A BUTTERFLY TO REMEMBER By Emily Olson

F

or ten years AseraCare Hospice has been helping people recognize the lives of lost loved ones by hosting A Butterfly to Remember. This special event commemorates and honors the lives of loved ones lost and culminates with a release of butterflies. This year the tenth annual A Butterfly to Remember will be held, rain or shine, on June 13th at 5:30pm under the shelter at Sertoma Park. The annual event is hosted by AseraCare Hospice agencies throughout the United States and serves people in various stages of grieving who are seeking solace. It is a bittersweet and emotional time for family, friends and caregivers to come together through pain but also experiencing joy in the heartfelt celebration of the lives they have been touched by. The butterfly is fitting in the celebration as a universal symbol of hope, transition and transformation. During the release of the butterflies, names

of lost loved ones are read aloud bringing special attention to each individual being remembered. Sarah Sachen, the Executive Director of Business Development for AseraCare in South Dakota, encourages everyone in the community to participate in the event: “I would love for anyone in our community that has lost someone they love to join us in the releasing of butterflies in our loved one’s memory. I too have had great loss and it hurts deep. Here is a safe place to remember, laugh, and cry. All are welcome.” In addition to the butterfly release, the program includes bagpipes and a live performance by the Hegg Brothers. A color guard and flyover pay a special tribute to veterans. Children are also entertained with a table full of activities. A light, free meal is also served.

We offer dental care for the entire family including checkups, laser dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. New patients are always welcome!

THE PATH TO CHANGE Helping Kids Struggling with Mental Health By Natalie Slieter

T

he Sioux Empire United Way works in the Sioux Falls community to help those in need and starts new initiatives every year. The organization funds 41 agencies to maintain 80 programs in the area. This year, their new initiative is PATH, a program to help children and teenagers who are struggling with mental health. PATH stands for Providing Access to Healing. For kids that are struggling with mental health, it is often difficult to leave school to attend counseling sessions because they miss class time. This also means parents may need to leave work to take their children to the counseling sessions. In addition, counseling sessions can be expensive and parents are left with the burden of financially supporting this need. Brandi Miller is the marketing director for the Sioux Empire United Way and says that PATH is a way to make counseling services accessible to students and financially reasonable to parents. The private sessions are held at school so students do not need to leave during the day and no student is turned away due to lack of finances. “It just seemed like a really easy solution to provide those counseling sessions right at the school, Miller says.

Teachers and other school staff can refer students who would benefit from meeting with the professional counselors from Lutheran Social Services.

Dreams of having a Baby... Can come true

The initiative will be launched at the upcoming WomenUnite event on Wednesday, August 16th from 11:30am to 1:00pm at the Ramkota Exhibit Hall. Tickets cost $15 to attend the luncheon event. It is also a fundraiser for attendees to donate money to the United Way. The event is a time for women who may not hear about the organization through an employer to come together educate themselves on the opportunities that are being provided to the community. “We always try to update on the past initiatives we did, but the main focus will be talking about the mental health needs that we see and how PATH is one of the solutions for that,” Miller says. Harrisburg School District was the first to pilot the PATH program and in the last year they were able to serve 50 students with over 800 sessions. Because of their success, the pilot will expand to Canton, Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls, and Tea school districts. Students who have benefited from PATH have learned coping skills for the death of a parent, fitting in at school, and dealing with problems at home. By expanding the program to more school districts, at least 263 students will get support and learn to heal. n

LOOK TO THE WALLS FOR SIOUX FALLS HISTORY The Old Courthouse Museum’s Murals

By Thea Miller Ryan Photos by Julie Prairie Photography

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” ~ Edward Degas

OLD COURTHOUSE MUSEUM 200 W. 6th Street, Sioux Falls www.siouxlandmuseums.com

M

urals can be found all over Sioux Falls—at City Hall, Meldrum Park, on the side of buildings like Black Sheep Coffee and inside the Saint Joseph Cathedral. Like a poster on a bulletin board, people become used to them and sometimes don’t even notice the messages, or sometimes mysteries, that the larger-than-life art shares. There are 16 murals in the Old Courthouse Museum on 6th Street and Phillips Avenue. They’re right out in the open and thousands walk past them annually on their way to see the historical objects the museum displays. Adam Nyhaug, registrar at Siouxland Heritage Museum encourages people to take notice and, “Look to the walls for some of Sioux Falls’ best history lessons.” The murals were painted by Norwegian immigrant Ole Runing, who moved to Sioux

Falls in 1914 and ran an art studio from his home in the 500 block of South Spring Avenue. According to courthouse records, it took Runing two years to complete 12 large and four smaller murals on the first and second floors of what was then the Minnehaha County Courthouse. The $500 commission was important to the artist. When he immigrated to the United States in 1906 he brought seven children with him. Four more were born in the next 8 years and he often ran short of money. He worked as a night watchman, a car salesman and at various local farms to cover his expenses, according to Siouxland Heritage Museum records. The falls of the Big Sioux River and the Palisades rock formations near Garretson are painted on the walls of the courthouse. On the first floor of the building Runing

painted pioneer scenes from the area. On the second floor he painted whatever he could imagine, including a herd of bison in a blizzard, a castle overlooking a lake, Norwegian landscapes and other whimsical scenes.

Museum, several smaller paintings have been donated to the museum. These paintings reflect his range of experiences: from his youth in Norway, to his time in Minnehaha County, and even his final years spent in California.”

The mural on the landing of the courthouse’s secondary staircase is quite a bit different than the others. It depicts a rock formation in New Hampshire called, “The Old Man of the Mountain.” In the foreground is a portrait of retired Dell Rapids banker, P.S. Gordon, who came from New Hampshire.

Runing left Sioux Falls for the Pacific Coast in 1920. He finally settled down in southern California and continued to paint until his death in 1951.

Adam said, “It’s been exciting over the last several years to see our community begin to recognize Runing’s importance and influence as an artist. Beyond his massive murals on the walls of the Old Courthouse

The murals, like many old pieces of art, had layers of dirt and grime build up over the years. Conservation of the art is always on the mind of museum officials. In 1989 the mural on the main staircase was restored by trained conservators. Old layers of varnish and dirt were removed and the artist’s original intent once again graces the walls. n

ADRENALINE

JUNKIE DATES

Get Your Hearts Pumping in More Ways Than One By Chellee Nemec

W

hether you just started dating someone or you are looking to reignite the fire in your relationship, an adrenaline date might be a great date option for new adventure together. Research studies conducted at McKendree University have found that increased levels of adrenaline also increase attraction between individuals. Before you snap your harnesses together and jump out of a plane, consider these tips to get your significant other on board for an adrenaline-charged adventure that won’t totally freak them out. DIP YOUR TOES IN THE WATER When planning your first active date, choose something that you are both familiar with and is within your physical ability. This could be something as easy as biking or walking around the trails of Sioux Falls. When you are ready to step it up a notch try hiking. There are some great local locations for hiking such as Good Earth State Park (12 miles east of Sioux Falls), Newton Hills State Park (five miles south of

Canton, SD) or Palisades State Park (25 miles northeast of Sioux Falls in Garretson). TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL After a couple of gear-up dates take it to the next level with a more thrill-seeking adventure such as going on a hot air balloon ride. Newly married Bret and Angie Levene took a hot air balloon ride on their honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Angie shared, “Bret is not a fan of heights and I don’t mind them so it was a great adventure for us to try.” The take off and the landing were intense, but the rest of the ride was very peaceful! We really enjoyed it! It is definitely something we will do again!” You don’t have to fly all the way to the Dominican to go on a ballooning date, Prairie Sky, Inc. has been offering scenic balloon flights in the Brandon valley since 1994. Find out more at www.flyprairiesky.com If you are looking for something a bit more extreme than a balloon ride, you could try skydiving. This kind of extreme dating not only releases adrenaline, but it also floods

the brain with dopamine, a chemical released when you are falling in love. What’s great about a date like this is that you will associate the intense rush with each other, forging a strong bond and creating a fun memory. Sky Adventures offer classes to get you ready for your first jump. To learn more visit their website at www.skyadventures.net If you are looking for an adrenaline pumping date that is more exciting than ballooning but not as intense as sky diving, then rock climbing might be a great alternative. Palisades State Park offers rock climbing with certified instructors. To learn more about this adventure visit sylvanrocks.com.

ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE / ADVERTISING SALES FT or PT. Sales experience is a plus. Must be a selfstarter, driven, reliable, honest, a relationship builder and have the ability to meet goals. Send resume to Jared@siouxfallswoman.net

SAVE IT FOR LATER If you are just started dating or you are trying to re-light a flame, avoid sports that require a lot of patience to learn. Learning a new sport can be frustrating and awkward when are just getting to know someone. If you a couple trying to reconnect, learning a new sport on a date could add strain, so save it for when you have you are going out on a group date with friends so no one feels put on the spot. STICK TOGETHER Don’t leave each other in the lurch. When doing something that can be a bit scary stay close to each other and offer playful encouragement. Push each other a little but keep if fun. Reward each other for testing your limits with a cold cocktail or a delicious appetizer later on. It will be fun to talk about your adventure together over food and drinks. ALWAYS BE PREPARED Make sure that you bring things along that will keep your date safe. Bring your phone or wear a watch. Limit the activity to under a couple hours so you don’t get overwhelmed or exhausted. Pack a safety kit including snacks, first aid, sunscreen and water. A change of clothes and some deodorant are also a great idea. When infusing adrenaline into your body you are bound to sweat so having some deodorant and a change of clothes to freshen up makes going out for food and drinks to celebrate your adventure together easier. So when you are ready to infuse your next date with some adrenaline, try these great local resources and have fun. You just may become adrenaline junkies together! n

WEDDING MAKEUP FIRST AID KIT

No matter how much you plan for your big day, or how detailed your itinerary is, there’s no stopping wedding day surprises! Wedding day makeup is important; with these helpful tips, brides and create a makeup survival kit that will cover contingency supplies. 1. Blotting sheets: Of course you’re nervous,

but you don’t want to let them see you sweat. Blotting sheets absorb excess oil in your T-zone area, allowing your foundation to stay looking fresh and clean. 2. Makeup remover wipes: Tears and kisses

on your cheek are inevitable. Makeup remover wipes will quickly clean up any mascara streaks, or your grandmother’s coral lipstick smooch. Small under eye swipes and light pressure sweeps across your cheek will leave you flawless. 3. Setting spray: The secret to longevity

with your foundation is setting spray. When foundation or powder mix with the pH balance with your skin it can cause your make up to spread, leaving foundation uneven. Several small mists of setting spray will immediately seal your foundation up to a fearless 12 hours. 4. Lip gloss: Retouching your lip color

throughout the day is a must with cameras flashing and unannounced snapchatting. Keeping up on your lip color will keep your lips moisturized and looking vibrant in every photo. 5. Small hand bag: Keeping your items close to you is a must and equally important is keeping them close in style. Brides don’t have time to dig in a purse to find these items so keep a small clutch or tote close to be saved in a “just in case” moment.

This kit is fun and easy to make, and it can be customized for your specific needs. Whatever your kit might include, you can never be over prepared when you want to look breathtaking for your amazing day. n

BEAUTIFUL SUMMER STYLES By Brianna Venekamp Photos by Reistroffer Design | Art Directed by L. Dezign

This season’s beautiful summer styles encourage comfort and individual expression. SUNDRESSES Summer’s most versatile piece, the sundress, is popular this season in gingham, bright bold colors, and headto-toe floral. Keep it casual with flat sandals or add heels to dress it up. COLOR-WISE Yellow and pink top the color wheel chart this season. Candy pink, baby pink, deep cherry and raspberry provide a rose-colored view, while lemon to fluorescent yellow will brighten up wardrobes everywhere. SUIT UP There is something attractive about having suit pieces as part of your wardrobe. They immediately add maturity and a sense of professional style to work or a day strolling about the town. This summer’s trends offer several choices, from oversized blazers matched with miniskirts, to the more prim and proper look.

CUT-OUTS There are dresses with strategically placed cutouts and then there are dresses that look like someone got scissor happy and sliced up random areas. Either way, one-shouldered silhouettes offer a fresh upgrade to the off the shoulder look and strategically placed cutouts create maximum impact and beauty.

LADIES & CARS: VEHICLES THAT MAKE YOUR ADRENALINE RUSH By Jill Funke 2017 FORD MUSTANG COUPE

No one can deny the urge to rev the engine of the classic Ford Mustang, and each new generation brings even more temptation. The 2017 Ford Mustang Coupe is no exception. This Mustang’s packing a 3.7 liter V6 engine under the hood, which translates into 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque for quick acceleration. Showcasing its concentration on performance are the Mustang’s aerodynamic body style and dual exhaust pipes. Inside, the combination of a low seat, manually telescoping and tilting steering column relay nothing but optimal control for the driver. 2017 BMW M240XI CONVERTIBLE

Pairing the class of a BMW with the freedom of a convertible, the BMW m240xi is sure to take your breath away. Owners will enjoy the luxury features that they’ve come to expect from a BMW, including heated, twelve-way driver and passenger front seats, rear view camera and navigation system, and electric power assist speedsensing steering. On the exterior, bodycolored front and rear bumpers, a black grille with chrome surround and black-

trimmed side window and front windshield will make spectators watching you do a double take. 2017 FORD EDGE

Who says having a family means you move to the realm of boring vehicles? The 2017 Ford Edge is a crossover SUV that still has the power to make your pulse race just thinking about it. Comfortably transporting five passengers, the Edge boasts a notable 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space, or 73.4 cubic feet when the rear seats are down. With this array of space, it is a nice surprise to find that the Edge still feels and operates like a sporty sedan. 2017 MERCEDES BENZ C63S COUPE

This coupe design built purely for performance is sure to get your motor running. The 4.0L V8 biturbo engine in the Mercedes Benz C63s coupe has one thing on its mind: speed. Yet the powerful performance of the vehicle is matched by the artistic sculpting of its body, and the spectacular view from its panoramic glass sunroof. Illuminated door sills and brushed aluminum driver pedals are two of a long list of opulent features to be found on the interior of this must-have coupe. n

5 FIT FOODS FOR SUMMER Story, photos & recipes by Ashley Sornsin

A

fter much anticipation, summer is finally here! Which also means the dreaded bikini season has also arrived. This summer, let’s commit to fully embracing the season (bikinis and all)! We are all on a journey when it comes to health and fitness and know the importance of a positive mindset and all the benefits of exercise. However, time and time again, making smart nutrition choices plays an 80% role in the success (or failure) of the results we achieve. The sayings, ‘you are what you eat’ and ‘abs are made in the kitchen,’ definitely have merit. In order to live a healthy and fit life, we need to make daily choices that support this lifestyle. Staying healthy and fit all summer long is possible! I’ve put together my list of 5 fit foods for summer that will encourage your healthy and fit lifestyle. There are many ways to incorporate these foods, but I’ve provided some of my favorite healthy recipes. These recipes are easy to make and taste great. Here’s to a healthy, fit and delicious summer!

