2019 Reclaiming Youth Seminars professors to teach on strengthening youth By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of Reclaiming Youth at Risk

A

ugustana University will be hosting the 2019 Reclaiming Youth Seminars on July 18-20 on their campus in Sioux Falls, with a Reclaiming Youth at Risk Certification Course commencing on July 16-17. The seminars have been in the Black Hills for the past 25 years but are relocating to Sioux Falls for the foreseeable future.

The seminars were born from the book Reclaiming Youth at Risk, written in 1990 by three Augustana University professors: Martin Brokenleg, professor emeritus of Native American studies; Larry Brendtro, professor emeritus in special education; and Steve Van Bockern, professor of education. The book has a second edition published in 2002, with a third edition coming this July. Brokenleg, Brendtro and Van Bockern came together 30 years ago to compile their knowledge on Native American philosophies and share with others, so they could create environments that raise respectful, responsible children. “They are looking for positive, strength-based ways of working with young people. So much of what we’re promoting is a relational way of serving young people rather than punitive punishment,” Van Bockern explained. “It’s a different way of being with kids.” Brokenleg, Brendtro, and Van Bockern are hosts for the seminars this year, along with Mark Freado. The model the men describe in their book and will discuss at the seminars is the Circle of Courage medicine wheel. Four values make up this model: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. They believe youth thrive when they have those in place. “If kids are getting into trouble, one of those areas is broken,” Van Bockern shared.

20

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2019

Every year, the event attracts teachers, counselors, and others working with youth from around the world. This year they will hear keynote speakers and presenters covering the topics of trauma, resilience, and thriving; social and emotional learning in classrooms and schools; strengthbased treatment with children and families; positive climates in residential care and juvenile justice; and Native American and First Nations youth and communities. “These are people on the frontline building hope and resilience in young people,” Brendtro said. Something that surprised Brendtro and Van Bockern is the international impact their book has had in the last 30 years. People from Australia to Germany to South Africa have found the information empowering and have requested training on the material from the authors. Brendtro and Van Bockern are elated that Augustana University wants to host the seminar and hope Sioux Falls will be more accessible to attendees and continue to bring in a vast array of people from around the world. “We provide a place where people can come and get inspired and share their ideas,” Brendtro said. Downtown Riverfest event celebrates at riverfront greenway By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of Downtown Sioux Falls

I

f you’re hoping to end the summer on a high note, look no further than the 7th Annual Downtown Riverfest. It will be held on Saturday, August 17, from 4 to 11 p.m. along the Riverfront Greenway.

Brienne Maner is vice president for Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. and has seen a steady increase in attendance and vendor interest for the event over the years. “Riverfest is important to the Sioux Falls community because it shines a spotlight on one of the most unique public amenities in the area — the Downtown River Greenway. The event also raises awareness of water quality issues and the importance of the Big Sioux River,” Maner shared. New to the event this year is the Arc of Dreams, a beautiful sculpture that stretches across the Riverfront Greenway between 6th and 8th Streets, which will be lit for the event. A beer garden will also be featured, offering local craft beers and more in the Cherapa Prairie area, east of the main stage. A variety of entertainment options will be available to enjoy at the event. Attendees can check out local and regional live entertainment acts, including Good Morning Bedlam, an indie folk band from Minneapolis, and Satchel Grande, a nine-piece band from Omaha that mixes funk, soul and pop into their music. There will also be canoe rides, interactive art opportunities, retail vendors, a variety of food vendors, fireworks, and of course, spectacular views from the Riverfront Greenway. Families can head to the Midco Kids Tent in the Raven parking lot for their own entertainment and activities. Bingo will be available for the adults in this location later in the evening. Maner says Riverfest brings a large amount of people to the downtown area, which means increased economic activity for a thriving community. “It’s been a tremendous success on many different levels, and we will continue to grow and refine the event as long as the people keep coming to enjoy it!” Maner said. n

Under the SD Influence gathering of social media influencers makes an impact on local businesses By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Christin Vander Pol

E

very day thousands of women are searching for answers for the issues they face in their daily lives. Whether it’s minute (what is the best dry shampoo to extend my style for days) to large (how can I tell if I have postpartum depression) women are looking online to connect with other women in search of answers to questions like these. Studies conducted by retailtouchpoints.com conclude that 86% of women consult social media before making a purchase. Who do they typically find? Other women who have the same features like skin tone, body shape age or taste. While there are many influential women online nationally, there is a growing population of influencers right here in our backyard. Coordinated by Sarah Tveidt, lifestyle blogger at DakotaChic.com, 15 South Dakota social media influencers came together for a meet-up event at R Wine Bar to network, share ideas, and learn from one another. Together, this group of bloggers and influencers have a total of 100,000+ combined Instagram followers. Through this event, it was Sarah’s vision to create a community where South Dakota bloggers and social media influencers can build connections. Sarah shared, “Blogging has had a slower start in SD, but it has grown over time. Each of these ladies are authentic in the content they cover, and they genuinely want to make an impact and help other women.”

Women in Aviation helping ladies earn their wings By Jill Funke | Photos courtesy of Women in Aviation International

F

lying the friendly skies is both a hobby and a career for many men and women. Women in Aviation International (WAI) is a nonprofit organization that serves to encourage and advance women in all aviation career fields and interests. WAI provides year-round resources to assist their diverse membership in their consideration of aviation as a career. The Great Planes chapter of WAI is comprised of about 50 active and supporting members from Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. According to chapter President Randi Pederson, “We have women and men from all types of aviation backgrounds in our group - corporate pilots, military pilots, cargo pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, aircraft owners, business owners, and student pilots.” Pederson feels that their small group is a great place for members, as she says, “The Great Planes Chapter is balancing educational activities with social activities. We have so much in common right away and know all the good places to meet for lunch or coffee.” Realizing the importance of their role in the community, Pederson explains some of the chapter’s outreach efforts. “We love to promote aviation to young girls by attending the Women in Science event every March, and helping the Girls Scouts earn their aviation badge in the fall; but we also love connecting and networking through social events like our Holiday Lights Trolley Tour.” She adds, “Having our

families involved is important as well, so we include spouses, children and friends in all of our social events.” Because Pederson feels that the largest benefit for Women in Aviation Great Planes Chapter is having a platform to connect and promote the aviation industry to women and young girls, the Great Planes Chapter’s next goal is to host a Girls in Aviation Day where girls ages 8-17 attend a one day program at the Sioux Falls Airport. Anyone who would like to help sponsor or volunteer for this event is encouraged to contact the organization, as well as connect with them on Facebook and Instagram. In addition, the Women in Aviation Great Planes Chapter will be at the Sioux Falls Airshow August 17-18th, 2019. The public is welcome to meet members at the Cirrus Aircraft booth. Considering the current worldwide pilot shortage, and the projections that the industry will be short almost 800,000 pilots in the next 20 years, Pederson envisions an incredible opportunity. “Now is the best time to be in the aviation industry!” She continues, “I believe that women make great pilots as we are calm under pressure and pay close attention to details. With those traits, as well as some emotional encouragement through our Great Planes Chapter, it would be very attainable to pursue a career in aviation. The possibilities are limitless in this field!” n

