MISS SD PAGEANT LEAVING HOT SPRINGS AFTER 72 YEARS By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of the Miss South Dakota Pageant

T

he Miss South Dakota Pageant has existed for 72 years and has been held in Hot Springs the entire time. But next year, the pageant will be moving elsewhere. Six communities bid to have the pageant held in their town, and Brookings was the winner. The pageant will be held in the Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University and is projected to be there in 2020 and 2021 as well. The pageant came together in Hot Springs in 1946 thanks to E.B. Adams, a lawyer and civic worker in Hot Springs who wanted to replace a previously held carnival and beauty contest with an even bigger and better one; and Lenora Slaughter, the woman who encouraged adding talent and intelligence to the traditional beauty competition. From there, Slaughter began looking for representation of the Miss America pageant in every state. To honor the late E.B. Adams, Hot Springs gladly applied for and received the Miss America State Franchise. The first Miss South Dakota Pageant was held on July 11, 1947.

16

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

Since then, the community has happily embraced the pageant contestants each year and have their own set of traditions. They hold a parade each year and the contestants complete various community service projects. September Kirby is the executive director for the Miss South Dakota and Miss SD Outstanding Teen pageants. She said the Hot Springs community is sad to see the pageant go after all these years. “It has been such an important part of their summer and for the volunteers that have been involved out there,” said Kirby. “They understand they had to look at options; they could see the need.” The move to Brookings comes for many reasons. Currently, the Mueller Center where the pageant is held in Hot Springs can only accommodate 400 people, but the Performing Arts Center at SDSU has a capacity for 800 people. Additional space will allow more people to attend the pageant. Scholarship potential also increases with the move to Brookings since the community is larger and significant scholarship support was set aside as part of their bid.

Everyone Welcome!

Kirby said much of the details for the pageant move are still being planned, but they do plan to continue some of the traditions set in Hot Springs, such as the parade and contestants partaking in community service projects. The hope is the pageant will gain more exposure in the Brookings area and show how it positively impacts South Dakota. “The pageant provides opportunities for girls in community service, scholarship and interview activities,” Kirby said. n

Relax

TO RECONNECT Indulge in a Spa Date that Relaxes Your Body and Strengthens Your Connection By Chellee Unruh

I

t seems as though fall is always a very busy time of year. School is back in session, businesses are preparing for year-end and the holidays are just around the corner. It is pretty easy to get stressed out as you watch your calendar fill up with activities, events and meetings. It can be hard to find time for you to relax and spend time together as a couple. We know that setting aside time for dates with your spouse is an essential ingredient to any healthy relationship. Depending on how long you have been together as a couple, dates can become a bit redundant. There are only so many new restaurants popping up for you try. So as the colder weather creeps in one of the best

18

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

things you can to do reduce your stress and nurture your relationship is a cozy date at the spa. If you are looking for a spa day experience you can expect to pay anywhere from $130 - $300+. If you compare this to a regular date of dinner, drinks and a movie it still maybe be a little more expensive but worth every penny for the intimate bonding time you will get with your spouse. Fortunately, Sioux Falls is rich with day spas that can fit your schedule and your budget. If you are willing to indulge a little then try a couple’s massage. Day spas will usually set the mood by playing soft music, dimming the lights, lighting

candles and adding scents that will enhance the relaxing experience. The amount that you are willing to invest in your date will determine how long your tranquil experience will last. The recommended length of time for a couples massage is ninety-minutes, giving you some alone time after the massage is over. Don’t just limit your experience to the standard Swedish or stone massage, why not try something new? Alternatives to having a standard massage include body wraps, mud baths or flotation therapy that you can do as a couple. Float therapy is designed to reduce stress and ease muscle tension. All of the ailments of the day will feel like they are melting away in a soothing floating experience. If this type of date is more than what your budget allows don’t write it off the books as a date option, recreate the experience at home. Set aside an evening where it is just you two alone for several hours. It’s all about creating the relaxing atmosphere so invest in some aromatherapy candles or oil diffuser, dim the lights, and select a spa station on Pandora. You can also dampen a few towels and then pop them in the dryer for 15 minutes to create the warm soothing towel that you can drape across the back while you become each other’s massage therapist. Not sure how to give a massage, don’t worry, Youtube offers plenty of instructional videos to teach you how to give a proper massage without causing injury. If this hasn’t enticed you into a spa date yet, here are five more reasons why couples who spa together stay together. IT’S A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE

MAKE

IT

Dinner and a movie are fine but it can become a tired stale date and doesn’t offer any uniqueness to your dating life. You need to mix it up a bit to keep things interesting and make each other feel special. Having a spa date after a stressful week goes beyond the normal date. While the experience may be short-lived, the memory you make will last a lifetime. IT SETS THE MOOD If a date that focuses on body connection, relaxation and intimacy doesn’t put you in the mood to spend quality time with your spouse, then you may want to re-evaluate your relationship. Escaping into a spa date is a great way to reconnect with what made you fall in love in the first place. LIVE IN THE MOMENT

YOURS

There is no room for technology at a spa and that’s a good thing. It means that you can get uninterrupted time together. In the fast-paced world we live in, this could be one of the most valuable gifts you can give your spouse. ENCOURAGES CUDDLING There is no doubt that total relaxation from a spa will help you sleep better. With both of you sleeping better it does wonders for cuddling. There are few things worse than sleeping with a partner that is tossing and turning all night. FEELING BETTER A spa experience relaxes the body and the mind. When you are both relaxed then you are not worried about daily stresses and you are not arguing with each other. You will leave the spa looking and feeling better than when you arrived. Your body is recharged and it will show on your face making you more attractive to your partner. Whether you have a special occasion coming up like a birthday or an anniversary or you simply want to celebrate your relationship, then you should consider a spa date. Your body, soul and spouse will thank you for it! n

EMBODYING THE MISSION with tenacity By Natalie Slieter

“By degrees, with God’s assistance, we can do a great deal.” - Venerable Nano Nagle

“When I first met the Sisters, we formed a bond that was heart to heart. We had a common calling. They are very passionate and dedicated to truth. The tenacity they show each day, in the services provided, makes me feel a world of peace as we work to overcome issues together. To make a difference in the world, we stand and remember by moving forward.” - Clara Hart, Community Volunteer and Board Chair for Refugee Congress

