Living in South Dakota means accepting that winters will be a bit chilly, and because of that, winter weddings are not as popular as summer weddings. But The Meadow Barn, located south of Sioux Falls, offers couples a beautiful wedding experience even in the chilliest of months.
Katie Jones, who owns The Meadow Barn and The Veranda by Meadow Barn with her husband Greg, says that couples interested in winter weddings will have more prime date options available than in the summer months. Saturday weddings are hard to come by in other seasons because they book up first, but in the winter, it’s more likely there will be some great dates still available at The Meadow Barn.
Winter weddings are also more affordable due to the offpeak pricing. Jones says that some vendors may even offer discounts as well during the winter months. Along with the more affordable pricing, there are also special perks available to couples that select a winter wedding date at The Meadow Barn.
“When I think of a winter wedding here in South Dakota, I think of the warmth, all the textures, and the vibrant colors you can play around with,” Jones said. “The Meadow Barn is a venue that has all of that.”
The Meadow Barn is a real post and beam structure, which creates a cozy and warm atmosphere, and has three large chandeliers that add an elegant touch. Some couples will decorate the space with popular greenery and pops of color during the winter months, and because The Meadow Barn already provides a warm and cozy ambiance, some couples find they don’t need as many additional decorations.
Jones shares that another fun element to play around with for the reception is selecting creative and seasonal drinks. Signature drinks have included Hot Mulled Wine and a Spiced Bourbon Old Fashioned.
For couples wanting to have a more formal or black-tie affair, a winter wedding is the perfect opportunity for that. Jones
says because weddings in the winter aren’t as common, guests don’t experience the wedding fatigue they may experience in other seasons.
Another huge benefit to having a winter wedding is the pictures, Jones says.
“I’m always taken aback by pictures outside of The Meadow Barn, especially if there’s a coat of white snow,” Jones said. “They’re just breathtaking. Outdoor pictures can be extremely beautiful and you can get creative with all the great photo opportunities the property has.”

The blustery South Dakota winter has set in with considerably less sun, which means the majority of the population will become vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D also known as the sunshine vitamin, is manufactured in our skin following sunlight exposure. According to GrassrootsHealth, studies have found that people with low vitamin D experience reduced athletic performance and are at a higher risk of many serious diseases: namely, cardiovascular disease, cancers like breast and colorectal, autoimmune diseases including diabetes and multiple sclerosis, and even infections, flu, colds and much more.
What is ironic about winter is that when people need vitamin D the most, the majority are not getting enough. The question remains: Why is it that we can so easily become Vitamin D deficient in the winter months? The answer is: Because we are confined inside. Between work, the bitter cold, and indoor-focused activities, we get less and less sunlight. “Our bodies have evolved to use the sun to get vitamin D,” shares Carole Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth. “We are just now learning the long-term effects of being Vitamin D deprived.”

During the holiday season, the kitchen and dining room become the heart of the ho-hohome. The Holidays can certainly be a challenging time to make healthy choices when it comes to eating and drinking. It’s hard enough to make those choices daily, and even more so when Holiday parties and events are abundant, where decadent food and seasonal drinks abound. Among the mature tree lined streets of the well-known McKennan Park neighborhood, sits a renovated craftsman style home proudly owned by Alex Halbach. From the moment you pass through the front door and step onto the beautiful 1 ½” white oak wood floors, it is easy to see he has poured his heart and soul into this home. This homeowner has done a brilliant job of preserving and enhancing historic details like the oversized oak baseboards, glass doorknobs and stunning wood floors, all while introducing modern design elements throughout.
Mr. Halbach, a lawyer and Partner with Cutler Law Firm, was first drawn to the McKennan Park area in 2007 while interning nearby at the Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire before attending law school. Alex says, “I fell in love with this unique neighborhood and began regularly checking Zillow for homes for sale.” This particular home kept popping up in search results, but it needed a lot of work and he didn’t know if he was ready for the challenges of renovating an older home. Eventually, Alex decided to take a look and he fell in love with the thought of what it could be, not necessarily what it was. Alex is the 4th homeowner of this 107-year-old home, and he plans to make it his forever home.