Membership in WAI is easy. Visit WAI.org and click JOIN WAI for an online application. Questions? Please contact randi_pederson@yahoo.com

Classic Summer Dates think beyond the bar for some outdoorsy romance By Chellee Unruh

S

ummer time has finally arrived, which means the days are longer and summer Fridays are the perfect time to unwind and have some fun. They are also a great day for planning a unique and fun date for your significant other. What better way to heat up your relationship than soaking up the summer rays with an outdoorsy date. Spending time in the sun will boost your body’s production of hormones which in turn improves your mood giving you that feel-good feeling we all crave. Better moods lead to better dates, to better relationships and so on. In short, everyone wins.

to a drive-in would be to go downtown Sioux Falls for their Friday movies in the park, or hang up a white sheet in your backyard and create your own intimate movie experience.

To help go beyond the obvious of enjoying a cold beverage on the patio of your favorite watering hole, here is a list of five outdoorsy dates that you could plan for your next date.

Go on a hike or nature walk. With the miles of trails winding through the city as well as the amazing parks like Good Earth State Park close by, you can take in nature while you take in the enjoyment of each other’s company.

Rent a convertible for the day. Nothing says summer like the top down and the South Dakota breeze blowing through your hair. Take a cruise in beautiful downtown Sioux Falls or hit the countryside and stop in a little town you have never been to before. Go to a drive-in movie. While you have that convertible rented, you may want to drive it over to Luverne, Minnesota and see a move at the drive-in theatre. An alternative to going

Go the county fair. Whether it is the Sioux Empire Fair or one of the smaller country fairs nearby, fairs are a summertime staple. They offer a variety of entertainment like seeing a concert, checking out animals, riding rides, playing games and enjoying yummy foods. Fairs are a great double date if you want to make it a group outing.

Go fishing. Another quintessential summer pastime that can be a fun date. Bonus if you are handy enough to grill up your catch after your fishing escapade. So, when summer Fridays come around again hit the outdoors and soak up every moment of sunshine and your significant other. Your health and relationship will be better for it. n

PRESENTATION SISTERS Sharing the Joy of Education By Natalie Slieter

“The Presentation Sisters have long been committed to serving in rural missions, through education. Many callings have been answered by the Sisters and many students have been impacted by them. For myself, it is the mission of educating nurses, of which I am proud to be an alum of Presentation College. My education has helped me deliver a broad spectrum of health care in South Dakota.” – Esther M Preszler, CNP and Board of Trustees for Presentation College

advertorial

N

ano Nagle set the stage for the value of education amongst the Presentation Sisters back in the 1700s. That led six sisters and novices to leave Ireland and travel to America in the 1800s to establish themselves in Dakota Territory and begin the work they continue to this day. Today, this includes sponsoring Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, offering Catholic School Scholarships and serving as mentors through various educational opportunities, including an internship program. Sister Suzanne Cotter understands the importance of education. She was an educator throughout South Dakota, with the majority of her time spent teaching English and Latin at O’Gorman High School in Sioux Falls. She retired in 2005 after 45 years of educating the Catholic youth in the state. If it weren’t for her receiving an education from sisters, Sister Suzanne says she may not have considered becoming neither a teacher nor a sister. Despite coming from a family of teachers, she had plans to become a nurse, but was too young to enter the field after high school.

Instead, she attended junior college at Notre Dame in Mitchell, South Dakota. Her interest in becoming a teacher was sparked, thanks to the influence of the sisters at the college who were teaching her. “I wanted to be what they were,” shared Sister Suzanne. To her they were friendly, passionate about their vocation, and overall, joyful people. Sister Suzanne hoped to emulate the qualities she saw in the sisters to her students, as well as help them develop leadership skills and life skills to take with them once they left her classroom. During her years of teaching, she was also able to take students to Mexico on various mission trips, which opened up their eyes to the world. “I hope they saw that I valued education and that I enjoyed it,” said Sister Suzanne. Like Sister Suzanne, the Presentation Sisters continue to connect educational experiences with other cultures. One way they do this is collaborating with other organizations through Prayer Bus Tours and Prayer Vigils in Sioux Falls. These events give people the opportunity to

pray together in different ways and visit locations where they can encounter and learn from people of different cultures and religions. We can follow the lead of the Presentation Sisters by being lifelong learners and always choosing to learn from one another. Our education doesn’t need to end once we leave school. We can continue to grow and learn to understand each other, especially those from cultures unlike our own. In the past, some Prayer Bus Tours have included visits to our Buddhist, Hindu, Latino, Muslim, American Indian and Somalian neighbors. To check out the next Prayer Bus Tour or Vigil, please visit the events page at presentationsisters.org or email marketing@ presentationsisters.org.

Sister Suzanne Cotter is passionate about education. She shared her smile and zest for life with students and staff in South Dakota Catholic Schools for nearly 45 years. She enjoys making learning fun and encouraging others to be life-long learners, in and out of the classroom. Makeup for the aged eye Lets face it, you want makeup that takes some years off. A winged eyeliner, will open up your eyes, and make an illusion of a small eye lift. Instead of using a black eyeliner on the bottom water line, opt for a brown shadow instead. This will soften up your eyes and not make them look dark, hollow, and sunk in. Avoid eyeshadows that are blue, purple or sparkly. The blue and the purple colors make your eyes looked bruised and bring out the dark circles underneath your eye. Eye shadows with sparkles will draw attention to the fine lines on the lids. If you really like using a shimmer, only apply it to the inner corners of your eyes. Reducing and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles Powder will most likely stick in the fine lines, and because it soaks up oil, it will leave your face looking dry. Try choosing a foundation that is right for the type of skin you have and avoid powder. Make blush your friend Blush will be your go-to for a finished face. Adding blush puts warmth back into your skin, making you feel alive and youthful. Brows are the frame of your face As you age, eyebrows get sparse. Filling in your eyebrows keeps their shape and definition. Conceal dark circles When picking your concealer chose a colors two shades lighter than your face foundation. Remember to never over conceal. It will cause makeup to sit in fine lines and bring out your wrinkles. n June/July 2019 | SiouxFallsWoman.net

