TRANSITIONS

Use transitions to make your video more engaging. There are plenty of tutorials online for different kinds of transitions, but a couple of our favourites are:

The hand snap: click your fingers in the same place in front of the camera whilst filming the before and after shots of your work, then cut the videos together so that it jumps from the before to the after shots as you click your fingers

Zoom transition: start filming your before shot and move your phone towards the centre point of the area you’re working on until the camera is almost touching it. After completing the project, create a similar shot but in reverse, starting with the camera as close to the same point as possible, and then moving it backwards until the whole project is in view. Edit these together, using a crossfade transition to make the effect look smoother.

DID YOU KNOW?

Pumps over 10 years old are usually far less efficient.

The good news is you can make a big difference on your customers energy bill by upgrading them to a newer circulator pump.

Up to 75% more efficient

The UPS3 can replace most old Grundfos circulators in appliances – such as boilers making it a reliable option for replacing thousands of old inefficient pumps currently in operation.

By Simply downloading the Grundfos GO REPLACE app and scanning your old pump, you can immediately find out if the UPS3 is a suitable replacement. Saving a significant amount of time and cost to boiler repair.

Up to 80% more efficient

The ALPHA3 is the most energy efficient domestic heating pump with an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of 0.17. It has never been quicker or easier for you to operate a pump in domestic heating systems. The ALPHA3 is fully-controlled via a smart device using the integrated Bluetooth communication.

With wireless hydronic balancing via GO BALANCE you can balance the heating system from your smart device and save your customers an additional 8% on their total energy cost.

COLD WATER SYSTEMS

Many people take for granted the seemingly endless supply of wholesome water to their homes. As a plumber, it’s your responsibility to make sure the cold water that reaches people’s taps is clean and ready for human consumption, in order to prevent severe illnesses. To do this, you will need a good understanding of the water regulations, water treatment and the supply and distribution of cold water.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

In this article, we will look at the two different types of cold water systems: direct and indirect.

Direct cold systems - The most commonly installed system, where appliances are fed ‘directly’ from the mains water supply.

Indirect cold systems - This is where all the appliances are fed ‘indirectly’, via a cistern. The incoming main feeds a cistern at high level and then the appliances are fed, indirectly, from that cistern.

THE PROS AND CONS

DIRECT SYSTEM

Pros

■ Mains pressure across both hot and cold supplies

■ Cheaper to install as there is less pipework needed, and reduced risk of frost damage

■ Drinking water is available from all draw-off points

Cons

■ If the mains is off, everything is off

■ More wear and tear on taps and valves due to high pressure

■ Water pressure noise can be a problem

Combination boiler Cold mains

Part of your plumbing qualification requires you to understand how cold water systems work. Please study this article to help with your revision.

“MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR COLD WATER SYSTEMS FOR YOUR EXAMS”
Direct mains fed system, generally smaller pipes and one pipe
REVISION GUIDE BY CHRIS WALLING Plumbing Lecturer at Coleg Llandrillo

INDIRECT SYSTEM

Pros

■ If the mains goes off, you still have a supply as long as there is water in the cistern

■ Can be pumped to improve it further

■ Reduced amount of system noise, due to low pressure

Cons

■ More pipework, so greater cost and higher risk of frost damage

■ If installed poorly, the cistern can be the source of contamination

■ Without a pump, pressure will still be low, but at least it works!

Which is the most commonly installed type of cold water system? Direct or indirect.

Name two advantages of an ‘indirect’ system.

Name two advantages of a ‘direct’ system.

If the water pressure in a property is below 1 bar which type of system would be most suitable?

What is the difference between a pressure gauge and a weir cup?

Go to hip-magazine.co.uk to download exercise answers for free

HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH TYPE OF SYSTEM TO INSTALL IN A PROPERTY?

The first thing you need to do is measure the water pressure at the property. To do this, attach a pressure gauge to a mains fed point like the kitchen cold tap, washing machine valve or garden tap. It’s a good idea to do this when demand on the mains is higher (in the morning, for example) so you get a reading that reflects the lowest pressure the system will receive. If you have to take a reading during the day, try and make an allowance for high demand. You need to measure static pressure (when all outlets are closed) and working pressure (when at least one outlet is open).

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the appliances you are planning to install. Most combi boilers and showers will require at least 1 bar of pressure to operate. If you have less than this you may want to consider an ‘indirect’ supply. Water supply pressure has improved in most areas but some areas still suffer from low pressure, especially in rural locations. If you have good mains pressure, you will probably want to install a ‘direct’ system.

I’M NOT JUST INSTALLING COLD WATER, I’M INSTALLING HOT WATER AND HEATING TOO!

