Unique Picasso

Every opportunity to experience Picasso’s works up close is a once-in-a-lifetime event. It’s no surprise that his masterpieces adorn major museums worldwide. Although I’ve seen much of his work, there are always favorites I eagerly anticipate, such as "La lecture de la lettre" (1921). On my upcoming trip to Milan, I’ll finally be able to admire it in person.

The exhibition "Picasso the Stranger" at "Palazzo Reale" focuses on the painter’s life as a "stranger" in France, where he lived and worked for over six decades, carving his own circle of friends and admirers in an often-hostile environment.

Arti et Amicitiae, Rokin 112, 1012

If not for Max Brod, we might never have known the works of Franz Kafka. The renowned Germanspeaking author had instructed that all his writings be destroyed upon his death, but fortunately, his close friend ignored this request. Brod took it upon himself to preserve and publish Kafka's manuscripts, allowing the world to discover masterpieces like "The Metamorphosis" and "The Trial". Now, 100 years after Kafka’s passing, an exhibition in Amsterdam showcases the influence of his work on the visual arts. Don't miss this unique tribute, open until January 10, 2025.

Whenthe nights get cold, nothing beats a warm soup and grilled meat! That’s my winter comfort, and that’s why I recommend ''Vrasto'', with its warm, welcoming decor, offering both of my favorite dishes. I recommend the velvety pumpkin soup with ginger, served with strained yogurt, as well as traditional options like chicken soup, hearty beef soup made from blade cuts, and the highly nutritious tripe, which I absolutely love! For grilled dishes, try the tomahawk steak or the tender beef steak served with basmati rice or roasted baby potatoes. Or, for a heartier option, go with golden, crispy fries!

It tempts even those who aren’t seafood enthusiasts. TThe irresistible aroma that has captivated people for centuries - from King George I to Agatha Christie...

he darker the English pudding, the more authentic and aromatic it becomes. And take note: it has nothing to do with Italian panettone, despite the common confusion. Whether topped with a sprig of mistletoe for festive cheer (and good luck) or served plain, English pudding is the perfect winter dessert. It pairs perfectly with a steaming cup of hot tea or a fine brandy. In other words, enjoy it while it's cold.

Once prepared, the pudding is kept hidden in a cupboard for several months. It’s here that it develops its signature brown-to-black color, a process steeped in legend, with some claiming the secret lies in the nearly year-long preparation. The dish’s history traces back to the 14th century, where its early versions consisted of wheat porridge (or gruel), meat, raisins, red wine, and spices. Over time, cooks added new ingredients like nuts, which were initially soaked in pork or goose fat to intensify the flavor. However, the key ingredient that transformed its original profile was dried fruit, which led to its popularity at Christmas. The dish was eventually banned, deemed "sinful" by some, but was later revived by King George I, an ardent fan. Over the years, the recipe evolved, with today’s essential ingredientcognac- making the pudding truly flambé. And for those who enjoy a good detective story, take a trip into Agatha Christie’s "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding". In this mystery, Miss Marple investigates a case at Greenshaw Manor...

Η Πράγα τα έχει όλα Prague has it all

A city that’s both fairytale-like and underground, eccentric yet romantic - Prague truly has it all. The capital of the Czech Republic enchants with its dark fairy tales, exceptional beer and cuisine, mist-covered streets, charming bars, and countless hidden gems...

Discovering

In the Old Town Square, crowds gather to watch the giant hand of the Astronomical Clock strike twelve. At the top of the clock, built in 1410, the parade of the Twelve Apostles begins, resembling a medieval puppet show. Last, Charon rings his bell, tipping an hourglass to remind us of time’s relentless march. “What are you waiting for?” he seems to say. “There’s much more to see.”

Prague is a city that thrives on contrasts- eccentricity, black humor, dark fairy tales, and surprising contradictions. Its Central Gallery sits just steps away from the Museum of Medieval Torture. The city initially deceives with its colorful pastel buildings, making every street a lesson in European architectural styles: Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau, and eclecticism. But it’s only when you explore its less touristy neighborhoods that you truly understand Prague. The quieter, more industrial areas, filled with vibrant cultural activity, is where Prague’s true spirit comes alive.

PRAGUE

Neighborhoods and art

Like Paris, Prague is divided into numbered districts (1 to 22), helping you navigate the city. Prague 1 is the starting point, where every journey begins. It is home to the medieval Old Town, the iconic Prague Castle - one of the world’s largest castles - and the aristocratic Mala Strana, a Baroque district at the castle’s base. In Mala Strana, you’ll find the Kafka Museum, dedicated to one of Prague’s most famous residents, Franz Kafka, born here in July 1883.

