he real Mrs. Santa Claus has seen it all. Her husband meets millions of kids each year and sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it doesn’t. She has a few tips for making your child’s visit with Santa better.

• Bring your child out a couple of times to see Santa or get them to do an actual visit with Santa before you do pictures. Have them wear something comfortable for their first Santa meeting. Kids in uncomfortable outfits are upset even before they get to Santa’s lap. When your child is more comfortable with seeing Santa, you can dress them up for your holiday photo shoot. • Give yourself plenty of time. Rushing creates tension.

What can parents do to prepare their child to meet Santa?

• Consider bringing your child out early in the day when they aren’t tired, keeping in mind that later in the day things become much more hectic and can upset and confuse children.

• Prepare your child for their visit to Santa by reading books to them about Santa. Let them see pictures of Santa or watch movies or cartoons about Santa and his reindeer, elves and helpers.

• Come out early in the season to avoid the long lines. This gives you time to mail your Christmas cards and print more copies of Santa photos. Going earlier in the season also allows Santa to spend more time with your family.

• Before you actually visit with Santa be sure your child has visited the restroom if necessary. For those last minute repairs and accidents bring along a comb or brush, hairspray, moist towelettes, and pins or barrettes for long hair.

• The best photos are taken within the first 15 seconds. If you wish to take a group photo with a baby (6 months or younger), first position the rest of the group and then hand Santa the baby and back away quickly. If you think very young children will be afraid of Santa, hold them facing you with the child’s back to Santa and talk to them calmly before backing away.

• If your child has a last minute flip-out while meeting Santa, there are several things you can try. Perhaps the child will stand next to Santa’s chair. If there is a Mrs. Claus on the set you might ask her to sit with Santa and hold the child. Many times children will go to a woman over a man. The staff may ask you to sit with the child for the photo. Sadly, sometimes nothing works. You may either decide to take the crying photo, many of which have become family classics, or you may decide to try again at another time. • Christmas is for all ages so don’t forget to do family photos and include all generations. These tips were provided by Mrs. Claus, Jeanne Pattison, of Sioux Falls, S.D. She and her husband, Mr. Claus (Bill) travel all over the United States to Santa conventions and are currently with the premier Adventure to Santa, a DreamWorks DreamPlace at the Southwest Plaza Mall in Littleton, Colorado.

The Greatest Gift Books Benefit Children’s Home Society By S.J. Menning

“I

really believe that everything—all of our lives’ experiences—have led us to where we are today,” says Tammy Roberts, a truth truly seen in hindsight. Tammy and her husband Tom released Tom’s fifth book for Children’s Home Society this fall—a success neither would have predicted from where it started nearly 25 years ago during a South Dakota blizzard. Tammy had volunteered to coordinate the children’s Christmas program at their church that year, and was looking to add something extra to fully include the littlest ones. “Tom had been traveling for work and got stranded at the Summit Exit truck stop in a snowstorm,” Tammy recalls, “so I mentioned to him, ‘while you are stuck there, maybe you could write a story for the program.’” Tom’s story, ’Twas the Night Before Christ, was a hit. Word spread and soon churches and radio stations throughout the area wanted to broadcast the story. Eventually, in 2002, a book idea was proposed. “It sounded exciting,” says Tammy, “but we wanted it to be something bigger than ourselves.”

