Riverfest Riverfest 2023

If you feel like summer has flown by and you haven’t had a chance to check anything off your bucket list, Downtown Riverfest is the perfect event for you. Going on 10 straight summers, Downtown Sioux Falls plans to continue hosting this awesome, family-friendly event (shoutout to The Bancorp for sponsoring the event!). This year, the FREE event will be held on August 19th at Fawick Park with activities starting at 4:00 pm. Regional bands will perform live music along the Big Sioux River beginning at 4:30 pm until 11:00 pm. This year’s amazing lineup includes: Rich Show & the Airports, Spooncat!, and Kory and the Fireflies.

If you plan on lounging around or listening to music for an extended period, don’t forget a lawn chair and/ or blankets! Between acts, be sure to check out all of the delicious food and beverage vendors. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Friends of the Big Sioux River (FBSR) and their efforts to keep our river clean and beautiful! In addition to food vendors, several retail and display vendors will be in attendance as well. While enjoying amazing vendors and musicians, don’t forget to make time for the activities tent! Activities are fun for people of any age, so make sure you bring the kids along! AND remember, parking downtown is free on weekends, so there is no excuse to miss this end-of-summer event! n

Preparing for the Unexpected:

MAKING THINGS EASIER FOR YOUR LOVED ONES

Life can be unpredictable, and emergencies can happen when we least expect them. Think about this: if you have a medical emergency, could your loved ones access your phone? If your partner couldn’t talk, do you know their usernames and passwords? Does your family know the names of your doctor and important medical information? Could they easily find your IDs and legal documents?

Make sure your family doesn’t have to wade through piles of paperwork or argue about who will take care of the cat by having vital personal, health and financial information in a centralized and accessible place. Here are some practical steps you can take:

Personal and Digital Connections

Compile a list of your usernames, passwords, and other login details in case someone needs to access your devices or online accounts in an emergency. You can keep this information secure by using password management tools or a digital vault. Don’t forget to create a list of essential contacts, including employers, attorneys,

and financial advisors, so your family can easily reach out to them if needed.

Health and Medical Information

During a medical emergency, who will advocate for your health needs? Having quick access to your health information can be a lifesaver. Create a document and let your family know details about your primary healthcare providers, ongoing medical conditions, allergies, and medications you’re currently taking. Consider obtaining an advance directive to provide instructions for medical care if you become unable to make decisions. According to the Journal of Preventative Medicine only 26% of Americans have taken this important step.

Legal and Financial Documents

Ensure your important documents such as wills, trusts, advance directives, and power of attorney are in order to make things easier for your family. Your representative may need access to proof of

ADVERTORIAL

ownership documents such as the deed to your house and vehicle titles or contracts such as a sale of property. Do you use an online financial aggregation service or app? Make sure a trusted person knows where to find all of this information and how to access anything that is password protected.

Preparing for emergencies involves organizing your personal, health, and financial information. Take proactive steps today to help your loved ones navigate emergencies with ease and peace of mind.

Tools and Tricks for Your

Lashes & Brows

Keeping up with the latest makeup trends is very time consuming and, quite frankly, exhausting. This article is going to give you the tools and simplest tricks to perfect your lashes and eyebrows to keep up with the fast paced 2023 trends!

First, let’s talk about eyelashes. The easiest way to enhance your overall eyelashes is taking care of them. Yes, that means taking off your makeup every night and treating them with the proper care they deserve. Always use a gentle makeup remover combined with a mascara that is easy to rinse off. Next, investing in an eyelash serum is advised (opt for a serum-infused mascara) and apply the serum to the base of your eyelash roots daily for at least 2-3 months. After you achieve your desired look, you can reduce application to 2-3 times per week to maintain results. From there avoid eyelash curlers, apply natural oils and gels, and apply (or consume) plenty of Vitamin E.

Next, which is my absolute favorite thing to talk about, is eyebrows! I love the different ways that you can style and shape your eyebrows to shake up your daily look. Some techniques include using an eyebrow pencil, hair dye, or lamination. Eyebrow lamination is a trending technique used by many to brush eyebrow strands into perfect, individual shape to give an overall elevated and glowing look. Lamination, which is basically a perm for your eyebrows, can be done by a local esthetician. If you are trying to be financially concious, there are numerous online products that you can try at home or you can use a stronger hair gel, or soap, with a spoolie brush. The technique is to sleek your eyebrows upwards and outwards to create a high arch. Once you love how your brows look, use some setting spray to help them stay in place! n

Fashionable Staples You Wished You had

BoughtSooner

Looking to purge your current wardrobe to fill it with items that you would actually wear more than once per year? We are going to dive into some wardrobe essentials that I guarantee will be your go-to’s this fall.

