SHE SAID YES TO THE DRESS!
Wedding Fashion Show Hopes to Raise Money for Cancer
By: Natalie Slieter Photos courtesy of She Said Yes to the Dress
Planning a wedding takes an abundant amount of time, money, and effort. There are so many miniscule decisions to make, but the end results are rewarding.
For Trudy Zalud, planning a simulated wedding is just as exhausting, but also so rewarding.
Zalud is the Director of the Enrollment Service Center for the South Dakota Board of Regents. She is also a member of the Theta Omega chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), an international service organization.
ESA will be hosting the 3rd annual She Said Yes to the Dress, a historical wedding dress fashion show that fundraises for Relay for Life. Zalud is project leader for the event and is supported by committees and subgroups of other women hoping to make a difference.
Zalud says cancer has affected her and her fellow chapter members so supporting this organization has brought some healing and hope to stop this dreaded disease from affecting others.
1947 1959 1990 1972 1983
The event will be held Saturday, November 4th at 1:30pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, SD. Tickets starting at $10 can be purchased in advance at several businesses in Vermillion. If unable to buy tickets in advance, Zalud reassures that affordable tickets will be available at the doors. Monies raised will be submitted to Relay for Life with the goal of raising $3000. Wedding dresses from ten decades will be showcased. Zalud states a dress from 1927, the oldest to date, will be modeled. It is a historical Flapper dress straight out of the Jazz Age.
Zalud explains models will walk down the aisle of the church, pose on a platform, and be escorted back up the aisle by a tuxedoed, all-purpose groom. As the dress is modeled, facts about the dress, bride and groom will be announced.
“I love the simulation of the church wedding,” Zalud says. “At the end, we have the models come down the aisle one more time and assemble up on the platform. This parade of gowns creates a wonderful grand finale.”
An added twist this year is the brides sitting in the audience will join the models on stage for the finale.
A memorabilia table will be set up for attendees to see what the brides used for wedding invitations, cake toppers, napkins and other wedding items. Zalud notes this allows people to gain more insight into the brides’ special day.
Bridal gowns from local celebrities make appearances too. Last year, bridal gown and bridesmaid dress of First Lady Linda Daugaard were featured. This year, bridal gown of Morgan Peck Kronaizl, Miss South Dakota 2009, will be modeled. Zalud discloses that its contemporary beauty combined with an exceptional story is guaranteed to impress.
Once the show is over and everyone has permanent smiles from taking photos, a reception will follow with wedding cake, nuts, and homemade mints, plus punch and coffee.
Last year, a model told Zalud that she loved wearing history and Zalud couldn’t agree more.
“The show is this amazing blend of history, nostalgia, romance, and fun,” Zalud says.

SIOUX EMPIRE ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW
By Jessalyn Holsing |
This year Sioux Falls will be hosting the 14th annual Sioux Empire Arts and Crafts show. Showcasing a variety of talents, crafters come to exhibit their handmade and handcrafted creations to share and vend, including fine art, clothing, jewelry, food, furniture, home decor and many other goods. Due to being the second weekend of November, the Arts and Crafts show is able to provide its wares during the holiday season, bringing in a great deal of shoppers who can find unique items that make the perfect gifts for friends and family.
Thanks to the rise of social media and vending on the internet, word of the Sioux Empire Arts and Crafts show easily spread through sites like Pinterest and Etsy, bringing an array of different creators both young and old—this isn’t just your grandma’s knitting! Currently signed up
exhibitors come from across the Midwest: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Wisconsin, Wyoming and, of course, South Dakota. Because of the widespread popularity of handmade goods, the show has been able to grow exponentially. The first year launched with 70 booths and approximately 2,000 shoppers, while this year the Sioux Empire Arts and Crafts show will have more than 280 booths and boast an estimated 14,000+ shoppers.
To accommodate the growth, the Sioux Empire Arts and Crafts show will be hosting some extra amenities including a food court with 5 to 6 food trucks, gourmet coffees, live music, and over 100,000 square feet for the shopping area. With everything there is to explore, visitors should anticipate spending a few hours if they want to be sure to get through all of the booths. n

ANGELS OF LIGHT BENEFIT
The Guiding Hand Foundation
By Chellee Unruh | Photos courtesy of The Guiding Hand Foundation
When you are diagnosed with cancer, everyone around you is diagnosed too. It takes a support system to get through the most difficult times, yet life around you continues. For you, time slows and each day is a new challenge but the rest of the world moves forward. The bills still come, the need to work still exists, and if you are a parent your children still need food, shelter, and love.
This is the story shared by so many that fight cancer, including Nikki Jensen. Nikki was a 26-year-old single mom diagnosed with stage II breast cancer that eventually moved to her liver and kidneys. Her family recognized her struggle of enduring chemotherapy while trying to maintain the finances of her household. Nikki’s cousin, Chris Jacob, and his wife decided to start a fundraiser for her. They used their side
business of selling Gold Canyon candles to raise money and bring awareness by selling the special pink ribbon candle for the month of October. Every time they sold the pink ribbon candle they put $20 towards the fund. By the time November came, through the numerous promotions, candle parties and sales, Chris and his wife were able to present Nikki with a gift of $5,000.
It was in this moment they realized that Nikki is not alone. There are many with cancer that share her same struggle of exhausting all financial resources only to see the bills still coming. Nikki’s battle with cancer inspired them to start The Guiding Hand Foundation. Their mission is to bring financial and emotional support to individuals and families battling cancer. They work directly with the vendor, such as the cable
20 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2017
company or utility company, to pay the bills so the person battling cancer can focus on their fight and not how they are going to keep the house warm during the winter. Chris says, “We try and take away the little stressors so that patients can really focus on their health. We want to be that guiding hand through their journey with cancer.” In additional to financial support, they also can connect the patient and family with additional resources in the community by collaboratively partnering with other organizations. “We want people to know that they are not alone, that there is someone there that will help them through this journey,” says Chris.
Nikki Jensen lived to see The Guiding Hands Foundation officially become a 501C3 in January 2015, then passed away ten days later. Through The Guiding Hands Foundation, Nikki’s fighting spirit lives on in the cancer patients they are able to help through their fundraising efforts. Their biggest fundraiser is the Angels of Light Benefit on October 14, 2017. “What makes this event stand out from all the other galas,” Chris says, “is our focus on the experience.” This is why they are bringing in country music artist Lauren Alaina with opener Jones and Company. In addition to an evening filled with top-notch entrainment, they will have unique live and silent auction items. Angels of Light also makes it affordable for everyone to come. Supporters can purchase a general admission standing-room ticket for $35 or a VIP ticket that gets them early access to the event with assigned seating. Angels of Light is their largest fundraising event allowing them to continue to support people battling cancer. To learn more about how you can help, log on to www. guidinghandsd.org. n

