After you have been with your partner for several years, you may start to feel the love and romance begin to fade. A relationship can become stagnant when the involved parties stop keeping the romance alive. Planning a mystery date might be just what you need to maintain the fun and excitement in your relationship. Sioux Falls is abundant in fun events and outdoor activities to make your summer mystery date-night one that your spouse will never forget!
If you need a little inspiration, scroll through social media and you will find different iterations of the idea where one couple blindly picks between two cards that have different activities on them. Spice things up and consider activities and locations that neither of you has attempted before. If you want to play on the safe side, choose activities and locals that you both love. As you begin to make your list of potential mystery dates, you will want to decide between a day date or an evening date.
Let’s begin with some daytime date options. Sioux Falls has multiple beautiful parks and recreation areas that offer fun activities.
KAYAKING: Try kayaking down Split Rock Creek with a route that runs through northeastern Minnehaha County.
WILD WATER WEST: Another fun water activity would be spending the day at Wild Water West Waterpark to enjoy the swim-up bar and lazy river.
DISC GOLF OR TRADITIONAL GOLF: You could also try disc golf at Spencer, Tomar, or Tuthill Parks in Sioux Falls. Many local retailers sell affordable discs. If you are up for more of a challenge, try traditional golfing as one of your activities. There are several great 9 and 18-hole golf courses in and around the area.
SCULTPURE WALK OR WINE TASTING:
A couple of relaxing options might be to take a stroll down Phillips Avenue and take in the Sculpture Walk that ends at Falls Park, or spend the afternoon wine tasting at a local vineyard.
MOONLIGHT MOVIE OR CONCERT
AT THE LEVITT: If an evening date is more suitable for your relationship, give your spouse the option of watching a moonlight movie at Fawick Park on the 2nd Thursday of each month or catching a concert at the Levitt on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening starting in June.
FIRST FRIDAY: Or, take in First Friday Downtown Sioux Falls. On the First Friday of each month local shops, bars, restaurants, and galleries run specials, and events creating an entertaining datenight downtown.
PATIO DINNER AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT: You don’t have to be downtown to enjoy a patio, good food, and entertainment. Sioux Falls has numerous great restaurants that have large outdoor patios for you to enjoy on your mystery date!

The 52nd Annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival is scheduled to take place on July 8th and 9th at Pioneer Park on West Highway 14 in Brookings, South Dakota. Over 175 regional and national juried artists will showcase their original work in 15 art categories. Visitors can meet artists that design, create, and represent their work during the festival. The art on display ranges from traditional paintings, pottery, and jewelry to functional woodwork and mixed media pieces, providing something for everyone. Shari Avery, a member of the Board of Directors, often describes the festival as an “outdoor extravaganza of art, food, and entertainment.”
The Media Award winner at the 2022 Festival was Doug Hicks from Gem Lake, MN. His business, Faces in Wood, is a reflection of his unique creations. Doug has been a loyal attendee of the Brookings Summer
Arts Festival for over three decades, using Western Cottonwood bark to carve faces and figures. However, with a new supply of basswood, he ventured into creating colorful gnomes that caught the attention of the BSAF Awards Committee. In fact, Doug’s carvings became the inspiration for the 2023 Brookings Summer Arts Festival logo. When asked about his work, Doug stated, “As an artist, I’m always seeking to create something new for art patrons, and I enjoy the challenge.”
To fully enjoy the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bringing sunscreen, and bringing a hearty appetite! With 38 juried food booths available, there are plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. The festival also features continuous entertainment on three stages, in addition to talented artists and delicious food. Shuttle buses are available on both days, providing
convenient transportation from the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum parking lot. The cost is just $2 one way, and the buses drop off guests on the park’s east side. For more information, please visit www. bsaf.com
Make the most of your visit to Brookings and the Brookings Summer Arts Festival by planning a full day of exploration in the area. Consider visiting some notable Brookings destinations, such as the South Dakota Art Museum, McCrory Gardens, and the Children’s Museum of South Dakota.
