Spreading Love and Joy: Volunteering as a Couple Strengthen your bond by volunteering as a couple this holiday season By Chellee Unruh

T

he holidays are a time for giving and spending time with loved ones. But they can also be a time of stress and financial hardship for many families. That’s why it’s more important than ever to find ways to give back to your community during this special time of year. Volunteering side by side with your partner can be a heartwarming experience and a fulfilling way to give back and make a difference in your community. When choosing a volunteer opportunity, think about your shared interests and skills. What do you enjoy doing together? Once you’ve chosen an opportunity, talk to each other about what you’re most excited about and what you’re hoping to achieve. This will help you create a more meaningful and rewarding experience for both of you. Here are a few ideas to get you started. SHARE YOUR HOLIDAY TABLE: If cooking is your shared passion, ponder preparing meals and sharing them with seniors in need - or at a local community center. Organizations like Meals on Wheels, the Banquet, the Union Gospel Mission, and the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House can connect you with opportunities to cook and serve together, ensuring that no one goes hungry during the holidays. JOY OF GIFTING: If you enjoy shopping together, contemplate adopting a family in need and shopping for their holiday gifts. Several local organizations provide opportunities to help brighten 12

Holiday 2023

the season for a child, senior, or family that may be facing financial hardship. Choose gifts together, wrap them with care, and feel the joy of knowing you’ve made a family holiday dream come true. CAROLING WITH A CAUSE: For couples that love to sing or tell stories you can share your talents and bring some holiday cheer to those who are spending the holidays in a nursing home or hospital. You can sing Christmas carols or read holiday stories to the residents and patients. A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Veterans Community Project, and the Furniture Mission are focused on making a home for those in need. Whether your interest is in building, or furnishing a home, volunteering at one of these organizations can be a fun and fulfilling way to create lasting memories while creating homes for families in need. In Sioux Falls, the opportunities for couples to have fun while making a difference during the holidays are endless. Remember, the greatest gift you can give is your time and love. As you embark on your journey of spreading joy and love through volunteering, you’ll not only create cherished memories together but also make the holidays brighter for those less fortunate. Sioux Falls is the perfect place to celebrate the true spirit of the season by giving back as a couple and experiencing the joy of selflessness. n

CRAVE YOUR SOULMATE

What you need to know about CRAVE, Sioux Falls’ date night destination restaurant

Inviting ambiance, tasty food, and a comfortable price point have made CRAVE a downtown Sioux Falls date night destination. CRAVE resides inside the Hilton Garden Inn at 201 E. 8th Street. “CRAVE offers the right setting and is a great start for any date,” says Jeffry Umberger, CRAVE general manager. “It is an elevated dining experience, but the vibe holds no pretense for a ‘just us’ evening.” “While some diners dress up for a special occasion, jeans and a nice shirt are plenty fancy,” he adds. “If you stop at the bar first before getting seated, order the Pineapple Mojito. It is one of our refreshing and most popular craft drinks.” Though CRAVE features American cuisine, its Sushi is custom-made. Fresh fish Sushi is made to order and from scratch. “You can’t lose with Sushi! The meal makes it easy to enjoy conversation because the meal requires next to no effort to eat. Ideally, it is a great dinner to share with your date.” End the night with a glass of wine. “Our impressive wine tower has a little bit for everyone based on your palette and budget. We have everything from a refreshing bubbly to a traditional dessert port wines.” Here’s planning for your next date night out. Cheers! PRO TIP: Make a reservation for a guaranteed seat to avoid a wait time before starting your date night meal.

Women Can Face Unique Financial Challenges: NAVIGATING A PATH TO EMPOWERMENT By Jill Mollner, MBA, CFP® | Wealth Advisor, RJFS | Branch Operations Manager, CFS

Whether you’re the main breadwinner or sharing financial responsibility for your family, as a woman you face unique challenges when it comes to long-term financial security. Understanding these challenges can help you tear down the barriers to financial stability and step into the future with confidence.

A Closer Look at Women’s Financial Hurdles

What can you do? Control Your Finances: Set financial goals and stick to a budget. Educate Yourself: Do you know the difference between a stock, bond, and mutual fund? Is “diversification” just a buzzword? Learn basic financial and investment concepts, ask questions and seek help when needed.

Wage Gap: Women who work full-time year-round earn only 82% (on average) of what men earn,2 which has ripple effects across savings, investments, and Social Security benefits.

Balance Work and Family Life: During your working years, negotiate flexible work arrangements when possible and share household and child-related responsibilities equally with your spouse. Keep your skills updated as much as you can if you stay at home. Ask siblings or family members for help and seek outside services and support groups if you’re caring for aging parents.

Caregiving Responsibilities: Many women shoulder a bigger role in raising children, and they are more often the primary caregiver of adults (67% vs. 59% of men).3 Though rewarding, time away from work can translate to loss of income and lower Social Security benefits. This often means increased financial vulnerability in the event of divorce or death of a spouse.

Estimate Retirement Needs: Calculate your monthly expenses and what you can expect from savings, Social Security, and your retirement vehicles. Remember your Social Security benefit will change depending on the age you retire and could be impacted if you spent any time out of the workforce. Don’t forget the cost of health care in your expenses.

Longer Life Expectancies: Women live approximately 5 years longer than men,1 so their retirement dollars need to last longer.

ADVERTORIAL

Execute Estate Planning: Ensure your personal and financial wishes will be carried out by preparing essential documents like a will, trust, durable power of attorney and healthcare proxy. Identify and Mitigate Risks: Safeguard your assets and family’s well-being with insurance, such as life and disability insurance. Explore advanced strategies like trusts when needed. You don’t have to take on these challenges alone. Imagine a future where your dreams aren’t curtailed by financial uncertainty but propelled by sound financial planning. At Cornerstone, we’ve had the honor of helping women turn challenges into steppingstones for over thirty years. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and start building a solid and secure retirement plan that has your best interests at heart. Holiday Hair and Makeup By Amanda Zanger

W

ith the holidays fast approaching, along with a million decisions to make, feeling fun, confident, and classy with on-trend hair and makeup is a must to survive. For makeup, the newest trend is related to food. Yes, you read that right, food. And hair – get ready to dazzle by switching up your natural color with uniquely bold color hues. The makeup world is shifting to highlight fresh, sun-kissed skin. Strawberry Girl makeup captivated social media and is characterized by the use of minimal makeup and a pop of berry-pink blush. The trick here is to start with your favorite tinted moisturizer and apply a dewy blush or cheek stain for a natural blush. If you’re feeling bold, a couple of faux freckles will tie this look together with pizazz. Even though our summer days have passed, it appears the Strawberry Girl look is not slowing down and may easily transition to the Cranberry Girl. Latte Makeup focuses on utilizing browns and neutral tones.