The venues for concerts in Sioux Falls continue to grow, but one local organization is striving to keep their fresh, top-quality concerts affordable for everyone through community support. Live on Stage, Sioux Falls Concerts Association has one mission: to bring world-class entertainment to the Sioux Falls community at affordable prices.
“It’s no secret that the performing arts face tough challenges today–it’s a battle for the attention of the concert-going public, especially with larger venues in the Sioux Falls area. But I think there’s a place for each organization,” Charlotte Hofer, vice president, said.
The association’s tickets are only $32.50 a show for adults and $10 for a student.
They are supported through ticket sales and sponsorships, but like many arts agencies, they are facing funding issues. “We are so grateful to the community for supporting us through ticket sales and sponsorships, but we need more support to continue our mission,” she said.
“So, if you love music and want to support a great cause, we ask you to get tickets for yourself, your family, for a friend, a neighbor–they make great gifts.”
Educational outreach and helping to create “tomorrow’s audience” are an important part of the Two On Tap mission. For the November show, Two On Tap will host a workshop with local Sioux Falls students from Balleraena Dance Studio. Those students will be performing the opening number along with Two On Tap at the show.
In addition, businesses can sponsor the concert association. “Their sponsorships help us maintain the subscription fee at an affordable level for all members of our community. We appreciate the companies who are already helping...and we’re hoping more businesses will sponsor us as well,” Charlotte said.
Ellen Welch, president of Live on Stage, Sioux Falls Concerts Association, said the group formed in 1930, “so we are celebrating 87 years. Over the years, our venue has changed and our name is slightly different,” she said,” but our commitment to offer world-class artists with an eclectic mix of music genres continues. Our mission has always been to provide quality concerts at an affordable price.”
What shows are coming up this season?
The Live On Stage, Sioux Falls Concerts Association has an exciting roster of artists coming up for 2017-18. Charlotte said, “I can personally attest to how good they are because I saw all of them perform in Nashville at the world showcase last year! It was a sultry 100 degrees and the music was even hotter.”
Pictured above: Two on Tap
Charlotte describes the shows for the upcoming year:
TWO ON TAP – NOV. 17, 2017
Electrifying performers. They breathe new life into classical song and dance! They have rhythm, style, humor, and Broadway flair. It takes you back to an era when couples like Fred & Ginger filled the silver screen with hot chemistry, lush vocals, and precision tap dancing.
ALBERT AND GAGE “ONE MORE CHRISTMAS” SERIES “EXTRA” – DEC. 12, 2017
Return of the popular show. Their musical Christmas magic is always popular, and longtime South Dakota favorites perform along with them–Kenny Putnam, Boyd Bristow and Mike Connor.
3 REDNECK TENORS – MARCH 2, 2018
You like Pavarotti? You’ll love these guys, and they are hilarious, too! They are classically trained artists, but it’s like Duck Dynasty goes to Carnegie Hall: down-home laughs with bigcity music! Their music ranges from gospel to country to Broadway to classical.
SIDE STREET STRUTTERS – APRIL 17, 2018
This group captures the charm and vibrant energy of New Orleans jazz at its finest! They wowed us in Nashville.
O SOLE TRIO – MAY 8, 2018
They’ve performed all over the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts! Sultry, passionate music and gorgeous voices! It’s an exciting classical crossover ensemble that includes a soprano, baritone, and a virtuoso on piano and violin.
All concerts are at 7pm at the Washington Pavilion. For tickets/information: 605-367-6000 or www.siouxfallsconcerts.org n