If you’re looking to just curl up on the couch or run some errands, a comfortable, two-pieced lounge set is an absolute essential. I’d recommend a solid, neutral, matching-colored set to find an effortless look.

My next favorite thing to have in my wardrobe are at least two colors of high-waisted, drawstring shorts or pants that are made from linen. Linen is the perfect fabric to keep you cool during warm fall days and also great at keeping you warm during the chilly nights. I love linen because it gives you an overall breezy, casual and graceful appearance.

Next are jeans. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find the perfect pair of jeans that fits your figure when sizes are not consistent across brands so I recommend trying on different styles of jeans in-store that would go with any casual top that you have at home. The relaxed, boyfriend style jean

is very trending and perfect for fall weather. Try to steer clear from too many tears in the pant leg as that has gone out of style.

And to top it off, don’t resort to just sweaters and cardigans because you can find the perfect top that lasts you through each season simply by layering it. I absolutely recommend pima cotton based t-shirts for errand running, dinner dates, or lounging days. This material is an absolute game changer that is soft and one of the finest cottons in the world. The best part? This material is resistant to tearing, wrinkling, and fading that will *slay* every outfit. Have a great fall y'all! n

THE IMPORTANCE OF TIRE MAINTENANCE

The experts at Schulte Automotive share advice on tire maintenance and replacement.

Tire maintenance is an essential aspect of car ownership that will keep you safe on the road and save money on car-related expenses. When it comes to car safety, seat belts, airbags, and vehicle lights are usually the first things that come to mind. Tires, on the other hand, are one of your car’s most important safety elements, which is why the skilled technicians at Schulte Automotive stress the importance of proper tire maintenance. The first step in tire maintenance is to regularly check your tire pressure. Underinflated and overinflated tires can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduce the life of your tires. On the other hand, overinflated tires can be dangerous as they can cause blowouts and uneven wear.

Another aspect of tire maintenance is tire rotation. If you don’t rotate your tires regularly, your tires will wear out faster causing problems like poor handling. When you rotate tires regularly it minimizes the stress on your engine resulting in better performance and saving money on fuel.

You should also inspect your tires regularly for signs of wear or damage. Look for any cuts, punctures, or bulges on the sidewall of your tires, as these can be indications of serious damage. Additionally, check the tread depth of your tires. The minimum safe tread depth is 2/32 of an inch. If your tires are less than this, you should replace them.

If you are not sure if your tires require maintenance or replacement, take your vehicle to the experts at Schulte Automotive for a tire check. If the tire check results in your vehicle needing new tires, Schulte Automotive has a large selection of tires for all makes and models. You don’t have to own a Subaru to go to Schulte Automotive. In fact, they are ranked 29th out of 635 Subaru dealerships in the nation for tire sales by volume. You can trust the experts at Schulte Automotive to quote you fair pricing to replace your tires. They will provide you with good, better, best pricing along with the education to help you select tires that fit your budget and your needs. They even offer financing options. Every tire purchase comes with free tire rotations and alignment checks for the life of the tires along with free roadside assistance for two years. If you are like many South Dakotans that change your tires from winter tires to summer tires, Schulte Automotive will store your winter tires until it is time to change them again relieving you of the hassle of storing and transporting your tires when they need to be changed for the seasons.

Being a full-service dealership, Schulte Automotive has an advantage over other tire shops when it comes to servicing your vehicle. They provide mechanical, collision, and windshield replacement services in addition to customization options including window tinting, upholstery repair/replacement, and auto restoration. With all the services your vehicle could require in one location, Schulte Automotive makes servicing your car hassle-free.

ADVERTORIAL

The fact that they have a full-service repair shop is not the only benefit of using Schulte Automotive. They provide a complimentary concierge service. While your car is getting fixed, you may select from one of their 100 loaner cars. They will pick up and deliver your car for free from your home or place of business, and they will deliver it back to you after the job is finished.

If you choose to wait for your vehicle repair you can relax in Schulte Automotive’s comfortable customer lounge with free Wi-fi, an internet bar with a charging station, large screen TVs, massage chairs, video games, snacks, and self-service beverages. They recently added an 11,000-squarefoot community dog park that is open to the public.

Another compelling incentive to pick Schulte Subaru above their competitors is their love promise. You can be confident that when you bring your vehicle to Schulte Automotive, you will receive an exceptional customer service experience with every interaction.

Schulte Automotive is not only the best place to get your vehicle repaired, but it is also an excellent place to work with competitive pay. They are now looking for mechanical and collision repair specialists. For additional information, go to www.subarufosiouxfalls.com.