which option is right for you? By Jill Funke

T

he question of buying or leasing is asked by many in the market for a new vehicle. A vehicle lease is comparable to renting an automobile and returning it to the owner at the end of the agreement, while buying a vehicle transfers the ownership to the purchaser. There are benefits and drawbacks to each option. In a vehicle lease, monthly payments, sales tax and down payment amounts are lower. When the lease period is up, the vehicle is returned to the dealership and the lessee can begin another lease on a new vehicle. According to Sioux Falls Ford new vehicle manager Kevin Rost, “The length of most leases is similar to the length of the warranty, which means little to no out of pocket repair expense.” A lease can also keep a driver from a negative equity position where they owe the bank more than the vehicle is worth and they are responsible for paying off that difference. Rost explains, “Once the lease contract is completed, a customer is not liable for the value of the vehicle.” Those interested in leasing a vehicle should consider that the miles they are allowed to put on the vehicle are limited. They will end up paying more for the use of the leased vehicle than they would if they purchased and kept the vehicle for several years, and

they do not accumulate the equity that accompanies a vehicle purchase. Purchasing a vehicle will be less expensive over several years, and trade in value of the owned vehicle can be applied against the purchase of the next vehicle. Also, Rost says, “With no modification restrictions, excess mileage fees and having the ability to sell the car whenever the buyer wants, there is more flexibility in buying a vehicle.” Those seriously contemplating the purchase of a vehicle should realize that a larger down payment may be required to help them avoid a negative equity position, and vehicle payments will be higher than those in a lease contract. In addition, after the warranty ends, the costs of repairs are the responsibility of the owner. For those who are in the market for a new vehicle, Rost advises them to examine their lifestyles and financial situations, as well as their vehicle needs and expectations to decide between a purchase or lease. In some cases where the driver needs a nicer vehicle for their business, Rost says, “A lease can enable a customer to drive a larger or more expensive vehicle for a smaller monthly payment, which may even be less than half the amount that a buyer would make.” n

Kitchen Gadgets for the Summer Chef: three products to put a new twist on summer staples By Brianna Venekamp | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

O

ne of the best parts of summertime is the amazing abundance of healthy, fresh foods everywhere you look. Let these products help add a new twist to your favorite recipes this summer for all your outdoor cooking and camping activities.

Spiral Instead of Slice While pasta is a favorite meal in the winter time, not everyone wants to eat as heavy in the summer. A spiralizer quickly transforms vegetables like squash and zucchini into thin noodle shapes that replicate the texture of pasta, while allowing you to lessen the calories and gluten in your diet. It’s also easy to shy away from serving vegetables because of the prep work and cutting. “The OXO Spiralizer takes a lot of the manual labor out of prepping vegetables, as it adheres to the countertop, making it much easier and safer to use than a hand held tool,” explains Matthew Skadsen with Plum’s Cooking. The three stainless-steel blades

on the OXO Spiralizer let you choose from spaghetti, fettuccine or ribbon cut spirals, allowing you to create pastas, curly fries, salads and garnishes in mere seconds. It is also dishwasher safe for easy clean up. Shake Up Your Sauce When it comes to preparing your favorite dishes, cooking oil is often the secret “sauce” in a recipe. Why not experiment this summer with using herb, spice, or fruit infused cooking oils? Olivevelle’s innovative canister dispensing system protects the delicate high-quality oils and vinegars from the damaging effects of oxygen, light, and heat, guaranteeing customers receive the freshest product on the market. Compared to pre-bottled options, the tasting system allows customers to sample the different oils and vinegars before filling bottles on demand. “Customers initially purchase any size bottle at Plum’s Cooking for a $3.00 fee and fill it with the oil or vinegar of their choosing,” explains Skadsen. “When they bring back the empty bottle, we switch bottles with the same or a new flavor at no additional cost.” Big Game Cutting Board Perfect for hunting, camping, and backyard entertaining, the Epicurean Big Game Tailgating Cutting Board is a fun and practical accessory for your kitchen or backyard. “The material is non-porous, which means you don’t have to worry about juices seeping into the wood and staying there. This creates a product that is safe to use with raw or cooked meats,” explains Skadsen. It fits easily and securely onto the back of a truck’s tailgate or other large flat surface, such as a picnic table, creating an instant carving space for large portions of grilled or smoked meats. The durable construction of these boards allows you to cut and chop with gusto, while a built-in handle assists with carrying, and a juice groove ensures easier clean up. Summer is all about unwinding, relaxing, and enjoying the simple pleasures of good food and good company. Having these products handy, means you’ll be able to add a healthy twist to meals as well as entertain indoors and out all summer long. n

Home Mortgage Options save thousands by knowing before you buy By Margaret Pennock

T

he thought of purchasing a home is exciting but the reality of financing it can be complex and frustrating. Fortunately there are multiple options that you may qualify for that can help you purchase your dream home. All loans require credit and background checks but the requirements do vary considerably by type. Here are some of the most common loan types available. Conventional Loans Conventional loans are not ‘guaranteed’ loans by a government agency and are financed by traditional lenders such as banks or credit unions. These loans typically require a 20% down payment on the purchase price of the home. FHA Loans The Federal Housing Authority or FHA typically offers lower down payment requirements, sometimes as low as 3.5%, and are excellent for first-time home buyers. They typically have less stringent credit requirements and lower upfront loan costs.