MAKE WATCHING FOOTBALL A COUPLES SPORT
Getting Through Football Season with Your Spouse
By Chellee Unruh
Fall has arrived and while most people enjoy seeing the seasons change, some couples go through a different kind of seasonal change that isn’t always enjoyable. Instead of enjoying a pumpkin spice latte and taking in fun events around the city, their fall is consumed by fantasy drafts, team jerseys, 24 hours of ESPN, and every weekend spent in front of the TV, causing tension between them. You guessed it: football season is back!
While some have been anticipating its return and are game-day ready with spirit wear, it can be a tough time of year for those who don’t enjoy sports. These “football widows” feel as though their relationship is put on pause from September until February while their significant others are enthralled with NFL, college or fantasy football, or a combination of all three.
It can be very problematic in relationships when football fans feel their spouses don’t appreciate their interests. Consistent negative comments during games or trying to manipulate them into doing other activities instead of letting them enjoy the sport may create feelings of disrespect or being controlled. On the flip side, the football widows may feel football is more important than the relationship and will experience feelings of rejection or neglect.
No matter which side you are on, the football fan or the football widow, there are a few things that you can do to turn it into a season that brings you closer together rather than farther apart.
For the Widow
GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME
There is an entertainment side to football. An easy way to start taking an interest in football is through dramatic movies about the sport (e.g., The Blind Side, Jerry Maguire, and Remember the Titans). These movies will teach you aspects of the game that you can talk about with your spouse. When you ask about your spouse’s favorite sport you are showing that you care.
MAKE FOOTBALL SUNDAY SOCIAL
Chances are there are other women that feel as though they are on the sidelines during football season. Invite them over! Let the guys watch football while the ladies engage in a different activity, whether it be just visiting, cooking or doing a fun DIY project together.
24 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2017
TIMEOUT FOR “ME” TIME
If you would rather avoid the sport altogether, that’s ok. You do not have to share all of the same interests. Use football time as the time to take care of yourself by working out, hanging out with friends, catching up on your favorite show or starting that hobby you have been wanting to.
Football Fans
It’s not only the football widow that needs to compromise; the fan should as well. There are a couple of things that the fan can do to avoid excluding a spouse during the long football season.
STAY IN BOUNDS
Shorten the day for your spouse by limiting the hours of game coverage you watch. Instead of turning on ESPN as soon as the sun rises, try turning it on an hour before the game starts. A lot of the information is a repeated from an earlier broadcast. Then when your team’s game ends, turn the TV off for a while and watch the highlights later. It will break up the day and not make it feel like it is being consumed by football.
PUNT ON AN OFF DAY
Relationships are about give and take. If your spouse is willing to watch your sport then be willing to watch her favorite show or do a favorite activity with her. The more time you spend together during the week, the more likely your spouse will accept your weekend football craze.
RECOGNIZE YOUR MVP
A little gratitude will go a long way. When the game goes on commercial break take that time to show a little love to your significant other. A nice thank you gift for her tolerance would be to buy her some spirit wear of her own. This way she feels part of the “team.”
With any relationship, communication is key. If you are feeling neglected or disrespected talk to your spouse about how you feel. Once you talk it through, commit to finding a solution that ends in a win for both of you. Remind each other that the most important team is the two of you and you can get through any season, even football. n

EYE GLAM
Look Fabulous While Wearing Glasses
By Chantelle Duncan
Glasses are coming back and making a big fashion statement! Now that there are many websites that have made high fashion frames affordable, women everywhere are wearing eye glam.
Just because your glasses slay doesn’t mean those frames are big enough to hide behind. Believe it or not, those frames draw a lot of attention to your gorgeous face.
Here are some tips to bring glam to your glasses.
BOLD FRAME MEANS EVEN BOLDER LIP
Brow line or even all black circle frames are very easy to work with. Black frames already accentuate your eyes, it’s time to accentuate your lips by wearing a bold lip. Bold lips even out the out the entire look and balances out the darkness of your frames.
CAT EYE MEANS BRIGHT EYE
Even though your cat eye glasses are making a fashion statement, those beautiful eyes of yours shouldn’t go unseen. Cat eye glasses usually widen your eyes; however, it is a must to have your eye brows shaped, and opt out of any sparkly eye shadow. A light brown, or a cashmere nude eye shadow will add to your natural glow while wearing a cat eye tortoise shell frame.
LAY THE FOUNDATION
Glasses do present some challenges with cosmetics, but that doesn’t make it impossible to wear foundation. A great way to conceal the shadows frames leave behind is by using a yellow concealer after you put on your foundation. Yellow counteracts any dark shadows or spots. When you are done with your concealer, make sure you use translucent finishing powder so that your glasses don’t slide down.
They say eyes are the windows to your soul, but don’t let those frames come between you and your beauty! n
Dr Munsinger and our experienced, caring staff are here to ensure your comfort and to provide you with the highest level of care. It’s our top priority.
We offer dental care for the entire family including checkups, laser dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

When the wind chill dips below zero, it’s hard to think of anything besides keeping warm. Practicality can easily outrank fashion. However, the following accessories can help you stay both warm and fashionable!
SCARVES
As you begin to break out the knit, wool, and cashmere, don’t forget that adding a scarf instantly creates a new, unique look. It’s a great way to get additional wear out of your favorite snuggly sweater.
SHOES/BOOTS
Winter and fur seem to go hand in hand. This season designers have shifted their furry focus to include shoes and bags. You’ll feel warm fuzzies carrying bags and wearing boots and shoes brimming with tufts of fur.
HATS
Hats are a great way to make a statement or stand out in a crowd. This fall, a few popular looks include colorful furry hats in all colors, knits, berets, and Newsboy hats, paired with funky details.
These options provide a lot of opportunity to create inspired, unique looks this fall. Have fun! n

GET THE PAPERWORK IN ORDER
In an accident, the first call should be to the police. A report will be written that documents the accident, determines liability and helps prevent the situation of one driver’s word against the other. The police will also issue a “red tag” for your vehicle, which verifies that the accident was reported. According to Veldhuizen, “If a car is brought to a shop and there is no red tag, the shop is required to call the police department to report it.”