Turmeric

Turmeric has been surrounded with a lot of buzz lately regarding its antiinflammatory properties and antioxidants. It’s a healing spice that together with a few other spices allows the body to easily absorb and reap the benefits. I’ve created a healthy and fit way to enjoy turmeric this summer with a tropical antiinflammatory protein smoothie. You’ll get a refreshing smoothie that’s perfect for breakfast or post-workout and packs a nutritional punch! TROPICAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROTEIN SMOOTHIE (makes 1 serving) • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I use Vegan Vanilla Shakeology) • 1 frozen banana, cut into chunks • ½ cup mango, frozen or fresh cut into cubes • 6 ice cubes • ½ t turmeric • ¼ t ginger • ¼ t cinnamon • dash black pepper Directions: Combine all ingredients into high powered blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Lemons

Lemons are nutritional powerhouses. They’re packed with vitamins and have detoxifying, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits. Not to mention, lemons are incredibly refreshing. If you’re like me and buy a bag of lemons, use two and then forget to use the rest, here is a great way to use them. These lemon detox ice cubes can be added to a glass of water or smoothie. Keep these on hand in the freezer and use at least one a day in a glass of water to benefit from this detoxing fruit!

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are tiny, but mighty as they are packed with fiber, protein and one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They absorb 10 times their weight in water, which allows them to form a gel. When consumed the body becomes full faster, meaning you’ll most likely eat less. Strawberry and rhubarb are classic summer flavors typically found in high calorie desserts. I’ve taken these fruits, added some natural sugar from honey along with chia seeds to create the perfect summer jam to use on toast, or my favorite, a spoonful topped on a bowl of overnight oats. I don’t think you’ll be buying jam again after making this! STRAWBERRY RHUBARB CHIA JAM • 2 cups strawberries, cut • 1 cup rhubarb, cut • ¼ c honey • pinch sea salt • 2 T chia seeds • 1 t vanilla Directions: In sauce pan, stir together berries, rhubarb, honey and salt. Bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. Reduce heat and mash fruit with a potato masher until smooth. Add chia seeds, stirring frequently for 10 minutes. Mixture should thicken. Remove from heat and add vanilla extract. Allow to cool uncovered for a of couple hours. Store in jars for up to 2 week in refrigerator or 2 months in freezer.

LEMON DETOX ICE CUBES (makes 1 tray of ice cubes) • 3 whole lemons, cut into wedges • 1/3 cup water Directions: Cut lemons into wedges and add to blender. Add 1/3 cup water and blend until lemons (peel and all!) have a smooth consistency. Pour into an ice cube tray and freeze. Pop out and use.

Chickpeas

Cucumbers

SIMPLE SEA SALT ROASTED CHICKPEAS (approx. 2 cups) • 1 can chickpeas • 1 T extra-virgin olive oil • 1 t sea salt

CUCUMBER NOODLE SALAD • 2 English cucumbers, spiralized (or sliced very thin) • ¼ cup rice vinegar • 1 T sesame oil • 1 T honey • 1 t sea salt • 2 T sesame seeds

These legumes are an amazing ‘fit’ superfood. They’re a great mix of protein, fiber and complex carbs that help to fill you up while controlling blood sugar levels that maintain energy. The roasted chickpea recipe that follows, is a perfect summer snack to replace other processed junk foods. This fit food is a fat burner that will help you in your wellness journey. Snacking never felt and tasted so good!

Directions: Drain chickpeas and rinse. Dry between paper towels. Line a pan with foil and set oven to 400 degrees. Combine all ingredients and spread onto pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until crispy. Store in a glass jar at room temperature for 1 week.

This fit food is packed with water, which means eating it on a hot summer day will help hydrate the body. ‘Cool as a cucumber’ is actually backed with research that suggests cucumbers help to cool inflammation in the body. Taking a spin on the often-sliced vegetable, I’m a fan of spiralizing my veggies. Cucumber noodles are refreshing and a crisp new way to eat some of our favorite summer salads, like this light and fresh recipe below.

Directions: Spiralize cucumbers into noodles (or sliced very thin). Squeeze noodles dry with paper towels. Whisk together the next 4 ingredients and pour over cucumber noodles in bowl. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Allow to marinate as flavors develop for 30 min before serving.

TINNER’S PUBLIC HOUSE A New Neighborhood Favorite Delivers Friendly Atmosphere, Delicious Food Story and photos by Margaret Pennock

G

eorge Christopulos knows that it takes more than good food to make a restaurant a step above being a place to grab a bite to eat. At the newly renovated Tinner’s Public House, not one detail was overlooked in this endeavor. Classic high-back banquets instill intimacy for diners under rustic industrial lighting with walls clad in chevron barn wood. A new menu filled with delicious foods from traditional American fare to their specialty Greek Souvlaki marks it as decidedly different and unique for Sioux Falls. And of course, an extensive bar menu with daily happy hours make it a neighborhood favorite to hang out and unwind. According to George, “Tinner’s Public House is a neighborhood restaurant bar and Sioux Falls is our neighborhood. We specialize in great food and a caring staff, which has built a loyal clientele. Rethinking Local Food

L-R: John, Dane, Reagan and Jaclyn Horter.

There’s no such thing as a typical day on the farm for John and Jaclyn Horter. With two young children to chase, cattle to feed and crops to grow, the Horters never know what to expect from day to day. It’s a challenging and rewarding life that demands healthy and nutritious food to fuel their bodies. John is the fifth generation in his family to grow soybeans and corn, and raise cattle near Andover, South Dakota. He started farming with his father in 2000 after graduating from college. He met Jaclyn through match.com, introduced her to life on the farm, and she fell in love with it all. Like most farmers, family and the future are vital to the Horters. John and Jaclyn want their children to grow up connected to the land and animals so they can take over the family business one day. They take pride in growing food to feed their family and other families in South Dakota, and they share that passion with their kids.

“Buying locally grown food at farmers markets and stores is a great way to support farmers in our community, but just because it doesn’t have a label doesn’t mean it didn’t come from a local source,” says Jaclyn. “We feel very blessed to have so many choices when it comes to finding safe and healthy food for our family.” The Horters converted a feed bunk into a garden where they grow some of their own vegetables. They also eat meat from the cattle they raise. What they don’t get from their own farm, they buy at the grocery store. Many of the products there didn’t travel far to reach the shelves. For example, the entire farm-to-shelf trip for a gallon of milk in South Dakota can take only two days and 115 miles.

advertorial John says no matter where the food is grown or how big the operation, he knows farmers seek ways to improve farming practices. The farmers at farmers markets are great sources of information about how food is grown. They put just as much care into growing corn and soybeans on a large scale as they do the fresh vegetables they bring to the market. Another great local resource for South Dakota families to seek answers to their questions about food, farming and to find fun recipes is Hungryfortruthsd.com. You can read more about the Horters and watch adorable crop reports from their son Dane. Brought to you by South Dakota soybean farmers and their checkoff.