The Vltava River (known as Moldava in Greek) separates the Old Town from Mala Strana. The legendary Charles Bridge, built in 1357 and adorned with 30 Baroque statues, connects the two districts. Walking across the bridge at dawn, with the illuminated castle in the distance and mist rising from the river, is a truly unforgettable experience. Legend has it that touching the statue of St. John of Nepomuk on the bridge ensures your return to Prague.

/ THE LEGENDARY CHARLES BRIDGE, BUILT IN 1357 AND ADORNED WITH 30 BAROQUE STATUES

Continuing through the districts, Prague 2 is the New Town - though don’t be deceived by the name, it’s not that new. Dating back to the 14th century, this area is home to the iconic Dancing House by architect Frank Gehry and the National Museum of the Czech Republic, boasting over 14 million exhibits spanning history, culture, art, and the natural world. Also in Prague 2 is Vysehrad, with its imposing 10th-century castle, the second, quieter castle of Prague.

Prague 3 is Zizkov, where the city’s true spirit lives. Often called the "Free Republic of Zizkov", this neighborhood feels like the heart of any future revolution. It’s gritty, industrial,

and filled with colorful graffiti, political posters, and slogans painted on walls. The area’s not known for its beauty, but it is home to some of Prague’s most exciting bars, art spaces, and clubs. The historic "Palac Akropolis" (27 Kubel íkova 1548, Praha 3) is a perfect example, combining all of these elements. For art lovers, be sure to visit the “MeetFactory” (Ke Skl árnê 3213/15, Praha 5), the modern art venue by the Czech artist David Černý. Located in Sm íchov (Prague 5), it houses contemporary art exhibitions, a theater, a club, a concert hall, a café, and a bar. Meanwhile, in Hole šovice (Prague 7), the “Cross Club” (Plýnárn í 23, Praha 7) is another unique cultural hub. Made entirely from machine parts - pistons, cylinders, and engines repurposed as tables, lighting fixtures, and wall art - this venue hosts concerts, theater performances, a café, a club, and a restaurant.

Hole sovice is also home to Letna, one of Prague's seven green hills, which offers stunning views of the city. At its peak stands a giant metronome, a symbol of time’s fleeting nature. The metronome replaced a massive statue of Stalin, which was once the largest in Eastern Europe. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Czechs erected the metronome as a reminder that time must never be wasted again.

HERAKLION-CHANIA

Once you arrive at Heraklion Airport the most alternative road trip of the season begins – a trip full of flavor, tradition and natural beauty

ROAD

VIEW OF THE VENETIAN PORT ΚΝΩΣΣΟΣ / KNOSSOS

What draws you to Crete is its aura: the tradition, the Cretan lyre, the food, the temperament of the people and the changing landscapes, which travel both mind and body. In the winter, everything changes color on the island and the sound of the waves becomes the background music for your strolls. Hop in a car and get ready for an exciting road trip with two landmark stops: Heraklion and Chania.

First stop: Heraklion

After landing at Heraklion Airport ‘‘Nikos Kazantzakis’’ you’ll need a few minutes to reach the city center. The pedestrianized center offers you the chance to walk and wind down after the trip. Daidalos Street is one of the most commercial streets of Heraklion. You can visit it for shopping and a coffee in hand, while admiring the architecture of the buildings. You must make a stop at the Morosini Fountain - popularly called ‘‘Fountain of Lions’’or ‘‘The Lions». The impressive fountain adorns the square and is surely worth a photo. There you can also enjoy a bougatsa (Greek pastry with semolina custard) with a view, since you can admire the Lions right from the ‘‘Phyllosophies’’coffee shop. Try the bougatsa with traditional myzithra (Greek whey cheese or mixed milk-whey cheese from sheep or goats) and Cretan thyme honey and walnuts. All kinds of delicious food for both sweet and salty lovers will be found at ‘‘Phyllosophies’’.

Eleftheria Square hosts the impressive building of the Prefecture and the cafes that just call out and invite you to try hot beverages. Locals, students and visitors keep the city alive. You’ll surely be captivated by the beauty of the Venetian Harbor with the imposing Koules Fortress, built by the Venetians in the 16th century. Walk or cycle around the Venetian walls that border the old town. Almost 15 km outside the city of Heraklion is the CretAquarium, a modern aquarium of European standards. The whole seabed stretches out right before your eyes, while the playful sunlight makes the sight even more impressive. You can also go during the hours when the divers are cleaning, checking the 60 tanks and feeding the fishes. The ticket price is 8 euros.

Lovers of ancient Greek history and Minoan culture should visit Knossos, an imposing archaeological site almost 15 minutes away from the center of Heraklion. According to tradition, it was the palace of King Minos and is associated with many myths. The first excavations were carried out in 1878 by Minoas Kalokairinos from Heraklion. The excavations conducted by the Englishman Sir Arthur Evans (1900-1913 and 1922-1930) followed and revealed the entire palace. A well-kept, deeply historical place that will reveal the Minoan culture to you. Entrance begins from 18 euros.

