lot has changed in the last year but even more so in the last decade, with social media and a strong digital presence acting as the best tool to help you and your business grow. So, how can you take advantage of this new opportunity to develop your business and build your brand?

DIGITAL PRESENCE

Make sure that you have a website and an online presence. A simple website combining the following features will act as the foundation for your business and a channel for you to reach new customers.

IMAGES

When working on a job make sure you take a good quality photo of your handywork so that you can advertise it across social media and include it on your website.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Create separate accounts for your business across all platforms so that customers know exactly who they’re reaching out to. Separating your accounts will create a positive and professional image to both new and existing customers, whilst giving you a separate space to promote your business.

CONTACT

Make sure the contact information on your website and social media is easily accessible for customers. Include a professional email address, social media handles and telephone numbers. For social media use in-app features to register your email address, contact number and web address to cover all bases.

96%

of small UK businesses use social media to help promote their business and reach new customers (Social Media Examiner, 2017).

41%

of local businesses depend on social media to increase revenue (eMarketer, 2016).

¼

Online purchases represent more than a quarter of all UK retail sales (Office for National Statistics, 2021).

ESSENTIAL POWER TOOLS WITH JAMES THE PLUMBER

@james_the_plumber_

F

James Bell-Taylor decided to retrain in his late 20s, starting his apprenticeship at 28. He’s now a fully qualified heating and gas engineer with big plans for the future! SDS DRILL

Often bought as a set, the combi drill and impact driver are a powerful combination and a must have. Make sure you research and buy brushless if possible. They take some abuse, so you want something that will handle that.

SDS drills certainly take some hammer (pardon the pun). They serve multiple purposes and with the right attachments can be used not only for drilling holes, but can be used for chiselling, core holes, chasing walls and so on.

WET AND DRY VAC

MULTI-TOOL

Customers respect clean, tidy trades people. It also makes your job easier by working in a tidy area. The wet vac function is a lifesaver. Great for draining toilet cisterns and keeping sludge away from carpets. Very handy for airlocks, too!

Give the multi-tool a knighthood! All-purpose tool for cutting in tight spaces on the majority of materials with the right blades. Awkward floorboards in corners, cutting out tiles with minimal damage etc. the multi-tool has you covered.

PLUMBER PROFILE | HIP

LONDON PLUMBER RACHEL JONES Rachel Jones originally did a business degree and worked in marketing before deciding to retrain. After a decade in a corporate environment she says she finds doing something practical, where you can see what you’ve achieved at the end of the day, so much more rewarding. HIP MAGAZINE: Why did you decide on this trade? Rachel Jones: Plumbing is the best of both worlds. You use your body and mind in equal measures, and the range of work is endless. Installing a high-end bathroom is poles apart from digging for a new mains pipe or installing a new cylinder, but both are equally rewarding. With plumbing, every day is different - and you never run out of things to learn. HIP: What advice would you give someone just starting out? RJ: It’s not a race! I was desperate to get my qualifications and go out on my own, but experience is everything. Get as much experience as you can, ideally alongside different people. Just because you’ve done something once, doesn’t make you a professional. Doing it 50 times, in different scenarios, making mistakes, learning from them – that’s the experience you need to be a great plumber. Also, be nice to everyone. Some of my smallest jobs have led to my biggest contracts.

“GET AS MUCH EXPERIENCE AS YOU CAN, IDEALLY ALONGSIDE DIFFERENT PEOPLE”

HIP: What tool could you not do without? RJ: My compression spanner. I only used adjustables for years but there’s something truly satisfying about a spanner that has one job and does it perfectly every time. HIP: How are you growing your business? RJ: The last year has been hectic for most tradespeople. There seems to be a real skills shortage and as a result everyone is so busy. But generally speaking, business grows through reputation. It’s so important to manage each job in a way that makes it lead to 10 more. Local community Facebook groups are absolute gold for that. HIP: Which bit of new technology are you most interested in? RJ: Anything emission-free is exciting to me. The way we heat our homes and water has a huge impact on the world, so I’m keen to be part of the generation that drives the change. HIP: What skills does a good plumber need? RJ: Determination and attention to detail. Determination because water is relentless. Attention to detail because that really matters to the customer. They aren’t impressed by the fact their plumbing doesn’t leak – that’s the expectation and bare minimum. They’re impressed by the way the job looks, and the extra thought you’ve put into it.

