Frugal Family Fun: Scare Up Boos on a Budget DIY Halloween Costume Ideas for the Whole Family By Jennifer Dumke

H

alloween is scary enough without having to find a budget to purchase costly costumes. Keep your kids happy without breaking the bank and have some frugal family fun at the same time. Make this year memorable by creating perfect DIY Halloween costumes that are fun to make and will save you money. But first, let’s sack the stigma of the “homemade costume.” Yes, some may need to get down to basics with the classic bedsheet ghost, but today’s trends embrace hands-on creativity that appeals to all. ALL IN THE FAMILY Go full-on family and pick a theme that coordinates all the members of your troop. Depending on the gender, ages

12

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

and number of family members, a family-themed creation is clever and cute. For families with babies or toddlers, popular themes include Wizard of Oz, Little Red Riding Hood and Alice in Wonderland. For couples and families with older children, get colorful and make crayon costumes or try being S’mores. Materials needed are a collapsible white hamper for the marshmallow, cardboard and tin foil for the chocolate bar and large pieces of cardboard for the graham crackers. If you have a toddler or family pet, fill a wagon with tissue paper “flames” and nestle in your little one. And for those looking for simple themes or last minute ideas, there is something for everybody. If you’ve taken a trip to Disney and likely purchased some serious swag, a Disney

Tourist family is a great way to get some use out of all those mouse ears. If you don’t have enough shirts for everybody, pick a plain t-shirt and do an iron-on Disney decal. Don’t have ears for everyone, find a headband and simply attach two round ears made from cardboard. Color as you like. It can also be a fun way to bring up memories of the trip.

The Flavor Starts Now.

Are you paying the high cost of a nursing home?

JUST FOR KIDS Rain, rain go away, come back…on Halloween? Simple yet creative, dress up your kiddo as a rain cloud. It’s super easy, fun to make and is under $15 to create. You may even have some of the craft supplies already, but even if you don’t, this is the perfect look for less. Materials needed are a wide brim hat, polyester batting, long beads for raindrops and both spray adhesive and hot glue. And now there’s the last-minute costume. These are classics that often reflect true creativity and family fun. Go as a cluster of grapes by simply purchasing green or red balloons. For best results, wear the same color long-sleeve shirt underneath the colored balloons in either red and green and start pinning the balloons all around. Finish off with some leaves in your hair. For girls, dig out their formal attire, grab a tiara and create a simple white sash finished off with a small bouquet of flowers and get creative with what your kiddo was crowned as a beauty pageant winner. And this takes us to our next idea. Beauty doesn’t come easy, make a simple spa girl costume with a plush robe and face mask. After all, why not have good skin along with sweet treats! For the boys of the house, throw on some old jeans, plaid shirt and grab your dad’s tool belt to make a simple construction worker costume. Just watch out if your little man is handy, they may get job offers. Whether looking to save money or create fun activities for the entire family, the DIY Halloween costume is a great way to have a truly spooktacular time! n

Love!

Adoption is

The Adoption Renaissance: How Adoption has Changed In prior generations, decisions were made for expecting moms choosing adoption. Now, birthmothers are the decision makers guiding the adoption plan. They decide with whom they place their baby and what they want for openness both before birth and after delivery. Heart2Heart Adoptions is a practice area of Hughes Law Office in Sioux Falls. They describe their practice as being birthmother centric and believe it’s important for each birthmother to feel comfortable with the family she chooses to parent her baby. Each family Heart2Heart Adoptions works with has gone through a rigorous qualification process to make sure they are loving, safe, and qualified to give the baby the very best home and family. We want to introduce you to some of these families seeking to adopt a child and give them a loving forever home. 1. We are Chad and Chelsea, and we were born and raised in rural South Dakota. We both achieved undergraduate and master’s degrees and have been married for six years. We are looking forward to expanding our family through the miracle of adoption! We hope to offer our children a life filled with unconditional love, stability, and happiness. We will raise them with the values we learned growing up in the Midwest. We want to build a sense of adventure within their life by sharing our love of travel. We know that it takes a village to raise a child, and we have a large, close family that will support us through this journey! 2. We are David and Nancy, and we are a loving family of five, solely due to the gift of adoption. Having adopted all three of our children, our lives have been blessed to witness the pure selflessness it takes for a woman to make an adoption plan for her child. Because of the courage and strength of our children’s birth mothers, we are parents. Our children are not biologically related, but they are siblings to the core, and nothing is more beautiful to us. We have always desired a large family and are excited for our children to witness their sibling come home. We have waited over two years for our next baby, and although it is not easy, we continue to wait with great anticipation and hope!

1

3. We are Alex, Emily, and Sophia, and our family was brought together by the beautiful gift of adoption! Starting our family on our own wasn’t easy, but once we started our adoption journey, we were at peace and every little thing fell into place. We were on the journey we were meant for, and we are on that journey again to hopefully expand our family. Alex works for his family business, & Emily is a respiratory therapist. Our little family loves to be outdoors, spend weekends at the family lake cabin, and explore and travel the world! We have so much love, laughter, and stability to share and cannot wait to see what path God leads us down. 4. We are Kristen and Dave! Our dream of parenthood became a reality when our daughter, Ella, became part of our family through the beautiful gift of adoption. Our greatest desire is to expand our family through adoption, to provide Ella with a brother or sister and another child for us to love unconditionally. We both come from very close-knit families, and family togetherness is something we value most of all. We have an enormous amount of love to give a child and intend to provide all of the tools necessary to help our children realize their dreams and potential. Parenthood is the most challenging, yet rewarding job that we have been blessed with, and we are anxiously awaiting this blessing once again! 5. We are Ryan & Kellie, and we couldn’t be more excited to become parents! Adoption is definitely what we are called for, and we would be so happy to talk with you about anything! Ryan is an associate medical device sales representative, and he loves volleyball, fishing, running, and being active in the church. Kellie is a surgical Registered Nurse, and she loves being active in the church serving in the nursery, camping, and being in the outdoors! We have been praying to have a child for so long because we have so much love to give and provide. It is our promise that we show the child the love and comfort that he or she deserves and to make sure they grow up in a caring household!