With a view of the endless blue

If you want a hotel with a view that will remain indelibly etched in your memory, then book a room at ‘‘Acro Suites’’. This is an adults only resort in the area of Agia Pelagia. It includes four villas, 47 suites, two restaurants, a bar, a spa and two gyms, offering the ultimate experience of peace and mental balance. The sound of the sea alone is enough to awaken all the senses.

The average price per night starts from 350 euros. ‘‘Peskesi’’ represents the whole philosophy of Cretan cuisine, based on sustainability and Cretan taste. It is a peaceful space in the heart of a restored mansion. The stone and wood of the restaurant are blended with the aromas of the kitchen. You will not only eat well at this restaurant, but you will also understand what it means to respect the raw materials and resources of the island. Try the Cretan kayana or poached eggs, the dako that will melt in your mouth and the restaurant’s meats. Don’t forget to try the traditional Greek liquers, tsikoudia and rakomelo. Price range is between 5 to 40 euros.

Second stop: Chania

After a two-hour drive you’ll arrive at the equally magical Chania. The people, the picturesque cobblestone streets of the city and the rhythm of the island draw you into the fascinating atmosphere that is created there in the spring. Take a stroll through the Venetian Harbour, a much-photographed magic spot in the city, adorned with a lighthouse. You must see the sunset from that point since the colors of the sky become one with the sea and forms an image that is magical.

‘‘PALLAS CHANIA’’

Continuing your walk, you’ll find the walls of the Firkas Fortress, built by the Venetians to protect the entrance to the port. Walk through the vertical alleys to reach the center. Here, Cretan, Ottoman and Venetian elements are mixed together and architecturally compose the center of Chania. See Neoria, the Maritime Museum of Crete, the Küçük Hasan Pasha Mosque or Giali Jamisi, Splantzia square with the church of Agios Nikolaos with the bell tower and Kastelli hill, which looks like an extension of the port. Pass by the Municipal Market to see the “marriage” of old and modern. Although the market has kept its character, it now also hosts many souvenir shops. For a panoramic view and a connection with history visit the Venizelos Tombs. church covering the area. The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the area of Halepa and hosts some 3,500 exhibits from prehistoric and historical times. An iconic building with three rooms on the ground floor and one on the first floor, it houses the rich archaeological heritage of Chania. Take a stroll through the neighborhood of Halepa, known for its aristocratic aura and beautiful mansions. There are also the Tanneries, which for more than two centuries was the place where the tanneries of Chania operated.

Palaces and souvlaki

At ‘‘Pallas Chania’’, the food and the view create a different feeling. Three floors are enough to get to know the Mediterranean, and Cretan cuisine that dominates the menu. The interior of the first floor offers a unique view of the harbor and the lighthouse through its large windows and balconies. On the other hand, Crete has its own souvlaki, a little different from the others. It’s worth a try as it’s been around since 1966. Pure ingredients and not ordinary. Yogurt and not sauce, onion, tomato, meat, and lots of paprika. ‘‘Oasis’’ is not the place to sit down, but to take the souvlaki to go.

Time to rest

Take a detour and visit Crete’s only natural freshwater lake, Kournas. Myths, beauty and nature make up a unique puzzle, which is completed with its crystal clear waters. An important wetland, the area is protected by the Natura 2000 network. Visit ‘‘Casa Delfino’’, a 17th century Venetian mansion with 24 luxurious rooms and suites that is a few minutes from the center. Classic and modern, past and present alternate and compose a very special space. It’s only minutes away from the cosmopolitan city centre. Have in mind that all the above is only the beginning of your acquaintance with this destination, which is sure to captivate you! •

CHOCOLATE winter story...

From the interwar years to the present day, and from Grace Kelly to Queen Sofia of Spain, FLY Magazine explores the warm embrace of Athens’ most historic chocolate shop, uncovering its rich history and delightful secrets

OUR GREAT-GRANDFATHER CAME TO ATHENS AND OPENED HIS FIRST PASTRY SHOP IN 1928. IT WAS A TRADITIONAL SHOP, OFFERING PASTRIES AND CAKES BASED MAINLY ON FRENCH RECIPES

Οδός

Voulis Street, No. 7. This is the address of "Aristokratikon", Athens’ iconic chocolate shop, renowned for its exquisite flavors and long-standing tradition. The rich, intoxicating aroma of chocolate wafts all the way to the street, catching the attention of passersby, who glance at the queues forming outside the shop. In the window, a wide array of handmade chocolates catches the eyes of both Athenians and tourists, who flock from every corner of the city -and even the worldto try them... and enjoy them again and again.

Inside, Thomas Bitsopoulos, who owns the historic shop with his brother Periklis, shares their story. The brothers represent the fourth generation of a family whose confectionery tradition dates back to 1928 - and even earlier.

