Noble Warriors Project Yoga Studio Owner Shares Healing Power of Caring

Story and Photos by Margaret Pennock

F

or Jennifer Long, practicing and instructing yoga at her studio Santosha Hot Yoga is her true calling. Sharing her love for the lifestyle and the healing power it can provide is why she opened her studio in Sioux Falls. So when she had the opportunity to visit with a military veteran who was inquiring about trying yoga, she was inspired to aid veterans in her own way. She shares, “A veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder came in to ask about classes since he had heard yoga could help with his condition. Unfortunately, I didn’t ever see this gentleman again, and I can only assume that he was intimidated by the idea of walking into a yoga class with a bunch of people wrapped up like pretzels. The price tag caught his attention too. It was then that I started the Noble Warriors Project.” Jennifer launched the program with free-will donation-based classes so that military personnel and their families could experience the healing power of yoga. (continued on page 24) 22

“There are a lot of studies that show yoga can be really helpful for people who suffer from PTSD. I would love to see more join a class and see if it helps to relieve some of the symptoms over time.” ~ Jennifer Long, owner, Santosha Hot Yoga

Shortly after her first class, Jennifer chose to expand the program by using the donations raised to purchase supplies for care packages to be sent overseas for deployed military personnel. Now, she has expanded her classes to include community members interested in contributing to the care packages. She notes, “I thought the Noble Warriors Project was a nice way to give back to those who sacrifice so much to keep our country free and safe. I am passionate about using yoga to give back. It is also a nice opportunity for those who may not be able to afford yoga as classes are all donation-based.” Having mailed her first shipment of care packages in June, she has several more slated to send in the upcoming months. “I wanted to give back and I’m always looking for different outlets. This one caught my eye because I think it is so unfair that not only do some people experience terrible situations, but those situations don’t go away. I have learned a lot doing this project and am thankful for that. I feel empowered to move forward with the next shipment with even more excitement.” For more information about the Noble Warriors Project email Jennifer at Santosha Hot Yoga at info@ sfw santoshahotyoga.com or call 605-275-YOGA.

Step Up for Heroes

Memorial Stair Climb Combines Fitness, Public Safety Awareness By Darcie Bontje

Ellie Highstreet

I

n terms of impact, Sept. 11, 2001, left an indelible mark on the nation. Creating a countervailing impact is exactly the focus of the Sioux Falls Firefighters Association as it organizes Step Up for Heroes, a memorial stair climb on Sept. 19 at Howard Wood Field. Participants, which will include members of the public, will climb 110 flights of stairs to remember the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the terror attacks at the World Trade Center. Michael Gramlick, a captain with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and president of Sioux Falls Firefighters Association, says, “As one firefighter, I can have only so much effect on the fire floor, but this is the type of event that can affect a lot of people.” The Sioux Falls Firefighters Association represents more than 300 active and retired firefighters and their families. The event’s registration fee will build awareness about the group and raise funds for its charitable giving projects. “We want to use it as a platform to promote the public safety issues that we hold dear,” Michael says. The goal is a multi-faceted event—one of “jubilant reverence,” he says. Each participant will complete the 110 floor climb with a badge bearing the name and photograph of a fallen 9/11 hero, symbolically completing the journey they undertook in the Twin Towers to save trapped civilians and comrades. At the same time, Howard Wood’s infield will be dedicated to the group’s efforts on child safety seats, a fire detector giveaway and children’s safety.

26

“9/11 is the galvanizing event, but it is not limited to that,” he says. “As firefighters, we would love to believe that where we do the most good is storming into a burning building, but smoke detectors and child safety seats save more lives than I ever will.” (continued on page 28)

Other Step Up events are held across the country, but the closest one to Sioux Falls is in Kansas City. “We hope to establish ourselves as one of the signature annual events in the Midwest,” he says. In addition to members of the public, teams from other fire departments, law enforcement and the military are expected to participate. Some firefighters likely will complete the stair climb in full gear, Michael says, as a way to memorialize what the fallen firefighters endured. As the event nears, he says, “We are finding that this is turning into an event similar to a destination 5k. People look for these events as a reason to go visit someone.” The association, which in the past has used a rodeo and a calendar for fundraising, has been organizing the event for two years. “We are excited to see this event come to fruition,” Michael says.

After All This Time Couple Reconnects, Marries Years After High School Meeting

By Natalie Keller • Photos by Olivia Walter Photography

K

ent Muller and Darcy Dunker-Muller have a unique love story that can be traced back about 15 years to when they were part of Future Farmers of America in high school. “We were on a bus trip to Louisville that we just ended up meeting each other and became friends that way,” Darcy says. The couple dated for a short time while in college at South Dakota State University before breaking things off and then occasionally communicating through Facebook. “We went our separate ways,” Kent says. Then about four years ago, Darcy was attending a bachelorette party in Brookings when she ran into a co-worker of Kent’s who gave her his phone number. “He was the best wingman he never knew he had,” Darcy says. Soon after reconnecting, the couple picked up where they left off and dated for a few years before Kent put things in motion toward marriage. “We were going to go to Mama’s Ladas for lunch and as I’m heading down there I see him heading to the house,” Darcy says about their engagement day. Kent told Darcy to come to the house so they could ride to the restaurant together. When Darcy pulled up to the house, Kent was waiting in the entryway on one knee with a ring. “I did pretty well,” Kent says. Kent says he knew it was time to settle down because he could be himself around Darcy. “She’s the only one who constantly laughs at what I’m saying,” Kent says.

