A Student Portfolio Design Show and Runway Event By Chellee Nemec Photography by Dan Eisenhauer - Good Life Photo Co.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2:00 PM Institute of Design and Technology of South Dakota’s Design Solution Center, 2701 S Minnesota Ave. Cost of entry is $20 per ticket and is open to the public but space is limited so purchase tickets in advance by contacting IDTSD at 605.275.9728 or online at www.idtsd.org
FORM + FASHION MEETS FUNCTION
E
very student dreams of the opportunity to see their designs grace the runway or displayed in a portfolio show of interested onlookers. A select group will do just that at the Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota’s (IDTSD) annual fundraising event Form + Fashion Meet Function. The looks featured will be a collaboration and inspiration of interior and fashion design using similar concepts, colors and textiles. This year’s feature will be Ralph Lauren textiles seen in the seating and apparel projects of full time design students. Founder of the Institute Anita Kealey reveals, “Not only will we be showcasing the portfolio of our fulltime students’ work, we will be including recent works from some of our most gifted Project Design Boot Camp students.” IDTSD will feature the work of 25 students ranging from 10 years old all the way to 35 years of age. Anita goes on to share, “Instead of bringing in a project runway designer like we have done in the
past, this year we are changing the focus to really highlight the exceptional and inspirational work of our local students.” Form + Fashion Meets Function will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the new IDTSD Design Solution Center at 2701 South Minnesota Ave. The doors will open at 1:15 pm for viewing of the students portfolios followed by an intimate runway show at 2:00 pm featuring integrated interior and fashion designs using Ralph Lauren textiles. In addition to the portfolio show and runway preview, participants can engage in a silent auction featuring desirable packages donated by local sponsors. Space is limited so those that desire a fashion experience from up and coming local designers should purchase their $20 ticket early. All proceeds from the event supports programming of summer design camps and scholarships for full time design students at the Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota. n

HORSE LOVERS PARADISE Turkey Creek Ranch Delivers an Exhilarating Adventure By Margaret Pennock | Photos courtesy of Turkey Creek Ranch
L
ess than two short hours from Sioux Falls, a lushly wooded horse lovers escape lies just south of the South Dakota border in the picturesque rolling hills of Newcastle, Nebraska. The private trail riding delight is Turkey Creek Ranch and has more than 16 miles of groomed trails and a beautiful, secluded, peaceful equine campground with picnic tables, a 20Ă—36 picnic shelter, shower house and electric hookups. In addition, campers can also choose to rent one of two gorgeous, fully furnished rustic post and beam cabins. The cabins, which can comfortably sleep up to six, provide all the creature comforts of home in addition to having horse pens located conveniently outside. But as relaxing and beautiful as the cabins and campground are, the trails are what keep riders coming back time and again. Over 16 miles of groomed and gorgeous trails weave through challenging hills and peaceful shaded ravines to afford you beautiful views of northeast Nebraska and the Missouri River. The trails meander through a level of skills and allow riders and horses plenty of room. Turkey Creek Ranch is owned and operated by John and Brenda Wortmann who have poured their hearts and souls into making the ranch a horse lovers dream destination. According to Brenda, “We promote a beautiful natural setting to camp and enjoy riding.
We’re more than just another place to ride. Besides our amazing trails, we offer an obstacle course to help you make your horse the best it can be. This is just one of the additions we’ve added to make Turkey Creek Ranch a favorite place for all those who visit! The perfect weekend get away, or simply a nice day ride, Turkey Creek Ranch offers some of the most beautiful horse trails available in the area.”

The Hoyt Family
PRESERVING YOUR RELATIONSHIP AND YOUR FOOD Couples Keeping The Art of Canning Alive By Chellee Nemec | Family photo by Maggie Sweets Photography
J
odi and Nathan Hoyt didn’t grow up in families that had gardens or preserved food by canning. Jodi grew up in a family that owned a restaurant and didn’t have time for canning, while husband Nathan’s family didn’t garden or can either. It was about 7-10 years into their 13 year marriage that Jodi and Nathan decided to make a lifestyle change to be more conscious of their environmental footprint. These changes included taking advantage of what the environment can provide for them, while doing their part in preserving it. Both worked for landscaping companies in college so they had a base knowledge of growing plants. Jodi shared, “We had always wanted to try gardening, so we started by doing some research and then learned by trial and error through the years.” It was Jodi’s husband that got them interested in canning. Jodi expressed, “Nathan’s really the chef in our house. He likes to be creative so he is the main chef and I am the sous chef helping more on the preparation side.” Jodi and Nathan are part of a growing trend of a new generation that is bringing back the art of canning to preserve whole foods rather than store bought goods that contain a lot of preservatives and additives. According to the United States Department
20
SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2017
of Agriculture, people are moving away from commercially canned fruits and vegetables, a steady decline since at least 1980. Americans are choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables overall and prefer them fresh. This has reignited the interest in preserving fresh foods that allows you the control over what goes into your food. “The reason why we like canning is not only the cost savings, but we can make things the way we like them through tweaking recipes, all while being proactive in our healthcare by being more conscious of what we put in our bodies and feed our son,” shared Jodi. Like many, Jodi and Nathan started canning for the health benefits, but also take pleasure in crafting the taste of their food and the experience of canning. Jodi and Nathan are huge fans of salsa so canning allows them to control the ingredients and customize based on their own flavor preferences. Jodi likes hers sweet and adds fruit to hers while Nathan likes a little spice. “Equally as important to the health benefits is the time we spend together,” noted Jodi. “It’s fun creating together, working together and pushing each other around in the kitchen, and there’s a lot of that goes on!” Jodi happily shares. Their almost
two-year-old son enjoys watching them in the kitchen. “We are showing our son what a healthy relationship looks like.” Jodi says, “He sees us communicating, showing affection, and working together.”
Marriage or Family Issues?
Stronghold Counseling
They also get a sense of pride in the products they produce together knowing that they are providing for themselves and the family they created. They also enjoy sharing their canned goods as gifts and trade with other couples. Jodi and Nathan draw pleasure from comparing their canning with others because if gives them inspiration in their own recipes. “We share a lot of pickles, but we are somewhat guarded with our salsa, because it’s one of the things we use the most,” laughs Jodi. After all, football season is upon us and what better way to enjoy time with family and friends than over homegrown and canned salsa. There are many local resources that you can connect with to join Jodi and Nathan in the movement to home grown whole foods and preserving through canning. You can take classes through SDSU Extension Office or by connecting with Project Food Forest. Not interested in growing your own food or don’t have the space? You can still preserve your relationship while preserving your food by shopping at local farmers markets or joining a local food co-op. Sourcing your fresh fruits and vegetables at a local farmers market is also a great way to spend time with one another. More often than not there are activities and live music to take in at the market. Sioux Falls is fortunate to have several farmers markets you can choose from such as Falls Park Farmers Market, Sioux Empire’s Farmers Market and Prairie Farmers Market. Co-op Natural Foods is also a great place to shop for locally grown produce.

