LOVE ROOTED IN The Love Story of Dane and Anna Yde

Cancer is a disease that can lead to many different emotions and outcomes. Some are happy and some are sad but all are life-changing. For Dane and Anna, their individual journey with cancer lead them to each other and started a love story that will last their lifetime.

Dane is the founder of JY6, a foundation that raises money for pediatric cancer and research in memory of his brother that passed away from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Each year the JY6 foundation hosts a fundraising Nurses Dinner to honor nurses and raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The event features a speaker, usually a childhood cancer survivor that can share a personal story. In April of 2017, that speaker was Anna.

Anna knows first hand the struggle that Dane’s family went through because she too fought leukemia at the age of 7 and became a survivor. This victory over her childhood cancer called her to her career as a pediatric nurse, making her the perfect candidate to speak at Dane’s event. The connection was made thanks to Anna’s godmother and aunt whose sister gave Anna’s contact information to Dane.

Anna and Dane talked off and on leading up to the event and added each other on Facebook. Dane remembers, “ I thought she was cute when I added her on social media, but when she showed up at the event in her red dress I thought she looked beautiful. I was really amazed by her story and all that she has overcome in her life and I knew that I wanted to get to know her better.” Anna’s first impression of Dane was that he was super nice but his appearance without facial hair made her think he was 6 years younger than she was. Anna remembers thinking “He looks very handsome in his suit as he approached me and my family to thank us for coming. He was genuinely kind.” Anna being a state championship high school golfer told Dane that she would be interested in coming back for the JY6 golf event. Dane suggested they try and get a practice round in before the event and Anna agreed. This lead to a first date at a concert in Denver and rolled into a weekend-long date that included a Rockies game and meeting friends.

With strong family values, both Dane and Anna wanted a traditional engagement and wedding. When Dane was

getting ready to propose he asked permission from Anna’s entire family including her dad, mom, and siblings. The proposal was a romantic fairytale just like their wedding. Dane shares, “I chose the Starlight Room in the Downtown Holiday Inn because it used to be a rotating restaurant where many romantic dates and marriage proposals took place. The starlight room was decommissioned in the early 80s and the restaurant closed soon after. I wanted it to be special. We were the first couple to get engaged in that room in over three decades.” Dane lured Anna to the Starlight Room under the false pretense that they were attending a friend’s Christmas party. Entering the room Dane escorted Anna into a circle of soft candles and a musical duet waiting to serenade them. In the middle of their dance, Dane stopped and got down on one knee and proposed. Anna excitedly accepted. Dane surprised her again with drinks at a local wine bar where both of their families were waiting to celebrate their engagement.

A year later Anna and Dane married November 24, 2018. Their wedding was rich with family values and tradition. They chose November 24, because it was the birthday of Anna’s greatgrandmother whom she was named after. Dane and Anna embraced tradition by not seeing each other or speaking to

each prior to their ceremony. This also meant that they didn’t do the popular “first look photo.” Seeing each other for the first time walking down the aisle enhanced the excitement and both agree it was their most memorable moment of the day.

Surrounded by a wedding party of family, Anna’s sister was the maid of honor and Dane’s sister was the best woman, they exchanged vows and rings. Dane’s ring was his late father’s ring and Anna was wearing her great-grandmother’s ring on her right hand.

The music that celebrated their love during their ceremony was a mix of traditional hymns and popular songs sung by Elizabeth Hunstad and Company. Immediately following the ceremony the wedding party and guests went to Minnehaha Country Club for the reception. The romantic cast of navy, dusty rose, and lush greenery set the stage for a traditional sit-down meal that turned into an evening of dancing the night away with friends and family to the music of the Goodroad Band.

Their traditional wedding along with their roots of strong family values and being cancer warriors serve as the foundation of a love that they believe will stand the test of time. n

A UNIQUE WEDDING WITH

Fun Surprises

Matthew and Mikaela Rohner were married October 13, 2018 on a beautiful fall day at The Canton Barn. They had many traditional elements to their wedding day, but also a few unique and fun surprises for their guests.

Mikaela and Matthew did all the planning for their wedding. Their wedding style was rustic yet elegant and the barn fit in perfectly for what they envisioned for the day. They were able to get ready, have their ceremony – all of nine minutes – and reception at the barn, which Mikaela says was convenient for the whole wedding party and their guests.

Their color palette included navy and burgundy, Mikaela’s favorite colors. They added touches of gold and grey, such as in the vest Matthew wore under his suit, allowing the other colors to pop.

Décor included lanterns on tables lit with LED candles and faux fall leaves. The Rohners also decorated their venue with flower arrangements, like bouquets and garlands, from The Wildflower, a small family-based business out of Montrose.

“The flowers were incredible,” Mikaela said. “They only do one wedding per weekend, so they were focused on making my flowers perfect.”

Matthew and Mikaela knew their day wouldn’t be complete if they didn’t include their pets – Meredith, their two and half year-old hedgehog and Oliver, their six-month-old Australian shepherd. Meredith was in the bridal suite with Mikaela while she got ready for her big day; Oliver was a guest at the ceremony and even stayed for the reception.

The big surprise for their guests was a performance by Matthew’s sister who is skilled in fire dancing; she can also eat and breathe the fire. Mikaela said that was special for the whole family because they had never seen her perform. However, the smoke from the fire caused the fire alarms in the barn to go off.

“Everyone was laughing,” Mikaela shared. “The staff was running and opening windows so the sprinklers wouldn’t go off.”