30

SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2015

Planning soon commenced and Darcy had an idea of what she wanted while Kent just went with the flow during their eight-month engagement. “I would be courteous and run it by him,” Darcy says. “I’m kind of a planner by nature so I kind of started collecting things almost immediately.” The couple held their ceremony and reception in Sioux Falls on April 18. The ceremony took place at Resurrection Lutheran Church and the reception was at The Point.

Flowers consisted of yellow and white tulips and eclectic decorations for the reception space. Darcy says the day included small personal touches, such as serving ice cream from SDSU, yellow sunglasses for the bridal party, and Poppy’s Popcorn for the guests to munch on and take home as party favors. What the couple thinks is important in a relationship: laughing, compromising and taking your time. “Being able to find those moments where you can just laugh through it,” Darcy says. “Having time for just sfw the two of us is a big thing, too.”

SFWcouples connection

Play Together, Stay Together Couples Find Fun, Friendship & Happiness on Golf Course Story and Photos by Margaret Pennock

F

or many couples, finding something more interesting to do than go out to eat can be a struggle. And finding an outdoor activity that can be enjoyed together can be challenging, especially if you’re at different levels of fitness or expertise. Golf, however, can bring a couple together and provide hours of uninterrupted together time in a beautiful and relaxing setting. Chellee Nemec of Sioux Falls says, “I enjoy going golfing with my boyfriend, John, because it’s great quality time that we can spend together without distractions. It is usually just us or we meet up with a few friends and we always have great conversations and a lot of laughs.”

32

SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2015

The key to enjoying your outing is to have fun! If your partner is a better golfer, don’t stress about keeping up. Instead, adjust your game and play “best ball,” where you play the best ball in collaboration, or have your partner give you tips on improving your form and ultimately your game. Studies show that couples who have fun together are happier long-term. An interesting fact is that this desire for fun is even more important for men than women.

Because you can rent a cart or choose to walk the course, the physical aspect of the game can be suited to each couple. Plan to spend nearly three hours per nine holes if you’re walking and a bit over two hours if you’re driving a cart. Most courses have a clubhouse that offers at least a limited menu and bar service so that you can grab a bite to eat and enjoy a drink. This is a great time to kick back and just enjoy one another’s company after an afternoon on the course. Chellee adds, “Winters in South Dakota can be brutal and long, so when we have the opportunity to spend the day in the sun, play a sport we both enjoy and spend quality time together technology-free, we take adsfw vantage of it.” SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2 0 1 5

Nail Art

The Do’s & Don’ts By Brianna Venekamp

N

ail art is one of those trends that’s here to stay, but that doesn’t mean anything and everything goes. Here are some simple tips on how to wear it best:

Don’t… go overboard with too many different colors or

ornately decorate every nail.

Instead, do try one, ornate accent nail on one or both

hands – ring finger, pinkie or pointer finger. Use a neutral base color with a brighter or contrasting color as an accent.

Don’t…

keep nails really long. Nails that are too long with lots of busy patterns can be distracting and overpowering. And, stay away from almond shape nails, which can end up looking clawlike.

Instead, do keep nails short or

mid-length in a round or square shape, or a more natural oval shape that mimics that of your cuticles.

use faces or cartoon characters on your nails.

Instead, do experiment with geo-

metric patterns such as triangles, stripes, and circles.

Don’t…

think every nail has to the look the same.

Instead, do combine various types of nail art in one design, using polish, decals, and/or 3-D elements such as rhinestones to add dimension. Finally... be creative and fun!

Easy Rider The Biker Jacket

By Brianna Venekamp

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but that’s not the only reason biker chic fashion is everywhere. This season, variations abound on the traditional biker jacket.

Difference is in the details

The demand for unique pieces is high, so watch for leather jackets with fur accents, extra hardware such as zippers, oversized cuts and wide shawl collars.

New cuts

Cropped, long, tailored, flared or loose-fitting—each version creates a different look. Find the one that fits you best.

No pants required

Pairing a floor-length maxi skirt with a biker jacket adds a touch of glamour. Or try pairing a black jacket with office-style garments, such as a cropped sequined vest, white blouse and below-the-knee pencil skirt. Take the look to a different level and create a grunge effect by adding a knitted grey beanie and mannish lace slip-ons.

Beyond black

And as far as colors go, black is classic, but you might consider burgundy, camel, brown, rich red, grey, bright yellow, or maybe even leopard print—if you’re daring.

Beach Landing Know Your Expectations Before Selecting Your Destination By Thea Miller Ryan

T

rade the snow for the sand this winter and head to a beach that’s all but guaranteed to give you the break you need from the cold. Choosing which beach might be as simple as deciding if you want a total release from all the world’s social pressures, or a mixture of beach relaxation and fine dining with some socializing, says Rae Gene Larson of AAA Travel in Sioux Falls. The most formal beach choice is a Caribbean destination, Rae Gene says, because of resort policies. Men can’t wear sandals to dinner and women have to dress up a bit, too, she says. But even the most formal of beach clothing is country club casual. “We’ve become such a casual society (that) sometimes having those restrictions on dining apparel throws people off,” she says. On the other hand, any of the Dutch Antilles – Bonaire, Curacao or Aruba – are laid back with no dress codes. Winter temperatures hover around 80 in the Dutch Antilles “and all three places offer snorkeling, scuba diving, the people are marvelous and it’s a very laid-back society,” Rae Gene says.