N

ano Nagle lived in Ireland during a time of oppression for the Catholic Church. Despite the circumstances, she was a tenacious woman with deep convictions about ministering with the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable, people who hold a special place in the heart of God. Nano violated the penal laws by opening secret schools to educate Catholic children. This was work she felt strongly about despite the risk of severe consequences for herself and her family. Sister Janet Horstman defines tenacity as flowing from a clear and focused sense of purpose or call and being persistent, despite the obstacles that lay ahead. “Everything Nano did flowed from her deep convictions and call,” Sister Janet explained. Nano made the decision to violate the law. Sister Janet says it was to obey a higher law, from God’s law. Nano was living with her brother at the time and he was furious upon discovering what she was doing. Nano knew she couldn’t stop, so she offered to move out of her brother’s home, but he relented and she persevered. As the schools grew, Nano brought Catholic sisters from France to assist her,

which was also against penal law. After their arrival, she realized they were unable to teach outside their convent due to their enclosed lifestyle. Sister Janet imagines the difficult decisions she faced, and believes Nano’s deep center was filled with God’s love from which she drew strength that allowed her to carry forward her work. It wasn’t until later she was called to start her own community of sisters. Following an invitation by Bishop Martin Marty in 1880, Presentation Sisters from Dublin, Ireland traveled to Dakota Territory filled with Nano’s spirit. They came to teach Native American children and French settlers as they began to establish their ministry across the globe. Their journey was difficult, as was the first winter, yet they were determined to carry on and were assisted in doing so by the generosity and hospitality of the Native Americans. Today, one way the Presentation Sisters show tenacity is by partnering with others to continue and grow their healthcare and education ministries in very challenging times. They are also committed to the variety of justice issues including peacemaking, working with immigrants, environmental issues, abolishing the death penalty, and

assisting people to have a voice when they aren’t included at the table where decisions are being made that impact their lives.

MARCY’S

PERMANENT MAKEUP

“We are blessed with so many wonderful partners who embody the mission, live it everyday and are so committed to the legacy of the sisters,” Sister Janet said. To show tenacity, Sister Janet encourages the Sioux Falls community to first get in touch with what matters to them deep inside to figure out what their mission is. If it’s tough to follow through on commitments, start small and practice being faithful. “Good intentions are a good start, but a piece that’s often missing is following through on it,” Sister Janet explained. Surround yourself with a community of individuals with like values that can be your support system. When it gets tough, be tenacious and keep working toward your mission, like Nano all those years ago.

PREP AND PRIME

Story, hair and make-up by Chantelle Duncan, licensed cosmetologist Photos by Margaret Pennock

D

o you ever wonder why your makeup always spreads at the tip of your nose? Or maybe why your foundation looks “patchy” a few minutes after applying? Here are some secrets on how to prep and prime your skin for a flawless and long lasting application just like a professional. GET TO PREPPING

1. We know it is vital to cleanse your face before bed and in the morning. For an impeccable makeup application, it boils down to the preparation you but into it. Cleaning all surface dirt makes way for a clean canvas to a beautiful portrait. 2. After cleansing, use a small amount of toner on a cotton pad. This will reduce the size of your pores, balance the pH levels in your skin and wipe away any oils. Toner refreshes your face and makes for a great barrier for the outsides impurities. IT’S PRIME TIME! 1. Above all you must moisturize your face. Keeping your skin well hydrated is the secret to less foundation and concealer. 2. Adding primer to your face will create smooth skin, eliminate dry patches, fill in fine lines and wrinkles, and minimize pores. Priming allows the magic to happen when the foundation meets your face. The entire process takes about 5 minutes. The result will be less product and time used for actual makeup application, giving you more time to show off your fabulous skin! n

SQUEAKY CLEAN Look no further than your kitchen pantry for natural cleansers that really work!

By Margaret Pennock

S

earching for cleansers that are natural but effective can be a bit difficult, especially finding ones with an affordable price tag! Fortunately there are some clever alternatives that you can find right in your own kitchen. Read on to discover some cleaning hacks that are pretty amazing and really work! PICKING UP BROKEN GLASS Picking up the larger pieces isn’t usually the problem but finding the tiny shards can be a real hassle. Simply use a slice of bread as a mitt to easily and effectively pat up shards of glass. The shards will stick to the bread, which can then be thrown away. Voila, you can safely walk barefoot again.

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

GREASE STAINS Grease leaves hard to clean, ugly spatter marks on fabrics and other nonwashable materials such as suede. To remove it, simply sprinkle a mound of cornstarch on the grease spot and allow it to sit for 12 to 48 hours. Simply brush it off and into the garbage can. If any residue remains, repeat! REMOVE RUST AND TARNISH If you don’t appreciate a bit of tarnish on your brass or copper, just grab a bottle of ketchup to get it sparkling once more. Smear the ketchup on the item and allow it to sit on the metal for at least five minutes, more if the tarnish is heavy. Finish it up by washing with soap and water for a gleaming finish. ELIMINATE UNPLEASANT ODORS Have stale or stinky scents emanating from your favorite fabrics? Break out the booze! Vodka is actually an effective odor eliminator and can be used on the finest fabrics. Just pour the vodka into a spray bottle and lightly spritz the fabric. This also works great for freshening mattresses. Just spray lightly and allow it to dry before adding your bedding. Re-spray if any scents linger. RED WINE STAIN LIFTER Red wine is delicious but it’s also famous for its ability to stain unsuspecting carpets and upholstery fabrics. The yin to red wine’s yang is white wine, believe it or not. Known as “The Barbra Streisand Trick,” just take a small amount of white wine on a white or light colored cloth and pat it on the red wine stain until it is removed. Once the stain is gone, pour a glass to have a congratulatory toast for your success! n

HOW TO COOK DELICIOUS & HEALTHY ROOT VEGETABLES Story & photo by Ashley Sornsin

D

elicious might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of root vegetables. They tend to have a reputation for being bitter and earthy and actually look a bit intimidating to cook. However, if you’re bypassing these healthy vegetables that are currently in peak season, you’re doing yourself a disservice. If you’re willing to give these simple steps a try, I am confident you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how delicious root vegetables can be. While in peak season, fall through spring, root vegetables will be at their sweetest, but following these steps will help you to properly prepare them year-round. Root Vegetables can be prepared many ways, from steaming and boiling to sautéing and grilling and, my favorite, roasting! Roasting has a caramelizing effect that enhances the sweetness and flavor, so no matter how bitter you think root vegetables are, roasting can completely transform them. Roasting is the perfect method for non-veggie lovers as well as those who don’t like to cook.

42

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

Roasting root vegetables is both delicious and easy, so give them a try! Here’s an easy how-to guide to roasting root vegetables: 1. Wash vegetables and cut into similar sized pieces (this ensures even cooking). 2. Preheat oven to 400ºF. Place vegetables in a single layer on a cookie sheet, drizzle with avocado or olive oil and sprinkle with pink Himalayan sea salt. 3. Roast on the middle rack for 35 minutes (less or more depending on the size of your veggies). You want them tender – use a fork to poke them to see if they are done and they should start to brown, that’s when they caramelize! 4. Enjoy! n

BUDGETING FOR THE HOLIDAYS By Lisa Peterson

I

t’s that time of year again. Stores are starting to run holiday commercials, local coffee shops are offering pumpkin spice lattes, and you may be contemplating how you’re going to afford “the most wonderful time of the year.”