For The Benefit of The Children’s Home Society

Tammy and Tom knew instantly they wanted to use the book to benefit Children’s Home Society, a local organization that provides services to victims of child abuse and domestic violence. “Once we set out to do it, so many people were interested in helping,” says Tammy. They sold 3,000 copies in just 3 weeks. The book has been reprinted multiple times and the project has spurred additional books. The couple has collaborated on Santa’s Prayer, released in 2009, Little Lost Sock in 2011, Return to the Farm in 2013, and now The Greatest Gift, The Wise Ones’ Journey in 2016. Local Artist Jim Brummond has illustrated the past three books. Tom says that Tammy’s marketing background and relationships she has built over the years largely contributes to the success of the books. “It’s fun for me to pull this team together where people can use their expertise,” says Tammy. “And we just have so much support.” Tammy says the book project is really a community effort. While Tammy and Tom may lead the charge, they credit the retailers, churches, organizations, and individuals who support the project for playing an integral role. One hundred percent of the book sales support the programs and services of Children’s Home Society. “The stories are so relatable,” says Tammy. “These aren’t ‘children’s books’—they are family books with a great message. And it’s a unique way for people to help the kids at Children’s Home.” Since 2002, over 50,000 copies of the books have been sold, raising $1.1 million for the organization. Tom explains The Greatest Gift as a poetic take on the gift of the magi and how it applies to us all. Tammy and Tom will be hosting nearly 80 events this fall throughout South Dakota. ayor Mike Huether declared October 24th as World Polio Day for Sioux Falls to bring awareness to this devastating disease. The Rotary Club in Sioux Falls was also recognized at this event for their work to eliminate the disease.

Charlotte Hofer is a member of the Rotary Club and said her membership is personal. “The polio story is important to me because my mother is a polio survivor,” Charlotte says.

Charlotte’s mother, Shirley Hofer, was five years old when she got polio in her left leg. She was in extreme pain and required to stay in bed for several months. Shirley is from the Freeman and Marion area where many other children also contracted polio around the same time as her. The year Shirley had polio, three children in the small community of Freeman died. That’s enough to terrify a community.

“Today, two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, still remain polio-endemic,” Amundson says. “Not all countries are vaccinating their children, as we do here in the United States. That means a child with polio in another country can bring it here.” The lack of vaccinating children can be due to social and religious stigmas as well as ignorance.

“My mom survived polio,” Charlotte says. “Others weren’t so lucky.” Shirley says the disease she had back in 1942 still affects her to this day. Because of the polio, Shirley’s left leg is smaller than her right leg. She still suffers from pain and has insomnia. But Shirley does find a positive from the trial she went through as a child. “It has made me more compassionate toward people with disabilities,” Shirley says. Dr. Paul Amundson, chief medical officer for Dakotacare, says polio was once one of the most feared diseases, with 15,000 cases of paralysis each year in the United States before the polio vaccine was available.

Dr. Amundson says while there is no cure for polio, there is a vaccine to prevent the disease. He says a child not getting vaccinated allows the risk of becoming infected and spreading the disease to others. “Here in the United States and here in Sioux Falls, polio survivors are still dealing with the late effects of polio,” Dr. Amundson says. “The pain often comes back.” Shirley can attest to this as the pain returned, this time in on the right side of her body. However, Shirley looks at her journey and stays thankful. “I am so grateful that my polio was quite mild compared to so many others who survived but suffered life-long crippling, painful conditions,” Shirley says. Filling Her Days With Enthusiasm

aroline has converted one of her bedrooms into what she calls her “activity room.” In it, she has her loom and spinning wheel, her sewing machine, and her computer.

But Caroline’s interests travel way beyond that room. In her parlor, she has a harp; on her wrist, an Apple watch; in her refrigerator, homemade yogurt; and beyond her front door more pursuits. “I feel I’ve been given the enthusiasm for interesting things,” says Caroline. Caroline grew up in Madison County, Iowa, and then attended the University of Iowa, where she met her future husband. After graduating, they moved to his hometown of Canton, South Dakota, about 20 minutes south of Sioux Falls. With her nursing diploma, Caroline sometimes worked in a doctor’s office, but mostly, she devoted herself to being a fulltime mother and wife. She and her husband raised two sons and a daughter.

ith a twinkle and splash, holiday drinks can be the highlight of the party. Like Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas,” people take comfort in old, traditional holiday drinks as well as new, refreshing ones.