Jamaica is another sure-fire beach vacation. “The island is really divided into three areas,” Rae Gene offers, “Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril. All three are absolutely gorgeous.” Everyone flies into Montego Bay. If you have only a short time to spend there, Rae Gene says stay in Montego instead of busing to the other locations. “You get some jet noise, but you see the white sand beach and the blue water, and 20 minutes later you don’t hear or see the planes.” Choosing a Mexican beach vacation often means choosing between beaches you want to look at for their beauty and beaches you want to swim in or walk along, Mary Jo Nelson, owner of Travel Partners Travel Agency, said. Caribbean Sea beaches are the most swimmable and walkable. Pacific Ocean beaches are intensely beautiful, but the water is cloudier and the beaches are rougher. “The Caribbean Seas beaches are beautiful in Cancun,” she said. “I always recommend a high floor with an ocean view. The water goes from light green to dark blue to deeper blues – they’re just beautiful. Riviera Maya also has many different types of beaches including white powdery ones,” she said, great for walkers. Pacific beaches like Cabo San Lucas are beautiful for sightseeing, but mainly unwalkable, she said. Other Mexican beach choices include Ixtapa and Puerto Vallarta, both known for their beauty. Char Roth of Sioux Falls and her husband chose Cancun for a total escape from winter. “We stayed at a resort, walked on the beach, read five books in six days – it was total relaxation,” she says. “I loved early morning walks on the beach. To me, there is something very relaxing about listening to the waves and the feel of hot sand under your feet – especially in the middle of winter. A refreshing beverage and a good book definitely added to the enjoyment,” Char says. Choosing which sand you want under your feet isn’t hard if you know what kind of vacation you desire. sfw For tips on packing for a beach vacation, see the extended story on our website at www.siouxfallswoman.net.

The Crossover Question Segment Features Best of Both Worlds By Jill Funke

F

amilies in the market for a new vehicle have many options. Increasingly, crossovers are garnering attention for their many attractive attributes. Unlike SUVs, which typically are built on a truck platform, crossovers are built on a car platform, offering a smoother ride and better handling and cornering. At the same time, crossovers have some preferable SUV features, such as high ground clearance and all-wheel drive. In the end, crossovers can provide the best of both styles.

2015 Cadillac SRX

Families who spend a considerable amount of time in their vehicle appreciate the 2015 Cadillac SRX crossover for its elements of indulgence. A 4G WiFi system will keep occupants connected throughout each trip, while the CUE (Cadillac User Experience) interface deftly controls the vehicle’s entertainment system. A V6 engine is standard on the SRX, and the overall design provides great control and a relaxing ride. Substantial cargo space is welcomed by the family who continually totes a large haul.

2015 Ford Edge

The 2015 Ford Edge is the budget-friendly crossover that provides busy families with quite a bang for their automotive buck. A fully redesigned Edge marries the sedan experience with the roominess of an SUV. On the inside, Ford has stepped up the quality of the cabin materials while keeping the MyKey feature, which parents can use to set driving limits for their teen drivers. Automated parking and lane-keeping intervention help round out the Edge’s overall attractiveness to the discriminating driver. 58

Luxury is the name of the game for families who purchase the 2015 BMW X5. The driver sits a little higher while driving this trend-setting crossover that operates more like an energetic car than an SUV. The X5 is available with a third-row seat that is perfect for children, and the second row is split into three sections to increase cargo capacity. Ten-way heated power front seats and driver memory settings, along with the X5’s all-weather capability are welcome treats for any driver, especially one who values the prestige that comes with owning a BMW.

Families in search of an affordable, distinct crossover need look no further than the 2016 Lincoln MKX. A face-lift has left the MKX with a contemporary sheen, while adaptive steering and three different driving modes transform the driving experience. The intelligence of all-wheel drive makes every driving environment manageable, and modern engineering leaves the MKX brimming with well-earned confidence. Buyers will adore the new auto-hold feature that provides breaking action for the driver, keeping the vehicle stopped until the gas pedal is once again engaged.

Digital Eyestrain Why Electronic Devices Are Causing Chaotic Effects On Vision

F

or most people, it’s commonplace to spend hours a day viewing a computer screen, tablet or smartphone at work, school or just for fun. However, these activities are causing issues that are now being recognized as digital eyestrain, also referred to as computer vision syndrome or smartphone strain. According to optometrist Dr. Meghan Montreal of 20/20 Eye Care, P.C., “Computer vision syndrome is discomfort occurring after two or more hours of use of computers, smartphones, tablets or video games. Viewing a screen is more difficult than printed pages because letters have less contrast with the background and screens produce extra glare and reflections. This can cause more strain on the focusing system of the eye. It can be worsened by a combination of factors including poor lighting, glare, poor seating posture and viewing distance, or uncorrected vision problems.”