6. We are Jonathan and Kannan, and we live in the beautiful Black Hills! Jonathan works for a group of radio stations, and Kannan is a mortgage banker. We imagine the meaning of a family is to help show the world more unconditional love, and we want to be the Mom and Dad of littles who know no other normal than being loved and accepted for free—no matter what! We’ve been pursuing adoption since 2015 and our hope is to raise children that are confident and independent, who respect others and reach out with love and authentically connect with the world. As parents, our mission is to help build a world for our kids so they can imagine whatever they want to. 7. We are Greg and Molly! We were both born and raised in South Dakota and own our own farm and ranch. We raise livestock and a variety of crops. Together, we enjoy camping, fishing, grilling, going on adventures with our two dogs (Charlee & Bowie), and traveling around the Midwest. We are extremely close to our family and friends, and they provide us with so much love and support. Greg enjoys playing softball, baseball and golf, and he proudly serves on our local Volunteer Fire Department. Molly enjoys gardening and flowers, animals, reading, and nature photography. We are beyond blessed to have each other on this journey called life. We cannot wait for the joys of parenthood!

is a carpenter, volunteer fireman, and a member of the SD Army National Guard. Amy would describe him as hardworking, always volunteering to help, and the fun uncle at all the family gatherings. Amy is a kind compassionate registered nurse at our local hospital. Joe describes her as having a beautiful heart, joyous, optimistic, and always ready for new adventures. We enjoy living the small-town life, hunting, spending time outdoors, attending sporting events and family functions. We can’t wait to add a baby to the mix! 10. We are Jim and Jess, and we are so excited to begin this next stage in our lives! We cannot wait to share all the love we have in our hearts with a child. We believe that adoption is the ultimate gift of love and selflessness. We promise to make sure your child knows where they have come from and the journey that brought them to us. Jim works for his family’s business, and Jess is a nurse. Our extended family and friends may be just as excited to add another child to the mix and are there to provide unconditional love and support along the way. Mostly we hope to provide a future that is brighter than the stars. We hope that you are able to catch a glimpse of just how excited we are to begin this next chapter!

8. We are Kyle & Becky, and we can’t wait to grow our family through adoption! We love to have fun together as a family, and our hearts are full of love! We can offer unconditional love and security plus vibrant, fun, and lively opportunities. We live in a family friendly town and enjoy spending time at our family farm. There’s a lot of laughter in our home and even more love. Becky is a teacher and loves mentoring kids and young adults. Kyle is a farmer and a musician; he often serenades us with live music. Our son is practicing for his promotion to big brother by hugging his stuffed animals and tucking them into bed with kisses and a prayer.

11. We are Ryan and Whitney, and we, along with our two wonderful kids, have been praying for you as you consider this important choice. Our days are filled with school, sports, lots of story-time, friends and family, and lots of love. We love to travel, and our greatest adventure was an incredible trip for the birth of our daughter, who joined our family through the blessing of adoption. Our prayer is for our children to be good friends, be kind and respectful, understand the importance of forgiveness and the joy of helping others. Our promise to you is that we will always make sure your child knows how very much he or she is loved. By you. And by us. Always.

9. We are Joe & Amy, a loving small-town couple that has been married for eight years. We have been building a joyous faith filled home and all that is missing is a precious child. Joe

Carving Out Time for Your Relationship How Couples can Bond Over Carving Pumpkins By Chellee Unruh

T

he seasons are changing, the wind is getting cooler, and the opportunities for fun outdoor activities with your spouse are dwindling. On the contrary the holiday season is gearing up with Halloween being the first on the list. So bring the festivities indoors after the weather turns cold and get in the mood for the holidays by carving a pumpkin. Here are ten reasons why you should carve out this time for your relationship.

1. Carving out the inside takes time, so use the time to have a meaningful conversation with your spouse while you scoop out the innards. Keep the conversation light and don’t get too serious. Having a heated debate while using sharp objects to carve a pumpkin is not recommended. 2. It’s seasonal, so seize the moment. Building your own traditions around the holidays is part of building your 16

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

life together so why not add annual pumpkin carving to that list. It is a tradition that you will be able to continue whether your family grows or it remains just the two of you. 3. Have a carving competition. If you are the type of couple that enjoys a little competition then this will be perfect activity for the two of you. See who can make the scariest one and have your friends and family vote for the winner. You get to decide what the winning prize will be, will it be bragging rights, chores, or something else? 4. A break from the routine. Your typical night probably consists of coming home from work, eating dinner and then sitting down to binge the latest series on your streaming device or favorite show on cable TV. Pumpkin carving is a great way to break the routine

peach

and disconnect from the digital world and connect with your spouse.

check us out.

5. It’s fun and festive. Being an adult doesn’t mean that you can’t partake in activities that are normally reserved for kids. Have fun with your spouse, be goofy with each other and let the responsibilities of life melt away like the candle inside your perfectly carved pumpkin.

THE CLOTHES ARE SOFT AND LUXURIOUS AND MAKE YOU FEEL GREAT! Not to mention...you will love the price! To purchase, contact me or visit my website: Shawntell Kroese | 402.980.3266 discoverpeach.com/s/shawntellk

6. Waste not want not. If you are the kind of couple that doesn’t like to see things go to waste, then keep the goods you carved out and bake them into a desert item or use them as fertilizer for your fall garden. Either way you can put the waste to use.

WHAT MAKES

7. Pose with your pumpkin. Some couples love to share all aspects of their life on social media and some like to keep it more private – no matter which couple you are, your carved pumpkins can make for a great photo opportunity. You will also be able to look back and see how your pumpkin carving skills as a couple has evolved over the years.

YOUR HOME HOME?