NEW MOM
NEW BEAUTIFUL
A Guide to a Simple and Fresh Look after Baby By Chantelle Duncan Photos by Margaret Pennock
H
ave you recently become a new mother and find that is it impossible to keep up your prebaby beauty regimen? Babies can distract your attention away from dark circles under your eyes and neglected hair, but here are some amazing tips to help you feel pretty and put together with minimal time. Quick makeup that still looks great Before pregnancy you probably devoted a considerable amount of time for your makeup. Now that you are scrambling to find the time, here is a fierce look that takes just minutes. GLOWING SKIN Using tinted lotions or BB creams instead of heavy foundation allows forgiveness when it comes to missing spots and eliminates the blending time. BB creams spread easily, can build to a medium coverage and will have your skin looking amazing in about a minute. Next, hide dark circles by applying concealer. FRESH FACE Throw some color on to brighten your look. Dust on bronzer for a slight warm tone, brush your cheeks with a peach tone blush and a simple gloss. Voila, your fresh face is ready to go! TIMELESS HAIR Perfect hair is out the window with your sleepless nights. Now is the time to embrace your wavy, curly or straight hair. A side messy bun, simple braid, or hair down with a classic headband will turn your hair into a beautiful natural masterpiece. It’s a slow process to getting back to your beauty regimen and that’s ok! Take it easy and enjoy your baby. n

THE FLAVORS OF FALL Create Comforting and Colorful Combinations By Brianna Venekamp | Photos by Reistroffer Design
D
ynamic grenadine red will lead the color palette, creating warm and comforting combinations this fall, along with navy, silver and turquoise. Complementary shades include a soft pink (think ballet slipper), refreshing golden lime, butternut squash and burgundy. MULTICOLORED FUR, FLORALS AND FOLK Florals are darker in tone and color and more romantic this season. Bandana and paisley prints give off a happy bohemian vibe, while designers juxtapose unexpected pairings of materials and tones using multicolored fur and patchwork patterns. GLITTERY SILVER & GOLD Continuing the metallic trend, watch for slinky silver and gold creations to remind you of the high shine of the Space Age. Skirts, dresses, tops, pants appearing in silver, gold, copper and more. ACCENTS A flurry of feathers and fringe add accents to sleeves, collars, skirts, and even shoes.
POWERFUL PANTS SUITS Jackets with jeans or other power suit combinations of Palazzo pants, shirts, blazers, trenches in every possible shade make office wear your go to wear for the fall. Try wearing a dress, either long or short, with pants underneath, or wearing a long jacket as a dress, with a belt around your waist.

CARS & CAR SEATS
M
any new and would-be parents struggle to match their family vehicle with a car seat or seats. According to Sioux Falls firefighter Tim Schons, “It’s important to remember that the vehicle and the car seats you select must fit both children and parents.” A car seat instructor of the national Child Passenger Safety Certification program, Schons says, “The families we work with have different needs and resources. We advise them to carefully consider all of their needs and requirements to find the best vehicle and car seat match to best fit their situation.” This is especially important for families with multiple births or multiple children who must ride in a car seat. Schons reminds parents who are shopping for a new vehicle to alert the sales person to their specific needs and take an additional step in the buying process. “Dealerships are usually very accommodating and will allow you to bring your car seats into the prospective vehicle to ensure that you can achieve the best configuration for your needs.” Automotive dealerships Sioux Falls Ford and Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls offer a variety of solutions to meet the transportation needs of the younger family. These are a few of their most popular models: FORD EXPEDITION The Ford Expedition is an affordable way for a family to get from point A to point B. Keyless ignition, child seat anchors and an overhead storage console will make any parent smile. This SUV readily tackles tight maneuvers thanks to a backup camera and rear parking sensors. The Expedition’s impressive 108.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity makes it very attractive to the family who brings it all with them every time they leave the house.

Find the Perfect Combo for Your Family By Jill Funke
CADILLAC ESCALADE Features such as the Cadillac Escalade’s child seat anchors, hands free entry and power rear seat entry are priority features to parents of younger children. Traveling down the road is much more relaxing due to blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning. The 94.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity ensures that the Expedition will easily hold the strollers, diaper bags and everything else that accompanies a young family on the move. LINCOLN NAVIGATOR Due to its many attractive features for the family with smaller children, great value can be found in the purchase of a Lincoln Navigator. Child seat anchors are a must, while hands free entry and keyless ignition make life a little better for parents. Stability and traction control are reassuring, while the SUV’s post collision safety system offers even more peace of mind. The 103.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity make this vehicle a versatile option for the family with a variety of needs. MERCEDES BENZ GLE The Mercedes Benz GLE may be a dream come true for the parent on the go. Child seat anchors help keep the little ones safely secured, while hands free entry, remote keyless power door locks and keyless ignition bring a little ease to active moms & dads. Safety is top priority, as this SUV boasts stability and traction control, a pre-collision safety system, an accident avoidance system, and blind spot and lane departure warnings. The 80.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity means that the essentials will always accompany busy and growing families. n

4 FAVORITE TIME-SAVING KITCHEN TOOLS Story & photos by Ashley Sornsin
A
s Fall approaches, our schedules begin to fill up with many social events and activities that often translate to less time preparing healthy meals in the kitchen. Alright, so that’s the adult version of ‘the dog ate my homework’ excuse to pick up takeout. Fortunately, I’ve got some time-saving tools to help you get in and out of the kitchen in minimal time. My 4 favorite time-saving kitchen tools will also help you to make healthy meals, as eating well is one of the most important pieces to living a healthy and fit life. When you eat well, you feel well and that reflects into all aspects of life. I believe in living a healthy and fit lifestyle, encouraging others to do the same, so my goal is to help you find ways to live your best and healthiest life. Try using my 4 favorite time-saving kitchen tools to make healthy meals while working efficiently, giving you more time outside of the kitchen to live your best life.