IMPACT WEALTH MANAGEMENT

For veteran Financial Advisor Richelle Hofer, AWMA® AAMS® CRPC® ChFEBC®, helping her clients invest their hard-earned wealth to align with their future goals has been her passion for nearly two decades. She notes, “The thing that I love most about financial planning is the incredibly deep relationships that are formed. Money touches every part of our lives… the happy things like planning for your children’s education, your retirement, and vacations, but also really hard things like navigating an untimely death, divorce or job loss. A good financial advisor walks side by side with you through all those things. I consider my clients friends.”

However, after taking a hard look at what financial planners typically charge for their services she decided that she could and would do better for her clients with a unique and totally flat-fee pricing structure. This philosophy has led her to open her own firm, Impact Wealth Management, that she runs with the

assistance of her sister, Heather, who serves as her Client Experience Manager.

According to Richelle, “ Traditionally, financial advisors charge a fee that is a percentage of the total portfolio you have with that advisor. I started to see a real problem with that model. The work that I do for clients is not directly correlated with the dollars in their portfolio. A $500,000 portfolio can be just as complex as a $5,000,000 portfolio, but under a traditional model, the $5,000,000 client will pay almost 10 times more for the work that gets done.  This does not seem fair and equitable to me!”

And while financial firms frequently claim to have fully transparent fees, the fact that they vary quarterly literally debunks that claim. Richelle also shares that advisors are often paid in multiple ways so make sure you are aware of exactly how your advisor is compensated. She notes, “For a lot of people, their financial planning fee is one

of their biggest annual expenses and yet almost no one I run into can tell me how much they actually pay their advisor.  Some people know the percentage, but very few have translated that into actual dollars and cents.”

For Richelle, building Impact Wealth Management to serve clients in a totally transparent and equitable manner has been paramount to her business because at the end of the day, it’s more than just business to her. “Life is just more fun when you feel good about the work that you’re doing, and your clients are raving about you to their friends. We are all about winwin relationships. For us, it ’s not about becoming the biggest financial planning firm, it ’s about becoming the best and at the end of the day having the satisfaction of knowing that you have given your all to the people who are counting on you to help them plan their futures.”

In the Kitchen: Making a Statement with Tile

Charming, understated, bold, and stunning are just some characteristics that tile can singlehandedly bring to your kitchen’s backsplash. Not only functional, but tile is as hardworking as it is beautiful. It protects your walls from moisture, oil, food preparation mishaps, and general wear and tear of a kitchen while making cleanup a breeze. In terms of expense, it can also be a relatively cost-effective way to boost your kitchen style versus other, more extensive renovations such as new cabinetry, countertops, flooring, or appliances. An additional perk is that it can increase the value of your home when done well.

Tile comes in many different materials and price points, from exceptionally affordable ceramic and porcelain options to more pricey sophisticated, natural stones with elaborate mosaics and inlays. Some of the most common types of tiles include:

CERAMIC: affordable and durable

PORCELAIN: more durable but often more expensive than ceramic

GLASS: most stain-resistant but most likely to chip or crack

NATURAL STONE: requires sealing

34 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2023

In addition to different materials, tile comes in an incredible array of designs, shapes, styles, finishes, and textures, including stunning 3D options. In determining the best fit to accommodate your style, space, and budget, you must decide if you are willing to dive into bold new trends that may not have long-lasting staying power versus classic styles that typically stand the test of time.

It’s a good practice to purchase samples of the tile or tiles you are considering to compare and contrast with your current kitchen style, countertops, cabinets, and flooring, allowing you to determine if the color, style, size, shape, and other qualities mesh well with your finishes to deliver the ultimate design impact you’re working to achieve.

Installation is also a key to your final product. For example, when choosing subway tile, your options are incredibly diverse. You can install it in various creative patterns, from the traditional and classic running bond pattern, an intricate double basket weave, or a refined herringbone, giving you distinctively different looks. Grout color also makes a dramatic impact with striking contrast, such as black grout with white tile or selecting subtle tone-on-tone shades.

Whichever tile and installation choices you make, not only will your backsplash deliver an excellent first impression of your kitchen and make a statement on your style, it will finish your kitchen beautifully. n

OLD

ORCHARD

Lodge

On the east side of Sioux Falls, in the iconic Old Orchard neighborhood, sits a mountain lodge-inspired home on two heavily wooded acres. From the moment you pull into the driveway, you feel like you’ve left Sioux Falls and transported yourself to a luxury mountain ski town. It’s safe to say that these homeowners were inspired by Colorado architecture and their builder, Brad Weber with Weber Construction, helped make their vision a reality.

