenty percent of the U.S. population suffers from allergies, and more than half of them struggle with eye symptoms.” Fully exposed, “The eye is literally sitting out in the breeze when the pollens and other allergens are blowing by,” Dr. Todd says. “Eye allergies mainly involve the conjunctiva, which is the tissue lining that covers the white surface of the eyeball and the inner folds of the eyelids. The conjunctiva is a barrier structure that is exposed to the environment and the many different allergens that are airborne.” Additionally, “Allergic conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva that is caused by a reaction to allergens,” Dr. Todd says. “The inflammation causes enlargement of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva resulting in a 86

red or bloodshot appearance of the eyes.” Grass, tree and weed pollens, pet hair or dander, dust mites or molds, “Allergens that may be present indoors or outdoors can cause eye allergies,” Dr. Todd says.
“Unfortunately it is impossible to avoid most airborne allergens.” ~ Daniel Todd, M.D. FACS, Midwest, Ear Nose & Throat “People who are sensitive to these allergens suffer from seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, the most common type of eye allergy.” Noting that indoor allergens can be an issue for some people throughout the year and can result in perennial allergic conjunctivitis, “Cigarette smoke, perfume and diesel exhaust may inflame your eyes,” he adds. “They can act as irritants that cause non-allergic symptoms, or they can make your allergic response worse.” While eye allergies can be disruptive, annoying and uncomfortable, “They rarely cause any permanent damage,” Dr. Todd says. “However, there are rare conditions that are associated with
Come Enjoy The Fun atopic dermatitis. Other diseases can cause inflammation that may affect the eyesight. In addition, some of the treatments given—if given for the wrong diagnosis, or not in consideration of another underlying diagnosis—may cause harm.” While Dr. Todd’s humorous suggestion of wearing airtight goggles may seem fashionably unattractive, the ideal treatment for all allergic conditions is avoidance. “Unfortunately it is impossible to avoid most airborne allergens,” he says. “Medications are really the main-stay of therapy. As with any medication, topical administration is both safer and more effective when possible. The treatments of choice are topical antihistamine drops such as olopatadine, decongestants and the newer mast-cell stabilizer medications. Topical steroids should be used only if prescribed by a doctor for severe reactions and on a short-term basis because of the potential for side effects. In general, oral antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) are the least effective option, but they are often used for treating allergic rhinitis together with allergic conjunctivitis.” For a long-term reprieve, “Immunotherapy, the regular and repetitive administration of what you are actually allergic to in order to desensitize the patient is the only potential cure for the condition,” Dr. Todd says. “Immunotherapy can be administered either with a subcutaneous shot, or as an under the tongue drop. Over time the patient can become desensitized to the allergens and the symptoms and need for medication diminishes.”

Stress Fractures
Is a Stress Fracture Really a Fracture? By Jody Gust
T
aking an abrupt leap from sedentary to increased physical activity could result in more than a cardiopulmonary workout. What begins as pain or swelling in weight-bearing bones may end up as a frustrating stress fracture. Eric Watson, M.D., Orthopedic Institute, says a stress fracture, at least at first, is not truly a fracture. “It’s right before the bone breaks, and it’s very similar to taking a paper clip and bending it—you get that thin stretched out look right before it breaks,” he says. “That’s very similar to what a stress fracture is. The good news is that we can heal, whereas the metal just breaks. A stress fracture is caused by placing more strain or stress on a bone than it can take and it hurts. That’s your body’s way of saying, ‘You’re causing damage.’” People who are at risk for stress fractures are Caucasian women with osteopenia, and people who have significantly changed their activity level. “If you are completely sedentary and you go from nothing to walking three miles a day, that change in activity can be more than your bones are ready for,” Dr. Watson says. “Stress fractures are also common in people who are training for marathons and do not start training on a solid running base, or military recruits who go from normal activity to humping a 50-pound pack for miles.” While symptoms of pain and swelling may seem inconsequential, “The course of a stress fracture can be frustrating and somewhat like a game of chutes and ladders,” Dr. Watson says.
88
SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2011
“Symptoms may seem better and then get worse again and treatmentwise you are back to square one.” Dr. Watson says stress fractures occur often in tibias and the metatarsals – the longer bones in your feet. “You can also get them in the heel bone and in the hip, even though they are a little rarer,” he adds. As for diagnosis, “Sometimes you’ll see some healing bone around a fracture, but initially the x-rays are usually negative,” Dr. Watson says. “An MRI or a bone scan can be used to confirm the diagnosis, but for the most part this will not change treatment. I usually treat stress fractures by history. If a patient is not improving with treatment as expected, then I’ll get a MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis or to see if there’s something else going on.” A stress fracture is an injury that demands patience. “Everyone is a little different, but stress fractures tend to be slow to fully heal,” Dr. Watson notes. “Typically when you break a bone, it’s a six to eight week course for the bones to heal. For stress fractures, you almost have to double that because you don’t get the impetus for healing. Your body doesn’t really recognize it as a true fracture, so your normal bone maintenance system is in charge of healing.” “Treatment requires time and modifying activities to a level where you do not have pain,” Dr. Watson says. “A boot is prescribed for stress fractures in your lower tibia or foot so you can maintain some of your activity and bear weight on the injured bone while it is supported. If you have a stress fracture in your hip or upper part of your tibia, a lot of times you have to be on crutches to totally keep weight off of the injured bone so it can heal.”

