What a Shokk!

Revolutionary new youth gym opens in Southbourne

SHOKK is a brand new dedicated youth gym on Southbourne Grove, above Sainsbury’s Local in the high street. Owned by siblings and business partners Nathan and Dominique Geary, they’re extremely passionate about the area and keen to support the fitness ambitions of local youngsters. On confirming the opening weekend for Friday 3rd on the May bank holiday Nathan told us, “Dominique and I are thrilled to be opening the doors and letting everyone see what an amazing facility is on their doorstep. The design of the gym, the artwork on the walls, the amount of equipment in the gym and studio all look amazing, we’re really proud.” The fantastic new facility is purpose built with a unique concept to encourage young people aged between 5-16 to increase their physical activity, health and fitness levels in an exciting and stimulating environment. The concept, already a major success in other UK towns, is a first for the area and the facility. The interior, equipment, classes and atmosphere create a space that truly inspires young people, designed with them in mind. The centre offers state-of-the-art equipment which includes treadmills, fluid rowers, revolve bikes and a target wall to name a few. In addition, SHOKK will also offer free classes to all members such as SHOKK Race, Kombat, Street Dance and Circuit Classes. Designed exclusively with young people and hoping to inspire them to regularly visit to get fit, stay fit, meet new friends and have fun. As a special opening weekend promotion, membership will cost just £19.50 per month for the first 200 members that sign up! With a series of free taster sessions and classes, as well as access to all the equipment, kids and parents alike can have the opportunity to see just what SHOKK Youth Gym has to offer. Why not pop in over the bank holiday, and remember to bring your trainers so you can have a go!

Southbourne’s Got Energie! Fantastic new ladies gym opens

We met up with Kate from the new Energie Fitness for Women, located above Sainsbury’s in Southbourne. Kate told us what’s special about the new facility, “At Energie our aim is to find new and creative ways for our ladies to achieve their goals. We like to go the extra mile and exceed all expectations - after all, our members are the best part of our gym! Our friendly team of fitness professionals are on hand at all times to provide support and guidance wherever it is needed, and also to create a welcoming, playful environment in which members can feel connected.” Kate continued, “Being based in the beautiful Southbourne really means a lot to us. Surrounded by small local businesses, we want to support the community as much as possible. Our monthly social events will be held in order to help boost local businesses and show our belief in them. With the large majority of our members being very local, there is a real community feel to our gym which is a fantastic environment to be around.” Three Generations Get Fit Energie have just had three generations of the same family join! All living locally, they plan to regularly exercise together, helping with motivation and encouragement. Sayma (63) explains that she has been active and healthy all her life, and would really like to maintain this with our help. Sayma was previously a member of another female only gym, however, the distance from home really didn’t suit her, and she is very relieved that there is finally a gym in Southbourne! Jennifer (40) told us how she wants to lose some weight, and gain more energy, both of which she can achieve with the innovative 6 week Empower programme. Finally, Syma (18) is new to exercise and would really like to build up a respectable fitness level and get used to exercising regularly.

Sugar Mango Celebrates 5 Years with exclusive exhibition

Celebrating their 5th birthday this June, Sugar Mango will be holding a special exhibition of handmade corsets by local designer Vicky Francis. The exhibition will feature printed textiles by Zoe Jarvis during May and June, with a ‘meet the designers’ day on Saturday 8th June, there will also be some special Birthday treats on offer. “When I met Vicky and Zoe just a few weeks ago, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate 5 years in business than helping another designer show her collection, and as we all have a passion for design and the uniqueness of handmade items, it seemed a match made in heaven” says owner Alison. Vicky and Zoe studied textile design at Falmouth college of Arts, each cultivating their own unique style in embroidery and bead embellishment and digital printing. Developing a passion for corsetry and lingerie, Vicky has gone on to apply her style into creating an outstanding collection of limited edition one-off pieces incorporating Zoe’s digital printed textiles, which Zoe also makes into lampshades and other textiles for the home. “I am really excited to be showing my collection at Sugar Mango, we’re creating a boudoir theme in Alison’s showroom, and her jewellery perfectly complements my designs” says Vicky of Lace Couture. Sugar Mango now have a jewellery workshop onsite and a new addition to the team of a fully qualified Goldsmith, so can now offer a full repair service. However even more exciting is the bespoke jewellery service. “We work closely with our customers to make their perfect piece of jewellery, interpreting their ideas into something beautiful” says owner Alison. “It’s been an exciting addition to the business, we can re-design, repair, and restore all jewellery now.” So if you have any family heirlooms you would like modernising then take them to Sugar Mango where they can transform it into something more contemporary.

Busy Times at Southbourne Creative Hub Cathy’s Update from the Creative Hub

Cathy Jones, Director of The Hub brings us up to date on their Surprising Southbourne project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. We’ve had some amazing things donated for our exhibition which takes place in July so there’s plenty of time to bring us any photos or stories. We’ve even been given a piece of the Shell House, rescued during its demolition in 2001 and film of The Spartans swimming in the sea in mid-winter 1963. Some of the other recent events and activities are shown below. Our first heritage history stroll, led by historian John Cresswell was a huge success with 40 people taking part.

Learning to Learn!

with Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords

In our children’s efforts to learn, from memorising multiplication tables to evaluating the characters in “The Taming of The Shrew”, we sometimes forget that ultimately they need to learn how to learn. Every student is told to study. However, how often are they shown a way to study, to learn, and to take responsibility for their own learning? 1) Taking notes in class and while reading is essential to studying. But, the student must be able to focus on what is important. Exploring different approaches to note taking like mind maps, using highlighters, note cards, diagrams and pictures will help. Students must be shown what is important and this requires reviewing their notes with them so they improve. 2) We sometimes assume that students know how to study. You can help them study by setting aside time, quizzing them on information in their notes, helping them set up study groups, reviewing material as a game, helping them create mnemonics and test questions. 3) Learning versus memorising. Actors must recall pages and pages of scripts. A university-based psychologist, Helga Noice, has studied actors’ memorisation techniques for decades. Interestingly, they don’t memorise lines in a traditional way. She found that they read the script over and over, looking for a chain that links one event in a play to another and clues, which define characters, situations and relationships. And words are linked to body movements. Memorisation is organic rather than forced. This technique can be used to study and to promote deeper learning and understanding. 4) Quizzing students over and over elicits a “testing effect”. This increases retention of facts and information by about 50% over other study methods. This can be improved by quizzing a student immediately after she has learned something. 5) Listen to your child. How does he learn? What areas does she think require more work? What study process was successful in the past? What was unsuccessful? You may be surprised by how much your child knows about what does and does not work. This helps give your child control, fostering responsibility.

Commercial Property Team Bolstered at Humphries Kirk

Humphries Kirk are pleased to announce the arrival of a new member of staff at their Southbourne office. Louise Vermeulen is a Commercial Property expert and has experience in a wide range of matters. Louise advises on all manner of commercial property work from; option agreements, conditional contracts and plot sales, to dealing with freehold and leasehold commercial acquisitions. She also acts for landlords and tenants in letting commercial shops and units and has experience in small business sales, commercial refinancing and lease renewals. On the residential front she has been involved in dealing with lease extensions and variations through to the usual sales and purchases. We are very fortunate to have all that in Louise”. If you would like to speak to Louise or her secretary Sandie Banks then contact the Southbourne office on 01202 421 111 or email l.vermeulen@hklaw.eu 1 Southbourne Grove Bournemouth BH6 3RD