Traditional

Tom and Jerry drinks make the top of the list of traditional holiday beverages. They first appeared in Christmas stories and films around 1932. The drink began as a publicity stunt to get people to come to the early 1820s play, Tom and Jerry, or Life in London, by British journalist Pierce Egan. The drink went on to become wellknown in the 1932 holiday story, Dancing Dan’s Christmas, and films, including 1941’s The Great Mr. Nobody, and The Apartment, a 1960 holiday tryst. South Dakota food blogger Fran Hill, said Hot Buttered Rum is her favorite holiday drink. “There is nothing like wrapping my hands around a steaming mug of Hot Buttered Rum as I sit in front of a twinkling Christmas tree to fill me with the warmth and glow of the holiday season,” she said.

Festive Holiday Cheer

Slow-Cooker Hot Buttered Rum from Fran Hill • • • •

2 cups brown sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 sticks cinnamon • 6 whole cloves • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg • 2 quarts hot water • 2 cups spiced rum • fresh nutmeg (grated for garnish) • real whipped cream (Redi-Whip in a can is good for this.)

• Create a cheesecloth sachet for the whole cloves, or use a tea strainer to contain them. • Add all ingredients (except fresh nutmeg for garnish and whipped cream) to a slow cooker. Stir to combine. Cover and cook on high for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Then, turn heat to low and continue to simmer until serving. Serve topped with real whipped cream and grated fresh nutmeg. Keep the bottle of spiced rum on the side for those that like to add a little more kick. Serves 20. Betsey Wick, a veteran Sioux Falls bartender, said the Moscow Mule has become very popular again. In fact, she said, “a true copper cup and the correct makings for it will be the envy gift of everybody who loves holiday mixes.”

Candied Popcorn Stars

Ingredients 1 c. sugar 1/3 c. light corn syrup 1/3 c. water 2 tbsp. butter 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 8 c. Popped Corn 1/3 c. red and/or green nonparells 1/4 c. cinnamon candies Directions Combine sugar and next 3 ingredients in a heavy sauce pan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Increase heat to medium; bring to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until candy thermometer registers 255 degrees F. Remove from heat; stir in salt and vanilla. Quickly pour mixture over popcorn; toss gently to coat. Add nonparells, tossing gently to combine. Moisten or grease hands. Working quickly, press the mixture into 5-inch starshaped cookie cutter. If candied corn becomes too hard to shape, place in a warm (200 degrees F) oven for a few minutes to soften.

Ginger Crinkle Cookies Ingredients 2/3 cup canola oil 1 1/2 cups turbinado sugar, divided (see Tip) 1 large egg 4 tablespoons molasses 2 cups sifted whole-wheat pastry flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 1/4 teaspoons ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon sea salt Preheat oven to 350 Â°F.Mix oil and 1 cup sugar in a large bowl until combined. Beat in egg until combined. Stir in molasses until evenly incorporated. Sift flour, baking

soda, cinnamon, ginger and salt over the wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Put the remaining 1/2 cup sugar in a small bowl. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in the sugar before placing 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Do not flatten.Bake the cookies until set, but still soft when gently touched, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Make Ahead Tip: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Boot Tracks Ingredients 1/2 cup salted butter 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup whole-wheat pastry flour 6 tablespoons cocoa powder 2 tablespoons canola oil 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder, (optional) Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting Preheat a nonstick (not Belgian) waffle iron. Cream butter and sugar in a medium bowl. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, cocoa powder, oil and espresso powder (if using). Beat until thoroughly combined. Drop the batter by rounded teaspoonfuls about 1 inch apart onto the preheated ungreased waffle iron. (To avoid burnt fingers, use two spoons, one to scoop and one to scrape dough onto the waffle iron.) Close and cook until the cookies are puffed and cooked through, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Waffle irons vary, so watch closely and don’t let the cookies get too dark. Transfer to a wire rack to cool until just warm. Dust the cookies with confectioners’ sugar while still slightly warm (see Variations).Variations: Instead of confectioners’ sugar, drizzle cooled cookies with melted bittersweet and/or white chocolate. Or make a peppermint drizzle: Mix 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 4 teaspoons water and 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract; add natural green food coloring, if desired.

rocessed foods tend to get a bad reputation, and often that’s for good reason. Some processed foods aren’t all bad for us—as long as that’s not all we are eating all the time. It’s important to be aware of what we eat because it’s what fuels our bodies, after all. Some processed foods can have health benefits. According to eatright.org, “Milk and juices are sometimes fortified with calcium and vitamin D, and breakfast cereal may have added fiber.” Good processed foods include low- and non-fat milk; whole grain cereals; frozen fruits and vegetables without sugar, syrup, or sauce; dried fruits, oatmeal and whole grain bread; frozen seafood (not breaded); canned salmon and tuna; and roasted nuts and seeds.

