LIVE ON STAGE Sioux Falls Signs Top-Quality Acts By Lisa Peterson
S
ioux Falls will again be treated to some top-quality musical acts in 2018 thanks to the collaboration between a Nashville-based national booking agency, Live On Stage, and it’s local affiliate, Live on Stage Sioux Falls. “Live on Stage in Nashville screens performers from around the world all year long, and then narrows them down to about 30 acts – the best of the best,” said Charlotte Hofer, VicePresident of Live On Stage Sioux Falls. “Then the affiliates, like Live On Stage Sioux Falls, come to Nashville and these acts perform for us for a few minutes, one after another, and we select which ones to bring back into our local community.” It all starts with matching the right artists with a key audience, and selecting that ideal location, said Louis Spoltore, Vice President of Operations for the Live On Stage national office. “We go through a selection process and basically look at all the different genres and sub-groups the artists fit into, and we try to pick artists that are unique with configurations of instrumentation and programming,” Spoltore said. “Then we look at lower priced and higher priced artists based on the size of the group, whether they are a duo or quartet or there might be a larger production within a genre, but all with slightly different instrumentation and slightly different themes.”

Each year Live On Stage has 500 to 600 artists audition for a spot in the Nashville showcase, and 25 to 35 artists are selected. Most of the auditions are not in person, said Spoltore. “We only get together with the artists about twenty percent of the time, so we count heavily on watching videotapes of live performances,” he said, adding, “We look at raw footage of live performances and we can tell pretty quickly if there’s going to be a connection with a certain demographic.” Live On Stage Sioux Falls is part of a nationwide network of similar associations that started in the late 1920s to meet the growing demand for live entertainment, especially in rural areas with small populations, far from the major cities. These associations would raise money first and then hire performers based on what their budgets would allow, said Spoltore. “This way concert associations could bring really great talent to small towns in America,” he said.

“It was a successful formula that has survived to this day.” Today, in partnership with Live On Stage of Nashville, Live On Stage Sioux Falls continues its dedication to bringing concerts of the highest quality to the Sioux Falls area. This coming year’s performers include the 3 Redneck Tenors, Side Street Strutters, and O Sole Trio. “Our list of concerts is really exciting,” enthused Hofer. “I know – I was in Nashville and saw each one of these acts perform to standing ovations!” One big secret of Live On Stage Sioux Falls is the inexpensive concert ticket price, said Hofer. “We are bringing top quality performers to our community at reasonable prices,” she explained. “You shouldn’t have to break the bank on a ticket to see a great live show. At $32.50 a ticket – and just $10 for a student ticket – you can bring the whole family. Everyone should be able to enjoy the arts, and that’s our mission.” n

Love Notes
THE LOST ART OF WRITING
Reignite Romance Through the Written Word By Chellee Unruh
22
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2018
T
echnology has really changed the way we communicate. Couples now converse through a quick text, instant message or snapchat. Words have been replaced with acronyms like ttyl, lol and luv u. Sometimes we avoid words all together and just use emojis to express our emotions. While this quick method of communication expresses how we feel, it often lacks the romance that comes with a hand-written note. There is something special about taking the time to hand write a love note for your significant other. Women love it when they receive a love note from their man, but they aren’t the only ones. Men also find it endearing when they receive a written note of affection. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a poet or a hopeless romantic to be effective. You also don’t need to write a long letter to share your feelings. Some of the best love notes are only a few sentences long. A short little note is just as effective as a lengthy written declaration when you put heart into it. Below are some examples of love notes you can write the man in your life. Some are sassy, others are sweet, but all of them will be effective, guaranteed! “Today I have loved your for 5,110 days. I promise to love you for that times a million more.” This would be a great message to leave on his bathroom mirror. Let’s face it though, not every day will be filled with sunshine and rainbows. There will be days where you start off in an argument. For those days, grab your guy’s favorite breakfast and drop it off at his work with a note that reads:

“Here’s to a better start to the morning. I love you even if you are a little arrogant.” Some of the best love notes paint a mental picture: “I can’t wait to see your face so I can smother you with kisses, XOXO” or “Me, you and a blanket for two! You can decide what we will do. Can’t wait to see you!” We all like to be acknowledged for the things we do so let your man know by leaving a note that says: “Thanks for being a great dad and helping me transport the kids to their activities, they are lucky to have you! I am too!” “Thanks for being the support system I need every day. I love you for all you do for me and our family.” When in doubt, inject a little humor into your love note: “I love being your golf widow! Have fun on the course today. I will mourn your absence until you get home!” “I knew you had impeccable taste when I met you, after all you chose to spend the rest of your life with me. Happy Anniversary!” The next time you want to say I love you, put down your phone and put pen to paper. He will appreciate the gesture! n

Nano Nagle: Passing on her spirit By Natalie Slieter
“God’s divine hand will uphold us.” – Nano Nagle
“The Presentation Sisters serve as role models of the power of a positive spirit every day through their words and deeds. They’ve shown me that positive thinking is not about expecting the best outcome every time, but accepting that whatever outcome happens is the best thing for me at this moment. Now that is faith and the living spirit in action!” – Angie Bakke, chief program officer for EmBe and member of Nano’s Network
N
ano Nagle lived 300 years ago in Ireland. She founded the Presentation Sisters that has ministries all over the world today. She showed compassion to the poor and sick as she served them. Another defining quality she is remembered for is her spirit. Sister Joan Marie Brandner of Aberdeen, SD defines spirit as “energy, enthusiasm, courage and determination.” Nano was enthusiastic and positive about educating children. This was during a time that education was not readily available to children raised in the Catholic Church due to strict penal laws. But despite everything against her, she prayed, listened and followed God’s call. She knew and believed in the importance of education, so she used her spirit to fight for it. She opened her first school for 30 children living in poverty to be educated. Her spirited being and willingness to take risks resulted in five all-girls schools and two all-boys schools opening in Cork City.
Eventually, her spirit drew people to her so the education system for Catholic children was able to expand. She also showed spirit as she served the poor and sick. This was a dangerous job during the time as crime was rampant due to poverty and deprivation in Cork City. But her positivity and spirit kept her going night after night to help those in need. Sister Joan Marie understands the importance of education as well. In the early 1960s, she, like so many other Sisters, was teaching 49 students. One day she was told that another student would be joining her classroom, bringing the total to 50 students. But Sister Joan Marie smiled, remembering Nano’s spirit and was able to joyfully say, “There is always room for one more.” Sister Joan Marie and the Presentation Sisters demonstrate Nano’s spirit by continuing to educate and serve others locally, regionally, nationally,
and across the globe. Like Nano, the Sisters continue to gather and partner with other Presentation People to go out and respond to current needs throughout the world in faithfulness to the gospel. “From the primitive cultures of Papua New Guinea, Guatemala and Zambia, to south Chicago and Flint, Michigan, there are so many sisters who carried and still carry that torch, that spirit and spark of Nano,” Sister Joan Marie said.