The holidays are expensive. From party-throwing to gift-giving, the holidays can be overwhelming, especially if you’re on a tight budget. One of the best things you can do to make the holidays less stressful is to create and stick to a holiday budget. To do that, you’ll want to spend a maximum of 1.5 percent of your family’s annual income on holiday expenses, said Tiffani Turner, Retail Manager at Bank Midwest in Sioux Falls. “Let’s say your annual income is $50,000 multiplied by 1.5 percent, that’s $750 to spend,” said Turner. “This is tough because it really depends on your monthly expenses or family situation like having a child in college.” Unforeseen expenses can throw a wrench into the situation, Turner said. “It truly depends on your circumstances and what works best for you.”

46

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

Looking for Health Insurance You Can Trust? Still, some will spend beyond their means, forgoing a budget. “Making a budget and sticking to it is hard when you like to give gifts to others,” said Turner. “Having a tangible document helps me hold myself accountable.” While we may cringe when holiday decorations appear after Halloween, buying early seems to be a strategy many millennials favor. In a recent article in Inc. magazine entitled “The Surprising Way Millennials Tackle Holiday Shopping,” Jordan Rost, VP of Consumer Insights at Nielsen said, “Millennials are most likely to either shop early or catch up quickly at the end if they’ve forgotten some gifts. The average is about $250$500 spent on each gift from this group.” Millennials spending still comes second to parents. According to a survey conducted by RetailMeNot, parents spent an average of more than $1,700 last holiday season and spent $330 per child for holiday gifts.

For some of us, it may be easy to overspend using a credit card, said Turner. “Keeping track of your receipts helps you know what you spent and who you are spending it on,” she said, adding “This helps ensure you’re staying within your budget.”

The Howard Group

offers a Purposeful Wealth Management Practice where our team empowers clients - primarily women and families, to feel comfortable managing their financial lives, especially during and after times of significant change.

Turner suggests checking credit card statements carefully during the holidays for any unauthorized charges. “I encourage others to check their statements regularly whether online or paper statements,” she said. “Unauthorized charges happen often. Unfortunately, it is the world we live in. Although disputing these charges works to get your funds back.” As for Turner, she starts her holiday shopping early and uses a list. “I make my list of those I need to buy for – family, friends, coworkers, teachers, etc.,” she said. “We decide what we want to spend on each person and budget for it. We try to start early and be proactive so we’re not scrambling during the holidays. There is enough stress during the holidays, I wouldn’t want to add to it.” n

ENJOYING LIFE WHILE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE By Stacey Kracht

Y

our financial success starts with having a plan. Brent Reilly, Senior Vice President and Director of Private Banking with Loft Advisors, advises families to start by getting on the same page with common financial goals. From there, a family can begin to put a plan in place that supports an acceptable quality of life today balanced with a plan to retire comfortably down the road. A big challenge he sees with many families is growing into just enough debt obligations to feel uncomfortable. “One can buy and finance just enough to feel the burden of debt,” he says. Just because a debt-to-income ratio analysis says you can afford to spend up to a certain amount on a house or anything else you finance doesn’t mean you have to spend that much. There are certain things everyone needs to live comfortably, of course, but there is also a wide disparity of expense related to these choices that families make every day. At the end of the day, one can only invest or save for tomorrow what is left over today. The trap is that people do just that – they get items they want or think they need, leaving little left for putting into liquid savings, an investment account or retirement account, paying themselves first and their future last instead of the other way around. “Many families don’t have a plan and don’t really know where they’re spending their money,” Reilly says, suggesting to first find where you’re spending your money. A good starting point is to track your spending for two to three months before you do anything. “Some

48

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

people are surprised where they are or aren’t spending their money. Maybe they found they were spending $500 a month on eating out.” By cutting that $500 back to $250, you can reallocate that $250 to something else within the monthly budget. The good news is that technology can make tracking your spending very simple. All you have to do is pull out your credit or debit card statement and look at the places you’ve been spending your money. Reilly also says that understanding what your debt load is and the timing and terms of repayment is a big part of successful financial planning. Negotiating through the challenges of consumer debt, student loans and credit card debt and knowing when the debt will be completely paid off will help you make steps to change your financial situation. The key is finding the right balance, and that is a different equation for every family. Working with a trusted financial advisor to help put together a plan that works for you and your family is advice that works for everyone. The challenges each family experiences are unique. Most people don’t see these things on a regular basis, but a successful trusted financial advisor works with these and many other financial situations on a regular basis. There is significant value to be had leveraging the experience of professionals to put your family in the best position to achieve their financial goals. n

Brave Love

The Journey of Open Adoption

Most people can name a friend, a relative, or a family member who has taken on the challenge of being a single mother. Single mothers are lifted up in our society with empowering words like loving, dedicated, strong, selfless, and brave for raising their children on their own. Single mothers have earned their societal respect and badge of bravery, but they are not the only mothers who deserve to be lifted with the same regard. There is another type of mother in our society that goes through similar emotional struggles as a single mom, but instead of being respected for her decision she is sometimes met with inaccurate stigmas; she’s a birth mother. While most people acknowledge the sacrifice a birth mother makes, some make comments like, “I could never do that.” The unintended consequence of that statement is leaving a birth mother feeling like she did something wrong rather than feeling empowered for her hard decision. Birth mothers are sometimes misjudged as not wanting their children. This stigma may be one of the reasons why only about 2% of unplanned pregnancies result in adoption. In South Dakota each year there are only about 50 birth mothers who choose adoption. Deciding to make an adoption plan is a very brave choice. It takes a strong woman to admit that she is not in a place in her life to provide the physical, financial and emotional support her child needs. It takes an unselfish love to put the needs of her child before her own wants and select the family that will give her child everything she wishes she could provide. Just like a single mom, a birth mother’s journey is a hard one that requires her to be strong, selfless, and brave. Chrissy spent the first two trimesters of her pregnancy going back and forth trying to decide whether adoption was the right option for her. She was still coping with the loss of her 2-year-old son to brain cancer when her baby was conceived. She wondered if she had the strength to let go of another child, yet she knew with her current circumstances and the two children she already had at home, she was not in a place where she could provide the life she wanted to give the baby she was carrying. So, in the seventh month of her pregnancy, Chrissy began her adoption plan.