One of Mikaela’s favorite moments from the day was Matthew’s vows. He worked in the story of how they met; they both attended the University of South Dakota, but rarely attended football games, except for the USD vs. South Dakota State University game, where they met in 2015.

Other sentimental elements included using Mikaela’s grandparents cake topper and having Matthew’s mother say the prayer before the meal, something that made his mother tear up.

“Everything went well for the both of us,” Mikaela said. “It was everything I could have ever asked for it to be and everything I dreamed of it being.” n

Five Reasons to Take Your Wedding on the Road

After popping the big question, many engaged couples today consider having a destination wedding. After all, who wouldn’t get excited at the prospect of traveling somewhere unique and beautiful to get hitched? But it can be unnerving to go through with a destination wedding. Will loved ones be supportive? How much will it cost?

If you’re wondering whether or not to have a destination wedding, here are five reasons to take your big day on the road.

1. LESS PLANNING

With a destination wedding, the only thing to do is choose a destination. “Once you book your accommodations and airfare, most everything else is taken care of by the resort,” said Sonya Parker, Travel Consultant with All About Travel in Sioux Falls. “A lot of big resorts have wedding coordinators and offer packages that include everything you could want, so all you have to do is show up.”

2. MORE AFFORDABLE

The average wedding in the U.S. costs $35,329, according to CNN. Destination weddings cost between $10K-$20K. This usually includes a week-long stay, meals, activities, and the wedding ceremony, which is usually free when you book a certain number of nights, said Parker. Sioux

Falls residents Taylor and Kimberly Choudek got married in Custer, South Dakota at the State Game Lodge. “We wanted something out of the norm but something that wouldn’t break the bank,” Taylor said.

3. QUALITY VS. QUANTITY

When a wedding takes hours of travel to attend and extra money on your guest’s part, it will weed out some people from attending. The people who make the trek to attend your wedding will be the most important people in your lives. “You’ll get to spend way more quality time with the people that really matter to you,” said Parker.

4. NEW PLACES TO EXPLORE

You can start your marriage off on an exciting note, by filling your wedding week with new adventures, whether scuba diving with your friends or going on a group hike. At the Choudek’s wedding reception, a buffalo sauntered by the reception hall adding a little extra excitement.

HONEYMOON INCLUDED

With a destination wedding you can extend your stay to include the honeymoon, said Parker. “Most resorts offer some sort of package that encourages having your wedding and honeymoon at the same resort by giving discounts if you do, which will save money in the long run,” she said.

Dear Mother of the Bride,

Weddings can be blissful but being the mother of the bride can be blistering. Stereotypes haven’t helped your image and neither have dated etiquette traditions.

And then there is the self-imposed stress. According Ilene Beckerman, author and satirist of the book Mother of the Bride, childbirth is easier than being mother of the bride. Her observations - mothers of the bride can do nothing right, except open their checkbooks and shut their mouths. That a mother can’t help wondering what happened to the adorable little girl she once knew, “How she stood on a kitchen chair and sang all the words to every song in the third-grade play but was too shy to even move her lips on stage.”

Yes, planning the wedding is a roller coaster of emotions and so many thoughts swirl in your head. How do you cope without turning into momzilla? Just know you aren’t alone. Here are a few thoughts you and every other mother of the bride are probably experiencing:

“I’m never going to find anything to wear!”

Every mother wants to feel beautiful, comfortable and confident in the dress she has chosen for her daughter’s wedding. Include your daughter in choosing the right dress. Plan a day with her perhaps three months before the wedding. Keep in mind that the outfit should match the style and formality of the event and the color should complement but not exactly match the hues of the maids of honor. You’ll be in the pictures, so your “look” should blend with the group. And don’t stress about those “trouble spots” – just choose accordingly.

“How much is this costing?”

The cost of the wedding is always a concern. It is one of the first things that should be addressed after your daughter gets engaged. Just how much can you as a parent contribute towards her wedding? Staying in the loop about money and spending as well as staying on budget means no surprises.

“Really, I can’t throw my daughter a bridal shower?”

Traditional etiquette says that a family member of the bride or groom should not host the shower so as not to appear you are asking for a gift. But times are changing. Mothers of the bride host or co-host bridal showers these days. So, yes. It’s okay.

“My baby is getting married!”

It’s an emotional journey to be the mother of the bride so it is ever important to be present. Delegate those last-minute tasks. You may even choose to have your own personal attendant just like the bride. Leave the camera at home. Be in the photos with your daughter, not taking them. Cherish the old memories as they surface. There will be many. Give the gift of your time and attention; let yourself be part of these new, once-in-a-lifetime memories and savor every moment. On her wedding day you will be taking on a new job as a valuable resource, on standby, to help guide your daughter through the maze of married life. n

Nutrition to Support YOUR Healthy Body Type

You’re unique and so is your body type. Your goals, fitness and nutrition are also unique to you. Depending on your body type, a different combination of macronutrients will best help you reach your specific goals. Body type has been generalized into three categories: ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph (although it’s common to be a combination). You’re born with your body type, based on skeletal frame (small, medium, large), which can’t be changed. Your body composition (muscle mass/body fat), however, can be changed through nutrition and fitness. Read on to discover what nutrition suggestions will help support your healthy body type.

ECTOMORPH

An ectomorph has a small frame size with little body fat and muscle mass, and typically long and lean. They have difficulty gaining weight and muscle due to a fast metabolism, which slows with age and can result in unhealthy body fat gain. The best nutrition to support a healthy ectomorph body would be one that’s higher in carbohydrates and calories:

40-50% carbohydrate, 25% protein, and 25-35% fat

In order to gain weight or muscle, (fitness also plays a role), an addition of at least 500 calories will be necessary. Eating a variety of whole foods every 2-4 hours will ensure a healthy body.