The South Dakota Art Museum found at 1036 Medary Avenue, is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. It showcases the diverse legacy of South Dakota and offers exhibits, events,

McCrory Gardens, a botanical garden and arboretum on the eastern edge of the SDSU campus features a living museum of plants and offers education, conservation, and display programs. The Children’s Museum of South Dakota provides interactive exhibits and programming for children of all ages and abilities. AMidwest small-town presents much more than meets the eye. Sioux Falls and surrounding cities offer several options for fun on a budget. So grab the kids (yes, this includes your fur babies) and your favorite cup of Joe in preparation for a low-stress family staycation!
Start your trip in Centerville, South Dakota. Home of the delicious “Zebra Donut,” stopping at the Royal Bake Shop is a must! After everyone’s bellies are full, head down the street to their retro bowling alley, Mushy’s. With the majority of the interior remaining untouched from when it was originally built, the neon colors and old-fashioned lanes create an incredible atmosphere! You may need to brush up on your score-keeping skills, as this alley requires you to keep score! With tired arms from a funfilled morning of bowling, drive south to Vermillion to visit the National Music Museum on the University of South Dakota’s college campus. With over 15,000 instruments,
this museum is a hidden gem of culture and history. To end the day, spend the night eating smores in one of Yankton’s several state recreation camping areas.
After spending the morning enjoying swimming in the Missouri River, take a road trip to Le Mars, Iowa. Known as the original home of Blue Bunny ice cream, the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor should make a spot on your list. The gift shop is also worth a look for people of any age. For a relaxing, entertaining evening, the Browns Theater hosts live music dinner shows! If you’re looking for an adorable place to stay, the Inn on Central is a boutiquestyle hotel just across the street from the theater.
The only thing I love more than a Midwest summer day is a day full of fun, FREE activities! Start the morning at one of over 80 Sioux Falls city parks. Located right off Interstate-229, Spencer Park is easily accessible from any part of town. Additionally, Spencer Park has a variety of activities for all types of families. If you have younger
children, they will have a blast on the blacktop playground. Older children can take a shot at the 9-hole frisbee golf course. Dog owners or not, the Spencer Dog Park must be a stop on your list. There is something therapeutic about watching the carefree pups play! To complete the morning, enjoy a picnic under the covered shelter. In the afternoon, take a brief trip up Cliff Avenue to McKennan Park and catch a break from the heat in the free wading pool. If your kiddos are a bit older, McKennan Park accommodates all. Utilize the other McKennan Park amenities by turning the afternoon into a tennis or horseshoe tournament! The final destination to top off your incredible summer staycation is just a few minutes north of McKennan Park at Fawick Park in Downtown Sioux Falls. Each Saturday throughout the summer, DTSF hosts outdoor Moonlight Movies. Snacks are available for purchase, but admission is FREE – just like the theme of this staycation. n

All too often the adverse effects seen with aging of men are blamed on declining testosterone levels. If you’re trying to stick with the trends, that is the best option for your shopping cart. But, hey! It’s never wrong to pick a swimsuit that makes you feel your absolute best in any style. Every swimsuit is beach ready!
My absolute favorite thing to wear to the beach is my favorite swimsuit paired with a neutral-colored, transparent coverup. Are we in a recession? Economists have varying opinions, partly because there isn’t an official definition.
Many analysts use the common standard of two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. But the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a private research organization which maintains a chronology of the beginning and ending dates of U.S. recessions, defines recession broadly, as “a significant decline in economic activity that spreads across the country and lasts more than a few months.”
NBER records show ten official recessions in the US since the Great Depression in 1933. The last, in 2007 after the housing bubble burst, caused unemployment to reach as high as 9.5% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
For you and your family, the definition of what’s happening isn’t as important as how you navigate it. Here are five essential tips to help you plan for uncertain times.