Hearing Loss and Dementia “Her mind went traveling today. It packed its bags and slipped away. It wanders old paths and memory’s lanes and her dementia holds the reins.” ~ Alzheimer’s Association, 2008
T
hese words are the first stanza of a poem written by Laura. For Laura, poetry is an outlet. It allows her to grieve for her mother and her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can have crippling effects on individuals and their families, affecting one out of every 70 Americans. Dementia is a group of symptoms, which affect intellectual and social abilities to the degree that they interfere with daily life. According to the Mayo Clinic, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive condition causing changes to the brain that worsen with time. For patients with Alzheimer’s disease, their brain cells degenerate and die causing a steady decline in memory and mental function. So what does this have to do with hearing loss? Since around 1980, experts in hearing have observed a higher occurrence of hearing loss among adults with Alzheimer’s disease than in adults without it. So what is the relationship between these two conditions? After 12 years of investigation, a group of researchers from John Hopkins University believe they have the answer to this question. Frank Lin along with others at John Hopkins followed over
600 dementia-free adults for 12 years, tracking their hearing and cognition abilities. This study found that among adults with hearing loss, there was a greater occurrence of dementia. This trend strengthened as degree of hearing loss increased. Adults with mild hearing loss were twice as likely to develop dementia. An individual with mild hearing loss will be able to communicate with ease in a one-on-one environment, but may struggle when background noise is present. Adults with moderate hearing loss were three times as likely to develop dementia and when severe hearing loss was present the risk increased to five times the likelihood. While this study shows increased risk for dementia in adults with hearing loss, it is yet to be determined if hearing loss is an early marker for dementia or if it is an identifiable, treatable risk factor. If you have a known hearing loss, this certainly does not guarantee you will develop dementia. Could treating hearing loss with amplification have a positive impact on reducing or slowing the development of dementia? This is the million-dollar question. Lin and colleagues theorize that hearing loss may be causally related to dementia as it causes exhaustion of cognitive reserve, social isolation and disruption of sensory nerve fibers.
Hearing aids allow for increased auditory stimulation to the brain, improved communication, social interactions and reduced depression. When hearing loss is present, greater cognitive resources are dedicated to hearing taking away from other processes such as working memory.
Stephanie Wubben, AuD, CCC-A
Hearing aids allow for increased auditory stimulation to the brain, improved communication, social interactions and reduced depression. Researchers at John Hopkins are continuing this research and have begun a study to look specifically at the impact of hearing aid usage in adults suffering from dementia. For more information on the relationship between hearing loss and dementia or to request resources, please contact Dr. Stephanie Wubben at 605.338.6251. Meet KaCey Begeman Struckman, Miss Huntress USA 2011. She’s an outdoorswoman, but she’s the epitome of grace and glamour. This smart and strong woman knows how to climb into