18

Holiday 2023

This look is an effortless take on a summer bronzed goddess, or maybe your daily caffeine fix. The best part is that this makeup look is super easy to apply. Use your favorite nude or brown shadows on your eyelids and a brown eyeliner pencil for the lash line. For bold and beautiful lips, try a dark brown color to outline and smudge inwards, and then tap a warm brown lip color of your choice to fill in the rest, finishing with a creamy or clear gloss. Finally, we are going to talk about hair. Cowboy Copper is the hottest hair trend going! If you want to stand out with dynamic hair color at every holiday gathering check into this look. Cowboy Copper is a mix of warm, light, auburn hues, with subtle hints of gold and copper. It’s definitely a favorite trend this season and stylists are booking fast – so get your appointment made pronto! Cheers to a confident, bold, and beautiful YOU this holiday season! n

WHEN TO HIRE A PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER

Any time a person gets injured by someone else or at work, that person needs a personal injury attorney. Insurance companies are skilled at handling claims. There is a significant disparity of power and expertise between the adjuster and injured person. Having an attorney that is very experienced with handling car accidents, personal injury, and workers’ compensation claims means that the injured person will not get taken advantage of and will be treated fairly. Attorneys Kim Lanham and Jami Bishop with the Johnson, Janklow, Abdallah Law Firm focus exclusively on helping clients that have suffered from an injury. “We handle the entire case so the client’s only focus is to heal and improve,” says Jami. “They no longer have to talk to the insurance company as all of the communication is through us.” Unlike a lot of firms that have multiple practice areas, Kim and Jami’s practices are unique as their focus is entirely devoted to car accidents, personal injury and workers’ compensation cases. They are dedicated to their clients and strive to provide them with the highest level of representation. “The best part of representing clients is providing results that can change their lives for the better,” shares Kim. “We walk beside our clients during the darkest times of their lives.” Attorneys Kim Lanham and Jami Bishop cannot change the past or what happened to you or your loved ones, but they can provide compassion, guidance and be passionate advocates when it is needed most.

Dressing up in

m i n e D By Amanda Zanger

W

hat do you call a denim expert?.... A “jeanius.” Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s discuss some ways to style up any outfit with your favorite pair of jeans! As women, we value trends in different ways. Sometimes, we are totally on board, and sometimes, we stick to our guns and refuse to change - and that is OKAY! I am here to reinforce that denim pretty much goes with everybody and everything (trendy or not) and to share tips and tricks to elevate your outfits. Every day and every evening...

• A black tank paired with straight-legged blue jeans and black, strappy sandals is a super easy way to dress up in denim. • Add a little black clutch and a cropped jacket to accentuate this ensemble and you’ll have the perfect combination to take your elegance to the next level. For the office or modern sophistication……. • A relaxed blazer paired with flats or heels is an elegant and chic way to compliment a pair of jeans. • For a French-inspired sleek look - don a turtleneck with a tailored vest and a pair of slouchy, straightlegged jeans. Use these tips, a mix and match of everything in your closet with a dose of creative imagination to achieve your individual, effortless denim look. n

ALL NEW LE CREUSET SHOP BY PLUM’S COOKING COMPANY WHAT IS RHONE? Simply put, it’s a color. But the color Rhone is more than that. It is a sumptuous red plum. Like a glass of wine catching late afternoon light alongside a rich velvet upholstery, Rhone is a sensuously sophisticated red. It is also a purposely chosen color used by Le Creuset. Color is a big deal for Le Creuset and a major part of its brand. To create Rhone, Le Creuset collaborated with Chef Angie Mar of the renowned The Beatrice Inn and Les Troise Chavaux – America’s top new restaurant in New York City. For Le Creuset, tones of juicy plum, cherry, and red wine add warmth and richness to a table, making Rhone a timeless splash of style for any kitchen. And like Rhone, each signature color has meaning and a story. Le Creuset calls it “color conversation.” There’s Meringue, Sea Salt, Oyster, Artichaut, Cerise, White, Licorice, and the latest color launched earlier this spring, Shallot - a gentle pink hue so subtle you might think it was white. Pronounced “L uh cru say”, the cookware is revered for its cast iron pot known as cocotte. Creuset means “crucible”, a durable cauldron used in cooking and ironwork. “Of course, the color of the pot is a showstopper, but it’s more than that,” says Kathy Grocott, the manager of the Le Creuset Shop by Plums Cooking Company. “It is such great cookware because of all the different things you can do with a single oven-to-table pot. The heat retention, the coating, and the clean-up also make it a good product. Each piece becomes a family heirloom.”

Favorite Holiday Party Side Dishes By Jayci Holsing

A

re you wanting to throw “da bomb” holiday party for family and friends but coming up short on ideas on what to serve? Creating perfect, fun, delicious, relatively easy, and attractive, dishes for holiday parties can be stressful and time-consuming. Resources like Pinterest and Facebook are helpful, but sometimes those recipes can be more difficult and time-consuming to create than they seem to be in writing. Look no further, we have some great tasting and easy recipes for you!

Baked Cranberries

Candied Sweet Potatoes

• 1 package of fresh cranberries • powdered sugar • cinnamon • nutmeg

• 1 large can of yams • 1 stick butter • brown sugar • marshmallows

These baked cranberries lend a great twist to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday classic side. Not only do they taste like Christmas, they make your home smell like Christmas while baking them! Preheat your oven to 300 degrees and rinse your cranberries. Add some powdered sugar with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg to a large bag or container with a lid and then add your cranberries. Shake the closed bag or container to coat the cranberries, then lay them out on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in the oven for 3-5 minutes. Once the cranberries are done, they’ll become crisp enough to pop in your mouth but still retain their fresh fruit consistency. The light coating of powdered sugar and spices on these cranberries makes them just sweet enough to offset the tartness of the berries themselves. This versatile recipe can also be served as a snack or a dessert!

Sweet potatoes are another staple of the holiday season. Try this candied sweet potato recipe! All you will need is a large can of yams, a stick of butter, brown sugar, and marshmallows. Preheat the oven to 350. Drain the yams, cut them into smaller pieces, and add them to an oven-safe bowl. Cover the yams with plenty of brown sugar. Add 8-10 pats of butter on top of the brown sugar and bake until the butter and brown sugar have melted together and become a glaze. Add marshmallows to the top of your dish and put back in the oven until the tops of the marshmallows are golden brown.

WASHINGTON CROSSING It would surprise you to know that one in five Americans are facing choices about retirement living, either for themselves or a loved one. It’s good news that Washington Crossing has been that choice for about 300 seniors in our fifteen years. Let me give you some of the reasons why they came and how it happens. In most cases, the first contact with us is by a family member of the eventual resident and the first question is “Do you have any apartments available?” The answer to that is that we have a waiting list, but it is not super long, usually a 6 to 12 month wait.