Sister Joan Marie advises readers to have a positive outlook on life, in all circumstances. Show positivity to friends, family and strangers. A positive attitude inspires others and encourages them to also be enthusiastic and take risks for the greater good. “The root word for spirit is breath; breath is the source of life. Let’s breathe together for a better world,” Sister Joan Marie encouraged.
Sister Joan Marie Brandner serves in parish ministry in Watertown, SD. She also allows her spirit to ignite as she leads regular prayer and fellowship for the Presentation College football team in Aberdeen, SD. rows have become one of the most important feature on your face. The art of eyebrows has hit the beauty industry your look is not complete unless your “eyebrows are on fleek.” Your best friend will be your brow stylist. Find a stylist who understands your facial shape and your desired eyebrow look. It is very important you choose wisely. Whether it is with thread, tweezers or wax, your stylist will be your guide throughout your journey to fleekness.

Tell your stylist about any medications you are taking when you decide to wax. Waxing can be very painful so they will either suggest a sensitive wax formula for your brows, threading or to see your dermatologist. Purchase a great pair of tweezers to maintain your eye brow shape in between trips to your stylist. Tweezing the hairs is like “good housekeeping,” and don’t forget the top of your brow. Do not be afraid to fill in brows for a desired fuller look. Buying a brow pomade or pencil can narrow and even out facial features. Brows that are looking too angry or too happy are what you should stay away from. However, filling in your natural arch with a color closest to your brows is the winning look. Eye brows are not twins they are sisters. Please do not fool yourself into trying to get your eye brows EXACTLY alike. One will always be slightly higher than the other, or the other one will always will look a smidge more perfect than the other. As long as they are a near match you’re headed down the right path. Brows can allow you to look well rested, make you look like you had an eye lift, and if shaped properly can bring out the brightness in your face. Your brows define who you are, and they show emotion. Bottom line, if you’re rocking a Bert (like that lovable character on Sesame Street) this guide will land you the perfect brow. n

UNWRAP
SPRING! By Brianna Venekamp Imagery by Reistroffer Design Location courtesy of Icon Lounge + Events
N
eed a way to unwrap yourself from winter and transition into spring? Favorite looks feature sheer fabrics and layering. LOVE YOUR LAYERS Layering is great for spring, creates structure and gives bulk to very light and sheer fabrics. Favorite examples of causal layering are where collared button-up shirts peek out from below a much sportier T-shirt or sweatshirt, as opposed to the stuffier layered sweater look we’re used to. SHEER TOPS Forget what you were taught about matching your inner camisole with your top or picking a color closest to your skin tone. Break these old-fashioned rules with the new crop of tanks that feature art-infused prints with comic faces, graphic designs and bright colors for you to wear underneath sheer fabrics. DARING DRESSES Instead of the usual nude slips, give your under garments a modern twist by selecting rich shades, neon accents and intricate lace. To avoid too harsh of a contrast against see-through items, pair a slinky slip in a neighboring color family. Layer camisole dresses over shirts, as well as see-through dresses over full outfits. n

FABRIC PLAYS MAJOR ROLE IN FASHION DESIGNING By Lisa Peterson Photos by Dan Eisenhauer
I
n the world of fashion, a customtailored wardrobe isn’t just about looking good and making a timeless investment; it’s also about the fabric. The difference between natural fibers versus man-made fabric and where the garment is manufactured will determine the final cost. “The cost, look and feel of clothing will vary depending on the textiles used in the design process,” said Anita Kealey, Creative Director of the Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. Kealey’s role at the Institute of Design & Technology is mentoring future designers, opening doors to make the contacts in textile sourcing, and making connections that will help her students get their collections on the runway. Her students experience the apparel design business as they develop their entrepreneurial skills. Kealey is a Custom Tailors & Designers Association (CTDA) Master Tailor and couture designer with her own collections. “The use of fine textiles is essential when creating bespoke and couture fashion,” she said. “Bespoke and couture clothing are traditionally cut from a pattern drafted from scratch for the
customer. Designers research to anticipate trends in style and color, and they must be able to predict, forecast and make selections of colors and textiles two to three seasons in advance for collections,” Kealey said. “Twice a year, I travel to New York City and rotate each year between the high-end textile markets in Paris, Montreal and Italy for new colors and trends in textures and fibers,” she said. “Textiles used in fine couture fashion and bespoke tailoring use natural fibers. Investment in the fabric and how and where it is produced is what determines the cost and the life of the garment,” said Kealey. Most bespoke tailored and made by hand couture fashions are made in the United States, Savile Row in England, Italy, and France. “Not all clothing is made to last,” said Kealey. “The quality of our clothes is in decline and the culprit is a global fashion system that prioritizes ‘fast fashion’ production.” Kealey said her creations are enhanced by top-quality, handpicked, fine fabrics. “High couture clothing cannot exist without top-quality fabrics.” n

