The centre will offer an exhibition area for archaeology, ecology and geology celebrating 14,000 years of Bournemouth’s prehistory from the Stone Age to the present day. Further landscaping work will create outdoor learning areas and a wildlife garden for bird ringing and pond studies. How to Improve Reading Comprehension with Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords

Here is a strategy that has good evidence of success in improving reading comprehension for children. It is based on work completed by Marjorie Siegel, a professor of education at Columbia University and has been researched by Trevor Cairney, among other educationalists and researchers. We are highlighting this because we identified it as a need by a number of children who come to our tutoring centre. Interestingly, difficulty with reading comprehension is not limited to just those students who come to us for help with English. It is also a problem for students who find word problems in maths challenging. “Sketch to Stretch” involves having students draw pictures while they read and after they read. It is intended to “stretch” students’ understanding of what they are reading and increase their comprehension of the material. It also gives children a non-word based method to affect their appreciation of what they are reading, fiction and non-fiction. This may help some children who are challenged by the written word. Here are the steps we suggest you have your children try: • Draw a picture to show what happened • Draw a picture of the character • Draw a picture to show what the character or person did, saw, heard, thought • Draw a picture of what might happen next or about the conclusion This strategy may very well improve your child’s comprehension over time and develop an appreciation of what she or he is reading.

‘Angel’ Janet makes a real difference Domestic Angels celebrates a decade of caring and cleaning

Customers and staff have been quick to pay tribute to Domestic Angels, the Southbourne-based home help service, as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. “I am a long term cancer patient and on top of the gradual deterioration of everything else in the last few months, it has got so that I’m no longer able to do the housework,” says Zena Keyworth from Southbourne. “Janet, our Angel, is always so friendly and pleasant and does such a good job for us - it makes a real difference to our lives. Janet is like one of the family - she is more of a carer than a cleaner.” Philippa Davis from Canford Cliffs added “It’s extremely professional, reliable and nothing is too much trouble and being a locally conceived and grown business, I think is very important.” Samantha Acton, who started Domestic Angels in 2002, told us what the company’s services mean to her customers. “I always wanted us to provide more than what we actually do. I’d like to thank Janet and all our Angels who have embraced the philosophy that people come first and their needs cannot be boiled down into 15-minute time slots.”