Navigating the network of repair shops can seem daunting, but Veldhuizen and Colman maintain that there are many reputable choices in Sioux Falls. Colman advises, “Look for a shop that treats you well and has a good history of customer service.” For those who are new to the area or have little repair experience, Veldhuizen says, “If you don’t know what shop to use, check with your insurance agent, check online reviews, and ask your friends and family.” He further advises owners to avoid selecting a repair shop based on price alone, as estimates are based on the damage visible to the estimator and can vary widely. While the cost of parts and labor are mainly consistent between shops, the quality of the repairs and the customer service provided may differ greatly. To avoid issues, Veldhuizen says, “Make sure you are using a shop that has been in business for many years, has the latest in equipment and training, has a clean facility, experienced staff, and can handle all aspects of the repair process for you.”
GREAT ADVICE FOR A SEAMLESS REPAIR EXPERIENCE
By Jill Funke
Claims processed through insurance will result in the payment of the deductible, and owners should be prepared to pay that amount to the body shop when picking up the vehicle. Colman reminds owners, “Not all insurance coverage is the same. Some are very strict about the type of replacement parts used on the vehicle.” In cases where the other driver was at fault and the claim will go through their insurance, owners are not typically responsible for the deductible. Also, the cost of a rental vehicle to use while the repairs are completed is not automatic. Owners will want to verify their rental coverage with their insurance agent, as Colman states, “This is critical if the car is damaged out of town and you need to get home while the car is in the shop.” In some cases, repair shops offer loaner vehicles to their customers.
REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE THE VEHICLE OWNER
Owners should not feel the need to get multiple repair estimates. After they file a claim with their insurance company, they can notify their insurance company regarding which body shop they intend to use, as Veldhuizen contends, “You can take your car anywhere you want to have it repaired.” Colman echoes that sentiment by saying, “Insurance companies may have shops they would recommend, but ultimately, the decision is made by the owner.” At the repair appointment, the owner will receive the estimate or repair plan, and they should be able schedule repairs at that time.
TAKE WHAT YOU NEED
Because often technicians will have access to the interior of the vehicle, owners should remove personal belongings before the vehicle is dropped off for repairs. Veldhuizen has one last piece of advice for owners, “Don’t forget to take your garage door opener. You’ll probably want that when you get back home!” n

ANSWERING QUESTIONS ABOUT FOOD AND FARMING
Jerry Schmitz of Vermillion has spent more than 30 years growing soybeans and corn on his family farm with the help of his wife, Sally, and their two children. Through South Dakota’s Hungry for Truth initiative, Jerry also regularly engages with people about how he grows and raises food. While farming may not be a familiar subject for most people, food is.
“We all eat so we all want to make the best food choices for our families,” said Jerry. “It’s the same for farmers.”
That’s why you can usually find him at events like Family Fest, the Sioux Empire Fair, or others hosted by Hungry for Truth and the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, welcoming conversations with a smile. We asked him to share a few of his experiences and answer questions from South Dakotans.
How do you address questions about the safety of foods in the grocery store?
I try to listen to their questions, share information about how I grow food on my farm and find shared values to help them make choices that work for their families. When we kicked off the Hungry for Truth
initiative, we served sandwiches out of a food truck in downtown Sioux Falls for Downtown Restaurant Week. One young man rode up on his bicycle and told me he was worried about the safety of the food he eats because he couldn’t always afford organic. I told
Jerry Schmitz, Vermillion, SD
him that any food he buys in the grocery store, organic or not, is safe and equally nutritious. It’s the same food I feed my family. Then I shared some tips about how to fit organic foods into his budget. He said he appreciated the advice and felt better about his food choices.
When it comes to pesticides, how much do you really use to grow your crops?
I mix approximately a coffee cup’s worth of pesticides with water to cover an area about the size of a football field. I only apply them when necessary and use the latest equipment technology to be very precise in meeting established safety guidelines.
Should people be concerned about hormones in meat?
This is one of my favorite questions to answer at events. Most people are surprised to learn that farmers don’t use hormones to raise turkeys, chickens and pigs, so there’s no need to pay extra for the “hormone free” label on the package. If hormones are used in cows or sheep, there is a required waiting period before the meat appears on grocery store shelves to ensure that the hormones have completely left the animal.
What is your most memorable conversation?
At an event in Hill City, I met a man who told me he was a retired veteran. I thanked him for serving our country. He responded by saying he greatly appreciated me and my fellow farmers for what we do to grow food for people. He said, “Nothing I’ve done compares to what you do on the farm every day.”
That resonated with me. All of us work together to improve lives, take care of our families and leave the world a better place for our children. That’s why it’s important to be transparent and open about what we do on our farms.

STROKE OF GENIUS
Color Contributes to Home’s Complete Transformation
By Jennifer Dumke
When homeowners Susan and Kevin Horner designed their custombuilt house twelve years ago they never imagined the luxurious dwelling they enjoy today. Credited with a good floorplan, unique architectural details, and rich woods, all the elements came together making their main level transformation a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. “We actually never moved any walls or changed the layout,” says Horner as she happily gives her young granddaughter a snack in her high chair. With family-friendly also in mind and wanting to make better use of their space, Susan embarked on a complete design overhaul. Having an eye for design herself, Horner enlisted in the talents of Julie Hanssen and Laura Laird at Evolve Interior Designs. The team got to work waking up the Horner’s dream home from its nap and began a nine-month process.
A grand entry is just the beginning with a large rich wood door flanked by custom leaded glass sidelights and arched top transom window. Dark wood floors run throughout and are given new life with muted grey area rugs and runners. Sturdy accent columns with bird’s eye maple paneling on the lower portion provide the right