SELECTING THE CORRECT TIRES FOR SLIPPERY WINTER ROADS By Jill Funke
“No matter what type of vehicle you have, the tires are critically important.” – Lloyd Nickel
M
other Nature is often a force to be reckoned with when it comes to life in the Midwest. Drivers deal with a variety of challenges including ice, snow and artic temperatures. To best face these challenges, experts in the automotive industry advise automobile owners to pay close attention to their tires. According to Lloyd Nickel, Mercedes-Benz brand manager of Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls, “No one likes to worry about driving during the worst of winter. You are going to rely heavily on your tires. One of the best ways to find peace of mind is to make sure you have the right type of tires and in good working condition.” When helping a customer with a tire purchase, Trudy Deutsch of Manley Tire has a few questions and points to ponder. Deutsch encourages customers to thoroughly consider their own unique automotive and transportation needs. She realizes that occupation can greatly influence a person’s vehicle and tire selection. “If someone is a nurse in a hospital, they are an essential staff person and must be able to get to work.” Another factor in tire selection is the buyer’s location. If they live in a more remote or rural area, they might have

different tire needs that someone who lives along a main city street. Yet just because a person lives in the city that does not mean they are always able to get around and need not pay mind to their tire situation. Deutsch reminds customers that it takes time to get snow removed as she says, “Side streets are not always immediately plowed after a snowfall.” After taking all of these factors into consideration, Deutsch says that many people select all-season tires and use them exclusively as winter-only tires that need to be removed in the Spring. Nickel explains, “All-season tires are a compromise between winter and performance tires.” Deutsch is quick to point out “Winter-only tires will provide far better traction than all-season tires. Their softer rubber composition helps them stay much more flexible in cold temperatures, and their design makes them grab slippery surfaces and bite down for a better grip.” Nickel sums up the all-season vs. winter-only tire options by saying, “No matter what type of vehicle you have, the tires are critically important.” He goes on to add, “The stopping and breaking actions are much better on ice or snow covered roads with winter-only tires.” n

Beauty AND THE
BEAST
For over eleven years Okoboji Skin Care (OSC) has been putting hairs in their rightful place. Whether removing unwanted hair with the latest laser hair removal technology, or replacing hairs lost in the eyebrows through microblading, they know where your hairs belong and where they do not. The aestheticians inside the doors of OSC are experts in their field and would like to share some information you may not know about these two services:
Beauty…in microblading “Microblading is one of the most rewarding services we offer to our clients. They are blown away to see perfect ‘real’ brows return to their face!” commented Dallas Dotson, founder of OSC. Microblading is a beautiful art and an amazing way to reestablish a perfected brow shape. It is a form of semi-permanent tattooing which utilizes a fine handheld blade instead of a traditional tattoo needle. This results in incredibly lifelike, individual hair strokes. OSC developed their technique by privately training with world champion microblade artist Lindsay Ta and Julie Ha at Microblading LA Academy in Woodland Hills, CA. This intensive training, combined with the 5,000+ brow services OSC performs in a year, has lead them to being recognized as one of the top providers in the industry. You will be hard pressed to find a more professional environment in which to have your brows microbladed. These are licensed aestheticians, licensed tattoo artists, and highly trained service providers who are always thrilled to welcome clients into the world of new brows! HEALTHY MENU PLANNING Story & recipe photos by Ashley Sornsin
T
he new year has begun which means many people have set intentions or resolutions focused around taking better care of themselves. Typically, people address this through nutrition and fitness. The truth is, nutrition will play the vital role in any successful program. Without a proper nutrition plan, fitness goals can only go so far. Planning a healthy menu will be the most significant step in making healthy lifestyle changes, ultimately leading to success. While many want to lose weight, the ultimate goals are to feel great and be their best selves. A healthy menu plan focused on plant-based foods is key to reaching these goals. This sample weeklong menu is a great starter for healthy menu planning because it uses foods that will support, fuel, reset and restore your body. It is recommended to follow this sample week for a minimum of 3 weeks, which is when healthy habits set in. During this time, refrain from eggs, dairy and meat as they tend to cause inflammation in the body and are more taxing on the digestive system. This menu is a way to develop a good relationship with food and to use it as nourishment for the body. Variety is the spice of life and through a variety of plant-based foods, you can have a balanced, nutrient-packed menu. Give this healthy menu plan a try for a week and in the weeks following, experiment with substituting in similar combinations of foods. This plan provides a healthy foundation and is a great start to feeling your best! *Remember, before starting any nutrition or exercise program, you should consult with your doctor.

