MEET THE RUNNER UP Joe Gubbins, Level 3 at Petroc Barnstaple, was the runner-up of this year’s competition. Here’s what he had to say.
HIP: Has taking part in the competition changed how you feel about your abilities? Joe: I feel really good. I’m really glad I came this far – I’m really happy with myself. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot and my confidence has been really boosted.
On 21st May, after three rounds of competition and some incredible demonstrations of plumbing ability, Tom Race, a Level 2 apprentice at Burnley College, was announced as our HIP Learner of the Year 2021. We caught up with him to ask what winning the competition meant to him.
HIP: What was the best thing about the competition? Joe: I’ve learnt so much, it’s boosted my capabilities and my confidence and it shows if you put your mind to something, you can do it. HIP: What would you say to people considering entering in 2022? Joe: I’d say don’t think twice about it. Just go for it and do it. Just go for it.

HIP: How does it feel to win the competition? Tom: I’m shocked! When I got the phone call this morning it was a surprise - I didn’t expect to get to the finals let alone win the competition, so it means a lot. I’m really proud and my boss is really proud of me too so it’s just amazing to win. HIP: How did you hear about the competition? Tom: While I was at college last year I saw the competition taking place. I asked my tutors what was going on and got some more information. Then I spoke to last year’s Burnley College contestant. He said he enjoyed it and that it was a good test, so I spoke to my tutor about doing it and it went from there really.
MEET THE WINNER TOM RACE
“It was a tough challenge but I don’t like doing the same stuff over and over. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was a really good test of our abilities”
HIP: What was the competition experience like?
HIP: Why should people enter the 2022 competition?
Tom: It was a tough challenge but I like a challenge, I don’t like doing the same stuff over and over. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was a really good test of our abilities. I would recommend doing it.
Tom: I think people should enter the HIP Learner of the Year competition next year because it’s a really good challenge and it helps you showcase all the skills that you’ve learnt from college and with your workplace. You get to win some great prizes from all the great sponsors. It’s a really good way of testing yourself and putting into practise what you’ve learnt already.
HIP: What made you choose plumbing as a career? Tom: Burnley College enticed me into plumbing when I went to do a taster day. I did all the different trades but the plumbing activities were the ones I enjoyed the most, so that’s the reason enrolled on plumbing to be honest.
HIP: What are you going to do with the prizes?! Tom: I’m thinking about buying a new drill because I wanted one for a few months now, so now I’ve got the money to do it and all the other ones will come in handy as and when. I need them so I’m really grateful!