8. It will put you in the spooky spirit. There is nothing more Halloween than carving pumpkins so use this time to make your plans for what you will do on Halloween, such as getting dressed up in costume to go out or staying at home to watch a scary movie and pass out candy to the trick-or-treaters. 9. Turn it into a date. To really get in some quality time with your spouse, turn it into an all day outing. Source your pumpkin from a local market or pumpkin patch, maybe catch a hay ride while you are there, grab a lite lunch and discuss your theme for carving your pumpkins, then take your pumpkins home and begin working on your masterpieces. 10. Illuminate more than just the pumpkin. When you are done carving the pumpkins, put a tea light in them (real or fake) and use that light to set the ambiance for a romantic dinner for two. So during this Halloween season, carve out time for your relationship while you carve some pumpkins. Nothing says home more than a well-lit jack-o’-lantern on your front porch. n

It’s a feeling of warmth and safety. Of belonging. Where everyday moments become the sweetest memories. At Security National Bank, our experienced lenders put thoughtful care and attention into helping you find your place. Not just any place—but your home. Because at the end of the day, we understand home matters.

Innovation Expo 2020 Sparking Interest and Opportunities for Startups and Small Businesses By Margaret Pennock | Photos courtesy of Innovation Expo

A

n opportunity to make a business match made in heaven has been scheduled for area small business owners, startups and investors on October 22nd. The event, Innovation Expo, is hosted by The Enterprise Institute, a non-profit organization that sets up angel investment funds in South Dakota and Startup Sioux Falls, a community organization that aims to connect startup founders to one another and to the startup ecosystem in Sioux Falls. For aspiring entrepreneurs or investors, this event is an excellent opportunity to network and learn from established business owners, find potential mentors and to meet venture capitalists that are interested in investing in startup businesses. According to Matt Paulson, event organizer and Founder of Startup Sioux Falls, “Innovation Expo is unique because it is the only local event geared toward high-growth businesses that are looking to raise venture capital from investors. It is also a regional event, so there are opportunities to meet business owners and investors from other communities that you likely would not meet at local networking events.”

18

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

The Innovation Expo is an annual conference that aims to connect entrepreneurs, innovators, angel investors, venture capitalists and other professionals who are involved with developing startup companies. Reminiscent of Shark Tank, the event consists of speakers, breakout sessions, investor pitches and networking focused on the entrepreneurial community. Matt shares, “The great thing about entrepreneurship is that you don’t have to fit anyone’s mold or preconceived expectations to be successful. You just have to build a product or service that solves a problem for somebody else. I am particularly proud that Innovation Expo actively recruits women and minority entrepreneurs to speak each year. We’ve had several successful female business owners speak in the past, such as Melissa Johnson (Oh My Cupcakes), Addie Graham Kramer (The Event Company), and Karla Santi (Blend Interactive). These women have set a great example of success for the rest of us. This year we have the privilege of hearing from two women entrepreneurs, including Sherry Walling from ZenFounder and Abhinaya Konduru from m25 Ventures.”

flat iron curls

Story & modeled by Jessalyn Holsing Hair by Taura Lathem Photography by Red Swordfish Studios

Fall H

is here!

ave you wanted loose, relaxed curls, gone in with your curling iron with as big of a barrel as possible, and come away with the wrong look? Then you’ve definitely noticed that something is different, and that’s the not-so-new but newly trendy method of curling your hair with a flat iron! Loose and relaxed and giving you more control over your curls, using a flat iron is the perfect way to get that breezy model look. To begin, make sure your flat iron is the correct type in that both plates on either side heat up. Most flat irons are made this way, but there are a few out there and a few older ones that only have one side that heats up, so don’t make the mistake of trying this with the wrong type. Then, make sure you’re sectioning your hair. The base of your neck and the crown of your head are two great places to start so that you get the bottom, middle, and top of your hair perfectly. Additionally, you may want to section out your bangs separately to afford yourself the most control over your curls. Pro tip: Use a heat treatment first! You can buy various brands of heat-treating spray from your local beauty store.

5009 S. Western Ave. • Sioux Falls • (605) 335-9878

Look Fabulous this Fall!

Hold your flat iron as vertically as possible, clamp it on the strand of hair you’re starting with, and gently rotate it. If you’re starting with the strand closest to your face, rotate it away from your face. For a loose look, alternate which way you twist your flat iron each time. After it’s rotated, slowly pull the flat iron away from your face—still held vertically—until the strand is finished. Continue around the head and move up each layer of hair until finished. Leave the curls as-is after they exit the plates until your whole head is finished and cooled down, then use your fingers to gently comb through your hair to loosen up the curls and get that free, breezy look. Voila! It’s as simple as that. It may take some time and practice, as the hold on the iron is strange at first. Remember, the smaller the section you grab, the curlier the hair will be, so for the loosest curls use larger sections of hair. Soon, you’ll be curling like a pro! n

Women say, “It is the best thing I ever did for myself!”

Find Your Shade

By Jessalyn Holsing | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

W

e love bold! The year 2020 has been all about monochrome, bouge, bold statements, and now we’re ready to dive into the final leg of this year headfirst into the boldest color on the spectrum: Red! Turning heads and standing out, we aim to make a statement in the most brashly beautiful way possible. The only problem is that red—albeit gorgeous—is a tough match. If you’ve ever delved into the world of red lipstick, you’ve experienced a similar problem of how to match that classic Hollywood red-lip look to, well, yourself. It certainly isn’t easy, but we’re going to take a look at your options to make sure you can find your perfect shade of red and rock it. To begin, we need to look at your skin tone. If you have a warmer skin tone, you have yellow/orange/golden undertones. You probably look good in bright colors and tan easily. Look for bright reds, like the color of a crisp apple, orange-reds, and even coral shades will work fantastically for you! For cool skin tones, you usually have pink, red, or bluish undertones and when you tan you burn easily. Think bluered, like a nice dark wine color, burgundy, or maroon—very deep colors and very classy. Finally, neutral skin tones are hard to discern, as they’re a kind of in-between mix. Neutral skin tones tend to burn before they tan, and your veins probably look greenish-blue and have sparked discussion amongst friends. If this is you, you’re lucky! Nearly anything goes, from candy-apple red to deep burgundy, including the addition of dustier blush-tones. Additionally, you may run into trouble if you’re a red-head, but don’t fret! Match the undertones of your hair in a similar manner, and you should be set. Go forth the rest of this year bold, beautiful, and making the brave statement: That you, my friend, are red hot! n