Stock your emergency fund. Slowing economy or not, an emergency fund to cover expenses for three to six months will help you manage an emergency or unexpected job loss. Figure out what
you spend each month and get your budget in order.
Re-evaluate your expenditures. Review every monthly expense such as insurance, utilities and cell phone bills and challenge yourself to find savings in each category. Remember even small expenses like monthly subscriptions can impact your emergency fund.
Prioritize paying down debt. Some experts suggest paying down high-interest debt first. Others promote the snowball method of tackling the smallest balance first, then adding that payment to what you normally pay toward the next smallest balance and work your way up to the loan or credit card with the biggest balance. If you are not sure where to start, talk to your financial professional about what might work best for you.
Focus on your long-term plan. Heading into a recession can be a good time to buy stocks because prices can be lower. Tempting if you have savings to invest. These include pasta made from edamame (soybeans), black beans, chickpeas, or chia. Thanks to the popularity of Korean and Japanese cuisines, other options you could try are kelp noodles, shirataki noodles (created from the konjac yam), and cellophane noodles (made from mung beans, potato or sweet potato starch or tapioca). You can also
substitute pasta with zoodles (spiralized zucchini) or spaghetti squash, which naturally shreds after cooking into spaghetti-like fibers that are fun to eat.

First and foremost, make sure your patio is in tip-top shape. Winter can be hard on outdoor spaces like wood decks, patio pavers, and cement slabs. Patio furniture and outdoor rugs may need replacing every couple of years as the harsh elements of sun and rain can fade these items quickly. If you don’t already have a covered deck, consider adding shade to stay cool while dining in the open air. Some options to create shade and privacy are building a pergola, setting up an awning using outdoor fabric, or even popping open an outdoor umbrella. When you can stay cool and out of the sun, you can utilize the space any
time of the day. Making your space functional will mean spending more time enjoying food and drink with your friends and family al fresco style.

Teamwork makes the dream work! A Sioux Falls native, Miranda Nolte, inspired by her love of the mountains, had dreams of building a mountain modern home. This homeowner is quick to give her builder, Chad McCoy of McCoy Construction, and his team credit for building her dream home. Along with McCoy Construction, she says she curated the perfect team of local small businesses to help achieve her vision.
Miranda explained, “I visited several homes on the Sioux Empire Parade of Homes for a couple of years and wrote down the names of builders that I liked. From there, I contacted and interviewed a handful of builders and had several meetings before ultimately choosing McCoy Construction. There’s something about Chad McCoy’s character and personality that reminds me of my brother, that felt comfortable. I knew what I wanted, and Chad was excited and eager to build the house design that I envisioned, he let me take the reins.”
From the moment you open the front door into this stunning home, it is clear that Miranda made the right choice in trusting McCoy Construction to make her vision a reality. Miranda said, “I knew how I wanted my floor plan to flow, Chad sketched it on paper while I explained the layout room by room. The two main features that were a must for me - sprawling ceiling heights and as much natural light as possible.” Miranda achieved her goal because all of the windows she added amplified the natural light, showcasing the glistening pond in her backyard.
There are one-of-a-kind features everywhere you look that make this home truly unique. The kitchen range hood adorned with the hide of an Axis deer is a prime example of Miranda’s noteworthy style. Miranda had never seen this done but once she dreamt it up in her mind, she said she just had to have it. She proposed the idea to her cabinet designer, Shelly with Sioux Falls Kitchen & Bath, and together they made it happen. The end result is showstopping and makes for a kitchen style that is second to none. Miranda has a knack for creating special moments in spaces. The purpose of the Axis hide in the kitchen was to tie in the carpet on the staircase landing that has an Axis deer print design. The round black iron hand-railing made by Jesse with JG Metal is wrapped in a cognac leather strap that is typically used for bicycle handles. Miranda and her parents spent two afternoons meticulously wrapping the entire top rail. The leather wrap will patina over time and that look is what Miranda is eager to create. JG Metals also fabricated the suspended iron shelving that Miranda designed for her wine and whisky bar as well as a wall hook for hanging throw blankets. Miranda says she loves to mix and match prints and textures. She incorporates several different textures throughout and they all add warmth to her home.