Then they are curious about apartment size (650 to 1300 Square Ft), layout (1 or 2 bedrooms), services (from total independence to assisted living), amenities (everything you might expect and more), and cost (for independent singles $1,800 to $3,000/mo, $3,900 for assisted), You can look it up at www.washingtoncrossingrc.com. Now you know a lot!

Here’s more: A senior living retirement community adds the security, ease of access, and peace of mind that results when needs are not just met, they are abundantly anticipated. That’s why Washington Crossing provides laundry rooms, a hair salon, woodworking shop, game room, library, theatre/chapel, workout room, and underground parking. Daily meals, activities, and fitness classes keep seniors energized and moving, while a friendly dining room, pub, and conversation areas make for lovely mealtimes and socializing. A convenience store, a postal center and regular office hours bring ease to daily and weekly needs. The picture at right shows a soaring space, which gives you a taste of what the Washington Crossing world feels like. First time visitors invariably comment on how roomy, clean, and bright it feels. It also feels like Home.

“It’s exactly like what I thought it would be.” • Library • Fitness Center • Game Room • Beauty Salon • Woodworking Shop • Community Garden

• Heated, Indoor Parking • Large Walk-in Closets • Fully Equipped Kitchens • Convenience Store • Daily Activities • And More!

JUST IMAGINE...ALL THIS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. Visit us to see comfortable, safe and secure independent living that’s right for you.

Breakfast Lasagna (Serves 8-10)

g n i n r o M

Recipes Recipes and photos provided by Plum's Cooking

• 10 eggs • 1/2 cup whole milk • 16 oz lasagna noodles • 4 russet potatoes (sliced 1/8 inch thick) • 8 oz of cooked diced ham • 16 oz of shredded Gruyere cheese • 15 oz bag of spinach blanched and chopped • 1 red pepper (roasted) • 3 cups of garlic cream sauce*

*GARLIC CREAM SAUCE • 1/4 cup water • 2 tablespoons garlic minced. • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 3 cups heavy cream • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley. • salt and pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 1/4 cup water

1. Begin by boiling the lasagna noodles cooking to Al Dente, drain the pasta and coat with a liberal amount of olive oil to prevent sticking, and set aside. 2. Next whisk the eggs with milk and salt and pepper to taste, over medium heat scramble the eggs. Remove from heat and set aside. 3. In a 9 by 13-inch greased pan cover the bottom of dish with a layer of garlic cream sauce, next place a layer or pasta to cover the bottom, to that layer add the scrambled eggs, ham, spinach, and red pepper and sliced potatoes. You will repeat this layering until you reach the top of the dish ending with a layer of garlic cream sauce and the remaining spinach and red peppers. 4. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 50 min, remove the foil and finish at 420 degrees for 10 min our until golden brown. 5. Let cool for 15-20 min, slice and serve and enjoy.

In a saucepan, boil 1/4 cup of water over medium heat. Stir in the minced garlic and garlic powder. Boil until the water is nearly evaporated, about 5 minutes. It is okay for some water to remain, but you want very little. Stir in the heavy cream, parsley, salt, and pepper. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and 1/4 cup of water and stir until dissolved. Add to the cream mixture. Continue boiling, stirring constantly, until thickened. About 3 minutes. Add the Gruyere cheese and allow to melt. Remove from heat.

This can be made the night before. 32

Buttery Oatmeal Pancakes with Blueberry Sauce* (Makes 6 medium pancakes)

• 1 cup old fashioned oats • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 1 large egg • 2 tablespoons melted butter • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • butter for greasing the griddle and serving 1. Preheat griddle to 400 degrees. 2. In a medium sized mixing bowl combine the rolled oats and buttermilk, set aside for 15 min. While waiting for the rolled oats to soak mix dry ingredients together and set aside. Once the oats have soaked, add the egg, melted butter and vanilla to the buttermilk and oats. Next, sprinkle the dry ingredients over the wet and gently stir to combine, do not over mix. 3. Using a 1/3 cup, scoop the batter onto the buttered griddle spreading it as you pour it (I like to use a lot of butter to create the crispy edges and added butter flavor). 4. Cook until golden brown and cooked through.

*BLUEBERRY SAUCE • 2 cups of fresh blueberries • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1 teaspoon of fresh grated lemon zest • 1/4 - 1/2 cup of granulated sugar • 1/2 cup of water 1. Combine all the ingredients in a medium sauce pan and turn heat to medium. Let the berries cook down as this will thicken naturally over time, stirring as needed. If you would like to thicken the sauce rapidly, combine 1 tablespoon of corn starch with 2 tablespoons of water, slowly add this mixture until it is the consistency you desire. Taste and adjust the sugar if needed. 2. While the Pancakes are still hot spread each cake with butter, then stacking at least three cakes high, top with real maple syrup, blueberry sauce and dust with powder sugar. Enjoy!

Transform Your Table Setting Vintage to Modern By Jessalyn Holsing | Photos by Margaret Pennock

W

hen the holiday season rolls around, it’s difficult to not fall into the same patterns or traditions that we’ve followed year after year. Traditions are a sturdy part of our lives, and we should feel proud to carry them on with a touch of creativity. Perhaps you inherited the heirloom China set that your grandparents or even great-grandparents used when you were a child? As an adult with a life and family of your own, you don’t want to stop using something vintage and comfortable – but you feel the need to express your modern view along with the traditional. You can do this! To escape potential monotony, let’s explore some various ways in which you can use traditional tableware settings and give them your spin. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas have specific color palettes, and often table settings reflect these. There’s no reason not to take matters into your own hands and create a tablescape that is both traditional and modern. If you’re lucky, your tableware is fairly neutral, and your table is now your canvas to add something bright and new. However, if color is abundant on your tableware already, consider the accent colors, and see if you can utilize those to your advantage. For example, colored drink glasses can add the desired pop to your table. Some may be tricky to find, but popular this season are emerald green and a beautiful golden orange. These excellent autumn colors can brighten the neutral tones of earthenware plates and platters. A unique centerpiece can also be the perfect accessory to modernize your classic table setting. You can use a colorful table runner down the center, perhaps even one with a unique pattern on it—stripes and gingham are both modern and elegant. Consider adding plants, some of your favorite flowers, or fruits and berries to change the traditional table setting into something unique and inviting.