here is more to KaCey Begeman Struckman than meets the eye. She is a polished, attractive young professional, but also she claims the title of Miss Huntress USA 2011. Not a stereotypical hunter, KaCey discovered her passion just four years ago and has never looked back. Originally from Centerville, South Dakota, she spent her childhood moving from South Dakota to California to Oregon and then back to South Dakota in 1991. However, the second time around, her parents Terry and Valerie Begeman chose Rapid City as home where KaCey and her brother Corey graduated from Stevens High School. Growing up in the Black Hills, KaCey’s love for the outdoors thrived. However at that time, she focused solely on excelling at outdoor sports, not hunting. A golf star in high school, she was recruited by Chadron State College in Nebraska to play on a golf scholarship where she went for her marketing degree. Following college, she moved to Sioux Falls to work as an assistant coach for Augustana College’s golf team. However, the love of the game lured her to move once more, this time to Kingwood, Texas working as a golf pro.

“I was then offered a once in a lifetime position to work as a golf pro for Ben Crenshaw at his exclusive golf club in Austin, Texas,” she says. “For the next six years, I lived the dream as a member of the PGA of America. It was a great life. After I got married and had our daughter Bailee, we returned to South Dakota to be closer to family and I took a position as assistant golf pro at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls.” Following her divorce in 2007, KaCey was searching for a way to improve her 96

body, mind and soul and found a new joy in running. “I started running because I wanted to get into shape,” she says. “I’d put Bailee in my jogging stroller, and I started out by running one mile a day. It then became four, then eight and then I started running marathons and I was good at it. I finished eight full marathons and even qualified to compete in the famous Boston Marathon in 2007. Due to an accident in 2009, I stepped back quite a bit. Now, I do half marathons and other smaller races.” It was at this point that KaCey discov-
ered her passion for hunting. “My friend Brad got me into the sport of hunting by buying me my first bow,” she says. “Growing up, my dad and brother would take me trap shooting, but I never got the bug to climb in a tree stand or walk the fields with them. I always thought it was a man’s sport, but once a bow was put in my hands it became a huge part of my life.” As a single parent, KaCey always keeps her seven-year-old daughter Bailee priority number one, and she enjoys every minute they have together. “I got her a bow about

two years ago and she’s been shooting ever since, and loves it,” she says. “The first hunt we went on together was a South Dakota goose hunt. It was three o’clock in the morning, and she popped out of bed and was ready to go. I think it’s awesome that we can share this. I was so ecstatic that she does enjoy being out there with me.” KaCey notes, “Hunting can be intimidating since it’s traditionally a boy’s sport. However, women are becoming a huge part of it, and I think it’s great. Men have been 100 percent supportive of my entry into it.” Making the transition from hobby to lifestyle was an easy decision for her. “My teammate and I were encouraged to enter a competition called the Campbell’s Outdoor Challenge,” KaCey says. “The competition is based on a two-person team that competes through five different events scheduled throughout the year. The Challenge provides a competitive sporting event format for professional hunters and cameramen teams to match their skills in filming hunts. It consists of a professional video circuit of 11 teams from across the United States with the ultimate champion determined by the team accumulating the most video points throughout the events that form the circuit. We started in South Carolina for a hog hunt, then we went to Tell City, Indiana for turkey, Buffalo, South Dakota for antelope and Carmi, Illinois for whitetail. It was pretty exciting because we ended up winning the entire competition. They made the Campbell’s Challenge into a series that will start airing on TV in August 2011 on the Versus channel.” In 2011, KaCey was approached to compete for the Miss Huntress USA contest. “There were two girls from each state and Canada that were entered in the competition,” she says. “It was narrowed down by votes, one girl from each state then down to the top 30, the top 15, top ten and soon top five. After the top five were picked, we entered an essay about our love for the outdoors and that was voted on by a panel of judges. I was blown away when I learned I had captured the title as Miss Huntress USA 2011. I’m not only honored, but extremely proud to be representing the women in the outdoors across the nation as Miss Huntress 2011 and will respect the title to its fullest.”