From the moment you step into this 6,000 square foot, rustic timber frame home, your eye goes right to the stunning metal handrailing and up to the beams on the ceiling. The impressive 25-foot-tall stone fireplace ties in perfectly with two reclaimed rustic wood walls and white oak floors. This Colorado inspired home was built in 2014 and it has aged very well, like a fine wine. The homeowners wanted an open concept home that was made for family gatherings with two large dining areas and an outdoor space made for creating memories. They had a vision of their future home, and it was not a small task to take up on their own, so they enlisted the help of Montgomery’s during the initial build. The homeowner states “I have worked with various

designers from Montgomery’s for over 25 years, for this home and for three prior homes.” This homeowner also expressed that their goal was to create a calm environment for their family by bringing the outdoors in. With the help of Montgomery’s, they were able to do that by using organic materials and a natural color palette.

Six months ago, this homeowner decided it was time for a refresh, so she requested the help of Montgomery’s designer, Emma Jansma. Together they focused on updating the living room, dining room, and primary bedroom. The homeowner explains, “I needed performance fabric for durability that can handle a family of six as well as four dogs and two cats. I wanted recliners for comfort and functionality that were also sleek and sophisticated.

The Montgomery designer Emma explains that she understands the homeowners’ style and that made their partnership a fun experience for creating a beautiful space. Emma said “After our initial meeting in the store, we had a consultation at her home, where I took measurements and then made a presentation for her at the store. My job is to understand what the client wants and to streamline the right options.” Designing a home can become overwhelming and narrowing down options helped this homeowner decide what looks good together. Emma had to ensure that the design elements worked cohesively with the structural elements of the house that were not going to be changed.

40 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2023
Emma Jansma

This homeowner’s recent furniture and decor refresh ties in beautifully with her current kitchen cabinets, Cesar stone countertops, and subway tile backsplash. Whether you’re looking for an entire home interior design service or just a refresh for a room or two, Montgomery’s designer, Emma Jansma, will listen to your needs and create the look you are wanting. The homeowner stated, “Emma was great with communicating throughout the entire process and keeping me informed of delivery time frames.” The homeowners were pleased to have the assistance of a Montgomery’s designer as they were able to refresh the space that the homeowners spend the most time in. n

InterAct

SHINING A LIGHT ON EFFECTIVE AUTISM TREATMENTS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

In 2023, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2020 data. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.

Applied Behavior Analysis, also known ABA therapy is a research-based treatment that has shown to be effective for individuals with a variety of behavioral and mental health conditions. Considered more comprehensive than early intervention, it has proven itself a winner, leading the American Academy of Pediatrics to recommend it.

InterAct is an ABA provider in Sioux Falls at 1507 E. 69th. Alison Hulshof, co-owner of InterAct, says ABA is one of the best therapies for children with autism and other related developmental disorders.

“InterAct believes that early identification and early intervention services are critical in helping kids with autism develop,” said Alison. “Early intervention through ABA focuses on improving skills and shrinking gaps in skill development between your child and your typical peers.”

ABA is intense. But providing high-quality, early intervention services using ABA, kids with autism can learn and grow. ABA uses consistency in teaching strategies in a reinforcing and fun environment for kids. In ABA therapy, it is critical to have strong family involvement. An ABA program for your child is developed by a behavior analyst and will be delivered through

ADVERTORIAL

a team of registered technicians (RBT’s) to help your child grow and develop skills and decrease barriers to learning.

ABA has its benefits.

“ABA helps a child with autism increase positive interactions with family members and peers and, in turn, will improve the quality of life for the family,” said Alison.

Before seeking ABA services, Alison says it is critical that your child receives a medical diagnosis.

“if you do not know how to go about navigating to get the appropriate medical diagnosis, feel free to reach out to us, and we will help you find a provider. A diagnosis helps a family move forward with the right services,” she said.

ABA is not a cure and doesn’t try to be, but it makes life better she says.

“If you suspect your child is showing symptoms of autism and are concerned, it is important to remember the sooner you SEEK OUT HELP, the sooner your child can start growing and gaining skills.”

REVOLUTIONIZING DENTISTRY:

Exploring New Technologies Transforming Oral Healthcare

Advancements in technology have permeated every aspect of our lives, and the field of dentistry is no exception. The integration of new technologies has revolutionized the way dental professionals diagnose, treat, and care for patients. From innovative imaging techniques to cuttingedge treatment options, these developments have significantly improved the efficiency, accuracy, and overall patient experience in dentistry.

