Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area Sainsbury’s Secures Southbourne

The artists impression teased us with a trendy looking bar and restaurant, however 46-48 Southbourne Grove will be living out a slightly more everyday existance as a new Sainsbury’s. We spoke to a number of local residents and business owners who had mixed feelings towards another supermarket on the high street. “I will be happy to have an alternative to Tesco”, said local resident Hazel. However Neil commented, “It will cause even more traffic chaos and I’d have prefered the bar promised.” Business Association co-ordinator Heather Martyn said, “We are delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s to the Grove and look forward to more footfall in that section of the high street. I think it will be good for the area.” What do you think about Sainsbury’s in Southbourne? Add your comment and see what others are saying on our website: www.southbourne.net

Something for the Boys

at SugarMango

‘Mewellery’, ‘mangles’, ‘mancessories’… whether you choose to adopt the latest buzz words or not, men’s jewellery cannot be ignored. Masculinity and fashion have been constantly redefined – evidently, style is not just for women – and in recent years design has reached a point where men’s jewellery is in a league of its own, covering a whole spectrum from ‘bling’ statement pieces, to the sleek and subtle bracelets, necklaces and cufflinks for everyday wear. Leather is most definitely in, as is rope and cord, stainless steel and silver; dark, neutral colours; and a chunky minimalistic aesthetic, often drawing on military influence. SugarMango is launching a new collection from Unique Men and Fred Bennett brands which have a dynamic mix of new materials and textures and traditional designs. Alison, owner of SugarMango, told us, “I believe men will always gravitate towards quality, good design and originality, buying jewellery that reflects their own individuality and taste”. Men’s jewellery has made a steady comeback in recent decades – much influenced by the rise of celebrity culture in modern-day society. SugarMango’s collection for men is designed to complement every lifestyle and budget with items from as a little as £24.50. Visit SugarMango on Southbourne Grove to see the complete collection.

New Collection for Men This inspiring new range offers an extensive selection of diverse designs, with choices ranging from essential classics to casual leather and stainless steel.

Photo Competition Results A look at the entrants

In our May/June edition we ran a photography competition. We received a range of entries with diverse and interesting views of the local area. All the entrants were displayed in a gallery on the Southbourne website (www.southbourne.net) and the entry with the most votes from our readers was named the Readers Choice winner. The Readers Choice winner was Emma Readers Choice Winner MacWilliam’s evocative Emma MacWilliam seascape. Her image has been displayed as the cover image of the Southbourne Facebook group for the last month. The overall winner was judged by professional photographer Zelda from Studio Shotz (www.studioshotz.co.uk) and the Southbourne Competition Winner Magazine Editor Tom Stewart Britton Faull. Stewart Britton’s well timed shot frames our local coast with two Spitfires and a Lancaster in formation against a beautiful sky. The winning photo adorns the cover of this edition of the Southbourne Magazine.

Help Your Child Get a Head Start this coming school term

Your child may just need a confidence boost, help with some basic skills, or an extension to what they are learning at school. Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords can help them be their best and do their best at school. Edward and the staff at Bournemouth NumberWorks'nWords say their primary goal is to make a difference for children by increasing their confidence, developing skills on how to learn, and to make learning maths, English, and verbal reasoning fun. You will see your children’s confidence grow as they learn new skills and methods of learning. This all leads to success in school. These small accomplishments can add up over time and change a child's perspective to school and learning. The more ways in which we learn to solve problems, the more we learn. Bo and Maya love coming to Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords at the end of the school day or on Saturdays to start their extra tuition sessions, once or twice a week. Their mums say, “they love it; they get hands-on learning with individualised attention and we can see their improvement”. Edward notes several studies where high quality after-school programmes are linked to significant gains in standardised test scores. Most interesting is the finding that regular participation in after school programmes demonstrates improvements in work habits, overall behaviour and general academic achievements. Evaluators in one study found that academic outcomes linked to after school programmes included better attitudes toward school and higher education aspirations; better performance in school as measured by test scores and grades; higher school attendance; and less disciplinary action. The tutors at Bournemouth NumberWorks'nWords are always happy to assess children's levels of maths and English skills and discuss their needs without any obligation. Free assessments can be booked by calling the centre at 01202 433673 or emailing them at bournemouth@numberworks.com Bournemouth NumberWorks ’n Words is located in the Southbourne Crossroads area, near the beach, at 107/109 Belle Vue Road, BH6 3DJ