• Carbohydrates: oats, quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes and potatoes

• Variety of fruit and vegetables for high fiber

• Watch portions of fats: nuts and seeds, avocado

MESOMORPH

A mesomorph body type is typically a person with a medium build and frame. This body type is typically athletic and more muscular, which means they may need more calories due to muscles burning more calories than fat. Balanced macronutrients, mostly equal, tend to support this body type very well.

30-40% carbohydrate, 30-40% protein, and 20-30% fat

• Protein: Try including a small amount in every meal.

• Carbohydrate to include: fruits, vegetables, whole grains

• Healthy fats: coconut or olive oils, avocado, nuts and seeds

• More muscle = more calories needed for fuel (higher basal metabolic rate) so include small snacks before and after activity to help repair muscles

ENDOMORPH

An endomorph body type is characterized by higher body fat and less muscle (not necessarily overweight) and gains weight more easily. This body type has a slower metabolism, so excess calories are more likely to convert to fat. A greater distribution of calories from protein and less carbohydrates and fats is best:

25-30% carbohydrate, 35-40% protein, and 30-40% fat

• Carbohydrates: vegetables, potatoes, legumes, whole grains, and fruits

• Limit simple carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and pasta. Fruit should be enjoyed in moderation.

It is common to be a combination of body types, but your eating and exercise habits will identify your primary type by how you respond to those factors. Regardless of your body type, a nutrition plan that supports a healthy lifestyle, which is one that is maintainable and works for the unique person you are is the best! n

Hello, southwest Sioux Falls neighbors! A new restaurant is just down the block. 22Ten Kitchen Cocktails opened at 2210 West 69th Street in November, to the cheers of the eatery-starved neighborhood.

22Ten Kitchen Cocktails comes from the WR Hospitality series of locally-owned, unique eating spots like the All Day Café, TapHouse 41, RedRossa Neapolitan Pizza, and the Phillips Avenue Diner. WR Hospitality’s restaurants are known for unique menu items developed by local culinary talent, and each of their establishments have a comfortable ambiance perfect for their setting.

Southwest Sioux Falls neighbors will feel right at home in the open style layout, with views from the front of the room right back to the kitchen. Stainless steel, metal art, and sea glass-colored lamps make the space feel intimate enough for a special evening, yet open enough to meet up with a larger group of friends.

The menu, developed by local Executive Chef Joel Wallace, is “American Eclectic,” and focuses on artisan plates and local favorites like Duck Soba.

The bar features approachable, familiar beers and classic cocktails reminiscent of the past, like the Cuba Libra, Gin Fizzes, Tom Collins, and the Long Island Iced Tea, all prepared with house-made sweet & sour. Talking Finances Before Going down the Aisle

The “I Do’s” are around the corner when the question of combining bank accounts is posed. It’s a question that could make the happiest of couples cringe.

Years ago, it was standard for married couples to have joint accounts and use credit cards as a couple. Today, people are getting married older and can be financially established before marriage, making merging finances once they are married a complicated issue.

“Every situation is different,” said Richelle Hofer, Wealth Advisor for Cornerstone Financial Solutions. “There are different solutions and it can depend on the spouses’ financial footing, and how saving and spending habits differ.”

Hofer suggests couples get money issues on the table and have a plan. “Having a good financial management

plan is paramount, because without a plan there is so much left to discuss and negotiate. Having a plan in advance on how to handle money is key,” she said.

Establishing a joint checking account to pay joint bills usually works well, said Hofer. “What I’ve seen work well is, as a couple, define what your joint bills are, such as mortgage, electricity grocery budget, etcetera. Then establish an account that only pays those bills. From there, decide how much each will contribute to that account. Couples often think of splitting the bills fifty-fifty, but usually a pro rata calculation works better. For instance, if one spouse makes 60 percent of the combined income, that person would contribute sixty percent of the money needed to cover joint bills.”

There are advantages to being joint owners on accounts, said Hofer, “In general, it’s best to be joint owners on everything when you’re married. When you own an account jointly, that asset automatically passes to the surviving joint owner without probate or legal proceedings if one of the owners passes away.”

Regarding debt, couples should discuss that prior to marriage, said Hofer. “Be sure to discuss your individual debts early in the relationship especially if you carry a large student loan,” she said. “Is your spouse okay with paying the debt as a joint bill or does your spouse feel like you should be responsible for the payment by yourself?”

While blending finances isn’t an easy decision or one to ignore, talking it out is important to keep a marriage healthy, said Hofer. “Finances should be something that brings you together, a source of stability and joy while reinforcing your marriage.” n

LEGALLY BINDING Five Things You Need to Know Before You Say “I Do”

Your wedding is near. Yes, it is an exciting time, but you also need to know marriage will affect your legal and financial status. Amanda Engel, attorney with the Duncan Law Firm, offers five important “To Do” items every bride-to-be needs to take care of and understand before she gets married:

PURCHASE A MARRIAGE LICENSE.

Prior to getting married, you must obtain a marriage license from a Register of Deeds in a South Dakota County. To obtain a license you must present either a drivers’ license or a copy of a birth certificate. The cost is $40.

THE MARRIAGE MUST OCCUR WITH 20 DAYS OF PURCHASING THE LICENSE.

Once you are married, the individual who solemnizes the marriage must return the license to the Register of Deeds within 10 days. If not, there will be no record of your marriage.

DISCUSS DEBTS, ASSETS, AND OTHER FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS.

