Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area Plans Underway for the Southbourne Creative Hub Cathy Jones, a freelance community arts professional told us more about an exciting new creative venture. “The Southbourne Creative Hub will be a flexible venue which can be used for a variety of activities from dance, painting and sculpture to businesses holding open days, birthday parties and many other uses. I started conducting research into the use of empty commercial premises in the autumn of 2010 with the aim of starting the project locally. It was then by chance I saw a notice at the former Bradley’s Restaurant at Southbourne Crossroads asking for proposals from the local community”. Cathy is now in the process of contacting numerous local organisations, including the local Business Association, BCTC and the Council Arts Development Office to get this project off the ground and make it a viable community led resource. If you would like more information or to get involved, contact Cathy on email: SouthbourneCH@yahoo.co.uk New Journey Planner Launched Getting from A to B has now become that little bit easier with Yellow Buses, who recently launched a new Route Planner. The user friendly planner takes your postcode, address or prominent location and your destination to plan the best route. Jenni Wilkinson, Head of Marketing, said: “We’re very excited at the launch of this journey planner which reflects our image as the Brighter Bus Company. It represents a massive step forward in the information we can offer our passengers." Give it a try: www.bybus.co.uk

Top Ten Sales Tips
Getting ready for Spring sales with Slades
Spring is the best time of year to put your property up for sale. Before you do, take a look at the top 10 tips on how best to present your home for viewings from Slades. 1. Make a good first impression – The front door and hallway are the first thing a buyer will see. Give the front door a fresh coat of paint or clean and remove unnecessary clutter, muddy shoes and coats. 2. Clear purpose - Make sure every room shows its original purpose, You may be using the dining room as a playroom, but clear all the toys away and set the table to show how many people can be seated. 3. Lighten up – If you have a dark room consider redecorating in a light colour or add a table lamp to the room for viewings. 4. Let the air in - Musty-smelling rooms are off-putting. Open windows and don’t forget to air rarely used rooms. 5. De-clutter - Potential buyers want to see more of your home. If it’s cluttered, the first impression may be that it’s cramped. 6. Floor space - It’s particularly important to take everything off the floor as carpet clutter makes a room look smaller. 7. The pets have to go - Your puppy may be the cutest ever, but dishes of pet food in the kitchen are a complete turn-off, as are little accidents left on the lawn. 8. Depersonalise – The best way to sell a home is to keep it simple, consider depersonalising rooms and decorating in a neutral colour. 9. Kerb Appeal – The outside of your home can entice or put off potential viewers, make sure gardens are tidy and paintwork is in order. 10. Leave your agent to it – Make sure your agent has access by supplying a set of keys & try not to be present for viewings.

Crime Data Revealed New website reveals Southbourne’s low crime rate
A new website has made available, for the first time, data on crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) happening in your area. So what does www.police.uk make of Southbourne? We performed a search for the local area, the results are for December 2010. In total there were 153 street level and anti-social behaviour crimes in the area circled on the map. The most prevalent crime was ASB with 75 incidents recorded however there were no robberies and only 5 burglaries. Our area compared very favourably with others in Bournemouth. We looked at a similar sized area of Boscombe and found 551 crimes, 457 in Winton and Charminster and 173 in Christchurch. One criticism of the website is that the map only displays incident data within a set circular radius, so there is some overlap in data, however the street level accuracy is very impressive. The statistics on the website are provided by Dorset Police on a regular basis. Chief Constable Martin Baker told us, “While crime across our Force area is at a 12-year low, we hope that by making this additional information available, we can encourage individuals and communities to take further action to prevent crime. We also want to raise awareness of what we are doing locally with our partners to cut crime and disorder and we particularly want people to get involved in working with, or supporting their local Safer Neighbourhood Teams to tackle crime and ASB. As well as allowing people to find out information about crime in their local area, it should also help people to hold their local Safer Neighbourhood Team and our partners to account for the action jointly we are taking to deal with issues that matter locally.”
11
Markers are placed approximately to protect the identity of victims and some markers overlap. See police.uk for the full breakdown by street.
How Does it Work? By typing in your postcode you can view crime and ASB statistics for your location as well as details of the Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team. The online map shows figures for all crime including burglary, robbery, violence, vehicle crime, other crime and anti-social behaviour at the touch of a button. Safeguards are in place to protect the identity of individuals and victims of crime. Meet the Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team To find out what the local team is doing to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour call 07825 522687 or 01202 222222 (for emergency calls please dial 999). Founded in 2002 by owner Samantha Acton, this local Southbourne business has its heart in one concept, people. Domestic Angels specialise in helping in the home, carrying out regular house work, intensive spring cleans and now providing a home help service to lend a helping hand at home with daily life. "The client is our main focus and we concentrate heavily on the local community, doing our bit to help those who need it. Sugar Mango
Supporting World Orphan Week
Southbourne based jewellery and accessories boutique, Sugar Mango, are doing their bit for charity during World Orphan Week (14th February – 20th February). The shop has close connections with a community in India, where they use local artisans to make all of the handmade items on sale in store. Owners of Sugar Mango, Alison Timmons and Heather Martyn, are planning in-store fundraising activities during the week, as well as selling a limited edition necklace which they have designed specifically for the occasion to give 100% of the sales to the SOS Children Village in India. The necklace is called Believe, Hope & Care and can be purchased in-store or from their website, www.sugarmango.com Alison commented, “This is a charity that I am personally involved with as I have been sponsoring a little girl in India at the local SOS Village. I have bought the materials that we use for our jewellery from this area for the past 4 years. I am planning a trip to India at the end of March, when I will be visiting the orphanage again. It’s gratifying to be able to go back and see what improvements have been made over the year, but this village still needs further support to continue its good work.” Find out more about the planned events at Sugar Mango by visiting Alison & Heather in store today. You can also make a donation to the SOS Childrens Villages charity via the Just Giving website: www.justgiving.com/sugar-mango

War and Peace in Southbourne? Leo Tolstoy is said to have stayed at Tuckton in 1894. He would have been the guest of Countess Tchertkov who was enjoying the health-giving properties of burgeoning Southbourne-on-Sea. Shortly after this, her son, Vladimir Tchertkov, expelled by the Russian regime, came to Tuckton. He was a disciple of Tolstoy’s philosophical teachings and brought with him manuscripts of banned publications. By 1901 he was joined by other exiles and they set up a commune at 61 Saxonbury Road. They bought the former pumping station in Iford Lane to house printing presses which ran off thousands of copies of Tolstoy’s works. During the troubled times of the Great War, the 85-year old countess fell foul of the Tsarist regime. Escaping rouble-less from Russia, she returned to ‘Slavanka’ in Belle Vue Road. Her local friends provided for her to remain at Southbourne where she practised and promoted her Christian doctrine. In 1921 ‘Slavanka’ was sold to a syndicate and became a Christian Conference Centre, with the Countess remaining until she died in 1922. The original house was later expanded to accommodate the Centre’s facilities but it closed in 2006. ‘Slavanka’ was subsequently demolished and the site is now occupied by Sunrise Senior Living. A plaque on the outer wall commemorates the work of Countess Tchertkov. Article submitted by local historian John Cresswell.