For hot water and heating on a direct cold supply, you may want to think about a combi boiler or a system boiler with unvented hot water. This will also depend on the size of the property. If you have poor water pressure and are installing an ‘indirect’ cold supply then you may want to think about a heat only boiler with an open vented heating system and open vented hot water. You may want to consider adding a pump to boost the cold supply from the cistern and hot supply from the open vented hot water cylinder.

WHAT PRESSURE WILL AN ‘INDIRECT’ SUPPLY GENERATE?

For every metre of head height, the system will generate 0.1 bar of pressure. 10 metres of head height will give you 1 bar. Head height is measured vertically in a straight line between the point of use to the cistern. If you measure the height between the floor and ceiling on each storey in the building, you can accurately estimate the head height.

QUICK Q&A WITH WILO UK

Chris Gray from Wilo UK answers some of the latest questions asked by installers:

QWhat do the Wilo product names mean?

A

Names such as Yonos, Stratos, or Isar are taken from lakes or rivers around the world. Pico, Maxo, and Giga separate pump performance usually by size or duty, i.e., small, medium and large.

Q Can you put a pump head onto any pump body or vice versa?

A

No, they’re not interchangeable with other manufacturers. Many of the parts differ, such as the retaining bolts, the electrical connections and controls. Impellers often run in different directions too, so using the incorrect body would affect the flow of the water.

Q

Do pump heads have to be rotated the correct way around?

A

Yes. Glandless pumps use the pumped water to provide motor cooling and lubrication. Incorrect positioning of the pump can result in motor failure. We recommend studying the installation instructions to ensure the pump is correctly orientated.

Q Does Wilo offer training?

TOP TIP

Wilo is a German company and the W is pronounced as a V; ‘Vee-low’… Although, we don’t mind if you call us ‘Wy-low’!

A

Yes, we offer hands-on training at our purpose-built product training room in Burton-upon-Trent. I run one of our promotional vehicles that tour the country, visiting offices, distribution branches, colleges and construction sites, offering product demos and training.

For more information visit: www.wilo.co.uk . You can check out the handy pump replacement tool by visiting www.thepumpexchange.co.uk . On social media, search @wiloUK

POPULAR QUESTIONS

Q“Can Polypipe Smart Controls work with new systems?”

AYes, the controls can be paired with any Polypipe underfloor heating system. They offer smartphone app integration and are compatible with most Voice Assistants, for effective hands-free operation.

ON-SITE SUPPORT

Polypipe’s new site support team can help you - from questions about the advanced features of smart controls and wiring centres, to bleeding the primaries on a manifold system.

The underfloor heating training team was set up during lockdown when teaching at Polypipe’s Professional Development Centre, in Doncaster, was not possible.

The on-site support service has also provided training on Polypipe’s AutoBalancing Manifold. The stainless steel manifold patented valve technology incorporates automatic flow control technology, and the training has helped installers by demonstrating the correct pressure testing procedure.

Q“Can we have shorter, sharper video content that can be used as a quick reference guide?”

AYes, the new three-minute videos feature a Polypipe product manager providing an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide. There are more than 40 training videos covering most Polypipe systems as well as underfloor heating. This includes the push-fit plumbing products and soil systems.

The YouTube videos explain how Polypipe products work, how they should be used, and how they can help to solve an installation problem.

BRACES

“No client likes to see a plumber’s bum crack so after years of having to pull my trousers up I decided to give braces a try. They may be a bit of a trademark for me but they really do help. ‘Nowt as good as belt and braces’!”

“As someone who recently experienced a serious hand injury I know just how much our hands, eyes, ears and overall health are something we take for granted until something happens. Don’t be an idiot, protect yourself!”

“Blåckläder x1900 trousers are a fantastic comfortable fit for working in tight airing cupboards and attics, the fit of the knee pad holders hold the knee pad in the right place. You can see mine are showing their wear a little but definitely not showing any signs of breaking any time soon.”

GET READY TO IMPRESS

Heading to your first interview for a job or apprenticeship? Here are some top tips for making a great impression.

BEFORE YOU GO

1 DO YOUR RESEARCH

A potential employer will want to see evidence that you have shown an interest in their company before you arrive for the interview. Make sure you put the time into researching and finding out a little about the company you want to work for. A potential employer will be impressed that you have taken time to do some research.

2

CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE

Most companies will have a website that outlines the services they offer and what makes them different from their competition. Have a thorough look at any company’s site before you head off to the interview. Make notes of anything you think is important.