We head upstairs to his office above the Voulis Street shop to explore the history of a family that began its journey with chocolate in 1928 and, more than a century later, remains committed to traditional recipes. He offers us some exquisite pralines, champagne truffles, and dark chocolate with orange, creating a chocolatey atmosphere for our conversation. His captivating narration takes us through time: “I have the honor of being the fourth generation in the history of ‘Aristokratikon’, and the sixth generation in our family’s pastry-making tradition.”

Discovering

Πίσω

Back in 1870…

The story begins in Epirus, in the province of Pogoni. His great-grandmother’s family owned a pastry shop in Ioannina, once called "Evropaiko" (European). “This was in 1870, during Turkish rule, as Ioannina wasn’t liberated until 1912. Our great-grandfather moved to Athens and opened his first pastry shop in 1928. It was a traditional shop, with pastries and cakes mainly based on French recipes. He had the foresight to invest in chocolate, a rarity in Greece at the time and not very popular. And then, in the interwar years, my great-grandfather specialized in chocolate, creating amazing recipes we still use today, unchanged. The tastes of that era remain timeless! Grandfather always insisted on using pure ingredients - and that’s what we do, too.”

The "Aristokratikon" workshop has always been located on Lycabettus Hill, the site of the family’s great-grandfather’s house. "We face many challenges because the building is neoclassical and old, which raises some issues due to its age. But we enjoy working with the 'ghost' of my great-grandfather,” he says, laughing.

Thomas Bitsopoulos doesn’t consider himself a businessman, but a confectioner. He is deeply involved in production and begins each day in the workshop. He insists on using human hands and pure ingredients, rejecting industrialized methods to maintain quality and ensure the balance of taste remains intact. Each chocolate is crafted to be unique, as the secrets of proportions and mixtures are passed down reverently through the generations. He shares that they still weigh their recipes with traditional okadas (manual scales). "I tried switching to grams, but it didn’t work," he laughs. "It must be the 'ghost' of my grandfather," he jokes, while adding that the business does use digital scales for newer recipes introduced in later years. “The first store opened on the corner of Voukourestiou and Stadiou. In 1960, we moved a bit closer to number 6 on Voukourestiou. In 1994, we relocated to Karageorgis Street, and since 2012, we’ve been at our current location on Voulis Street. Our second store in Kifissia has been operating since 1984. I must also mention that our store has never closed, not during World War II or the Junta. In 1939, 'Aristokratikon' was

awarded the Gold Medal at the International Industrial and Specialized Confectionery Exhibition in Athens.”

As Thomas shares details about his accolades and international clientele, we flip through a photo album of celebrities, including Grace Kelly enjoying caramelized peanuts. Jackie Kennedy preferred rose-scented Turkish delights, Maria Callas loved ground pistachios, and Queen Sofia of Spain opted for mint leaves.

“Today we have loyal customers from the United States, Israel, Arab countries, and Europe. I’m always humbled when Europeans, especially from chocolate-rich countries like France, tell me they love my chocolates,” he says with evident pride.

Among the cities Thomas Bitsopoulos has visited for business, Ghent stands out for its skilled chocolatiers and their handmade chocolates. “We travel to chocolateproducing countries to taste and observe what our colleagues in Belgium and France are making. We influence each other,” Thomas says. “The Swiss are known for their milk chocolate, not because they have cocoa trees, but because they have the finest milk from free-range cows in the Alps. Similarly, we have the best nuts and fruits in the world. We collaborate with select Greek estates and producers to ensure the finest ingredients, including chestnuts, almonds, plums, sour cherries, hazelnuts, and pistachios." He continues, “The French and Belgians have better marketing, and industrialization has also played a role. For example, Fauchon and Maxim were once groundbreaking, but they have since become industrialized. Personally, I prefer to keep things family-owned, even if I don’t have ten stores in Athens or sell in supermarkets.”

When asked about his favorite chocolate dessert, he shares, “Right now, it’s the champagne truffle. Though this changes occasionally - just recently, I loved the three almonds in milk chocolate.”

As we prepare to leave, I ask, “What’s it like living among chocolates?” He smiles, surrounded by cocoa truffles and chocolate masterpieces. “Bittersweet, just like chocolate itself,” he replies. •

/ PANORAMIC VIEW OF TIRANA – ON THE RIGHT IS THE LARGEST MOSQUE IN THE BALKANS

Upon first visit, Tirana greets you with open public spaces, wide sidewalks, a safe network of bike paths, and many green areas. In recent years, the Albanian capital has managed to put its political past behind and continues to climb the ranks as one of the Balkans’ favorite cities.

Tirana embraces its rich, often turbulent history, but today it’s a thriving city full of life, and increasingly a top choice for city tourism.

With youthful energy, friendly residents, and a desire for fun and sites, the city is constantly evolving. Following its titles as European Youth Capital and European City of Sport, Tirana has been designated the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2025.