touch of contemporary with elegance. Leading into the great room, the space is filled with sunlight, earthy tones, natural elements and subtle hints of color. Simple pleated drapes cover the wall of windows that overlook a backyard oasis. Segmented into smaller living rooms, designers Julie Hanssen and Laura Laird focused on taking a large space and making it more livable with sleek, muted upholstery, limited accessories and substantial accent pieces. “We took a large space that wasn’t utilized and divided it into smaller seating areas to make the room more cozy and usable,” says Hanssen. “Like adding a seating area in front of the fireplace, making it easier to use.” And to enjoy. Whether sitting by a crackling fire or watching their favorite television show, this now usable space is a welcomed modification. A custom wall of cherry cabinets showcases collectibles and accessories. “Susan had a lot of pieces she picked up while traveling so we wanted to not only use them for display but also as design,” says Hanssen. Completing the look in the main level great room is a dry-stacked stone fireplace surround with a cherry wood mantle that nestles a cherished piece of art Horner had acquired. “I have a love for art,” Horner adds. “Sometimes the biggest challenge is finding a place for all of it,” she says with a smile.
Another key initiative for the redesign was to take a monochromatic space and give it depth. Using only paint and new furnishings, the main level is slathered in a neutral gray which instantly gives life to the wood floors and cabinets. The kitchen features glass-front cherry cabinets with black edging by Cabinet Works, and a curved island detailed with an earthy granite countertop and glass mosaic backsplash. Triple hand-blown glass pendants each feature a different shape which further creates the unique design of the home. Although Horner is reluctant to admit to a style, Hanssen best describes the look as contemporary eclectic; a modern, time-traveled collectible look. “I think not having a style is my style,” Horner adds. Yet she does have specific likes and dislikes. “We used a lot of custom-made clear textured glass throughout the home,” says Hanssen of the work created by Ken Bird, owner of Dakota Stained Glass. The curved transom above the main level door served as design inspiration. Clear textured glass was a good choice for its ability to allow sunlight to shine through while providing privacy and is used in various places throughout the home.
The kitchen opens to a casual dining area. An oversized, sturdy wood table is surrounded by high back, upholstered chairs. Lending to the unique style, a complementing handblown glass chandelier dangles above providing additional light. An arch top window is filled with frosted textured glass to diffuse sunlight while sliding patio doors lead to an upper level deck. Surrounded by lush trees, the cedar deck remains simple with horizontal wrought iron railings and contemporary furniture.

During the cooler months, the Horners especially enjoy spending time in their back porch. A knotty pine vaulted ceiling and walls gives the space a lodgelike feel that is complete with custom rustic accent tables and accessories. Surrounded by windows overlooking dense foliage, a dark, dry-stacked stone fireplace provides more elements of nature.
Another whimsical take on the outdoors is seen in Susan’s office. “This was just such fun wallpaper,” adds Horner. “I really don’t know how to describe it.” With a metallic golden cream background, a contemporary tree motif with hints of cinnamon reds fills the space and provides plenty of design opportunities. Custom built-in cabinets and desk keep the small space open and functional. For Kevin, a more rustic theme was used in his private office located just off the main entry. Tempered glass French doors, thick wood shutters on the windows, and faux finished walls in tones of melted caramel and cream add subtle contrast to the rich cherry wood built-in
cabinets and trim.
Yet when it comes to adding drama, the formal dining room takes center stage. Metallic faux painted walls, custom furniture and a copper vaulted ceiling demand attention. A specially designed sideboard uses a blend of natural materials such as shiny granite, rough stacked stone and tile, making it perfect for both storage and style. A large glass pendant light dangles above the custom-made table and plank wood side-chairs. Ample sunlight flows through the wood shutters and brightens the darker tones while adding a reflective quality to the use of mixed metals.
Additional metallic hues can be found in the main level powder bath. Faux finished walls with echoes of shimmery greens are lit up by a dangling square crystal corner pendant. A custom cabinet and granite countertop is finished off with a specially commissioned vessel sink and colorful floral arrangement for instant depth and interest.

DIY PHEASANT FEATHER TREES
SUPPLIES:
• Paper mache cone
• Pheasant feathers
• Craft glue, such as Aileen’s Tacky Glue
• Scissors
Decorating with pheasant feathers adds beautiful texture and a natural element fitting for our region. These “trees” provide fall décor that can easily transition into the holiday and winter season. Lucky for us they are readily available. If you aren’t a pheasant hunter, you likely don’t have to look far to find a family member, friend, or neighbor who can help you out with a supply of feathers. As a last resort, they are also stocked at most craft stores.
1. I recommend starting by sorting the feathers based on color and pattern. Lay them out in rows of like-feathers so that you can easily grab the next feather after glue has transferred to your fingers.
2. Work from the bottom of the cone up. Begin by adding glue about one inch up from the bottom in a wide line for a span of several inches. Tacky Glue will remain “tacky” for several minutes allowing you time to several feathers without needing to add glue after each feather.
3. Place the feathers so that they curves away from the cone, and the more colorful top-side is the part glued to the cone. Leave about a half inch that will fan out along the bottom of the cone. The curve of the feather will allow it to still clear the tabletop when the cone is set upside down. If you have a variety of sizes, place the larger feathers in the bottom
Story & photos by Emily Olson
rows leaving the smaller feathers toward the narrower part of the cone. Make sure to press the down-like feathers at the base of the quill into the glue as well. Don’t worry about the quill sticking up away from the cone due to the curve of the feather. You can trim it in the next step. Make sure to press the down-like feathers at the base of the quill into the glue as well.
4. If the feathers have a large amount of the quill sticking up away from the cone it may be difficult to cover with the next layer. Trim the quill tips once the feathers have adhered to the cone. Be sure the down-like feathers along the quill tip are held in the glue or they will fall off when the quill is trimmed.
5. Add another wide band of glue about one inch above your first row and continue second row of feathers that overlap about half of the first row. Continue these rows until you work your way to the tip of the cone, using smaller feathers for the narrower part.
6. The very tip of the cone covers well by using some of the downy feathers that may have fallen away from the other feathers when the quill is trimmed. n

Music Makes Exercise Easier
By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health
Athletes from the pros to pee-wee football know full-well what many of us might overlook: music makes a difference.
For generations, pre-game rituals have included certain tunes. Athletic trainers attest that you’ll get more reps, run more miles and generally work harder – for longer periods – if you harness those harmonies.