We asked learners and those already in the trade to tell us the issues that are affecting them, with experts across the industry helping to answer questions and provide advice. Got something that's concerning you? Get in touch and we’ll get your question answered!
@ABPLUMBINGHEATING_BEN (BEN GRADDON) Apprenticeships need to be pushed more in schools rather than just the typical A-level route. While I wholeheartedly agree that apprenticeships need to be given more prominence in schools, there are some signs the situation is improving. For too long, apprenticeships and vocational qualifications have been seen as second best whilst schools openly favour academic routes such as A-levels. In 2019, research by Careers England highlighted that only 10% of secondary schools had sufficient funding for career advice services - a symptom of a system that invests in and measures exam grades above all else. With the Government’s renewed focus on STEM subjects and the introduction of T-Levels as an alternative to A-Levels, technical and vocational education is being given a new-found prominence and with it, we hope, attracting a more diverse interest in apprenticeships.
Got a question for our industry experts? Get in touch and we will do our best to get your question answered! Send your question to editor@sng-publishing.co.uk
It’s important to note that apprenticeships can only truly take off with significant support for the small business owners required to provide them. The CIPHE highlights these issues in its new manifesto and will continue to make the point that, whilst an increased focus on technical routes in education is a positive first step, there is much more to be done before apprenticeships really do sit at the centre of the Government’s ‘green industrial revolution’. Tim Sainty Membership Director CIPHE
@RUSSHAKA (RUSS HACKER) I’m concerned about information gaps in college courses. Utilise the support available in your college: You’ll get 3-month progress reviews throughout your course, with your Mentor and Tutor. Bring up any concerns you have during those. Mock exams will help identify any gaps in knowledge. Utilise your Personal Tutor. Never be afraid to ask a question, and always ask for support. Your college support team will help you with everything from studying issues, mental health, finance, partner issues - there is nothing they can't help you with. Consistent learning: It’s important that you work at home and study consistently rather than trying to cram everything into the last few months. Read a section of your text book every night – just ten minutes really works. Or watch a YouTube video on different parts of your course. Mix it up to keep it interesting. Know your learning style: Some learners work best making notes from white boards, others from handouts. Some students prefer videos or demonstrations, others group discussions. Think about your own learning style – do you learn best from seeing, hearing, reading/writing or doing? No one is ever 100% one type of learning style, just try to find yours. Most of all it’s important to be selfmotivated: You get out of something what you put in. Never be afraid to ask a question (no matter how stupid you may think it is) or put your hand up and say you don’t understand something. WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOL BAG?
MATTHEW WILLIAMS AKA MATT_BOILERMAN Matthew started his apprenticeship at British Gas in 2007 as a Technical Engineer. Back then you either chose a Technical or Installer route, so the training was very much service and repair concentrated. Matthew says, “I will always be grateful for the quality of the training - the British Gas Academy in Dartford was a brand-new facility, we were literally one of the first groups through the door. In the field I was very lucky, there were a lot of experienced engineers on my patch to gain knowledge from during my time out of the academy.” After 11 years fine-tuning his skills in the field, Matthew joined Carshalton Boilers in Sutton, Surrey. Working for a small, family-owned company, he’s been able to explore and gain knowledge in other areas of the job, including completing a commercial qualification in 2020.
> UNILITE PL-3 A lot of light in a very small package. This slimline inspection light fits effortlessly in your tool bag, and does a brilliant job at illuminating your working area inside the boiler. With its magnetic bottom, you can just stick it on the inside of the casing and crack on with the job.
matt_boilerman “My favourite aspect of my job is diagnosis and repair. That’s where I get the ultimate job satisfaction, fixing that job that so far no one else has”
HOT TOOL TIP I ALWAYS SAY THE TOOL MARKET IS LIKE THE FOOTBALL TRANSFER MARKET. THE QUALITY PLAYERS ALWAYS COST MORE, BUT THE QUALITY PLAYERS ALWAYS WIN YOU GAMES.
> NERRAD SUPER WIDE STUBBY WRENCH This adjustable wrench is short but has a nice wide 32mm jaw. Loosening unions on water or gas connections inside combination boilers can be challenging due to a lack of access space. This stubby wrench will give you decent purchase for the most stubborn of connections.
> WERA TOOL CHECK PLUS A must-have for any boiler service engineer. A selection of sockets and a mini ratchet, for all those hard to reach places inside the boiler. Along with a mini screwdriver with a selection of bits, it copes with anything from removing casing screws to adjusting gas valves.
> KNIPEX MINI PLIERS SET When the adjustable wrench fails, the pliers always come to the rescue! The cobra grips can help get out that rounded-down screw or nut, and the flat jawed pliers are great for any small unions or even rad valves.
> TELESCOPIC MAGNETIC PEN TOOL A top tip for any engineer! Not only could this save your day when trying to retrieve that screw you just dropped down the back of the boiler, but it’ill also help you identify blockages in copper system pipework. Copper that is blocked with sludge will produce a magnetic attraction!
> UNILITE UR4.5 This tool bag from Unilite is top quality, from its comfort to carry, to most importantly its storage applications. Not many trips back to the van!

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
In college you’re probably used to seeing just two types of pipe tube cutter - the traditional tube cutter and the C-shaped cutter. Now Nerrad Tools have brought out a brand-new, best of both worlds cutter, designed to cut copper and stainless steel tubes with the advantage of being able to be used in tight spaces – and we’re sure every plumbing and heating apprentice will find themselves working on a job in a cramped space! So what’s so special about the Adjustable Ratchet Action Copper Tube Cutter? ▸ the Internal Cutting Mechanism rotates independently from the outer body, ideal when working with tubes that are close to the wall ▸ the tight ratchet action requires just 30 degrees movement to operate, so it’s easy to use in confined spaces ▸ includes the NT4067 which can cut 67mm tube in situ, making it an ideal time saving tool.
HOW TO GUIDE > STEP ONE
01
Place the cutter onto the tube, keeping the tube between the rollers. Tighten by twisting the black handle clockwise until the cutter wheel makes contact with the tube.
> STEP TWO
02
Pull the black handle out and pull it away from the cutter opening. Remember, a pull away from the opening is a cut, pushing towards the opening is using the ratchet.
> STEP THREE Continue to use the ratchet action until the silver body has fully rotated and is flush with the outer body.
03
> STEP FOUR When the black handle clicks back inward, twist it to adjust the load on the wheel, pull it out again and push away from the opening once more.