Architecturally, the city blends historic monuments, museums, and the National Gallery with modern buildings featuring glass facades and expansive windows. Tirana’s city center is just 11 kilometers from "Mother Teresa" Airport (named after the Albanian-born Catholic nun), a trip that takes around 30 minutes (depending on traffic) and costs about 18 euros.

Strolls, Strolls, Strolls...

In Tirana, everything begins at Skënderbej Square, one of the largest public squares in Europe, spanning 40,000 square meters. It’s easily accessible by bus or taxi, and relatively affordable compared to other cities.

A great place to start your day is “505 Café”, located just off the

main square. The café feels like home, with photos and artwork adorning the walls, evoking a sense of warmth and familiarity. Served in charming porcelain cups, it feels like an afternoon spent at grandma’s house, where you can relax and enjoy a good book. From there, take a short walk to the center of Skënderbej Square, which is paved with natural stones from across Albania. At the heart of the square stands the statue of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, Albania's national hero who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire. From there, follow the massive mosaic depicting the history of Albania, which leads you to the Museum of National History. This three-story museum, located in the city center, offers a comprehensive overview of the country’s struggle for independence and its history up to World War II.

Surrounding Skënderbej Square are significant landmarks such as the Palace of Culture, the opera house, the National Library, and a mosque dating back to 1794. If you’re visiting in the first days of February, you might even catch a musical theater performance like "Chicago" at the “Pallati Kongreseve”.

Food, drink, aesthetics...

The Clock Tower, built in 1822, is an unmissable sight, standing at 35 meters tall. It’s illuminated at night and open to the public, offering panoramic views of the city. During the day, buses depart from there to take you to the cable car station for Mount Dajti, a scenic journey that offers a great overview of Tirana in just 15 minutes.

Before continuing your sightseeing, a stop at the charming “Sophie” is highly recommended. With its cozy ambiance, friendly staff, and delightful coffee, it’s a perfect place to unwind. The ceiling, beautifully painted, is worth a look. Dominating the south of Tirana is the Great Park, built around an artificial lake in the 1950s. This park, a favorite spot for young locals, is home to the Church of Saint Prokopios, the Presidential Palace, and several monuments honoring Albania’s national heroes. Nearby is “Mullixhiu”, a traditional Albanian restaurant with a modern twist. It sources ingredients from small local farms and serves authentic dishes like homemade meatballs, beef cheeks, and the beloved chicken rosnica.

To truly experience a city, there’s no better way than getting lost in its narrow streets, discovering hidden gems along the way. However, a major thoroughfare is Murat Toptani Street,

GEORGE LIOUMPIS

“WE CONTINUE TO LEAD IN INNOVATION”

Innovation Award (2024)

The vice president of the Board of Directors of SKY express, speaks to FLY Magazine about the airline’s remarkable growth in the field of innovation, as it celebrates being awarded the ERA Innovation Award for the second consecutive year (2024)

Innovation

At SKY express headquarters at Athens International Airport, we sat down with George Lioumpis, the vice president of the Board of Directors of SKY express, to discuss the company’s impressive growth. A leader in innovation, SKY express has once again been recognized with the Innovation Airline Award (2024) by the European Regions Airline Association (ERA).

SKY express’s remarkable growth is widely recognized. To what do you attribute this success, and how do you plan to sustain it?

We believe the success of SKY express stems from multiple factors: consistency, methodical planning, and efficiency. Our team has worked tirelessly, demonstrating dedication and a keen focus on detail. Additionally, significant investments in recent years, such as equipping our fleet with state-of-the-art engines that excel in minimizing emissions and noise levels, have played a crucial role.

Teamwork always leads to success

Another key element is the opportunity we’ve provided passengers to compare products, prices, and services - an innovative approach for the Greek aviation sector. Connectivity between destinations has also played a major role in serving all passengers, including specific groups such as students and teachers, through tailored packages designed to meet their needs. Furthermore, our success is driven by the reliability and frequency of our routes, for both new and established destinations. Another key factor in our success is the human-centered approach adopted by all our staff. From the booking process to ground services at the airport and in-flight experiences, we aim to offer comfort combined with a friendly face.

What does receiving another ERA Innovation Award (2024) mean to SKY express?

We recently had the honor of receiving this prestigious award. This marks the second consecutive year that SKY express has been recognized for its innovation by an organization representing numerous distinguished European airlines competing for such accolades. Being acknowledged for our innovation two years in a row is truly honoring for us. This award is a testament to the fact that teamwork leads to success. However, what truly matters is sustaining excellence - and we’ve achieved that by earning this recognition for the second year in a row. What makes your company stand out in innovation?