One of the major causes of divorce is finances or financial problems. Talking about debts, assets and finances prior to marriage can allow couples to avoid financial problems in the future and set themselves up for long-term success. Obtaining a clear picture of each other’s financial conditions creates an opportunity to openly discuss how major financial decisions will be handled during the course of the marriage. The beginning of the marriage is the perfect opportunity to work on “financial togetherness.”

CONSIDER A PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT.

An honest discussion about debts, assets and other financial obligations will open the door in helping you consider whether or not a prenuptial agreement is necessary. A prenuptial agreement is a legal document that allows couples to spell out their separate assets before marriage in order to prevent arguments or disputes over who owns what, should

divorce happen. Prenuptial contracts affect one or both spouses’ rights and obligations during and after marriage. If a prenuptial contract is set up, both parties are required to sign it.

UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LEGALLY MARRIED.

Becoming legally married changes the legal status of both parties, giving each spouse new rights and obligations. Marriage allows you to be entitled to a share of marital property accumulated during the course of the marriage. This includes the right to any property and income accrued by your spouse during your marriage. You owe your spouse a fiduciary duty regarding finances and property.

Spouses also owe each other the duty to keep confidential communications private. The marital communication privilege or “spouse privilege” prevents either spouse from disclosing confidential marital communications.

You also will be responsible for any marital debt incurred during the course of the marriage.

DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO CHANGE YOUR NAME.

Once you are married you have the right to decide whether or not you will take your spouse’s name. If you choose to take your spouse’s name, you will need to change your social security card, driver’s license, bank accounts, debit and credit cards and other miscellaneous accounts such as utilities, cable, internet, passport and travel documents. In order to allow the corresponding entity to change your name, you will need to obtain certified copies of your marriage license.

“Marriage is one of the most important decisions you will make,” says Engel.

“Besides happiness of marrying your partner, you should also be aware of the rights and legal responsibilities that come along with walking down the aisle. If you have questions about marriage requirements, it’s helpful to discuss the issue with a family law attorney who can help you take the necessary steps.” n

After nearly 30 years living in their custom built split foyer on the east side of Sioux Falls, homeowners Mike and Judy Connor were ready for a change. But that didn’t mean address. “We love our home and neighborhood and didn’t want to move,” said Judy. “But we also knew it was time for a change.” Laurie McDowell, owner of Laurie McDowell Interior Design, recently expanded her design business to Sioux Falls from Minneapolis, and she brought 25 years of design experience with her. Once Laurie was on board, the trio went to work updating their family home.

With Laurie’s expertise at hand, the first step in the transformation was taking a full inventory of the Connor’s existing pieces. “We really appreciated that Laurie took the time to work our family heirlooms and costly wood pieces into the plan,” Judy noted. “This not only made our home more unique and special, but it was a real cost savings.”

Starting in the bright and open living room, crisp walls provide the perfect neutral background for a variety of colorful, local art. “We already owned a few pieces,” said Mike, when referring to the piece titled Thelonious Monk by local artist Bruce Preheim. Working with watercolor herself, Judy proudly displays her own musical inspired pieces. Both art and music lovers, the Connors take great pride in their home, and their decor is a direct reflection of their personalities and lifestyle. “Laurie really tapped into something that we love,” said Judy, “and that was art.”

For Laurie, working with the Connors was just as enjoyable. “My style of the moment is always the client’s style,” she said. “It’s all about them and their needs and desires for their home.” A fellow lover of art, the process of creating a bright and colorful space was enjoyable for all. “Art plays a very large role in helping create a room,” adds Laurie. “The pieces I select typically contain several colors.” Opting for neutral walls and utilizing existing oak floors, color was added in the accessories. “Their home had been full of darker browns and some aged furniture,” she said. “They really wanted to freshen and lighten it up and add the color they had been lacking.”

A bright area rug sits underneath a large round wood coffee table, while a crisp, white sofa nestles bold, printed pillows. A signature look for this artistic couple can be seen in the variety of lighting. In

the living room, three lamps lend to the bevy of light that fills the space but vary in style, shape and color. An open bay window is kept open and bright with wood blinds while dual side chairs add a relaxed feel. Family heirlooms are dotted throughout the home and carry with it both style and a unique story. “This is a kite from Japan that we already owned and Laurie thought it would be nice to have it framed and put on display,” said Mike. Finishing out the space, an original from Laurie herself, is a favorite for Judy and is displayed in a contemporary black frame above a marble top dresser. “I love that the base pieces are quiet and then we let the pillows, rugs and art do some special sprinkling of magic and beauty to make the room fabulous,” adds Laurie.

Moving into the dining room, the eye is immediately drawn to the contemporary sphered light fixture. With the aid of Laurie, both Judy and Mike were drawn to the artistic styling of the light and its contrast with the existing retro furniture. For added color, a tangerine and cobalt blue area rug anchors the space and sets it apart from the living room. Patio doors allow great light to come in and also display a wonderful view of nature.

The kitchen was given a hint of colorful updates to ensure its design flowed throughout. Custom cabinets feature a rich, dark hue with rope accents while black granite countertops and a cobbled tile backsplash complete the traditional look. A large window and recessed lights allow ample illumination to the warm space and showcase the bold printed area rug.

Even though the original plans were to redecorate only the main living areas, Judy expanded the project to the master bedroom. Neutral carpet and taupe walls enhance the bright tones and mixed patterns found in the bedding. A mod style light fixture once again pushed the design boundaries for the Connors and is now a favorite. “I just love all the different lighting,” said Judy. Hints of rich medium colored wood pieces and even more heirlooms are precisely worked into the new design. “Laurie would often times give us a lot of choices. We appreciated having the flexibility.”