Backflow in homes is bad news, however, check valves can prevent it. We spoke to Richard Bateman, Product Marketing Manager at RWC, to find out about check valves and how they help.
B
ackflow is caused by differences in pressure between the mains supply and a water system and can lead to serious problems, such as contaminated water. Because of its dangers, all five categories of the 1999 Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations for England and Wales require the installation of devices to protect against backflow. The most common devices are check valves, which ensure water flows one-way, stopping backflow re-entering and contaminating supplies.
Check Valve options Single check valves - Type EA (verifiable) and EB (non-verifiable) – for fluid category 2 applications.
> CHECK VALVES It’s vital to know where to install check valves, with placement needed as close to the risk point as possible. For example, in a fluid 2 category application where a mixer tap is “passing” and allowing hot back down the cold supply, the valve should be placed on the cold supply and as close to the tap as possible.
“It’s vital to know where to install check valves, with placement needed as close to the risk point as possible” Double check valves – Type EC (V) and ED (NV) – for fluid category 3 applications.
No matter the application, it’s important to prevent backflow from happening, which RWC’s range of single and double-check valves can do – including JG Speedfit, Reliance Valves and SharkBite. RWC say they are committed to providing the vital products and advice all installers need to prevent backflow.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS!
Being one of the hand-picked members of Saniflo’s 100-strong network of plumbing engineers is no mean feat. According to customer feedback, female-run Saniflo Services is one of the best out there.
“Gender is never an issue – customers are very happy as long as the job gets done”
> HISTORY ▸ Founded in 2002 as an authorised Saniflo engineer covering Devon and Cornwall ▸ Lyn Bester Johnson takes the business on in 2003 ▸ In 2005 Kathleen Kosh joins part-time ▸ Business grows and receives excellent customer feedback ▸ Kathleen re-joins in 2019 ▸ Award for “Best Independent Plumbing & Technical Services 2020 - Cornwall” at the Southern Enterprise Awards
> WHY SANIFLO? Some plumbers just don’t like installing macerators, but the ladies at Saniflo Services look at the wider picture. “It’s all about what you can achieve with a Saniflo not the product itself. We have installed them on boats, in houses, hotels, cafés – any location that requires extra facilities where traditional drainage is not available.” > BEING A FEMALE IN THE PLUMBING SECTOR
▸ 2021 - Richard Squires joins the team ▸ New van arrives to replace the outgoing workhorse that clocked up 105,000 miles!
According to Lyn, being a female plumber is not a barrier in the sector. With integrity and the right skills there is opportunity. Gender is never an issue – customers are very happy as long as the job gets done.
> CAREER ADVICE FOR APPRENTICES ▸ Qualifications are important. Basic English and Maths underpin any career and of course open the door to more learning opportunities ▸ Build reputation – know your stuff and do the simple things well – communication, timeliness, punctuality ▸ Never underestimate how important it is to actually turn up on time and do the job properly. > MARKETING Social Media is your friend. WITH ANDY CAM We had a chat with Andy Cam, the owner of CosyWarm Central Heating and Plumbing in Sheffield. He's been in the business for more than 40 years so he knows a thing or two!
HIP Magazine: How did you start out in the plumbing trade?
HIP: How does social media affect your business?
Andy Cam: When I left school I went into fibrous plastering, which I soon realised was not for me! Jobs were scarce and a recession was upon the UK. There was a 6-week course available where you could try out different trades. The last one of the last week was plumbing - it was then I realised that ‘I Love Plumbing’.
AC: This has been a game changer for me as it has helped elevate my business. Social media is key to keeping updated on new products and sharing ideas and tips. It creates a community of like-minded individuals who can learn from and support one another. Through Twitter and Instagram I have made some good friends, too. It’s also good for consumers when they want to check out the standard and services I offer. I’m just launching my YouTube channel - so watch this space!
HIP: What advice would you give someone just starting out? AC: Really listen to what is being asked of you. Ask questions - the more you ask, the more you will understand. The big one for me is to be punctual, whether that’s with your employer or at a customer’s property. HIP: What tool could you not do without? AC: My Knipex Cobra Grips. They are really versatile, hand-friendly and can be used on the smallest nut to the widest wastes and traps, so one pair does everything. HIP: What's changed during your career? AC: My hair colour! No seriously, when I first started out everything was manual and time consuming, like wiping lead joints! Now I am using my Rems mini press gun to make joints on copper pipe. And instead of getting tangled up in loads of wires coming from the electric tools, everything is now battery-operated – much easier.
HIP: What do you wish you knew more about? AC: Air source heat pumps, renewables and what the next generation of heating products is going to look like. HIP: What's your favourite thing about your job? AC: Helping people – solving problems and making my customers happy. I love a good boiler installation, but not so much the paperwork side of running a business.
WHAT I’VE LEARNED : People skills: how you talk and approach people makes a huge difference. Don’t over promise and under deliver!
HIP: What's been the biggest waste of money career wise? AC: From an expense point of view, years ago I did leaflet dropping in my local area. So many dropped and very little return in actual jobs. Today it’s totally different when marketing your business - social media is amazing and it’s free!