The condition doesn’t discriminate and children are just as likely to have the problem as adults. Cases are on the rise because of the influx of using laptops for schoolwork and the massive appeal of social media and smartphone use, and as a result, Dr. Montreal has been diagnosing more cases of digital eyestrain than ever before. “Since children are on computers, phones and tablets more and more both at home and school, they are also at risk for developing digital eyestrain. Sometimes the board or distance vision can become blurry from long periods of screen time. This occurs because the focusing system is having trouble adjusting when looking from near to far and a computer/near prescription can help the eyes relax to make this adjustment easier.” To ensure eye health, Dr. Montreal recommends scheduling a routine eye exam annually just as you would a doctor’s appoint-

ment. “This condition can be identified through a comprehensive eye exam including patient history, lifestyle and symptoms, correcting even minor vision problems such as astigmatism or farsightedness, and testing both eye focusing and eye movements. Routine examinations can identify these problems early on and prevent worsening of symptoms to ensure healthy vision for a lifetime.”

Dr. Montreal shares, “Proper eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions will definitely help. Sometimes, a separate computer prescription with extra coatings or tints may be beneficial to achieve the best vision and comfort for that viewing distance. Style, Support and Siblings: A Custom Home Built with Heart By Jennifer Dumke • Photos by Cipher Imaging Architectural Photography

ne home, a pair of siblings and a lot of creativity combined to make a house that fits the needs and style of its homeowners both today and in the future. Starting in 2013, the two sisters embarked on a journey to build a home together that would allow them to grow old at home. Even though their needs at the moment didn’t require amenities such as an elevator or a sit-down shower, they still find them useful on occasion. And the duo collaborated with custom homebuilder Lisa Schmidt, owner of Schmidt Construction Inc., to come up with a plan that suits their individual styles. Once the overall plan was complete, they began the detail process. SIOUX FALLS WOMAN • august/september 2 0 1 5

With an open concept that glows with natural sunlight, crisp white cabinets from Dakota Kitchen & Bath line the neutral walls yet contrast with the chocolate hues of the custom tile backsplash and granite countertops from Syverson Tile & Stone. Stainless-steel appliances from Mahlander’s Inc. and oilrubbed bronze faucets blend with the wrought-iron accents of the unique pendant light fixtures from Lamps & Shades Lighting Gallery. The subtle metal hues are carried through in the tile floors, which reflect bronze tones and coordinate with the floors of the grand foyer. Just off the kitchen, floorto-ceiling windows, which allow ample sunlight and extraordinary views, flank double patio doors. Dual patios, one covered with screened-in windows and the other a traditional open-air deck, are perfect for entertaining and multi-season use.

eeping with the same tones and exquisite attention to detail, the formal great room speaks for itself. A large wall of windows is covered with simple, sheer shades. Numerous custom touches, such as the dark-stained beams on the ceiling designed by Michael Perrizo and a fireplace by Hebron Brick Company, pave the way for the unique furniture and subtle accessories from Montgomery’s Furniture. Dual curved sofas—perfect for relaxing and watching the flat-screen television above the fireplace—surround a central, dark leather upholstered ottoman. The front entryway features a round foyer table accentuated with a large floral arrangement and unique hanging glass and wrought-iron pendant light. An oversized opening leads to the grand formal dining room with a simplistic style. An oversized, distressed dining room table features accents of whitewashed wood, which is also found on the sideboard. To soften the large span of natural grain, high-back upholstered chairs in crisp whites and dual tones add a touch of muted elegance that blends with the neutral walls and carpets. Leading from the formal dining room is a pass-through butler’s pantry. An extension of the kitchen elegance, custom cabinets granite countertops and wine cooler make for the perfect beverage station when entertaining. To ensure privacy with style, tempered glass French doors by Builders Millwork and Window lead to an office space, also on the main floor. A large peninsula-style desk and matching bookcase ensure both form and function. Additionally, the main-floor powder bath reflects a statement piece that provided design inspiration. A distressed gilded, gold-framed mirror is the center of attention and sets the stage for the dark, custom-built cabinets and rich granite countertops.

lthough the sisters collaborated on design choices for the common areas, each has their own master suite and bathroom. Without any debate, the main floor bedroom features light lavender walls, dazzling crystal and chrome sconces and romantic furniture. A creamy metallic upholstered headboard is tufted with rhinestone buttons from Evolve Interior Designs. Adding to the crystal creations are the coordinating nightstands and dresser, both reflecting metallic silver and mirrored façade. Delicate floral lilac bedding adds a touch of color, which is also seen in the upholstered accent chair. The master bath evokes a Roman style with white marble tile floors, white and grey variegated marble countertops and a large dangling crystal chandelier. Dual sinks include a central makeup area and are finished off with dark, custom wood cabinets and shiny silver hardware. A large built-in whirlpool tub and walk-in shower are also encased in custom tile to match the backsplash, with its tones of metallic silver, creamy whites and grey.

Wrought-iron accented stairs lead to the lower-level living space. When needed, an elevator located in the back entrance provides a safe and easy method to access the lower space. For added convenience, the space includes a laundry area and walk-in pantry. The lower level is like a separate living space but still reflects the same classic characteristics as the main floor. A

kitchenette with full-size dishwasher and French-door refrigerator features creamy white tile, wrought-iron barstools and neutral toned countertops. A small, whimsical pass-through opening serves as a “window” to a play area below the stairs for when neighborhood children, guests or family visit. The spacious family room is kept casual and relaxed with soft carpets, neutral

upholstered furniture and understated accent pieces. A span of windows and doors allows natural sunlight to flood the space and gives access to the backyard complete with a stamped concrete patio. Custom built by Amazing Space, a bookcase, which was one sister’s design requirement, fills one wall. A gas fireplace is surrounded by natural stone from Syverson Tile & Stone.