56

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2019

VA Loans The VA Loan is exclusively for veterans or military service members. While it doesn’t require a down payment at all, it does require an up-front one-time “Funding Fee” at closing. This fee can range from .5% to 3% depending on the status of the veteran and if they have used a VA Loan previously. Understanding Fixed Versus Variable Interest Rates Interest rates play a large part in what kind of a house you can afford to buy based on your monthly payments, but also how much you spend on the overall purchase price. The differences can be dramatic! A fixed rate remains static over the life of your loan while a variable rate fluctuates. Typically a variable rate will start at a lower rate and then increase over a period of time. Common Mortgage Lengths The two most common mortgage terms, or length of loan, are 15 and 30 years. Typically, shorter terms equal a lower interest rate but this isn’t always the case. Your mortgage loan will reflect a higher monthly payment, which is money applied to the principal or actual money toward the purchase price excluding interest. With a shorter term you’ll ultimately end up paying much less in financing fees. Incredibly, over the lifetime of a loan, a 30-year mortgage can end up costing more than double the 15-year option and potentially even more. Set Yourself Up for Success In a hot housing market like Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas, it’s important that you are prepared financially to make a strong offer once you’re ready to buy. The best way to do this is to work with a lender to become pre-qualified for a mortgage. You can do this by making an appointment with a mortgage lender where you can identify the best type of mortgage for you and determine what your budget is based on your finances and what you can expect to pay. And most importantly don’t forget to shop for your loan! Check interest rates and any other ‘specials’ that lending institutions may be offering such as reduced closing fees or other extras that can benefit you and your pocketbook. n

Investing Beyond a 401(k) and the Stock Market By Lisa Peterson

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2019

A

workplace 401(k) plan is usually the best way to begin saving for retirement, but if you don’t have a 401(k) plan or it’s not meeting all your investment needs, you may want to consider other ways to invest your savings. There are many ways to save money for retirement besides relying on a 401(k), said Rosanne Krier, Vice President/Trust Officer at American Bank & Trust in Sioux Falls. “If you’re self employed and don’t have a 401(k) available, there are Self Employment (SEP) IRAs, which are a type of traditional IRA for self-employed individuals or small business owners,” Krier said. Another option is to open a Roth or traditional IRA where you save pre-tax dollars, she said. “I work with a lot of Roth and traditional IRAs. We help folks manage in whatever investment direction they want to go based on their life situation.” There are also micro-investment apps like Acorns, which round up the amount of your purchases to the nearest dollar and automatically invests a small amount of your money daily, weekly or monthly. You can start investing with as little as $5 and you don’t have to go through an investment broker or financial advisor since it’s all managed from your smartphone. A Health Savings Account (HSA) is great for people who have

high-deductible health plans, said Krier. “If you qualify to save in an HSA account and you don’t use those funds, those can grow for you like another investment account.” The housing market paints a rosy picture lately, making investing in real estate an attractive option. You can buy a home and rent it out, flip a house, or rent your existing home. Or investing in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) is another option. Investing in a small business or startup, while risky, can pay off, too. In 2015, The Securities and Exchange Commission approved crowdfunding rules that allow startups or small businesses to seek investors through brokers or online crowdfunding platforms. Much like a 401(k) or IRA, a 529 education saving plan lets you invest in mutual funds or similar investments. “I’ve set those up for two of my grandchildren,” said Krier. Wherever you put your money, each type of investment comes with drawbacks, so it’s best to understand the potential risks before getting started with a new investment. It’s also important to have a plan for how you will invest, said Krier. “I think everybody needs an investment plan that’s tailored for them and to stick with it and remember that you’re investing for the long term.” n

THE SECRET WEAPON FOR EXPANSION The success story of how a salon leveraged the right banking partner

Inspired by the creative and trendy vibe of the downtown scene, Atoley Salon and Spa offers a variety of products and services that suit the diverse population that live, work and play in downtown Sioux Falls. Their welcoming atmosphere makes clients feel cared for when they walk in and confident when they walk out. As a result of their commitment to the customer experience, Atoley Salon and Spa has realized lucrative growth over the last several years. Much so, they are in the process of their second expansion. Liz Erickson, owner of Atoley Salon and Spa also attributes her success to her decision to partner with Dacotah Bank for both her business and personal finances. Dacotah Bank is one of the largest independent financial institutions of the Midwest and “they are large enough to take care of my needs but feel like a small town bank and that was important to me,” shares Liz. “They are able to make the lending decision at the local level which was another factor I took into consideration when I was looking for a bank with the knowledge and the services to help me grow my business. My business banker Trisha Viss really lived up to the Dacotah Bank motto ‘Here for You.’ My previous banker was there for me when I expanded my business the first time and after my previous banker retired earlier this year, Trisha was there for me when I came back to finance the next expansion.” Atoley Salon is currently occupying two storefronts with a third party shop separating their spaces. The newest expansion will allow them to grow from 4 to 10 salon chairs and connect their salon and spa spaces giving customers a more fullservice experience. “When I took my expansion plans to Trisha, she really listened to my needs and offered me a financial package that was a great fit.“

It’s the bank’s community involvement, ability to help local businesses grow and thrive, and mission to exceed customer expectations that led Trisha to join the team at Dacotah Bank after previously working for Dakota Business Finance and the South Eastern Development Foundation. Her experience and knowledge of small business financing options through those local economic development organizations made it a perfect fit for Liz to work with Trisha. “I appreciated the unique perspective that Trisha has based on her past experience and the financing options that she shared with us. I would recommend Trisha and Dacotah Bank to any other business that is looking to grow,” says Liz. Trisha Viss is conveniently located at the downtown office at 300 S Phillips Ave. and can be reached by email at trisha.viss@dacotahbank. com or set an appointment by calling 605-367-6429.

Something Old, Something New new rustic design meets family-friendly living By Jennifer Dumke | Photos by Margaret Pennock

W

hen Jessica and Greg Jansma decided to custom build their home, the first things they considered were accommodating their family and creating a space that reflected their style. With their four children ranging in age from 12 years to 7 months old, Jessica knew she needed a space that would accommodate their family needs. And with a background in interior design and photography she created a home that is more than a place to live. “I’ve worked really hard to get where I am today,” adds Jessica when describing the importance her home plays in her life. And for this hardworking mother of four, being able to pursue her passion for design and art is something Jessica considers a gift. So when it came to designing her personal home, Jessica had a specific design in mind. “We really wanted a home that was cozy. We could have built something larger, but I know my kids always want to be in the same place I’m in,” Jessica adds as she gently sways her youngest, Eisley, in her arms. With a penchant for bright, open spaces, Jessica utilized a variety of natural materials and products to create what she describes as the “new rustic” which she further defines as a modern take of rustic style, combining curated items, coziness and clean lines. “I really wanted to introduce this type of design to the Sioux Falls area.”

Are you planning to buy, or sell a home?