Lighting Story and photos by Lisa Marie Blair

F

or almost everyone, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Therefore, much consideration should be taken when picking out lighting for this busy space. According to Nancy Iverson, Lighting Consultant at Mahlander’s Appliance and Lighting, “Having a well-lit kitchen is vital to having a comfortable and productive workspace. It’s where lighting is most important in your home. There are different layers of light. Ambient, which is your general lighting, such as recessed. Task is your under-cabinet, over sink and island. Decorative and accent lighting could be the toe kick, over cabinet, wall lights and lamps. Having all of these layers will help you achieve the ultimate lighting plan for your kitchen. Always take into consideration what materials you are using, especially if you have a cooktop on your island, adding that smoke, grease and grime should be considered.” Once you have established the overall function needed for your kitchen lighting, it’s time to choose your design style. It’s so easy to change the look of your kitchen dramatically with all the different styles of lighting available. Lights are easy to change out and it’s a fun area to be trendy in. Modern globe lights are great if you’re looking to create a mid-century modern home feel. Rattan and wicker lights give a home a relaxed feel while embracing tropical vibes. Lights with clean lines and washed woods are a great way to embrace the clean Scandinavian style. Farmhouse style lighting uses a lot of wood and black metal. Going for the gold in lights will definitely bring that modern feel. Clear glass light fixtures will stand the test of time for a traditional home. Pulley lights, metal pendants, and exposed cable lights pull off an industrial style. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles. It’ll look great as long as there are some cohesive features to bring it all together.

38

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

Nancy’s Lighting Tips for the Island “Since the island is often the hub of the kitchen, it needs to be well lit. How many pendants does an island need? It depends on what size and what other lighting is in the space. Your island lighting is going to depend on several factors. If your recessed lighting is done correctly—approximately every four feet—then you should have adequate lighting. If it’s used primarily for prep work, you need adequate lighting for chopping, dicing, measuring, etc. If it’s used primarily for eating and gathering, you may not need as much light. It’s really a personal preference. If your kitchen is lit properly, then you can have a little more fun. You can do something more decorative over your island. If your ceiling level is higher, you will want to hang them higher,” Iverson says. n

ears after moving out of the Sioux Falls area, Lynnette and Justin Ingalls realized their love for the “big, little Midwestern city” was drawing them back. Once the couple decided they were officially going to make the move, finding the right home and selling their existing home was next on the agenda. “We knew we wanted something on the east side but after looking at a few houses, we just weren’t finding what we were looking for,” explains Lynnette. Thankfully, Jeff Nelson, Broker Associate for 605 Real Estate, used his 41 years of experience to take a chance and suggest an option the couple hadn’t considered. “He told us about these twin homes that were being built by Blair Masonry Homes that were located on the east side of town in the Pine Lake Hills area,” says Lynnette. Right away, the couple fell in love. But the house they were looking at was already sold. “So, we decided to build.” Teaming up with a local builder who specializes in high-end custom twin homes, the Ingalls knew they were on the right path. “We not only loved the home but the location with the beautiful rolling hills made it a perfect choice.” With “custom” being a specialty for Lisa Blair, co-owner of Blair Masonry Homes, she went to work customizing a dream home for the couple. “We never built before and enjoyed the flexibility,” adds Lynnette. But sometimes flexibility can mean making stressful decisions. Thankfully, Lisa Blair, a talented designer with her own trademark style, was on hand to help guide. And for Lynnette, who took on many of the initial decision-making responsibilities, it was quite helpful. And where the construction elements and details left off, Kayla Hathaway, design consultant for Montogomery’s Furniture and Design, seamlessly took over to create a one-of-a-kind creation. “I met Lynnette and Justin Ingalls in the store and we immediately had a connection,” adds Kayla. She used her extensive experience working with clients on large-scale design projects by giving them a simple tour of the showroom. “Lynnette and Justin didn’t have a specific design style in mind,” she adds. “It’s my job to pick up cues and work with existing pieces.” With a multitude of uses, it was the conversation room’s grand fireplace that became an instant focal point that anchored the open kitchen, dining and living areas. With its warm and rugged stone surround and simple mantle, the tones of the natural elements were carried through in the furniture and accent pieces. “I really love how this space turned out,” says Kayla. “It was fun to pick out the upholstery for this area because we could incorporate mixed tones of leather.” Creamy leather upholstery curves around the quaint

area while an area rug with tones of gold, cream and grey provides an anchor atop the distressed grey laminate flooring that extends throughout the home. First impressions are everything, especially when walking into a custom home. Kayla made sure the Ingalls home was no exception. When entering the front door, the eye is immediately drawn into the conversation room with a fireplace and continues through pocket doors to the oversized master bedroom with a statement wall. But pulling these elements together was no easy task. “I was able to obtain floor plans from the builder so I could lay out their furniture choices to ensure adequate flow, space and detail,” adds Kayla. And because interior finishes were already selected, Kayla made sure their new pieces would coordinate with the wood floors and the metallic finishes would complement the plethora of unique light fixtures.

The sprawling main floor flows into the kitchen and casual dining space. Light colored walls and oversized windows allow natural sunlight to fill the main level. Dual globe pendants in white and black with brushed gold accents lead the eye to the large island. “Lisa exposed us to the concept of “bar height” and we immediately decided to fully customize the island with both scale and materials,” adds Lynnette. Dark black granite countertops from T & T Granite & Quartz extend throughout and feature a leather finish. “We liked how they added a subtle design element,” adds Lynnette. The custom cabinets from Sioux Falls Kitchen and Bath lent a warm and cozy feel with a rich nutmeg stain that matches the trim and doors. “We wanted a home that looked lived in,” adds Lynnette. A trademark of Lisa Blair, the stove area is best described as trend-setting simplicity with floating wood shelves, solid white marble backsplash, custom range hood and illumination with black swag lamps. “We initially were going to use white subway tile for the backsplash but we really like the idea of one solid slab of stone after seeing it on the tour of homes,” she adds. “So, we decided to make a change.”