The lower-level master bedroom garnered inspiration from the desert. Simple wood furniture with stone slate accents, neutral tones and understated bedding make way for the custom fabric headboard. The lower-level master bathroom keeps with the same style but includes a walk-in Jacuzzi bathtub and infrared sauna, which were included for health reasons. With a love for entertaining, these sisters have created a home that welcomes neighborhood children, families and friends. To ensure there’s always a place to stay, an additional full bath and two bedrooms sit ready for guests. And even though the journey to living together was challenging at times, they both credit their builder for not only creating what they call their “Golden Girls home, but also easing their stress along the way. Today, they are adjusting to living together again after many years apart. And despite what the future holds, they will always have this home and the years they spent SFW together to remember.

Frozen Fever

Get Ready to Prep Your Landscape for Winter By Jennifer Dumke • Margaret Pennock

F

all is perfect for enjoying colorful foliage and cooler temperatures. However, it’s also a favorable time of year to properly prepare your landscape for winter. Kate Parkinson, owner of Stonegate Outdoors, has been working in the horticulture industry since 1980 and also teaches classes at Southeast Technical Institute. She offers some tips on getting your yard ready for the cold months. “One of the most important things a homeowner can do to prepare for winter is to water,” Kate says. Even though it sounds relatively simple, she does offer some helpful hints for hydration before reeling in the hoses. “Around the second week in October, deep water all permanent plantings to get the roots ready for freezing,” she says. For lawns, trees and shrubs, she suggests properly timed, deep watering throughout the growing season and says to take into account where you water. “For trees, the majority of the roots are located at the drip line rather than the base,” she adds. She suggests root feeders and watering spikes to help in this process.

A lot of people assume fall is the perfect time for fertilizing. Although Kate agrees with adding much-needed nutrients to your yard, she says to make sure not to fertilize after August. “If you fertilize at the wrong time, too much nitrogen can cause damage after the first frost.” Opt for fertilizers that contain low nitrogen and higher levels of phosphorus and potassium to promote root growth and not push green growth. “It’s important to get the nutrients to the roots when they are the most active.” Although aeration is a good process, Kate says to always take into account what you’re trying to accomplish when performing fall lawn maintenance. “Think about your activities,” she adds. “Basically, aeration is a method to relieve the compaction. If there isn’t much activity on your yard, there more than likely isn’t a need for aeration.” Again she references the tried and true tip of proper watering. “Water expands when it freezes and essentially serves as a natural way to reduce compaction.” (continued on page 80)

One last tip for the turf is overseeding. She says fall is a great time to plant grass, be sure to factor in timing and grass variety. “All types of grasses have different germination times. Be sure to overseed early enough to mow the new grass plants at least three times, or approximately eight weeks, before it freezes,” she says. If you do opt to aerate, overseeding can be especially beneficial since the plugs allow the seed to enter the holes and the thatch will disintegrate with natural rain, helping the seedlings.

For perennials and small bushes, identify your plant first before you start fall pruning. Some plants need to be cut back to prepare for winter while others may provide a nice ornamental element to the yard and provide food for birds. Just be on the lookout for rodents who seek shelter in winter landscapes and can kill plants. For trees, Kate says it’s more about sap flow than bloom time. “It’s advised to prune early spring blooming bushes after they bloom in the spring instead of waiting for fall. In fact, leaving roses until spring will create more blooms the following year because the plant will be larger to start the growing season.” Whether you’re a low-maintenance landscaper or have a green thumb, most landscapes need a little tender loving care before the harsh winter. “Being Mother Nature is hard,” Kate says. “So all these tips are simply to assist with the natural process so you can head into winter with your landscape in line for a healthy, colorful spring.”

Back to School... with Allergies Tips to Stay Safe When Heading Back to the Classroom By Jennifer Dumke

B

ackpacks, school supplies and new clothes are just a few of the life changes a family with young children undergoes when summer wraps and school begins. A new classroom also means a new teacher and possibly new triggers for allergies and asthma. These stubborn ailments account for more than 14 million days of missed school. How do you know if your child has allergies? Daniel Todd, MD FACS of Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat, has been treating children with allergies for many years and has extensive experience in dealing with the transition from summer vacation to school. “Oftentimes, the environmental change, such as a new classroom, can trigger allergies,” says Dr. Todd. Parents should be on the lookout for symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, nasal congestion and drainage. “Be more cautious if the child displays more serious symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath,” he adds.

days of missed school. If a parent suspects a child has allergies, it’s critical they get tested. “It is impossible to avoid or prepare for what you don’t know,” Dr. Todd says. “Getting allergy testing and examining lung function lets physicians know how to medicate, avoid (triggers) and prepare for school.” He adds, “Once we know that, it’s important to make a trip and visit the classroom to further identify the triggers.”