Healthy Diet ~ Healthy Life

Highly processed foods contain unhealthy additives and artificial ingredients. They often have high levels of sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Canned options are usually high in sodium, refined carbohydrates, fats, and trans fats. Avoid canned items with high sodium, boxed meals, ready-to-eat shelf-stable meals, packaged cakes and cookies, and high-calorie snack foods like chips and candy. Read the labels on your food items and look over the list of ingredients. Educate yourself on what those mean: you may have to do some research to understand fully what is in your food. Look for canned foods without salt added and fruits in natural juices or water, and try to avoid foods with one of following listed as the first ingredient: sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, monosodium glutamatate. Be aware of hidden trans fats listed as partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, as well as hidden sugar and sodium. Amanda Eben, Hungry for Truth contributor, describes her common-sense, healthy approach to providing meals to her family: When making decisions about food and buying groceries for my family, I like to keep health in mind. I like to have a protein with every meal and also eat lots of fruits and vegetables. We also like to keep everything in moderation. A Customized Kitchen By Stacey Kracht, inSKribe LLC

eSpoke Design Studio and Workshops, which provides luxury home remodels, recently completed a kitchen remodel in a Georgian-inspired Sioux Falls home. Local BeSpoke designer Keith Morgan notes the importance of maintaining the simple, clean feel of the home. For the cabinetry, the homeowner wanted locally sourced material, and Keith wanted to add a level of refinement. Dying the product was the answer: new life was brought to a traditional oak with a silver finish and walnut accents. BeSpoke produces their own sheet goods: “We have the ability to work with wood that’s grown anywhere on the planet.” Creating their own raw materials gives them lots of options; you won’t see that silver oak anywhere else in Sioux Falls. Additionally, the cabinetry is fully motorized: the operator can open upper cabinet doors with a simple touch. Keith’s team provides high-end design and fabrication. BeSpoke designs materials in the same environment they’re crafted in, allowing the design to progress throughout the fabrication process. “Design people often say they wish they could have changed something once it’s built,” Keith explains. “Our process is fluid and allows us to keep developing.”

This particular home is divided into smaller rooms, providing an intimate feel. The entry was small and lacked storage, so the team created a walnut set of cabinets for storing coats and shoes. This free-standing signature piece features raised crescent details on the doors. “We [gave it] more of a furniture feel, rather than a simple extension of kitchen cabinetry,” Keith says. The moldings create a beautiful face and crown that aren’t used elsewhere in the kitchen.

The ceiling features three simple walnut coffers with added delineation in the surface. The counsel on the right wall mixes a furniture piece into the cabinetry for variety. The English sycamore comes from Scotland and is a crisp, light color, contrasting nicely with the silver oak. The countertops were also made of locally available materials – Calcutta by Cambria. The discreet white look differentiates from the rest of the kitchen. German company Blanco was used for the hardware. The knobs on the cabinets have a slight art deco feeling. All the doors on the lower interiors are one-inch thick, solid walnut. BeSpoke takes a space from raw stud to finished product, streamlining the entire process. nergizing espresso-based treats, as well as good oldfashioned black coffee: the love affair with those tiny beans that mean so much is getting stronger every day. Couldn’t you just crush a giant frappe or a big old café mocha right about now? There’s not much that beats a big cupful of your favorite caffeine-laced beverage; it helps you cope, concentrate and celebrate, too. Now that gourmet coffee is everywhere, sometimes it’s easier to down that drink and deny the sugar, calories and fat we can find inside the cup or carafe. We dashed off to a coffee shop with Avera Heart Hospital Dietitian Lauren Cornay, so she could fill us in on the facts. Approaches to what to order vary as much as people do, but there are a few easy things to consider, she said. “Drinking black coffee is pretty safe, but the moment you add cream or milk of any kind, up goes the overall calorie count,” Cornay said. “If you love a latte with whole milk, you’re looking at a 230-calorie drink that packs 8-11 grams of fat.”