It began with a Google search that ultimately led her to Hughes Law Office in Sioux Falls. “When I spoke with Beth Hughes on the phone, I knew instantly that I found the firm to coordinate my adoption,” recalls Chrissy. “Beth was warm, comforting, reassuring and guided me through the process. I never felt pressured, only secure in my decision when she sent me the packet of profiles to go through.”The first profile that Chrissy read became the family that she selected. Chrissy said, “I will never forget, when I looked at the back of the profile it said love, love, love, lots of love. I knew at that moment Adam and Amanda were the family to raise my baby girl.” Chrissy did force herself to look at the other profiles in the packet but she kept coming back to Adam and Amanda. The open adoption began with regular phone calls. Amanda remembers being a little nervous with the first call because when the opportunity to adopt Chrissy’s daughter came along, they had already begun the process of adopting a baby from another birth mother and birth father. That couple had dropped out of contact, but then later resurfaced. “I remember thinking, are we being selfish if we get both babies, but Chrissy was remarkable. She set our minds at ease and reassured us that it made her want us more because her daughter would grow up with a sibling.” Chrissy kept Amanda and Adam involved the entire time. They went to where Chrissy lived and had the opportunity to meet for lunch and go to doctor appointments. Chrissy shared, “I wanted them to be part of as much of the pregnancy and birth as they could. I wanted them to really feel like this was their baby.” Fighting back emotions, Amanda recalls, “In the days leading up to the birth of Gentrie, Chrissy kept reassuring us that she wasn’t going to change her mind and that she knew she was making the right decision.” “Thinking back on it now, I almost feel like she was more of a support and comfort to us than we were to her. She was always so positive and never felt sorry for herself, which to me makes her such a remarkably selfless person given all that she had gone through with the loss of her son and giving her daughter to us to raise.” When Chrissy went into labor, it went pretty fast. She wanted Amanda to be the first one to hold Gentrie, but because of how fast the delivery went Amanda didn’t make it in time. It was important to

Chrissy that Gentrie feel immediate love so she decided to hold her. Chrissy would classify that moment holding and looking down at her daughter as her bravest moment because she knew how much it would hurt to let her go. It also became her proudest moment because she just made Amanda’s dream come true. “The look of love Amanda had in her eyes when I handed Gentrie to her was so beautiful it made it all worth it. This kind of pain was not the insufferable kind of pain like my son’s passing. Adoption isn’t a loss. It was painful, but I was comforted knowing that I just gave my daughter the best life I could and found her parents that love her as much as I do.” With the support of Hughes Law Office and their open adoption process, Chrissy and Amanda stay in contact through an app called Child Connect. It allows healthy communication with boundaries. Updates and pictures are loaded to the website so Chrissy can download them. The app will even remind Amanda when it is time to send photos so there is no added pressure waiting for the communication. In addition to using the app, Chrissy and Amanda keep in contact through phone and text. If Chrissy could share a message to every woman that finds herself in a similar situation questioning whether or not to look into adoption as an option, she would say, “ Know that you are not being selfish to make an adoption plan for your child. You are being selfless. If I were truly selfish I would have kept Gentrie and we would have struggled, but I did what was best for Gentrie and not for me. If you do decide to make an adoption plan don’t let anyone make you feel bad and remember that you are strong, you are beautiful, and you are doing the right thing. I tell myself this every time I miss Gentrie and it helps.”

LABOR OF LOVE Creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece

By Jennifer Dumke | Photos by Margaret Pennock

A

lthough the true meaning of a “labor of love” means taking on a task for pleasure rather than reward, for homeowner Austin Nielsen, tackling the remodel of this breathtaking two-story home nestled amongst the lush trees in central Sioux Falls had a reward. Originally constructed in 1967, the nearly 4,000 square feet of finished space was waiting for someone with a creative touch to take its unique design to the next level. But Nielsen wasn’t planning on tackling anything but a successful open house. A licensed realtor for over a decade, Nielsen’s plan on hosting an open house quickly turned into a purchase agreement…for himself. “I initially fell in love with the location and oversized lot,” he adds. “And I only had plans to do a soft remodel,” he laughs. After rounding up his crew of subcontractors, ideas quickly formulated and plans expanded which led to an extensive main level remodel complete with removing walls, replacing windows and completely gutting the kitchen. The result is an inviting space that exudes contemporary elegance with unique architectural detailing that is enhanced by modern day design. Monochromatic and bright, the entry way leading to the main level great room features crisp, neutral hues and ample natural sunlight. One of the most distinctive features of this home is the pecky cypress wormwood paneled walls. Having been milled on-site, these one-of-a-kind slabs of wood are rare and highly coveted for their distressed appearance. In fact, Nielsen is required to carry an additional $150,000 insurance rider to protect and cover that amenity alone. Painted a creamy white to add depth to the deep grooves, the cypress wall is a unique talking point in this space. Having a knack for interior design, Nielsen selected a number of pieces from Interiors Etc. and quickly went to work using the home’s unique architecture to compliment the interior décor. A large vaulted ceiling with thick beams adds an

airy feel while neutral-toned upholstery and oversized accent pieces allow the casual room to stay cozy and relaxed. An original wood-burning fireplace remains understated and simple while flanked by custom niches with accent lighting for added drama. Using an abundance of natural materials, the floors are 7-inch wire brushed oak and anchor the room with their subtle, darker hue. Leading into the pass-through dining room, Nielsen explains the number of architectural modifications that were made to both this space and the kitchen. With the assistance of John Haensel, owner of Hometown Remodeling and Construction, the transformation began taking shape. Wood floors extend throughout and blend with the large, reclaimed wood dining table surrounded by neutral-toned tufted high back chairs. To accommodate entertaining and additional storage, a custom built-in buffet with dual tones of natural wood stain and creamy paint was included. Modern recessed lighting and a dangling wrought iron and glass pendant light fixture keep this space bright as it leads into a screened-in porch. With its distinctive shape and overlooking a lush, private backyard oasis, the screened-in porch is perfect for relaxation and taking in the natural beauty of the area. Back inside, the heart of the home is a place of pride for Nielsen. “We basically completely gutted the kitchen,” he adds. The extensive modifications, which included custom cabinet design concepts by Carissa Trygstad from Showplace Kitchens, now include a larger island and pantry. Crisp, classic white subway tile with black grout from Sunderland Brothers of South Dakota line the back wall and blend with white cabinets. A large center island with granite countertops from Stone City Kitchen and Bath serves both form and function with rustic accent pieces and convenient cooktop. Glistening stainless steel appliances from Karl’s TV & Appliance are the perfect metallic touch to the earthy dwelling. Dual, oversized

windows remain uncovered for ample natural sunlight while triple pendants and custom under cabinet lighting add unique interior highlights. For a nostalgic feel that adds to the rustic elegance of this home, wall panels from Builders Millwork & Window are painted a crisp white to blend with the cabinets and white subway tile. Despite the relaxed feel of the home, the master bedroom is a stand-out for casual luxury that solicits slumber. The expansive space features a large bed with layers of textured neutral fabrics. A simple, tufted headboard is part of the space’s focal point: a large, Mongolian elk head. Vaulted ceilings keep the space open and are accented with shiplap to coordinate with other areas of the home. A separate seating area with sofa and fireplace is simply finished off with original painted brick that glide seamlessly into the taupe walls. Dual windows flank the bed and are finished off with thick plantation shutters painted creamy white for privacy. To add depth to the space, black accents and a dark leather sofa are the perfect pieces for contrast. The master bathroom is luxury at its finest. Creamy white marble honeycomb tile lay underfoot while neutral walls, custom painted cabinets and trim all blend together for modern elegance with a timeless twist. A large soaker bathtub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Galleries and walk-in shower add convenience along with the dual sinks. Subtle tones of sage green along with the glimmering shine of the chrome fixtures are the perfect finishing touches.