An expansive walk-in pantry is complete with open shelves and ample countertop space for kitchen appliances. “I love that my kitchen countertops can be open,” she adds. “And I also love to buy in bulk so the added storage is a bonus.” For the kitchen, Lynnette continued to remain understated and worked with Kayla extensively on placing accent pieces above the cupboards. “They specifically wanted open spaces between the pieces,” she adds. “We definitely don’t want the accessories to take away from the design, just enhance and complement.”

A charming dining area, softened with lush houseplants, leads to a special “heirloom room” where both Lynnette and Justin can pay homage to their heritage and hobbies. Sliding white French barn doors with black hardware greet the space filled with family treasures and antique furniture. “These chairs are over 100 years old,” adds Lynnette. An oversized master bedroom displays another trademark design with a black statement wall. The master bathroom lends simplistic beauty with elongated neutral ceramic tile, dual custom cabinets and sinks and coordinating black countertops. For eclecticism, wrought iron framed mirrors and industrial-style sconces are the perfect finishing touches. Despite building countless twin homes, having a layout that included a finished lower level was a first for the new development. A wrought iron lateral railing leads downstairs to a spacious area complete with a wet bar. “This is one of my favorites,” adds Lynnette as she turns on the pendant light above the sink. An oversized Edison lightbulb is encased in a black wrought iron frame making it the perfect addition to illuminate the marble backsplash and custom cabinets.

An additional set of barn doors lead to an open area that is filled with recreational items, a passion for Lynnette who is a certified yoga instructor. After months of getting settled into their new dwelling, Lynnette is enjoying spending her time working with Kayla to find the perfect accessories to finish off their custom creation. “We are just thrilled with the choices we made and how they really complement the style of the home,” adds Lynnette. “It makes it all come together as one perfected package.” n

DIY Antler Candle Holder Story & photos by Emily Olson

MATERIALS: • antler (natural or resin) • ¾” copper plumbing cap • E6000 adhesive • flat head screw • drill with bit sized to fit flathead screw • taper candle • adhesive wax to stabilize candle

A

ntlers have become a staple in décor of all types, ranging from minimalism to modern farmhouse. They can add extra appeal as candle holders when combined with the utility of something as simple as a plumbing cap. The traditional copper tone of plumbing fittings is a perfect match for the popular “rose gold” color trend. Whether standing alone or styled with other antlers and seasonal items, they make a statement as a centerpiece, on an end table, or above a mantle. DIRECTIONS: 1. Find the level point of the antler where it balances flat on the table top. 2. Decide the point on the antler where the candle will be positioned. 3. Apply E6000 adhesive to the bottom of the copper cap and adhere it to the desired point(s) on the antler. Hold cap in place for a moment to ensure it remains straight as it dries. 4. After the adhesive has cured, drill into the center of the copper cap and into the antler. Start with a smaller drill bit and work up to accommodate gauge of the screw. Be careful to drill just deep enough for the length of the screw and not through the entire antler. 5. I nsert screw and tighten to secure the cap to the antler. 6. Apply adhesive wax around the base of the candle so that is fits snuggly inside the copper cap. n

Advancing Breast Health By Sanford Health

T

he Edith Sanford Breast Specialty Clinic is expanding services to give women at all stages of breast health enhanced care.

These expansions in care include same-day imaging services for patients who need further diagnostic exams and direct connections to specialists for women with a higher risk for developing breast cancer. “A woman can come here for any breast-related concerns she may have,” said Colleen Schmidt, a nurse practitioner and breast health specialist. “If she’s worried about getting breast cancer, we can work through that with her.” Same Day Answers Meeting with a genetic counselor is often the first step for patients at the specialty clinic. By taking an in-depth look at family history, a counselor can calculate a patient’s lifetime risk of getting breast cancer. If that assessment score is higher than 20%, Schmidt equips patients with prevention strategies, such as lifestyle changes, and teaches them how to do a self-breast exam to watch for symptoms. As a certified MammaCare Clinical Breast Examiner, Schmidt is specially trained to identify lumps or tissue thickening, which, if found, could lead to imaging recommendations for an ultrasound or mammogram that same day. “We want to start doing same day imaging because we know that they’re feeling anxious and peace of mind is everything,” Schmidt said.

High Risk, Full Circle Care For patients with a significantly higher risk of breast cancer, the specialty clinic helps them make decisions that fit their needs – bringing breast care full circle in one place. There are experts and resources available to any woman feeling concerned. “I can’t emphasize enough that you can selfrefer to our clinic if you’re worried about something or worried about your lifetime risk,” said Schmidt. Furthering Cancer Survivorship Enhancing breast care for all patients also means being a source of support for when breast cancer is detected and requires extensive treatment. “We know that every woman handles the emotional and physical recovery of breast cancer differently,” said Schmidt. When patients begin their journey, they meet with providers to create a personalized survivorship care plan, learn about additional resources and get connected with other supportive services like the intimacy clinic and physical therapists.

‘Never Ignore Anything’ Schmidt’s journey treating a variety of breast conditions began after she joined the Sanford Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic team as a nurse practitioner in 2014. There, she saw a lot of patients needing breast cancer surgery who were high-risk for developing the disease from an inherited gene mutation.

GREAT RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY IN OUR SIOUX FALLS LOCATION!