DIGITAL DENTISTRY:

Digital dentistry has emerged as a game-changer, replacing traditional methods with efficient and precise digital solutions. Computer-Aided Design/ Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)

technology allows dentists to create highly accurate 3D models of a patient’s teeth, leading to the creation of custom restorations like crowns, bridges, and veneers. This streamlined process reduces chair time and enhances the final outcome.

INTRAORAL SCANNERS:

Say goodbye to messy impressions! Intraoral scanners capture digital impressions of a patient’s teeth and gums, providing a more comfortable and accurate alternative to traditional impression materials. These scanners allow for precise measurements and create digital models that can be shared with laboratories, resulting in betterfitting restorations.

3D PRINTING:

3D printing has gained momentum in dentistry, enabling the production of patient-specific surgical guides, dentures, and aligners. This technology allows for faster fabrication, reduced costs, and increased customization. Dentists can now offer patients tailored solutions that fit their unique needs, ultimately improving treatment outcomes.

LASER DENTISTRY:

Laser technology has transformed various dental procedures, offering less invasive and more precise treatments. Lasers are used for conservative tissue removal and tongue and lip tie releases. The benefits of laser dentistry include reduced pain, faster healing, and minimal bleeding, providing patients with a more comfortable experience.

The integration of new technologies has propelled dentistry into a new era, revolutionizing the way oral healthcare is delivered. From digital dentistry and 3D printing to laser technology and intraoral scanning, these advancements have enhanced diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient outcomes. As technology continues to evolve, dentistry will undoubtedly witness further breakthroughs, improving access, affordability, and the overall quality of dental care for patients worldwide. Embracing these latest innovations, dental professionals are well-equipped to provide exceptional care while prioritizing patient comfort and satisfaction in the modern age.

Our cutting edge technology and care set us apart, prioritizing your individual needs. Give Great Plains Dental a call to schedule your appointment.

Back to School:

Boost Your Child’s Immune System

Summer seems to go in the blink of an eye and just like that- every aisle is filled to the brim with back to school supplies, reminding us that along with our new set of No. 2 pencils, the return to school comes with the potential for your child to get sick. Illnesses are hard to avoid, especially in enclosed public spaces where germs spread quickly and easily. So, what can you as a parent do to boost your child’s immune system to guard them against illness when they return to the classroom?

With the sun still shining through August and September, the easiest way to give your child a boost is time spent outdoors. Not only is exercise great for keeping your

48 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2023 sfw | HEALTH

child’s immune system strong, but the Vitamin D gleaned from the sun is also a natural boost to your child’s health system. This gets harder as months get colder, so you may also want to provide supplements. Supplements are most soluble in fatty food - taking a Vitamin D supplement with milk or yogurt, for example, helps the body absorb it better.

A healthy diet is very important for preventing illnesses. Pre-and probiotic foods such as yogurt, apples, bananas, and asparagus are good options to round out your child’s diet giving their bodies a healthy defense. Adding strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries to a yogurt dish goes beyond making a yummy parfait, it also provides antioxidants and vitamins. Did you know fermented foods are also good probiotics? If your child enjoys pickles, don’t be afraid to let them have one every once in a while. And berries, dark leafy greens, and yes, even broccoli can be excellent contributors to healthy eating. Of course, any foods containing fiber, protein, potassium, zinc, and other vitamins are always helpful.

Additionally, make sure your child is getting enough sleep. A good night’s sleep is invaluable. Appropriate sleep time needed varies depending on age and the individual, so pay attention to your child’s temperament and try to help figure out the amount of sleep that’s right for them. Some middlegrade children are fine on 8 hours, others need closer to 10. Even some teenagers do better with up to 10 hours of sleep.

Finally, don’t forget the basics. Teach your children to keep their hands washed and cover their mouths and noses with their elbows when sneezing or coughing. There is absolutely value in the everyday things we can do to help boost our children’s immunity so they can enjoy the back-to-school experience. A healthy kid, after all, is a happy kid! n

OPTIMAL AGING AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION

As we age, normal wear-and-tear like oxidative breakdown and stress build up around the body, and nowhere are these effects more prevalent than in the brain. It is normal to experience some forgetfulness with advancing age, but this can still significantly decrease quality of life. The best way to minimize these effects is by keeping the mind and body in good health by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating well, learning new skills, and making plans or using a calendar to stay organized. Additionally, using a supplement to protect from these oxidative breakdown processes can proactively slow the progression of gradual cognitive decline that commonly occurs with advanced age.