Innovation is a unique concept. It encompasses both breakthroughs and fresh ideas. At SKY express, we believe we embody both aspects. Our dynamic expansion into new routes and destinations was, in itself, a groundbreaking achievement at a European level. We offer passengers more options to reconnect with loved ones, explore favorite destinations, or take repeated business trips. How do we achieve this? By operating the youngest and most modern fleet in Greece and employing

highly skilled colleagues and partners across every touchpoint of the travel chain. We also redefine innovation as more than just technology. Innovation broadens horizons- it transcends and extends beyond technology. What role does technology play in your company, and how does its application enhance the travel experience?

The preparation for each flight involves multiple stages, with technology at its core. At SKY express, we ensure our colleagues have access to tools that streamline the passenger journey. We utilize the most advanced systems in the industry and continue to invest in new technologies. Additionally, we are developing AI-powered systems, prioritizing safety, consistency, and efficiency. These advancements benefit both our passengers and employees, enhancing the overall travel experience.

What about passenger safety? How do you evaluate new technologies?

We also program new systems using AI technology, with safety as our top priority

Our focus starts with our fleet - it is the newest and most modern, serving as the foundation for enhanced safety both on the ground and in the air. Technology is integral to SKY express’s operations at every level, particularly in safety, where prevention plays a key role. Specialized software enables the immediate transmission of data, whether during flight or on the ground. Additionally, we rely on the cooperation of our highly trained staff, ensuring every situation is managed according to the highest safety protocols to protect our passengers. What are the company’s future plans for innovation? Modernization is synonymous with innovation. We have laid the groundwork for a brighter future in European aviation. We remain dedicated to our goals of enhancing the passenger experience throughout their journey. We are taking steady steps and, most importantly, staying consistent. SKY express will continue to be a pioneer in innovative products and services, as we have already demonstrated. •

SAVING POSIDONIA: VODAFONE FOUNDATION’S MISSION TO PROTECT GREECE’S VITAL SEAGRASS MEADOWS TO

Posidonia, a unique species of seagrass found only in the Mediterranean, forms vibrant underwater meadows that resemble seaweed.

These lush meadows serve as a vital refuge for more than 1,400 marine species, preserving the biodiversity of Greece’s underwater landscapes. In addition to protecting marine life, Posidonia meadows play a crucial role in purifying the marine ecosystem by clearing water turbidity, recycling nutrients, and producing oxygen-up to 24 tons annually. Remarkably, they absorb carbon dioxide 15 times more effectively than the Amazon’s terrestrial forests.

Unfortunately, Posidonia meadows are under threat from overfishing, mooring, and pollution. If damaged, their growth is painstakingly slow, taking approximately 100 years to grow horizontally one to ten meters. Recognizing the urgent need to protect the environment, the Vodafone Foundation has committed itself to the conservation of Posidonia through awareness and direct action.

AN INITIATIVE BY THE VODAFONE FOUNDATION IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF PATRAS

In partnership with the Oceanus Lab at the University of Patras, and with the support of Vodafone’s advanced technology, the Vodafone Posidonia program launched in September 2023. This initiative focuses on systematically mapping key areas of the Aegean Sea to help protect these vital underwater habitats. Led by Professor Giorgos Papatheodorou, professor in Environmental and Geological Oceanography and director of the Oceanus Lab, the team has used state-of-theart equipment to map over 325,000 acres of seabed. To date, they have identified 97,000 acres of Posidonia meadows across seven islands, including Syros, Paros, Antiparos, Despotiko, Mykonos, Delos, and Rineia.

The Vodafone Foundation has also launched an informative platform, posidonia.vodafone.gr, to raise awareness and educate the public about Posidonia. This platform invites everyone to become citizen scientists, offering simple ways to contribute to scientific knowledge and support conservation efforts.

MARIA NAFPLIOTOU

Acclaimed Greek actress Maria Nafpliotou opens up to FLY Magazine about her new role in the play "The Cape". We journey with her to the stage, explore the essence of psychotherapy, and visit some of her favorite European cities…

“ ”

Acting was an outlet for me to channel my creativity

Maria Nafpliotou is a performer who transforms on stage. After the tremendous success of the play "Master Class", where she portrayed Maria Callas, and her two-year run in "Filoumena Martourano", she returns this year as the lead in "The Cape" (To Akrotiri), directed by Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos, at the Ilisia Theater.

A passionate theater artist, Nafpliotou also captivates on film. Constantly raising the bar in both her professional and personal life, she continues to evolve. We caught up with her to discuss her role as Juliana in "The Cape" and had an insightful conversation about theater and life.

You started as a dancer. Looking back, could you have pursued a career as a dancer?

I transitioned into acting because I was concerned about the fact that a dance career can be short-lived. I didn't feel I had the talent to become a choreographer, and teaching didn’t quite fulfill me. I loved the stage, though. From a young age, around my twenties, I began wondering what my next step would be. And so, I was given the opportunity with acting. Acting was an outlet for me to channel my creativity into a space that expresses itself in the same way, that is, performatively, on stage. Are there similarities between acting and dancing? Absolutely! Both are about being on stage. While I am more

of a theater actor, there are differences too. In dance, I communicated through my body and the technique I was using, but with acting, I had to manage my speech - something completely different. However, the experience of being exposed to the audience is the same.