“Those patients were wonderful and I just kind of gravitated toward them in the breast health area,” she said. She joined the specialty clinic team earlier this year with a goal focused on three things: to help women feel informed, empowered and at ease. To that end, she always gives her patients this advice. “You should be proactive about your breast health, never ignore anything and listen to your body,” Schmidt said. n

Inspire Medical Device for Sleep Apnea No Mask, No Hose, Just Sleep. Surgically-Implanted Sleep Apnea Device Becomes Newest Alternative Treatment for Sufferers of Sleep Apnea By Virginia Olson

E

very night millions of Americans go to bed and drift into an evening of sleep that is anything but restful. They snore, gasp for air and their breathing slows or stops throughout the night, affecting oxygen levels. The condition - known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – afflicts about 9 percent of women and 24 percent of men, most of them middle-aged according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Those with OSA suffer night after night and jeopardize their health says Kenneth Scott, a doctor at Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat, who is also board certified in Sleep Medicine. “Not only does sleep apnea cause chronic sleeplessness, it also increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and even sudden death,” he says. Dr. Scott explains there are three ways to address OSA – a custom dental appliance, a CPAP, and now surgery.

56

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

CUSTOMIZED FOR YOU Convenient options for all patients.

“The mainline therapies chronic sleep apnea sufferers have often turned to have been a custom dental implant or a nighttime device called a CPAP, for continuous positive airway pressure. The machine provides constant positive pressure when the sleeper breathes in and out. It requires a mask that must be properly applied to form a tight seal around the nose and mouth and is the most common method of addressing sleep apnea.” Though the CPAP and dental appliances offer some relief, says Dr. Scott, a new treatment option involves a minimally invasive surgical procedure using a medically implanted device, eliminating the need for a mask and hose connection.

Super Thursday is the second Thursday of each month and offers 20% off OTC items. • Testing - Hormones for men and women, cortisol, cycle mapping, food sensitivity, micronutrient testing, neurotransmitters and Covid Antibody testing. • Consultations available upon request.

“The device looks similar to a Pacemaker and is implanted in the patient. The patient uses a remote control to turn it on at night, so it can deliver mild stimulation to airway muscles during sleep,” says Dr. Scott.

2333 W 57th St, Ste 109 | Sioux Falls 605.334.1672 | rxpsi.com Hours: Mon – Fri 8:30am – 5:30pm

The procedure takes about two-three hours and most patients go home the same day, he says. Inspire, a Plymouth, MN medical device company, developed the FDA-approved airway stimulation treatment which moves the tongue forward and keeps the airway open at night. Dr. Scott sees the surgical alternative as effective. Besides eliminating the evening hassle of attaching a CPAP mask and hose, patients are experiencing more restful sleep. “A lot of patients can’t tolerate their CPAP and have chosen a surgical approach to their sleep apnea. Over ninety percent have been satisfied with their results,” he says, “and the severity of apneic events tends to be decreased by 80%.” It’s all about getting a good night’s rest, says Dr. Scott. “We all sleep,” he says. “It is very important to have the best quality of sleep we can as sleep affects so many areas of our lives.” n

Eight Health Insurance Tips that Can Save You Money By Avera Health

H

ealth insurance is something we don’t typically think about unless we’re shopping for it or getting a bill in the mail.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take that can help you save money on your health care expenses, aside from choosing an affordable health insurance provider. Knowing how your health insurance plan works will help save you money in the long run. “Get to know your health insurance policy. By making use of free preventive services and understanding your network, you can reduce your health care costs and even experience better health,” said Jordan Anderson, Vice President of Sales and Account Management at Avera Health Plans. Anderson shared eight tips for making the most of your health insurance: 1. Understand which providers are in your network. If you visit a certain facility or provider, will your health insurance cover it? It’s a question you should ask before seeking non-emergency medical attention. Out-of-network care can lead to higher out-of-pocket costs since your insurance plan only covers certain providers and facilities. 2. Know when to use acute, urgent or emergency care. Going to the ER will cost you more than going to urgent care. According to the Health Care Cost Institute, on average, an emergency room visit costs $1,389, while urgent care averages only $155. Go to your regular clinic when minor injuries or illnesses occur during office hours. After hours, think about whether or not it can wait until the next morning. Urgent care can handle issues that require immediate attention such as minor cuts and burns, sprains and broken bones, or respiratory issues. Critical issues such as chest pain, stroke symptoms, head injuries, trouble breathing or dangerously high fever warrant a trip to the emergency room.

3. Read your summary of benefits and coverage (SBC). You pay a health insurance premium every month—so what are you getting for it? Your SBC can tell you. It’s a document that outlines the benefits and coverage of your health insurance plan. Contact your health insurance company if you have questions about what kinds of services are covered.

LET US BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME! Our beautiful twin homes are known for their high-end finishes and are built to last!

4. Make use of preventive services. Many health insurance plans are required to cover certain services, even if you haven’t reached your deductible for the year. Certain tests and shots can save your life and might not cost you a dime. Contact your health insurance company if you have questions about what preventive services are covered for you.

• Optional snow removal and lawn care maintenance

5. Check to see what kind of online access and resources your plan provides. You should learn if your health plan has an online portal that allows you to pay your bills, read your SBC or find important information on benefits, like what is covered for pharmacy. 6. Verify what kind of emergency transport is covered. Not all trips to the doctor are planned. Sometimes an emergency arises, and it might be serious enough to require fast transport to the nearest hospital. An emergency air transport membership—like those offered by Avera Careflight for just $49—can save you thousands in medical bills in the event you are flown to the ER.

• Located in the Mystic Creek Development • In business since 1993 blairmasonryhomes.com 605.214.1001

KEEPING LOVED ONES AT HOME WHERE THEY CAN BE VISITED BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

7. Check the cost of your prescriptions. Can you get a generic instead of a brand name drug? An Association for Accessible Medicines study found that the average patient co-pay for a generic prescription is just over $5.50. You will likely face a higher co-pay for brand medications, so talk to your medical care provider about which option is best for you. 8. Check on coverage for out-of-area dependents. Do you or your dependents live outside your network area? For example, do you have a college student on your plan? Your insurance plan may offer out-ofarea coverage that will give you and your dependents continuous in-network benefit coverage for certain services, even if you’re outside your in-network area. The Art to Health One Woman Using Art and Health to Inspire Change By Chellee Unruh Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

