As our seventh edition goes to print it is my sad duty to report that this is the last magazine for one of the Toms. Over the past year Tom Rogers has played a vital role in setting up this magazine and he has done an excellent job in meeting, greeting and reporting the local news. Tom now returns to Bournemouth University to complete his degree and I join all the local traders and residents in wishing him the best of luck in the future. SoSBA’s 1st Anniversary Celebration On 21 June a collection of local business people, traders and residents came together to celebrate the work of the Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association over the past year since it’s formation. Supported by the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade, the group is made up of local business owners who regularly meet to discuss issues arising and to establish a support network to improve trade on the high street. The Mayor of Bournemouth attended the event, hosted by Sunrise of Soutbourne, congratulating everyone who has supported the group and SoSBA co-ordinator, Heather Martyn who gave a round up of all their achievements. Since its formation in March 2010, the group has achieved a great deal, including publishing a local map/directory, a website and they have helped tackle a number of issues regarding empty shops in the area.

That's the question currently being asked of local businesses. Our area is one of four districts along the Bournemouth coast exploring the benefits of setting up a Business Improvement District (BID). There are already 130 successful BIDs around the country bringing greater prosperity and long term sustainability to these areas. The contributions from the 770 eligible businesses would create a significant pot of money (over £330,000 pa) which has far greater impact than spending this money individually. The ideas put forward by local businesses will be discussed, costed and prioritised over the coming months through local focus groups. These will feed in to a formal business plan, which it is expected will go to a ballot this autumn. Des Simmons from Bournecoast and chairman of the BID Steering Group commented, “This BID is so important to the local area & we expect it to have a direct impact on local businesses.” Find out more www.bournemouth-in-business.com

and a refurbished restaurant..

Tomlin’s has a new lease of life after Southbourne residents and new owners Paricia and Jason gave it a new lick of paint and introduced a tasty new menu. We spoke to Patricia about all the developments and what they plan to do in the future, “We’ve done a lot of work inside the premises opening up the entrance area to complement the takeaway service and we spent a lot of time updating the restaurant area too.” Tomlin’s is open 7 days a week from 11.30am to 9.30pm and offers responsibly sourced, cooked to order, fish with a variety of other classic menu options. “We just wanted to keep the menu simple and fresh and it’s been really well received by local residents”, Patricia told us. If you’re in need of a quick lunch then takeaway is available or new to Tomlin’s is a local home delivery service.

Making Your Food Interactive! from the farm to your fridge

We caught up with Oli from boxedveg.tv to find out more about this unique local service. We asked Oli what it’s all about? ”We cook seasonal produce on the website every week, whatever we cook goes into the weekly box. It works out cheaper than Tesco (see our website for a comparison). Lastly it’s paid for in advance online and then collected at your local collection point which is Potters Butcher in Southbourne!” Oli explained how the boxes are fresher and cheaper than supermarkets, “the medium box should be enough veg for 4 to share for a week and you will save about £7 on the same produce at supermarkets. I buy direct from the farms and also import directly, then distribute the same day - so it’s not hanging around inmassive distribution warehouses. We use asparagus from farms in Christchurch, watercress and spinach from Hampshire. Our boxes always contain fresh herbs, garlic and chilli's, things that make cooking exciting!” We asked Oli more about his background and the interactive videos on the website. “I used to work as a chef in chalets before selling fresh produce in London for the last five years at NewSpitalfields market. With the interactive videos I wanted to create an What’s In The Box? informal cooking show where what you see is You can find out what you can get delivered. The videos show me what's in next weeks and Tom larking around at food markets and in box on Thursday the kitchen, where possible we will film it being evenings so you can pulled out of the ground by the farmer! We cook choose if you want with it, then our customers get the same stuff to to join in or not. Find out cook with and enjoy!” on Facebook Boxed Vegtv

Southbourne Creative Hub Cathy Jones provides the latest developments

The ‘Hub’, based on Southbourne Crossroads, is a not-for-profit organization providing a network for all those with an interest in the arts and creativity in and around the Southbourne area. It will also provide a space for regular network gatherings, occasional events, showcases and fundraising, classes, rehearsals and practice. This will all be achieved by working with local businesses, public and voluntary sectors to ensure that the arts play an important and vibrant role in the Southbourne community and environment. It is an incredibly busy time at the moment, juggling everything necessary to get the doors open, but we are very close now to announcing an opening date.

S O U T H B O U R N E C R E A T I V E

H U B

The last Hub meeting was very well attended and we are delighted so many residents, arts professionals, businesses, the Council and others are excited about the Hub as a venue and as a network of people in Southbourne, dedicated to arts and arts in the community. Deb and Phil have joined me as Directors and Anne, Jackie, Gill, Jo and Sam have come forward to form a Steering Committee. Our new logo has been designed by graphic artist Sarah, whilst artist Steve and local decorator Roly have plans for the outside of the building and Hilary has given us a unique collection of Sotheby’s Art At Auction books for the Resource Corner. Bournemouth Council and the business community have been fantastic, including Sue from Ideal Business Solutions who has donated an incredible amount of office furniture, the Southbourne Magazine for providing our webspace, www.southbourne.net/hub and Bournemouth Beaches for their generosity in offering the venue for community use.