~ Dr. Todd MD FACS of Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat After identifying the allergy, a treatment plan can be enforced. These range from taking a simple medication, such as an antihistamine at home, to allergy shots administered in a clinic—neither of which has much affect on a child’s school day routine unless there’s a large exposure. For more serious cases, such as peanut and other life-threatening allergies, parents need to prepare their educators to make sure the child carries an injector. “Teachers and staff will need to be aware and familiarize themselves with using injectors,” Dr. Todd says. The child’s diet and the diets of those around them also will need to be adjusted. Other common allergies require the use of a rescue inhaler. “Physical education teachers may need special training on exactly what your child may require to participate fully,” Dr. Todd says. He adds that it’s important to not let certain allergies and asthma diminish performance. “Overall, back to school should be a fun and exciting time for all children, even those with allergies. Just make sure to prepare and communicate to make it a positive, and safe, experience for everyone.” sfw

Vitamins Minerals and More The Good and the Bad of Supplements By Ashley Bork, for Avera Health

W

hether it’s to boost nutrition, improve heart health, lose weight or just feel better, more people are turning to dietary supplements. “Just as with exercise, people add supplements to their daily regimen. They’re trying to improve their health today, and prevent things that could happen down the road,” says Karen Hoffman, PharmD of Avera Specialty Pharmacy. But with hundreds of choices, how can you know if a particular supplement is right for you? The best advice is to start with your doctor. “It’s always a good idea to talk about your supplements to your doctor every time you go in. It’s important for your care team to know everything you’re taking,” Karen says. Don’t assume that just because a supplement is available over the counter, it’s safe for you. It might interfere with other medications you are taking, or make an existing condition worse. Because the FDA does not regulate supplements like other drugs, some supplements you find on the store shelf might not work as well as the label says. “Research what you’re getting into and who’s making it,” she suggests. People with allergies should be cautious and read the ingredient label; some brands add extra fillers or substitutions. Karen recommends finding brands that are pure and hypoallergenic to avoid the risk of a reaction. There are times when the right amount of whole grains, fruits and vegetables don’t make it into the daily food lineup. Women, especially, require more vitamins and nutrients than the average diet allows. 86

“People are always asking for a magic pill for weight loss- you just have to eat right and exercise.” ~ Karen Hoffman, PharmD of Avera Specialty Pharmacy

Among popular supplements are calcium, magnesium, fish oil and multivitamins. While they shouldn’t be used as a substitute for a healthy diet, they can provide an extra boost for the body to utilize. Vitamin D, often obtained through sunlight, is also common to take in supplement form – especially in the long winter months when people don’t get as much sunlight, or in the summer when regularly applying sunscreen to prevent skin damage, Karen says. For those who want to prevent osteoporosis, calcium supplements have been proven beneficial for overall bone health. Fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, and helps lower triglycerides and blood pressure.

Show the World

From gummies to chewables, supplements can also be given to children. “Kids don’t always have the best diet,” she says. Getting kids to eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables can seem like an uphill battle for many parents. High-sugar snacks can cause inflammation. Fish oil supplements made for children can help reduce inflammation and have been known to help with attention deficit in school. Because children require a different daily amount of vitamins and minerals, parents should never give adult supplements to children. Karen recommends as with any other supplement, “Always ask a health care professional for advice before starting.” For women needing extra digestive help, probiotics might be something to consider. Probiotics are live bacteria that help keep a natural balance in the intestines as well as boost the immune system. “They can help a whole age range of people, from babies to the elderly,” Karen says. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t find them on the shelf in your local pharmacy. Probiotics need to be refrigerated, so they might not be stored next to other common supplements. Weight loss is another top reason why people turn to supplements. But beware of supplements with high or unrealistic claims. “People are always asking for a magic pill for weight loss,” she says. The truth is: there is no magic pill. Supplements can help with overall health, but not with shedding pounds. For that, Karen says, “you just have to eat right and exercise.” Again, if you have questions about supplements or before taking a supplement for the first time, ask your doctor. A pharmacist also can be a good source of information. If unsure about what medications and supplements will interact, a pharmacist can help – especially if you’re trying something for the first time. Taking those first proactive steps could make all the difference to leading a happier and healthier life for you sfw and your family.

Aquatic Therapy

Treatment Offers Gentle Alternative for Some Orthopedic Patients By Darcie Bontje

hile physical therapy is the prescribed course of treatment for many orthopedic injury sufferers, a land-based regimen is not suitable for some patients. Brad Pfeifle, vice president of Sports Medicine and Rehab Services at Orthopedic Institute, says that’s where OI’s new aquatic therapy program fits in. “This is a great adjunct to our current physical therapy services for patients who can’t tolerate ground-based rehabilitation services.” Through its partnership with GreatLife Malaska Fitness Club, Orthopedic Institute now offers aquatic therapy at GreatLife Woodlake Athletic Club, 4600 S. Tennis Lane in Sioux Falls. Aquatic therapy allows patients who are unable to fully weight bear to ambulate sooner because they are more buoyant, Brad says.

The treatment minimizes swelling, improves range of motion, gently builds strength and decreases the impact on joints. It can be used independently, where a patient is gradually transitioned to land-based therapy, or in combination with a ground-based program.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy: • Reduce pain • Minimize swelling • Improve range of motion • Gently build strength and muscle tone • Reduce fall risk • Improve circulation • Decrease impact on joints

Orthopedic Institute’s licensed physical therapists provide one-onone sessions for patients in Woodlake’s therapy pool, which ranges from 84-86 degrees Fahrenheit and features a wheelchair lift. The pool depth ranges from 3.5-6 feet.