My 4 favorite time-saving kitchen tools: CONTAINERS I know what you’re thinking, how does this save me time? I realize there is some prep time involved, however, as soon as I get home from the grocery store, I grab 5 containers of each size and fill them up. Get in the habit filling containers with the following: vegetables & hummus, fruit, nuts & seeds and overnight oats. These are just a few ideas for some easy, go-to snacks that will be ready for you to grab on the way out the door. By getting just a few things ready, you’ll have healthy snacks all week long. MUFFIN TIN One of the most overlooked and under-rated items in the kitchen, the muffin tin, is a huge time saver and one of my favorite meal-prep tools. Not only does it save you time, but it saves your waistline! Recipes are endless and whether you’re using a mini muffin tin or regular sized muffin tin, you’re creating bite sized and portion controlled items to last you (and your family) all week. Double your recipes and make some egg muffin cups for breakfast, baked oatmeal muffin cups for a snack, pita cups with hummus for lunch and turkey or black bean meatball ‘muffins’ for dinner. CROCK POT I like to think of the Crock Pot as my sous chef. There are a ton of recipes you’ll find that allow you to throw all the ingredients in and have a full meal ready when you come home from a busy day. Make a large batch of soup or chili to eat all week (think leftovers for lunches) or to serve your equally hungry and health conscious family. Another method that is a huge time saver is using the crockpot to cook several pounds of meat, like chicken. Place meat in the crockpot, cover with water or broth and set on high for approximately 4 hours (thawed) or 8 hours (frozen). Chicken should be thoroughly cooked and you can even shred it for a variety of recipes. You’ll have plenty of meat ready for meals for the entire week and extra to freeze for the next week. You may be surprised by how many different foods you can prepare using this one tool, even steel cut oats can be made in bulk with the crockpot! RICE STEAMER The name might deceive you because this kitchen tool can really do it all, not just steam rice. The rice steamer has been flying under the radar, but I’m about to expose it. Not only can you cook the perfect rice with the touch of a button, but simultaneously, you can cook an entire meal! Did I mention from start to finish, your whole meal can be ready in 30 minutes or less? Yes, it’s one of the quickest and healthiest methods, as you’re using steam to cook your food. To cook an entire meal, you’ll use the basket that comes with it, where you’ll place a thawed fish filet (for example) as well as some green beans while your rice (along with water) cook below and in 30 minutes, you’ve got a whole meal ready to serve. It goes beyond rice and beyond steaming. Use the manual that comes with it to find out all the innovative ways to use it. This will be one of your favorite and most used items in the kitchen. n

HOME COOKING:
FARMERS’ FAVORITE RECIPES
N
othing beats a delicious, home-cooked meal, especially when it’s fresh off the farm. Here are some recipes straight from the kitchens of South Dakota farmers that are sure to be family favorites in your home. Find these and more at HungryForTruthSD.com.
John’s Banana Bread Vonda’s Raspberry Jam Vonda Shulte is a farmer, gardener and the head cook at Dakota Christian School in Corsica. She loves helping kids learn where their food comes from and creating tasty meals using gardenfresh ingredients. Servings: approx. 7 jars (size 4 or 8 oz) INGREDIENTS • 4 cups raspberries washed, sorted and crushed • 6 1/2 cups sugar • 1 container pectin • 1/2 teaspoon butter • sanitized jars INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mix together raspberries and sugar in a heavy pan and bring to a boil. Keep stirring while boiling. 2. Add a container of pectin and boil for 1 minute. To avoid foaming, add butter. 3. Pour into hot, sanitized jars. Wipe the tops carefully, put on lids and seal tightly. 4. Put jars in a water bath for 10 minutes.
For John Krutzfeldt of Wolsey, farming is a family affair. He grows corn, soybeans and alfalfa with his father using sustainable practices so he can pass the farm to his children someday, just like this recipe that originated in his wife’s grandmother’s kitchen. Servings: approx. 2 slices per person INGREDIENTS • 2 cups flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 3-4 mashed, ripe bananas • 1 cup ground nuts (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350° F. 2. Stir together flour, soda and salt. Set aside. 3. Cream butter. 4. Cream butter and sugar together. 5. Add eggs and vanilla. Stir until mixed. 6. Combine dry ingredients, butter, sugar eggs and vanilla. 7. Stir in mashed bananas and nuts, if desired. 8. Bake at 350° in an 8-inch square pan or two loaf pans for 55-60 minutes.
Peggy’s Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Asparagus
Paul’s Grilled Walleye
Peggy Greenway raises hogs, beef cattle, corn and soybeans near Mitchell. She uses temperature controlled barns, cameras and personal visits to make sure the animals are healthy and safe. The bacon just tastes better that way. Servings: 4 INGREDIENTS • 1 pound package bacon • 1 pound fresh asparagus • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Paul Casper is an avid outdoorsman and farmer from Lake Preston who grows corn and soybeans. He uses technology to carefully apply just the right amount of pesticides to his fields to protect crops and keep nearby lakes and rivers clean. That’s important when fresh fish is on the menu. Servings: 4 INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons soybean or vegetable oil • 1/2 tablespoon butter, melted • 4 walleye fillets* • lemon pepper, to taste • garlic salt, to taste • almonds or pecans, to taste • cayenne pepper (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Remove bottom 1-2 inches of asparagus stalks. 2. Wrap 1 piece of bacon around 2-3 stems of asparagus; secure with toothpick (soak in water to prevent burning). 3. Baste bacon with barbecue sauce. 4. Lay bundles in single layer in grill basket and grill for approximately 20 minutes, turning bundles halfway through cooking time.
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Spread soybean oil on an aluminum pan, coating the bottom. 2. Brush butter on your walleye. 3. Lightly sprinkle lemon pepper and garlic salt on top. Don’t get too wild. Want to give it a kick? Add cayenne pepper. 4. Add smoke pellets to grill. Heat grill to 400° F. 5. Add sliced almonds to the top of the fish. If you’re using pecan smoke pellets, add pecan slices. 6. Grill for 15 minutes on one side. *Note: Paul says the recipe works great for other seafood as well. Try it on lobster tails.