We are working with Domestic Angels on several projects including a collaboration with local charity Knightstone Futures, who support local residents faced with isolation, whose clients would like some arts and crafts activities. So, thank you to everyone who has helped so far and to those who have offered help, involvement or simply support, in the future. Sam Acton, director of Domestic Angels is helping to support the Hub project by becoming the first corporate sponsor. Sam told us more, “Domestic Angels are privileged to become the very first corporate sponsors of the Hub. The decision to sponsor the Hub was easily made. As a local business with a committed interest in the Southbourne community, the Angels and clients form a sizable network across the area that will benefit from the output of the Hub. This includes activities from the transformation of ugly shop fronts on The Grove to combating isolation in the home, the possibilities are endless and all positive for Southbourne.”

New owners at Westcotes House We welcome Ross, David & Graham

19

Westcotes House is a large 6 bedroom guest house in a prime location on Overcliff Drive, overlooking Southbourne’s Blue Flag beach. We spoke to new owners Ross, David and Graham about their new venture, “Having lived next door to Westcotes House for some years we have always had our eye on the guest house. When the previous owners suggested they were ready to step away, we jumped at the opportunity. We are new to the industry but are keen to engage with other local businesses and the local community, who will hopefully recommend us to friends & family visiting. We’re really excited to start welcoming visitors and have lots of new ideas to bring in over the coming weeks.” We asked Ross what local attractions he would recommend to his guests, “It would have to be Hengistbury Head, the great selection of local cafes and restaurants, the river at Christchurch and of course the fantastic beach directly in front of our guest house.”

Shelley Manor Dental Services for all ages

Shelley Manor Dental is a new private dental clinic located on Beechwood Avenue and provides a complete range of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry services for patients of all ages and families. Dr Tim Doyle grew up in the New Forest and went to school in Southbourne, where he now lives with his family. Tim told us about his passion for teeth, “I find that the best solution to tooth decay and gum disease is to prevent it in the first place. If we must cut teeth to repair them then we believe in preserving as much of the healthy tooth tissue as possible. We take a long term view so the more tooth structure that can be preserved today, the more teeth we have to work with 20 years down the line should further treatment be necessary.” At Shelley Manor Dental they appreciate the importance of an attractive smile to patients and offer high quality full mouth restorations including veneers and implants, and cosmetic New surgery with state of the art equipment treatments such as teeth whitening and contouring. Additionally Dr Tim Doyle's area of special interest is neuromuscular dentistry, “This is the treatment of temporo-mandibular joint disorder (i.e. jaw joint & "bite" problems), which can also be an underlying cause of chronic headache.” To book an appointment or to speak with the Shelley Manor Dental Practice you can visit their website, www.shelleymanordental.co.uk or call 01202 443882.

Southcoast Property Bournemouth’s newest letting agents

Southcoast Property (Dorset and Hampshire) Limited, owned and run by Father and Son Philip & Kieran Piper, have moved into new premises on Poole Road in Westbourne. Officially opened on 11th April 2011, Kieran gave us an insight into the opening of this truly unique office and his thoughts on how the lettings industry should operate. “We look to offer a comfortable relaxed environment, personal approach and still provide a complete, professional service. This all started with the design of the office using well established local companies to assist us in establishing what has been described by many as a fabulous office. Many thanks go to our interior designers Di Lusso of Canford Cliffs who helped create the visual impact of the office and Broadview Blinds who equally worked to our high standards and created a truly striking shop frontage and internal bespoke window display”. Further to this he added “Too many agents offer an average service and adopt the opinion of it’s only lettings! As members of the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (A.R.L.A) and the Property Ombudsmen we work to the highest standards set in an unfortunately unlicensed industry where so many people can call themselves Lettings Agents. With my experience in setting up and developing other successful letting departments and the 30 years within property and business that my father has, local knowledge and genuine care for people and their properties this was undoubtedly the perfect opportunity to provide the service that people deserve”.

Summer Season of Events at Sunrise

of Southbourne

As the beaches and seafront begin to fill with locals and tourists, Sunrise of Southbourne a short walk away - is organising an exciting schedule of events and entertainment for its residents and the wider public. On Saturday 9th July there is a Garden Party centering on the residence's beautiful landscaped gardens. There will be refreshments all round and live entertainment. Sunrise of Southbourne is built for senior living, and designed by experts to create the ideal environment for that purpose. Each Sunrise, is designed from the foundations up, to be senior-friendly, without the usual institutional feel. A freshly prepared menu of food is served, restaurant-style three times a day. The need for challenge and mental stimulation is catered for by a daily programme of 5 organised activities, hobbies and entertainments. The design of the residence, the operation and activities all encourage social contact. "Our events are just one of many reasons why we consider ourselves a quality-of-life home rather than a normal care home," added Ray. Anyone interested in finding out more about Sunrise of Southbourne's events and gaining an invitation should see www.sunrise-care.co.uk or by call the residence directly on 01202 437600.

Is there an art in creating the best senior living & care? Why is Sunrise so different from others offering senior living and care? It is not because our award winning residences are beautiful both inside and out. It is not because our suites are wonderfully appointed, or that our care is second to none. It is not even because we organise five activities every day, hobbies, entertainments and trips. Or that there is a coffee bar and a number of comfortable lounges. There is not one single element that makes Sunrise so successful in creating quality of life for seniors. It is the skillful combination of them all. The net result is that our beautiful residences are full of seniors who feel well, cared for and enjoy every day. Get in touch with us today and discover how Sunrise turns senior living and care into a fine art. 42 Belle Vue Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth, Dorset BH6 3DS