Finishing out the upper level, a guest bedroom carries through with the modern and bold design. A buttery yellow bedspread floats above a colorful area rug while a mix of patterned pillows enhance the eclectic style. A sea shell pendant light is an immediate conversation piece that is also a favorite for the Connors. A simple fabric Roman shade covers the window for light control. Dual nightstands feature modern bright lime green lamps with neutral shades; the perfect complement to the surrounding tones.

Leading to the lower level, guests are greeted by a black painted cabinet accented by colorful art and accessories. Because the lower level has not been redecorated, Laurie was challenged to make the transition from the main level to the lower level smooth. “We spent so much time on the main level that it looked considerably different from the lower level,” she explained. Thankfully, the talents of hiring a true professional to update their home proved invaluable as she took time to intersperse colorful pillows, rugs, and wall hangings to help make the lower level come alive.

Despite the darker tones, the Connors enjoyed making the most of the space and utilizing existing heirlooms and pieces in addition to color. The lower level can easily be deemed a music-inspired haven. Mike, a local musician who began playing guitar at age of 12 and is well-known in the community for his musical talents, can not only practice but relax with the family in this area of their home. Judy, who taught music and performs locally with her husband, enjoys the casual space for relaxing and looks forward to hosting gatherings with friends and family. “I loved getting to know the Connors better so that I could facilitate them in expressing their personalities and emphasizing their interests and hobbies throughout their home,” expressed Laurie.

A large wine colored leather upholstered sofa is accompanied by two side chairs, perfect for relaxing in front of the grand fireplace or watching the flat screen television. Keeping the room cozy and warm, the fireplace is surrounded by neutral tile and finished off with a rich, wood mantle. Accessories complete the look and keep the focus on the myriad of musical instruments and framed artwork from “A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas,” in which they both performed for many years.

“We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out,” says Judy.

“Laurie was amazing to work with, and what better way to utilize art than to look at one’s own possessions and talents to create beauty in the home whenever possible.” n

DIY REVERSIBLE PHOTO BOARD & SWIVEL FRAME

Take the decoupage projects from your childhood to a sophisticated level with your favorite photographs and MDF (medium-density fiber) boards. The project is simple, inexpensive and creates a unique way to display photos in your home or office or to give as meaningful gifts.

Get two looks in one by mounting photos on both sides of the MDF. This option is great for areas where the photo can be seen from both sides, like on a sofa table or an office desk. Or if they aren’t seen on both sides, it is a fun option to turn them around for a new look. The swivel frame adds dimension and novelty, but the MDF boards look great on their own too.

MDF Photo Board

1. Cut MDF to size. This project used 8x10, 6x6, and 5x7 photos.

2. Sand all sides of the MDF with fine grit sandpaper and wipe clean.

3. Paint the sides and edges of the board top. Once dry, lightly sand the fibers that have surfaced from the paint. Paint/sand until you are satisfied with the smoothness.

4. Using a small foam brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge across the face of the board, working from the center out. Ensure complete coverage, paying close attention to the corners and edges.

5. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the back of the photo with the same technique.

6. Align your photo on the board, creating a sandwich with the Mod Podge in between. Apply pressure working from the center out to eliminate air pockets.

7. Wipe away any excess adhesive along the edges and place the board photo side down on wax paper. Place a heavy object on top of the board to prevent air pockets while drying. Let stand 30 minutes.

8. Applying Mod Podge to the top of the photo will create the finish that keeps this project from looking like a photo glued to a board. Mod Podge will also serve as a sealant and protector for the photo. Apply a generous layer, then take a smooth sponge or daubing brush to daub the Mod Podge, removing all brush strokes and giving it canvas-like texture.

9. Let dry for several hours before handling and applying a photo to the other side.

Swivel Frame

Dimensions used are for creating a 1/2” floating space around a horizontal 8x10 MDF photo board.

1. On the poplar boards cut to 12”, drill holes that are 3/8” deep at the 6” mark. Adding masking tape to the drill bit 3/8” up will help to gauge the depth of the hole.

2. Follow the process by drilling into the long side of the MDF photo board at the 5” mark. Since the drill bit is smaller at the tip, drilling both holes at 3/8” deep will allow for ½” of the dowel to be visible in the floating space between frame and photo board.

3. Apply stain or paint to the frame and dowels.

4. Use a nail gun to assemble the frame with the 9” boards being inset between the 12” boards and adding the dowels and photo board inside the frame before attaching the final 12” board. n

CARDIOGENETICS HELPS ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE HEART

Even before moving into the field of cardiogenetics, genetic counselor Kristen DeBerg, M.S., with Sanford Imagenetics, heard a similar refrain from countless patients.

“I’m either going to die of cancer or a heart attack,” they’d matter-of-factly say.

DeBerg has a response.

“Well, let’s see if we can change that,” she says.

DeBerg is working to make that change through cardiogenetics. Her field of expertise is opening the door to answers about how genetics plays a role in heart illness through improved screening and early treatment of certain inherited cardiovascular disorders, as it already has with cancer patients. This means that if people in your family have a history of heart problems, there’s a chance you could, too.

DeBerg is board-certified by the American Board of Genetic Counselors. Through cardiogenetics, counselors like DeBerg can look at families with people affected by similar cardiac issues — from irregular heartbeats to heart diseases to cases of unusually elevated cholesterol — and investigate if a genetic variant is at play.