3

SIFT THROUGH THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA

Take a look at the company’s social media pages, especially on Facebook. Many companies will showcase their work on social media as a way to get more business. You’ll also find out how the company interacts with its customers, especially if they post customer reviews. This will give you a good idea of the kind of company they are and if they are right for you.

4

HAVE SOME QUESTIONS READY

An interview is a two-way thing, so make sure you have a few questions ready to ask. Try and make these about the company and how they will support you as a new starter or an apprentice. You can also ask them what the job entails. They may ask you why you think you are the right person for the job, so make sure you can answer that question! Most employers will be looking for someone who is reliable, with a positive attitude, someone who can ‘muck in’ and work as part of a team, or work on their own.

HIP | LIFE SKILLS
40 | WINTER 2023 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK
“DON’T
“ANSWER HONESTLY, RATHER THAN TRYING TO SECOND-GUESS WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR”

AT THE INTERVIEW

1

DRESS TO IMPRESS

You won’t be expected to arrive at the interview suited and booted, but take pride in how you present yourself. Workwear is fine, but make sure it’s clean and also ensure you have made an effort with your overall appearance. Looking scruffy gives a bad impression of the importance you place on the interview. Keep your hands out of your pockets and remember to smile!

2

.DON'T PANIC

Take a few deep breaths and take your time when answering questions. The interviewer is not there to catch you out, they just want to get to know you and see if you are a good fit for the company. Answer honestly, rather than trying to second-guess what they want to hear.

3

BE CONFIDENT

Sit up straight and make eye contact with the interviewer rather than looking at the floor. Show them that you are confident in yourself and able to communicate clearly. If you don’t feel confident, pretend that you are! Keep your head held high, you deserve this job just as much as the next person.

4

REMEMBER TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS

Don’t forget to ask the questions you thought of before the interview. This will show the interviewer that you are interested in the company. If anything has cropped up during the interview that you would like more details on, don’t be afraid to ask additional questions. This is as much your chance to find out about them as it is theirs to get to know you.

THE PLUMBER’S GLOSSARY H-M

L J H

HEAT LOSS CALCULATION

To calculate the heat loss within a room, you need to add together the losses (in BTUs) from all walls, windows, doors and ceilings. The final figure will tell you how much energy is needed in order to maintain the desired room temperature, consistently.

HOPPER HEAD

A 'hopper head', also known as a rainwater hopper, is positioned at the very top of a drainpipe and its purpose is to allow maximum water flow at times of heavy rainfall. Drainpipes are normally only about a third full when diverting water away, but the hopper head allows them to reach their capacity.

JOINTING COMPOUND

Pipe jointing compound is used on threaded pipe, to help create a seal. It works as both a lubricant and a sealant for threaded joints.

JUNIOR HACKSAW

Also known as a small hand saw, is designed for small jobs and can saw through a variety of materials - wood, metal, or plastic. The saw blades are held in place by using transverse locking pins positioned at each end of the frame, and then tensioned.

LEGIONELLA BACTERIA

Legionella bacteria, commonly found in water, multiply when temperatures are between 20-45°C and nutrients are available. Potentially fatal, Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria.

LOW CARBON STEEL (LCS)

Low carbon steels consist primarily of ferrite. Ferrite is the softest phase of steel which is largely responsible for the higher machinability of low carbon steel relative to other carbon and alloyed steels. Low carbon steel grades are easily weldable and is widely used within the plumbing and heating industry.

KKETTLING

IIMPERVIOUS

Also known as ‘central heating inhibitor’ is a chemical liquid used to protect a central heating system, it prevents sludge from forming and allows the boiler, radiators, and storage tank to work properly, keeping it working efficiently to prolong its lifespan.

IMMERSION HEATER SPANNER

An immersion heater spanner, also known as an immersion heater wrench, is a large, ring headed spanner designed to fit around an immersion heater element in a hot water cylinder.

This is a term used for the noise a boiler makes when there is something inside of the boiler obstructing or slowing down the flow of processes. The noise can sound like a mix of whistling, popping and bubbling. Usually heard while the appliance is running.

KINETIC

Kinetic energy is a property of a moving particle or object and depends on both its motion and mass. The kinetic energy of an object is the energy that it possesses due to its motion. Heat is a total of kinetic energy of atoms, ions or molecules.

MMAGNETITE

The term ‘magnetite’ describes the dissolved metal held in the water of a heating or hot water system. A ‘black sludge’ is formed and can often be found in radiator water, particularly in the lower parts of heating systems, such as the basement or ground floor.

MANOMETER

A manometer is an instrument used to measure and indicate pressure. Plumbers use it to measure the pressure in pipes, as low pressure may identify an undesirable leak.