The great room features modern lighting with dual long-arm sconces and coordinating chandelier in an antiqued brass finish. Chunky, rustic beams above add depth and texture to the sleek white walls and ceiling. “We actually added the beams after the home was built,” adds Jessica. “I just felt like the space needed something.” A home that is a reflection of Jessica’s eye for design means it is likely more changes are sure to come. “My home will never be done because I’m always creating and designing spaces. I feel like homes evolve over time; adding in curated items and creating spaces that define you.” Large, oversized windows flood natural sunlight into the spacious great room. A display of crisp white, muted grey and black provide the perfect canvas for accent colors, something Jessica enjoys mixing up based on mood and time of year. “Design is always changing and evolving so we wanted our own home to include the things that mean the most to us.” Flowing into the kitchen, casual dining area and mudroom, an oversized white island is topped off with a solid white surface while wide plank white oak floors reinforce a rustic take-away. For a large family, a large mudroom that includes a laundry area is a must. But even this utilitarian space is finished off with easy-to-clean tile floors and bright, incandescent light fixtures. For the kitchen, special consideration was given to the tile – as seen in this herringbone backsplash. “We purposely made sure to extend the tile to the ceiling to draw the eyes upward,” adds Jessica. “The tile also provides warmth to the white cabinets while still keeping the space neutral.” A classic farmhouse sink, designer matte black pendant light fixtures and sourced antique rugs warm up the modern space meanwhile, accents of lime green give a welcoming and spring-like feel that lead into the dining space where a wood beaded chandelier catches the eye. “I’ve gone to great lengths to incorporate statement lighting into the various rooms,” she adds. “I feel that it blends with the neutral textures and tones creating a fresh, family-friendly space.” And whether dining or drawing, an oversized rustic wood table is a natural anchor that is softened by a handmade oriental rug. Patio doors encased in a contrasting black lead to the exterior where the family enjoys spending time outdoors.

Special attention to detail is important to this busy mother of four and she sometimes has a little help. “If you look around, you’ll see crayon marks on the wood table and it’s not uncommon to find a small toy hidden in the floral arrangements,” she laughs. “But it’s these little touches that mean the most. This home was designed to encourage the arts and its openness allows me to easily observe them playing.”

When it’s time for rest, the master suite is the perfect place with its soft tones and layers of neutral fabrics. A large glass encased chandelier illuminates this already bright and open space while darker toned accessories draw the eye. Comprised of two old doors and fence posts, husband Greg showed off his craftsman skills by hand making this one-of-a-kind headboard. Painted a darker grey hue, it blends in perfectly while adding a point of distinction.

More exquisite details are seen in the main floor full bathroom. Grey weathered shiplap paneling are applied on the wall while sleek porcelain tile take over and extend to the ceiling. A traditional black cabinet with white porcelain top is given added interest with a honeycomb tile backsplash and old fashioned brushed chrome wall mount faucet. Finishing off the detailing is a modern round mirror flanked by traditional sconces.

“These little details are very important to me,” adds Jessica when glancing around the master bath. A custom octagon tile walk-in shower is a breathtaking feature that encompasses the feel of the space. Even the brushed gold hardware and framed mirror were methodically selected with interchangeability in mind. A white porcelain countertop with recessed sink rests on a custom grey cabinet that draws the eye to the elongated tile floor.

This soaking tub, which was completely refinished in a crisp white, is complete with new brushed chrome hardware that gives a nod to the past and lends to the “new rustic” feel. “I love using a combination of materials and this area uses a lot of different detailing to add interest to the white walls.”

“I applied this white wallpaper with metallic gold polka dots for my daughter’s room,” Jessica adds. This whimsical retreat is filled with soft pastels that couple with a bold aqua antique dresser and canvas print. Finishing it all off is a “golden crown” light fixture.

With an active family in mind, completing the lower level was a must. “We definitely needed the extra room but we took a simple approach with design.” A darker grey accent wall is perfect for displaying Jessica’s photography. Comprised of a rustic wood table and antique chair, a small space is perfect for work. But when it comes time for pleasure, a large flat screen television and soft upholstered sofas are the perfect retreat. “Layering rugs is a great way to add texture to any room,” she adds. A corner tufted chair with colorful throw and coordinating pillow stick with tradition while this cowhide rug adds an eclectic feel. With family use in mind, the lower level full bath is a display of form and function. Matte black hardware boldly stand out against the creamy white cabinet with porcelain top. To ensure easy cleaning and durability, a special water resistant tile was selected. “For our son, we wanted something that truly reflects his personality,” she adds. “So we went with a blend of mechanics and country style as seen in the American flag above the headboard. For the other walls, I simply framed blueprints of computer parts to showcase his love for technology.” The second girl’s room in the lower level feels like walking into a secret garden. Neutral furniture and white walls are dotted with bolder tones to reflect their daughter’s personality. “I wanted it to feel like falling leaves,” Jessica says when referring to the wallpaper peonies and frameless mirrors. “Her nightstand actually belonged to my grandmother.” Above, a wood beaded pendant adds organic interest. A home built for living with a designer’s touch, the Jansma family enjoys nearly every part of their bright and open home. And as for all the white, Jessica simply says “I don’t mind a crayon mark here or splatter there. Kids will be kids and the times we enjoy our home most is when our entire family is in it.” n

ake a big statement in an inexpensive way by creating wall art using an engineering print and DIY frame. Also known as an architectural print or blueprint, these oversized prints are available from several local printing centers at an amazing value. The color 36” x 48” print for this project cost about $12 (black and white is $8). Engineering prints are produced on lightweight 20 lb. paper and the printers will not yield a high resolution for photos, so the end product will not be as clear as a typical print from a photo lab. When selecting your photograph, casual snapshots from a vacation or everyday life will likely produce a more satisfying result than a professional portrait where fine detail is expected.

How Virtual Care is Changing Health Care By Donna Farris, Avera Health

I

n 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented a technology that revolutionized how we interact today. Over a century later, 95 percent of Americans now own a cell phone of some kind – 77 percent of that being a smartphone, according to the Pew Research Center.