FOOD BRINGS
HUNTERS TOGETHER By Portia Wycliffe Photos courtesy of Pheasants Forever and National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic
T
he number of women in hunting is growing. They’re women of all ages, they sit on all sides of the political table and they have all different reasons for wanting to carry a firearm into the field and harvest their own dinner. Krissie Mason, 55, and Danielle Prewett, 31, are two of those women. Both are featured speakers at the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic February 16 to 18 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls. Mason and Prewett will talk about hunting for food and the dishes they make, but food is essentially the one thing that brings them together at the table. “Food has a way of bringing people together,” Krissie said. “As thinking and feeling creatures, we long for relationship. Food has a way of creating that intimacy and connectedness for a brief period in your day. It’s not that I love cooking so much, it’s that I love being in relationship with others, and making them feel valued and appreciated. Time in the kitchen, and really good fare that you’ve harvested by your own two hands, is a means to that end.”
Krissie was raised a Minnesota farm girl and came from a hunting family. Their family “raised grain, alfalfa, had a huge garden, black angus cattle and chickens,” she said. “That’s just how I was raised. I didn’t know any different. We fished for crappie and walleyes, hunted venison in the fall and birds here and there. Hunting was always field to table, but we didn’t call it that.” Danielle starting cooking wild game while living in Houston, Texas . “I could purchase any type of high quality meat that I could possibly want, but there was something about wild game that I was instantly drawn to,” she said. “You can’t buy it from a grocery store, you have to earn it.” She started upland game hunting five years ago when she moved to North Dakota. “As my perspective of the meat industry began to develop, I started to place more emphasis on harvesting my own food. I want to see where my meat comes from and become part of the story, developing a deeper connection to what I eat.” Their stories are different, but the results are the same – they are both a part of a large increase in the number of women
hunters in the country. The most recent information from the National Shooting Sports Foundation said 85% more women hunted in 2013 than in 2001. In fact, in 2001, there were 1.8 million women hunters. In 2013 that number grew to 3.3 million. It’s a story that can be told best by the food on the table. “We have folks on the left and folks on the right,” Krissie said. No matter how they feel about guns or current politics, they can always find common ground at the table. Krissie said the game can be simple – ground venison, mashed potatoes, home made bread – “It doesn’t have to be fancy.” Danielle enjoys the challenge of finding something different than the usual Midwest fare. Her pheasant repertoire includes pho and Thai curry recipes among many others than can be found on her blog, wildandwhole.com. “My family and friends saw how much wild game I was cooking, or more importantly how I was cooking it, and they urged me to start a blog. She uses the online space to try to change the way people think about wild game cooking – from unhealthier creamy plates to approaching it in a fresh way. “I chose to challenge the standards of wild game cooking by learning to work with the game flavor, not against it, in order to create healthy meals that are delicious.” “Also, when it comes to wild game, I believe in eating ‘nose to tail.’ There is not one part of the animal that I place a higher value and I try to find purpose with everything.” Krissie’s style is more like the food she grew up with on the farm. “There are no secrets if you have good food. Fresh ingredients are the key. You can cook simple stews, chilis, or venison steaks. Pair them with home made bread or a nice bottle of wine.”
Krissie Mason
She’s not above trying game that isn’t common, as well. “I took inspiration from Irma Rombauer’s Joy of Cooking. In her earlier book she had a section on cooking beaver tail and opossum. It was a rural existence where you knew you might have to eat raccoon this week. It was before the vulgar abundance of throw away food brought to us by large commercial farms and technology, like refrigeration.” Join both women at the Wild Game Cooking Stage February 16 to 18 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. They will join other renown game chefs like Hank Shaw and Jack Hennessy who will provide live demonstrations throughout the weekend to turn wild game into delicious family meals. The demos include more than just pheasant. They’ll have quail, venison and fish recipes throughout the weekend. n

TRADITIONAL GLORY By Jennifer Dumke Photos by Margaret Pennock
C
lassic columns, rich woods and grand elegance have given this 1995 custombuilt, two-story home lasting beauty. From the curved open staircase to the multifunctional floorplan, this home was designed to last, not only with its sturdy materials but also with its style. Originally built by Lewis Construction, all it needed was a simple coat of paint and a few updates to the master bath and lower level to completely transform this beauty to the family-friendly home it is today.
Formal living room
Starting with the grand open foyer, a large classic oriental rug softens while faux finished columns by Lynn Flores add stately appeal to the birch wood floors. The oversized front door sets the tone with a large arch top window and chandelier. However, the eye is immediately drawn to the floating curved open staircase. With painted spindles to contrast with the rich stained railing, this unique architectural feature is a true centerpiece. Natural light floods into the formal living room through two-story arched windows. Similar arches are seen in the china cabinet that displays family memorabilia and accent pieces. Soft textured upholstery lessens the formality of the space. A tufted leopard print chair and matching ottoman, dual fabric sofa and plush pillows lend softness while neutral carpet and wall colors keep the open space cozy and bright. A gas fireplace brings in another focal point to the space. Encased in creamy marble tile and traditional white painted carved wood mantle, all that’s needed is a classic framed oversized mirror to complete the look.

Dining room | Grand piano underneath the floating staircase
In true traditional form, a white lacquer grand piano nestles perfectly underneath the floating staircase and is used to display family photos and small accessories. Perfect for formal gatherings and entertaining, the dining room exudes classic elegance. The large table is surrounded by creamy upholstered high back chairs. A touch of historic nostalgia is seen in the birch wood floors with square inlay while a gold and crystal chandelier sparkles above. The oversized windows are covered in painted white wood shutters. But the true attraction of the space are the faux finished walls and columns. Painted in layers of neutral browns and touches of metallic, the room feels intimate and cozy. Painted creamy woodwork and crown molding contrast with the rich hues of the wood floors and wood accents. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home continues the traditional feel while integrating modern day conveniences found in items such as the appliances from Karl’s TV & Appliance. Deep toned cherry kitchen cabinets from Dakota Kitchen & Bath, cobbled tile custom backsplash, granite countertops and birch floors are the perfect materials for both form and function. The oversized dual-tiered island makes for convenient food presentation and casual dining with its wrought iron barstools and expansive space. Pendant lights from Mahlander’s Appliance and Lighting add ambience and showcase the myriad of rich materials and design.

The asymmetrical aesthetics of the space continue with a centered area rug and dark leather furniture. Oversized accessories create an open feel while remaining elegant. A round wood table, coordinating high-back chairs and chandelier are all that’s needed to complete this classic nook for dining. With stately tones and dark woods, the main level office feels like a centuries-old library. Deep emerald green walls, a coffered ceiling and dark stained furniture, trim and furniture create depth while a neutral toned oriental area rug lightens up the tones. A showcase for displaying collectibles, a wall of built-in bookcases provides a backdrop for family treasures. Even the glass French doors are given a hint of custom flair with a stained glass transom window that incorporates a subtle duck motif into the design.

The master bedroom feels majestic with coordinating emerald green painted walls, classic furniture and deep wood tones. For added contrast, creamy carpets and crisp white painted woodwork and fireplace mantle keep the space bright and soft. In addition to a four-poster bed, an intimate seating area is flanked by arch top windows for added architectural detailing. The master bath cuts no corners when it comes to beauty. One of the two spaces in the home that has been extensively remodeled, the symmetrical space permeates Grecian appeal with a central Jacuzzi tub fully encased in creamy marble from Syverson Tile & Stone. Stately columns provide added interest while a metallic tiled back wall adds an illuminating affect and lends interest to the built-in niche and fireplace. This extensive facelift, by Hjellming Construction, incorporates even more modern trends. A large horizontal window floods in natural light while dual custom sinks with creamy glazed cabinets are nestled against a custom designed tiled wall by Sue Hitt, owner of New Interiors Design Co., in a trendy pattern that gives subtle depth to the monochromatic space.