“My daughter Bailee is everything to me and being an excellent role model for her and for others is very important to me. It’s an honor to be Miss Huntress USA 2011 and representing women in the outdoors.” ~ KaCey Begemen Struckman
As perhaps the most exciting aspect of winning Miss Huntress 2011, KaCey received a trip of a lifetime. “I won an African safari ten day hunting trip, which I’m taking my brother Corey on,” she says. “What better way to experience the outdoors than with my brother on a safari hunt in Africa, a place that we both have dreamt about? It’s going to be an amazing experience.” And KaCey’s opportunities are just starting to take flight as a marketing manager for Strut and Rut, an all-new energy drink for hunters. “I never dreamt I could be doing what I love for a career,” she says. “I love what I do now, but it feels like everything’s starting to fall into place. It’s been a challenge raising Bailee as a single parent, and now it’s starting to work out for her and me.” Today, five words that define KaCey as a mother, businesswoman and one of the nation’s leading hunters are sleek, intelligent, independent, vibrant and strong. These words are not so different from nature’s wild beauty she has chosen to surround herself with. Arguably one of the most accomplished outdoorswomen South Dakota, KaCey is proud of where she has been and where she is going. “I am so excited about this new position with Solvi Brands and having the opportunity to make a lifetime career in that arena,” she says. “The outdoors and making that my career is pretty awesome. The only thing better would be to involve Bailee in it. I don’t regret not discovering hunting before. The golf industry was a huge part of my life growing up, and it was a dream I chased. It’s funny how everything happens for a reason, and it led me to where SFW I am today.”

A profile of area artists and their recent work that have caught our eye. Randi Murphy Nature, the Size of Your House It won’t surprise most people to hear an artist likes to paint things she finds in nature, but painting them the size of a wall in a home is pretty surprising. Randi Murphy, Harrisburg, is an artist who goes into homes and businesses to leave giant walls full of images that make people smile and feel good. she said, smiling. She recently donated her time painting a fourth mural at the Ronald McDonald house for the 365 Giving Tree project – a large tree with many branches with a little girl on a swing. Randi went to Southwest Minnesota State University in Minnesota and has a degree in art. While her two children are young she spends much of her time painting canvases at her kitchen table, too. “It’s easier to keep an eye on the kids while I paint,” she said. Next year her youngest goes to Kindergarten and she intends to step up the pace of both her mural and canvas work.
Her work varies from whimsical children’s paintings to detailed botanical canvases. Randi’s art on canvases can be seen at Aviena, AMaVo, Elegant Mommy and
home. A woodland forest scene, a tree house and a hot air balloon scene cheer up the rooms of the temporary housing for families of hospitalized kids. “It’s especially fun watching the excitement on the children’s faces when they see the murals,”

Murals Immersed in the art While looking at a framed painting might make a person feel like they’re looking out a window at the scene, a mural puts a person in the scene. Throughout history, artists have used murals to put patrons in the countryside, a religious scene or even in the walls of palaces far, far away. “One thing I think about is all the mural projects created in public buildings as part of the WPA project during the 1930s,” Kara Dirkson, art appraiser, said. The Works Progress Administration provided work for artists in the 1930s. Grant Wood, Iowa painter of American Gothic, supervised and created many of the WPAera murals. The murals Grant planned at the Iowa State University Library are treasured pieces on campus, but he also painted murals on commission in hotel dining rooms in Sioux City, Council Bluffs and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The hotels’ owner, Eugene Eppley (Eppley Airfield), wanted the murals to make people feel like they were dining in a cornfield. The murals in Cedar Rapids and Sioux City have been saved and are on display in museums. Sadly, the Council Bluffs murals are no longer in one piece, but a group is trying to get them restored. Tim Hoheisel, director of communication at the Center for Western Studies, said, “Like a lot of art, murals depict snapshots in time and they are as varied as art in other mediums. They can be a record of the prevailing cultural trends, like the many WPA era murals around the country. They can be religious, like the Sistine Chapel. Or they can make a bold political statement like the murals of Banksy and other street artists.” SFW