Do the successes of recent years provide a sense of certainty for each new performance?

Psychotherapy helps you get to know yourself “

Success, when it comes, is a great blessing. However, in reality, it offers no certainty. When preparing for a new play and a new role, you experience the same insecurities. What experience gives you is the ability to better manage your stress and anxiety. It teaches you patience and reminds you that, if you work hard and well with the director and your colleagues, things will eventually fall into place as they should. This is what experience gives you. Because when faced with a new role, you still encounter the same insecurities. No matter how much you’ve worked or trained your expressive skills, you’re completely defenseless in front of the new character you’re portraying. It's like starting from scratch in uncharted waters, without any protective shield. In the play “The Cape”, you portray Juliana, a woman suffering from loss of consciousness. Tell us about this role. What’s wonderful about Juliana is that, despite battling the most difficult challenges, she keeps moving forward. This resilience is what makes her story both beautiful and moving. Love also plays a significant role in her life. The play explores the loss of memory, consciousness, people, and self. In the end, the light she leaves behind is about our incredible ability to move on, to survive, and to accept. And when we are loved, it becomes a great source of strength. The care, in other words, to move forward and keep going. How important is the surrounding environment in her effort?

She is surrounded by people who care for her - there’s a supportive environment. But ultimately, it’s about her. Despite the mourning, she finds a way to stand on her own and accept her situation. She says, “This is

me, even though I don’t know who I am anymore”. Once you can accept your reality and articulate it - no matter how painful - it becomes possible to move forward. Were there any difficulties in approaching this role?

The challenge in every role is to understand, with the director’s guidance, the context and find the necessary steps to take. Acting is about being able to describe, highlight, and present things that have nothing to do with you personally. The challenge in every role is figuring out how to navigate the character’s journey and, together with your director, create a map. It’s much like a map of the Earth. No matter how well you know it, if you set sail across the Atlantic, you might not end up in New York but you could end up lost or stranded.

You have mentioned that you have been undergoing psychotherapy for years. Is this a way to get to know yourself and learn to manage certain situations better?

I enjoy opening my window to see the sea

It is the only way. Psychotherapy is indeed a way to know yourself better. The external world doesn’t change - challenges and injustices persist, as do the moments of happiness we experience. When we’re trapped within our own problems, we can’t connect with others or life. We struggle to be happy, to discuss or be honest. Psychotherapy helps you express discomfort or dissatisfaction without offending others, take responsibility for your actions, and face difficulties with resilience. Life is tough for everyone, but instead of asking "why me?", we must ask, "What can I do now?" That’s how you find a solution. For me, psychotherapy - getting to know and connect with myself - has been the greatest gift I’ve ever given myself.

You were born and raised in Athens. Would you say you enjoy the fast-paced rhythm of city life?

I was born in Makrygianni, under the Acropolis, and lived there until I was 8 years old. We then moved to Paleo Faliro. Though people often ask about living so far from the center, it’s not far at all. I love Athens, but I also ap-

preciate the openness that the sea offers me. Since I work in the city center, I enjoy opening my window to see the sea - it feels like an escape.

So, I’m assuming you’re one of those people who "die" to travel?

Traveling is my greatest passion! Unfortunately, I don’t have much free time, so I usually plan trips during Holy Week when the theaters are closed.

Have you traveled to distant destinations?

The furthest trip I’ve taken was to Peru. However, I don’t have an extensive list of faraway destinations. I’ve traveled extensively around Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa. What is your favorite European city?

Paris was my first great love, but when I met Rome, I found myself torn between the two. Paris or Rome? Rome or Paris? I’ve also lived in Milan for a while due to work, and over time, I’ve come to appreciate it as a beautiful city. •

MULTI CULTI CITY

We fly to Tbilisi, a city of picturesque narrow streets, striking architecture, and charming traditional shops, all radiating a welcoming atmosphere. From Freedom Square, Tbilisi's most central spot crowned by Saint George’s golden statue, to the Narikala Fortress...

Relaxing in a private room at the Orbeliani Baths in Tbilisi, I can’t help but imagine the countless conversations that have unfolded here - shared by locals and literary greats like Alexander Pushkin, Alexandre Dumas, and Anton Chekhov.

These historic baths in the Abanotubani district are celebrated for their sulfur-rich waters, known for rejuvenating qualities, as well as their unique architecture and superior services. Their charm has captivated renowned writers and visitors alike.