Lower level bar and family area

SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2018
One cannot help but feel like royalty when walking up the curved open staircase to the upper level where an open balcony overlooks the formal living room. A catwalk allows for a small seating area while the remaining upper level contains three additional bedrooms with attached baths. When it comes to relaxing or having a bit of fun, the lower level is the place to be. Once again, the talents of Hjellming Construction were tapped to help create a unique pub-like feel. An expansive custom-built bar features arch top cabinets that seem to float thanks to the use of glass shelving, a mirror backsplash and puck lighting. A dual tiered bar features a distressed wood countertop that gives old world charm and blends with the various pub and wine inspired accent pieces. A window is finished off with a custom arch wood cornice with green stained glass and coordinating wood blinds. Leather barstools and adjacent hightop wood table allow for ample seating. And for a true centuries-old feel, the walls are once again faux finished in layers of copper tones. Enjoy a refreshment at the bar while watching the rear projector television or take a seat in the adjoining family area. The luxe distressed mahogany leather upholstery rivals the quaint bar for seating. To finish off the space, a wall of built-in bookcases is a showcase for accents and houses the surround sound. And when it’s time for playing games or simply needing additional space, an open concept gaming room with wood paneled walls and faux finished paint is the place to be. Hand scraped wood floors and distressed archway beams continue with the pub-like charm. Standing the test of time is a challenge for custombuilt homes. However, this two-story wonder is a testament to classic architecture and traditional design that has easily adapted to modern-day trends and will likely continue to live on in style for many decades to come. n

HOME DESIGN HACK
70s RELIC TO FARMHOUSE CHIC Renew dated brick fireplace for under $30!
Story & photos by Margaret Pennock
After
W
ithout a doubt, a fireplace can make a statement and has the opportunity to be a beautiful addition to your home. However, one that sports dated and dark 70s brick can be a bit overwhelming and oppressive, especially in a small room. Common in many 70s homes, fireplaces were large affairs frequently spanning from floor to ceiling and nearly taking up an entire wall. Because the craftsmanship of the masonry was usually impeccable, the issue today is mostly cosmetic.
Before
Fortunately there are many options to update brick from painting to completely changing the look by resurfacing with tile or stone. The choice to resurface this fireplace was eliminated because the amazing rough-hewn mantle was definitely staying and was literally embedded into the masonry. Removal would have ruined the fireplace. Painting the brick was also eliminated because of the opaque coverage of paint. The point was to enhance the natural beauty of the brick, not to cover it up. After some pretty thorough researching online as well as scouring Pinterest
72
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2018
for a bit of inspiration, the decision to limewash the brick was born. Limewashing is quite an old technique having been used for centuries. The technique actually soaks into porous surfaces instead of coating like a paint. Originally a combination of lime and water, there are now many different varieties that are pretty simple to obtain either premixed or to make. Make modern limewash from simply watering down paint. This is a popular method but can be very messy to work with. That was a definite con because excessive cleanup is never a good thing. Instead a premixed Valspar Limewash Glaze for just $12.99 a pint was used since it got great reviews online for its ease of use, no mixing, and beautiful results. Before starting, ensure the brick is clean and free of anything that might prevent the limewash from being absorbed. Start in an inconspicuous area in case you need to be able to hide it if you don’t like the look. Use an old paint brush because the rough texture of the brick ruins the bristles. One tip, rebrush after the glaze sits about 15 minutes to remove any trace of brush marks. All in all it took about four hours to cover the entire fireplace and just two pints of the glaze. You can add layers of the limewash to get a more opaque coverage but the single coat coverage still showed the natural variations of the brick, just much prettier and suitable for a modern farmhouse look! n
TECHNIQUE TIPS • Use a plastic drop cloth to protect your floors from splatter. • Use an old paintbrush to apply the glaze. • Work in sections, brick by brick, so you avoid overlap. • Rebrush the brick after the glaze has dried for about 15 minutes to remove any brush strokes. • When you’ve finished, stand back and look for uneven coverage. You can continue to apply glaze until you get the look you want or even out areas that stand out.

Many maladies that affect our hands are camped into two groups: nerve compression conditions and those where tendons are irritated or entrapped. Naturally, some conditions are a combination of these two major categories. People who suffer from these conditions could experience intense pain, numbness or other nerve-related weakness or a lack of sensation. Some of the more well-known conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, which can cause numbness, weakness, or discomfort, and happens because of nerve compression. What we generally call “tendonitis” is known by physicians to comprise a variety of tendon-irritating issues, some of which arise from misuse or poor posture, and others that are inherited or brought on by tendon
entrapment, mechanical irritation or chronic illnesses. “It’s a tapestry of systems at work, from circulatory to musculoskeletal to nerves and skin,” she said. “Since the personal experience of symptoms can vary, and may improve from one day to another, my patients’ descriptions of their problems along with the physical exams I conduct in clinic are vital to the process of developing an effective treatment plan.” DESCRIBING THE INEXPRESSIBLE Even for professionals, finding the right words to describe some of these elusive conditions can be challenging. “It can be tricky to pinpoint the symptoms and lock down the actual cause, and that’s why I explain to patients with many different symptoms that finding the right diagnoses is a journey, one we take together to get to the root of the problem,” she said. “Explaining to a doctor what feels off, or what hurts, can be really challenging, especially since it may have started as one issue and morphed into other problems over months or years.” An arsenal of treatment approaches is important for any patient. “But I don’t do a shotgun approach – we start with one problem, work out a solution and go on from there,” Drexler said. Managing a condition may begin with rest or physical therapy exercises, braces for hands and fingers, and may progress to surgery in some cases. When the process is applied and a patient on the verge of giving up finds relief, Drexler said this is what makes her daily practice so fulfilling. “There’s nothing more rewarding than meeting patients who have long struggled with hand problems and helping them find relief,” she said. “When I can get them to take another look with an open mind and ask what if there’s a way to fix this – we start that journey toward healing.” n