Alex closed on this long-awaited home in 2010 and quickly started renovations to make it his own, but project after project brought remodel fatigue and in 2015, he decided to dive head-first into a 2-year renovation to transform the property which was completed in 2017 with the help of Penny Klinedinst from Simply Perfect and Ryan Knutson from Boulevard Construction. Alex lifted the home and installed a new foundation which allowed him to add additional living space on the main floor, lower and upper level. The addition includes a butler’s pantry, mudroom, half bath, covered porch, and almost tripled the size of the original kitchen. The kitchen is very timeless with its white perimeter cabinets, neutral grey subway tile, and large island painted in Urbane Bronze. The addition was so well designed that you would never guess that the floorplan was changed so drastically. Not only is this 1915 craftsman style home larger, but it’s also packed with character and style like apron front sinks that are true to that era.
The butler’s pantry allows Alex to keep his kitchen neat while all the kitchen essentials are nearby. In this beautiful pantry you’ll also find modern amenities like an espresso machine sitting on a beautiful Cambria quartz countertop and a conveniently located beverage and wine fridge. The nearby mudroom and half bath are in perfect harmony as all the cabinetry is painted in Blue Spruce and feature custom Aeroscape tile created by Ryan Knutson, which Ryan manufactures himself. Halbach is quick to give credit to Ryan and Penny for making his renovation vision a reality.

Alex added an eye catching black and white geometric wallpaper that runs the entire length of the home by starting in the main level mudroom and continuing down the staircase to the opposite end of the basement. The established lawyer explains that the wallpaper was picked with the intention of transitioning those walking throughout the home from the white and bright upstairs to the black and moody basement. This tactic works brilliantly in making the upper and lower levels of this 4000 square foot home blend seamlessly.
Once you’ve entered the lower level, you are immediately drawn to the show stopping 1800 bottle temperature controlled wine cellar and bar. The wine cellar cabinets, custom made library ladder, and ceiling are all finished in black walnut and were custom built by Ryan in the garage of his home. The back wall of the cellar features Sioux quartzite with a raised beaded joint, which is appropriate for a home built in 1915. The oversized black bar has plenty of space for mixing drinks on the Cambria quartz countertop making it perfect for entertaining. Near the bar is a rustic white oak pool table paired with a large chandelier and modern concrete fireplace. Alex pointed out to me that the pool table light and almost all the other finishes and furniture in the home are from Penny’s store. Mr. Halbach explains, “I met Penny through mutual friends and work connections. They recently partnered with Penny to form Simply Perfect Properties where they plan to “reimagine restoration” of other historic, one-of-a-kind properties and recently started a full renovation of a 1930’s cottage on the boulevard. Put your burnt-out pre-LED Christmas light bulbs to good use and add kitschy retro decor this holiday season. This vintage Christmas flair is a nod to nostalgia and brings something bright and playful to your home. While opaque bulbs can be used, translucent bulbs like the ones used here, make wonderful suncatchers in south-facing windows.
1. Cut the tinsel ribbon to length, allowing for a generous drop.
2. Fold the ribbon in half to find the midpoint.
3. Add a pea-sized drop of hot glue to the thread of the bulb and attach it to the tinsel at the midpoint.
4. Working out from the center bulb, repeat with another bulb every 5 inches.
1. Cut a 1 ½ inch circle from a scrap piece of cardboard.
2. Glue tinsel ribbon to the cardboard, starting along the outer edge and winding it in a flat spiral inward to completely cover the cardboard.
3. Add a pea-sized drop of hot glue to the thread of a bulb and attach it to the face of the tinselcovered circle. Start with the two bulbs that will be the top and bottom bulbs of the snowflake.
4. Repeat with additional bulbs to finish out the snowflake shape. n

Midwives play a big role in women’s health care before, during, and after pregnancy care. We’re here to dispel any confusion surrounding midwives and the services they provide.
Considering a midwife? Find one near you
The care a midwife can provide goes beyond pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives provide a personal, relationship-based approach to a full scope of care needs. This includes family planning, postpartum care, menopause care, and gynecological care.
“We can care for women before puberty, before their first period all the way up not only to but through menopause,” says Megan Burgers, C.N.M., a certified nurse-midwife at Sanford Health.
A midwife can perform your daughter’s first pap smear and be her healthcare provider throughout her life.
“It’s a beautiful continuity of care,” says Burgers.
A certified nurse-midwife has a master’s degree in nursing and has been certified with special training in midwifery. When women choose to receive care from a midwife, they have access to the highest standard of care and a variety of options.
In fact, the care a midwife offers is all about options.
“We come at women’s health from a perspective of wholeness and wellness and education and options. And I would say that we’re passionate about providing education and options,” says Burgers. “I love teaching women about how their bodies work so that they can make personalized choices for themselves.”
Myth: You can choose either a midwife or a doctor – not both
At Sanford Health, that myth couldn’t be farther from the truth.
“We are well integrated into the Sanford umbrella, meaning we have easy access to our colleagues,” says Burgers. “Our offices are right around the corner from the OB/GYNs.”
Midwives work hand-in-hand with physicians through collaboration, connection, and referrals. If necessary, midwives can get in touch with experts quickly and easily. They have access to maternal-fetal medicine , obstetrics , gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology specialists
In short: You can work with both. This also extends to your primary care. You can see a family medicine provider for your general wellness care and a midwife for your OB/GYN needs.
If a woman has a high-risk pregnancy or one with complications, she can still have a nurse-midwife on her care team.
Women can work with maternal-fetal experts to get the specialized care they need. After those appointments, they can pop over to a midwife for all their other pregnancy needs. Even for high-risk pregnancies, midwives can still deliver the baby in many cases.
If you choose to or need to deliver via C-section, your OB/ GYN provider will perform the surgery, but a midwife can offer support in other ways. They’ll be by your side during surgery and beyond.
When caring for pregnancies that seem low-risk, midwives are always on alert for signs of complications. If something does go wrong, help is often just down the hall.
“We can seamlessly discuss what’s going on, what needs to happen and help move towards whatever is necessary to help keep her and the baby safe,” says Burgers.
Pregnancy care you can count on
Having a midwife by your side during your pregnancy gives you access to a variety of care options – not fewer.
“We have longer appointment times to be able to have longer conversations. Not necessarily just medical focused but also discussing the holistic whole person,” says Burgers.
When women feel supported, it can affect every aspect of childbirth.
“Making a woman feel comfortable and safe in labor is vitally important for not only her experience but the labor process itself. It actually influences the hormones and chemicals involved in the labor process. And so, we talk during the pregnancy about comfort options,” says Burgers.
Midwives offer all pain relief options, including medications like epidurals. Women can also explore natural alternatives like water births and hypnobirthing.
“I encourage people to bring up questions and ask for alternatives and see what’s out there,” says Burgers. n