Minute Range
“It’s hard to pick a specific genre of music because it’s always a personal preference, but the beat is really the key, and it can kick up the way you work out,” says Avera Sports Training Specialist Mark “Coach Rozy” Roozen. “It’s not just a psychological edge. Research shows music, especially songs with higher beats per minute (BPM), can give you an edge when you’re running, lifting or even cooling down.”
Music can transport you from the grind of that bike ride up a hill to another place. Roozen explains, “When you can focus on something else and disassociate with the strain or exertion, you’ll be better off and can go on longer. It works not just during, but before and after a workout as well.”
Roozen provides a rough framework for BPM rates for a wide range of activity. Results can vary on personality, but for the most part, the chart below can help you experiment with BPM, and use them to warm up, work out and cool down.
“One key is consideration and the other is safety. Wearing headphones can be a distraction especially if you’re doing cardio outdoors, such as running on a busy sidewalk or roadway. Don’t use them if it’s unsafe,” Roozen stresses. “In the gym, you can’t have everyone blasting their own songs at their own stations, so headphones work better in those situations.”
The Internet is awash with sites that will identify the BPM for just about any song so you can evaluate the beats per minute of your favorite songs.
Roozen says research shows when we exercise and develop a “flow state” that music can help us stay in this “autopilot” like state.
“It’s often named ‘getting in the zone’ and many athletes swear by certain songs to get to that place,” he says. “Other athletes will sync their movements to certain songs, and almost everyone knows how rhythm aids us when we do manual work or work out. It’s also a good way to boost mood or bring back good memories. So yes, make sure you give it a try the next time you lift, run or hit the elliptical.” n

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT HEARING LOSS AND ALZHEIMER’S
By Jennifer Dumke
It’s the brain that controls hearing, but it needs good signals from the ears. With this said, aging adults with mild, moderate and severe hearing loss are more at risk to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. According to recent studies, scientific proof even puts hearing loss and the dementia connection above other factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, age, sex and race.
Jane O’Connell, Aud, CCC-A, FAAA, has worked as an audiologist since 1988 and is currently working with patients at Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat Hearing Center. Throughout her career, she has encountered many patients with Alzheimer’s or other forms
of dementia in addition to their hearing loss.
And although the reason people with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia is unknown, O’Connell says there have been some breakthroughs to uncovering the connection. “One thought is that the increased cognitive load that occurs from having to “de-code” words, which arrive in the brain with missing parts brought on by hearing loss, reduces the cognitive reserve or resiliency, placing them at higher risk for dementia.”
Since Alzheimer’s and dementia are not treatable conditions, this gives new hope for a better quality of life if hearing loss is
80 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2017
detected. “Once a medically treatable condition has been ruled out, a hearing aid is often the best and only treatment for hearing loss,” says O’Connell. “Hearing aids, of course, are not a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal with hearing aids is to restore as much of the spectrum of hearing for conversational speech as possible.”
Often patients are hesitant to receive hearing aids. In fact, O’Connell says that once hearing loss is diagnosed and hearing aids are recommended, most people wait an average of 7 years before actually getting them. “Having people come in and take the leap is the biggest obstacle,” she adds.
And it’s not just about having an improved quality of life, it could also improve cognitive functions. “When hearing loss goes untreated, the brain uses resources it would otherwise be able to use for various tasks in its attempt to compensate for the missing speech cues,” O’Connell explains. “This taps into the person’s cognitive reserve. Hearing aids can reduce the load for the individual, freeing up some of the brain’s other resources for their usual purposes.” Another idea is that hearing loss can increase the likelihood of social isolation, which is also a known risk factor for dementia.
Another form of treatment is education. “Providing good communication strategies to patients and family members is important when someone has hearing loss. Examples such as not trying to speak to someone from another room, using face-to-face communication and avoiding background noise are a just a few ways.” She adds there are also hearing stimulation “exercises” that can be employed to challenge one’s listening skills.
Hearing loss generally develops slowly, which makes it hard to recognize. O’Connell stresses that since getting proper treatment for hearing loss is now known to reduce the risk of dementia, getting a hearing evaluation in mid-life may preserve quality of life as we age. n