Today, the innovation of telehealth has carried Bell’s technology further than ever imagined. “The definitions are beginning to change, and it could help to open more channels and connections for insurance coverage to pay for convenient features such as virtual visits,” said Preston Renshaw, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Avera Health Plans and DAKOTACARE. AveraNow is Avera’s platform for real-time, face-to-face visits between providers and patients from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. “AveraNow is a great example of how the addition of visual technology brings providers and patients together in new and exciting ways. It changes the game,” said Renshaw. “Before this sort of service, people could call 76

Electronic medical records (EMR) give advantages to patients as well as care teams by providing details for each health care visit within a health system. Like many health systems, Avera’s EMR, known as AveraChart, provides monitoring of patient records. Via the AveraChart portal, patients can review their medical record and test results through computer or phone, and send questions or requests for prescription refills to their care team. A LONG-STANDING SOLUTION The phone is still a valuable tool within health care. Most health systems provide a hotline for patients and members to utilize. At Avera, patients and members have access to the Avera Medical Call Center and 24/7 Nurse Hotline, both offering around-the-clock access to registered nurses. “You can look things up on the web, but you’re not talking to a real medical professional,” said Renshaw. “A 24/7 nurse hotline allows a medical professional to guide an individual, in real time, to the nearest location if it is an urgent matter.” TELEMEDICINE – THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE

That same urgent response is the backbone of Avera eCARE®, which puts experts in a wide range of medical disciplines “in the room” with providers across the nation, so they can help patients who need them. Avera eCARE also allows specialty visits via telemedicine, saving patients from having to drive – perhaps hundreds of miles – to see a specialist. “All these links allow us not only to connect, but to care for people through a collaboration of experts,” Renshaw said.” n

Smart Hearing: A Smart Device For Your Ears By Jennifer Dumke

C

rowded restaurants, outdoor football games and family reunions; most of us find ourselves encountering at least one of these events or situations at some point during our lives. Now think about what it would be like if you struggled to hear. Suddenly you find yourself leaning in during intimate conversations, asking others to repeat themselves or maybe even distancing yourself or leaving altogether because of the mounting frustration of poor hearing. Sound familiar? Well, you are not alone. Millions of Americans find themselves struggling to hear yet are hesitant to commit to wearing a hearing aid. However, thanks to emerging technology, now is the best time to get tested and start taking back your life while taking advantage of the enhanced features now available.

78

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2019

You’ve heard of smartphones, well, think of it as a “smart” hearing aid. Not only are the new devices much smaller and require minimal maintenance, they also come with features that range from listening to your favorite music to tracking your blood pressure. Emerging technology and stylish, nearly invisible hearing aids are changing the course of hearing aid manufacturing!

MOVE BET TER . FEEL BET TER . LIVE BE T TER .

Some manufacturers offer hearing aids with Bluetooth technology. “These new devices provide advanced wireless performance that is directly connected to your smartphone or other wireless accessories,” says Cushman. “They can even stream phone calls, music or other entertainment options through cell phones.” And while these little extras may seem like small perks, some devices take things one step further and can even save lives. “There are advanced hearing aids available that can be used in conjunction with specialized hearing fitness apps. The data from the earpiece is synced with a fitness tracker that monitors heart rate, blood pressure, activity and sleep.”

Dr. Cheryl Bones, DC

Kelcey Cushman, Au.D, an audiologist at Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat, specializes in treating individuals with the proper hearing aids to fit their needs and lifestyle. “Participating in everyday activities can be difficult when you struggle to hear,” said Cushman. “By utilizing these advanced hearing aids, users can interact with their environment naturally, improving quality of life.”

OPENING JUNE 2019 2333 W 57th St Ste 103 | Sioux Falls prairierootschiro.com

Remember, the most important role of your hearing aid is to improve your hearing. There are many hearing aid options out there, so do your research and talk to a hearing professional to find the best hearing aids for you. While wireless enhancements and connectivity may seem appealing to those who suffer hearing loss, make sure to choose a hearing aid that fits your needs and enhances your life-style and quality of life. n

Kristy Eckhoff-Speck

If you have had a complete hearing evaluation completed by a physician or trained audiologist and they recommend that hearing aids would enhance your quality of life, there are several reasons to take prompt action on your hearing loss. First, not hearing puts unnecessary strain on you and the people around you. Corrected hearing improves relationships, reduces stress, and allows you to live life to the fullest. Secondly, your hearing loss acts like a filter, only letting through sounds you can hear normally. Your brain starts to forget the sounds you are unable to hear which affects your speech understanding. Hearing aids help to preserve your current speech understanding by properly stimulating the auditory nerve. Third, recent studies have shown a direct link between untreated hearing loss and the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

An Unexpected Journey a family faces loss and finds hope By Sanford Health

W

hen Emilee Kunz and her husband decided to add to their family, they assumed having a second child would be just as easy as the first.

But this time, things were more complicated. “I will never forget when I had my first miscarriage,” Emilee says. “I was completely shocked. I just didn’t even know what feelings to feel at first.” And the heartbreak continued when the first miscarriage was followed by three more. “The second you learn you’re pregnant, that baby is a part of your family,” Emilee says. “It just becomes a reality so quickly. And then it’s taken away just as quickly and it’s devastating. Each time was harder and harder.”

80

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2019

Growing confidence After two years of pregnancy loss, Emilee and her husband were referred to the Sanford Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Clinic. The maternal fetal medicine team at Sanford Health specializes in the advanced diagnostic testing and care that can help families navigate high-risk pregnancies. Testing allowed Emilee’s care team to rule out issues that could be causing problems, and the couple was encouraged to continue trying to conceive. Then, when she was pregnant again, Emilee went in for an early ultrasound. She went to the appointment alone – because at this point in their journey, she wasn’t expecting good news.

So the news she got was certainly unexpected. “The ultrasound tech asked what I would think if she told me there were two healthy heartbeats,” Emilee explains. “And I couldn’t think. I just kind of blacked out and was so, so, so excited and then terrified at the same time knowing that this pregnancy could be like the past four.” From that point on, Emilee began working with a high-risk pregnancy specialist at Sanford Health. Pregnancy risks are automatically higher for women carrying multiples and Emilee’s twins were also sharing a placenta. “Our progress was monitored very closely and the babies were thriving,” Emilee says. “I could get a little more excited with each milestone, but I always kept in mind my reality. And they were so good because they navigated me through that.” Twice the joy Emilee successfully delivered twin boys at 36 weeks. Jonah was born first at 5 pounds, followed by his brother Walker four minutes later. Because he weighed in at just 3 pounds, 12 ounces, Walker went to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for specialized care. “Having them split up for almost two weeks was pretty traumatizing, but the care team was so good at keeping us in tune,” Emilee says. Within the first couple days they were able to bring Jonah to the NICU to visit his brother. “We got to hold the boys together for the first time and it was so cool. Walker’s heart monitor completely calmed,” Emilee says. “He was so content with his brother right there. That was probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced.” Trusting the journey Now approaching their first birthdays, the twins have settled into life at home. “It honestly feels like our family is complete,” Emilee says. And while the process of adding to their family wasn’t always easy, Emilee remains thankful for the perspective it gave her. “There are so many women who go through this. I learned the reality of it, that it is a process to mourn your baby after a miscarriage,” she says. “I just started leaning on people more and that’s what I hope other women can do.” For more information about Sanford Fertility & Reproductive Medicine visit sanfordhealth.org. n