Farmers readily admit they are exposed to hazardous noise levels during daily farming. Just how bad is it? An enclosed tractor cab exposes you to about 92 dB of sound; the sound of a squealing pig – 100 dB of sound; and a chain saw – 115dB.
According to the National Institute of Health sounds at or below 70 dBs are generally considered safe while sounds about 85 dB are likely to damage a person’s hearing over time.
Hazardous noise on the farm was behind Madison farmer Steve Strom’s hearing loss.
“I experienced my hearing loss probably about 15 years ago due to noise levels from my farming equipment and tools,” he said.
Strom gave hearing aids a try. In fact, he tried twice with two different brands. But neither were adequate to provide good hearing with the tough conditions and lifestyle required in farming. “Our South Dakota youth are at serious risk for nicotine addiction,” said Mindy Heuer, RN and Program Manager for the Tobacco Prevention Grant, a state initiative led by the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC).
“Vaping is a particularly concerning trend. Middle-schoolers in South Dakota are using e-cigarettes at an alarming rate – 8x higher than that in 2011,” she said.

The magic act was the hit of the event and reinforced visually that we can all help break the chain of infection,” says Hofer. “A magician to promote a health program? This multi-pronged approach resulted in an estimated readership of 200,000.

For Kyrie Dunkley introducing herself is about more than just telling someone her name. It’s sharing where she came from – Oceti Sakowin (The Seven Council Fires) referring to collectively the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota-speaking people. But where she “came from” isn’t just the location of where she lives, but rather what defines her.
“I start with a greeting, introducing myself in Dakota then English. I provide the name of the tribe to which I am enrolled along with my immediate family origin. It’s a more personal way introductions are done as Native Americans.”
South Dakota is home to nine reservations: Cheyenne River; Crow Creek; Flandreau, Lower Brule; Oglala; Rosebud; Sisseton Wahpeton; Standing Rock, and Yankton. “My mother is Oglala and my father is Sisseton Wahpeton, and Spirit Lake.”
Kyrie is proud to be Dakota/Lakota and sees it as a source of inspiration. The 32-year-old Indigenous stylist, artist, and designer creates ribbon
skirts and shirts – historical and traditional clothing that has symbolized Native heritage for over 400 years. Branded Shinin Star Style, the brightly colored ribbon skirts are traditional pieces of clothing for many Native American women and girls as they honor their heritage. Interestingly, the traditional ribbon skirt was spotlighted when Interior Secretary Deb Haaland wore it for her swearing-in ceremony in 2021.
“The Native clothing is part of an evolution. From the buckskin attire to cloth and ribbons, it is similar to the evolution of the star quilts and buffalo robes,” she explains.
Kyrie’s skirts are mostly A-line, usually satin or cotton, and have layers of ribbons. The ribbons sewn onto skirts are multiplecolored; each color has a special significance to the wearer. Custom pieces sometimes include very intricate applique work.
Kyrie calls her skirts “wearable art.”
“Each is one-of-a-kind, handmade, and a form of highly expressive art. I use lots of monochromes, and the colors are intentional. The skirt is meant to inspire confidence and offer identity and connection. The Indigenous ribbon work always tells a story. Each collection has a particular theme. Her off-the-rack items can be found at Sweetgrass Soapery/All Walks Trading Post in downtown Sioux Falls where she sells her ribbon skirts, shirts, and DIY ribbon skirt kits.