34

Holiday 2023

You can even utilize non-traditional colors. Instead of using deep traditional tones, put a signature look on things by using a pastel palette—turning the reds and greens of Christmas into a softer almost pink and pistachio array. Instead of orange for Thanksgiving, you can incorporate a bright, cheery yellow. Gold and silver are both traditional, elegant accents that go beautifully with a variety of blues and purples. Lastly, don’t forget to go for a spin that REALLY says YOU! Perhaps you like a rustic aesthetic portrayed by your cloth napkins tied with a twine bow? Possibly a metal carafe for pouring water, and stoneware bowls for serving? There are many aesthetics to choose from, and they will always set a unique mood! Whatever ambiance you choose to create, make sure you transform a holiday table into your holiday table. Your holiday tablescape will surely stand the test of time in everyone’s mind with fond memories of joy, cheer, and a look that classically says YOU! n

LIVING in Wide Open Spaces Living the dream in the beautiful Brandon countryside Story and photos by Margaret Pennock

F

or April Kelling and her family, living on an acreage has been a heavenly experience. Along with her husband Jason and her two children Logan and Lana, building their life in rural Brandon has been ‘nothing short of wonderful.’ When she was just nine years old, April’s parents purchased 40 acres minutes from Sioux Falls to build their home on. According to April it was a perfect solution not only for her parents but for herself as well. She laughs, “It was their vision to live in the country and it was my dream to have a horse. They built their home on top of a hill, where they filled the acreage with all kinds of animals and raised cattle until they retired. My husband and I purchased five acres from mom and dad and built our home in the valley.” Before moving to their acreage, April and Jason had first lived in town following college but it was a shortlived experience. They spent just three short years living in close proximity with their neighbors before leaving for the allure of the openness and quietness of the country. Today, they enjoy the sounds of wildlife and their own animals including a rooster crowing, horses galloping, dog barking, birds singing and even cats fighting.

SiouxFallsWoman.net

39

Having built their home in 2000, it has seen many renovations and transformations over the years as their family grew. “We built what we could afford when we were newlyweds and have updated our home many times over the last 23 years with the latest improvements being the new horse barn,” April shares. Other changes included reclaiming a sunroom which is now used as a dining room after their children no longer needed a playroom. Renovations to the kitchen included a massive, arched and visually stunning window mounted at counter level which added both beauty and functionality to the space. In addition to the barn, they have also created an amazing outdoor living space with a gorgeous inground pool and stunning fire pit area surrounded by towering pines. “Our family enjoys our place together by spending time with our animals, enjoying the pool, the fire pit and gathering around a meal. At any time we can have a dozen or more teenagers here, as our house is the home that our kids and their friends like to gather. We are very thankful Logan and Lana and their friends enjoy hanging out at our home.”

Nature lovers, the Kellings built their home to capture and bring the outdoors in with panoramic views thanks to so many gorgeous windows. Lucious green houseplants compliment the organic, natural and airy feel April has created in nearly every room. She shares, “Our home is simple and decorated with the things we like which is nature.” Much of their time is spent outdoors working on a project or maintenance on the acreage. In fact, Jason has planted most of the trees that now surround their home. Living just down the hill from her parents for the majority of her adult life, the luxury of having her children have the ability to walk to their grandparents house to spend time with them was priceless. The proximity has been a blessing for her as well. “It has been wonderful to live so close to my mom and dad. When my kids were little, they spent a lot of time with Grandpa and Grandma. They could simply walk up and see them anytime. It has also been a blessing to be so close to my parents as they have gotten older.” With their home nestled on gently rolling hills and surrounded by some of the oldest oak trees in South Dakota, a creek gently runs through the property. She notes, “The site we built on has historical significance as three members of the family who originally homesteaded the property are buried up on the hillside. It’s pretty special.”

As for April, her love for horses has never dissipated and she has shared that passion with her daughter. “Our kids grew up riding dirt bikes and sideby-sides, snowmobiles, sledding on the hills, playing catch and hitting golf balls in the front yard, swimming, fishing in the pond and of course riding horses.” Following in her mother’s footsteps her daughter Lana is a competitive rider and is passionate about her barn companions. Because she and her daughter spend so much time in the barn it also gets special love during the holidays. April works with Tiffany of Divinely Planted Landscape and Design to bring gorgeous blooms to her property year-round as well as decorative planters for the holidays. “Tiffany does such an excellent job planting all my planters and flowers in the spring that fills our acreage with color, blooms and hummingbirds. In the winter, she designs my winter floral pots and makes our acreage feel so festive and warm. With over a dozen planters around our place, I am grateful to have her share her artistic talents with us.” Decorating for Christmas is a joy for April. She has filled her home with nature. She keeps the majority of her decorations organic, natural and simple. “I love to decorate for Christmas but we like nature to be prevalent in everything we do. This year, we added industrial, clear bulbs to our evergreens which are stunning and we plan to keep them up year round. I couldn’t do this all without the help from Tiffany at Divinely Planted and Tigh Hight with Holiday Lighting and Decor so I owe them a special thank you for helping make our home magical for the holidays.” n 44

DIY: Porch Planters for the Holidays By Jessalyn Holsing

T

he landscape alters with our colder seasons and changes the outdoors to a cold, gray/brown palette, leaving us in a monotonous, tired frame of mind. Almost all of us like it more when nature is bright, varied, colorful, and fun. Winter landscapes can make that difficult. However, all is certainly not lost! Instead of pulling your planters into the garage, emptying them, and storing them for next spring, transform them into beautiful holiday-themed planters to brighten your porch and joyfully celebrate the season. To stay with the green theme, consider a lovely evergreen shrub. These are a classic during the holiday season, and their hardy nature makes them low-maintenance. You can keep it simple by letting snowfall be the natural decorator, exhibiting a elegant green and white palette. If you want to spruce it up beyond that, add decorations and colors that complement your home and holiday theme. String lights or baubles add festive cheer, while classic winterberry holly gives a nice pop of red, making your planter stand out. Alternatively, you can add unique colors and texture by spraypainting dried branches silver or gold and nestling them in with branches and leaves of your shrubbery. Don’t stop there – use your imagination to personalize the planter! Spray paint comes in many colors, and a variety of branches or leaves can be transformed beautifully by a coat of metallic paint. Dried leaves or flowers on their own can add unique earthy tones—a great choice, 46

Holiday 2023

especially if you want a low-maintenance, easy transition between autumn and winter. Additionally, faux flowers from crafting stores provide limitless options in your favorite colors. You might even be interested in a fruit garland. Fruit has historically been part of gift-giving and other cultural traditions worldwide during the holidays - and putting together some oranges or apples will only enhance your planters. Finally, or firstly, determine the type of planter you’re planning to use. Don’t shy away from hanging baskets - be creative with sprawling plants like ivy to have a lovely cascade of leaves or pine branches with longer needles that sway gently in the breeze. If your planter is taller or more elongated, consider plants with firmer, taller branches that point proudly. These are excellent for stalks of corn at Thanksgiving and then replacing with neutraltoned dried branches or stems for Christmas. Regardless of the type of planter you choose, carefully consider the shape of your arrangement, and look for unique ways to add dimension and silhouette. Have fun with it, personalize it - it’s the holidays! Regardless of the color palette you are drawn to, the canvas of colder seasons does not mean your planters have to lack color and personality. WOMEN EMPOWERING WOMEN Engaging, Leading and Inspiring One Another is Key to Success For Financial Advisor and Founder of Impact Wealth Management Richelle Hofer, having the opportunity to help her clients save money and plan for retirement is a gift of trust that she holds dearly. The fact that thirty years ago, women working in wealth management was unheard of isn’t something that she is oblivious to. Richelle notes, “A lot of people don’t realize that it wasn’t until The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 that women gained the right to have a financial account without a male co-signer. And that it wasn’t until 1988 that women were able to take out business loans without a male co-signer. We’ve come a long way in a short time, but there is still work to do!” A nominee for EmBe’s 50th Annual Tribute to Women which is held annually in Sioux Falls, Richelle was honored to be recognized and awestruck at the roomful