BREAST CANCER SURGERY
Knowing what treatment option is right for you
By Sanford Health
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, women are faced with many difficult decisions. With so many surgery options, it can be daunting to know which one is right. But you don’t have to make that decision alone. The team of surgeons at Edith Sanford Breast Center is here to guide women on their cancer journeys, helping them make the decision that is right for them.
When deciding which surgery option is best for you, there are many factors that can play into your decision. It matters the stage of cancer, the location, your genetic risk factor and personal preference. It’s important that every woman fully understands all her options and the pros and cons that go along with each.
LUMPECTOMY
A lumpectomy will remove just a small portion of the breast that includes the area where the cancer is located. While a lumpectomy is generally done in an outpatient
setting, you may have to receive other forms of treatment along with it. For example, you typically will also have to have radiation therapy. This helps to ensure any remaining cancer cells in the breast are killed.
A lumpectomy, while a more minimal procedure than a mastectomy, can still leave its mark on the breast. You might have a dent or bulge where the tissue was removed. There are cosmetic options you can elect to have that can reshape the breast by using skin, muscle and fat from your lower abdomen, back or buttocks. However, if you are having radiation, it’s typically suggested to wait until after it is complete before having breast reconstruction. That is something you and your surgeon can discuss together.
MASTECTOMY
A mastectomy is fairly common for breast cancer patients. It removes the entire breast and depending on where the cancer is found and the severity of it, some women will have both breasts removed. There are many different
types of mastectomies with varying degrees of removal.
A simple or total procedure removes the breast tissue.
A modified radical mastectomy removes the tissue and a portion of the lymph nodes.
A nipple sparing mastectomy removes all the breast tissue but leaves the nipple area alone.
HIDDEN SCAR™ SURGERY
Now at Edith Sanford Breast Center, women can receive lumpectomies and nipplesparing mastectomies through the Hidden Scar™ method. This approach means your incision will be in a location that is hard to see, so your scar will be less visible when it heals. Not having the constant reminder of the surgery has shown to help women recover both emotionally and psychologically.
RECONSTRUCTION AND ONCOPLASTIC SURGERY
For many women, breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as the lumpectomy or mastectomy. The plastic surgery and breast surgery teams work closely with one another to coordinate the surgery and your recovery in order to give you the most seamless care possible.
After a mastectomy, the breast can be reconstructed in many ways. Some women choose to have breast implants, which are filled with saline or silicone gel. Another method of breast reconstruction is to create a breast using the patient’s own tissue, such as skin and fat from the abdomen, back, or buttocks. Or some women opt for wearing padding inside their bras or some do nothing at all. All of these options have pros and cons. What is right for one woman may not be right for another.
The type of reconstruction best for you depends on your age, body type and the type of cancer surgery you had. Your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon can help you decide and answer any questions you may have.

Filling Her Days With Enthusiasm
Caroline has converted one of her bedrooms into what she calls her “activity room.” In it, she has her loom and spinning wheel, her sewing machine, and her computer.
But Caroline’s interests travel way beyond that room. In her parlor, she has a harp; on her wrist, an Apple watch; in her refrigerator, homemade yogurt; and beyond her front door more pursuits.
“I feel I’ve been given the enthusiasm for interesting things,” says Caroline.
Caroline grew up in Madison County, Iowa, and then attended the University of Iowa, where she met her future husband. After graduating, they moved to his hometown of Canton, South Dakota, about 20 minutes south of Sioux Falls.
With her nursing diploma, Caroline sometimes worked in a doctor’s office, but mostly, she devoted herself to being a full-time mother and wife. She and her husband raised two sons and a daughter.

In 2012, on her 80th birthday, she moved to Touchmark.
“I moved to Touchmark, because I had been taking care of our home by myself for 20 years after my husband died, and I just wanted to retire from that,” she says.
Exploring her world at home
Caroline has practiced yoga for many years and has added tai chi since moving to Touchmark.
She is not inclined to use the exercise machines, preferring walking. She and her dog are often seen taking morning strolls on the Touchmark paths.
She belongs to a Touchmark book club. She plays Texas Hold’em twice a week at Touchmark and drives 25 miles to Canton once a week to play Mahjong with friends.
She enjoys taking the Touchmark bus with friends to restaurants and special events. “If the bus is scheduled to go to lunch, dinner, or other activity—I’m on it! I really enjoy the social aspects of it.”
“Touchmark is such a wonderful community. When I go away, I really miss it and the people. And when I come back, it is so good to see everyone again. We really look out for each other. It is very much a family and community from the staff to the residents. It’s a great experience.”

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF CHANGE
Empowering Individuals, Communities and Cultures Across the Globe
By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Reistroffer Design
What began as young woman’s desire to take an international mission trip has transformed the hearts of a family and started a movement that has captivated many – a movement to cultivate hope across nations by transforming education, agriculture and environmental conditions to support sustainable development across the globe.
Miranda Broin was raised by parents who taught her the value of serving others. Throughout her childhood, she recalls taking part in a lot of volunteer work with her family and admiring her parents for their generosity and philanthropic efforts. Miranda was a sophomore in high school when she went on her first service trip to Colorado. This small project fueled the slow-burning fire for service in Miranda’s heart that had been growing over the years, and it increased her desire to travel abroad for a mission trip.
Through the youth group she attended in Dell Rapids, SD, this dream became a reality. She was elated when she came home one night to share with her family that her youth group would have the opportunity to travel to Kenya the following summer. She was going, she said, whether they wanted her to or not. Though her parents were wary of sending their teenage daughter across the world, Miranda’s excitement quickly captured the attention of her mother and sister. With a little encouragement, her father and brother soon jumped on board as well, and all five family members made the decision to travel to Africa in 2012.
As fate would have it, their group ended up being transferred to a different project than they had originally anticipated. Miranda believes that switch was meant to be. They were given the task of renovating the Kakuswi Special School for the Deaf in a small village called Tawa. The bond between their group and the children of Kakuswi was instantaneous; they were immediately captivated by those loving, intelligent boys and girls, and many of the relationships made remain intact today.
“I think I can speak on behalf of our whole group when I say that it was, for lack of a better term, life-changing,” says Miranda. “The relationships we made took hold of our hearts and changed us for good.”