The first supplement we have chosen to discount this month is Memory Plus. This supplement is composed of botanicals, amino acids, antioxidants, and nutrients that may help to enhance mental function, memory, and attention while also protecting against cognitive degeneration. The second supplement is Co-enzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone. Co-enzyme Q10 is a substance that is necessary for providing energy to nearly all cells in the body, and it also has antioxidant properties that are important to protect the body and for the immune system to function normally. The body has the ability to create its own co-enzyme Q10, but this process requires a variety of nutrients and minerals. Most Americans’ diets do not provide adequate amounts of these vitamins and minerals, so Co-enzyme Q10 levels are often insufficient without supplementation. A general rule of need is 100mg once you turn 50, and additional 100mg for every drug that depletes CoQ10.

What would you do if you woke up one morning and couldn’t hear out of one ear?

Dr. Donald Bennett, an ENT physician at Midwest ENT & Allergy says “It’s important to not dismiss the condition. It may be sudden deafness, an unexplained loss of hearing either all at once or over of few days because there is something wrong with the sensory organs of the inner ear. If the right diagnosis and treatment aren’t administered right away, the hearing loss may be permanent.”

“Sudden deafness is rare and scary,” said Dr. Bennett. “It usually only affects one ear. And, as the condition suggests, it comes on suddenly. People with sudden deafness report waking up not hearing in one ear and sometimes experiencing spinning or ringing in the ear. Others may first notice when they put their phone up to their deafened ear and can’t hear.”

According to the National Institute of Deafness, sudden deafness strikes between one and six people per 5,000

SUDDEN Deafness

Is it a medical emergency?

every year. But, the actual number of new cases could be much higher because sudden deafness often goes undiagnosed. Sudden deafness can happen to people at any age, but most often affects adults in their late 40s and early 50s.

“Sometimes people who have experienced sudden deafness put off seeing a doctor because they think it is due to allergies or a sinus infection or fluid behind the ear.”

However, Dr. Bennett says, “Identifying the condition early and receiving the right diagnosis with a formal treatment plan is the key. Consider sudden deafness symptoms a medical emergency and seek care immediately.”

Regaining lost hearing begins with the correct diagnosis.

Dr. Bennett refers to the clinical Axiom that declares “common things are common,” which is accurate for conditions such as fluid behind the ear drum. However, keeping a high level of suspicion for something rarer such as nerve hearing loss is key. “For sudden deafness,

50 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2023

a hearing test is essential in measuring sound levels and making a diagnosis.”

“Patients who receive a quick and correct diagnosis can be treated with steroids. The medication should be used as soon as possible for the best results. Receiving timely treatment greatly increases the chance that patients will recover at least some of their hearing.”

Though little is known about the causes of most cases of sudden deafness (only about 10% of people diagnosed have an identifiable cause), one thing that is known is the sooner the treatment, the better. According to the National Institute of Deafness, about half of people with sudden deafness recover some or all of their hearing spontaneously, within one or two weeks of onset.

“The window gets smaller the longer an individual waits to get treatment,” said Dr. Bennett. “Waiting three or four weeks can be too late. Typically hearing doesn’t return. However, with the right treatments as soon as possible, you have a good chance at recovering most, if not all, lost hearing.”

Hearing professionals believe hearing is your most important sense because it connects you to the world and is very important to your overall health and happiness.

If you experience sudden hearing loss or any other hearing problems, don’t delay. Contact the expert team of physicians and audiologists at Midwest ENT & Allergy for diagnosis and treatment. n

HEALTHY VISION, HAPPY LIFE

visions eye care has the solution to digital eye strain

Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center has been instrumental in assisting patients to achieve healthy vision in Sioux Falls for almost two decades. The team of optometrists – Dr. Angela Gulbranson, Dr. Jennifer Hupke, Dr. Ashley Gentrup, and Dr. Christian DeJongh – specializes in everything from adult and pediatric exams to contact lens fittings and advanced vision therapy. There is also an optical boutique to pick your next stylish pair of frames.

The doctors at Visions Eye Care are experts in the field and offer a wide range of exams, services, and treatments for patients. Visions Eye Care strives to be “at the forefront in technology to allow for early detection and treatment. Combine that with the compassion [they] show for each patient, and you’ll immediately see the difference.”

With our society’s shift toward remote working and learning in the last few years, a common problem the doctors at Visions Eye Care see in the clinic is visual discomfort due to eye misalignment. Our extensive use of digital technology requires us to use our near vision more than ever.

Symptoms of eye misalignment include headaches, dizziness, neck and shoulder pain, eye fatigue, eye pain, motion sickness, light sensitivity, and dry eye sensation. At least two-thirds of people with eye misalignment experience some of these symptoms.

Visions Eye Care’s answer for eye misalignment? Neurolens®!