COOKING UP FOOD CONVERSATIONS IN THE CAFETERIA Vonda Schulte is the head cook at Dakota Christian School in Corsica, South Dakota. During the school year, she cooks lunch from scratch for 90 students every weekday. She loves connecting with the kids, talking to them about new foods and healthy eating. Vonda also happens to be a farmer. She says these two parts of her life overlap more than you might think. Vonda and her husband, Ken, have grown soybeans, corn and wheat for more than 30 years in Geddes. She also is an avid gardener with an impressive variety in her plot. Growing the food that ends up on her students’ lunch trays helps her connect their lunch to the farms and gardens where the food was grown and raised. “I grow everything from Brussels sprouts to raspberries,” said Vonda. “I like exposing the kids to new things. We always have a little trivia. I will bring in something from my garden, like Swiss chard, and quiz them to see if they know what it is. It’s fun to have conversations with them. It helps them to get to know me and a little more about their food.” Those conversations teach the kids that their food doesn’t just come from the grocery shelves.
“I want to be there for my fellow South Dakotans who have questions about how food is raised.” “I think it’s very important for South Dakotans to connect with their food,” she said. “I make that connection every day at home and at work. I want to be there for my fellow South Dakotans who have questions about how food is raised.” Because everything is cooked from scratch daily, the lunch menu at Dakota Christian changes with the season.

“My goal is to try to incorporate as many fresh ingredients as I can and cook foods in a way that kids like. I try to tie in what’s in season and fresh,” said Vonda. “I was able to get most of them to say they loved broccoli at least once. It was one of my greatest accomplishments.”

rom lime green accents to bright teal wallpaper, the Ulmers’ sprawling ranch style home takes a front seat when it comes to making a statement. Honing in on their love for traditional design meets modern glamour, this nearly 5,000 square-foot home is finished off to perfection with pops of lime green accents, bright teal wallpaper and creamy mustard toned paint. Defined as transitional design, this home is haven for luxury living for homeowners Candace and John Ulmer. Built in 2015 by Chuck and Megan Wiseman of Complete Contracting, the Ulmers knew they wanted to construct a custom home unlike any other. Candace, with a knack for design, thoroughly delved into the project and worked closely with the Wisemans for the perfect layout, building materials and overall construction concepts. But it’s the unique details and bright hues that take this home to the next level. Greeted by a bright and open entry, the large transom window and imported chandelier from Israel allow natural sunlight to provide striking contrasts with the dark, rich wood and crisp neutral walls. The use of sleek features and bright tones is established immediately with the teal sideboard accent table and colorful area rug. Leading into the great room, hues take a darker turn with an accent wall covered in glistening dark grey mica wallpaper that is flanked by a metalwrapped column by Viking Sheet Metal. To add function to the space, a flat screen television is cantilevered off the wall with a piece of drystacked slate stone backlit with color-changing LED lights. With just a push of a button, the lights cast various colors against the sparkling mica wallpaper

creating a dramatic effect. Ceiling high windows and sheer treatments allow natural sunlight to fill the room. Contemporary style upholstery and furnishings from Montgomery’s Furniture provide the perfect backdrop for bright lime and teal accents while a soft, creamy carpet continues to add comfort to this family friendly space. A natural space for hosting large family gatherings, the spacious great room leads to an equally bright custom designed kitchen. Crisp white painted cabinets from Sioux Falls Kitchen & Bath maintain the neutral background concept while bold statement pieces such as teal barstools and dangling glass pendant lights take center stage. Uniquely laid out to create a “station” concept, this kitchen allows for easy baking, serving and even storage with a cabinet faced, walk-in pantry custom tailored to meet the family’s needs. The creamy granite countertop on the island is swirled with streaks of dark grey and black to complement the black built-in sink from Frisbees Inc. and rich, maple floors from Thornton Flooring. To add depth and visual interest, the outlying countertops are topped off with a steely matte quartz while a glistening glass tile backsplash from Syverson Tile & Stone provides a touch of elegance. In keeping with function and form, an induction cooktop is finished off with a stainless steel range hood and coordinating appliances from Mahlander’s Appliance & Lighting. “We really love how the kitchen is both useful and stylish.” adds Candace. “We worked really closely with our builder and a talented team of designers and subcontractors to achieve the exact look we were trying to achieve.” But Candace herself invested a lot of time researching various products and determining what would best work in their dream home. “It’s my passion and I feel this home really reflects our personal style.” With the assistance of interior designer, Julie Grossman and Megan Wiseman, the group worked through each space to fully achieve the desired look. Using bright, basic tones for the colorful area rug in the formal dining room makes changing out decorations to fit the seasons simple and easy. Anchoring the oversized distressed gray wood table, this rich brown circular rug enhances the maple floors and bright teal high back upholstered chairs. Nestled in a large bow window, natural sunlight flows in and is left uncovered to allow optimal illumination. For a touch of softness, stationary side panels on rods connect the triple windows yet remain subtle with a color that melts into the neutral walls. A statement spider styled pendant light fixture makes a clear, contemporary statement with round glass globes and black iron arms. For added convenience, a patio door leads to a covered upper patio. Soft upholstered dark wicker furniture welcomes outdoor relaxation as the space overlooks a sprawling backyard that flows into the dense foliage of a Kitchen

