Southbourne Creative Hub Update In September 2011 the Mayor of Bournemouth officially opened The Southbourne Creative Hub. With an evening of music, dance and an art exhibition mixed with plenty of laughter, it was a taste of what was to come. Local journalist Fi Holloway talked to its founder Cathy Jones. “The idea has grown from tiny seeds. Such as wishing it was easier to connect with other creative people; the desire to promote local artists and provide arts activities on peoples’ doorsteps; and above all, to get together to celebrate all things creative. Our landlords, Bournemouth Beaches Limited, provided us with the perfect venue, a space to house resources for community events, professional development meetings, special projects and a host of activities We were also lucky to have support and advice from Council departments, including Economic Regeneration, Community Regeneration, Safer & Stronger Communities, Parks, Libraries, and Arts Bournemouth. And it doesn’t stop there; we receive invaluable support from local companies such as Supply Shack, Domestic Angels, Studio Schotz, Wessex Healthy Living and Pure Glow Media .” “But above all it has been the enthusiasm of the people who use the Hub that has overwhelmed us. We now offer over 20 activities per week and will soon start cabaret evenings and coffee morning talks. Our youngest users are toddlers Photos: Mary Lune and the eldest – 92!” We have won a small grant from the Green Goals Partnership, distributed via the Council's Safer and Stronger Communities department, for Phase 1 of the Southbourne Crossroads Community Garden on a piece of land we are adopting from the Council's Parks department. This will be a long term project with the first phase happening this Spring, with the ambition of creating a space where local people can be inspired to get creative by exploring our local history and environment.

SUN SAT FRIDAY WEDNESDAY TUESDAY MONDAY

The Weekly Programme

Proving Your Children are Amazing We spoke to Dr Edward and Connie Rothman, the owners of the Bournemouth centre, located near the beautiful beaches of Southbourne. Connie explained the service, “Our goal was to create a place where you and your children feel safe and comfortable as soon as you walk in the door. Our mission is to provide a space where children can come to gain confidence, motivation and discover the fun of learning. Maths and English language skills can be a portal for self-discovery, self-reliance and accomplishment leading to success. Learning in our centre is fun, supportive and we can accommodate students from primary through secondary school.” Connie has worked in public libraries in the U.S. and England since 1998 and has managed the Southbourne library since 2003, working closely with local schools, teachers and parents to foster a love of reading and learning. With a BA degree in liberal arts, post-graduate teaching education and background as a teaching assistant in Montessori schools for children ages 3 to 12, Connie has a passion for fostering learning so that each child can realise his or her full potential. Edward has worked in health care and university based education as a senior lecturer, programme leader for a BSc in exercise science, MSc in sports and rehabilitation and as a clinical director. He has served as the chairman of the Board of Governors of a private Montessori middle school for children ages 11, 12 and 13. With undergraduate degrees in English and biology, a doctorate in a clinical discipline, and an MA in academic practise, Edward realises that all learning must be directed to meet individual needs and must excite each student’s natural curiosity.

Edward adds, “The success of the NumberWorks'nWords students in the classroom and in exams is proof of the effectiveness of the programmes. Find out how your child is doing and book a free assessment with us today.” Call 01202 433673 to get started.

17 What ‘s at Seafield Gardens? Seafield Gardens covers an area of 2.4 hectares and provides recreation and sports facilities. Originally a turf allotment, the council took on the ownership in 1923 and 1928, with bowls and croquet facilities already in place and the Southbourne Bowls Club being set up in 1910. The centrepiece of the park and surrounding urban area is the privately-owned water tower which is designated a Grade II Listed building. The park is maintained by ground staff who ensure, together with the Community Parks Officers, that the Gardens are safe to use and provide a pleasant environment for relaxation. The Gardens provide a range of facilities for a range of ages including bowls, tennis and associated pavilions, catering, and a children’s play area for young people’s recreation. Parts of the park are also used for informal recreation, in particular by young people and dog walkers. The community is involved in the management of the bowls and tennis facilities through the Seafield Gardens Management Trust. The Fellowship Club also meets regularly for comradeship and for the playing of tabletop games. See www.bowlssouthbourne.co.uk

I Do!

and a ‘Can Do’ attitude at Bournemouth Beaches “I DO” are the famous words that bring two people together in marriage – hopefully for life! While they are two very short words, they form a huge commitment. Outside of the couple getting married, there will also be many people who have lots to ‘DO’ to ensure the big day runs smoothly. For many of the services that surround a wedding, there will be numerous big days each year, all of which must run to perfection. Sash told us what Bournemouth Beaches do, “Here at Bournemouth Beaches we also have much to ‘do’ to ensure our guest’s stays are perfect. From wedding party accommodation to fishing holidays and from walking holidays to short breaks we need to ‘do’ everything required to ensure our customer has a great stay.” They are also getting ready for a busy season, “Spring is possibly our busiest time as we will be preparing our properties for the new holiday season. Deep cleans, upgrading if required, decorating, new furnishings maybe – it all needs to be thoroughly checked and prepared for a busy few months. Our sales staff are also working hard taking a large amount of bookings, advising guests on our properties, and assisting with their travel plans. We now organise airport transfers meaning that our guests are in our care even before they arrive to Bournemouth or Poole. We also will start to recruit for our housekeeping department to increase our current staff levels in readiness for the nonstop season ahead – so if you are or know a really good, reliable cleaner then please call us.” “This year once again sees an increase in the properties and services we are offering so both our training and staffing levels have increased to meet the challenges with a smile. For the many holiday accommodation landlords in the area we are pleased to announce that bookings for the new season are going very well and the year is set to be very successful. Just spare a thought for all those people who ‘do’ what needs to be done in order for the thousands of tourists who visit each year to have a great stay!”