Peachwave
A Frozen Delight can be a Healthy Alternative
By Jody Gust • Photos by Hauschildt’s Photography
R
ev up your taste buds, frozen yogurt fans! Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt has made a sweet landing at the Bridges at 57th in Sioux Falls, rocketing in popularity since opening its doors in June.
Sam Khadka, Peachwave manager, explains the unique benefits of the specialty self-serve frozen yogurt retailer. “At Peachwave, customers can choose their favorite flavor of yogurt from the 14 different rotating flavors that we have available at any given time such as cheesecake, tiramisu, peanut butter, raspberry and many more,” he says. “People can even mix and match different flavors of yogurt and choose from 42 different toppings, which include fresh fruits such as strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, kiwi, pineapple and other fun toppings such as candies, nuts and favorite cereals.” Since customers get to satisfy their personal preferences, Khadka says that people essentially come up with their own frozen creations. “You do not just treat yourself with your favorite yogurt, you actually get a chance to mix and match the various flavors of yogurt and
the variety of toppings we offer,” he says. “Combining creations can be almost infinitely varied, depending on how you prepare it each time. Customers also get the opportunity to sample the yogurt first before deciding on the flavors that they want to get.” Beyond tempting customer taste buds with flavors and toppings, Khadka says Peachwave offers convenience and time efficiency. “Customers can choose the amount of yogurt and toppings they want because of the weigh-and-pay option,” he adds. “That way the customer pays for only the quantity he or she desires.” Dishing kudos as a refreshing dessert, Khadka shares the health benefits of frozen yogurt. “Sure, yogurt does taste great, but more than that, it actually makes a healthy dessert,” he says. “Because of the Lactobacteria (good bacteria) in the yogurt, which helps to keep your colon clean and free of wastes while also aiding in digestion, yogurt can decrease your risk of contracting colon cancer. More importantly and especially for women, a regular yogurt diet along with other dairy can help in prevention of osteoporosis (loss of bone mass or minerals within the bones) because yogurt has a high amount of calcium and vitamin D, and it helps absorb nutrients in other foods as well.” Serving a welcome perk for sensitive diets, Khadka says around 90 percent of
the Peachwave products are gluten-free and the “good for you, good for your body” message also extends to lactose intolerant individuals. “Yogurt is cultured to contain a digestive enzyme called lactase, the enzyme that most of the lactose intolerant individuals do not have. It is easier to digest than milk and it is easier on the stomach.” Upholding their motto of “Promoting healthy dessert in a fun way,” Peachwave is a new concept that is creating a big splash in the Sioux Falls community. ven though natural stone originates outdoors doesn’t mean selecting your new countertops has to be an outdoor adventure too. Now you can handpick your stone slab with the convenience of an indoor showroom at Everything’s Granite’s new location in Sioux Falls, SD. Mark Pownell, manager at Everything’s Granite, says their new showroom will feature 60 to 80 full size granite slabs. “For the past two years, we’ve been selling our natural stone countertops from samples, but now the customer can handpick their countertops with the convenience of being indoors,” he adds. Even with the large in-store selection, the option to custom order a piece is always available. From mountainsides abroad to miles below the earth’s surface, carefully crafted slabs of unique stone are brought in for customers to make their selection. Various colors, patterns and designs add instant drama and value to a home. Pownell says that stone countertops should be hand selected because each piece is unique, which is yet another benefit for homeowners looking to add instant drama to their space. Although kitchen countertops are the most popular, Pownell says their granite stone can be used in a variety of places throughout the home. Everything’s Granite offers free in-home estimates and professional installation. Despite the name, Everything’s Granite also specializes in unique natural stones such as limestone, travertine, soapstone and engineered stone such as quartz. They also offer solid surface countertops and a selection of

