Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area A High Street High! Despite challenging economic times, Southbourne-on-Sea continues to buck the trend and have very few empty shops. The national average is for 14.3% of units to be empty on the UK high street*. At the time of going to press there were no empty shop units (some were being fitted out) on Southbourne Grove and only a handful on Southbourne Road. Recent additions have included Deli Rocks, a print shop and a pet grooming centre. A number of other units are under development and this winter we can expect to see an independent Tea Specialist, a Costa Coffee and some other exciting new businesses open. As ever, we encourage you to support your local shops and do as much Christmas shopping in Southbourne as possible. * source: Local Data Company.

Local company delivers the goods

This Autumn on the BBC the Hairy Bikers bring their inimitable style to the issue of modern meals on wheels’ services. Aware that some councils are stopping the service and of its sometime less than glamorous reputation, they are working to reinvigorate and promote it. They identify many problems with existing services and are promoting the benefits of fresh food and human contact. Luckily, here in Dorset, we are very lucky to have a firm that already do all the things required. Forerunner Personal Catering has been delivering meals to older people in Bournemouth for 20 years. All their food is prepared fresh, every day, and delivered straight from their ovens to the client’s door, and even onto your lap, if you wish! The food is delivered on a proper porcelain plate and immediately dispels any myths or overhanging images of old-fashioned meals on wheels services. Secondly, Forerunner know that for many of their clients, the Forerunner driver is the only person they will see that day, so their visit is very important. They are happy to stop and take a minute to make sure that all is OK and the client has everything that they need.

Helping people in their homes

Samantha Acton has been the owner of Domestic Angels for nearly a decade. The Angels provide cleaning and home help services to the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch areas. From weekly cleaning to spring-cleans, ironing to general housework, they’ll take the work off your hands and a load off your mind. Their home help service provides a friendly pair of hands for those requiring extra attention. Daily visits help with meals, cleaning and shopping, but above all they provide a trusted friendly face. Gaynor Tilley of Southbourne told us of her experience with Domestic Angels, "I hired a cleaner from Domestic Angels over 3 years ago and throughout that time Samantha has always provided great staff who do a thorough job. Since then the way Samantha also dealt with a delicate family situation in caring for an elderly family member highlighted the 'personable' side to this business. I know I can trust Domestic Angels and Samantha to do a great job every week." If you would like to talk about how Domestic Angels could help you in your home, call Samantha on 01202 267350.

Bournemouth Beaches Holiday lettings agents

We spoke to Assistant Sales Manager Natalie to find out more about Bournemouth Beaches Ltd. Established in 2005 and keen to offer a fresh, new approach to holiday lets, Bournemouth Beaches has grown steadily year on year to gain an impressive portfolio of holiday properties in Bournemouth and Sandbanks. The company prides itself on offering excellent, friendly service as standard with a strong emphasis on their true ‘full management’ product. The company strive to promote a ‘can do’ culture. Having created an impressive website where guests can book online, and have the benefit of an online concierge Bournemouth Beaches have met their 90% summer occupancy targets. The company has two branches and is the only agent to have a town centre branch. The main Poole Hill branch is open 7 days a week and the company also boasts its own in house commercial laundry and linen hire service as well as in house maintenance and out of hours response service. The company intends to expand carefully so as to maintain its current high occupancy rates and is also in negotiations to make new partnerships within the business to further expand its range of services. Natalie also told us more about their involvement in Southbourne. “We are working to generate more interest in the Southbourne area. From our involvement in the Southbourne Creative Hub project to the development and promotion of holiday lets in the area. I believe Southbourne is a great area but needs more promotion.” Natalie and the staff of Bournemouth Beaches Ltd can be contacted on 01202 296400 7 days a week or visit www.bournemouthbeaches.com

29

HOLIDAY LETTINGS - A WHOLE NEW SEASON In holiday lettings there are two seasons - summer and winter. Whilst we are keeping your income flowing with winter lets our sales staff are busy selling the summer season to maintain our impressive 90% occupancy rate. Without a good winter let the summer profits can be lost. It is good that we are the only agent to have two branches including the only one in the town centre. We also offer in house maintenance and laundry services, and are the only agent who publish their occupancy rates. Add this to being open 7 days a week and having a manned out-ofhours contact service and you'll see that we go the extra mile. This year we successfully supplied, and vetted winter tenants for all of our holiday proper ties with no or minimal voids. Next year we are changing our check in service to give greater flexibility to our clients and maximize sales. Bournemouth Beaches - We are all about people!

Mince Pie Recipe Have a tasty Christmas

There’s nothing like homemade mince pies, and with our easy to follow recipe there’s no excuse not to have a go at making your own this Christmas.

Instructions

Ingredients 350g/12oz quality mincemeat 200g/7oz plain flour 40g/1½oz golden caster sugar 75g/2¾oz ground almonds 125g/4½oz unsalted butter 1 large free-range egg a little milk, to glaze

1. Lightly butter a 12-hole pie/cupcake tin. 2. Prepare mincemeat (or buy some good quality pre-made). 3. Place the flour, sugar, almonds and butter in a food processor and process briefly until resembling breadcrumbs, then slowly add the egg. 4. Wrap mixture in clingfilm and chill for an hour. 5. Thinly roll out the pastry on a floured surface. 6. Cut out 12 circles with a fluted pastry cutter. 7. Press circles gently into each hole, then fill level with the mincemeat. 8.