HIP: Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why? RJ: Labour Councillor, Clare Coghill. A few years ago I couldn’t get a job - I had a minor rant about how contractors claimed to support the local community but in reality didn’t hire. Within a week Clare had introduced me to the main contractor for all social housing in my borough. That was a pivotal moment. HIP: Has social media changed the plumbing community? RJ: Totally! The amount of teaching everyone does is phenomenal. Constant sharing of knowledge and skills. People I started out talking to on Instagram have since helped me with loads of jobs. It’s a great way to surround yourself with the kind of plumbers and people you like and respect.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED

Communication is everything. People don’t expect you to be able to do everything all the time, but they expect you to tell them what’s going on and when. It’s an important part of building trust and being known as a reliable tradesperson.

HIP | FEATURE: UNDERFLOOR HEATING

A LOW TEMPERATURE HEATING VISION The Future Homes Standard consultation has provided a vision to improve new building efficiency to deliver a 27% reduction in carbon emissions compared with the old Part L building regulation. We asked BEAMA more.

T

he Future Homes Standard is guiding system design towards low temperature systems. Amongst the measures proposed is a requirement that when a new heating system is fitted, the system is designed to run at 55oC or less.

EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT

In a recent BRE guide to the design of low temperature heating systems they showed that the advantage to lower running temperatures in boilers and heat pumps was an efficiency improvement of up to 6% for boilers and a Coefficient of Performance (CoP) increase from 3 to 4 for heat pumps.

INHERENT LOW TEMPERATURES

Underfloor heating systems are inherently low temperatures. With a normal operating temperature of around 400C they can be used directly with heat pumps and boilers set to operate at these low flow temperatures.

WHY LOW TEMPERATURE SYSTEMS?

Correctly designed, with the help of a BEAMA Underfloor group member, these systems provide an even, comfortable heat over the whole room and set the walls free of the large and intrusive radiators that a low temperature system would otherwise need. They are not expensive to install, compared to the large steel radiators, and the system installation is simple, with designs provided by the manufacturers.

“…THESE SYSTEMS PROVIDE AN EVEN, COMFORTABLE HEAT OVER THE WHOLE ROOM AND SET THE WALLS FREE OF LARGE AND INTRUSIVE RADIATORS…”

WANT MORE INFO?

For more information, access the BEAMA Low Temperature Heating white paper via the BEAMA website www.beama.org.uk, or contact a BEAMA Underfloor member.

COMPLETELY FLOORED The number of underfloor heating systems, controls and configuration options available pose a daunting choice for installers. We have some guidance from leading underfloor heating manufacturer Polypipe on how to select the best water-based system for your project. THE IN-FLOOR SYSTEM

This system avoids adding height to the floor as it is fitted between existing joists – so is ideal in upper floor renovations or work in cellars. Between-joist systems are available in a wide range of formats, but it is worth investigating the pre-configured modular heating panels from Polypipe for the ultimate quick and easy installation.

THE OVER-FLOOR SYSTEM

Best used on existing solid or timber deck floors, these low profile systems are installed over the floor and are the go-to choice for whole house and single room projects. Polypipe’s unique Overlay® Plus range accommodates all types of projects, dependent on the final floor covering selection.

HIP | CONCEALED SHOWER VALVES

“USING A HANSGROHE IBOX ALLOWS EASY ACCESS TO THE THERMOSTAT, DIVERTER AND FILTERS”

TIPS AND HINTS DON’T DO:

Do not use silicone around the outside of the finish set faceplate cover, only use silicone to seal the iBox to the tiles or finished surface.

TOP TIPS

Before fitting your finish set valve and shower outlets, do not forget to flush through the pipework. Debris will block the filters, cause performance issues and damage the thermostat if this stage is not done properly.

When fitting a shower room using a concealed valve there are lots of factors to consider, so we asked Hansgrohe to give you some handy hints. Always start by checking the existing water system and function of the space. Ask these questions:

1 2 3 4

Will the system be sufficient for the shower to function properly? Is there a combi boiler, vented low pressure or mains fed unvented hot water system in place? Is a tank or pump needed to deliver the right pressure and flow? Will the products selected be fit for the room’s purpose?

RECOMMENDATIONS:

■ Planning pipe runs and the use of isolation valves - use full flow versions to allow maximum flow capacity ■ Pipe sizing - where possible use 22mm supply pipes on unvented hot water systems and shower pump systems ■ Combination boiler systems - use 15mm supply pipes. ■ Before installing – find out the size of the tiles being fitted, so that you can position the iBox on the centre of a tile or on the centre of a grout line for symmetry purposes.

HANSGROHE IBOX

Decide the best location for the shower valve and shower outlets. Remember, the hansgrohe iBox has a minimum 80mm to a maximum depth of 108mm to the front face of the tile or finished surface.