of amazing women who share their extraordinary talents with the Sioux Falls community every day. “It was an incredible event and we left feeling so inspired by the remarkable women who surrounded us. Before the event, we shared supper with eight incredible women, spanning three generations. As we chatted, one of the matriarchs of the group asked about everyone’s careers. There were some young women with impressive jobs around that table and she congratulated them on their achievements.” Richelle continues, “Then she said that when she and her friends were exploring career options, it was generally assumed that women would either become teachers or nurses. That struck me so hard. Look how far we’ve come in just a few years. As we enter this holiday season full of gratitude and reflection, we want to say thank you.

Thank you to the women blazing trails and breaking glass ceilings. Thank you to the women lifting others up and inspiring us all. And thank you to the women of the Boomer generation. When I was just a little girl, you told me ‘You can be ANYTHING you want to be.’ And I believed you! It is because of your encouragement and support that I had the confidence to pursue my dreams. I am so inspired and grateful for the amazing ways that each generation leads the next, shaping a brighter future for all.” For more information about Impact Wealth Management and how Richelle and her team can help you plan for your financial future, visit letsimpactwealth.com or call 605.333.0123.

It is the time of year to protect your immune system. The arrival of COVID-19 and SARS-2 has created major disruption in the lives of people everywhere. These disruptions can be extensive, and result in increased stress, decreased sleep, and dietary deficiencies – especially during the holiday season. While the cure for viral diseases is unknown, what is known is that individuals with co-morbidities and nutritional deficiencies are at greater risk for severe outcomes. Immune Daily support is a specific formulation of nutrients that have been found to be essential for a healthy immune system, that may be deficient in many individuals. Vitamin C is critical for proper functioning of immune cells. Vitamin D has been proven that individuals with low D were more likely hospitalized with COVID-19 and 42% of Americans are deficient. Low D has been implicated in asthma and other respiratory disorders. Zinc is essential for immune-cell development and possesses several antiviral effects including inhibition of viral replication. Immune Daily Support also includes N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) which is a precursor to Glutathione which is the body’s premier antioxidant. The highest concentrations are in the liver and lungs, which both organs are essential for detoxification. Quercetin is an antiviral that binds with spike protein from COVID, reducing its ability to infect cells. Finally, echinacea helps activate the immune system. It helps keep the respiratory system healthy when challenged, particularly during the winter months.

m i l S How to Down After the Holidays By Charlotte Hofer

I

ndulgence, enjoyment, holiday parties! On average, Americans gain 1-2 pounds over the holiday season. It may not sound like much, but these small weight gains can add up over the years and cause major medical problems. According to webmd.com, over half of Americans are overweight, and this excess weight sets the stage for diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to slim down and get back on track. Getting back on track doesn’t have to mean crazy restrictions, huge sacrifices or drastic changes in your lifestyle. You don’t have to totally curtail the carbs, eat only salad, or cut the cocktails. Here are some health conscious tips for losing the holiday weight: 1. DON’T DIET. Diets just don’t work. We’re aiming for a healthy lifestyle that you can live with long-term. The problem with diets is that they often include severe calorie restriction, following a strict plan, and giving up your favorite foods. Most people don’t stick with it. In fact, research shows that dieting in general doesn’t lead to long-term weight loss. Restricting foods doesn’t work because most people fall off the wagon before you can say, New Year’s Resolution. And even if you can stick with the diet, your body will resist weight loss as your metabolism slows and the body goes into survival mode. So save yourself the stress, don’t diet. Instead, use healthy habits and practice a lifestyle you can live with for the long haul. 2. COOK AT HOME. When you cook your own meals, you can monitor exactly what you put into them, so you’re not consuming extra fats, sugar, or salt. Put an emphasis on vegetables, lean proteins, fruit, and healthy fats. Your goal is to eat minimally processed, nutrient-rich ingredients to form the bulk of the meal. Become creative–add some new

vegetables to your shopping list, and then look online for tips to make them delicious. 3. ADD VEGETABLES. Try to make vegetables the larger core part of your diet. Serve vegetables first–whether a salad before dinner, or a vegetable-based appetizer in the mid-afternoon. Keep a bag of veggies, along with cheese, fruit, or yogurt on hand for snacks. A baguette with hummus and basil, chopped chicken or salmon, or vegetable roll-ups filled with tofu, fresh vegetables and a bit of ranch dressing can keep those hunger pangs away. 4. STAY HYDRATED. Drinking water lubricates joints, carries nutrients to cells, and even prevents constipation! How much water? While 8 glasses are advised, it really depends on factors such as your weight, age, activity level, even the number of diuretics (like coffee of alcohol) you consume. 5. GET ENOUGH SLEEP. Holidays are often a whirlwind of activities and events that leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Slow down. Getting enough rest will improve your metabolism, productivity, exercise performance, overall health and even your mood. Aim for 8 hours. 6. GET RID OF THE GUILT. It’s easy to feel guilty after overindulging over the holidays. We tend to dwell on all the calories consumed, pounds gained, and alcohol consumed. The good news is, it’s in the past. Its over! If you’ve fallen off the wagon, choose to forgive yourself and move on. Avoid going overboard by cutting out all carbs/sugar and trying to succeed on 900 calories a day. Forgive yourself, move on, and start making healthy choices, starting today. The goal is to make the choices that leave you looking–and feeling–your best! n

HEAR for the Holidays Free hearing screenings in December By Virginia Olson

T

he holidays are upon us and it’s always an exciting time to get together with friends and family. However, whether it's dinner around the table, playing board games, or carolers at your door, large holiday gatherings are a challenge for people with hearing loss. Missing words, not hearing complete sentences because of background noise, or not being able to distinguish ambient sounds can take the fun out of any party. And if you can’t hear well, there is no good place to sit, stand or converse. Hearing loss affects one in eight people and approximately 37.5 million American adults, according to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. Knowing that hearing is a problem for 15% of the adult population, Midwest ENT & Allergy is offering the gift of a free hearing screening in December for anyone ages 18 and up. Their trustworthy and expert team of audiologists will evaluate your hearing and recommend a plan that is right for you or your loved one. Guests will also receive a free hearing aid evaluation if needed. Simply call them for an appointment and mention this article to receive your free screening! No strings attached!