HOME ON THE RANGE By Jennifer Dumke Photos by Margaret Pennock

ust a hop, skip and a jump away and you’ll find this classic ranchstyle home sitting amidst the rolling prairie and winding creeks that define country-style living in South Dakota. Everything about this home feels laid back and relaxing but the efforts and work put into designing and building this home was anything but. Homeowner Deb Ollerich helped design her dream house in 2009 with homebuilder Dan Kistler, owner of Kistler Construction. A perfect blend of beauty and budget were taken into high consideration as Ollerich and Kistler worked through the details of the home. “I originally wanted a log home,” says Ollerich. “But that wasn’t in the budget so we made adjustments where we could to give the same feel without the expense.” The modifications included a knotty pine vaulted ceiling, rustic lumber ceiling beams and hand-scraped hardwood floors. The kitchen is a blend of textures, tones and materials that all come together to create a functional space for daily living and entertaining. To add an element of timeless elegance, traditional knotty alder cabinets from StarMark Cabinetry Kitchen

were stained a dark, rich hue with dual tone rope accenting at the top. Keeping budget in mind, Ollerich was resourceful in selecting her black appliances and designing the kitchen’s focal point island. “You heard of a bone yard,” says Ollerich with a smile. “That’s where I got the granite.” By focusing on using higher end products selectively, Ollerich could create a customized island that features a myriad of products from copper to laminate. “I wanted to integrate natural stone into the kitchen somehow,” she adds. “Selecting remnants was a great way to do it.” Finishing off the space is wrought iron lighting from Mahlander’s Inc. and a touch of historic flair with stained glass pendant lights to illuminate the center island.

Great room

Leading into the great room, a casual eating area features a table perfect for larger family gatherings and entertaining. Filled with natural sunlight and rustic touches, the great room is where classic meets country. Large windows are left simply unadorned and patio doors lead to an upper deck where picturesque views of the horizon are breathtaking. Rich, handscraped wood floors, from Thornton Flooring, add a dramatic element that fits with the décor while taking maintenance into account. The main centerpiece of the space is the fireplace. Yet another custom creation designed by homeowner Ollerich and builder Kistler, it features a drystacked stone surround that is capped off with a rustic timber mantle. “We worked together to create just the right look,” says Ollerich of the final product. “We didn’t have a plan. He just started putting on the rock and we made decisions based on what looked the best.” Soft upholstered furniture and subtle westernstyle flair complete the space and provide the right amount of design and comfort.

Conveniently located off the great room, the master bedroom remains understated and comfortable. The eye is immediately drawn to a Victorian style settee at the foot of the bed. Despite its elegance, Ollerich claims she just needed somewhere to take her boots off. The western twist works alongside the knotty pine furniture with slate accents and hand-scraped hardwood floors. The master bathroom features a hint of color with cinnamon toned accent walls. Warm hues from the tile add drama to the floor and are replicated in the custom walk-in shower. Matching sinks are finished off with black-framed mirrors and coordinating wall sconces. Master bedroom

Another area where Ollerich used her budget-friendly finds is the main floor full bathroom. A handcrafted rebar cabinet showcases an elegant piece of granite from Syverson’s Tile & Stone. This costsaving solution stretched the dollar and ultimately design. A hammered copper vessel sink and oil-rubbed bronze faucet were added to the thrifty cabinet for a truly one-ofa-kind piece. Another area where Ollerich saved cents was by doing all the wall painting and staining and installation of the trim. “This home was definitely a lot of work but thanks to our accommodating builder and the help from friends and family, it all came together. And the best part is this home continues to save Ollerich money. Thanks to geothermal heating and air conditioning, installed by A-1 Plumbing, her heating and cooling bill remain very economical for the size of the home.

Family room - lower level

Wet bar - lower level

Additional timber from Whitewood, South Dakota was also cut down to create the floating style stairs that lead to the finished lower level. The perfect spot for family living, entertaining or simply relaxing, this area is as unique as it is adaptable. Neutral tones continue the walls to keep the space bright. With the help of multiple oversized windows and patio doors that lead to a sprawling backyard, outdoor views are ample. Laminate floors that replicate wood was applied directly to the concrete by Ollerich, another penny-saving solution that adds to the ranch style feel. A dedicated gaming area breaks up the large space and is another recreational feature of the lower level. Whether playing a game of pool or watching movies, Ollerich was sure to include a “refreshment station” in the home design. This custom corner is stocked with beverages and snacks for family-friendly living. With salvaged wood from her grandfather’s barn, the rustic bar takes a bold turn with bright red walls, a wood slab countertop and small replicated tin roof. To add nostalgia, wrought iron hardware along the bar incorporates real horseshoes. “This bar definitely has a lot of meaning,” says Ollerich. Once you have your snacks and soda, head into the theatre room to watch a flick on the rear projector television screen complete with full theatre surround sound. Tiered floors accommodate overstuffed upholstered recliners while movie posters on the walls add a whimsical touch. An additional full bath is perfect for family and guests with an oversized bath tub and rustic wood accents. Walking through the sprawling ranch, it’s obvious the amount of work invested from both homeowner and builder. From copper countertops to timber beams, wrought iron horseshoes to tin ceilings, this home on the range is a stunning collaboration of rustic beauty, quality building and cost-saving solutions. n

reating this bathroom space in an 1892 brownstone home was not a simple remodel project. The room had no floors or walls— only studs. Keith Morgan with Bespoke created a space from nothing to what it is today, incorporating the practical things the homeowner wanted the room to achieve.

transitionless shower. As an internal room with no windows, several lighting options were necessary. Keith incorporated sunken floor lights that provide up-lighting against the walls, perimeter downlighting along the ceiling panels, and task lighting around the mirror. The mirror is also heated to prevent condensation.

Sycamore edging in the woodwork is just one example of the esthetical and textural value of the material composition subtly paired to make the room beautiful. The semi-textural floor on the full limestone walkway adds grip to a floor with a

The walls are large-scale split-faced limestone, and the countertop is Calcutta gold marble. The wood on the vanity and middle architectural piece is ziricote. Due to pipes that couldn’t be moved, Keith split the 5-by-12-foot galley-style space into two sections to

a b o u t t h e h o u s e | home keep the ceiling an architecturally interesting feature. Sunken into the wall, shelved space internally made of rosewood was added as storage on both sides of the room divide. The shower area itself is very simple with its transitionless floor—a glass plate was installed into the stone and the shower head drops down between the overhead ceiling panels. Five separate diamond-cut ceiling panels of walnut under a Burmese teak surface demonstrate why both materials were cut together: to get to the walnut under the surface, adding definition to the look. Two texturally different materials—a smooth slab of marble and custom piece of nickel—make up the faucet for the body spray controls. The functional details of the room are incorporated in a way that they simply cannot take away from the immaculate design work because they are not even visible. The extraction fan system that removes steam, for example, is hidden in a gap between ceiling panels. Slots were integrated into the pull-out drawer from the vanity to accommodate the two different types of disposable tissues the homeowner likes to use. The elegant design makes the end results much more than just a bathroom—it luxuriously indulges the senses, making the bathing experience one of pleasure and pampering. n