The Woodlake facility also caters to privacy. “Patients can go from the locker room to the pool and back to the locker room without having to walk around the facility. This unique setup really takes away the intimidation factor,” he says. “We have been building this program for more than a year,” says Brad, who adds that standardized therapy protocols will be closely followed. “This is great for the community and something that people are really going to benefit from.” Insurance does provide reimbursement for aquatic therapy and OI accepts outside referrals, he says. “Whether someone is a surgical or nonsurgical patient, our ultimate goal at Orthopedic Institute is to get them back to an active, healthy lifestyle,” Brad says. “Water therapy is a great median for that.” For more information on aquatic sfw therapy, call 605-977-6845. Someone to Lean On Support System Helps Woman Enjoy Weight-loss Success By Sanford Health

F

or Julie Strei of Ortonville, Minn., life-changing weight loss started with her hip. “It was October 9, 2013,” she says, “and I went to see my doctor about a bad hip. He was honest with me. I was overweight and exposing myself to a lot of health risks. I knew it was time to do something, so he told me about the Profile by Sanford weightloss program. As soon as I was done with my appointment, I signed up.” Starting that day, Julie, 42, committed to the Profile program. Her plan included a personalized meal plan, smart technology to track her progress and unlimited coaching sessions either in-person or virtually. Gradually, Julie added low-impact exercise to her routine, swimming three to four times per week and exercising at home. She also kept a daily journal of her new journey and replaced soda with a gallon of water each day. And as the pounds started to disappear, so did her high blood pressure and need for medications.

A Changed Life

Two Julies~ On the left, Julie, before losing over 200 pounds! And on the right, Julie today.

“At my six-month checkup, my doctor was shocked,” Julie says. “I had lost 92 pounds by then. His reaction motivated me to keep losing.” Julie’s Profile coach helped her stay on track, offering cooking tips, identifying trigger foods and sharing ways to combat cravings. Julie says this education and support was the key to her success. “There were times I got frustrated,” she says, “But my husband and my Profile coach stuck by my side. That’s probably what was missing when I tried other diets before and failed. A support system is so important. If you can lean on your coach, family and friends, you’ll never be doing this alone.” After more than a year, Julie finally hit her weight-loss goal, dropping more than 200 pounds. “Most people I ran into didn’t even recognize me anymore. They were in total shock!” Julie says. Julie also had her hip replaced, which was the initial reason she saw her doctor and started the Profile program. “I’ve never felt so good in my life,” Julie says. “I’m walking and doing situps. I joined a fitness center again and am back into swimming. I run up and down the stairs with no shortness of breath, something I could never do before. I can actually do things now instead of sitting around and watching everyone else have fun.” Now that Julie has lost the weight, her next goal is to help others do the same. “At Profile, they share a saying: ‘Don’t stop trying even if you hit a wall, progress is progress no matter how small.’ I printed that out and hung it on my fridge, and it helped me whenever I hit a roadblock. For anyone who needs help, know that you can change your life just like I did.” To learn more about the Profile by Sanford weight-loss program, visit sfw www.profileplan.net.

Inspiring Others to Believe in Themselves By S.J. Menning

offers a bit of advice: “As a professional athlete, it’s pretty important to keep a small ‘inner circle’ of influence.” The pro golfer and native of South Dakota, who in 2014 debuted on the LPGA Tour at age 22, says her success is something many children dream of – being a professional athlete in their sport of choice. And yet, while the thought of someday being a professional golfer admittedly entered her mind, Kim grew up understanding the odds were not in her favor. “I started golfing when my dad took my sister and I out on the course with him,” Kim says. “I was 4 and she was 6.” The three were new to the sport together. Her parents, Terry and Teresa, had been farmers near Doland, South Dakota, when Terry purchased a machine shop in Clark and the family moved to town. “My dad was probably 30 and had never golfed before, but thought it might be fun,” Kim reminisces.

The following summer, Todd Kolb—then employed by the South Dakota Golf Association—hosted a clinic at the Clark Municipal Golf Course. Kim and her sister were eager to attend and were easily the youngest participants. Shortly thereafter, at the age of 6, Kim started taking lessons with Todd and never stopped. “Not many instructors want to take kids as young as 6,” Kim says. “But I guess Todd was up for the challenge.” Kim says she feels fortunate to have had Todd as her coach through the years and for the generosity of his family. Starting at age 14, Kim spent her summers living with Todd’s family in Sioux Falls in order to gain more experience at different courses. “I’ve been working with Todd for so long, he knows my swing and I know his coaching,” she says. “I can call him anytime I’m having trouble on tour, and he can talk me through what I’m doing wrong and give me exercises to practice on.” And as for that “inner circle” Kim advises of, hers consists of her parents and her coach. “They’ve been with me—literally— since day one and have done everything they could to help me get where I am today,” she explains. 98

While her mother has never played the game and her father hasn’t in nearly 15 years, Kim says they encouraged her and provided her with every opportunity to be as good a golfer as she wanted to be. “My parents are … just my parents,” Kim says. “They don’t try to coach me. They are just there for me.” Their loyalty is an attribute Kim appreciates more and more. “And Todd has taken me from an awkward, uncoordinated 6-year-old with zero natural talent to a member of the LPGA Tour.” While some may quibble with Kim’s claim of “zero natural talent,” she says there is no arguing that the combination of her supportive parents, Todd’s coaching, and his family’s willingness to take her in every summer contributed to her being on tour today.