“Having a heart attack at a young age is not normal. It’s not normal to die at age 40 or 50 from a cardiac condition,” she says. “So if a family has a history of these abnormalities, there could be a genetic component.”

RAISING AWARENESS

Inherited heart disease is more common than once thought, which means genetic counseling is more important than ever. Cardiogenetics is helping to provide answers to patients and give them the means necessary to deal with their condition. Testing can allow patients to be aware of their heart health and seek treatment, though genetic counseling doesn’t always necessarily include testing.

DeBerg generally sees patients in a couple of different circumstances. A cardiologist may recognize a pattern of heart issues in the family. In these cases, DeBerg’s right there in the clinic to talk to patients that day and discuss with them if the heart issues family members are having might have a genetic component through cardiogenetics.

The other most common circumstances leading patients to seek out DeBerg’s expertise begin with relatives. Some do so after a family member has been diagnosed with a heart condition. Others have had relatives undergo testing that revealed a genetic predisposition to a heart condition. n

PROCEDURE MAY ALLOW YOU TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR GLASSES

If you’re sick of wearing glasses and tired of the “dry eye” feeling that comes from wearing soft contact lenses all day, a relatively unknown treatment option may help. It can also serve as a form of myopia control for you or your children, and help your kids to avoid inheriting “your eyesight.”

ALTERNATIVE TO LASER VISION CORRECTION

Orthokeratology – “Ortho-K” for short – uses a specialty rigid-gas permeable contact lens to mold or reshape the cornea while a patient sleeps. When the patient removes the lenses in the morning, they have improved unaided vision. It’s as if they had corrective laser surgery overnight.

“Individuals with myopia, which is the clinical term for nearsightedness, see things better that are nearby. They often require contacts or glasses to improve their distance vision,” said Avera Medical Group Eye Care Optometrist Paul J. Draayer. “However, as the amount of myopia increases, so does the chance of developing more serious eye problems like cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment. It is for this reason that nearsightedness is now thought of as more of a disease process, not just a vision condition.”

Draayer said recent studies have tracked an alarming increase in nearsightedness, both in numbers and degree.

“This increase is likely related to the increasing demands we place on our eyes with digital devices,” he said. “Refractive error, which would be farsighted, nearsighted and astigmatism, are developed when we’re young. Children’s eyes adapt to their stimuli, so when they spend a lot of time focusing at nearby items, their eyes grow longer to allow their natural vision to be more nearsighted. While this helps them see things nearby, but makes

their distance vision much more blurry. That’s one of the reasons many health care professionals promote the idea of kids spending less time on digital devices. Kids need to get outside and play to develop their vision, too.”

Parents also might consider Ortho-K, as it can help kids as young as 8. It not only serves to correct refractive error and prevent nearsightedness from worsening, but it’s reversible while laser vision correction is not. In addition to an alternative to LASIK, Ortho-K serves as a form of myopia control.

GETTING STARTED

If you want to try Orthokeratology, it begins with an assessment.

“Patients will come in and we’ll map their cornea, check their prescription, and conduct an evaluation of their corneal health,” said Draayer. “There are some qualifications and restrictions, and for some people, Ortho-K isn’t possible. But for many others it can be an amazing option.”

If a person is a good candidate, the special lenses are ordered. When they arrive, Draayer and his team will coach the patient on how to put them in and take them out. It requires a slightly different technique than the one used for soft contact lenses.

“They then will wear the lenses when they go to bed that night, and then return to our office the next morning,” Draayer said. “We will often see a significant improvement in their vision, and in other cases, we sometimes may need to apply a slight tweak in the approach.”

LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF RESHAPING

Since reshaping lenses last for a few years, the cost for their use is more comparable to wearing glasses or contacts. This is especially true for people who sought other forms of myopia control, such as wearing noline bifocals or multi-focal contact lenses.

“Ortho-K is meant to serve as a preventive approach to the condition, and it has proven results,” Draayer said. “The current approach is just a reaction that requires constant updates to glasses and contacts, without making real changes that last.” n

ANSWERING the Call

Traveling to Ireland this past summer and being in the places where Nano lived and did her work, actually revealed to me that I am in a place God wants me. I understand my Christian accountability di erently now. Today, I ‘must’ be an extension of the heart and hands of those who have ministered before, Nano, the Presentation Sisters, and our loving Creator.”

Nano Nagle lived in Ireland during the 1700s, a time of oppression in the Catholic church. Those who were Catholic were not allowed to be educated, which resulted in them living in extreme poverty. Nano was raised in a prominent family and attended school in Paris where she was able to receive a Catholic education and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle.

However, she felt God nudging her to help the poor and the needy back in Ireland. She was torn between continuing an easier life in Paris or educating those who were being oppressed. The cost of starting an illegal school to teach Catholics in Ireland was high; it meant putting her and her family in danger of being thrown in jail.

“She was pulled between what she wanted to do and what the Irish people needed her to do,” Sister Elaine Garry explained. “She

struggled for a long time.”

Nano spent time praying and seeking God and His will for her life. She answered God’s prompting and returned to Ireland to begin educating Catholics, despite the risks. As expected, answering the call didn’t come without its challenges.

She elicited the assistance of nuns in France, but they were unable to go out to help the children as they were considered cloistered nuns, meaning they were to stay at the convent. So, Nano returned to God to ask what the next step was. Through her prayer, and after much struggle, she found other women willing to begin an order of sisters who could go out amongst the people with her.

Sister Elaine said that Nano focused on listening to the needs of the people at the time and listening to what God was calling her to do. This process of discerning was modeled by Nano and

is a practice the Presentation Sisters continue to follow today. Sister Elaine said it starts with asking God what He wants you to do and then to pray about it. Then, write down the pros and cons of each potential choice. Finally, listen and look inside to see which decision brings inner peace, and then make a choice.