When the eyes are misaligned, they cannot see one clear image, which causes the brain to work overtime to combine each image coming from each eye into one. This misalignment puts a lot of stress on the trigeminal nerve, a nerve in the face, resulting in debilitating symptoms. But with Neurolenses®, the eye misalignment is corrected so patients can see clearly and comfortably again.

The Neurolens system consists of two parts: the Neurolens measurement device, Gen 2 (NMD2), which measures the misalignment in the eyes; and the Neurolenses, which have a unique contoured prism to correct the misalignment and restore comfortable vision to patients.

According to neurolens.com, 93% of patients respond positively to wearing Neurolens. These revolutionary lenses can be added to any frame, prescription, or even no prescription.

If you are experiencing these symptoms and are wondering if Neurolens could make a difference in your overall quality of life, contact Visions Eye Care to make an appointment. Call (605) 274-6717 or visit their website sdvisions.com to request an appointment

Farmer, Leader, Extraordinary Role Model

Tough as nails with a fierce feminine touch sums up Kelsey Geraets well. In a role traditionally held by men, she has kicked down the door and broken the glass ceiling with no intentions of holding back in her quest to run her family farm for the next generation.

Growing up as the eldest of three children in a tight-knit family in rural Colton, Kelsey is currently the only sibling working on her family farm with her parents David and Katti. The fact that she has always known she wanted to work in agriculture made attaining her degree from South Dakota State University a no-brainer. What was a shock was the feedback she got when she announced she was returning to the farm to work after graduating.

Kelsey shares, “I got a lot of grief when I told people I was going back to the farm. People thought it was a waste of money to even go to college then. Because of that, I am trying to be that woman a younger me would have looked up to and modeled herself after. I am just trying to be someone a younger Kelsey would be so

Women have a built-in maternal instinct and patience that not a lot of men possess. I also think that my attention to detail has made me better at being able to read cattle than most male counterparts. Why wouldn’t you want a job that makes you feel like a total badass every day? Getting to prove that I can do a man’s job every day and do it better than my men counterparts; sign me up!

proud of. I just wish I would have had someone like me to look up to when I was young, someone who could have given me confidence in my decision to go back to the farm.”

Now three years later, Kelsey loves every day of heading up a 2,000-head cattle operation as the Feedlot Manager at JPJ Enterprises, one cog in the wheel of her family farm’s diverse operations. “We like to look at it as a closed-loop system. The cattle manure feeds the crops, crops feed the cattle and ethanol, and the ethanol and crops feed the cattle. That diversification allows us to tap into different sectors depending on the market.”

The experience she gained while taking a preveterinarian route at SDSU has been invaluable for her day-to-day operations in the feedlot. “Unless something is terribly wrong, I feel confident in caring for our cattle on a daily basis, so I’m very happy I can do that with the experience I gained.”

As with many family businesses, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Kelsey and her parents in learning to work together as an employer and employee. “It was definitely a change coming in and working with my parents everyday. There was a struggle to find where I fit for a while at the beginning. My advice would be to make sure you define everybody’s responsibilities so there is no confusion about whose job is what.”

In South Dakota, agriculture is a true power player. According to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources, it has an annual impact of $32.1 billion in sales, one reason that makes it the state’s leading industry. A fact that Kelsey thoroughly understands and is working overtime to get a foothold as a leader in state commodity groups. These groups typically engage in education and policy work that benefit South Dakota farmers and their future.

All in on her commitment to protecting the farming industry now and for future generations, Kelsey is one of few woman to serve on the South Dakota Corn Growers Association as a board member. She also serves on the South Dakota Beef Industry Council’s research committee and as the President of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Auxiliary. Having just returned from Washington, D.C. on a Farm Bill lobbying trip, Kelsey learned firsthand the importance of local representation. “Without these associations, we would be silenced. We wouldn’t have a voice. Do you think people of Congress are going to come to individual producers when it comes to deciding crop insurance on the farm bill? Heck no. Those ag programs that keep us farming wouldn’t be helping us out. By being a leader of your peers you become the voice with the board being your medium.”

Beyond her passion for agriculture, the reality of her lifestyle has been challenging. “Besides the physical part of being a 120-pound girl working with animals 10 times my weight, the agricultural industry is emotionally and physically draining. It is hard on a person. I always knew that it was hard to work in this industry but I didn’t know it was this hard.”

When Kelsey can find a spare moment, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her friends and family (although not nearly as much as she’d like). “The long hours make it difficult for me to hang with my friends or do fun things that other people my age normally do.”