After playing golf through high school, Kim attended Texas Tech on a golf scholarship and worked toward a political science degree with the intention of attending law school. “While I dreamed to play golf, it just never seemed like a reality,” she says. “Most don’t make it and it’s usually pretty expensive to even try.” However, by December of her senior year, Kim was ranked No. 1 in college golf, earning her a spot on the Symetra Tour, which is considered golf ’s “minor league.” “Normally, a golfer has to go through ‘Q-School,’” Kim explains of the traditional route to the LPGA. Q-School is the shortened term for the LPGA Qualifying School—a lengthy, three-stage process that determines whether a golfer gains their “card,” which allows them to golf on the pro circuit. And while there were a few bumps along the way, Kim’s spot on the Symetra Tour proved to be her fast-track into the LPGA.

Kim took a win at her third Symetra Tour event in 2013. The Top 10 season finishers on the Symetra Tour earn LPGA cards, and Kim’s win put her in the race. “I played the remaining seven events and finished 12th,” Kim explains, “about a thousand dollars short of earning a card.” Undeterred, Kim persevered. Finishing 12th allowed her to skip to the final stage of Q-School, where the Top 20 would receive their cards. “I finished 23rd,” Kim says. “Just missed it, but still earned partial status, meaning I would get to play on the LPGA Tour if some of the girls with full status chose not to play one week.” With the start of the 2014 season, Kim kept her focus on the Symetra Tour. She won the second event, putting her at the top of the money list and solidifying her goal of finishing within the Top 10 at the end of the season. When Kim’s agent called with an opportunity to play on the LPGA Tour in Hawaii, Kim was excited for her first LPGA experience. “I went and made the cut,” she says. “A couple weeks later I got the call to go to Dallas, but was hesitant to go.” Playing in Dallas would cause her to miss a Symetra

Contests & Give-Aways! event that same weekend, and potentially jeopardize her Top 10 placement. Kim went regardless of her hesitation. She finished fourth in the event, earning enough money to play full time, and gained her LPGA card. Kim officially switched from Symetra to LPGA less than half-way through the 2014 season. Her finish in 2014 earned her a spot on the full tour in 2015. While being on tour has awarded Kim many opportunities, she says playing the game that she loves isn’t always a “dream job.” “It’s tough to be on tour,” Kim explains. “It isn’t ‘normal life.’” Kim quotes the cliché “the grass is always greener on the other side” when explaining the stresses and difficulties of missing family, missing holidays, and missing the normalcy of everyday living. Kim decompresses through yoga and enjoys reading because she can “go to a world to forget about golf for a bit.” But weighing the pros with the cons, Kim feels fortunate to be with the LPGA. “We are a tight, friendly tour,” she says of all of the members with the LPGA. “We’re out for 25 weeks— most of us without our family or friends—so we make our own family out there.” Kim explains that while each golfer is very competitive, they celebrate each other’s wins and comfort each other through losses. “It’s like no other league out there.”

Kim finds motivation in seeing every day as a new day, and understands—more than most—that one good week can turn your career around. “What I did in Dallas last year proved that for me,” Kim says. “No matter how bad I may have played the week before, that next week might by my next Dallas,” Kim explains of her attitude of looking forward. “And at the end of the day, I still get to play a game that I love and make a living at it.” She says the biggest benefit of her tour status is the travel. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to see places I’d never be able to go to otherwise,” Kim says. In addition to the tournaments within the United States, the 2015 tour will travel to Australia, Thailand, Scotland, multiple points in Asia, and more. Kim cites Evian, France, as one of her favorites, with the picture-perfect cafés and the view of Switzerland right across the lake. “I feel very lucky,” Kim says. “It’s afforded me a pretty good quality of life.” Kim advises other young women with LPGA aspirations to have a plan and stick with it. “If you are doing things that are making you better,” she says, “don’t let other people persuade you to take a different path.” Kim points out how there will always people who tell you to practice different, think different, use different equipment, or find a different coach. “But you have to be strong enough to believe in what you’re doing and stick to it,” Kim adds. Kim intends to play with the LPGA Tour for another 10 to 15 years. At that point, she hopes her position in the LPGA will award her other journalism or broadcasting opportunities within the golf industry. While she is interested in future plans, Kim says, “Right now, I’m just focusing on building a good career and seeing the world.”

Sticks and Steel

A Treasure Trove of American Craft By S.J. Menning • Photos by Julie Prairie Photography

ocated in the historic 8th & Railroad Center, Sticks and Steel has made American craft accessible to the Sioux Falls community for nearly 14 years. Owner Terri Schuver had been traveling to craft fairs nationwide with Prairie Dance, her line of metal sculptures, meeting like-minded, talented artisans coast to coast. Inspired by their work and the American craft community, Terri developed Sticks and Steel to share their talents with her hometown. 104

“The satisfaction of operating a small craft gallery like Sticks and Steel extends well beyond its aesthetic impact,” Terri says. “The ripple effect of buying and selling within our small niche positively impacts the small business community nationwide as well as our local artist community.” “Everything we carry is American made,” says Melanie Cotton, marketing manager. “We carry works from local and regional artists as well as artists from across the US.” The gallery boutique carries items ranging from wall art and pottery to clothing and fine jewelry. sfw