Finishing off the main level is a quaint powder bath that despite its size, makes a bold statement. Muted blue wallpaper features a raised white floral motif that is paired with gilded gold accents and rustic bead board ceiling. But this beauty and transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took twelve long months of living in the lower level for his dream home to be transformed. But Nielsen is thrilled with the main level make-over and is now turning his attention towards the upstairs and lower level. “It was a lot to take on,” he adds. “But I’m happy with how it turned out and don’t see moving anytime soon,” he laughs. The upper level is tentatively being turned into a home office and the lower level already shows signs of progress with a reclaimed wood bar and elegant crystal light fixtures. “I also plan to have custom cabinets built on each side of the fireplace,” he adds. But for now, Nielsen is just living in the moment. “I have no idea what the future holds,” he adds. It just may be that this 4,000-square foot impulse buy is giving Nielsen the enjoyment and creativity needed to last for years to come. n

GLITTER LEAF GARLAND Story & photos by Emily Olson

C

ombine natural elements with sparkle to create a chic focal point in your fall decor this season. Use glitter in gold and copper tones for a subtle, muted effect. For something more vibrant, look for glitter in reds, browns and oranges. Whatever the colors, be sure to use ultra fine glitter instead of traditional “school glitter to keep it looking sophisticated! 1. Use artificial leaves with deep veigning to ensure the leaf pattern remains pronounced when covered in glitter. Adhesive spray makes this project quick, but be sure to work in a ventilated area on a newspaper or large piece of wrapping paper that can be discarded. Working with a couple of leaves at a time, spray one side with a generous coat. 2. Carefully transfer the sprayed leaves to a new piece of printer paper and sprinkle immediately with glitter. The paper under the leaves will catch the excess for use on remaining leaves. Complete the adhesive spray/glitter steps until one side of all of the leaves is covered. When the glitter is dry, repeat the process on the other side of the leaves.

3. Using an X-Acto knife, cut two small slits on either the top or bottom of each leaf. The slits should be just large enough for the twine feed through. Using a combination of top and bottom allows you to string the leaves so that they appear to be falling naturally in various positions. 4. Mount the branch across a mirror, window, mantle or empty wall space. Cut pieces of thin twine for the desired length of the garland pieces that will be suspended from the branch. 5. Wrap a small piece of tape around one end of the twine to minimize fraying. Thread each piece of twine (tape end first) through the cuts in the leaves, varying leaf size and direction. Cut off the tape covered ends. 6. Tie the twine garland pieces on to the branch and adjust the leaves up or down the twine and trim off excess twine where needed. As long as the cuts in the leaves are small, they should be held snugly in place on the twine without any glue.

HELP IS ON THE HORIZON Advanced Technology Offers New Relief for Chronic Sinus Sufferers By Jennifer Dumke

F

or the millions of adults who suffer chronic sinus pain, current treatment plans can be a vicious cycle of oral antibiotics, steroids and sometimes even surgery. But emerging technology is now offering an alternative to traditional treatments. It’s called Sinuva and it’s currently being used to treat chronic sinus patients at Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat. Paul A. Cink, MD, FACS has been specializing in ear, nose and throat including sinus disease for nearly 30 years and is optimistic with its results. “These patients are the first generation of sinus implants for local drug delivery,” adds Dr. Cink. “And Midwest ENT is one of the first of 10 implanters in the United States, so we are very excited to offer this type of treatment to the community.”

But just how does this miracle treatment work? Sinuva is an implant that reduces polyps and nasal congestion and obstruction through a dual approach. First, it opens the sinus cavity and then delivers targeted anti-inflammatory medicine straight to the nasal polyps. Over time, Sinuva continues to release for up to 90 days, providing months of relief. The simplicity of the Sinuva implant is that it can easily be placed during a regular office visit. After numbing the nose prior to implantation, most patients are ready to return to their regular daily activities without any recovery time. Dr. Cink also adds, “With medication impregnated into the polymer with the device, it will regularly administer medications over a 3-6 month period without the patient having to do daily medications. Therefore, we don’t have to depend on the compliance of the patient taking the drugs correctly.” And when it comes to removal, the device often expels itself. Sinuva is made from agents that slowly soften over time. This, paired with a decreased polyp size, means the implant is easily removed. “And this is just the beginning,” adds Dr. Cink. “I believe we have finally found a solution to treating chronic recurrent sinus infections and polyposis.” For years, bioengineers have been looking for a way to place medication directly to the sinuses that will offer treatment and avoid common side effects such as weight gain, tolerance and bone and tissues problems brought on through current treatments. As technology continues to advance, Dr. Cink adds that more patients are being treated effectively without needing recurrent systemic drugs or multiple surgeries thanks to this emerging treatment option. “I believe the future is very bright for sufferers of chronic sinus disease with the addition of these sinus implants for local drug delivery.” n

IS YOUR PHONE TO BLAME FOR DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY? By Donna Farris, Avera Health

S

martphones – what would we do without them? Sometimes that small rectangular box seems like a part of our person and we feel at loose ends without it. In fact, says Wallace Jackmon, PhD, LCSW-PIP, Avera Medical Group psychologist, smartphones and their apps can become an addiction that leads to anxiety and depression. Jackmon has been studying the link between smartphone apps and a higher risk of anxiety and depression for the past several years. “There’s data to support a correlation between anxiety and depression and accessing certain social media sites,” he says. He was recently invited to speak on the topic at the National Conference of the National Association of Social Workers 2018 in Washington D.C. Depression is more than sadness. Common symptoms include feelings of emptiness, hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness or helplessness; loss of interest in things you used to enjoy; fatigue; difficulty concentrating; sleep