If hearing loss is discovered, Midwest ENT & Allergy has all the latest technology to make better hearing a reality! They carry a full line of hearing treatment options at a variety of financial levels. One of the newest and most innovative hearing solutions on the market now is Earlens! Earlens is a truly novel technology, offering a big leap in sound quality. This lens-based technology was developed in 2017. The FDA-approved device is made up of three parts: a processor, which rests on the outer ear and captures sound; a customized ear tip, which converts the sound and then sends a signal to the customized hearing lens. This lens is placed by a trained otolaryngologist deep inside the ear canal near the eardrum, which then vibrates the eardrum, naturally activating the hearing mechanism.

HEALTH CARE COSTS Weighing all options and finding the best value By Virginia Olson

S

kin in the game” and “price transparency” are phrases often heard in the health care debate. They refer to reforms already in broad use to encourage consumers to comparison-shop and get better value on health care such as high deductible health plans. Though the research can be timeconsuming, consumers must find the best value out there. Perry Bly, the founder of Pernell Insurance, realizes that all the health insurance companies and products can be challenging for consumers to navigate. “I like to think that there was a time when purchasing health insurance was simple and straightforward. That probably has never been the case.” There is so much to review and consider, he says. “ “If you get health insurance provided through an employer, there will be limited choices and few options to customize coverage for your own needs. On the other hand, for people who aren’t offered employer coverage or affordable coverage there is the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which has made access to finding coverage easy and more affordable, but in some ways more difficult to understand.” Perry offers three ways to get the best value for your health care dollar: The best way to optimize your health coverage starts with using a free local consultant. I know I am biased, but I firmly believe that this is the best way to begin. Seek to consult with an experienced LOCAL insurance agent or broker if you are shopping for individual insurance. An experienced, trained, and certified knowledgeable agent can explain your options and help you understand the options to

customize your insurance which will fit your needs and budget. Agents can help you determine if you qualify for subsidies, Cost Sharing Reduction, or even Medicaid. We constantly hear horror stories about a product people find on the internet that was misunderstood or, even worse, misrepresented only to find out at claim time that the product wasn’t what the buyer expected it to be. Take the time to really consider how you utilize health care. Where do you receive your health care? How often do you expect to use your health care? The ACA made health insurance coverage the same except for where you can use it. The distinction between plans or carriers is access and networks. Narrow networks can provide tremendous value to many people and may require an individual to reconsider which doctors to see. If a person is not willing to change providers, they will need to consider the network to be certain the doctor or counselor is covered within. Consider a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA) component. I often remind people that the real reason we buy health insurance is for the maximum out-of-pocket protection that health insurance provides. Most HDHP are some of the lowest out-of-pocket limits offered. For people with large claims expectations, the simple formula of max out-of-pocket limit plus annual premium, is to buy the best value. Copays for office visits and Rx can be helpful and sometimes make care more accessible and affordable, but copays are a feature that adds cost to health insurance. HDHP, by definition, has no copay help. (Limited exceptions) Also, if you are allowed, take advantage of the tax benefits that a Health Savings Account offers. n

Foundation for Medical Care

‘Tis the

Season ‘Tis the season for pumpkin spice lattes, Christmas decorations, and coughs and congestion. As the temperatures fall, South Dakotans spend more time indoors and respiratory infections increase. Young children and those with compromised immune systems face the highest risk for a hospital stay resulting from influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID. “Our young children and babies are at a heightened risk from becoming extremely sick from respiratory viruses. Their bodies have a harder time fighting off the bug because their immune systems haven’t been exposed to the germs and developed their natural defenses,” emphasized Jess Danko MHSA, RRT, LTC-CIP, SD Project Firstline (SD PFL) program director for the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC). Keeping children up to date on vaccinations allows their immune systems to recognize viruses, prepare an internal defense, and reduce the risk of illness. Vaccinations are available for COVID, RSV, and influenza. Following basic infection prevention practices will also reduce the risk for illness.

• Frequent hand washing with soap and water • Avoid contact with individuals who are ill • Cover coughs and sneezes • Stay home when you or your child are sick Danko continued, “I have young children in my family. To best protect all of us, I take every infection control opportunity to prevent the spread of respiratory germs. Rest and over-the-counter medication can help speed up recovery, but a fever or wheezing is a sign to head to the clinic.” A whistling sound when a child breathes signals a difficulty in the airway. Children and babies have smaller lungs and airways, making it more difficult for them to fight off respiratory illnesses. Antiviral medications can help infection, if the illness is detected early. Danko further says, “As a respiratory therapist, I have seen many children severely sick with respiratory illnesses. My best advice is to keep your child hydrated when they are not feeling well, take them to the doctor when their breathing is labored, and keep the child home when they are sick.” Education and infection prevention practices help stop the spread of respiratory illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide great resources at https://www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses/index.html. Healthcare workers can find resources and education to prevent the spread of infection and germs at www.sdprojectfirstline.org.

AGE WELL, LIVE WELL Encompass Wellness Offers Hope for Patients in New Sioux Falls Clinic Mary J. Jordan, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (CNP), has dedicated her practice to identifying the root cause of health issues, not just treating the symptoms. Life is a journey, and your health and quality of life are her priority. Many chronic health issues that occur as we age are related to the deficiency in hormones. These hormone imbalances create a domino effect of health problems like fatigue, weight gain, joint pain, trouble sleeping, anxiety, brain fog, lower sex drive, ED, hot flashes, and night sweats. There are hormone receptors in every organ of our bodies and without them, we do not function optimally, which is why our health and vitality for life slowly deteriorate. Encompass Wellness offers a safe and effective treatment of hormone replacement with Biote. Biote is an all-natural form of hormone replacement of testosterone for men and testosterone and estradiol for women in the form of a pellet that is placed into the subcutaneous fat of the upper buttocks. Biote has been around since 2011, however, the use of bio-identical hormone replacement (HRT) dates back to 1939 to help women after a hysterectomy. Once the hormones are optimized, many patients report feeling like themselves again. Women with menopausal symptoms are finding relief. Men mainly notice an improvement with sleep, joint pain, ED, and fatigue. Weight gain is another issue that can cause serious health issues. Being overweight or obese can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and unhealthy cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Our weight not only takes a toll on our physical health but our mental health as well. Depression and the nagging thoughts of a negative self-image affect the quality of our day-to-day lives and relationships. Encompass Wellness offers a weight loss program with semaglutide in person or via telehealth. Semaglutide is the generic version of Wegovy that is FDA-approved. Weight loss is made effortless with Semaglutide, a once-a-week subcutaneous injection that increases insulin sensitivity, slows gastric emptying, and suppresses appetite and cravings. Many patients at Encompass Wellness express their gratitude for feeling the best they have in years and being able to enjoy doing simple things in life like walking long distances, fitting into rides/chairs, keeping up with kids and grandkids, and feeling desirable again.