njoy using fresh herbs all summer long with an container herb garden on your deck, patio or balcony. Container herb gardens are easy to create and even easier to maintain. Aside from the culinary or healing function of herbs, they create a beautiful, aromatic addition to any outdoor space. Creating an herb garden with kids provides a great introduction to gardening and there are many ways for them to be involved creatively, such as making stakes to label the plants or even or a garden ornament to provide some whimsy. CONTAINER HERB GARDEN: 1. Select your herbs. It is recommended to plant herbs in the same pot that have similar light and watering requirements, but I have had success with all varieties of herbs in a single container. As plans start to droop, give them water individually as needed rather than the entire container. 2. Use a planter that will provide enough room for your herbs to be planted several inches apart. Drill holes for drainage in the bottom of the planter. 3. Fill the bottom of the container with rocks to allow for drainage. If your pot is deeper than

necessary, use a lightweight filler, such as pinecones to displace some soil. 4. Use a quality potting soil that will provide drainage. Dampen the soil so that it is evenly moist throughout without seeming muddy. 5. Create holes large enough for the entire root ball to fit. After removing the plants from their original containers, gently loosen the roots without causing them to tear. Place in the holes and backfill with soil, generously mounding around the base of the plant. 6. Give a light watering to all of the herbs and they are ready to grow! BUTTERFLY GARDEN ORNAMENT: 1. Paint the wood hearts. 2. Using a hobby knife, cut vertical notches into the cork deep enough to insert the hearts about ¼”. 3. Apply high quality glue, such as E6000, to the notches in the cork and on the edges of the heart. Insert the shapes into the cork. 4. Insert small nails at the top of the cork as antennae for the butterfly. 5. Cut a piece of 14 gauge wire approximately 1½ feet long and wind into a spiral that resembles a tornado, more tightly wound at one end and gradually getting larger. At the wide end, bend about 1 inch of the tip at a 90 degree angle pointing away from the spiral. 6. Poke a hole into the bottom of the cork and apply a dot of E6000 glue and insert the vertical tip of the wire. 7. Push the narrow end of the coil down into the dirt several inches with a rotating motion similar to a screw. Pack the dirt around the wire to secure. n

TRAVEL: THE BESPOKE EMPLOYEE BENEFIT THAT GIVES BACK BeSpoke owner Keith Morgan strives to provide his staff with experiences that inspire good work outcomes, encouraging his team to be engaged and committed to a lifetime artistic career. Keith explains that the maturity of the end product created by BeSpoke is directly dependent on having a well-cared for team. Quite simply, having satisfied employees leads to better results. One return on investment he sees from this is low staff turnover. Another is more creative employees. For Keith, a big part of “taking care of the team” is bringing them to places and providing them with life experiences that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Opening people’s minds and exposing them to a wide variety of people, places, and cultures keeps the creative process continually evolving. The BeSpoke goal is to provide clients with a welcoming home environment. Designing the space people come home to – the place they go to get away from everything they deal with every day – is a very intimate process, Keith says. Design develops through experience and mental growth, stimulation, evolution,

and cognitive development, which is very difficult to do if you only ever stay in any one spot on a planet. In the spaces BeSpoke creates, clients get satisfaction for a long period of time, so it is important they are created with integrity of creativity. The ability to visualize unique designs is paramount to the experience BeSpoke provides clients. Reaching the top of your potential is so much about experiencing other cultures – it means not having an isolationist mentality. Creativity comes from exposure, keeping designers from being creative plagiarists. Original composition is creating something from nothing – from scratch. Humans are products of environment. Curiosity carries over into creativity and generates well-rounded individuals. Travel ultimately develops the mind. “That’s a huge part of the reason we take staff on trips with us. It doesn’t change everybody, but I feel my life’s experiences have developed my sense of design, style, and what I do,” Keith says. The more the staff are exposed and mentally stimulated beyond the work itself – from outside experience – the better their outside advantage. Keith wants his staff to have just that. “Our benefits package is quite different from other places,” he explains. After taking the team on a trip, they come back feeling inspired and wanting to push their skillset further, Keith says. “That directly benefits our customers, and that makes [my staff] more and more valuable.” Keith invests in his team in this way, helping them reach the capacity to be – and do – more. “Mental focus is very important in our line of work, even if you have skill with your hand.” The team’s combined experiences build a creative foundation to be able to do things that simply look better. Because of this, travel is a BeSpoke employee benefit ultimately for the advantages it provides the customer.

GET IMMUNIZATIONS TO PROTECT YOUR WHOLE FAMILY By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health

W

ith the close of the school year on the horizon, a rush of kids will make their appointments for annual physicals and well-child checks. Immunization shots are another important part of keeping children and teens ready for summer as well as the next school year—summer goes fast! But kids aren’t the only ones who need to keep up with their shots—adults also are at risk for illnesses immunizations can effectively prevent. That’s the word from Ashley VanDyke, DO, Avera

74

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2017

Medical Group family physician. She said some vaccinations, including tetanus and pertussis, need to be updated regularly throughout adulthood so that we maintain a continued immunity. “We want kids to stay healthy, but part of ensuring your child’s health is also staying healthy yourself,” VanDyke said. “Vaccination for things such as the flu and whooping cough can help you do that. I encourage all parents to discuss vaccinations their family physician. They can explain recommendations and answer your questions.”

Here’s a rundown of which immunizations are necessary at certain ages:

Fifth and sixth grade: Physicians recommend that kids ages 11-12 get three vaccines: Tdap, the booster immunization against tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria; the HPV vaccine that prevents several types of cancers; and the meningitis vaccine. High School: Adolescents ages 16– 18 should visit their physician for a meningitis booster.

Before kindergarten: Children ages 4-6 should receive four vaccines, including the DTaP, which prevents tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and diphtheria (bacterial infection); MMR, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella; varicella, that wards off chicken pox; and the polio vaccine.

Adults: Men and women ages 19–60 should get a TdaP booster every 10 years. Recently physicians have seen an increasing number of children and infants diagnosed with whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory sickness. The number of whooping cough cases reported in 2014 increased 18 percent from the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many infants who get pertussis get it from caregivers and siblings who might not even know they have the disease. VanDyke said boosters for other members of the family can prevent that.

Grill for it!

“One of the best ways to stop the spread of whooping cough in infants is to ensure parents, family members and anyone coming into contact with baby has been vaccinated,” VanDyke said. “Ask your provider if you are in need of a Tdap booster, especially if you are around infants and children.” Adults (ages 60 and older) should discuss with their doctor shingles and pneumonia vaccinations. Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, and it’s the same virus that causes chicken pox. If you’ve ever had chicken pox, the virus can reactivate years later as shingles. n

LET’S CLEAR THE AIR New Middle Ear Procedure Offers Clarity and Relief

By Jennifer Dumke

M

By Jennifer Dumke

ost people aren’t aware how many times their middle ear tube opens and closes. But when it malfunctions, it doesn’t take long to notice a potentially serious problem. Called the Eustachian tube, it connects the middle ear space with the back of the nose. It’s regular opening and closing is spurred from muscles in our throat, jaw movements and swallowing which allows proper ventilation. It also maintains changes in atmospheric pressures outside the ear often associated with both high and low altitudes such as air travel, mountain hikes and especially during diving activities. For some, regardless of their activities or atmospheric pressure, their tube malfunctions on a regular basis. This condition, called Eustachian tube dysfunction,