Another team player that Miranda talks highly of is Justin with Banking Barns from Hills, MN, whom she met at the Sioux Empire Home Show. She hired Justin to make her 9ft long black walnut live edge dining table that features black epoxy down the center. She fell in love with the beauty of black walnut, so she asked Justin to make her floating shelves, stunning black walnut cabinets on each side of the fireplace, a mudroom bench, and butcher block countertops in the pantry and laundry room. His wood creations helped her achieve that warm cabin feel while keeping the modern touch.
All bathrooms are spectacular and have Miranda's character packed in them. The primary bathroom has 24”x 24” porcelain tile with lots of dreamy soft movement in tones of beige. The half bath is sophisticated with 3D geometric black wall tiles, three offset black granite vanity shelves, a black vessel sink, and a black toilet. The black and white wall design in the Jack-and-Jill kid’s bathroom was hand-painted by Jillian with Jillian Artistry. The hand-painted walls tie in beautifully with the ‘Good Vibes’ art deco tile inlay in front of the vanity.
Not one detail has been overlooked in this home, even several of the ceilings and walls have special treatments. The great room boasts 22 ft ceilings with expansive wood beams, the center beam measuring 28 ft long. Miranda pulled JG Metals in again to add black iron details to the beams. The primary bedroom has black textured wallpaper and a suspended cloud ceiling finished with black car siding and up-lighting.

By age five, most young children will have had an ear infection. Ear infections can be the source of frustration for children, babies, and parents alike. They can be painful, persistent, cause high fevers, and sleepless nights making them a common reason for families to visit a care provider.
Most ear infections will resolve without surgical intervention with a dose of antibiotics. But in some children, ear infections may become chronic. If your child gets an infection every other month, ear tubes may be the answer. We caught up with Dr. Thomas Tamura, an ENT physician at Midwest ENT & Allergy, to get the scoop on why some kids need ear tubes and what ear tubes do.
According to Dr. Tamura, there are two primary reasons that children need ear tubes. “One reason is recurrent middle ear infections; the other is a problem with persistent fluid in the ear, which is usually discovered because a child is experiencing hearing loss.”
Children become candidates for ear tubes when they have had three to four infections in a 6-month period of time, or the ear fluid does not resolve over a 3-month period.
“The bottom line is that; there is fluid trapped behind the eardrum,” Dr. Tamura explained.
“Typically, the Eustachian tubes in the ears work by allowing air in and fluid to drain out. If the Eustachian tube doesn’t open, the fluid can’t get out, which causes an infection or hearing loss, or sometimes both.
“By placing a hole in the eardrum with a small stent, air pressure is allowed to not only come in but
provides ventilation and allows the fluid to drain out,” Dr. Tamura said.
Ear tubes are tiny cylinders that allow air to move into the middle ear. The tubes are implanted during a short surgical procedure. The procedure itself takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Following the procedure, children are usually back to normal the next day. The tubes stay in place for about six months to a year and generally fall out on their own. Most children outgrow the problem as they get older.
According to the most recent data, there are commonly two times that children need ear tubes: between the ages of 15 months and three years (usually because of recurrent ear infections) or between the ages of four and six (typically to treat hearing loss due to fluid build-up).
Ear tube surgery is the most common childhood surgery performed with anesthesia. The American Academy of Otolaryngology reports more than 500,000 children’s ear tube surgeries are performed yearly.

There are clear-cut indicators that mean basalcell carcinoma is affecting you. This common skin cancer shows up in certain ways, and anyone can get it treated in a timely fashion if they know what to look for.