Mary’s experience as an oncology nurse for seven years inspired her to add IV hydration services to help patients going through chemo replenish electrolytes lost during treatments. Many chemo patients struggle with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. IV hydration is an affordable option versus an ER visit. Zofran and Toradol along with hydration are offered as well. In addition, if you suffer from migraines, dehydration from a night out, or are pregnant and breast feeding this can help replace lost fluid.

Transforming Pain into Purpose By Natalie Slieter Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

eth Gammel knows all about having to start over. She knows that life doesn’t always follow the course you expect. But her faith has led her through dark times and ignited her passion to help other women pull themselves out of the darkness. Beth grew up near Platte, SD, with her parents - high school sweethearts - and is one of four siblings. Her family is close, even the extended family members on either side. She says that she loved growing up in a small town, and the values of hard work and faith were instilled in her by the guidance of her parents and grandparents. After graduating high school, Beth attended college in Texas and lived there for almost ten years. She got married, and her husband joined the military, which allowed them to take amazing adventures - living in many wonderful places. They had three children together - one boy and a set of twins, a boy and a girl. However, shortly after the birth of the twins, life veered from the expected path. This diversion resulted in Beth separating from her husband and packing up her toddler, infant twins, two suitcases, her shattered heart, and making the drive back to South Dakota. “I am so thankful for my family and friends who supported and encouraged me during that devastating and confusing time. Most of all, I felt God comfort my broken heart, lead me one step at a time, and provide for me in miraculous ways,” Beth shared. Beth found herself having to begin the hard work of starting over. She moved to Sioux Falls with her children and worked from home. She also turned a hobby of candle making into a job opportunity.

“I started making candles in my kitchen when I was pregnant with my oldest son who is now eight. I have always had a love for candles and how burning them creates an atmosphere that makes a house feel like home. I had this gorgeous empty jar from an expensive candle that I just couldn’t justify throwing away - I’m Dutch, and we can be pretty resourceful - so I researched and watched a lot of tutorials on candle making and poured that first candle. Since I was pregnant with my first child, I was very conscientious of what I was using in my home and wanted a clean burning candle. That played a large role in my desire to make candles that not only smell amazing but I feel good about burning in my home.”

She also became curious about human trafficking and the problem it is around the world, and even here in Sioux Falls. She attended a Call to Freedom informational luncheon and learned that survivors of human trafficking face a huge obstacle to obtaining employment. They have lengthy gaps in their resumes and legal issues or addictions, making it difficult to start over. “This resonated with me because I knew how difficult it was for me to begin again, and I couldn’t imagine how they must be feeling. I also thought of how calming and simple candle making is and how it would be perfect if we could combine the two needs of healing from trauma and employment. I didn’t know the next step, but I knew there was something God was leading me towards.”

Beth’s sister Christin worked at Simply Perfect and introduced her to owner Penny Klinedinst, which led to occasionally teaching candle-making classes at Simply Perfect after moving to Sioux Falls.

Beth shared this with Christin, who then shared it with Penny. They talked about the idea of making a freedom candle. Things became set into motion, and they started with short work shifts in the evenings with survivors, volunteers, and Simply Perfect staff and launched the Freedom Candle in the fall of 2019.

With Penny’s investment in acquiring the equipment and formulas, Penny, Christin, and Beth founded Freedom Studios at the beginning of 2020.

“I have enjoyed the process of gradually fixing it up and putting my touches on it. It is a labor of love, and all good things take time. I enjoy making a house a home. I really think that it doesn’t matter how big or small your home is, if you put love into it, it will turn into a haven for those who call it home.”

“I believe sometimes God brings certain people together at the right time to accomplish a greater purpose. Freedom Studios would have never become a reality without Penny’s generous heart and guidance and Christin’s design and photography talent.” Beth takes care of the day-to-day operations of providing therapeutic employment. She says it is an honor and privilege to work with the women and be a part of their healing journey. She gets to help them get back on their feet and watch them create a new chapter in their life. Her work at Freedom Studios isn’t the only passion in her life; her family is everything to her. She loves to make fun memories with her kids, like having weekly family fun nights, hitting the bike trails, or checking out the farmer’s market. Birthdays and holidays,

She is actively involved in Central Church and the women’s ministry there. She also has been working on updating her quaint 1930s home.

Beth walked a path she never planned on, but it allowed her to see God’s faithfulness and to keep her eyes on Him. “Life may not go as perfectly planned, but you don’t have to live the rest of your life as a victim of circumstances. We have very little control over what may happen to us, but we can always choose how we respond. Only you have the power to pick up the pen and write the rest of your story. You may not know the full story and why things happen the way they do, but you can be certain of this: your pain will never be wasted. God can still use the hard things you’ve gone through for good in your life and the lives of others if you keep looking up.” n

Knotty Flowers: A story of creation and community By Chellee Unruh Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

F

or Anna Flowers, crocheting is more than just a hobby; it’s a form of artistic expression. Every creation that comes from her shop, Knotty Flowers, is filled with love and reveals a chapter of her life’s story. Anna began crocheting in 2018 to pass the time while waiting for clients at one of her former places of employment. Being left-handed, it was difficult for her to learn from her right-handed sister-inlaw, so she turned to YouTube for instruction. Finding channels that had a mix of English and Spanish content, Anna was able to advance her crochet skills. In 2022, Anna launched her website, Knotty.Flowers initially as a platform to showcase her work to family and friends who were curious about her creations. But as time passed, she realized the potential of the platform and established an online presence - in case she decided to pursue her passions as a career. One of Anna’s favorite projects is a Shantae the Half Genie Hero doll she created for her husband. This project pushed her to learn new techniques and led her to start designing her exclusive patterns. Anna’s diverse background includes being a lab technician, a Spanish interpreter, and an optometric assistant. However, after relocating with her husband to South Dakota in 2021, she made a conscious decision to focus solely on her creative pursuits. Crafting custom crochet items and providing Spanish language assistance is now what fills her days. Being bilingual has allowed Knotty Flowers to offer a unique service - translating crochet patterns. This began when Louie of Club Crochet

needed someone to translate his work, and she eagerly stepped in. Translation adds another layer to her business, making the craft more accessible to a broader audience. “Knotty Flowers isn’t just about selling crochet items,” says Anna; “it’s about teaching and inspiring others.” She has successfully taught both left and righthanded individuals. Anna’s aspirations for Knotty Flowers are simple but profound. She wants to continue spreading the joy of crochet through education and her translation services to a diverse community. Her dream is to reach a point where her creations are self-sustainable. She invites everyone to join her on Thursdays at the Caille Branch Library, where she hosts a variety of craft-related events. Anna believes that creativity is within everyone’s reach. Crochet is more than a hobby; it’s a form of artistic expression. Anna is a talented and passionate crafter who is dedicated to sharing her love of crochet with others. She is a valuable asset to the crochet community, and her work is sure to continue to inspire and amaze for many years to come. n

What's New: Flourish Wellness & Birth Co. Midwive-owned birth center moves to a new, expanded location By Virginia Olson | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

F

lourish Wellness & Birth Co. has moved to their new location at 2908 E 26th Street, and they have been busy. The state’s first midwife-owned birth center has delivered 80 babies since opening in May of 2022.

