Hello Florence and Teddy Welcoming a unique children’s store to Southbourne
We met up with Rebecca, owner of a new store dedicated to children, Florence and Teddy. Based on Seabourne Road and opened in October, Florence and Teddy is all about providing individual, quality products that are different from the mass market. From clothes aged from new born to 8 years old, toys, wall art, photography packages and special gift hampers, there is something for everyone, with a range of prices from affordable to limited edition items that are little bit more flashy. Rebecca told us a little more about Florence and Teddy, “If you want something special as a gift for a child, we are the place to visit first. With an online store as well, you don’t have to worry about missing out if you’re not local to Southbourne, Dorset, all our great products will be online too.” Florence and Teddy is a unique shopping experience. Alongside amazing brands as Toby Tiger, Frugi and London Kiddy, you will discover beautifully handmade products sourced from local talented artists and designers; such as Jada’s Pretty Things, an exclusively designed children’s clothing range for Florence and Teddy. “It isn’t just some of the organic, established brands we will be stocking; we are also looking for the talented local people of Southbourne and beyond to stock. We are not a craft shop, or sell shabby chic items, Florence and Teddy will be breath of fresh air on the high street where unique, British handmade and the exceptional is championed.”, added Rebecca. Florence and Teddy have their own popular range of wall art and birth art prints. Rebecca has created a unique store where you can walk in and see something never seen elsewhere before with a focus on excellent customer experience, from the choice of products, packaging and service. Visit the new store on Seabourne Road or their new website for the latest news, special offers and new products just in.

Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013
I am probably not the only one to feel a little down as this years amazing summer drew to a close. This year brought the warmest summer for years, AFC Bournemouth winning promotion to the almighty championship, Rolling Stones and Arctic Monkeys storming Glastonbury and a full range of brilliant sun kissed activities to the town of Bournemouth. However there is no reason to be down because for music the fun has only just started as we approach Christmas and New Year. Christmas is one of the best periods of the year for gigs and in Southbourne there are many developments that I am extremely excited about. A new evening has cropped up on a weekly basis that will help develop and prosper talent in the local area whilst also delivering fantastic entertainment for the audience. The night that I am highlighting is at the Grove Tavern every Monday evening. The music is primarily acoustic and the acts are handpicked by a local legend. The legend is Anthony Lewis who has been in many highly successful bands, probably the most successful being Dustycuts who earned a reputation as one of the South’s premier live acts. Now Anthony focuses his attention on many projects, but one of his key aims is helping young acts develop, especially by giving them Anthony Lewis many opportunities to perform through his pioneering Fairplay nights and he is always willing to offer advice to young up and coming musicians. This isn’t to say the acoustic night isn’t full of class acts in their own rights however as there are some amazing acts performing for free at the Grove. On 11 November there is a stellar line up of Ben Waugh, Emma Wright and Steven King. These artists will all be playing acoustic sets that will
11 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic
cover a range of genres and all three have been thrilling artists all over Bournemouth so it is a great opportunity to catch them on your doorstep. On the 18 November David Mckenzie will be bringing his shake up of acoustic folk, roots and blues to the Grove. I was lucky to have David play at my festival this summer and he is a brilliant man with a brilliant sense of humour. More importantly though his music does the talking, in my opinion he is one of the finest guitarists on the Bournemouth circuit. On the 26 David Mckenzie November Southbourne favourite Dan Gordan is playing and he will be supported by Xander Allen. Xander and his band The Keys have been growing a huge reputation and as a result sit healthily on top of the Reverbnation charts. Away from the Grove, Seabournes in Pokesdown and the Spyglass and Kettle are still offering live music every weekend and it is well worth catching an evening at both bars because they are brilliant places to get up and have a dance to good honest live music. Last word from me is that I will be playing at the Grove Tavern on 2 December. It’s a special show for me in my home venue and I will be pulling out all the stops to put on a real pre Christmas party so it would be great to see you there. Following that I wish you all a Merry Christmas and I’ll see you in 2014 with everything exciting musically in Southbourne. Seabournes 915 Christchurch Rd, Dorset BH7 01202 427762

Southbourne Creative Hub on the BBC and more news from the Creative Hub
Cathy was delighted to be interviewed for BBC South Today in October talking about a new community finance initiative being launched by Bournemouth Council. The clip also featured the popular Laughter Club, 6.30pm - 7.30pm on the last Wednesday of the month.
Jericho Art Group Further support from Bournemouth Council is in the form of a grant to continue our Jericho Art Group (by and for vulnerable adults with and recovering from mental ill health) as an outreach project at Vita Nova in Boscombe. The project will explore the question, ‘What does it mean to be well?’ The group is a collaboration with the Richmond Fellowship and new members are welcome to this year long project on Friday afternoons which includes creative writing and will culminate in a mosaic to go on public display. Members need to be referred by a key worker who can contact The Hub for an application form.