“Basal-cell skin cancers are the most common skin cancer, and while they are rarely fatal, they are often disfiguring,” said Jenny Nelson, MD, Avera Medical Group dermatological surgeon. “When they develop and are not treated, it can lead to the removal of a nose, an ear, or the development of a large ulcer on the skin.”
Skin inflammations, especially those that will not heal for weeks or months, or ones that seem to return again and again, could indicate basal cell skin cancer.
“If you have a tender sore that always bleeds or a bright pink patch of skin, you should have it examined,” Nelson said.
She said something that almost looks like a rash should also be checked out; this condition can appear as a shiny spot on your skin or a color change that never seems to go away.
Basal cell skin cancers can appear as mild injuries, such as a small cut or a bug bite that itches.
“They can be a problem if they never seem to heal. They were likely a basal cell development that was then injured,” Nelson said. The lack of healing is a telling sign the skin lesion is something more serious, she added.
Some basal-cell skin cancers will not bleed but instead form a crusty surface. In other cases, they will develop into a clear, almost pearl-colored bump that sometimes has red streaks.
“Those streaks are blood vessels, and usually are tell-tale signs of a basal cell condition,” said Nelson.
Nelson said that when caught early, this troublesome skin cancer can be treated. But timing is vital.
“If they are left untreated, they can lead to significant damage in the area where they develop – in some cases leading to surgical removal of surrounding skin or tissue,” she said.
Surgical treatment, such as Mohs surgery, can help people avoid disfiguring procedures.

If you ask someone what orthodontic treatment is, most will reply, “Braces to straighten teeth.”
The word orthodontics comes from the Greek language. Ortho means straight, and dontia means teeth! Although straightening the teeth is what most people desire, they may not realize many additional benefits to orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment will help improve your bite, reduce the risk of tooth fracture due to bite trauma, and avoid gum problems and the premature wear on enamel. Straight teeth also allow for better speech and chewing ability. When teeth are in proper alignment, it is easier to keep them clean since the toothbrush and floss have better access to clean the surface of plaque, bacteria, and
food debris. As a secondary benefit, people with straight teeth tend to be more committed and motivated in keeping them clean and healthy!
When children are young and don’t yet have all of their adult teeth, orthodontic treatment is typically geared towards addressing specific problems to help avoid later complications. Treatment can be as simple as a space maintainer to hold space for permanent teeth that have yet to come in. Also, when the teeth erupt and are crisscrossed or biting improperly, it’s necessary to move them early to avoid enamel damage or gum problems. Jaw issues often can be better addressed with an orthodontic appliance during growth stages, having an orthopedic benefit making future treatment more effective.
In teens and adults, we can treat the teeth more “comprehensively” since all the permanent teeth have erupted in the mouth. Modern orthodontic techniques can involve braces or clear aligners like Invisalign. What is best for you? That depends! Some bite issues are more effectually treated with traditional braces versus aligners, but often both are practical options. Aligners work great for many people, but you should consult your dentist or orthodontist to see which would be best for you. Aligners are heavily dependent on compliance. If you wear them, they are effective, but if you have them in your pocket more often than in your mouth, they will not be effective. I always tell my patients that it is a commitment. If you are willing to wear them properly, they may be the right choice! If you think you may lose motivation or want the process out of your control, traditional braces may be a better option. The same applies to teens! Some are great rule followers and will fully comply during treatment, while others may have trouble being 100% dedicated to the process leading to longer treatment times or a compromised outcome.

Staci Martinez has blazed an unconventional path as a female welder in an industry comprised mostly of men. Recently achieving a personal goal of adding a piece to the Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk, this driven lady hits life head-on as she throws herself into raising a family, working as a health coach, and pulling out all the stops to lift her businesses to success.