HIP | HOW TO

AS EASY AS ABC When connecting plastic push-fit Hep2O fittings to copper pipework, it really is as easy as ABC. Just make sure you follow our handy guide. A. MAKE SURE YOUR COPPER HAS A CLEAN EDGE

“ANY JAGGED EDGES CAN DAMAGE THE ALL-IMPORTANT O-RING INSIDE THE FITTING, WHICH CAN LEAD TO LEAKS!” Doing this means that when you’ve connected you’ll know the pipe is watertight, even if you’re working in a tricky space like a ceiling or underneath the floor.

We recommend using cutters or a slice to cut your copper piping as this will give you a completely smooth edge and ensure a watertight seal. You can use a hacksaw, but we’d suggest using an emery cloth or file to round off the edges if you do. Remember, any jagged edges can damage the all-important O-ring inside the fitting, which can lead to leaks!

C. JUST PUSH!

Finally, make sure your copper pipe is level with the fitting and push them together. It’s that simple!

SCAN THE QR CODE

B. MARK YOUR PIPE

Your copper pipe needs to be fully inserted into the plastic fitting. But before you insert the pipe, grab a marker pen, line up the pipe alongside the fitting and draw a line where the connection is, then you’ll always know where you should be aiming for.

WANT MORE INFO?

For more hints and tips around using Hep2O visit the Wavin UK YouTube channel, or follow @Hep2O on Instagram and Facebook.

UNILITE SLR 1000

WERA HAND TOOLS

ELECTRICAL MULTIMETERS

FLUE GAS ANALYSER

I have always used and trusted in my Bahco adjustable spanners and they have never let me down. I use the 6” spanners as these allow me to get into tighter spaces inside boilers.

These are the Wera Tools that I use daily. The ergonomics of the Wera grip make the tools a pleasure to use and they’re built to last, especially the ratchets.

TOOL BAG

The tool bag that I carry to almost all my jobs is the Velocity Progear Rogue 2.0. With this bag and the tools inside, I’m certain I can complete 90% of jobs. This has to be the best bag for servicing and breakdown engineers who want to carry a minimalist toolkit.

After using many different types of water pump pliers, I have come to realise the Knipex cobras are by far the best for what they are used for. I use them for heavy duty tasks and where spanners won’t work.

As a breakdown engineer, 70% of faults on boilers are electronic components that fail. Having good electrical knowledge and multimeters can help diagnose faults.

Working on boilers and heating systems means lighting can be poor or even absent, but no worksite is ever poorly lit once the trusty Unilite is turned on!

The Flue Gas Analyser is needed to confirm a gas burning appliance is working well and safely. The Testo 310 has been reliable for years, but I’m upgrading to the Kane 458s as I need a Hydrogen Compensated Analyser.

TOP TIP

Study and work with a reputable engineer for a good few years. Education is what truly counts and not having two left hands also helps!

MOST USEFUL TOOL My most useful tool is my DEWALT DCV584L Wet Vac. I use it almost daily when carrying out any wet work, just to ensure I don’t make a mess.

HIP | FEATURE: RENEWABLES

QUICK GUIDE: HEAT PUMPS Kevin Ellis, Renewables Sales Manager at Grant UK, explains why heat pumps are a hot topic in the heating and plumbing industry.

Why are Heat Pumps in the news so much? It’s down to legislation and the UK’s move to Net Zero; the UK Government has announced its ambitions, committing to a net zero target for carbon emissions by 2050 and the heating industry is now gearing up to meet that demand. How do Grant’s heat pumps work? Air source heat pumps utilise the heat energy in the air and convert it into usable energy to heat homes. Grant Aerona³ heat pumps are ‘air to water’ systems which means that they capture heat energy from the air and transfer this into ‘wet’ heating systems, such as radiators or underfloor heating.

Heat pumps can be an excellent choice for those households that aren’t connected to mains gas, but it is important that the property is well insulated, the system is correctly designed using a full room by room heat loss calculation, and it is properly set up and commissioned. Are there any downsides to fitting a heat pump? Cost and noise are the two main concerns when discussing heat pumps with customers. The fans on a heat pump make a sound when they rotate, but there are quieter options like the Grant Aerona³. Both our 13kW and 17kW Aerona³ heat pumps have been awarded the Quiet Mark.

“THE NEED FOR HETAS REGISTERED INSTALLERS… PRESENTS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE ENTERING THE INDUSTRY TODAY”

Biomass fuel

R

E

Wood burning stoves and pellet appliances are appealing to homeowners as a means of secondary heating, complementing the primary heat source of gas or oil. They could become even more popular in the future as the UK turns to greener energy alternatives.