I

t is a sad reality that every minute in the United States, 20 people are abused by someone they love and trust. Unfortunately time alone can’t heal the wound of an abusive childhood. Most adults cope with an abusive childhood by putting on a front and filling their life with responsibility. Despite their best efforts to suppress it, the haunts of the abusive past linger, waiting for the right moment to surface. This can make it difficult to maintain a positive self-image, form friendships and build trust with others. While it may seem that there is no way to escape the trauma of one’s past, there is hope of taking control of your life and overcoming the effects of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Haley Hoffer is living proof that a troubled past does not have to define your future. Haley is re-writing her story from being a victim of domestic violence to a champion at overcoming adversity. She is using her story of personal growth to inspire others to do the same through her personal training business, H-Art and Health LLC. Haley’s journey began in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she grew up in a povertystricken home. She was raised by a single mom in an unstable environment. Not being allowed to have a relationship with her dad, the instability at home ultimately led to Haley being declared homeless by the state of Michigan at the age of 17 as a way to start the process of being emancipated from her parents. At the time she was working two full time jobs, while going to school and being active in rugby. “I went to live with a client I was training while I was working at Fitzone for Women. I had the opportunity to live with my dad when I made the decision to leave my home, but I felt being on my own was the best option for me.”

62

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2020

Even though the process to get emancipated had started she opted not to continue with the emancipation. “I was stable and doing fine and didn’t want to put myself through that additional stress. Plus I didn’t know anything about the court system so I figured as long as I am doing fine, there was no need to go through the process.” After high school Haley interned at Kids Food Basket and waitressed at Big Boy while going to college full time for exercise science. She later enlisted in the Army as a medic stationed out of Fort Benning, Georgia. Most of the four years she spent in the military she was stationed at Fort Benning. After suffering a heat stroke that later led to heart problems and also enduring military sexual trauma, Haley was medically released from the military. It was during her time in the military that she met her now ex-husband and had her son Andrew. Being estranged from his mother, Haley’s husband wanted to be closer to his dad’s side of the family so they moved from Fort Benning to Sioux Falls to raise their son. Their marriage had its ups and downs and ultimately led to a divorce and Haley becoming a permanent resident of Sioux Falls for the foreseeable future. Not one to ever let her past define her future, Haley is forging a positive way forward through strength training and fitness. She launched a personal training business built off her success as a sponsored athlete in powerlifting. With Complete Nutrition® and Renaissance Periodization as her sponsors, Haley competes in powerlifting meets and has several first place wins in South Dakota, and a second place in Des Moines, Iowa. She also competes in the strong man competitions and has brought home first and second place awards. “Fitness has always been a big part of my life. I used it as a way to connect and build a relationship with my dad. Training and lifting has helped me overcome a lot of adversities. Now my purpose in life is to use my talent and abilities to help other people discover their ‘why.’” Haley operates her personal training business out of Sharps Gym on 12th and Kiwanis. Clients that train with Haley get a lot more than just the stereotypical personal training provided at most gyms. Her style of training is more of a coaching service. “If the client wants me too, I will work out right alongside them, pushing and inspiring them to work harder because we do the workout together. Working out with them also allows me to demonstrate for them the proper form while doing the exercise.” Her coaching goes beyond just the physical, “I like to teach my clients how to build neural connections to their muscles by giving them a deeper understanding of how their body works and how their mind plays into their success in and outside of the gym.” So in addition to the time spent with her clients in the gym, Haley also runs several motivational groups for free on social media to provide guidance and resources for the mind, body and spirit. She uses this platform to help clients break the cycle of going through the motions of daily life and brings awareness to ways they can make changes that will ultimately lead to reaching their long term goals.

She does package deals for her personal training that includes time spent in the gym, education, motivation and accountability. “I learned from the military that if someone is down you should go help. It should always be that way. This is why I go above and beyond for my clients in any way that I can by giving them my authentic self and leading by example. I think this is why I have been able to maintain a strong group of regular clients because they know they can depend on me.” Because of the dark places she has been, she wants to help other people escape those mindsets like she was able to. Haley teaches her clients that being able to be vulnerable helps you build your strength and is not a sign of weakness. Aside from the fitness aspect of her life, Haley is also an accomplished artist working with several mediums including drawing, sculpting and mosaic work. When she is not training in the gym she can be found creating a work of art from a t-shirt design to a custom art piece. She is currently a student at Augustana College working towards her Bachelor of Fine

Arts degree to further refine her artistic skills. Her ultimate goal would be to figure out how to blend her two passions in life fitness and art together. “I would say that I am in a discovery phase of my life. I am trying to figure out how to take all of my strengths and channel them into a career that will help others and give me the opportunity to give back to my community in charitable ways.” Haley is looking to build off all of her successes she has had in life and the wisdom she has gained to start the next chapter of her life. “Whatever that ends up looking like, I know it will be focused around helping people because that is what drives me.” She is also very proud that she is able to be a positive role model for her son and give him a life that looks a lot different than the one that she grew up in. Learning How to Connect with Yourself and Just Be Autumn Neuman’s Yoga Lifestyle Encourages and Ignites an Inner Soul Fire Story & photos by Margaret Pennock

H

aving an easy balance within her mind and body has been quite the journey for Autumn Neuman and like so many others, her path hasn’t always been an easy one. Today as a successful human resource manager and mother of two beautiful young women; it’s hard to believe she was a teenage mom struggling to raise two babies on her own. But over many challenging years, Autumn dug in and kept food on the table, loved her girls and even put herself through college to beat the odds that seemed against her. Today she is an empty nester as well as a proud grandmother and has embraced a yoga lifestyle to bring herself the peace and balance she craves. Autumn shares, “I wish I was on my mat almost 100% of the time because it’s like a magic carpet ride or like reading a good book. Yoga completely takes you in and you become the person you were always meant to be. Outside of the chaos, outside of the noise, the titles, the demands of everyday life.” She has used her love for yoga to drive her from taking classes to evolving her life around its principles. And because of how it’s affected her life deeply, she now leads others in the experience, guiding them in the ancient art of body and mind awareness and healing with Shakti Fire Yoga at Revolution Yoga & Cycle as well as pop up events.