That adds up fast if you have one every day on the way to work. You can help yourself by using skim milk, Cornay said, because it’s lower in fat, and the baristas will tell you it makes a better cappuccino, too. “Skim milk tends to froth up better and give a voluminous topping to a drink–more so than its fattier cousins,” she said. “So if you love that heaping hat of foam on top of your drink–stick with skim. Unsaturated “good” fats, like those found in olive oil, nuts and seeds are helpful, but milk has mostly saturated fat, which you should limit in your diet. “Some people aim to avoid this fat with plant-based milks like soy in their coffee creations, but if you do, ask for unflavored soy milk,” said Cornay. “Coffee shops tend to use vanilla soy milk. It’s tasty, but packed with added sugar. There are other milks out there, too, but beware of coconut milk in your coffee. It has some

good nutrients but it’s a high-saturated fat product. Buzz-inducing blender drinks are amazing, but they’re uberindulgent, just in case the mountain of cream inside that plastic dome on the top didn’t give it away, Cornay reminds us. “Most of the mixes that go into ‘frappes’ and other drinks of that ilk are sugar-heavy and hard to justify drinking very often,” she said. “Most of the 16-ounce versions of this drink, at Starbuck’s, Caribou, or even McDonald’s, pack a whopping 500 calories! That drink is giving you 75 grams of sugar and 20 grams of fat. It’s like getting the calories you’d normally get in a full meal. So if they are your favorite, it might be something to save for celebration.” Outside of cream or milk, folks may also add sweeteners to their coffee. “The nutritive sweeteners– honey, sugar, brown sugar–are all about the same. They all add 15 grams of sugar per tablespoon, and your body treats them all the same,” Cornay said. “Non-nutritive or artificial sweeteners are seen by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as helpful for those who seek to cut calories or lose weight.” She said that while that’s the “official word” on artificial sweeteners, Cornay and some of her peers in the world of nutrition and dietetics feel more digging is due. ow do we get the treatments we have today? How do they go from an idea to a patient’s bedside? While there are many steps along the way, one of the most important is the clinical trial phase.

Sometimes called a clinical study, a clinical trial looks for new ways to prevent, detect and treat disease. This is the fastest and safest way to find new treatments and improve the health of everyone. For example, chemotherapy is now the standard treatment for cancer, but before it could become the mainstay of treatment, it was a clinical trial. Today’s clinical trial will be tomorrow’s “gold standard” of care.

What are we looking for? While clinical trials are often associated with the testing of new medicines or devices, they are also used to examine how certain lifestyle changes may help prevent disease. There are also diagnostic and screening studies designed to find better ways to detect disease. Additionally, a clinical trial can be used to examine the quality of life of patients to explore ways to improve their comfort. Clinical trials are used in almost every area of medicine. For example, at Sanford we have more than 300 clinical trials in 15 specialties including cancer, diabetes, women’s health, heart and vascular, infectious disease, orthopedics and genetics.

Who’s in a clinical trial? People enroll in clinical trials for a number of reasons. These studies often provide access to promising new treatments that might make all the difference in their care. Participants may also help researchers and physicians discover more about their specific disease, contributing to finding answers, improving the quality of life for everyone with that disease, and potentially discovering a new way to treat disease. Everyone who signs up for a clinical trial is treated with respect. A primary responsibility of the study staff is to focus on the safety of the participant. In fact, clinical trials are overseen by an Institutional Review Board or ethics board, as well as other committees that are meant to protect the safety and care of participants involved in the clinical trial. This may include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And if at any point a participant wants to leave the clinical trial, they can do so without giving up access to other treatment. How do I find one? While some people think they need to travel for the latest clinical trials, many are actually offered locally. Always check with your physician about your clinical trial options, as there might be open studies for you close to home. You can also log on to clinicaltrials.gov or sanfordhealth.org/clinicaltrials to find a list of clinical trials is offered near you.