sinks. “A natural stone or quartz countertop can transform any surface,” Pownell says. “Granite is always fashionable and always beautiful. It can enhance any room that has a counter in it, such as a bathroom and of course a kitchen.” Other than beauty, natural stone is also known for its durability. Pownell looks forward to being able to better serve customers while shopping for granite. “Our new indoor showroom is great because our customers can still hand select
their stone countertops, but they don’t have to put up with the weather,” he says. fter ten years in the women’s fashion industry, one could certainly say Tracy Kroon appropriately named her latest Sioux Falls business venture. Rolling off the tongue with a sense of spicy zest, savvy, as the new women’s boutique is called, exudes sophistication and a sense of practicality, which are all components of Kroon’s business model. “My new business will offer a unique combination of clothing and accessories ranging from casual, yoga-inspired pieces to special occasion items,” Kroon says. She goes on to add that the product line will include trendy options as well as timeless silhouettes for those that prefer a more traditional route. And for those wanting to keep it casual, top picks include a variety of denim, chunky sweaters, leggings and graphic tees. Kick things up a notch for a night out on the town with fashion forward dress pants, going-out tops and cocktail and long dresses. Whatever you crave, savvy will add its definition of smart to your closet. And don’t forget the accessories. “The jewelry lines that will be found in the store reflect my belief that jewelry is very personal to the wearer, and should convey a special message or remind the person of a specific time or place,” Kroon adds. Finish off your signature style with a handbag in an array of casual canvas or luxurious leathers that are also offered at savvy. “I feel that I have worked really hard to put together an exciting array of product choices, and I hope the customers agree,”
Kroon says. P r e v i ou s l y, Kroon was one of the owners of BCBG MAXAZRIA in Sioux Falls. She hopes that the special relationships she has with BCBG customers will help launch her new store, which is scheduled to open on August. “We enjoyed our relationship with BCBG and still believe in the brand, but the new boutique provides opportunity for expansion of the product lines, sizing and pricing,” she says. “I think it is something our previous customers and new customers will really enjoy.” When it comes to the boutique browsing, it’s as much about the experience as it is the products. “I hope to provide an environment for people to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience of shopping,” Kroon says. “I will also employ some of the same people, which really excites me because of their commitment to customer service.” The new store will be located in the same space at River Plaza, but will have undergone significant renovations.

Discreetly tucked into a new location at 4201 S Minnesota Avenue, the Associates have achieved their goal of striking a balance between providing professional care and creating a clinic environment that exudes soothing elegance. “Plastic Surgery Associates of South Dakota finally has a building to match the quality of the surgeons,” Marvin Smoot, clinic manager, says. “We are very excited to offer our patients professional services with convenient access and anonymity.” Magnificent windows, stunning exterior and interior stone work, shining mahogany, deep browns, earth tones and splashes of copper hues provide a tranquil welcome while a cascading water wall in the reception area adds a utopian feel. “It’s about patient, employee and physician satisfaction,” says Marvin, noting the extensive planning for optimal patient comfort and care at the new location. The breathtaking beauty may provide an environment like no other but, “There is no change in the quality of care,” Marvin assures. “We know people will be pleased with what they see and the new location will not only allow greater access, convenience and satisfaction for our patients but the opportunity to expand our professional services and product lines.” The new location of Plastic Surgery Associates of South Dakota at 4201 S Minnesota Avenue has admirably raised the