Back inside, a main floor powder bath extends the use of granite and wood materials but adds a reflective touch with a hammered drop in circular stainless steel sink with black goose-neck faucet. A simple, frameless mirror finishes off the custom floating cabinet with colored LED back lights. Perfect for long-term overnight guests such as the Ulmers’ parents, a conveniently located main floor guest bedroom is fully accessible and takes on a soft, shabby chic décor with a floral upholstered chair and creamy white bedspread. Even though this family is anything but all work and no play, their home offices both reflect perfect style. Painted white cabinets and dark countertops take cues from the adjacent kitchen. The master bedroom is not only a place for rest but also leisurely reading and relaxing with a dual-sided fireplace from Midwest Fireplace that separates the space to accommodate a small library. “We purposely didn’t want our master bedroom to be too large and instead opted for this extra room, our library, that we just love. Our schedules often don’t match up, so this is the place where we can sit together to catch up, relax by the fireplace and either watch television or read,” adds Candace. Oversized gray jumble tile line the floors and anchor the dark custom wood cabinets and grey quartz countertops. The large L-shaped configuration includes three frameless mirrors. The large air tub rests against a tile back wall and is kept bright yet private with a transom window. A walk-in shower is complete with complementing tile and mosaic accents while an oval teal ottoman provides additional seating and can be conveniently moved to various places in the space. Just off the master bath is a fully personalized walk-in closet. Walking down the stairs to the lower level is yet another unique design experience with a round crystal contemporary pendant chandelier and custom iron railing from Quality Welding and Manufacturing. The customized railing with spindles in groups of three adds another unique element. The lower level is fully finished off with exquisite attention to detail and a myriad of building materials to add texture and depth. A full kitchen/bar area takes a traditional turn with classic maple cabinets and monochromatic grey tile faced with various textures. Industrial style charcoal iron barstools belly up to the dual-tiered black granite bar. Elongated tan light fixutres hang above and add sparkle to the glass backsplash with mirrored tile to reflect the various forms of light for a dramatic affect. Sliding doors lead to a patio that includes a soothing and modern water feature by Northern Plains Landscaping. The lower level great room is simple and spacious with creamy upholstery and leather pub chairs. A flat screen television is mounted to a faux finished matte grey leather accent wall that extends to a corner metal-wrapped fireplace. Working closely with the design team, Candace chose to place her craft room just off the family area for optimal interaction. But when serious crafting is needed, a barn-style sliding door also wrapped in metal adds privacy with a touch of contemporary flair. “This was a suggestion that I just loved. We needed a focal point in this area and using this metal for a sliding door was perfect, adds Candace. Completing the lower level are an exercise room and two distinctive spare bedrooms with full baths, perfect for overnight guests. Whether looking to make a design statement or simply have a place to call home, this one-of-a-kind dwelling is a true reflection of personal style meets modern needs creating a bold space that speaks for itself. n

DIY CANOPY BED Story & photos by Emily Olson
A
canopy can give a dramatic note of sophistication to your bedroom. This elegant upgrade can be done inexpensively using basic items from the plumbing and electrical departments of the hardware store. These instructions are for a 3-sided canopy. This bed has a headboard attached to the wall, which does not allow curtains on all sides, but you can easily increase your materials creating curtains on all four sides.
64
SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2017
SUPPLIES: • 1/2” PVC Pipe or Metal Conduit • 2 90-Degree Elbow PVC • 3/8” x 4” Bolt Eye Lag • 3/8” Lag Shield (if needed) • 1” Clip Rings • 6 Curtains to desired length • Metallic spray paint in desired tone
1. Determine position and size. The canopy will be the most secure if the bolt eye lags can attach to ceiling joists. Adjust the bed accordingly if possible. 2. Create your measurements for the canopy by establishing where the curtains should fall along the edges of the bed. Measuring the mattress itself may not be useful as you need to account for the comforter and possibly headboard and/or footboard. Make marks on the ceiling indicating where the canopy rails will be mounted. Again, positioning the bolt eye lags at ceiling joist where possible is ideal. 3. Metal conduit or PVC can be used for this project with PVC being the least expensive option. The pictured canopy used metal conduit in order to create more authentic curtain rods and it is only a few dollars more. Cut the pipes to the measured dimensions size using a hacksaw. Take into account that approximately ½” of the pipe will be inserted into the PVC 90-degree elbow. 4. Spray paint all of the exposed canopy support pieces, including the pipes, PVC elbows, and bolt eye lags. Allow to dry and spray a second coat. 5. Mount the bolt eye lags by pre-drilling into ceiling joists where possible and be sure to attach lag shields into the ceiling where it does not line up with a ceiling joist. The lag shield will open slightly when a bolt eye lag is inserted, creating a secure fit without a ceiling joist. 6. Begin inserting the pipes in the bolt lag eyes and add clip rings before adding PVC elbows. Depending on the placement of your bolt eye lags, you may need to stager clip rings on either side to avoid large gaps in the curtains. Complete the canopy by hanging desired sheers or curtains. n

DESIGN AND FABRICATION By Stacey Kracht, inSKribe LLC
Keith Morgan, owner of Bespoke, says kitchen projects are always popular for him. They are one area in a home that a lot of people will spend more time – and therefore more money creating that space – than any other aspect of their home. The key feature of this kitchen project is the contrast of mixing materials, where both white enamel and natural wood materials are utilized. This creates both a textural and a visual contrast, injecting color as the room’s “main event.” The cabinetry on the island includes enamel uppers, so it’s not too woody nor too enamel – rather, it’s a bit of a hybrid. The island is two-tiered, with a lower level and chair on one end, meant for the sitting to peruse cookbooks and plan meals. The upper cabinets are made of enameled maple, and the interiors are figured maple and birds-eye maple. The shelves in the uppers have walnut piping on the edges for an additional contrasting detail. The enamel cabinets were enhanced with configuring to add detail in the inner cabinet walls. Keith explains, “When you have a species [with] abnormal growth in the tree…it’s called ‘configuring’ and [gives a] much nicer, more three-dimension look.” His team only uses the top 2%
of logs – only the most exotic species and the best cuts of materials, which contain this figuring detail in the wood. The lower cabinets consist of walnut and ebony, with a pin striping detail. The ebony macassar and quartered, figured walnut give a rich, fluent look to the lower-level cabinetry. All the interior fittings of the shelving and drawers contain Bespoke signature quality features, such as extra thick shelving, beautiful maple boxing, traditional hinges, inset doors, interior fittings, and heavy cuts. The pull-out drawers offer special features and are positioned for ease of use. One serves as a bread bin, one is a silverware organizer, and another a spice holder with canisters supplied and filled by Bespoke. A a 5-foot-wide, deeply inset lower drawer can store six full-sized pans. The sauce pan drawers are located under the cooktop, and the spice drawer is directly next to the stovetop for easy access while cooking. The kitchen also includes a built-in message center and separate butler/pantry area at the very end of the room tucked under an arch. This is a designated staging area, keeping food prep hidden from guests. The opposite end of the room offers a sitting area with TV and bookcases. The flooring is random width, wide plank, quartered white oak. Another unique feature is the refrigerator, which rests between two bookshelves on either side. This is a semi-integrated fridge, rather than a simple slide-in, which means it is somewhat disguised. With bookcases on either side and a panel on the front, it is hardly recognized as a fridge. It is positioned flush with the shelves surrounding it. By mixing in wood tones with enamel features, the room was made into a standout home feature to be remembered as not “just another” kitchen.