U

GAIN IN POPULARITY

T

Solid fuel and biomass are increasing in popularity as homeowners and installers realise the benefits of burning an approved fuel that meets the requirements of Air Quality legislation, and is certified under DEFRA’s Ready to Burn scheme which is administered by HETAS and Woodsure. HETAS and Woodsure work together to support cleaner and safer choices for the use of biomass and other solid fuels, appliances and associated technologies.

A

CLEANER AND SAFER CHOICES

E

The new apprenticeship qualification sees the reintroduction of solid fuel and biomass into the curriculum, so HIP caught up with Mike Harvey, Training & Technical Support Manager at HETAS, for some insider insight.

F

UNDERSTANDING WOOD AND BIOMASS BURNING GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Homeowners are becoming increasingly aware of issues relating to climate change and air quality. Therefore the need for HETAS Registered installers experienced in the installation and maintenance of these appliances and fuels is growing, as homeowners seek alternatives to fossil fuels. This presents a great opportunity for those entering the industry today to be equipped for the future.

HETAS TRAINING HETAS accredited training centres are located around the UK and Ireland to facilitate all training needs.

TOP TIP HETAS training is ‘Recognised Prior Learning’ so can be undertaken at any time throughout an apprenticeship for apprentices who are working alongside a HETAS Registered installer.

HIP | PERSON PROFILE

INTERVIEW WITH STEPHANOS YOHANNES TEAMED UP WITH ESG We’ve teamed up with ESG Limited and are co-sponsoring an All-Female Skills Competition on International Women’s Day in March, to encourage more females into the industry. The competition, held at Lewisham College, will include eight female apprentices based in London and/ or the South East. The competition is supported by Baxi and Scruffs, and will be judged by CIPHE’s Jerry Whiteley. ESG currently has 20 apprentices and a designated Apprentice Mentor, Stephanos Yohannes. We had a chat with Stephanos to find out how he got to where he is now.

PLUMBING AGAINST ADVERSITY Stephanos had a tough start. He was in and out of the care system, experienced racism and battled with dyslexia. But he didn’t let adversity get in his way and now he’s a fully qualified plumber mentoring apprentices at ESG.

“WE’RE ALL THE SAME – DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU ANYTHING DIFFERENT”

| WINTER 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK

PERSON PROFILE | HIP

HIP MAGAZINE: What made you start a plumbing apprenticeship? Stephanos Yohannes: I saw a plumber fixing a cylinder at my mum’s house, asked him what he was doing and he gave me his company card. I rang them the week after and they gave me a start date. HIP: What sort of support did you have? SY: To be honest, I didn’t really have much support, just Allan, a plumbing tutor at Lewisham College. HIP: Did you ever doubt that you could complete the apprenticeship? SY: Yes! The company I worked for went bust and I had to look for my own placement. My dyslexia was really bad at the time, so I never thought I would finish. HIP: How did you get through it? SY: I really doubted myself at first, but my tutor always believed in me, he always said to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. It was really tough but I’m really glad I persevered. HIP: How did you end up working for ESG? SY: I called an agency and started with them the following Monday. Through the agency, I ended up working for ESG as a self-employed plumber.

HIP: When did you become the ESG Apprentice Mentor and what does the role mean? SY: I became the Apprentice Mentor in 2021. My main role is to give the apprentices support and guidance. HIP: What’s changed for apprentices since you were one? SY: I feel there’s more support, more communication and more guidance now. HIP: HIP and ESG are co-sponsoring an all-female skills competition on International Women’s Day. What changes has the industry seen regarding female engineers in the last decade? SY: We have more female apprentices now but there’s still no equality. From what I’ve experienced it’s getting better but there’s still a way to go. HIP: What barriers do you see to people completing their qualification? SY: Often it’s circumstances: living on their own, can’t afford rent, travel, having to be independent, not having a family environment around them.

HIP: What do you think is the biggest factor for success in the industry? SY: I think it’s providing more support - more understanding of individual backgrounds, and more guidance. HIP: What do you wish you’d known when you were starting out? SY: That there are people out there willing to help and how to find them. HIP: Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why? SY: Darren Moore, he helped me personally and emotionally, and my foster carers. HIP: What piece of advice do you give to your apprentices? SY: You will hit brick walls, you will have down days but you just have to beat it and push through to the other side. HIP: What other job would you like to do? SY: I’ve never really thought of doing something else! I love my job and I’m so grateful that, despite the challenges, I’ve become the person that I am today.

“NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!”

TOP TIPS ■ Always take notes ■ Don’t be afraid to ask questions ■ Don’t let anyone put you down ■ Always keep your tools tidy

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE… Some people want to be a sportsperson when they grow up but Warrington Wolves star Chris Hill wanted to be a plumber! We spoke to him and his business associate Sarah – another career changer – about why.

“I DID MY TRAINING THEN SET UP MY BUSINESS – IT’S THE BEST THING I EVER DID” Chris Hill

C

hris Hill, Warrington Wolves star prop and England and Great Britain international, now co-owns and runs Warringtonbased Immerse Kitchens and Bathrooms. He got into plumbing when he joined Warrington in 2012, completing his level 2 and 3 at night school over three years.

"I've always had an eye to the future," says Chris, 33, whose Warrington testimonial match was in March 2021, "as it's just one bad tackle and your career's over. After all the highs and lows of professional rugby I realised I needed something for when I finished. I did my training then set up my business – it’s the best thing I ever did.” Chris was recently introduced to another career changer, teacherturned-property developer Sarah Corrie-Pearce, helping her realise her property dreams with her first major development.

HIP | CENTRAL HEATING EFFICIENCY

5 STEPS TO COMPLIANCE

Fernox produces handy kits that include everything needed to complete these tests. Results can be accessed, stored and monitored through the Fernox Water Quality Test App.

Adhering to BS 7593:2019 is the key to domestic central heating system efficiency, says Richard Crisp, Head of Chemistry at Fernox. Here, Richard explains how to comply. 1. CLEAN

Clean the system using a recognised method (mains pressure cleaning, gravity cleaning or power flushing) to remove any existing sludge, scale and debris. To aid the cleaning process, use the universal Fernox Cleaner F3 – or Power Cleaner F8.

2. GUARD

To prevent the buildup of contaminants, install an in-line filter to collect any sludge or debris that forms in the system. For the best results, choose a filter that can capture both magnetic and non-magnetic debris like the Fernox TF1 filters.

3. PROTECT

For long-term protection from corrosion and scale build-up, dose the system with a chemical inhibitor. Fernox Protector F1 combines organic, anodic and cathodic corrosion protection to ensure system longevity and efficiency.

“IT'S VITAL TO CHECK INHIBITOR LEVELS THROUGH THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE SYSTEM”

4. MAINTAIN

The in-line system filter should be cleaned regularly – ideally as part of the annual boiler service. For quick, easy and messfree sludge and debris removal, opt for sealed filters like the Fernox TF1 Sigma and TF1 Omega filters.

34

| WINTER 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK

5. TEST

It is vital to check inhibitor levels throughout the life cycle of the system. BS 7593:2019 states that an on-site test should be undertaken annually and a full laboratory analysis completed every five years.

HIP | BOILER BREAKDOWNS

STOP SLUDGE STOP BREAKDOWNS ADEY’s Colin Yearp discusses how apprentice and trainee installers can help protect heating systems from the damage caused by sludge and how to show customers the problem. TEST

Water testing helps educate homeowners on heating system water quality and opens doors to discussing treatment options before damage is caused. ADEY ProCheck® is the digital water test that provides access to key system water treatment results, including measuring for inhibitors, corrosion and pH levels. The results are instantly available on your smartphone, so it’s quick too!

“A SLUDGE-FREE HEATING SYSTEM HELPS RADIATORS GAIN UP TO 47% MORE HEAT”

40

CLEAN

Should ProCheck® flag an issue with the water quality, a full system flush will ensure a heating system is free from sludge; reducing the chances of the customer’s boiler breaking down and helping radiators gain up to 47% more heat. ADEY MagnaCleanse® Rapid Flush can remove virtually all the magnetite through its cleaning process. The fast and effective, yet gentle, flushing process makes it ideal for all systems.

TOP TIPS Water treatment best practice should be worked into every install, every service and every repair, whether the system is new or existing.

| WINTER 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK

PROTECT

Filtering out sludge before it goes through the vital parts of the heating system helps protect the boiler from breaking down, and means it runs more efficiently. ADEY MagnaClean® filters help to protect the system by capturing the suspended sludge as it passes through. To prevent magnetite from forming in the future, dosing the system with ADEY’s MC1® Protector will also help to keep corrosion at bay, protecting the system and ensuring longevity.

The presence of sludge in a heating system is the number one cause of central heating breakdown and accounts for 80% of boiler breakdowns in the first five years*. *Independent research commissioned by ADEY For more information visit: www.adey.com