68

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

problems; loss of appetite or overeating; restlessness and irritability; thoughts of suicide; and physical symptoms such as headaches. Anxiety includes worry about a number of events or activities with difficulty controlling the worry, including but not limited to fatigue, irritability, restlessness, sleep disturbance and muscle tension. Smartphone apps can be addictive because of “intermittent reinforcement,” similar to gambling in a casino. In other words, you get continual feedback and intermittent rewards, and you want more. “There’s an end to a book or a movie, but social media never ends. That hardwires the brain to think, ‘I want to keep using it…and get to the end of it,’” Jackmon said, listing apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Reddit. The average Facebook user spends more than 55 minutes a day on the app. With 1.8 billion users worldwide, that means some people are spending a few minutes while others are spending hours. “And that’s just Facebook alone,” Jackmon added. On Facebook, one can easily compare their own lives to

others who seem to be happier. If negative behaviors like bullying take place, that’s even more insidious. Smartphones can interrupt sleep patterns, work and relationships. “Research shows that 87 percent of teens sleep with their phones,” Jackmon said. If they are staying up late, or if they wake up to see every message or notification, they are not getting adequate sleep, which in itself can lead to depression and/or anxiety. “If you’ve seen two people eating together at a restaurant, and one or both of them is looking at their phone instead of talking to each other, that’s a phenomenon known as phubbing,” a mash-up of the words phone and snubbing, he said. Fear of missing out – FOMO – is another arm of the addiction. “Especially with apps like Snapchat, where the posts appear and are gone. Or like Twitter, when the notifications keep coming fast, and you feel like you’re in contact with people you normally wouldn’t be – like a famous actor or professional football player,” Jackmon said. Continually getting news updates can make you feel personally involved in a national or world crisis and keep you focused on bad news, creating fear and uncertainty of the unknown. How do you know when it’s a problem? Ask yourself these questions: • Does it interfere with your thinking, sleep or behavioral patterns? • Does it interfere with your interpersonal relationships? • Does it keep you from being productive at work or in the classroom? “If so, it could be creeping into the addiction field,” Jackmon said. The solution is easy to identify, but not so easy to do. “Limit your phone time, and make sure your children have limits,” Jackmon said. Consider a new rule, such as no one uses their phone at the dinner table. “It’s about being more aware and mindful of how your phone might be interfering in your life,” Jackmon said. Most of us aren’t able to entirely disconnect from our phones, but ask yourself, “Can you cut back?” n

THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE How Faith and Perseverance Helped Debra Become a Survivor By Ashley Schwab, Sanford Health | Photo courtesy of Sanford Health

I

n August of 2013, Deb Owen’s life was completely altered by a stomach cancer diagnosis. Despite unbeatable odds, she declared herself a future cancer survivor and determined every day to stay strong and live in faith. Five years later, Deb, 52, is cancer free. And she thanks God, loved ones and her Sanford Health care team for this miracle. THE UNEXPECTED Deb, a wife and mother of two sons, had gone in to see her doctor after experiencing symptoms she thought were related to acid reflux or a stomach ulcer. One test led to another, until she was getting a biopsy. And at this point, she knew she was dealing with a more serious issue. On the day Deb got the call with the results from her

biopsy, she was facing another family tragedy. Her nephew had fallen 200 feet to his death in a workrelated accident, and her family was on their way to his funeral in Idaho. “We pulled the car over to the side of the road at the doctor’s request. He let us know the diagnosis, and I let him know a little bit about what was going on in my family,” explains Deb. “I asked him, ‘Do we continue driving to Idaho or should we turn the car around?’ And he told me, knowing what he knows about this type of cancer, he would recommend we turn our car around right now and come back to Sioux Falls.” A special team had been assembled. On her returning drive, the many members called to introduce themselves and walk her through the process that would start immediately the next morning.

Sarah Sachen & Holly Hines

Making “About mid morning, we had just done a test, and the doctors were coming in to tell us the results. I remember them high-fiving, so excited that the stage of cancer was not to the degree it could have been – it was only stage I or stage II,” says Deb. “It was a real blessing to see that they were fully committed to helping us with this journey.” Her oncology team met as a group, in what is called a tumor board, to determine the best path of treatment. It was decided to follow a cancer protocol typically used for a different form of cancer. This treatment would be extremely strenuous, involving nine weeks of aggressive chemotherapy treatment, surgery to remove Deb’s stomach, and then nine additional weeks of the same aggressive chemotherapy treatment.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: Compounded Low Dose Naltrexone May be the Answer

A DECLARATION “When you’re first diagnosed, you think this could be it. This could be your last time you see your kids, and the reality of not being able to raise your kids is really hard on us moms,” says Deb. “I determined early on that I was going to describe myself as Debra Owen, future cancer survivor.” “Faith is a big part of why I am stronger than cancer. I always credit it to great care and lots of prayer. There’s a balance of life that cancer teaches you, if you are listening. Cancer teaches you to take a step back and rely on faith and trust,” adds Deb. “Trusting my doctors, trusting that God has a plan and trusting we would get through it together.” Deb’s entire treatment path was seven months, from August of 2013 until March of 2014, with an additional year to fully recover from the changes to her body. Through the strength of herself, her family and friends, and her care team, Deb beat cancer. Now, she spends her days mentoring other cancer survivors and just being thankful for what she has. “I am so thankful to be alive,” concludes Deb. “Before I was diagnosed, I was kneeboarding behind our boat. Last summer, I had the energy and strength to kneeboard again. So, there is a life after cancer, and it’s a good life.” n

Dancing

THROUGH LIFE

By Natalie Slieter | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

M

adeleine Scott is poised as she articulates her dance resume composed of professional performance opportunities and teaching experiences that fill pages; a resume much more extensive than most people’s her age. At just 23 years old, she is an accomplished ballerina who has danced around the world with some of the best dancers in the world. The passion she has for her craft is apparent, but she’s just as passionate for her family and her work at the Sioux Falls FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers clinic, one of four physical therapy clinics her mother owns in South Dakota. Madeleine grew up in Beresford, SD with her mother, Ruth. Besides being close with her mother, she is also close with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents, keeping in touch with them almost daily. When she was three years old, she met one of her best friends at a tractor pull, which led to their mothers enrolling them in a dance class in Sioux Falls on Wednesday nights. The class focused more on creative movement than technique, but Madeleine thought it was fun and wanted to keep dancing. She started taking jazz dance lessons and began competing locally through Ultimate Cheer and Dance, located in Beresford at the time, but quickly realized she didn’t enjoy that type of dance nor was she great at it, something her mother was honest with her about. In order to advance her technique, Ruth advised Madeleine to try a ballet class. Ruth knew ballet was the best way to formally increase a dancer’s ability especially after her work with Miami City Ballet when she began as a physical therapist in Florida. Ruth heard about a ballet dance camp at Balleraena in Sioux Falls. After the two-day ballet emersion, Madeleine told Ruth,