A THREAT TO YOUNG FEMALE ATHLETES Female Athlete Triad By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health
T
oo much intense exercise, hectic schedules and too few calories can put teen girls and young women at risk for what’s known as female athlete triad.
While well-known to physicians, especially those in orthopedic and sports medicine, as well as doctors with teen patients, it’s mostly unrecognized outside of those circles. The triad includes under-eating, interruptions in menstruation and losses of bone density. Jesse Barondeau, MD, Avera Medical Group Pediatrics Mitchell, specializes in health care for adolescents, and he said sometimes parents and even some coaches may not know of it.

earlier onset osteoporosis or other bone-density problems. Barondeau said in some cases, the female athlete is in fact starving her body of nutrients, and the body compensates by slowing menstruation and draining calcium from bones to help the heart do its work. “It does have lasting impacts and it can lead to a greater risk for stress fractures, which are not only painful but can lead to a season- or career-ending injury,” said Barondeau. “Rest and recovery, and a careful consideration of caloric intake, are steps that can help girls and young women.” Samuel Schimelpfenig, MD, Avera Medical Group McGreevy 7th Avenue, a sports medicine and pediatric specialist, said compromised nutrition can cause additional problems.
“Very competitive athletes may not be eating enough calories to keep up with their hectic schedules, between practices and games. That’s when we see this issue,” he said. “Symptoms include changes to the menstrual cycle, and it can cause short-term injuries as well as bone development issues.”
“Without the nutrients necessary, the body cannot do its normal maintenance and repair functions during rest. That’s another aspect of this condition,” he said. “Aggressive athletes need enough rest between games or seasons. Early specialization in one sport, no matter what it is, can be a contributing factor.”
Those problems can include poor bone health, leading to
Schimelpfenig said it can happen to girls in any sport.

“I’d encourage all parents to avoid early specialization into a sport,” he said. “Children and adolescents need plenty of calories and nutrition and plenty of rest. A full day off each week, and a period where intense training isn’t the daily routine will help.” Both physicians agree that the problem is one where your body craves energy but it’s not getting enough. “It can be challenging, but appropriate nutrition can really help, and that could be through supplements with iron, or it could include nutritionist support as well,” Barondeau said. “Athletes plan their workouts and they need to plan their meals as well, so it all comes together to keep them full of energy and less apt to suffer from the triad or injuries that come with it.” n

HEARING AID ADVANCEMENTS New Technology for Hearing Loss Sufferers By Jennifer Dumke
J
ust like any other organ of your body, it is important to know what is going with your hearing, whether it is normal or not. Because ears are located near the brain, ear problems are often are one of the first signs of something serious, making hearing an important part of overall health. Thanks to advanced technology and trained hearing specialists, remedies for hearing loss are now comfortable, affordable and even convenient. The most common fix for hearing loss is a hearing aid. But unlike the products of the past, these new devices have come a long way. Clinical Audiologist at Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat, Melissa Baker, M.A., CCC-A, FAAA, has been fitting hearing aids for decades and has seen first-hand the remarkable advances. “Today’s hearing aids have the capability to connect to mobile devices and patients are loving this new technology,” says Baker. “This Bluetooth feature of the hearing aid can stream anything through the hearing aids, such as cell phone conversations, music or podcasts and even television audio.” Another key feature is comfort. Baker says patients find modern day hearing aids easy

to wear because of their adaptability to various environments, such as water. “Some hearing aids feature a new Nanocoating that is water resistant, not water proof. But most of the time hearing aids can withstand water,” adds Baker.
New patients are always welcome!

But how about the effectiveness of hearing aids? Well, Baker weighs in that along with comfort and convenience, elimination of background noise has significantly improved hearing clarity. But most important, patients who have worn hearing aids for a period often discover an improved quality of life. “People hear with their brain, not with their ears,” says Baker. “Patients find relief from hearing aids because they realize after a long period of time of hearing aid use that the brain is less exhausted from trying to hear all day, so there is an ease in listening and mental stamina.” In the end, most find that life with a hearing aid is very much improved because they can maintain independence, feel actively engaged and confident to enjoy the flow of conversations and be aware of their surroundings. n

THE RIGHT MEDICATION FOR YOU How Pharmacogenetics Improves Treatment Results Story by Sanford Health
F
inding the correct medication for your body is extremely complicated. Many variables affect each person’s response to medication, and Sanford Imagenetics offers pharmacogenetics — the study of how heredity (genetics and identity) influences your drug response — to help find the best medication for you.
person’s genetic makeup. We all process medications differently based on our genes; some process quicker, some slower. Pharmacogenetic testing allows us to look at how your genetic makeup affects your ability to metabolize medication, and a treatment plan can be created around this information.”
“Precision medicine, often known as personalized medicine, is an approach to disease management which takes into account individual variability in environment, lifestyle and genes,” says Cassie Hajek, MD, internist-geneticist physician at Sanford Imagenetics. “Every path of drug metabolism is affected by a
A fast, simple blood test can provide guidance to Sanford Imagenetics physicians using your genetic information to define the best therapy and correct dosage for your body and illness. There are several genes which affect the metabolism of many different medications. Testing can be completed for one gene or a panel
of genes, and the results of the testing can be used to determine the most effective medication or dose of medication for an individual. Hajek explains, “Due to genetic variability, some people do not respond well to certain medications. For example, some patients do not effectively respond to Plavix, a medication for patients with a stent in the heart used to reduce blood clots. Now, we can offer pharmacogenetic testing for the gene that dictates metabolism of Plavix and know before we prescribe the medication how the patient will respond. If the blood test shows the person doesn’t respond to the medication, we can prescribe a different medication their body would respond to.” Pharmacogenetic testing can be helpful for many other medications. Sanford Imagenetics offers pharmacogenetic testing for eight genes, which covers over 65 major drug-gene interactions. And the results are available in a patient’s medical record. Anytime a Sanford physician sees a patient who has completed a pharmacogenetic test and prescribes a medication that is affected by their genes, a real-time alert is sent to the diagnosing physician for any non-compatible medication. The electronic medical record will help the physician change the dose or find an alternative medicine. Hajek says, “Using pharmacogenetics, Sanford Imagenetics has made a commitment to minimize adverse drug reactions and appropriately dose medications for patients. The most effective use of pharmacogenetic testing is before you need it. That way, a patient’s genetic information can be used at the time the affected medication is order. Having the test results available before the medication is ordered prevents the need to try different medication or different doses of medication while waiting for your genetic testing results.” “Pharmacogenetic testing can save patients from experiencing adverse drug reactions. It can be powerful,” says Hajek. “Pharmacogenetics is more precise and helps to eliminate trial-and-error to get patients the right medication at the right dose sooner.” Learn more at imagenetics.sanfordhealth.org. n