Wings Gymnastics Academy Offers Programs Kids will Flip For

ither in a coaching capacity or through competition, Alicia Reiners has been involved in gymnastics for the last 18 years. She says, “Gymnastics has always been a huge part of my life and is a true passion of mine.” Nine months ago, Reiners and her husband moved from Omaha to Sioux Falls with their three children. After working as a gymnastics coach in Omaha for a number of years, she decided that the move to South Dakota would provide her with a great opportunity to become a business owner. Reiners researched the gymnastic opportunities already available in Sioux Falls, and noticed that there were already a number of competitive options available. She comments, “I was glad to see that competitive gymnastics was strong in Sioux Falls as those programs are definitely needed. At the same time, I wanted to provide a recreational alternative for those who wanted to be involved in gymnastics in a non-competitive format.” Reiners searched for a location for her gym, and was able to secure property the same week she and her family moved into their new home in Sioux Falls. Wings Gymnastics Academy is located in the
Four Hills Plaza on Southeastern Avenue. Reiners says, “Our focus will be on kids who love gymnastics. We will give them a fun program with changing themes that will help them learn and develop while keeping them excited.” According to Reiners, Wings Gymnastics Academy programs are tailored to easily fit into the schedules of children who may also be involved in other activities.
Children realize many benefits from gymnastics, including the development of basic motor skills, balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and body control. While the activity is so beneficial to development, it is also a great deal of fun as Reiners also points out. “Kids naturally flip around while playing,” she says. “It isn’t surprising then to see them love gymnastics.” Reiners leads the structured classes offered at Wings Gymnastics Academy. When the number of students enrolled increases and the ratio of students to coach gets too high, the instructor says she will consider hiring additional staff that share her passion for gymnastics. This passion is evident when Reiners describes her coaching experiences. “When a child has spent a long time trying to master a new skill like a cartwheel, or walking across the beam by themselves, I love to see the pride in their eyes when they finally succeed.” she says. “These moments are everything to me, and are why I spend my life doing this.” SFW Wings Gymnastics Academy 3612 S. Crazy Daisy Consignment Boutique An upscale and trendy shop for women By Margaret Pennock • Photos by Hauschildt’s Photography
I
t’s a fresh new approach to consignment. Business partners Jennica Johnson and Shary John have opened Crazy Daisy Consignment Boutique specializing in upscale, gently used clothing from newborn to teen, baby equipment, toys and maternity items. Crazy Daisy Consignment Boutique is a fantastic new venue for parents looking for quality items with a reasonable price tag, but also it’s a great resource for those who are ready to pass items on. “I’ve always had a passion for creating a boutique-style consignment store that would allow for an excellent customer experience, while providing a win-win opportunity for a consigner or a buyer,” Johnson says. Tuned in to modern families, Crazy Daisy Consignment Boutique promotes available merchandise and sales through social media, including Facebook and Craig’s List. “We hope to build customer relationships by providing online access to the seller’s inventory, allowing sellers to bring in ‘all seasons wear all year long,’ and introducing local vendor ‘mom-made’ items for purchase,” Johnson says. “We also sell hard-to-find, excellent-to-perfect maternity items.”
Customers can expect to save 30 to 50 percent off retail prices for name brands including Janie & Jack, Gymboree, Gap, Baby Gap, Hannah Anderson, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Rocawear, Baby Phat, Roxy, Carter’s, Peg Perego, Justice, Hollister, Buckle, Vanity, Aeropostale, Fox, Hydraulic, Charlotte Russe and Motherhood. 110

If you’re looking to become a consigner, you can take advantage of online account access to watch sales and monitor account balance. In addition, you’ll also receive 15 percent off your first purchase from the boutique. Consignor guidelines require all items to be in excellent ready-to-sell condition, freshly laundered, in style and in season. Spring and summer items are sold from February to August and winter items are sold from August to January. Certain items will be sold year round such as swimwear, jeans and lightweight outerwear. “We hope that by offering hard-to-find maternity items, providing online access to seller inventory and by taking all season clothing, our consigners’ experience will be both excellent and convenient,” John says. “We have plans to build our clientele through ongoing social network sales, the promotion of fun events for kids and moms and offering excellent-to-perfect items for purchase. Our goal is to provide a trendy boutique approach where everyone will want to stop by often, as inventory changes SFW regularly.” Crazy Daisy Consignment Boutique 1513 E 10th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 605-275-2322 www.crazydaisyconsignment.com

This is a truly heart-warming true story about a four-year old boy in Nebraska. In an emergency surgery the little boy slips from consciousness, entering heaven. When the little boy survives, he tells his family that he looked down at them from heaven, seeing the surgeon, and his parents praying in the waiting room. He met his grandfather who died thirty years before his birth, and his miscarried sister his family never even told him about. The little boy describes everything from God to his dead relatives. His family, not knowing what to believe, listened carefully, and his father wrote down everything.

In most recent years, many of the worlds’ top museums have been giving up priceless antiquities to Greece and Italy. The monetary value is over half a billion dollars. Why are they moved with such generosity? The answer lies at Getty, a rich and troubled museum. Scandalous revelations have surfaced that it had been buying looted antiquities for decades. Acting as a fly-on-the-wall, Felch and Frammolino give us the inner workings of an amazing world-class museum and the outlandish people that run through it. From investigators to a narcissist CEO, this is thrilling, chilling, and very real. All set in novelistic detail.