asey Olivier plugs in a string of Christmas lights at her Sioux Falls home with a deep appreciation for the holiday—she didn’t have many holidays for more than half of her young life. The young Sioux Falls attorney made partner at the Heidepriem, Purtell & Siegel Law Firm in 2015 and became an equity owner this year. In January the firm will officially change its name to Heidepriem, Purtell, Siegel & Olivier. In the four years Kasey has been in practice she has risen to the top of her field being named a top 40 under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers Association and one of the top 10 female litigators in client satisfaction in the State of South Dakota. There’s no way people who meet Kasey think that she could have ever been anything less than the professional woman she is today. It’s almost impossible to imagine the poised, beautiful young lawyer as a child in need of protective services, placed into foster care, rejected by her family, abused and struggling to survive day by day.

There is something unique about Kasey: some call it passion, others call it drive. Some just puzzle at how she got to where she is today. But Kasey has a deeper understanding of what it takes to not just survive, but to thrive. “It didn’t take long after being put in foster care for me to realize that all the odds were against me. Foster youth are commonly told that they aren’t going to be able to attend college and that they should simply settle for whatever job they can get. Foster youth are immediately stereotyped and given the impression that they don’t quite measure up to kids with normal families,” Kasey said, sadly. She was born into a “picturesque family,” she said, on a farm in Minnesota. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Laughter was the essence of our home.” When she was seven, her father died in a traumatic farming accident. After he died, her life began to change. Slowly at first, but her mother remarried and things took a turn for the worst. It wasn’t long before Kasey was declared a child in need of protective services and the department of social services began abuse and neglect proceedings. “The hardest part of being removed from your home is that people believe that you, as the child, did something wrong,” she said. “When a child is declared a child in need of protective services, it is because their home is unsafe and they need protection from their parents.” Kasey was removed several times from her parents’ home, but when she was placed back the situation would only get worse. Finally, after members of her community began to speak out, Kasey was permanently placed into foster care. It was there that she first learned the gut-wrenching feeling of being alone. “There is no stability in foster care. I was moved from home-to-home as other peoples’ lives changed,” she said. “I had no control over what was happening in my life.” In her senior year of high school, Kasey became tired of the instability in her life, so she began looking for other options. She discovered legal emancipation, which is a route to becoming an independent individual. Kasey filed the legal paperwork and was officially emancipated from foster care in December 2004. “I knew I had to get out and I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, but I never thought it would be as hard as it really was,” she said. “Looking back, I was so young and so lost. I didn’t have a family to help me learn how to be an adult, but somehow I just kept putting one foot in front of the other.” Finally on her own, Kasey moved into a house that she rented. “The house had cockroaches, a broken heater and I slept on a mattress on the floor,” she said. “But I knew if I kept working hard things would get better.”

She attended college classes in her senior year of high school and worked at four jobs nearly 70 hours a week to pay her bills. “I never slept in or took time to relax, I just kept pushing myself,” she said. “During those years, most of the time I was going without food to get by,” she said. “I would have to muster up my pride and frequent the food shelf when things got really bad. One day there was a package of Oreos on the shelf. They told me they were for kids. I wanted those so badly. I wanted those Oreos,” she said with tears in her eyes. Growing up without adults to help her navigate her education, she struggled to figure out how to apply for college. She knew she wanted higher education but the financial aid forms, taxes and applications were overwhelming. Today she’s very grateful for the admissions office at Augustana University. “Admissions there were set up to help. I worked with them and I got in. I started at Augie on time.“I made friends there—people who are lifelong friends.” After her freshman year, a social worker sent her an application for an internship program in Washington D.C. for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, which is a program that works to improve the foster care system nationwide. “As part of the program, I was selected to be Senator Tim Johnson’s intern. I didn’t know anything about the program, where I would live or how I was going to afford to live in Washington for the summer,” she said. “That summer changed my life. Up until that point I didn’t tell people about my past. I hid it really well,” she said. “I came back from that internship and decided I could do something with this.” When fate finally handed her a blessing, it also came with a boyfriend, Ryan Olivier, from Sioux Falls. Ryan and his parents became the first mentors, guides and family she’d had in many years. They helped her make a lot of decisions, including leaving Augustana for a less expensive state college in Minnesota, but with the goal of saving for law school.

