Your Guide to the Fantasy Genre Books Here are some suggested titles: Bishop, Anne. Bridge of Dreams Return to the world of Ephemera, where lands are connected only by bridges, in this latest entry. Locke, Kate. God Save the Queen In 2012, the undead Queen Victoria stills reigns over a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires. Martin, George R. R. Game of Thrones Now an HBO series, this first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series features a world in which the seasons are offkilter. As an era of winter returns, trouble is amassing along the border of Winterfell. Magic, mystery, and intrigue blend together in an adventure recommended for all fantasy fans. Look for season one, available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Modesitt, Jr., L. E. Princeps The latest novel in the Imager Portfolio series, young Quaeryt is elevated to Princeps of Tilbor for heroic deeds. When a volcanic eruption devastates the old capital of Telaryn, Quaeryt and his new bride must restore order before a neighboring ruler, seeing an opportunity, decides to invade.
Moon, Elizabeth. The Deed of Paksenarrion This all-in-one trilogy volume recounts the exploits of a sheepfarmer’s daughter who rises to become a great paladin in a world mired by war. An excellent high fantasy epic.
Rawn, Melanie Touchstone In this original fantasy world, theater is both art and spellcraft. Cayden Silversun intends to enter the highest reaches of society and power along with his troupe of actors by becoming the greatest players of all time.
Sullivan, Michael. Theft of Swords The first book in a trilogy that includes Rise of Empire and Heir of Novron. Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater are hired to pilfer a famed sword. They end up framed for the king’s murder. Now they must unravel an ancient mystery that has destroyed empires if they want to survive. Theft of Swords was originally epublished as The Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha.
Wright, John C. The Orphans of Chaos The first in a trilogy. Amelia and her four friends live at a strict English boarding school where they are the only students. Each of them has a talent suggesting that they are not mere humans, but why are they kept prisoner and to what purpose?

Some Favorite Series Various. Dragonlance The RPG Dungeons & Dragons inspired this popular series. Authors Tracy Hickman and Margaret wrote the signature books, set in the world of Krynn, and establishing what became a shared universe with Dragons, Death Knights, Kender, told over the course of five ages. Begin with Dragons of Autumn Twilight.
Brooks, Terry. The Shannara series. This long running, bestselling series begins with a quest for a sword that will help defeat the Warlock Lord threatening the world. Start with The Sword of Shannara.
Eddings, David. The Belgariad and Mallorean quintets. Newbies to fantasy fiction may want to start with this accessible series with the classic tale of an orphaned boy, a chosen one, who will rise to defeat a great evil. The first book is Pawn of Prophecy.
Jordan, Robert. The Wheel of Time series. This mammoth series is nearly complete, albeit posthumously. Discover one of the greatest sagas set in a traditional, fully-realized fantasy realm.
Pratchett, Terry. The Discworld series. This satirical fantasy series lampoons familiar themes of our real world with a rotating cast of characters whose adventures are zany and filled with mirth. The books need not be read in order, although it’s better to read some titles, like Going Postal before Making Money and The Color of Magic before The Light Fantastic. Though in the spirit of the books, just start anywhere.

Paranormal Tales The fantasy genre has widened in recent years to include more than the traditional sword and sorcery sagas. Sometimes known as urban fantasy, the following suggestions feature vampires, werewolves, wizards and the paranormal in a more contemporary setting. Butcher, Jim. The Harry Dresden Files If you haven’t read been reading this popular series, you should be. Start with the first book, Storm Front, and follow the adventures of Harry Dresden, wizard and private investigator, as he deals with the growing problems of supernatural forces in Chicago.
Look for the short-lived SyFy series of The Dresden Files available on DVD. Hearne, Kevin Iron Druid Chronicles Druid Atticus O’Sullivan has survived for two millennia. Now living in the Arizona desert Levitt, John. The Dog Days series Set in San Francisco, Mason has turned his back on being an enforcer for the magic practitioner community to instead focus on his music. When someone tries to kill him, Mason and his magical “dog”, Louie, will be drawn back into the supernatural community to catch a killer. Thurman, Rob. Brothers Cal and Niko have settled in New York City. For many years, they’ve been on the run from the Auphe, Cal’s less than friendly relatives from his father’s side of the family. Now, they run a detective agency, of sorts, solving cases out of the ordinary. Vaughn, Carrie. Kitty Norville is a werewolf who hosts a radio show for the supernatural disadvantaged. Trouble has a tendency to find her whether she likes it or not. 5

Anthologies Various. Legends II Del Rey, 2004. 813.087 LEGENDS II in SciFi/Fantasy Stories Terry Brooks, Diana Gabaldon, Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin Anne McCaffrey and other authors contribute short fantasy novels for this collection, edited by Robert Silverberg. Look for volumes one and three, also available. Various. The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories Tor Books, 2012. 813.087 WEIRD in SciFi/Fantasy Stories This leviathan-sized anthology features an all-star line up of authors with over 100 stories spanning a century. 6
Recommended Movies The DCL also hosts a selection of classic and current fantasy movies and TV series. Look for them on the DVD shelves alphabetically by title letter. Clash of the Titans (1982), (2010) Watch versions new and old and compare the adventures of the Greek hero Perseus as he discovers his destiny by slaying the petrifying gorgon, Medusa.
Excalibur (1981) Simply one of the best adaptations of the Arthurian legend ever filmed. This version revels in the myth and magic lacking in more recent films, which have favored historic realism.
The Fellowship of the Ring The Two Towers The Return of the King While J.R.R. Tolkien fans wait for the long-awaited, live-action The Hobbit, relive the adventures of Frodo and company in Peter Jackson’s phenomenal adaptation of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Legend of the Seeker Terry Goodkind’s first two Sword of Truth novels were adapted as seasons one and two of this syndicated series. Follow the adventures of Richard Cypher, confessor Kahlan Amnell and the wizard Zeddicus as they unravel prophecies and battle the ruthless Darken Rahl. The Princess Bride The classic tale of true love and high adventure, fun for the whole family. Buttercup has lost her true love and will be forced to marry a man she doesn’t love. Inigo Montoya is searching for the man who killed his father, and the Man in Black is determined to rescue Buttercup, but why? Based on the book by William Goldman.