OVERCOMING PAIN SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY “Compounded transdermal pain medications may offer benefits such as customizable dosages and formulations, the ability to combine multiple drugs with various mechanisms of action, the likelihood of lower systemic absorption with minimization of side effects, more convenience and consequent improved adherence to treatment regimens, and minimization of risk of abuse and addiction.” – Cheri Kraemer, RPh and Owner, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic

Topical Pain Medication Offers Personalized, Customized Alternative to Traditional Oral Medications Living with pain is one of the most common reasons Americans request medical assistance. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined! Traditionally, first-line treatment options for pain relief are typically oral pain medications; however, concerns with side effects, prescription drug abuse, risk of overdose, and patient non-adherence are a few of the factors that provide challenges for both healthcare providers and patients. Although opioid prescriptions have decreased in South Dakota over the last three years, according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 40 people die every day across the nation from overdoses involving them. Last month alone, 4.3 million Americans engaged in the non-medical use of prescription opioids. For these reasons, healthcare providers have become increasingly interested in new ways to manage pain and develop customized treatment plans for their patients. In Sioux Falls, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic crafts compounded topical pain medications that offer benefits such as customizable dosages and formulations, the ability to combine multiple drugs with various mechanisms of action, the likelihood of lower systemic absorption with minimization of side effects, more convenience and consequent improved adherence to treatment regimens,

and minimization of risk of abuse and addiction. If you’re wondering if a compounded topical pain medication may be an option for you, consult your provider, or call and speak to a compounding pharmacist at Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic for more information. In addition, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic has a mobile app available for Apple and Android smartphones that allows patients to order refills, gives dosing reminders and notifications when prescriptions are ready as well as notifications of monthly discounts and specials. In addition, prescriptions can either be picked up in the clinic or mailed for your convenience. Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic is located at 2333 W 57th Street, Suite 109 in Sioux Falls and is open from 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Melissa Vande Kieft learning the art of living in the wait By Jill Funke | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

M

elissa Vande Kieft is a person who thoroughly enjoys the life she has been given. Her official work title is event planner, and when she is not at work, this vivacious lady considers herself a blogger and educator. Yet with all of her activities and responsibilities, Melissa says that her husband Ryan is her number one priority. “I love living life with Ry. We enjoy the outdoors and most Saturday’s we can be found watching college sports.” This effervescent woman feels that she comes by her personality honestly. Parental job opportunities meant Melissa’s family moved many different times and she attended six different schools while she was growing up. She says, “Each time we moved, I had to muster up the courage to start over and make new friends. It was hard, but this experience cultivated a desire to meet and connect with others on an authentic and vulnerable level.” Reflecting on her childhood years, she continues, “While this experience wasn’t something I enjoyed at the time, I can look back and see how this shaped me into the person I am today.” Melissa’s upbringing helped her face her toughest life challenge when she and Ryan began navigating infertility. After a year of trying to start a family, the couple’s OBGYN suggested that Melissa’s fallopian tubes be tested for blockages to see if that was preventing conception. When no issues were found, they were referred to a reproductive endocrinologist who conducted a battery of tests on both Melissa and Ryan. After the testing was complete, the Vande Kieft’s learned that they were experiencing unexplained infertility as no medical reason could be given for their struggle to conceive. Ryan made it clear to Melissa from the beginning that it was their journey together, not just hers. Knowing they were facing this challenge together laid the foundation for how they managed the rollercoaster ride they were on. “It created a safe space for us to communicate and be vulnerable with our thoughts and feelings. I’m so grateful and thankful he voiced that truth over our situation from the very beginning.” Following the news that their infertility was unexplained, Melissa was left feeling a loss. “It was a very confusing diagnosis. While it was difficult to accept that there was no medical situations to address, it was also reassuring that there were no major issues.” At the same time, she still felt that something must be preventing

pregnancy. As their conception journey continued, Melissa went through two different occasions of polyp detection and removal, as well as a process of injecting optimized sperm into Melissa’s uterus. After those steps did not result in conception, Melissa says that the couple began to mentally prepare themselves for the process of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). “That first IVF appointment was very emotional. This process costs thousands of dollars and I couldn’t believe that this could be our future. I felt an extreme sense of loss for my hopes and dreams, and for what I wanted my life to look like.” It was at that point when the Vande Kiefts were informed about the option of fertility care, and after doing research, the couple felt called to take that route. Melissa explains, “We were hopeful that working through fertility care would be helpful in determining the underlying cause of our inability to conceive.” She agreed to have her blood tested every other day for the month of a menstrual cycle, which revealed a rapid drop in hormone levels following ovulation. It was then, at last, that the couple had a probable reason for their struggle, as well as a treatment plan of hormone injections.

Living in the Wait Melissa delved into infertility research from the moment the couple was first diagnosed. She also searched for support and connections with others walking down a similar conception path. “I did not want to do this alone. Infertility is a sensitive topic and rarely talked about openly with family, friends or the public.” The further she went in her research, the more disappointed she was in what little she uncovered. “I found that resources and support are minimal, which brings us to how Living in the Wait began.” Living in the Wait is the website and blog that Melissa created after her extensive search for infertility support. She says that the waiting she and her husband went through while trying to conceive, as well as a desire to use her experiences to support others were the catalysts for the website. “It was also at this time that God began speaking to me about the whole concept of waiting, its purpose and how to live in it. Waiting had captivated my heart and mind and I wanted to dig deeper into this idea and what it meant for our lives.” She began to question how she could continue to live while waiting for her heart’s desire. It was then that she says, “I felt God nudging me to start a blog to help others wrestling with this same question, which applies to all of us, not just those going through infertility.” Melissa embraced this calling. “I told Him if waiting is part of our story, I want to

get the most out of it. I personally needed encouragement and support during our infertility journey and wanted to do the same for others. Having a platform created the opportunity for me to reach people on a larger scale.” After posting her first blogs, Melissa says she received numerous encouraging messages from others in the surrounding community and all over the world. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive and supportive feedback since starting Living in the Wait.” Many of these messages convey the fact that readers found exactly what they needed to hear in Melissa’s words, and her blogs have helped them in their wait. She comments, “It’s a humbling reminder of how powerful our words are and the ability they have to bring life to others. It’s created opportunities to share my message on other platforms I never dreamed about including the creation of a podcast, guest features and collaborations.” In addition to uplifting messages, Melissa is also grateful and humbled by the stories that readers have bravely shared with her. She considers her website more than just a place to post messages. “That’s what this community is about and why it’s so important to create a safe and welcoming place for people to share the personal parts of their lives. Because that is real life and we’re all searching for ways to navigate through it.” This journey through infertility brought Melissa and her husband full circle as they are currently raising their daughter, 90