Admission to law school wasn’t easy, either, as she wasn’t selected by the University of South Dakota in the first round. “They did accept me in a program called the summer screener program,” she laughed. USD selects 30 students they think have potential to make it in law school and put them to the test all summer long with the top ten students being invited to join the incoming class. Kasey not only made it through the program, but she excelled in law school and graduated with honors. Following graduation, Kasey served as the Second Circuit law clerk, where she worked side-by-side with the judges in Minnehaha and Lincoln County. After completing her clerkship, Kasey joined the Johnson Heidepriem law firm in the summer of 2013. She married Ryan Olivier and his family in August 2013, and helped found the law firm Heidepriem, Purtell and Siegel, where she became a partner after three months. Kasey practices in civil litigation, meaning she is a trial lawyer. “The best part of my job is that I am able to represent seriously injured people. It doesn’t matter if it was in a car accident or because of some other traumatic event. I get to help people. My clients need someone to stand up for them, just like I did so many years ago.” Her passion is also helping kids in foster care. It’s heart breaking to see a kid go through some of the same things she did, she said, but she can relate to them and ease their worries much better than most. When their stories start to bring up those feelings of loneliness and terror from the past, she says she puts it on a shelf. “That’s my shelf. We take it down when it’s appropriate. We don’t dwell on it. You can have a breakdown, but you can’t unpack your things and stay there. You have to move down the road.” Kasey hasn’t let anything in her past hold her back. Beyond being a partner at her firm, Kasey serves on the Board of Governors for the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, will be the Second Circuit Bar President in 2017, recently joined the Admissions Committee at the University of South Dakota School of Law, and serves on the board of governors for the Sioux Falls area CASA. As for the future, “Right now I am doing my best to love every day as it comes.” Her husband Ryan and his parents Orvin and Sharon Olivier have provided Kasey with the family she has always wanted. “Spiritually, emotionally…they loved me as family every step of the way. Every day is an opportunity for me. My childhood was taken from me, I have survived abuse, emotional upheaval and educational disruption, but my pain has turned into compassion and my past desperation inspires my current motivation,” she says. Kasey Olivier is no longer alone. She comes home every day to a loving husband and a sweet, overly excited dog. This Christmas she will eat good food, laugh and embrace her family. She will continue to fight for the people that come to her for help, for those that are hurt, or for the abused children that need a voice in our court system and community.

National Music Museum Acclaimed Museum Exhibits More than 15,000 Instruments Story and Photos by Margaret Pennock

racing the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the National Music Museum (NMM) is a destination for music lovers world-wide. Founded in 1973, the museum houses an incredibly diverse inventory of more than 15,000 instruments, with 1,200 on public display. These range from Italian Renaissance violins to guitars strummed by none other than Elvis. NMM Manager of Communications Patricia Bornhofen adds, “People quickly realize this is not only a musical-instrument museum. It’s a history museum, art museum, science and technology museum, and performing arts center. You can come for an NMM Live! concert, or marvel at the NMM’s Stradivari collection, or discover instrument masterworks you never knew existed. People rarely leave here without expressing awe (and pride) that this is a South Dakota treasure.” According to the New York Times, the NMM is a “musical Smithsonian […] whose galleries teem with masterpieces.” Attracting thousands of visitors every year, the museum features instruments from all cultures and categories. The New York Times called it “one of the largest and most important collections of historical instruments in the world.”