LET’S TALK ABOUT KIDS What You Need to Know About Ear Infections By Jennifer Dumke
D
oes your child struggle with constant ear infections? Do you frequent the doctor’s office and have tried numerous antibiotics only to still experience sleepless nights and face concerns about permanent damage to your child’s hearing? Then you join the countless number of parents and caregivers who suffer the same circumstances. Next to the common cold, ear infections in children rank high on the list of childhood illnesses. And while it may be common, that doesn’t mean it’s any less frustrating, concerning or problematic. From first-time caregivers and parents to those who have experience with ear infections in children, the bottom line is that each infection and treatment can vary. It’s important to first understand the basics of the infection to truly recognize the symptoms. “Ear infections are caused when the Eustachian tube that connects the
middle ear to the back of the throat gets swollen or blocked by congestion or mucus,” says Daniel Todd, MC, FACS of Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat. “The fluid then builds up in the middle ear making it prone to infection from bacteria and viruses. While most children eventually grow out of chronic ear infections as their ears develop with age, it’s still vital to take immediate action.” Common treatments range from simply “waiting it out,” prescription antibiotics and ear tubes. “Ear tubes are one of the most effective ways to treat chronic ear infections,” says Dr. Todd. “It consists of surgically inserting a tube into the middle ear to stabilize pressure.” And while not all children are candidates for ear tubes, for those who experience fluid build-up in both ears for more than three months and struggle with hearing, it can be life changing. “Having chronic fluid build-up can affect motor skills and even a child’s balance,” says Dr. Todd. By undergoing this simple procedure, ear tubes alleviate build-up by allowing air to pass into the child’s middle ear. This allows for proper ventilation and pressure release. “Often, children respond very well to this procedure and can resume normal activities in a short period of time,” says Dr. Todd. There’s also very little maintenance or follow-up appointments. “Most children grow out of their tubes,” he says, “but for some, the tubes remain in the ear and can cause damage to the ear drum.” He advises to always tell your physician if your child has ear tubes to ensure they are monitored and removed if necessary. Unfortunately, ear infections are becoming increasing prevalent in children under five years of age. Thankfully there are several procedures available. “When your child is struggling and in pain, it’s very concerning and stressful. Understanding the symptoms and seeking out treatments for chronic ear infections is vital for optimal ear health and overall improved quality of life,” stresses Dr. Todd. n

IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN MENOPAUSE AND GENETICS? Understanding Genetics’ Influence on Midlife Health By Sanford Health
E
very woman will experience menopause, but how and when she begins the natural process is different from person to person. This can be the result of a combination of factors that influence health. A number of these are out of a woman’s control, such as her genetics and family history, but others are due to personal choice. Still, it can be helpful for women to understand what contributes to the severity of their symptoms. Is it related to family history and genetics or due to lifestyle and environment? At Sanford Women’s Midlife Care Session on genetics, Rebecca Loman, MS, a certified genetic counselor at Sanford Health, provides some insight. “One of the questions we discuss is if there is a genetic component to menopause. Women often ask, ‘If my mom got menopause late or early, will I get menopause around the same age?’ But there is not a lot of information about genetics and menopause,” explains Loman. “While experts do think there is a hereditary factor, we do not have good risk data providing answers,” continues Loman. “There are some statistics indicating families have matching timelines for the onset of menopause, but we do not have data explaining if this is due to genetics or because families commonly share the same environment and lifestyle.”
80
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2018
THE VALUE OF FAMILY HISTORY As a woman ages, her risk for certain conditions increases. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other conditions require closer observation. Loman offers women additional information into the common diseases that are monitored during midlife and how genetics and family history can play a role. “Family history is one of the best tools for understanding your risk factors. It explores how genetics, environment and lifestyle all contribute,” says Loman. “Genetic counselors turn a family history into a pedigree, which is a genetic version of a family tree. This information is invaluable for doctors when they care for patients now and in the future.” Loman continues, “We discuss how family history affects the woman, her health and her family. For example, if a woman has a family history of breast cancer, she may need additional monitoring or earlier screenings. She may also benefit from genetic testing to see if it’s hereditary. Her family members may have an increased risk as well, so we discuss how this can impact them.” GENETICS IS NOT EVERYTHING Genetics does not answer every question, but there is a benefit to completing a family history and understanding how genetics can influence midlife health. “Knowledge is power. Genetics, family history and personal history do not provide all the answers. It may not change things moving forward, but it provides information she would not know otherwise,” concludes Loman. “By understanding her risk factors, she has better awareness, can make different lifestyle choices and get monitored more closely if needed.” n

REVOLUTIONARY TREATMENT PROVEN TO REDUCE CHRONIC HEADACHES Visions Eye Care & Vision Therapy Center – One of 15 practices in the nation to offer innovative neurolens® technology It’s never pleasant to experience a pounding headache. Unfortunately for millions of people it’s a frequent and sometimes daily occurrence. One of the most common and little-known causes of these headaches is how a person’s eyes work together. Our two eyes are meant to work as a team, and when the eyes don’t align properly, the work your brain does to compensate for this can cause headaches. Staring at a computer or mobile device for several hours during the day makes the issue even more severe and painful. Current treatment of this type of headache consists mostly of over the counter medications, which are often times ineffective and can be dangerous with overuse. Recently, an exciting new therapeutic lens known as neurolens® has been developed to safely and effectively treat these vision related headaches.

problems, just to name a few. The binocular vision system is extremely important in how a person functions, and if that system is not aligned properly, people will become symptomatic. Neurolenses are designed to correct this misalignment and safely and effectively eliminate these symptoms.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY VISION IS CAUSING MY HEADACHES? The easiest way to find out if your headaches are visually related is to make an appointment at Visions Eye Care. You will be asked to answer a questionnaire to determine the extent of your symptoms. This questionnaire can also be found at Visions’ website, under “Digital Vision.” You will then be tested with the SightSync® device and a series of binocular vision tests are performed to determine if a misalignment exists in your visual system. At that point your doctor will let you know if neurolenses will help reduce your symptoms and lead to more comfortable vision. Because neurolenses look just like any other glasses lenses, they can be put into any frame you prefer. They can be made into sunglasses, transition lenses, bifocals, and computer glasses.