Crosbee Grace (born May 18, 2019). They found that heartache and excitement can coexist, which is a reminder to live in the wait, because what comes after waiting isn’t always guaranteed. Melissa explains, “That’s why I made the most of being pregnant. I didn’t want to rush the process because I don’t know if I’ll get to experience it again.” To others who are in the middle of a challenge, Melissa advises they make the most of their wait. “We will all have something in life we’re not prepared for. Most often this struggle isn’t immediately resolved and we grow impatient. Waiting is often the hardest part, but we don’t get to choose what things in life we wait for or how long the wait will be.” Whether waiting for a family, job, spouse, healing or anything, this new mom reminds others that the in-between times are meant to be lived to the fullest. She says, “Even though my particular wait is over, I know I’ll experience many more in my lifetime, which is why the concept of making the most of your wait needs to live on. That’s why the message of Living in the Wait is so important and is something I will continue advocating for and spreading awareness about.” Melissa encourages those in a waiting situation to intentionally do the things they enjoy and make them feel alive. Offering her last piece of inspiration, she says, “Be intentional about what brings you joy. And know that while you are waiting, God is still actively working in and through you.” n

ave you ever seen a Thunderbirds air show and those death-defying diamond formations? If not, you’ll have your chance when one of the best air shows in the country performs in Sioux Falls for their 2019 show, “Power on the Prairie.” Called “America’s Ambassadors in Blue,” the Thunderbirds are a select group of over 120 enlisted airmen and 11 officers who put on daring aerial displays at shows throughout the county while showcasing the role of the U.S. Air Force. The hour-long air show lets people get up close to some of the world’s finest aircrafts, and interact with the men and women who fly them. Recently the team welcomed a new female pilot, Capt. Michelle Curran. A native of Medford, Wisconsin, Curran beame only the

fourth female pilot in the history of the Thunderbirds and their second female solo pilot in 66 years. “There are so many strong women who have paved the way for me to be able to do what I do today,” Capt. Curran said in an Air Force interview. “From the WASPs in WWII, to the first female fighter pilot in the Air Force, Jeannie Leavitt. They have broken barriers and done great things.” Curran flies Thunderbird No. 6, also known as the opposing solo pilot. She demonstrates the F-16’s capabilities during performances. Her favorite maneuver is the “vertical roll,” which involves pointing the plane up or down while rolling over. In an interview posted on the Thunderbirds’ website, Curran, whose call sign is “Mace,” was asked what it was like to climb into the Thunderbird jet for the first time.

“I was definitely nervous and excited, but there was so much to learn that is specific to the Thunderbirds that those feelings were overshadowed by the focus need to keep up with the jet,” she explained. “There was still definitely a surreal moment, while holding short of the runway, where I was in a bit of disbelief that I had actually been selected and was about to take off for my first flight.” Curran graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2009 with a degree in criminal justice and had considered being a crime scene investigator. Halfway through, she decided to get her pilot’s wings because she “wanted to be part of something with a bigger purpose,” she said in the website interview. Local aviation enthusiasts will have their chance to see and meet the Air Force pilots during the Sioux Falls Air and Space Show at the Sioux Falls Municipal Airport on August 17-18. or licensed professional counselor Kristy Eckhoff-Speck, M.A., QMHP, LPC-MH, helping others sort through everyday chaos to find happiness and peace has been her calling for more than twenty-five years. As the founder and owner of Maximum Health, she has spent years specializing in residential treatment centers for children and adolescents as well as community mental health. Today, she works with adults, teens, children, couples, and families who are struggling to manage issues such as anxiety, depression, attachment issues, marital issues, trauma and post-traumatic stress. In addition, Kristy is interested in working with parents of children who suffer from attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. She notes, “A unique aspect of my practice is teaching parents who have children that have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder effective parenting skills. Parenting these children can be very frustrating. Often, parents are not equipped with the needed skills or knowledge to assist their child and therefore the parent/child relationship often suffers. At Maximum Health, I am able to give parents skills and tools that will help and will lead to a closer and more intimate relationship with their child.”

One of the most challenging aspects of divorce is timing – while you’re going through what is often an extraordinarily personal, life-altering process, you’re also being asked to make a series of unfamiliar legal and financial decisions – the effects of which you could feel years into the future. We work with you and your attorneys to provide clarity on all the financial issues surrounding divorce, helping you avoid any financial pitfalls and laying a foundation for financial stability after the divorce is finalized. leverly articulated in the name is the meaning and purpose behind this new boutique nestled in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. “Terra is the Latin word for planet earth and Shepherd represents us as humans beings serving as the caretakers and keepers of our planet and the creatures that inhabit it,” shares owner Sara Jamison. “My husband suggested this name back when I was planning and dreaming about what it would look like. Terra Shepherd stuck in my heart and mind immediately.” When dreaming of her boutique, downtown Sioux Falls was the only location she ever envisioned because so many of her major life moments happened downtown. From her first date with husband Brent, to his marriage proposal, their wedding and telling their in-laws they would become grandparents to their son Henry. With so many firsts happening downtown, it was the perfect location for Terra Shepherd as the first boutique offering products focused on sustainability. Terra Shepherd offers

sustainable fashion, beauty and wellness products that are good for both people and the planet. Sara found her passion for retail working for Scheels. It was there she gained indispensable knowledge and experience along with a desire to do things a different way. “ I love the world of fashion and retail, explains Sara, but I believe we can and must do better.” Sara believes that consumers deserve to expect more from the products they purchase including fair wages and safe working conditions for the individuals who create these products, sustainable production practices and products made without the use of harmful chemicals. “Customers should not have to sacrifice style to honor these values,” says Sara. This is why Sara has put a lot of thought and attention in the selection of products at Terra Shepherd. She sought products made with sustainable materials, considered the manner in which materials were sourced, the product production process, the ingredients used, the observance of fair trade practices and product packaging. “As consumers, we have more power to create change than we realize. We create demand in the product categories where we choose to spend our dollars. Small shifts in our buying habits have the potential to create a tremendous change in the fashion and beauty industry “, expresses Sara. Customers that shop at Terra Shepheard can harness their buying power by being able to shop for products that meet sustainable standards.