Meet Domestic Angels Helping people in their homes
Samantha Acton has been the owner of Domestic Angels for over a decade. The Angels provide cleaning and home help services to the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch areas. From weekly cleaning to spring-cleans, ironing to general housework, they’ll take the work off your hands and a load off your mind. Their home help service provides a friendly pair of hands for those requiring extra attention. Daily visits help with meals, cleaning and shopping, but above all they provide a trusted friendly face. Gaynor Tilley of Southbourne told us of her experience with Domestic Angels, "I hired a cleaner from Domestic Angels over 4 years ago and throughout that time Samantha has always provided great staff who do a thorough job. Since then the way Samantha also dealt with a delicate family situation in caring for an elderly family member highlighted the 'personable' side to this business. I know I can trust Domestic Angels and Samantha to do a great job every week." If you would like to talk about how Domestic Angels could help you in your home, call Samantha on 01202 267350.

That’s The Turkey Sorted and lots more from Neal’s & Son local family butchers in Tuckton
Neal's & Son Butchers has been serving Tuckton since 1999. Dan and his staff pride themselves on their standard of service and customer care supplying the best local and national free range meat. They offer a quality selection of English Free Range poultry, pork, lamb and Scotch beef. Dan told us, “We have the best free range turkeys sourced from farmers in Romsey and beef from Hampshire.” Dan always knows exactly where their meat comes from as it’s always sourced locally - which means it’s fresh, tasty and supports the local economy. Beef is hung on the bone for a minimum of 21 days, as this creates the best taste and tenderness you can get. Chickens are sourced from a little family farm in Devon called Creedy Carver, these are free range, fed on a GM free diet to allow slower growth, great maturing and better flavour. Neal's and Son also hand make their our sausages and burgers, which range from wild bore, cider, pork, Ringwood ale and hot and spicy, the list is huge with over 30 different flavours! Quality meat is only half the story, it’s also about their knowledge and skills. Dan explained, “We take a friendly and knowledgeable approach to our meat and if you have a recipe, bring it in and show us. We can advise you on what cuts of meat to use with your meal.” In store, you’ll find a great selection and display on the counter, and if you need your meat boning, rolling or marinating, they’d be happy to do that too. Dan and his friendly staff are proud to offer these services with expert knowledge and care. Based just 100 yards from Tuckton Bridge, Neal’s also offer a local home delivery service with a minimum order of just £20. At Neal's & Son, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the service and produce that Dan and his team offer. Be sure to pop in and prepare the oven for your Christmas dinner! Also, don’t miss them at the Christmas Market featured on page 22 for more information and a taster session!

How to Support Your Child’s Maths Learning First – identify the problem
“Every child can pass maths.”
-- Mark McCourt, outspoken maths educator Knowing how to solve equations, interpret graphs and charts or find an unknown side or angle in a triangle has practical implications in Edward & Connie areas as diverse as psychology to construction apprenticeships. There is no reason why students preparing to take GCSE maths should not meet these challenges. However, last year 38 percent of students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland did not gain a minimum C grade in GCSE maths or as McCourt notes – “after 1,600 hours of instruction.” Why teaching is important to support learning There are over 40,000 educational apps available for PCs and tablets. A lot of the maths apps are drills. Though drills, especially for multiplication tables, are important, they can be mind-numbingly boring. Our minds work best when we interact with other people. One type of relationship that works exceptionally well for deeper learning and education is the “master/mentor-apprentice relationship”. Students often feel intimidated by the complexity and difficulty of learning a concept in maths. The mentor-tutor can break down the intricacy of the learning task. The best way to retain knowledge is for students to move ahead a little, come back a little to review old material, and then move forward a bit with achievable challenges. This is how tutoring should work: • Making adjustments as a student learns is paramount to his or her education. It is best accomplished by a mentor who has not just developed subject skill, but is a master educator • The tutor-mentor can keep long-term goals in mind while not allowing a student’s confidence to collapse • Real-time feedback is important in building confidence. In this relationship, the student can ask questions and request changes without fear • Extra-tuition is an investment in your child’s future