“Mom, this is it. This is what I want to do.” She fell in love with the art form and chose Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls as her home to begin her ballet career. Shortly after starting at Dance Gallery, she began placing at local competitions so decided to leave jazz behind and dive headfirst into the world of ballet. During the summer of 2007, she flew to New York City with her mother to attend the American Ballet Theater Young Dancer Workshop. After an arduous audition process, she received a scholarship, which Madeleine says is the only way she would have been able to go to any of these ballet summer programs and year-round programs. Surrounded by some of the best professional dancers in the world, she was dancing eight to nine hours per day. When summer was over, she was invited to stay to attend a yearround dance program, but declined. “That would have required my mom to leave her brand new physical therapy practice,” Madeleine said. “I look at my mom’s practice and I’m so proud. She’s helped so many people and saved lives. I’ve seen so many miracles in this clinic.” She returned home and continued with ballet. At 12 years old, she was dancing 30 hours per week while completing seventh grade at O’Gorman. She would do a full day of school, then take the bus to downtown Sioux Falls to attend ballet class in the evening. Along with that, she was flying to New York City one weekend per month to train with one of the best dance coaches in the world, Elena Kunikova, for the spring Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition. Madeleine explained that her first dance lesson did not go well as Elena thought Madeleine was much older and because of that, thought it was too late for her to truly do ballet. However, once Elena realized Madeleine was only 12, she was all in. “She said, ‘I will train the baby,’” Madeleine said with a laugh. To prepare for the 2008 YAGP competition, Madeleine trained even harder. After returning from her evening ballet class in Sioux Falls, she would continue to rehearse in Beresford. Some nights Madeleine would be fighting sleep, debating whether to go to her nightly dance practice. Her mother always reminded her that if she wanted to dance and be the best, she had to put in the work even when she didn’t want to. At the YAGP 2008 spring competition in Denver, Madeleine was the second youngest competitor in her division and because of her hard work and training with Elena, she was ultimately recognized for her skills and technique. She would move on to the New York City international finals. Madeleine worked harder than ever refining her technique and absorbing every ounce of advice from both Elena and her mother in preparation for the New York City Finals. She was making history at this competition, as she was the first dancer from South Dakota to ever compete, let alone place. After the competition, she earned a spot and a scholarship for the Rock School for Dance Education Year-Round Program in Philadelphia, PA and this time, she said yes to attending. “They were considered the best school,” Madeleine said. “It was always my dream to go to the Rock School. It was a huge honor to be there.”

Right before turning 13 years old, she moved to Philadelphia, leaving behind her mom and extended family. Schooling at the Rock was difficult. They sometimes danced 13 hours per day while taking online academics. The hours were extremely grueling and fighting injuries was common. Sometimes Madeleine would skip lunch in order to continue dancing and refining her techniques.

role in a performance of the “Nutcracker;” Yellowstone Ballet Company in Montana; Ballet West in Utah; Aspen Santa Fe Ballet in Colorado and New Mexico; and her latest endeavor with Sacramento Ballet Guest Corps de Artist. On top of that, she also attended the University of Utah, earning degrees in community engagement, nonprofit leadership, and ballet performance.

“I was always the first one into the studio and the last one out. I maintained that for a long time throughout my career,” Madeleine said. “It’s the motto I live by.” During her two years at the Rock, Madeleine also attended School of American Ballet (SAB) Summer Program in 2009 in New York City at the Lincoln Center on a full scholarship. She was also a YAGP finalist in both 2009 and 2010. After her time at the Rock, she wanted to branch out so she made the move to New York City at the age of 15 and began training with the Gelsey Kirkland Studio Company from 2010-2011. While working with Gelsey Kirkland, she had notable performances in “Giselle” and “Sleeping Beauty.”

Now, Madeleine has seamlessly transitioned into her role at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers as the dance liaison and director of sales and marketing. She loves helping clients regain mobility and providing dance medicine, a specialty only provided by FYZICAL in the area. She has learned irreplaceable knowledge from spending time with her mother, one of the nation’s experts in dance medicine. She hopes to dance for a few more years, but is happy to be back in South Dakota with her family in between dance contracts. She has big dreams for Sioux Falls and her mission is to open a professional dance company here. She feels the city deserves an elite dance company and hopes to pass on her passion for art to the community.

She followed up her time with Gelsey by gaining employment with several ballet companies, including Northern Ballet Company in New Hampshire, where she held a principal

“Dance is the domain in which my spirit and my body unite and speak together freely, unfiltered,” Madeleine said. “Dance doesn’t need justification; what it is when I dance is enough.” n

FROM A BUNNY QUILT TO RUNWAY COUTURE Designer Mikayla Tjeerdsma Keeping the Time-Honored Craft of Sewing Vibrant and Relevant By Virginia Olson Photos by Good Life Photography

W

hat can inspire a 10-year-old-child? For Mikayla Tjeerdsma it was a beautiful, handmade quilt a seamstress at her church had created. She was so fascinated with the quilting aspects and handwork she had to try making a quilt herself. That not-so-perfect bunny quilt became a stepping stone to her journey in becoming a designer. After nearly 10 years as a student at the Institute of Design & Technology SD (IDTSD) Mikayla showed off her first collection line during Fashion Week in September. Her 13 new designs geared for the 20-something woman carry the label Kalon by Kayla. Mikayla finished her designs last December then turned to her Dutch heritage when choosing fabric in New York City. Dutch architecture with its mix of color and asymmetric patterns became her inspiration. She also took stock in the works of Rembrandt, a Dutch artist. His use of light and metallics became part of a showy blue dress — her favorite sewing project. Creating her personal brand came right down to using her own calligraphy then hand sewing each Kalon by Kayla label. For Anita Kealey, Creative Director of IDTSD, Mikayla is authentic. “Mikayla has the gift of being disciplined, making sure to follow through with all her projects. She likes being challenged and can accept criticism.