Sisters Sarah Roe and Erin Vande Lune are the owners, and both are midwives. Both say it was an unpredictable turn in life when they made their decision to move forward with the same career. “Sara and I couldn’t have been more different when we were younger,” said Erin. “Her first major was journalism and mine was molecular biology. In 2013, I was home visiting from Haiti, and Sara and I were having a casual conversation about our careers and what we saw in maternal healthcare in both Haiti and the US. I was like, ‘we should do midwifery school’ and Sara surprisingly said, ‘Sounds great’!” Not long after, they enrolled at Frontier Nursing University. “We each did clinical training at the two major hospitals here in town. As we neared graduation, Sanford had two openings on their midwifery team and was able to hire us both,” said Sarah. “We genuinely never thought we would live in the same state let alone work together.” When Flourish opened, it was strictly women’s health, prenatal care, and postpartum. “We have since grown into a team of over 15 employees and now have a full wellness clinic. We offer care for both men and women and even have a pediatric nurse practitioner to care for children on top of full-scope pregnancy and birth care. We couldn’t have dreamed or imagined to be able to offer comprehensive health care for the entire family from a holistic and functional viewpoint.”

The main floor of Flourish’s new building has eight clinic rooms, a mother’s room, IV therapy and NST. The lower level is the birthing center with two birth suites along with a large common space and a large classroom. The midwife sisters are especially thrilled with their birthing center and say women feel empowered in this space.

“Our staff is amazing! They are compassionate and so competent. We truly have the best team that cares so much for our mamas and babies; they are beyond passionate about birth and health,” said Erin. So why is choosing a midwife and using a birthing center different from a hospital? Erin and Sara explain: “It’s very similar to home birth. The biggest difference is you come to our ‘home space’ instead of us coming to yours. In any of the situations, we have all the necessary medications and equipment to safely care for a mother and baby during the labor and delivery process - it’s warm, inviting, casual, comfy, and safe – it feels like home.” n

What's New: Perfect Zen Sound Healing Therapy The ancient art of sound healing comes to Sioux Falls By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Margaret Pennock

H

ave you ever put on a calming podcast to help you fall asleep or listened to a soothing playlist during yoga? If so, you’ve already experienced the benefits of sound healing, even if you didn’t know it.

Jana Phelps, the owner of Perfect Zen Sound Healing Therapy, has brought the ancient art of sound healing to Sioux Falls. Sound healing is a holistic practice that uses sound healing instruments and tuning forks on and off the body to create calming soundscapes that can help people relax, meditate, and heal. Drawing from her experience as a nurse who worked in pediatrics, adult, and emergency medicine in over 11 different countries, Jana has a passion for making people feel better and become their best selves. Jana became interested in sound healing after volunteering with a medical mission group in Africa 32 years ago. In many of these countries, non-traditional methods of healing were used due to the inability to secure traditional means of medicine. Jana was very intrigued by the amount of mental, emotional, and physical healing that was occurring with the use of these sound and vibration instruments and has since harnessed these time-honored practices to use in her sound healing practice. 70

Holiday 2023

The benefits of sound healing are numerous and can be incorporated with traditional medicine to achieve mind, body, soul, and spirit wellness. Sound healing can promote deep relaxation, physical pain relief, and stress reduction. Chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, joint pain, muscular pain and stiffness, and neck pain can all benefit from sound healing. Sound therapy also supports mental and emotional health and can help to alleviate symptoms of depression, grief, PTSD, insomnia, and much more by clearing the mind and restoring a sense of purpose, well-being, peace, and happiness. Jana Phelps is a down-to-earth, active, and spiritual being who simply wants people to feel better. Jana works 1:1 with her clients, taking time to listen to their individual needs. “It starts with me but ends with my clients taking control of their own health and well-being.” Jana does individual and group sound sessions or Bio-Well stress scans in her studio and can conduct special group sessions for businesses as part of a health and wellness day or special event.

If you’re looking for a way to relax and improve your overall health, consider trying a sound healing session with Jana at Perfect Zen. What's New: Midnight Spark A permanent jewelry experience By Virginia Olson | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

S

elf-expression. Celebration. Memorials. These are some of the reasons people opt for permanent jewelry. “If you are new to the concept, permanent jewelry is not as scary as it sounds,” says Caitlin Moen owner of Midnight Spark.

“A chain is made into a bracelet, anklet, ring, or necklace with the ends welded together, no clasp. There is no pain involved as there is in getting a tattoo. And technically it is not permanent since you can cut it off.” “The whole process is meant to be fun,” Caitlin explains. “First, we work with our clients to select the metal or color of the chain. We have sterling or gold-filled in yellow or rose. Then they will choose a chain style. Clients can add charms or connector pieces to create and enhance the design. Together, we customize the size to find the perfect fit. The last step is to actually the welding – we call it the ‘spark.’ Caitlin learned about permanent jewelry two years ago. “My husband and I love to travel, and we were on the East Coast. I complimented a woman’s dainty bracelet. I don’t normally love bracelets, hers was so pretty and minimal. She thanked me and told me it was a permanent bracelet. Not knowing what that meant, I asked her.” 72

Holiday 2023

The idea of permanent jewelry stuck and grew with Caitlin. She researched the idea, and her entrepreneurial spirit took over. Several months later, she bought a welder, ordered supplies, and started her business. “Permanent jewelry is more than a product; it is an experience. And its meaning is different for everyone. Someone might just like the minimal look and custom fit or create a special bond with someone. It can be to celebrate milestones or anniversaries. Whatever the meaning, it is super fun to get done!” Midnight Spark studio is in the Nordic Hall Building at 218 W. 13th Street, Suite #109 - downtown Sioux Falls. “So far, the new studio has been great, and we are enjoying the space. Nordic Hall houses several other creative businesses, so it has been a great location -and the downtown area has such great energy.” Midnight Spark celebrated its grand opening in September. Since then, it has hosted a Taylor Swift event in October and is currently gearing up for a Small Business Saturday event on Nov. 25 and teaming up with Almost Home Canine Rescue to host a fundraising event on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28. Midnight Spark can also host small private events. A permanent jewelry party is perfect for bachelorette parties, showers, birthdays, or ladies’ night. Book an appointment at midnight-spark.com. Midnight Spark is available for in-studio appointments 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday is our ‘late’ night. We are open for appointments from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. to accommodate schedules. n