CYNTHIA MICKELSON Advocate for the Voiceless
By Natalie Slieter Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography Hair and Makeup by Chantelle Duncan, Licensed Cosmetologist
C
ynthia Mickelson has years of experience as an attorney and using her legal skills. She attended the University of South Dakota to study journalism, but wanted to have a backup plan. Her backup plan of law school turned into the law career she has had for the last 20 years. She has been a South Dakota Supreme Court judicial law clerk, draftsperson, associate attorney and support staff, and continues to use her legal career as a grant writer and advocate. What she really finds rewarding is the volunteer work she has completed and is currently involved with in the Sioux Falls community. She has made it her mission to be an advocate for those who do not have a voice, especially children. She and her family have been fortunate with the opportunities in their lives so she feels the pressing need to help others get a leg up in the Sioux Falls community. She was born in Pasadena, CA, the hometown of her mother, and moved to Miller, SD as a young child, where her father was from originally. Volunteering and giving back to the community was modeled to her at a young age. She grew up watching her parents start charitable foundations as well as actively volunteering in multiple community and statewide organizations. Cynthia says her parents are her role models and instilled in her the idea to contribute her time and resources to help the community. “My parents have always been community-minded. It’s the normal in my life,” Cynthia explained. “I like to help others and I like to solve problems or issues, so volunteering provides me an outlet to use my talents and the reward is seeing a child smile or seeing them succeed.”

Cynthia and her husband, Representative Mark Mickelson, have three teenage sons, George, David and Charlie. The family enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, skiing and traveling cross-country together, occasionally in a rented RV. She smiles as she speaks about the great memories created as a family. Volunteering together has also become a family endeavor. Continuing to meet the needs in the community is of utmost importance to Cynthia and Mark, along with exemplifying this to their sons. She and her husband have strived over the years to show the importance of giving back, which meant bringing their sons along to various volunteer opportunities and encouraging them to volunteer on their own, like working towards becoming Eagle Scouts and participating with church youth group activities. Cynthia’s resumé of volunteer experience is a mile long with many accomplishments to look back on. There was her stint on the South Dakota Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and her time as a board member for the Helpline Center. She was a board member for the Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center and also assisted in the Pavilion’s accreditation with the American Association of Museums. She completed various duties at Robert Frost Elementary School, was a board member for The Children’s Home Society for many years, and was treasurer for the Lincoln High School Booster Club. Currently, she is active with the Edith Sanford Advisory Committee for Sanford Health, focusing on spreading the word nationally on breast health and the research conducted by Sanford. She is Co-Chair for the Volunteers of America campaign for Homeplace, which hopes to build a 21-unit apartment building by Roosevelt High School to assist the approximately 100 homeless youth ages 16-21. She is the Mentor/Mentee Program Liaison with the PTA for Patrick Henry Middle School, encouraging participation by coordinating social events, such as breakfast events or root beer float socials with bingo. She was elected last year to the vacant seat on the Sioux Falls School Board. Cynthia started her term with the Sioux Falls School District in July. Even though she is an elected official, she thinks of herself as an active and involved member of the Sioux Falls community. She is part of the group overseeing 24,000 students and 3,000 employees. She has numerous goals for her three-year term, but advocating for forgotten demographics and those without a voice is her main concern. 88

Most of Cynthia’s volunteer work has been in the education sector or working to help children. Her sons have all been fortunate with the opportunities they have had and she wants other children to have those same opportunities. Knowing there are children in tough situations, at no fault of their own, motivates her to continue advocating for them and to see them succeed. She believes everyone should invest in the public school district as it is a community investment and wants everyone to be educated on the issues, even if they do not have children attending a Sioux Falls public school. It’s important for the youth and the strength of our community as a whole, she says. “I feel that it is our role in our society to assist all youth, especially those who are not lucky enough to have positive role models or environments to shape their lives or to assist in guiding them in their path of life,” Cynthia encouraged. “We need to give them hope; when they lose hope, we lose them.” Cynthia is passionate about what she does and does not hesitate to encourage others to also give of their time and resources. She believes the Sioux Falls community needs to be educated on the various needs in the area and then decide how they can use their talents and passions to better the lives of other people. To see changes, Cynthia encourages others to step out of their comfort zones to come up with solutions. She hopes that people can be engaged in what is going on in the community, to offer hope to those without it and to see positive changes in the Sioux Falls area. The years and effort she has given to volunteering comes from a place of truly caring for the well-being of others in Sioux Falls and South Dakota as a whole, not of obligation. “I hope people will break out of their routine and examine where they could be helpful in continuing the success and generosity that makes Sioux Falls a wonderful city,” Cynthia encouraged. n