HOMECOMING: ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON RETURNS TO ROOTS By Natalie Slieter | Photo courtesy of Orthopedic Institute
D
r. Matt Wingate says returning to South Dakota is a no-brainer. His family still lives in his hometown of Brandon. He has a young family of his own and appreciates the excellent school system. He likes the people, the strong economy, and the booming medical field. He will pack up his things in Phoenix, AZ and move back to this area to start at the Orthopedic Institute the beginning of September. Not only will he be gaining perks by moving here, but also South Dakota will be gaining an orthopedic surgeon who will bring a unique skill set in spine surgery. Dr. Wingate completed his undergraduate degree at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He went to CSU because of his interest in veterinary studies at the time, but his interest quickly shifted to human
76
SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2017
medicine and studying exercise science. He became fascinated with how the human body works, specifically how muscles, bones and joints work to help us function on a day-to-day basis. This led to medical school at the University of South Dakota, a grueling general surgery internship, an orthopedic surgery residency in West Virginia and a fellowship specializing in spine surgery in his current home of Phoenix. He chose orthopedic surgery because it allows him to help get patients back on their feet while using his hands and technology to fix problems. “Orthopedic surgery is all about restoring function,” Dr. Wingate says. “As an orthopedic surgeon it is very rewarding to see the immediate results of your work as you help a patient regain or improve their function.” The orthopedic surgeries in which Dr. Wingate
specializes, such as surgery for artificial disc replacement and spinal deformity including the thoracic spine, aren’t commonly used in Sioux Falls. Artificial disc replacement is a surgical procedure to correct an improperly functioning or herniated disc in the cervical and lumbar spine. Disc replacements are most common in the neck, or cervical spine, and have been found to be very successful, Dr. Wingate says. The artificial disc allows the neck to retain motion and normal movement. Fusion procedures in the neck are also an option, but this reduces mobility and increases the chance of arthritis and additional surgeries in the future. Spinal deformity surgery primarily helps patients with spinal deformity or scoliosis. The surgery corrects the abnormal curvature of the spine so patients are able to stand straight, while improving back pain and eliminating pressure on the spine musculature. Surgical procedures of the thoracic spine are generally for spine curvatures, fractures, disc herniations, infections and tumors. In trauma, decompression and fusion are done to help facilitate recovery of the spinal cord and to stabilize the spine, Dr. Wingate says. Artificial disc replacements have been available for the past 10-15 years. Many insurance companies are now paying for this surgery since the treatment has been researched and is now widely understood and used. “What I pride myself on is having the training and experience to provide patients in Sioux Falls and the region comprehensive spine care. This means bringing new and state-of-the-arttechniques as well as tried and true surgical treatments to South Dakota while treating all spine maladies,” Dr. Wingate says. “I am truly passionate about helping patients regain function to live happier and more fulfilling lives.” To learn more about Dr. Wingate or to schedule an appointment, visit the OI website www.orthopedicinstitutesf.com or call 605-331-5890. n

or sisters Sarah Roe and Erin Vande Lune, having the ability to impact women’s health and wellbeing as well as their babies and their families is a calling that has become their passion. Both work as Certified Nurse Midwives at the same Sanford clinic in Sioux Falls providing well woman care across the lifespan, meaning they see adolescents through menopause. In addition, they provide pregnancy care to women who are interested in low-intervention and personalized care as well as labor support to help women through the labor experience and delivering babies including water birthing. A women’s health specialty that is becoming more popular in Sioux Falls, patients who don’t have preexisting medical conditions often choose a midwife to experience a more personalized and natural approach to women’s healthcare. For Erin and Sarah, this role fits their personalities and outlook on life perfectly. Both wives and mothers of seven children collectively, Erin has four and Sarah has three, the desire to help other women in a healthy and happy parenting journey is a natural and easy fit for them. According to Sarah, “Midwifery is a safe and satisfying option for pregnancy. We offer all of the standard testing and follow the ACNM and ACOG guidelines for care. We feel our approach is more personalized and we focus on low intervention and supporting the woman and her family every step of the way. By choosing a midwife you are choosing a provider that will partner with you and be a guardian of natural birth.”

We love walking beside women in all stages of life and forming relationships with them along the way.”