PIPE DREAMS
There are many types of plumbing pipes for both residential or commercial use. The team at Polypipe is sure their systems are the ones for you. Keep reading to find out why.
> KEY BENEFITS Polypipe’s entire range of plumbing and heating pipe comes with Pro-Straight technology built in, giving you unparalleled ease of use during installation. Polybutylene pipe is ideal for most domestic hot and cold water plumbing and heating systems, offering exceptional durability and long-term performance. Polypipe is committed to polybutylene which has become the preferred material of choice for building and renovation projects due to its superior performance characteristics. One of the key advantages of Pro-Straight for an installer is that it has natural flexibility, so you can bend the pipe to fit even the most awkward of positions. Whether it involves extending the number of rooms in a property, or a new bathroom fit-out it’s the ideal product for the job.
TIPS FOR PERFECTING YOUR PIPEWORK: > STEP ONE: CUTTING THE PIPE
01
Check the pipe is not scored or scratched in any way. Using a pipe cutter, cut the pipe squarely using the ‘K’ marks on the pipe as a guide. These marks indicate when the pipe has been inserted into the fitting correctly. > STEP TWO: USE A PIPE STIFFENER
02
Insert a pipe stiffener into the pipe. When using a sealed stiffener, the stiffener will be retained in the fitting when demounted.
> STEP THREE: CHECK THE FITTING
03
Visually check that all components are present, undamaged and free from contamination. If any further lubrication is required, silicone lubricant works very well. Substances such as solder flux must not be used. > STEP FOUR: INSERT PIPE FULLY INTO FITTING
04
Insert pipe into the fitting, ensuring it is inserted to the full socket depth denoted by the next ‘K’ mark on the pipe.
> STEP FIVE: CHECK JOINT SECURITY
05
A quick tug on the pipe will confirm that the pipe is inserted past the grab ring ensuring a robust connection has been made.

ELECTRIC FAQS SHOWERS:
Martyn Brown, Contract and Technical Manager at Triton Showers, answers two of the most frequently asked questions he receives during his working day. > QUESTIONS
1
How much flow can I expect to get from an electric shower?
Martyn says: The performance of all temperature stabilised electric showers is governed by the following factors; kilowatt rating of the shower, water temperature entering the shower, voltage to the shower and the preferred showering temperature.
At a showering temperature of 38°C an electric shower will deliver 2.5 to 3.5L per minute in winter, increasing to 5-10L per minute during the warmer months. The higher the kilowatts, the greater the flow of water for the desired temperature selected.
2
What is the minimum water pressure requirement for an electric shower designed to connect onto the mains cold water supply? Martyn says: Electric showers require a minimum operating pressure in order to activate switches controlling heating elements in the unit. A minimum flow at that pressure is also required for optimum temperature control and performance. Requirements differ for the wide range of showers on the market. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications. If mains cold water supply doesn't provide adequate pressure and flow, an electric shower can be connected to a cistern fed pumped supply.
“Requirements differ for the wide range of showers on the market” > PRESSURE AND FLOW REQUIREMENTS:
8kW and 8.5kW showers: 1 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 8L per minute
9kW and 9.5kW showers: 1 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 9L per minute
10.5kW showers: 1.5 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 11L per minute.

WHY CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE? Choosing a sustainable toilet or urinal can improve water efficiency and create a healthy and comfortable building for the occupiers. We asked leading manufacturer Fluidmaster to give us some handy facts for apprentice plumbers.
DID YOU KNOW…? Toilets and urinals are part of a building’s water management system and can impact the efficiency of the building. Sustainable water management can:
WHY CHOOSE WATER SAVING PRODUCTS? ▸ Many property developers are choosing long-term sustainability over initial cost ▸ Sustainable urinal and toilet water management technology is highly efficient and contributes to lower running costs over the lifetime of a building ▸ They help provide future proofing of buildings or investments
CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING TOILETS AND URINALS: ▸ Initial product cost
▸ Lower carbon emissions
▸ Running costs
▸ Improve water conservation
▸ Maintenance
▸ Enhance energy efficiency
▸ Ease of installation
STATS AND FACTS:

“Be patient and give yourself time. Take integrating back into normal life at your own pace and don’t feel pressured”
01
> UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THAT FEELINGS OF ANXIETY IN THIS SITUATION ARE COMPLETELY NORMAL
04
> USE YOUR TRIED AND TESTED COPING STRATEGIES
02
> START WITH SMALLER SOCIAL SITUATIONS
05
> WORK ON REPROGRAMMING YOUR MIND
The reason you are feeling anxiety could be that your mind is thinking of going from no social interaction to full on social interaction and skipping the part in the middle, in effect making you feel overwhelmed. If that’s the case, then stop and remember that you can start with smaller social situations and build up to larger ones.
For some people, even all of these tips won’t help. That’s when you have to put in more effort to start feeling ok - reprogramming your mind is a key part of this. Practice mindfulness, reaffirm positive thoughts, keep a journal or diary, there are so many things you can do yourself to change the way you think. If you are struggling, there are lots of online resources that can help.
> DON’T LET PEER PRESSURE OR OTHER PEOPLE'S EXCITEMENT MAKE YOU LEAP BACK INTO LIFE TOO QUICKLY
03
06
> BE PATIENT AND GIVE YOURSELF TIME
Even if you’ve worked throughout the pandemic, you still had to face significant changes in your lifestyle. For more than a year, one of the only reasons you could leave the house was to go to work. Not being able to take part in leisure activities and socialise with other people have become so engrained that we have accepted it as the ‘new normal’ so going back to the ‘old normal’ might be a big adjustment.
Although it may seem like everyone around you is excited, no one is forcing you to go shopping in a packed shopping centre or sit in a stadium of thousands of people from June 21st. Take reintegrating back into normal life at your own pace and start with situations that make you feel comfortable.
Before lockdown, if you were feeling down, you would do things that made you feel better. Lockdown took away the opportunity for us to do the things that we would usually do to protect our mental health. Going back to reality will mean that we will get back those coping strategies and for some people that will be enough to start healing from the mental health stresses of lockdown.
Whatever you choose to do to ease your anxiety, remember that this is a process, and it will take some time before you start noticing changes in your mental health and feelings. Be patient and give yourself time to really start noticing changes and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Talking and sharing your feelings really helps.

LOWDOWN ON HEAT PUMPS As changes to Part L of the Building Regulations and the launch of the Government’s Future Home Standard moves our industry towards cleaner home heating solutions, your generation of apprentices looks set to be one of the first for which heat pump installation will become extremely common.

eat pumps are relatively straight forward to install but you will need to make sure you have a good base level of product knowledge and every single installation will require planning and preparation.
> SO WHERE TO BEGIN? The good news is that you can start straight away by viewing Grant UK’s heat pumps videos on YouTube. > TRAINING The videos should give you some insight into what goes into a heat pump installation. However, it goes without saying that when it comes to an actual installation, preparation is vital to ensure that the heating system meets a householder’s needs so that the product operates both efficiently and effectively. This preparation includes a full heat loss calculation, and thorough understanding of how the technology works. To get to this point, an installer requires some solid product knowledge, and should complete full product installation training with the manufacturer before specifying and fitting a heat pump. Grant UK, for instance, has comprehensive installer courses available at the Academies in Devizes, Hawes and Livingston, as well as online tuition via the eLearning Academy. There are some product courses on the eLearning Academy that apprentices can access for free.

> HELP WITH CALCULATIONS
> RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE
When installing heat pumps, it is essential to start with a full room by room heat loss calculation to determine the heat pump required to meet the design conditions for the property concerned.
The G-CERT Scheme offers a solution to installers who want to install to MCS standards without formally registering with MCS themselves. The G-CERT Scheme takes care of all the paperwork and notifications as well as commissioning and signing off the system for MCS approval. This enables the householder to claim the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), the government financial incentive designed to encourage the use of renewable heating technologies.
A HEAT LOSS ACCOUNTS FOR > the room sizes > the insulation levels of both the walls and windows > the height of the rooms. The calculation brings together the amount of space that needs heating along with the building’s materials and their capability to reduce heat loss from the property. Grant UK has a Heat Loss Calculator tool that can be used for a more thorough analysis of the property’s needs, eliminating potential errors at quotation stage. Assistance with this is also available from Grant UK’s in-house Design Team and through installations taking place via the G-CERT Scheme.
You are starting out on an exciting career in a great industry, which is transitioning towards cleaner and greener heat generation. Eventually, you could join the Grant UK G1 Installer Scheme which allows you to access even more support, extended warranties and rewards. In the meantime, we wish you all the best on your heat pump journey! For more details visit www.grantuk.com