Fashion design is a tough business, but Mikayla has what it takes,” says Anita. Anita believes Mikayla’s years of commitment and time are now paying off. “She started at the ground floor doing the summer camps. She learned from mentors. IDTSD tapped her special energy and brought her in to inspire the love of sewing in younger girls . Not only did she learn dedication and passion working hours and hours on projects, but she also gained a skill,” she said. Part of the Maker Movement, Mikayla believes sewing is a process. She says taking the time to learn hand sewing is not only valuable for attaching a button or fixing a hem, but that you can make something truly unique. “As a designer, you have to grasp it all so that what you make is exciting and not bland. Most important — you have to be patient,” she says. Mikayla believes IDTSD keeps the time-honored craft vibrant as it continues to reach out to a new generation. “It’s why I interned at summer camps. It’s such a joy to see kids taking up interest in sewing and learning the skill. Often people ask: “Isn’t sewing a dying art?”’ Mikayla says, “Not in my world!” n

ocated in the picturesque rolling hills of southeastern Sioux Falls, the incredibly charming Pine Hollow Hideaway Airbnb is a short one-mile drive into the country on 41st Street. Nestled in a beautiful valley, the two bed, two bath modern farmhouse sleeps seven and encompasses eight gorgeous acres including a breathtakingly landscaped pond and petite vineyard. New to the Airbnb business, owners Lisa and Darren Blair own and operate Blair Masonry Homes in Sioux Falls. “We have owned a construction company for the past 25 years and we’re passionate about anything home related. We have taken on just about everything but this Airbnb is exciting because it’s unlike anything we have done before. We’re looking forward to this new journey and so excited to meet new people from all over!” According to Lisa, “Pine Hollow Hideaway is a perfect getaway for travelers passing through as well as locals looking for a place to unwind away from home. Most of our guests are looking for a quiet, peaceful retreat away from the city life. Many are visiting family here in Sioux Falls and we have some just looking for a staycation.” The property boasts an amazing outdoor fireplace which edges a gorgeous pond filled with fish, turtles, frogs and lily pads. Plenty of seating is available for relaxing and taking in the wildlife and beautiful landscaping that surrounds the property. Lisa encourages her guests to stroll through the grape vineyard and visit her horse, Alaya, during their stay. She shares, “The home has been updated with a fresh and beautiful farmhouse style including a dash of white shiplap which gives this home unique character. The fully equipped kitchen has three full size ovens and a gas stove cooktop and includes all the cookware you need for entertaining.” In addition, there are two cozy fireplaces in the upper and lower level living rooms, and a darling faux fireplace in the

ounded in 1988 by Ted and Bev Pins, Creative Surfaces is renowned for delivering uncompromising quality and craftsmanship for every room of the home. Today it remains a family owned and operated business, but it has grown exponentially from its beginnings as a custom countertop store to creating custom cabinetry and signage for a variety of industries with work that spans coast to coast in both commercial and residential settings. The company’s newest venture is an innovative design studio, Creative Surfaces Countertops & Tile located on 3012 West 57th Street. According to Marketing Director Denise Pins, “In 2005 we opened our retail showroom the Stone Center on 41st Street. As our retail business continued to grow, we doubled our space with a move to Minnesota Avenue. Then in 2013 we opened the Cambria Gallery two doors down in the same retail center.” She continues, “This is a very exciting move and change for us. Not only are we opening a new and larger retail showroom and Cambria Gallery, but we have also changed the name of our retail showroom. Our core business name has always been Creative Surfaces and this September we officially changed our name from the Stone Center back to Creative Surfaces Countertops & Tile because it says who we are and what we do.”

SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2018

According to Denise, “Our showroom features many different countertop products and tile to fit any budget including quartz, granite, laminate, solid surface and more. We display a wide range of styles and concepts that work together to make any countertop flow beautifully throughout your home. Our showroom is designed to be a relaxing, inviting gallery with a lounge area, fireplace, and large library area showcasing 160 plus Cambria designs.”

What truly makes the gallery unique is that it was designed not merely as a showroom, but as a true workspace. “We encourage businesses and individuals to utilize the space for board meetings, cooking classes and small events. It’s spacious, beautiful and quite comfortable.” Designer Amy Kruetzfeldt shares, “We love the relationships that we build with our customers the most and the idea that our customers trust in us and our experience to help them achieve a space that speaks to who they are and how they live. We work with our customers from the beginning of their project to the end, from designing and assisting in the selection of the product and color that best meets their style, to measuring and finishing with installation. It’s exciting that customers are thrilled with their new countertops and tile.” For clients that prefer professional assistance, Creative Surfaces Countertops & Tile offers complimentary in-home consultation services. ew to The Bridges at 57th & Western, RUST & Co. is a true American classic. Stocking both men and women’s apparel, owners Stacey and Tom Utrera have a combined 30 plus years experience in retail working for Target Corp, Pottery Barn and Old Navy. Having just returned to the Sioux Falls area, Stacey is originally from Dell Rapids. She met Tom, who is from New Jersey, while working for Target Corp. With a penchant for timeless classics, the couple has merged their roots to create a style all their own that they have coined, “Midwest sensibility meets East Coast style.” The couple shares, “RUST & Co. is a modern day apparel retailer rooted in American style. We carry a curated assortment of modern yet timeless clothing and accessories for men and women. We shop the country in search of pieces that embody quality, versatility, comfort and fashion. It is the mix at RUST that sets us apart…we are where weathered meets polished, tom-boy meets sexy, vintage meets modern.”

Designed to create a shopping experience that is engaging, easy, and fun, the Utreras put a lot of thought into the color and finishes as well as the lighting and the layout of the store. Stacey shares, “On top of that, we layered in some unexpected fun elements like a foosball table and a large angel-wings mural that provides for a fun photo-op!” With apparel that is in many ways ageless and “easy,” the Utreras are excited to see friends as well as mothers and daughters shopping together. Tom notes, “And because we carry men’s apparel, we also have couples or families come in together to shop too. There really is something for everyone.” Thrilled to become a member of the Sioux Falls community again, Stacey notes, “We have talked about venturing out on our own for the past ten years and finally decided that the time was right. We have two daughters in elementary school so we knew we wanted to do it in Sioux Falls.” Tom adds, “We love the community and are excited to get to know everyone. We have received so much support from family and friends and the initial reaction to RUST & Co. has been amazing. We are just so excited to be here!” n

According to Mindy, “Our mom Carol Rademacher continued working with us as our President after we purchased the business but will be retiring October 1. She has been the monarch of TMS and we will miss her presence and leadership. She started a wonderful company and we are so honored to build from what she started. Today, TMS is a leading time and attendance dealer with clients all over North America. Mindy shares, “TMS has always offered access control but we recently added video surveillance and alarm to it. In addition to these products, we have created a tmsConneXion application that ties all software together making them work fluidly together.” She continues, “Being able to offer a solution (and a team to support it) that can actually make a difference for a company is rewarding. We aren’t just selling a widget, we are providing an application that gives them time back in their day. We are tracking a company’s largest asset and expense: their employees.” “It is all about the employee experience these days and we offer a solution designed to make it easy on an employee which in turn makes it easier on the employer,” Mindy adds. “As the country continues with the struggle of finding staff, the last thing employers want to worry about is tracking them when they work. We offer something that can put their mind at ease in more ways than one and strive to live up to our business vision: empowering businesses with strategic solutions and unparalleled support.”