Kyrie says her upbringing played a big part in her passion to maintain this traditional craftwork. “I come from a large family of aunts and uncles. My Hunka (adopted) Mom, Robin Bowen, raised me until I was 14. I moved many times, and I attended a new school every two years. Robin encouraged Oceti Sakowin teachings and history at every school we attended through exhibitions –storytelling, songs, and dance. I learned a lot about my Native culture and the meaning of having a tiospaye (extended family) by gathering consistently with other indigenous families in the area. I danced at powwows, participated in drum ceremonies, watched my aunties put together regalia and I learned how to bead pens.”
Though Kyrie watched others create traditional clothing, she didn’t start sewing until she “entered motherhood.” “It was then that I realized I wanted to pass on to my child the same cultural experiences and provide him with a strong foundation of selfidentity to fall back on. As a traditional Native mother, I started nesting by making his baby moccasins and a star quilt.”
While her Hunka Mom Robin influenced Kyrie to embrace her Native roots, it was her late husband Matthew, Sr. who inspired her to be bold and follow her passions. “Matthew was a Red Lake enrolled tribal member. He was an artist, musician, actor, activist, and 10-year war veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He always told me: ‘Stop hesitating, nothing changes if nothing changes.’ When my husband passed away in May of 2018, I suddenly became a widow with a two-year-old son. I turned to sewing to help me work through my grief. During this time, I

learned a lot about mental health, historical trauma, and intergenerational trauma. Matthew’s inspiring words always stayed with me, pushing me to get out of my comfort zone.”
Looking back, Kyrie now realizes it was Robin and Matthew who together showed her the deeper meaning of the Indigenous culture. Their influence guided her determination to preserve its history and pass it along.
Before COVID-19, Kyrie was the afterschool Native Youth Club activities teacher for the Multi-Cultural Center in Sioux Falls. It was during the quarantine in May of 2020 she put together her first clothing collection and presented a Virtual Fashion Show Fundraiser dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in partnership with South Dakota Urban Indian Health (SDUIH) with the funds going to a local Indigenous women’s leadership group.
These days, Kyrie is finding more ways to bring attention to the longstanding craft and Native culture by instructing ribbon skirt-making workshops along with sewing for Native high school seniors as a way of celebration. “I consider myself involved in ‘Indianpreneurship” as my eye for design isn’t limited to just ribbon work.”
This last year she has immersed herself in everything Native. In May, she organized a pop-up round dance in Sioux Falls sponsored by the A.I.M. Medicine Wheel COVID Prevention and Healing Project. She was an emerging fashion designer and model for the 1st annual First American Museum and Teton Trade Cloth Fashion Summit this past summer. She modeled again for the “Walking in Beauty” Fashion show at the Black Hills PowWow 2022. She is also a board member of the Indigenous Nations United 501 (c) non-profit as well as a teaching artist for the South Dakota Arts Council. Recently, she played a part in the ITN film “Uprising” directed by Christopher Forbes, and was the Indigenous stylist for most of the native actors on set.
She views this new stage of her life as a form of activism and connection for the Native community. “Everything I now do is a physical expression of who I am,” says Kyrie.
From fashion shows to teaching basic cultural skills outlined in the SD Office of Indian Education Essential Understandings and Standards, she embraces her Dakota/ Lakota culture as it ribbons through her life. “I now teach sewing and ribbon skirt class presentations and share cultural stories. I especially enjoy working with schools and the community to provide sewing services to preserve our culture and encourage our current generation to continue indigenizing their spaces through expressive art. Sewing is everything; it helped mend my soul.”
For Kyrie the ribbon art carries a metaphor of intention –that happiness is a tight ribbon that holds life together. Her advice: “Do what makes your soul shine.” n
Creator’s Kids Daycare Center is one of the newest Christian daycares designed to help meet the growing need for quality daycare services in the Sioux Falls area.
Located near 77th and Minnesota, Creator’s Kids opened in October 2021 with a mission to provide exceptional childcare in a Christ-like environment through qualified teachers, personalized care, and nutrition. • Noah’s Ark Indoor Splashpad and Interactive Activity Center allow children to enjoy splashing all year long.
• The outdoor play area features two activity centers designed to promote age-appropriate play. The Discovery Center is designed for young toddlers and includes tunnels, climbing rocks, and music flower chimes to promote language and reasoning skills as well as pattern recognition. The preschool area includes a Great Adventure play structure.

Holiday weight gain is common and can be stressful. Be purposeful in continuing to eat healthy, drink water, exercise, get plenty of sleep, and engage in other healthy activities.
The holiday season brings up a lot of mixed emotions. It is important to be honest, both with yourself and others. If you are feeling upset or overwhelmed, tell someone. Trying to force yourself to be happy will only lead to feeling worse as the days go by.