Staci was born and raised in Sioux Falls. As a young adult, she resided in Phoenix, AZ, and returned to Sioux Falls shortly after starting a family with her husband, Joe. About nine years ago, when this enterprising woman was working at Twin City Fan, she was responsible for inventory, shipping, receiving, and even learned to use the forklift to transport items to the welders. At one point, the company experienced a shortage of welders, and Staci’s boss asked her if she wanted to learn how to weld. Her initial reaction was to decline the offer. Yet she is not one to let a lack of experience or background keep her from trying, and when she found the courage to try welding, she got hooked. “I fell in love. I was addicted.”
When Joe launched their flooring business, Phoenician Wood Floors, Staci quit her job to work with him. Three years ago, she returned to welding when her husband bought her a welder and grinder. Fortunately, Staci already had most of the tools needed. She has been accumulating clamps and other items along the way, including a CNC plasma cutter machine that offers more possibilities for fabrication art and more extensive projects and sculptures. During this time, Staci also used her creativity in wood burning and restoring furniture. Along the way, Staci launched her welding company, 605 Shield Maiden, and under that business, she completes odd and custom projects that come her way. Allowing the business to grow gradually kept her from borrowing funds upfront, as she says, “Starting slow, I avoided spending money for tools and equipment that I hadn’t earned from projects.”
In addition to working as a fitness coach, caring for her three children, and creating everything from handrails to sculptures in her home garage welding shop, Staci also helps her husband with flooring installations whenever he needs an extra set of hands. On the administrative side of the businesses, Staci is responsible for many efforts, including social media. Understanding that opportunity is often disguised as hard work, Staci gladly rolls up her sleeves to tackle whatever each day might bring. She has also learned to embrace the unknown and utters a motto “Fate favors the fearless.” Staci continues, “If I am scared to do something, that’s what I know I need to do.” Yet in the middle of coaching clients, helping Joe with projects, and taking care of her family, she longs for the occasions when she is in her garage shop, using her imagination to dream up new creations as she says, “Welding allows me to bring out the creativity in me.” Losing herself in her art, Staci can block out everything else in her life at the time. “When I put my hood down and have my headphones on, there is no one in the world but me at that time.”
A woman in a male-dominated field like welding can experience various challenges. The scrap metal and wood used for many projects can be heavy. Luckily, Staci’s fitness coaching helps keep her in prime shape and able to lift most of the materials for projects. The satisfaction she feels from creating new works from materials left over from other projects is an added benefit of her craft. Even though women make up a tiny percentage of welders, this number is growing. Staci feels blessed to have a network of other female welders that reach out to each other and offer support, technique suggestions, and solutions to problems. Collectively, they realize what they are up against, yet they unite under a simple philosophy; as Staci says, “There are challenges we face being in a man’s world, but we just let the work do the talking.”
Called to respond to the needs of others whenever possible, Staci is incredibly passionate about giving of herself. She was humbled when asked to donate an art piece to the Compass Center Gala that raises funds used for services provided to sexual and domestic violence survivors. When presented with opportunities to speak about or demonstrate welding for students and particularly young ladies, Staci gladly lends her time and encouragement. She has even judged welding competitions, created the welder’s choice award for a local high school competition, and is part of the Hooded Heroes Foundation, which helps struggling welding students purchase the personal protective equipment and other items required in that line of work. Realizing the impact a solid start can have on the career trajectory in welding, particularly for young ladies, Staci advises young adults, “This is your road to independence.”
On the artistic side of her business, Staci has participated in conventions and networked with other like-minded welders. These experiences have helped her find belonging within the welding art community; she says, “I finally feel like I fit, and I never really felt I fit with other groups.” Staci also auditioned three times for the Tough as Nails TV series and created the emblem for the grill of the truck presented to the winner of season one. Staci’s most noticeably prominent work is the metal gnome displayed on the Sioux Falls sculpture walk. Being on the walk was one of Staci’s goals on her vision board, alongside other goals and dreams, including travel. As she checks items off the board one at a time, she looks back on a life of bravely confronting new experiences that propel confidence to face whatever the future will bring. n