76

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2017

or otherwise known as ETD, leaves sufferers with chronic pain, discomfort and dulled or loss of hearing. Thanks to a new procedure called Balloon Tuboplasty, improved tube function of the Eustachian tube offers a new sense of relief. Gregory Danielson, MD is a boardcertified otolaryngologist at Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat, and has performed this procedure with positive outcomes with his patients. “This option is very well tolerated with minimal risk,” says Dr. Danielson. However, with any new technology, there is a learning curve especially when it comes to making sure patients are properly selected. Currently, the procedure is done only in an operating room setting. It consists of passing a catheter through

the nose into the tube where a balloon is inflated for two minutes. Aftercare is minimal and most patients don’t feel significant pain. But it can take up to two months for the Eustachian tube function to normalize. “The results of this technique show that the dilation of the Eustachian tube is a safe and simple procedure, and it represents a good treatment option. We are seeing success rates in over half of the patients we have treated,” adds Dr. Danielson. Even though ETD affects people of all ages, the tuboplasty has only been given to adults. But with emerging technology and continued testing, Dr. Danielson says he sees this being an option for sufferers of all ages. “In the future, it may be offered to pediatric patients or as an office procedure done with local anesthesia,” he adds, which would allow more sufferers potential relief. n Nicole Miller • Bailey44 • Milly • Alice & Olivia • Three Dots • Black Halo • Commando • DL1961 • James Jeans JJ Winters • FRAME • McGuire Denim • Laundry by Shelli Segal • LIKELY • Cinq à Sept • BCBGeneration Imagine by Vince Camuto • Lola Cruz • Pedro Garcia • Pour la Victoire • Lucky Star • Gimo’s • Artico • Rock ‘N Karma

LOSING SLEEP Why Hitting Middle Age Might Leave You Feeling Tired By Erin Heinert, Sanford Health

S

leep is a wonderful thing. It leaves you refreshed and ready to take on whatever the next day brings. So when you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep, it can ruin your plans. For many women, reaching mid-life can create a perfect storm for sleep disturbances. HORMONES Average age of menopause is 52. This natural transition changes the hormonal composition of a woman’s body often causing hot flashes and night sweats, which can affect the quality of a woman’s sleep. But it’s not just these symptoms that can affect sleep.

78

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2017

“We are now learning more and more about how hormonal fluctuations impact sleep,” explains Dianna Puttmann, a women’s health nurse practitioner with Sanford Women’s. Most women go through perimenopausal hormone changes up to 10 years prior to the cessation of their menstrual cycles. These changes can disrupt sleep even before signs such as hot flashes emerge.” MENTAL HEALTH Mental health conditions can affect every aspect of your life, and that includes your sleep patterns. Women with a history of depression, anxiety or postpartum depression may experience a return of

these types of issues or noted mood swings as hormonal changes occur. “It’s imperative to take note if you start experiencing any of the symptoms of depression/anxiety,” explains Dianna, “and that you communicate them to your provider who can help you address what you are experiencing. The sooner we know about a problem, the sooner we can help you improve how you are feeling.” STRESS With busy schedules, managing a career and a home life, it is harder than ever to maintain essential healthy habits. Regular exercise, healthy food and relaxation time help to alleviate stress, but if you are struggling to do those things, stress can build and manifest itself in an inability to have a restful night’s sleep. Plus as stress snowballs, you might increase your dependence on alcohol or caffeine. This reliance on either of these can also result in poor sleep. Stress cannot always be changed but there are mechanisms available to help handle the stress in our lives. UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS Many health conditions can also affect the quality of your sleep including obesity, diabetes, addictions and thyroid disorders as well as obstructive sleep apnea and others. Work with your provider can help you attain improvement in your overall health. FIND RELIEF To help get your sleep schedule back on track, there are a number of things you can try, but the first is to talk to your provider. “We have to first determine if sleep loss is really the issue,” says Dianne. “While many experts strongly recommend an average of seven to eight hours, many adults do not achieve enough sleep due to their busy schedules.” Together, you and your provider can determine a likely cause and start discussing a solution that will work for you. n

A RAY OF HOPE Shedding Light into the Darkness

By Natalie Slieter | Photos by Reistroffer Design

B

ecky Rasmussen is a passionate, social justice warrior. Through the organization Call to Freedom, she fights for those stuck in human trafficking here in Sioux Falls and throughout South Dakota. The mission of the organization is to help navigate a healthy path for victims of human trafficking and sex exploitation. She helps these women transition out slavery into to a life of their own. With the path she has chosen, one might think Becky would be burnt out, tired, and overwhelmed by the weight of her job. But Becky exudes joy and peace, and wants to share the hope she has found with others. She offers a big smile and is welcoming to strangers. And when she talks about her job, which she views as her calling, the passion she has seeps into others giving them an understanding why she does what she does day after day. “If anywhere along the way you become hard or you become bitter, you will not be successful in transitioning these women into a life of productivity, sufficiency and real healing and restoration,” Becky says. Becky grew up on a farm between Pierre and Winner, SD. She attended a country school until she was eight years old and then moved to the big city of Sioux Falls, which was a social shock. Becky says she didn’t come from the best family and found it to be a bit broken growing up. She attended the University of South Dakota to earn a marketing degree, graduating in 1993. After graduating, she had several jobs in several towns. She worked in sales at Gateway, but realized phone sales weren’t for her. She then worked at various news stations in Sioux City and Kansas City. During this time she also got married and had her daughter, Riley, who is now 15. Despite her success in the media world, Becky says she never felt like that was what she was supposed to be doing. She says the last 11 years of her life were the years when everything changed.

“Every piece of that had a purpose and developed me for what I’m doing today,” Becky says. Twelve years ago, Becky returned to Iowa and went through a divorce. She became very broken and realized there was a lot within her that needed fixing in order for her to move on with her life. She ended up finding her faith and beginning a relationship with Jesus. “My whole world changed,” Becky says with a smile. She came home to Sioux Falls and within a few months found a job opportunity to work at the non-profit organization Volunteers of America. She quickly moved up the ranks at work and was finding great success there, prepping for leadership within the organization. But then, Becky had a lunch date with Susan Omansen, the founder of the first anti-human trafficking organization in South Dakota. Becky learned how human trafficking is a major problem here in South Dakota and this changed everything for her. What Susan told her resonated and she felt a need to do something about it. Shortly after that meeting, she left VOA to work in ministry at a local church, wanting to help others. A few years later she started researching human trafficking in South Dakota, which brought her to a fundraising meeting for Tapestry International, a movement that leads community outreach for those lost and hurting in South Dakota and beyond. At this meeting, she learned about their Call to Freedom program and started getting involved. She attended the Sturgis Bike Rally in 2015 to do outreach for those who seemed to be in potentially vulnerable situations. She was drawn to approach

a young lady named Marissa, who was 17 years old at the time. They started talking and connecting and towards the end of the conversation, Marissa began crying.

somehow balancing both jobs. But as her passion grew for the non-profit, she realized it was time to fully invest herself into Call to Freedom and the mission she felt led to do.

“She kept saying to me, ‘You have no idea what kind of day I’ve had, you have no idea what kind of day I’ve had,’” Becky says. “And then she was gone.”

The skills she learned over the last 11 years at VOA and in ministry proved to be essential as Becky started to build up Call to Freedom.