She shares, “I just want people to connect. First and foremost to connect with themselves, their breath, their body, their truth. To be present, right here, right now. I want people to connect with each other, to share energy, experiences and wisdom. I want people to let go of control, let go of all the worldly expectations. To be free to break out of their programmed lifestyle, out of their expectations and to FEEL better.” “To break free from the programmed lifestyle. It doesn’t matter how we look; it matters how we FEEL.”

And at a time that has created unprecedented stress, fear and uncertainty for so many, yoga just may be the silver bullet to bring things back into perspective for us all. Autumn notes, “For just 60 minutes, you’re not running or performing, you get to shut off the world and be so present with yourself, your breath, your truth. You feel a sense of grounding, security, balance, peace and strength. When there’s no need to control, no need to protect, nothing to fix, nothing to prove, you get to just be you and no one could do it better.” She shares, “I want you to know yourself better, I want you to learn to trust and listen to your body. I want you to celebrate every single inch of your body and relish in the energy that we co-create and take it off your mat and share it with every single person you come in contact with.” Learn more about the power of yoga on Autumn’s site at shaktifireyogabyautumn. ppcbrands.com. n

What's New: Maskcara With Jen Sculpt, Enhance and Add Glowing Highlights to Your Natural Beauty By Margaret Pennock | Photos by Katie Swatek

F

or Jen Eimers, discovering beauty products that made her feel gorgeous was amazing. Having the opportunity to share those beauty products is a dream come true. According to Jen, “I have used the products since June of 2019 and became an artist in December of 2019. I fell in love with the beauty products and so did all of the people around me. I saw what joy it was bringing women and I wanted to be someone to help spread this awesomeness!” Maskcara was created by Cara Brook a beauty blogger and makeup artist who wanted to “enhance the true beauty in a woman’s face, rather than covering it up.” The premise behind the line is simple – makeup that is easy to apply quickly and easily with beautiful results. Because our faces are formed with curves, hollows and unique shapes a wash of one color can diminish these angles and create a “flat face.” Maskcara’s premier IIID foundation was created to enhance skin tone, camouflage blemishes and dark circles, sculpt features and create “perfect lighting” for your face. Jen shares, “Maskcara beauty offers a 3-dimensional foundation that highlights and contours the natural curves of your face and can be done in five minutes. It’s a clean, sleek, easy, affordable routine perfect for busy women. The creator of Maskcara beauty wanted a quick and easy routine that accentuates our natural beauty and gives a natural yet full coverage finish, and it really delivers.” Maskcara Beauty carries a full line of skincare, makeup, brushes, compacts, clutches and perfume all made with top quality ingredients. Created with a brilliant refillable palette system of foundation, blush, illuminator, powders and eyeshadows; you can select shades that are perfect for you while eliminating colors that clutter up your makeup drawer like traditional palettes.

Jen notes, “There is no ideal age, skin type for this makeup and that is one of the many beautiful things about this product. This product is for all ages, for all skin types, for all color undertones, it is for everyone! Ladies with oily skin think cream is not for them and they couldn’t be more mistaken.” To discover more about Maskcara and how it can illuminate your inner and outer beauty, contact Jen to shop online or schedule an in-home appointment. “You can expect prompt service with open and honest communication. I have a Facebook page with information, videos, tips, tricks, live demonstrations and instructional posts daily! I will help you achieve the look that you want to accomplish. Everything is customized for you.” n

What's New: The Clean Car Experience How a Local Business is Going Beyond the Full Service Car Cleaning Experience By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

C

onveniently located in the south end of Sioux Falls in the growing business community at 85th and Minnesota, there is a new business that is designed specifically for the needs of busy families. Clean Ride Auto Spa is a full service car wash that takes the chore out of washing your car and turns it into an enjoyable experience. In addition to their drive-thru car wash, Clean Ride Auto Spa offers a full detail shop, self-service pet washing station, self-service vacuums and The Clean Bean coffee shop featuring Coffea brand coffee. Customers have the option to purchase a monthly membership depending on the desired services, or customers can pay per visit. When it comes to ensuring that your car receives the best cleaning service and customer experience possible, the owner group of Clean Ride Auto Spa knew they would need to employ the right people, which is why they hired Dawn and Heidi as managers. With over 15 years of experience in the industry Dawn ensures that the job is done to the standard you would expect from a full service auto cleaning shop. “We offer a little something extra at Clean Ride Auto Spa, if you want to come in and just get a wash we will give you a free wipe down, nobody else in the area does that. All the other places make you wipe it down yourself with your own towels. We will take care of that for you. We also have quick clean which will clean the inside of the car. If you have a need for a deeper clean, we have an express detail for a vehicle that needs more work. We also offer complete detail work and ceramic coatings which will make the exterior look nearly brand new and give the car an extra layer of protection.” Heidi, the second manager of Clean Ride Auto Spa quickly worked her way up from being a barista in The Clean Bean to Shop Manager because of her bubbly personality and the way she interacts with customers. “The owners wanted Clean Ride Auto Spa to be more than just a place to get your car washed, The Clean

THE OUTDOORS ARE OPEN We can’t think of a better way to stay six feet apart this fall than in South Dakota’s great wide open. Enjoy the world’s greatest pheasant hunting and make the greatest memories this year.

H U N T T H E G R E AT E S T. C O M Bean coffee shop is really designed as a gathering space. By offering a full line of coffee beverages and bakery items, The Clean Bean can be a great destination for book clubs, bible study or a quick friend meet up because we have a loft meeting space that overlooks our coffee shop. The best part is you can get your car fully cleaned while you are having your gathering. However, you don’t need to have a car wash to come to The Clean Bean, it is open to the community as another great coffee spot. If the full-service car wash and coffee shop were not enough, Clean Ride Auto Spa also offers the convenience of a full-service dog washing station. Guests are encouraged to use the self-service station to bathe their pet without the mess of bathing your pet at home, after all a clean dog is a happy dog! n