“It’s a simple way of looking at discernment. It’s asking, ‘what has God planned for me?’ and then listening inside,” Sister Elaine said.

Sister Elaine believes following the discernment process allows you to seek God first to understand what He wants for your life and how He wants you to live. It can be difficult to listen at times, but once you make your decision and find inner peace, you can respond to the needs of those around you.

Del’Inkka Beaudion: “You Have a Voice and Power to Change the World”

For Del’Inkka Beaudion opportunity is in everything and everyone.

A Louisiana transplant, Del’Inkka moved to Sioux Falls at the age of 19.

Today at age 31 she is the owner of Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen. But the trajectory of her life doesn’t end with her new restaurant. Besides being a wife, mother. entrepreneur and the city’s sole female African American restaurateur, she is also a coach, board member, and activist involved in communitybased efforts to help empower others.

Important to Del’Inkka is her African American heritage. Del’Inkka is a board member for the African American History Museum in Sioux Falls.

“As an African American woman, my culture and its history is very important to me. As a board, we want to be able to advance our museum here in Sioux Falls to new levels and have an opportunity to educate our community on African American history. Most people don’t even know this special museum exists and that it is part of the Washington Pavilion.”

Del’Inkka is also part of ESC – Established Sustainable Connections – an organization that connects cultures in Sioux Falls.

“It’s meant to bridge the gap for people of color and culture,” she says. “We have had an opportunity to bring people together and discuss difficult topics creating a safe space for those conversations such

as the 13th Amendment discussion and kneeling for the flag.”

Del’Inkka has coordinated several events including the annual Minority Mixer and Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery.

GirlTrek, a nonprofit that motivates women of color to focus on mental and physical health, is yet another organization Del’Inkka is part of.

“We lace up our sneakers and walk each day as a declaration of selfcare,” she says.

Together with her husband, Julian, Del’Inkka also coaches. For eight years, the couple has coached basketball at the YMCA working with 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys.

“Julian and I have two daughters, Jamiah who is seven and Jalayah who is three – we don’t have children on the team. Still, we feel that we are giving back to the community by coaching. We can be role models teaching social and emotional skills,” she says. “I believe everyone can do anything they want if they put their minds to it. Kids

need to hear that message to help them be more creative, resilient and develop perseverance.”

Del’Inkka believes her willingness to take a risk and move forward with big decisions helped to get her to this place in life.

“It was a tough decision for me to move to Sioux Falls at age 19,” she says. “I had never left Louisiana, but Julian who was then my boyfriend had left Louisiana returning to Sioux Falls months earlier for orthopedic surgery. He never came back.”

That summer, Julian and his mother, Gwendolyn Beaudion invited Del’Inkka to Sioux Falls to show her what a “different environment” could provide.

“Sioux Falls was simply beautiful – the parks, the downtown, the SculptureWalk,” she recalls. “I was totally taken back by the lifestyle and fell in love with the atmosphere. The city was unbelievable.

“At that point, I really started to question myself: What would my life be outside Louisiana? Oh, the possibilities! My goal since I was a little girl

was to make an impact. If I was going to continue to grow and develop, I would have to make some changes. Though my mom was against the idea, my dad said, ‘Why not?’”

Del’Inkka wasted no time moving to Sioux Falls and settling down. She took a job in the banking industry, married Julian and started a family. Her favorite pastime was cooking.

I always loved cooking southern Louisiana food; it’s so delicious,” she says. “And back home, most everyone loved to cook. If you didn’t cook, you were well fed by someone’s grandma. I enjoyed being in the kitchen and being able to enjoy a meal with friends.”

For eight years, Del’Inkka settled for a safe lifestyle. But then made another major life-changing decision. She quit her job.

“Seeing my mother-in-law own her own restaurant and other small business entrepreneurs succeed helped fuel my decision to pursue my passion for cooking and owning a restaurant.”

Del’Inkka says at the time it was a “scary decision.” She and her husband had just bought a house and discovered they were expecting their second child.

“Julian and I both prayed. Through the support of my husband, we were able to accept life’s challenges and move forward.”

For one year she didn’t work staying at home to be a mom. Her oldest daughter Jamiah was three when Jalayah was born. Del’Inkka knew she had to figure out what she wanted to do. The one thing she knew for sure –she loved to cook.

Through much discussion, the couple made another big decision. They took out a $30,000 loan and decided

to purchase a food truck. They called it Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen.

Once Del’Inkka started serving up her home-style Cajun from the 18-foot trailer everything again seemed to fall into place. A unique but limited menu, Sioux Falls’ love of food trucks, and job flexibility helped build her success. For three years, Swamp Daddy’s proved to be a real crowd pleaser.

Still, there was the winter.

“I had to make another decision. The food truck was only generating seasonal revenue. Should Swamp Daddy’s become a restaurant? We decided to move forward with the restaurant.”

It’s been over one year since Del’Inkka sold her food truck in favor of brick and mortar. Now located in the Jones421 building on North Phillips in downtown Sioux Falls, Swamp Daddy’s new urban spot is located in a trendy food hall with a marketplace concept where people gather to sit, hang out or eat.

Del’Inkka admits with the restaurant, her family and her volunteer work, there is limited girls’ night out. But that doesn’t matter at this point. The now socially conscious influencer feels she is wired to survive and thrive in changing times.