The Broin family: Miranda, Jeff, Tammie, Alyssa, and Austin
(Above six photos) January 2017: The Seeds of Change board, director Alicia, and other SOC team members visit a Kenyan farming village that has flourished after implementing the methods and technology they’ve learned through Mission Grow.
As they traveled from their hotel to work at the school each day, Miranda’s dad, Jeff Broin – being from an agricultural background – noticed that the crops in Kenya were sparse, underdeveloped and suffering from drought. “Their crops were a stark contrast to the lush fields we see in South Dakota,” says Miranda. “My dad was so intrigued that he actually tried to bring an ear of corn back to South Dakota to show his colleagues, but the people working customs weren’t too fond of that idea when we got back to the states.”
Following their trip, Jeff – who is the CEO and founder of POET – felt moved to speak about their experience at the company’s quarterly meeting, which reaches out to all 28 locations across the Midwest. It was at this meeting that Seeds of Change began to take root. POET team members were inspired and excited by the mission trip the Broins had taken part in, and Jeff and his wife, Tammie, wanted them to have a chance at that life-changing experience. The following summer, a group of POET team members and their families embarked on a trip to Kenya, a trip that would lead to the development of what is now Seeds of Change.
Through the effort now known as Mission Hope – one of the three major projects supported by Seeds of Change – that group spent ten days constructing greenhouses at an all-girls school called Travellers’ Oasis Centre (TOC) in 2013. TOC is a school in Sultan Hamud, Kenya that provides secondary education for girls living in vulnerable situations who might otherwise be unable to complete their studies. The greenhouses were built to provide a sustainable food source, as well as an educational resource for the school. To this day, they enable women to learn skills that allow them to gain independence and support their families.
Since this trip a group from POET has returned each year. In 2014 when Miranda returned with her mom, Tammie, and her sister, Alyssa, construction began on a new dormitory for TOC. The relationship between Seeds of Change and TOC has flourished, and the progress made at the school has been remarkable. The other Mission Hope groups over the past 4 years have assisted in a variety of projects: a new dining hall/chapel, classroom renovations, completion of the dorm and bathrooms, and landscaping projects, among others. The students are thriving in their changing environment, and there are plans for more renovations in the future.
While Mission Hope began to grow and prosper, additional projects started to spring up out of the initial seed that was planted. The organization soon expanded to include two more projects: Mission Grow and Mission Breathe.
It was during the initial trip to Kenya when, seeing the desolate farmland, Jeff’s wheels began turning. He knew there had to be a way to improve conditions for Kenyan farmers. Jeff had spoken with a local farmer and learned that the reason the crops were so small and sparse came down to drought and technique.
Mission Grow began when Seeds of Change partnered with Farm Input Promotions-Africa (FIPS), a nonprofit that provides simple, effective agricultural solutions to sub-subsistence farmers in developing nations. Through that initial project, Seeds of Change funded 60 Village Based Advisors (VBAs), local farmers who are elected by their communities to advise their peers. VBAs work with Mission Grow to learn effective agricultural practices, which they can then share with other farmers in their region.
That small initial project was so successful that Seeds of Change went on to fund two overlapping four-year installments of Mission Grow in Kenya. Mission Grow now comprises 250 VBAS, and 487,184 people have benefitted by implementing

simple technology on their farms. For example, local farmers are taught to use a tillage process that penetrates the soil more deeply, giving the crops the moisture and nutrients they need to grow and flourish. This, along with a range of other small yet effective changes in technique, has resulted in 500-900% higher corn yields and 200-300% higher legume yields. Chickens are being vaccinated and dyed purple to deter predators, reducing the amount of poultry loss to the extent that flocks are able to expand tenfold in some cases. Famers are turning a profit.
While the results are staggering, Miranda shares, “What’s really great about Mission Grow are the transformations we see happening in people’s lives. Instead of scraping by, they can support their families and provide better nourishment for their children. It’s like my dad says, ‘Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.’ These farmers are transforming their own lives by putting what they’ve learned into action. They’re able to do more than just survive; they are thriving.”
The success and support of Missions Hope and Grow led to the development of the most recent project, Mission Breathe. Through Mission Breathe, launched in Haiti, Seeds of Change is working to improve the health and living conditions of families, particularly women and children. By giving people access to clean-burning cookstoves fueled by biofuel, Mission Breathe is working to eliminate indoor pollution, one of the leading causes of death for citizens of Haiti and other developing countries. Seeds of Change looks forward to introducing this project in other parts of the world; in fact, clean cooking options are being explored for the kitchen at Travellers’ Oasis Centre.
Miranda is astounded by all that has grown out of her initial desire to serve through that first mission trip to Kenya. “I am so fortunate to come from a family that has the ability and the passion to make these changes possible. My parents taught my siblings and me that if you are healthy and you are blessed with enough, it is your duty to pass that on and do something good for someone else. They showed us how to lead with a servant’s heart, and I am so grateful for that.”
Through it all Miranda remains grounded and humble, giving credit to those that have really made Seeds of Change a reality. “Seeds of Change has grown into this movement that is so much bigger than us, and I feel blessed to be a very small part of

Miranda says the experiences she has had through Seeds of Change have set the stage for what she wants to do with her life, something she knew after that first trip to Kenya at age 17. Though she has switched her major twice during her college career, the end goal has always been the same. “If what I’m doing isn’t with the intent of making life better for even one person, then it isn’t worthwhile to me,” she says. “We are all here on borrowed time, and we might as well use that time to leave the world better than we found it.”
Miranda is currently finishing school and considering her next steps. She will graduate in May with a degree in psychology. She continues to serve on the Seeds of Change board and helps to plan the organization’s many fundraising events, including one coming up on October 19th, the fifth annual Dine with a Fighter. This event, hosted at The District, gives people the opportunity to have dinner with their favorite UFC and Bellator fighters while raising money through live and silent auctions. Tickets to Dine with a Fighter are available to the public, and 100% of the event’s proceeds go to support Seeds of Change.
Miranda isn’t sure what she will do once she graduates, but she is confident that her future will largely include her work with Seeds of Change. “Once you have worked in service to others and see the changes that you have been a part of, it’s hard to imagine wanting to do anything else,” shares Miranda. For now she will continue her role in helping to grow the bountiful impact created by Seeds of Change.