GUIDING THE JOURNEY The Story of an Oncology Nurse By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Margaret Pennock
N
o one wants to hear the dreaded “C” word when they are visiting with their doctor. A diagnosis of cancer brings with it a wealth of emotion and uncertainty about the journey ahead and questions begin to bubble up in the mind of the patient: Will I survive? How long do I have? How is my treatment plan going to affect me? With all of the unknown variables, it can be difficult to navigate the journey ahead. Thankfully there are nurses like Melanie Miller, a Medical Oncology Nurse with Avera McKennan, that serve as a guide to a patient that is beginning their cancer journey. What Melanie loves most about being an oncology nurse is being invited along in that journey from diagnosis, through treatment, to a cure or continued treatment, survivorship or the end of life. Melanie shares, “You truly get to see all spectrums of vulnerability, emotions, tenacity and the strength of patients and families. Being able to make a difference in the lives of the patients I care for serves as my daily inspiration and one of the many
reasons I love my job. It is humbling and eye-opening when someone thanks you for just doing your job and helping them on their journey.” The Jorgen Yde (JY6) Foundation’s Nurses Dinner, the foundation’s gala event, honors nurses and raises funds for pediatric cancer research. Each year the foundation honors and recognizes an outstanding nurse that serves as the comforting, knowledgeable guide throughout a patient’s cancer journey. It was Jorgen’s wish to repay the love, kindness, and generosity of his family, friends, nurses, and doctors who went through this fight with him. The Jorden Yde (JY6) Foundation’s Nurses Dinner is a celebration of Jorgen’s wish. This year’s winner Melanie Miller has been presented this special Nurse of the Year award by the Yde family. Melanie Millers is the Nursing Supervisor for the AMG Medical Oncology and Hematology Clinic. Melanie is truly humbled by the nomination and considers herself lucky that she has worked and continues to work with some of the best nurses and doctors in the city. What is exciting about working in oncology is the evolution of patient care. “You are always learning about new treatments and different ways to deliver the best care to patients. I am always challenged in oncology. I have been a nurse for a long time,” Melanie says smiling, “but I am learning something new every day from patients and staff around me.” Melanie knew she wanted to be a nurse when she was growing up on her family farm. It seemed as though they were always “nursing” the animals. It gave her an interest in science and the desire to care for people in a profession that is ever changing. Along with her over 30 years in nursing, Melanie is the proud wife of Randy Miller for 28 years and the mother of four wonderful children Marissa (25), Shannon (24), Cody (22) and Jared (19). With the support of her closeknit family, Melanie lives by the quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” It is through her commitment as a nurse, a mother, and wife that Melanie was nominated by her peers and was awarded this year’s Nurse of the Year from the Jorden Yde (JY6) Foundation. n

SHANTELLE WITTSTRUCK: WOMEN IN THE OUTDOORS By Stacey Kracht Photos by Hannah Stonehouse-Hudson
W
omen on Ice Angler Project (WIAP), founded and run by Barb Carey, is a media event project to help promote women’s involvement in ice fishing activities through products, education, events, and more. Shantel Wittstruck is one of six women chosen to participate in Women on Ice and was asked to join two years ago. As an outdoor enthusiast, public speaker, and contributor to Adventuress Magazine, Dakota Country Magazine, and Stonehouse Creative, Wittstruck is also pro staff for CLAM, Vexilar, and Northland Tackle, presenting at several trade show events throughout the year on open-water fishing, ice fishing and hunting. Significant decline in the percentage of South Dakota residents who hunt or fish has been noted by local outdoors organizations, increasing the average age of people with South Dakota licenses for hunting and/or fishing. Because of this, other local opportunities for women to enjoy
the outdoors have been created, including programs that South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks hosts, like Harvest South Dakota Hunt, Cook, and Share. The SD Hunt, Cook, and Share program gives people an opportunity to hunt, shows them how to cook and prepare the game, and encourages sharing the prepared meal with others. Programs like this are aimed at educating and encouraging those who haven’t had previous experience and may not know where to start with enjoying the outdoors through hunting and fishing.

Wittstruck recently founded Outdoor Women of the Midwest to provide opportunities for women to communicate, establish new friendships, learn, grow, and share experiences of the outdoors – educating, inspiring, sharing and empowering women of all ages and skill level in the outdoors. “If a single mom has kids interested in hunting or fishing, she may not be able to teach these lifelong lessons on her own,” says Wittstruck. Families that have little to no experience fishing or hunting may be wondering where to start. Outdoor Women of the Midwest, WIAP, and other organizations become a vital resource to educate, create curiosity and excitement, and provide opportunities in these areas. Fishing and hunting build memories that last a lifetime and teach lessons that can only be learned on the water, on the ice, in the field, or in the woods. Because of this, educational opportunities are becoming more important. Wittstruck shares, “When we take time to share our passion of the outdoors with others, there is an increased possibility that the experience will be positive and they will also learn to love the outdoors and share it with others.” n

A FAMILY’S JOURNEY FOR ANSWERS By Sanford Health
K
im Huitink was a freshman in high school when her father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. The family was devastated; an autopsy showed he had passed from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease where part of the heart muscle cells enlarge, thickening the walls of the ventricles. “Our family physician recommended the entire family get an echocardiogram to test for the disease. My aunt and cousin were diagnosed, but my brother and I did not show HCM,” explains Kim. “Our doctor told us you either had it or you didn’t, so we shouldn’t have to worry.” For the next decade and a half, Kim’s life continued without giving HCM much thought. That is, until her son was born in 2000. Before leaving the hospital, her husband asked the pediatrician if there was any need for their son to be tested. The pediatrician recommended that not only their son be tested but also Kim. She was retested, yet nothing was seen in her or her son’s echocardiogram. The same resulted when her daughter was born and tested a few years later. Kim and her children were placed on a five-year monitoring track with no symptoms or occurrences.
The Huitink Family
However, in 2011, Kim started noticing some reflux. She went to her provider and
was given medication, but over the next few weeks her symptoms became substantially worse. “I went back in and an irregular heartbeat on the EKG sent me to the ER, where I met Dr. Tom Stys from the Sanford Heart Hospital. I had full cardiac work up completed, and Dr. Stys told me I had the start of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,” Kim says.
Nobody does “I do” like we do!
Now, Kim knew she had HCM, but what about her children? They were being monitored, but nothing was showing up and hadn’t been for years. Her children’s pediatric cardiologist at Sanford Health recommended genetic testing to know more conclusively. Kim decided to test herself first. She met with Kristen DeBerg, MS, CGC, genetic counselor at Sanford Heart Hospital. Through genetic testing, a mutation related to HCM was discovered. “We tested my kids, and they tested positive for the same mutation,” Kim explains. “Now we are in a waiting period, figuring out where we need to go from here.” Kim adds, “Knowing we are all carriers of the gene and the potential for it to develop is better than guessing ‘do we need to watch for it or not?’ There are so many things that can be done to monitor. Just knowing I’m being watched and my kids are being monitored for anything that could go wrong is a better alternative to the unexpected happening.” n