When planning my visit, a friend who had lived in Tbilisi for years urged me to begin my journey with the baths. Rooted in the city's history, they provide a perfect introduction to Tbilisi while offering a peaceful escape from the fast pace of life. Orbeliani was the perfect choice, but the neighborhood, with its cobblestone streets and vibrant balconies, has plenty of bathhouses to suit every preference. The thermal springs here are why the city exists. Legend has it that King Vakhtang Gorgasali’s falcon fell into one of these hot springs, uncovering their hidden riches. Inspired, the king founded the city in the 5th century, naming it Tbilisi, derived from the Georgian word “tbili” (hot). Even today, the sulfur baths remain a cultural hub for locals and an unforgettable experience for tourists.

Tbilisi is a city of many districts, but the Old Town remains the heart of its charm. For accommodation close to the action, ideal selections include places built near cafes, restaurants, and co-working spaces. "Stamba", housed in the impressive former Georgian printing house, and "Rooms", which was our choice. This boutique hotel, designed in an industrial style, is housed in a distinctive Soviet-era building and offers all the modern comforts. If you prefer larger hotel options, consider "Paskunji Residence", "Artists Residence in Tbilisi", "Hotel Residence Plaza", or "Boutique Hotel Ibis Styles Tbilisi Center" for an excellent stay.

The Old Town of Tbilisi is deeply rooted in its past, with well-preserved houses on cobbled streets and wooden balconies featuring intricate carvings that travel visitors back in time. The cafes and small traditional shops create a welcoming atmosphere, and the locals greet you with smiles as if you're an old friend. The influence of Arabs, Turks, and Russians is visible throughout the city’s some 30 neighborhoods, with Abanotubani being the most famous. That’s where we made our first stop for lunch, as Tbilisi is not only known for its contrasts but also for its exceptional wine and cuisine. At the restaurant "Maspindzelo", near the Abanotubani baths, you can savor khinkali, Georgia's national dish, which is similar to

dumplings filled with meat and spices or a potato in a more vegan version. Don't miss the khachapuri, a cheesy bread flavored with tarragon, paired perfectly with a local wine.

After our brief stop, we set off from Freedom Square, Tbilisi's central hub crowned by the statue of Saint George, heading toward Narikala Fortress. The walk offers breathtaking views of the city and the banks of the Kura River, where the city is built. For a more convenient route to the fortress, take the affordable cable car from Rike Park. From the Fortress, you can walk to the impressive 25-meter statue of Mother Georgia, erected in 1958 to mark the city's 1,500th anniversary.

Situated between the West and the East, as a bridge between Europe and Asia, Georgia’s capital is full of vibrant colors, blending rich tradition with modern elements, offering a vibrant, unforgettable experience.

A prime example of Tbilisi’s cultural fusion is Rustaveli Avenue, the city’s vibrant cultural hub. Named after the renowned medieval poet, this avenue is home to key landmarks such as the Parliament and the Georgian National Museum, which showcases everything from the Bronze Age to the 20th century. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Georgian Museum of Fine Arts, boasting a private collection of 3,500 works by 80 contemporary artists, and the National Gallery, with over 30,000 masterpieces by iconic Georgian painters.

The "Gabriadze" puppet theatre, housed in a medieval-style tower,

is a favorite spot for selfies, and nearby is the recently renovated Georgian National Opera that hosts opera and dance performances. If you're lucky, you can enjoy "Carmen" by Bizet. For evening outings, the vibrant Vera district is the place to be. From the "Stamba" hotel to the "Concept Store Chaos" and the excellent "Lolita Bar", which boasts a lovely little courtyard, enjoy outstanding cocktails and locally-sourced food. If you're in the mood for some shopping before your drink, the "Le Chic Radical" jewelry store and "They Said Books" bookstore are excellent choices.

Khachapuri: A local favorite Georgian cuisine is synonymous with khachapuri, the traditional Georgian dish, especially since Georgian refugees have opened excellent shops in the city center offering this fried bread. Typically stuffed with goat cheese and meat, it’s a beloved local specialty. In Tbilisi, we tasted various versions of this dish, including at "Sakhachapure N1", where we found it irresistible. For a more casual, modern dining experience, we visited "Rigi", known for its daily specials, river views, open kitchen, varieties of cheeses and cold cuts, and aromatic local wines.

A visit to Tbilisi wouldn't be complete without a stroll across the Peace Bridge, a striking glass and steel structure connecting old and new Tbilisi. If you're lucky enough to walk across it at night, you'll be treated to a dazzling light show from the hundreds of LED lights that illuminate the glass. Nearby, you'll find the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Georgia and the third tallest in the world.

As we leave Tbilisi, we’re already planning our return.

The photo shoot took place at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus, a landmark for culture, the arts, and literature, not only in Piraeus but across the entire country. One of the most striking buildings in the Greek capital, it boasts a seating capacity of 600. Designed by renowned municipal engineer and later Polytechnic professor Ioannis Lazarimos, it’s no surprise that both Greeks and international visitors refer to it as the “Temple of Art”.