Becky learned the next day from an international search and rescue group that Marissa was suspected of being human trafficked and missing out of the Sturgis area. Marissa was in a situation where she was pulled into sex trafficking a few years ago, got out of it for a while, but unfortunately, was pulled back in. The group Becky met with said it’s common for victims like Marissa to be pulled back in due to gaps in services and resources. If these women are unable to find assistance, they remain vulnerable and an easy target for human traffickers. “I didn’t know what to do with that,” Becky says. Shortly after that encounter, she met with the executive director for Tapestry International. At that meeting, the executive director encouraged Becky to take over the Call to Freedom program. Becky took time to think and pray and accepted the opportunity. She applied for Call to Freedom to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit in November 2015. By January 2016, their request was granted and they could start receiving community support to help trafficking victims in the area. Becky says Sioux Falls has been nothing but welcoming and supportive of the organization and helping these women start their lives. Offering resources and assistance is essential to make sure victims can learn to lead a normal life and not be pulled back in to human trafficking.

Becky and her daughter

Becky officially became the Executive Director of Call to Freedom in February of this year. While starting up Call to Freedom, she was also working at a news station

“When I was at Volunteers of America, I learned how to fundraise, and how to cultivate donors. I also learned how to run programs, and really understand how a non-profit worked,” Becky says. “And the ministry side, you have to understand forgiveness and mercy. You have to understand that even traffickers are broken and that even those purchasing women are broken.” Call to Freedom focuses on outreach and housing when it comes to helping victims of human trafficking. First, they need to be brought out of that slavery and go through counseling, addiction services if needed, occupational therapy, mental and medical services and learn life skills, like how to get a job and create a budget. Then they move to a transitional housing unit called Marissa’s House and learn to transition out of the life they were once in. It’s all about healing and getting out of the survival mode they’re accustomed to. As Becky talks about Call to Freedom and the women she helps, her passion is evident. She doesn’t talk too much about herself because she feels the work she is doing is more important. Becky says she really connects with the women she helps because she understands what it is like to not have family support. “Sometimes it’s interesting how you journey in life and how you really end up using that to help others because you can really relate to them in a lot of ways,” Becky says. n

GREENHOUSE SISTERS A Growing Business Rooted in Family

M

aking their customers happy and providing them with quality products.” That’s what owner Hayley Zeigler likes best about being in the greenhouse business with her sister Heidi Teal. Heidi and Hayley are the owners of Cliff Avenue Greenhouse, a family business. Continuing the legacy of growing wasn’t always the aspiration of these greenhouse sisters, but the values of hard work and fiscal responsibility were deeply rooted in the heart of the business their father started and they grew to love. Their father began by growing and selling tomato plants out of his garage while working his regular full time job at John Morell. Then in 1972 he had the opportunity to buy the Cliff Avenue Greenhouse at a prosperous time in the green house industry.

By Chellee Nemec Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography

House plants were just starting to take off and the greenhouse industry was booming. Their father capitalized on this success all while keeping it a family business, hiring many of Heidi and Hayley’s aunts and uncles. Heidi began working for the family business in the second grade and her older sister Hayley started in the third grade, both working until going off to college. Heidi studied at SDSU and USD taking some horticulture studies and came back to the greenhouse to work alongside her parents while Hayley went to USF earning a degree in education. She spent three years teaching at St. Mary’s. It was when her father opened his second location that Hayley left her teaching positon to join her sister and parents in the greenhouse family business.

Their commitment to family carries over to their customers. Heidi and Hayley truly value their customers and strive to always provide the best products. They will even pull products from their benches if it doesn’t meet their standards. Heidi and Hayley take pride in the honest company they have built and find it rewarding to go to work each day to make their customers happy with the quality products they provide. n

Both sisters have families of their own, Heidi with three children and Hayley with two. They continued the tradition of being a family business by bringing in their own families to work at the greenhouses. Hayley’s husband works with Heidi at the 26th street location as a manager and a valuable part of their team. Heidi’s middle son works for the greenhouse full time, her daughter works in the summer, and Hayley’s daughter works for them in the summer at the 41st street location. They are one big happy family and they like it that way.

The value of hard work planted in them by their parents is what Hayley and Heidi attribute their success to and their ability to keep their business growing. Heidi and Hayley are more than sisters, and coowners of a business, they are best friends who work together and play together sharing vacations and holidays with each other’s families. Heidi says about their relationship, “We really balance each other out. When one needs help or is having a bad day the other one steps in to help or provide support needed to work through the issues.” Hayley agrees, “We are pretty tight and we communicate with each other really well.” They make all of the decision of their business together yet they divide the duties between them. Heidi is works on the financial and payroll side of their business while Hayley works with advertising and inventory.

THE GOODNIGHT THEATRE COLLECTIVE Bringing More Good Nights to Sioux Falls By Jill Funke | Photos courtesy of The Goodnight Theatre Collective

T

he Good Night Theatre Collective is a group driven by a passion to increase opportunities for women’s representation in theatre, both on stage and in leadership positions. Four Sioux Falls Performers founded Good Night, and three are women. Executive Director Sydney Place, Company Manager Martha Stai, and Marketing Director Ruth Sturm were excited for the opportunity to join the theatre scene in Sioux Falls, as females currently lead many of the other theatre companies. In March, Good Night presented The Screen Queen Cabaret, which is a show comprised of songs from television and movies. According to Good Night Marketing Director Ruth Sturm, “This show was directed by women, and the cast was made up entirely of women. It was definitely a celebration of lady power.” The next month, the company tackled BALL: A Musical Tribute to My Lost Testicle. Based on the real-life story of one man’s struggle with testicular cancer, the comedy used stories and songs about chemo, community and courage to demonstrate laughing and singing in the face of darkness. The Throwback Thursday Cabaret was presented in May, and took the audience back to their favorite memories through songs of previous decades. The Screen Queen Cabaret and Throwback Thursday Cabaret are part of an ongoing schedule of cabaret performances that the Good Night Theatre Collective presents every third Thursday of the month at the ICON Lounge in Downtown Sioux Falls. These shows are a fun treat, as Sturm confesses, “Our performances are a mix between a concert and full production, with songs that follow a theme and focus on singers who can perform, entertain and delight.” In June, Good Night will be presenting Broadway Legends: A Mega Cabaret from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15. This will be the final cabaret of the season, and Good Night company members plan to celebrate a year of beautiful songs, hilarious hijinks, and spectacular moments. Sturm

is excited for the show, as she explains, “This cabaret will be featuring the true legends of musical theatre, those songs that make your heart soar and your feet tap along.” In addition to hearing beloved familiar songs, the audience will also see their favorite performers as Good Night is inviting back the guest artists from their first seven cabarets to join new performers for a truly amazing event. Well into their goal of contributing exciting shows to the growing Sioux Falls theatre scene, Good Night focuses on professional-level productions that entertain, challenge, and engage the greater arts community. Realizing the importance of theatre in communities, Sturm comments, “We are so excited about working in an artistic community that is led by women, especially when so much of the nation falters in this area.” The members of Good Night search for just the right productions because they believe in productions that challenge their actors to grow. They also believe in shows that give the audience what they want to see, and experience something else they never expected. Perhaps most importantly, Sturm says, “We believe in Good Nights.” n Martha Stai, Larissa Buchholz, Julie Sauer, Kristy Kayser and Ruth Sturm

SIOUX FALLS FORD LINCOLN A Cornerstone of the Sioux Falls Community By Jill Funke | Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography

E

d Bloom and Mike Chaplin are husbands, fathers and dedicated community members in the city of Sioux Falls. Both men grew up in Minnesota, and entered the Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln and Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls dealerships to work with their father-in-law and the dealerships’ owner Randy Nehring. The general manager of Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln, Ed and his wife Heidi are grateful to be raising their two sons in Sioux Falls, as he says, “People in the Sioux Falls community do a great job supporting local businesses. When I lived in a larger setting, it was rare to make retail decisions based on company ownership. Now that I live in Sioux Falls, I go out of my way to shop locally. I think that many people in our community feel the same way.” Mike is the general manager at Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls, and is happy to be raising his two daughters with his wife Gretchen in the Sioux Falls community. He explains, “I believe

that operating a dealership allows us a special opportunity to interact with our customers and get to know them on a first name basis. My family has set down roots in Sioux Falls and we intend to be an integral part of the growth of this community because we are in turn able to give back in so many different ways.” Working in Sioux Falls automotive dealerships has taught Ed and Mike a great deal, and each man feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to have Randy as a mentor. According to Mike, “Randy has taught me so much. He is a wealth of knowledge and he has been completely honest in sharing his experiences regarding the ups and downs in this business.” Ed is also appreciative of Randy, saying, “Randy has done an excellent job of communicating our business strategy as our industry continually changes.” The brothers-in-law value the path that their dealerships have taken, and maintain that

strategic planning is something Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln and Luxury Auto Mall have done well. Instrumental in carrying out the strategic plans are the dealership employees and Ed says that they work hard to attract candidates with high character. “We recruit high character people and invest in training for them to become highly competent employees.” Mike adds, “We put a great deal of emphasis on education and individual development.” This process has been successful, as Ed says, “We are extremely fortunate to be surrounded by very talented employees.” According to Mike, this investment in their staff helps the employees make providing a world-class customer experience their top priority, explaining, “We live and operate as a ‘Main Street’ business, not a ‘Wall Street’ business.” Changes in the industry were the catalyst for their new store at 4901 W. 26th Street. The new dealership is one of the very first in the nation to utilize the most recent Ford and Lincoln design. Mike is excited about the style of the new store, “It was designed with the customer in mind. We make buying and servicing a vehicle very easy and the new store allows us to add a wonderful customer experience.” The entire new and used inventory is displayed on one lot with extra wide aisles for customers driving through the rows of automobiles in search of their next vehicle. In the quick lane, the new store boasts a doubled capacity in which they perform regular vehicle maintenance. From the outside, visitors can see that the look of the dealership is brighter, as Ed explains, “I think customers will enjoy the open, clean look of the new dealership which is supplemented by bright LED lighting and large windows.“ As Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln continues to anticipate and maneuver changes in the automotive industry, both general managers feel that their dealership is in a great position to respond to the purchasing and repair needs of the greater Sioux Falls community. They realize that their new store will be integral to them in helping meet the needs of their customers. Mike sees the new store as another step to the continual new frontier of vehicle sales, “This is a monumental moment for the Sioux Falls market and our family. It’s really something we all should be very proud of.” n

our years ago, Dan Grossman started his first service company. As customers started asking him for referrals for additional services, he decided to expand his own business to meet that need. The first service he added was painting, reaching out to Zach Warne who had a decade of experience and shared his vision for a multi-line service company. Through that relationship PIVOT Companies was born. After adding painting to his business’s list of services, they have continued to grow. He says, “If we can earn your trust [through] the product we deliver, why wouldn’t you call us for [other services]?” Pivot aims to be a one-stop-shop for home and business services. They provide four specific sets of services right now, and they are looking to add an additional 3-6 areas of focus within the next few years. Painting and millwork: Pivot can do painting and millwork in any setting – interior, exterior, commercial, or residential. Whether it’s big or small, PIVOT will take on your project. PIVOT most recently finished a luxury living development at Lake Lorraine. Surface restoration: Dan’s team can power wash almost anything—sidewalks, windows, patios, decks, roofs, fences, and more. Soft Wash is a relatively new technology to the Sioux Falls area, allowing them to do roofs, rust marks, mold work, and more—leaving these surfaces looking brand new and making them last longer.

By Stacey Kracht Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography

Epoxy and decorative overlays: Dan describes this aspect of PIVOT as the ability to extend the livable space of your house. For example, epoxy flooring can make a garage a comfortable place to grill with the guys. His team can turn existing concrete slabs into a beautiful stone walkway or use an acid stain to give concrete almost any appearance you could want. They can create a reflector floor, a unique option that will last as long as anyone would live in any house with minimum upkeep needed. Water restoration: Because Dan’s original business was centered around water restoration, he has “tried and true” ways to get things done. However, he also understands that new technologies can be the most efficient and cost-effective for customers, so he is willing to invest the money so that PIVOT can pass some savings down to customers. The most important part of the business is true customer service. “If you call us and you’re not extremely pleased with the product and the service delivered…you’re not going to work with a more receptive company [than Pivot] to fix or address the issue,” Dan says. “People’s hard-earned money is well-spent with us,” he adds, as is evidenced by customers referring their friends and family. He also points out that his team has decades of combined experience in any of these given industries they service. His team strives to deliver a truly friendly customer experience. n

or Dr. Chris Wermerson, DMD, MS, traveling the world and serving his country as a Navy dentist on the USS Rushmore was the beginning of his career in helping others. A Brandon, SD native, he is thrilled to finally be home in order to now serve his community. Following his service in the Navy, Dr. Wermerson completed an additional two years of specialty training in Orthodontics and Dento-Facial Orthopedics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. “It was always in the back of my mind that I would end up back in Sioux Falls, and it’s really been exciting to move home to open Wermerson Orthodontics. It’s been a fun journey and all the time in school, residency, and the Navy has really been a blessing.” Providing innovative technology for his patients is extremely important to Dr. Wermerson and he didn’t cut any corners. “Our office is equipped with digital x-rays and the latest in computer technology. We are paperless, which makes for faster and safer storage of patients information. We offer orthodontic treatment options from traditional, time-proven fixed appliances such as metal braces to clear braces and Invisalign clear aligners.” Truly passionate about his profession, Dr. Wermerson is well aware that perfect smiles often lead to increased self-esteem. “I love creating beautiful smiles and seeing the change in people’s self confidence as they start smiling more and more with each visit. Smiles are contagious and it makes for a really fun work environment when

patients are coming back noticing the changes with their teeth, feeling good about the changes, and smiling more because they feel better about their smile. It’s really remarkable.” Although it may seem early, Dr. Wermerson suggests bringing children in for an initial orthodontic check up at the age of seven. “We like to see kids for a complimentary exam to make sure their permanent teeth are erupting properly and that their permanent teeth have space in their upper and lower jaws to erupt into. If everything looks good after this first check we continue to see them for yearly complimentary exams to watch their growth and development. If at anytime we need to step in to make sure things erupt in the right way and sequence, we discuss options at that time.”

Dr. Chris Wermerson, DMD, MS

Dr. Wermerson shares, “We genuinely care about each person that walks through our doors and will spend the time to explain what is going on and what their options are to improve their smile. We provide everyone with a customized treatment plan based on their exam and make sure by the time they leave they understand what their options are.” Wermerson Orthodontics submits for orthodontic insurance benefits with all insurance providers.
