On Thursday 24th March a group of local residents and business owners came together at the Beach Hut cafe to witness the launch of the Southbourne-on-Sea Creative Hub. The aim of the Hub is to be a network of people involved or interested in the arts and creativity in the Southbourne area. Cathy Jones is spearheading the project which is based around the Bradleys Restaurant building. If all goes to plan, the property, offered by Foxes Property Management, will be refurbished appropriately and then made available for use as a community resource for a range of activities, group meetings and other cultural arts projects. Cathy told us more, “After some great feedback from our feature in the Feb/March edition of the magazine, I have been contacted by a number of local groups and I have also received a £500 grant from a ‘dragons den’ style start up fund set up by Bournemouth Council.” If you would like more information about the project please visit www.southbourne.net/hub or email Cathy directly southbournech@yahoo.co.uk

Exciting Offer from New Café

2 Full English Breakfasts for £5!

We had a chat with Clive and Lee, owners of The Beach Hut, a brand new licensed café in Southbourne-on-Sea. They bring a wealth of catering experience, most recently running The Bay Tree in Highcliffe for three and a half years. The café has a bright beach theme and also sells pictures and gifts. They focus on good value home cooked food offering breakfast, lunches, coffee and cakes, as well as Sunday lunches. As well as operating in the daytime, the boys have an evening events programme with a murder mystery dinner and a curry and quiz night planned. The Beach Hut is situated on Belle Vue Road at Southbourne crossroads, which is an area rapidly regenerating. In addition to the exciting new Soutbourne Creative Hub project (see page 4) a new Co-op food store will be opening in the “Beds are uzzz” unit. In case you needed another excuse to visit, cut out the advert below and take it to The Beach Hut and enjoy two Full English Breakfasts for an amazing £5.

Atisan Foods & Fine Moods only at The Larder House

Expect a warm welcome at The Larder House, owned by James and his dedicated team of craftsmen, Quentin, Luke and Jon. James told us more about their philosophy and unique cafe/ restaurant concept, “Artisan foods & fine moods summarises our ethos of showcasing quality and crafted ingredients whilst using traditional cooking techniques (our wood oven) and pairing them with specially sourced and creatively presented beverages. The knowledge and care within the team really aids in delivering the products we love. We aim to send our customers on a journey of discovery whilst creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere.” Everything you see inside was built by James and his team who each specialise in their particular area of The Larder House. For example, the wood burning oven is head chef Quentins domain and he is very passionate about the food he uses to produce his dishes, including artisan pizza, Jaffles (sandwiches) and the weekly specials each day. Moving over to the tea and coffee corner, you will be greeted by Luke who ran me through their selection, “We offer Cornish grown loose leaf teas and coffee sourced ethically direct from the farmers.” James told us more about the build, “It took us six weeks from getting the keys to build the new kitchen and bar area and we recently opened up the garden. It is such a great space and we’re looking forward to welcoming local residents and visitors to the area.” The Larder House offers two menus for during the day and evening meals, complemented by an extensive wine selection. Most Royal Wedding Street Parties Planned

The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will take place on Friday 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London. The day is destined to be a global media event and with a public holiday there are a number of street parties and events planned within Southbourne and across Bournemouth. Sara Rickett is the Events Coordinator for Bournemouth Tourism and told us about the number of street parties planned locally. Southbourne looks to be the most patriotic area with 6 street parties planned. Boscombe follows with 3 and just a handful across the rest of Bournemouth. At the time of going to press applications were still being submitted so these numbers might increase. Are you holding a Royal Wedding Street Party? If so we’d love to know about it and see photos from your event. Please email info@southbourne.net with your pics! The photos above are the official engagement photos released by the Palace and were taken by celebrity photographer Mario Testino at St. James’ Palace. Testino commented, "I am very happy to have been asked to cover this historic moment. I have never felt so much joy as when I see them together."

Are you a Hungry Husky?

The Hungry Husky just off Southbourne Grove in Grand Avenue is owned and run by Lee Staines and his friendly team. Offering a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, baguettes, hot and cold food and a selection of cakes, the Hungry Husky is a welcome addition to Southbourne-on-Sea. We spoke to Lee about the past year of trading, “We’re extremely happy with how everything is running and the locals have been great, offering advice and coming back to grab a bite to eat or ordering lunch to their home or office.” Officially opened on 12th April 2010, a year later Lee is celebrating by offering a FREE slice of home made cake with any purchase on 12th April 2011. We asked Lee what advice he would give to other businesses starting up in the area, “Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Stick to what you’re passionate about and the people will come!”

Southbourne’s Local History by John Cresswell

Possibly the oldest feature in Southbourne is the centuries old track made by the early inhabitants of Holdenhurst who walked directly south to the coast to take part in the mackerel harvests for extra money – and perhaps a bit of smuggling. The final quarter mile, still called Fisherman’s Walk, led to ‘Sandy Hollow’, a slope allowing easy access to the beach. As the Grove and Seabourne Road area started to be developed at the turn of the twentieth century, many residents realised that the area would be without a public park. Most of southern Southbourne along the coast had been planted with pine trees by the early landlords. The plantations were dense with hardly a yard between trunks. As the new estates were being carved out with the axe, residents made a plea to the Council to save not only the track but a portion of land to the side. At a cost of £6,500 this was laid out by the District Surveyor, Edward Ingamells. On 26th May 1913, the Mayor of Bournemouth at the time duly opened Fisherman’s Walk for “the use of the inhabitants of Bournemouth for ever.” Over time, a central bandstand was added for brass band concerts, and in 1937 a rest garden was created at the seaward end. The pine trees were thinned and deciduous trees planted, such as oak, chestnut and holly. During the past couple of decades the park declined in appearance with spending cuts. A turn-about came with formation of the Friends of Fisherman’s Walk in 2006. Since then the Friends have introduced more planting, public art and now provide regular community events and obtained a Green Flag award in 2010. For more information about wildlife and the Friends of Fishermans Walk please visit www.fishermanswalk.co.uk

50 Years of Experience

Property agents Bournecoast celebrate 50 years

Established in 1960, Bournecoast is a family operated independent property agents, who manage, sell and let holiday and residential properties, providing specialist knowledge of the buy-to-let market and what makes a good investment. Bournecoast has been family run for 50 years and was established by Major W G Webb and June Webb in 1960. Over the past 50 years they have invested in a skilled workforce, ensuring it’s award winning team enjoys dealing with people and property whilst ensuring their knowledge of the whole property market is second to none. We spoke to Des Simmons who told us more, “Properties and landlords come in many guises. There are those owners who have a vast portfolio and look for capital growth and ROI. There are also landlords happy with regular rental income from a long-term let on a renewable Assured Shorthold Tenancy. However a niche market that more and more landlords are taking advantage of is the holiday letting market. There are many properties that with some simple advice are suitable to enter into the holiday market to increase their rental income. Other investors are keen to develop their investment and to produce a higher quality property that lends itself perfectly to the holiday market. Finally there are those who have no idea where to start. The test here is the ability of Bournecoast Property Agents to spot the requirements of the landlord and advise accordingly. So, if you, a friend or family member is considering entering into the holiday lettings market or property as an investment opportunity get in touch with Bournecoast and take advantage of their local advisers and over 50 years of experience.