“My family and I are truly blessed to have so many opportunities to make an impact. I have been especially fortunate to have my mother-in-law Gwendolyn help me with the food truck and watch the girls,” she says. “Having her support has allowed us to be involved in the community.”

These days, Del’Inkka is convinced she truly has followed her dreams. “I want my daughters to be inspired by that.”

Del’Inkka’s message to others: “I encourage every woman out there to know that she has a voice and the power to change the world. And it’s okay to focus on yourself, your dreams and your aspirations.” n

Entrepreneur Cheri Kraemer Named 2018 Compounding Pharmacist of the Year

While most girls in middle school are agonizing over make-up, clothes and boys; Cheri Kraemer was contemplating a career in pharmacy. Today, she owns and operates Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic, Inc., a nationally recognized PCAB/ACHC Accredited® compounding pharmacy.

A Sioux Falls native, Cheri and her husband Larry of 34 years have two children Lucas and Kiera. Following in their mother’s footsteps, they are both currently pursuing pharmacy careers at South Dakota State University and have always worked for the family business.

For Cheri, owning and operating a world-class facility with the help and support of family and her committed employees just about sums up perfect. “I often get asked to share my journey to success with others, particularly women. I say follow your dream not the money.  Take a chance because you may think your idea was your idea, but I believe God plants the seeds that become the idea and when God puts that idea in you, you must follow through. If you are prepared to work hard and sacrifice with God behind you, you cannot fail.”

“I knew since eighth grade I wanted to be a pharmacist and I always wanted to work for an independent pharmacy. Once I owned the pharmacy, I chose this route of compounding because I saw a great need to provide customized medications locally to the Sioux Falls region. ‘2018 Nurse of the Year’ for JY6 Foundation

It takes someone truly special to be an oncology nurse. They are with us from the time our cancer journey begins, helping us and our families navigate the complex world of cancer treatment.

One such oncology nurse is Tina Schaap, who is going above and beyond in her career.

Schaap, who works as a clinic nurse at Avera Medical Group Hematology and Transplant, was named the ‘2018 Nurse of the Year’ award by the JY6 Foundation at a recognition dinner last April. The award recognizes an oncology nurse in the Sioux Falls area who has made significant contributions to hematology and oncology nursing service.

“I was very flattered to be selected for the award,” Schaap said, adding that there are many dedicated oncology nurses in the area.

The JY6 Foundation, which is named after Jorgen Yde who died from Leukemia in 2011, raises money for pediatric oncology and leukemia research and brings awareness to the community.

“Our board of directors reviews all the nominations and they select a recipient each year,” said Dane Yde, JY6 Foundation Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “All the nurses we’ve honored, including Tina, have had extraordinary and exceptional careers in nursing.”

A nurse for 12 years — all of those in oncology — Schaap is responsible for outpatient care, including chemotherapy schedules, and services and referrals that patients need. She also directs patient care both in the clinic and over the phone to help manage patient’s needs.

In supporting her nomination for the award, Avera Hematology and Oncology clinic manager Katie Van Beek said Schaap cares deeply about her patients.

“One thing that really sets Tina apart is how much she truly cares for her patients and the time she invests in making sure all of their questions are answered,” she said. “They view her as someone who is part of their care team and will always be there for them.”

Schaap explained how she became an oncology nurse.

“At the time I was attending nursing school, I had an opportunity to do an internship on the oncology floor the summer before I graduated, and I just fell in love with oncology and have never left,” she said, adding. “I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else in my nursing career.”

While it’s extremely demanding work, it’s also extremely rewarding, said Schaap.

“From diagnosis to treatment, to either remission or hopefully a cure, there’s tons of complexity that constantly makes you have to think, and really care for the whole person and not just their cancer,” she explained.

Schaap said she appreciates the bond she has with her patients.

“Part of the reason I fell in love with oncology and hematology is because you get to know the person so well over a long period of time,” she said. “They, as well as their family, become part of my family. I really appreciate them allowing me to be involved at a very significant time in their lives.” n

Sioux Falls’ Newest Counseling Service Ready to Meet the City’s Mental Health Challenges

Burroughs Counseling and Consultation is Sioux Falls’ newest resource when it comes to providing help for those with personal problems and those struggling with mental health issues. Having opened in September of 2018, the facility specializes in a wide array of outpatient services from depression, anxiety disorders, athletic and sports-related issues to trauma response treatment, marital counseling, family therapy and suicidal ideation.

Andrew Burroughs, a licensed professional counselor, and Ashley R. Termansen, a clinical social worker and therapist, believe that individuals and families must come first and they work to provide a positive counseling experience.

“We strive to provide quality services because we feel that a negative experience may hinder a person from seeking future services,” Andrew says. “Our focus is to meet each person with honesty, compassion and respect wherever they may be in their journey.”

Ashley believes the city and the surrounding area have a “high need” for mental health services.

“We both had been commuting outside of Sioux Falls, but we began seeing an increased need for mental health services within the city. Sioux Falls, thus, became our primary focus,” says Ashley.

Andrew and Ashley work with individuals from age three to the elderly. Some of their specialty training includes: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR); Gottman Couples Therapy; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); Play Therapy; Trauma Response; Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); and Crisis Intervention.

Each counselor is a client-centered therapist. Andrew primarily works with athletes and couples; Ashley specializes in trauma, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

Andrew and Ashley want the community to know that together as counselors they have 8+ years of experience working with severe mental illness as well as treating a broad range of mental health issues.

“Our office provides a peaceful, easy-going setting,” says Andrew. “We want our clients to feel relaxed and comfortable. Also, we emphasize that we will see a patient within 24 hours of a referral.”