At the end of the day, Kelsey has learned to define her role, find her place, and know she made the right choice to continue the work her family has done for generations before her. “I believe that growing up on the family farm really made me the individual I am today. I know the value of hard work and determination to get what you want out of life. There is no other profession that would give me the satisfaction and drive that farming does. It is in my blood.” n

Avoid Last Minute Back-to-School Panic

Schedule Child Wellness Exams Early for Required Sports Physicals and Immunization Records

From the bright eyes of kindergarteners to the rolling eyes of teenagers, parents are facing the chaos of the back-toschool season. Required immunization records and sports physical are easy to forget among the long list of school supplies. Avoid this last-minute panic by scheduling a wellness exam and gathering the necessary documents well before schools starts.

National Immunization Awareness Month is held in August and informs parents about vaccinations and the requirements for kindergarteners and sixth graders. A full list of vaccinations for each age is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Use the QR code to see the immunization schedule.)

Vaccination is just one step to keep kids healthy. As the halls fill, a multitude of hands are covering coughs and touching doorknobs and handrails. Washing hands and remembering to cover a cough are important practices to reduce the risk for a cold, flu, or other infectious disease.

“As kids are exposed to more germs and viruses at school, the chances your child will end up at home in bed are higher,” said Rebecca Sime, RN, Project Firstline, (sdprojectfirstline.org) program manager for the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC). “The common cold is miserable enough. Many children have fallen behind on regular vaccination and the risk for serious disease like measles, mumps, and chicken pox has increased.”

Pre-teens and teenagers preparing for college may need booster shots and vaccination to protect from HPV-related cancers and spinal meningitis.

Like any medication, vaccines may cause some minor side effects. Younger children may act fussy. Some kids feel sore where the shot was given or develop a low-grade fever. Applying a cool, wet washcloth on the sore area and offering extra hugs helps ease discomfort.

“Now is the time to get caught up. Routine immunizations are key to controlling vaccine preventable diseases,” explained Sime. “Vaccinating on time means healthier children, families, and communities.”

Infection prevention keeps you healthy during cold and flu season. Get vaccinated. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Check out https://www.sdprojectfirstline.org for infection prevention training.

Bright Start Encourages Immunization

Pregnant women and infants need extra protection against germs and viruses. Regular appointments and immunizations help keep mom and baby healthy. Bright Start home visiting nurses provide information on upcoming immunizations and well visits to keep growing babies on track.

“Supporting first-time expecting and new moms through pregnancy and into the toddler phase is an amazing journey,” shared Emily Carlson, BSN, RN, Bright Start home visiting nurse. “When I visit their home, I can answer their questions about caring for themselves and their baby.”

First-time moms who meet income requirements or have a qualifying risk factor are eligible for the program. Anyone can use the Bright Start Referral Form to learn more about the education and support options.

What's New: Color Splash Studio

Let’s have a party! Tie-dye owners brighten world (and special events) with custom-designed clothing

Color Splash Studio, a make-it-yourself tie dye operation and retail store at 2400 S. Marion Road, Suite 120, is bringing a burst of color to Sioux Falls.

Owners and sisters Molly Quarve and Melanie Hite came up with the idea in March of 2022 and opened in late May of 2023.

“We always wanted to open a business together. We started seeing places that had custom clothing and tried to do it ourselves, and it was chaotic. We both said to each other ‘what if there was somewhere we could do this and leave the mess behind?’ and the light bulb came on over our heads,” said Melanie.

Having just opened this summer, Color Splash has seen more than 200 customers.

“People of all skill levels come in and have fun in the store. They get to tie-dye and tap into their creativity,” said Molly. “We really can say each person has a unique approach.”

The store provides a large selection of basic items like t-shirts, hats, bandanas, pillowcases and tote bags but gives the option of “Bring Your Own Items” for a fully customizable experience.

“Once you choose your inspiration, it is easy to follow the steps to make it happen. After you tie, dye and cure your item, it is ready to go. The process takes about an hour from start to finish,” said Molly.

While Color Splash Studio is primarily ready for walk-ins, they are a special place to host events. From birthday parties to Bachelor/Bachelorette parties, Melanie and Molly want to make your event memorable.

“Once we book your date and number of people, we go from there. We set up based on what kind of event it is. Birthday party people can bring a cake, balloons, drinks, presents and the whole nine yards. Adult parties can bring beer and wine. We help you make each event special.”

Melanie and Molly say each event is a fun activity where people can just hang out and keep it laid back, too.

“Just give us a call and tell us what you are thinking. We will do our best to make it happen,” said Melanie.

So what do these two tie-dye pros say is their go-to design?

“My favorite is the spiral design. It really is the icon of tie dye, and it is instantly recognizable,” said Melanie. The different colors make each piece something special.”

For Molly, her go-to is the crumple. “It is probably the easiest design to do and creates interesting effects.”