Growing up in Lennox, South Dakota to parents Jeff and Sally Goeman who own and operate Goeman Auction Service, Erin and Sarah along with their younger sister Megan are selfadmittedly ‘complete opposites’ but extremely close in spite of it. Erin shares, “We all have pretty strong personalities and different strengths and weaknesses; however, we couldn’t be our whole selves without each other. We are raw and real; not afraid to be truthful with each other and push each other to be our best selves. We have truly seen each other through some dark places, and laughed until we have cried. The relationship we share as sisters will last a lifetime.” Raised in a very Christian family, helping others in many ways has always been paramount for the sisters through missionary work which started as early as high school where Erin then met her future husband on a trip to West Virginia. Over the years, it has included many trips and even years of missionary work in foreign countries including Haiti, South Africa, and Ethiopia. Always knowing she was interested in a healthcare career, Erin set her sites on a pre-med course while Sarah chose to pursue journalism. According to Sarah, “I graduated with a journalism degree but it just wasn’t for me, so I worked for an airline providing customer service in Sioux Falls. It was fun at the time and my husband Jeremy and I literally vacationed for a year. But I was really praying about my next step and I decided to go back to nursing school. It was super intense but so worth it.” Erin had also deviated from her initial course after having to undergo back surgery early in her college career which set her in another direction. It ultimately led her to earn a degree in molecular biology and then her nursing degree. “My husband Rob was offered a youth ministry position in Long Beach, California so we took the opportunity and moved to Long Beach. Within the year, I had started back to school to finish my pre-med degree. I had to take some time off of school to be on bedrest with my first pregnancy, so it came as a great surprise to discover
that only seven short months later, while trying to finish my final year, I was pregnant with my second daughter. I was even more surprised to discover my due date was the same date I was supposed to take my MCAT. Rob left the church when a church from Orange City, Iowa called him so we moved back home and he took a position there. I taught anatomy and biology classes at Dordt College in Sioux Center but I really wanted to work as a nurse so I went back to school and graduated with an RN associates degree.” With yet more changes on the horizon for both women, Sarah went to work as an RN in critical care for a year and then transferred to labor and delivery. Erin and her husband Rob unexpectedly decided to respond to God’s call, choosing to move their family to Haiti to work for Children of the Promise. “It was a difficult decision to leave our families and bring our children to Haiti but it was something we felt God was calling us to do. I was the RN manager at the orphanage and Rob was all things human resources.” While Erin was on a break visiting family back home, Sarah shared her interest in pursuing her midwife degree with Erin. “We had both used midwives for our pregnancies so that we could have a more natural experience. When I told Erin I was interested in becoming a midwife, she said we should do it together.” Half a world apart, they dug in once more and completed their degrees online. Erin shares, “The school we attended, Frontier Nursing University, is the oldest school in the nation for midwifery and it’s provided completely online. We FaceTimed each other and studied online together which was sometimes challenging with getting reliable connections. But we got through the program in less than two years because we worked really hard.” Today, both sisters are overjoyed to be working together in the same clinic and hospital working with patients and families they care so deeply about. Erin shares, “Never in a million years did we think we would have the opportunity to

“We’re best friends. If I had to choose someone to hang out with it would be my sister. When we were going to school we had to deliver 50 babies so we would take turns watching each others kids, seven collectively! Our husbands are just as committed to the family as we are, it’s not just a sister thing, it’s a family thing. Our husbands go golfing together and hang out. I think our differences make us work well.” –Sarah Roe
work together, serving women side-by-side. But low and behold Sanford had two openings and hired us both to come aboard after graduation. It was divine intervention in our minds and now, after a year and a half of practice, we couldn’t imagine doing this job without each other. We support each other and lift each other up. This job is not always easy, in pregnancy we either meet women on the best or worst day of their lives. When our patients are hurting, we are hurting. We cry with them and mourn their loss and it helps to have your sister there for support and to pray through the heartache as well as share the joy.” Because serving others is exceptionally important for the sisters, the desire to continue their service through missionary work overseas as well as with care and inspiration in their own community is constantly refocusing. Sarah notes, “We’re starting a mother/ daughter middle school event this fall to talk about girl stuff. The goal is to facilitate the relationship between them to open lines of communication and to help them talk with one another throughout high school. We do feel passionate about the area and we do feel called to serve this space and want to be a part and a voice in our community in order to grow a positive environment.” n Sisters - Megan, Sarah and Erin Sarah is wearing a Three Dots Dolman Easy Dress ($144) from JuLiana’s Boutique La Femme Photos by Reistroffer Design

uring hunting season any open field might be covered in orange-vested pheasant hunters, but how many of them are women?
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, women hunters are on the rise in the United States, growing 85% as a group from 2001 when there were only 1.3 million to 2013 when women made up 3.3 million of the U.S. hunters. Not every woman who puts on an orange vest grew up in the sport. Julie Luebke, a contractor at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center, didn’t start until she was in her 20s. “A few co-workers got me interested in shooting shotguns and handguns. From there, I began hunting with a couple of my cousins and their buddies during pheasant hunting season. Since then, I have a group of friends and co-workers and their kids that I go pheasant hunting with in the fall,” she said. In 2006, one of her co-workers asked if she would be interested in teaching hunter safety.

“That is all it took,” she said, “I helped teach my first class in 2006. Initially I taught as a 3-person team, after a few years, it became a 2-person team, with Jessica Jensen and me continuing to teach together, until she moved in 2015. Jessica and I were honored to receive the South Dakota’s 2013 Instructor Team of the Year award.” Now Julie teaches two or three HuntSAFE classes a year in Sioux Falls, plus one class specifically geared toward female participants.

“I love teaching HuntSAFE because I feel that I am making a difference,” she said. “Having the opportunity to teach both the female class and the classes at [South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’] Becoming an Outdoors Woman camp (BOW) each year, there are always women who say that they are taking this class because they are uncomfortable with, or afraid of, firearms. Sometimes it is due to a traumatic experience earlier in their life, or maybe they have never held a gun before. But to see them at the end of the class, with more confidence and understanding of firearms and gun safety, that is why I teach.” “I have had the opportunity to be with women and kids on their first hunt. It is so much fun when they see their first pheasant in the field, when they take their first shot, and eventually when they successfully shoot their first one,” she said. Check the fields this fall. You may see Julie pheasant or deer hunting. And she’ll be among friends. n

t’s been called the store that’s “a little bit of everything.” Yet the eclectic variety of the Gypsy Trading Company in Brandon is anything but little. Their newly expanded space located on Splitrock Boulevard offers 4,500 square feet of retail and classroom space. Owners Ellison and Billy Cutrer have been in business since September of 2015 and are excited to embrace the larger dwelling to better serve the community. Their store, which sells custommade home decor, antiques, greeting cards and craft supplies, focuses on variety and eclecticism. And it’s not all about selling. Gypsy Trading Company also plans to offer weekly classes featuring skilled artisans from all over to instruct on trades such as stenciling, stained glass and a variety of other “do-

it-yourself” projects. “With our expanded store, we will be able to offer larger class sizes and host events with snacks and wine–like a ‘Girls Night Out’,” says Ellison. The couple also works closely with community education to promote their specialty classes. “We are excited to bring in other instructors and grow our classes,” she adds. Since opening, the family-owned business has flourished in its Brandon location by selling a mix of things not found in other stores. “Most of the items at Gypsy Trading Company are custom made,” she adds. But thanks to new retail opportunities and an overwhelming response from the community, they will soon be including more items and offerings in their new location. “We love to help people with
their projects,” she adds. With a bevy of vintage and antique materials, the couple can assist in designing and creating custom pieces alongside their customers for an intimate, family-friendly experience. For those less hands-on, you can choose from their large selection of merchandise or opt to customize for a truly one-of-akind design.
