I am delighted to welcome in the new year and a new edition of the Southbourne-on-Sea Magazine. Although there is a tough economic forecast for 2013, Southbourne is bucking the national trend and looking healthier than ever. With empty shop units being snapped up all the time, Sainsbury’s sorting out the biggest eyesore in the area and a vibrant local community spirit, Southbourne is definitely the place to be this year. I hope you enjoy this edition, please support the advertisers in the magazine, without them we couldn’t produce it!

Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area

Sainsbury's - Your Comments The new Sainsbury's store in Southbourne opened just as we went to print. The refurbished building is striking with coloured panels, large floor to ceiling windows and there are new parking spaces at the rear. Being the largest new store to open in many years, Sainsbury's was always going to please some and upset others. Readers submitted the following comments on the www.southbourne.net website and our Southbourne Facebook group. “Another nail in the coffin for the local traders”, said Stuart, a sentiment echoed by John, “We don't need another supermarket in Southbourne”. The styling is a hit with some, “Cracking effort on the style. It could sit on the over-cliff comfortably and become million pound flats”, said Darren. Others are just glad to see it in use, “Problem is it is a large space for an 'independent' to fill. I personally would prefer to see someone in it rather than it looking derelict.” commented Ann. Chair of the local business group Heather Martyn said, “Southbourne is a vibrant mix of multi-nationals and independent traders, which means there is something for everyone. This was a dead section of the high street, it is now bringing footfall and therefore independent traders nearby now have every reason to stay.” Have your say, add your comment at www.southbourne.net

Dorset Police & Crime Commissioner - Your Questions Answered Martyn Underhill stood as an independent candidate in the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections in November. He is a former police chief and his background in the police, not politics, proved a success with Dorset voters. We are interviewing Martyn for an edition later in the year and you are invited to submit your questions for us to put to Martyn. Email yours to info@southbourne.net including your name and location.

Creative centre in Southbourne Florist

Walking into Southbourne Florist is a feast for the senses, scents from fresh flowers, vibrancy and richness of colour splashed jewel like thoughout, from the flowers, amazing paintings, and luscious yarn. Tracey has been in Southbourne Florist, for 7 years. A qualified florist with many years of experience, she creates beautiful floral tributes and displays for wedding, funerals, births, birthdays, anniversaries and more. The flowers she uses for her creations are freshly delivered direct from the growers in Holland, Colombia and other exoctic places. Her team of drivers will deliver direct locally, and you can place orders by phone, in the shop, or through Interflora. Southbourne Florist is a large shop, and Tracey decided to offer space to other creative people. In the autumn of 2012, the artist Moira Downey moved into a studio space and Steffi Colbert brought in CloseKnit Wool shop. The name CloseKnit seemed to fit the small space, and reflected the sense of community both within the shop itself, and with those who come together to knit. Steffi has been knitting all her life, and in the 1980s had a stall on Camden Lock Market in London, for which she designed and created her own knitwear range. Steffi and her knitters support local community and charity projects, the latest being the Knitted Boob Project, and in the shop Steffi offers tuition and project support. CloseKnit stocks interesting patterns, needles, knitted gifts and of course stocks a wide range of Yarn, including Debbie Bliss and coming soon, Rowan.

Maths Without Tears

with Connie and Edward from NumberWorks’nWords

Now that children are well into the school year, parents are beginning to receive reports about school performance. The most feared subject for many students is maths, generating, pain, panic and anxiety for students in primary through secondary education. There are several education research articles from around the world documenting this fear and anxiety. What can parents do at home to help their children learn maths? • Encourage your children to play maths games and puzzles. • Find ways to use maths in everyday activities. Have your children figure out the expected amount of change you should receive after buying several items and paying with a note of a larger amount. This encourages mental maths. • Try not to tell your children that you were or are bad at maths. A study by Eccles and Jacobs published decades ago revealed that daughters’ achievement in maths went down when their mothers told them how bad they were at maths. • Reassure your children that developing expertise takes time and practise. One thing we encourage our students to do when confronted with a problem is to take each one in manageable units, break it down so that the overall problem does not look daunting and brings on panic.

New Year Dental Offers from Shelley Manor Dental

Shelley Manor Dental is small, family-run private dental practice offering preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry services to patients of all ages and to families. The dental practice opened two years ago in the new medical centre, Shelley Manor, and is celebrating with some fantastic New Year offers. Free check-ups for children As a family friendly practice children (under 18) of registered patients are offered FREE check-ups all year round. In the New Year there is a 50% off Fissure Sealants promotion running for kids. Dr Tim Doyle recommends fissure sealants for kids, a “quick, safe and painless way to protect children's teeth from decay”. A fissure sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant forms a hard shield that prevents food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay. News on Tooth Whitening New legislation came into effect on 31st October 2012, stating that only registered dentists and their suitably trained teams can undertake tooth whitening. As a result Shelley Manor Dental has a special price on tooth whitening of £250, if you book in by 31st March 2013. Evening appointments – Free Parking For those of you who find it difficult to get away during the day to visit the dentist, evening appointments with both the dentist and hygienist are available.

Telling Our Story: Southbourne Creative Hu The Southbourne Creative Hub is one of the first groups in the UK to receive a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) All Our Stories grant. This exciting project, “Surprising Southbourne”, led by The Hub, has been given the grant to tell the story of Southbourne “from S O U T H B O U R N E smugglers haunt to seaside C R E A T I V E H U B community”. All Our Stories, a brand new small grant programme, launched in 2012 in support of BBC Two’s The Great British Story, has been designed as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in their heritage. With HLF funding and support, community groups will carry out activities that help people explore, share and celebrate their local heritage. The popular series presented by historian Michael Wood and supported by a programme of BBC Learning activities and events got thousands of us asking questions about our history and inspired us to look at our history in a different way through the eyes of ordinary people. The programme and HLF All Our Stories has proved a real hit and now Surprising Southbourne is one of hundreds of successfull projects around the UK to receive a grant. The Southbourne Creative Hub will be working with younger and older residents to explore the development of Southbourne from wild heath land used by smugglers, through its development in Victorian and Edwardian times as a tourist resort, to its part in World War II and

ub Celebrates £6000 Heritage Lottery Grant 21 later, the now gone but previously much loved Shell House. The information uncovered will be used to mount an exhibition, to capture peoples stories digitally and to inspire some creative work such as songs, poems, short stories and art work. TV presenter and historian Michael Wood, said, “We British love our history, and no wonder; few nations in the world, if any, have such riches on their doorstep, and so much of it accessible to all of us. It is really tremendous that the people of Southbourne have been inspired to get involved to tell their own story and to dig deeper into their own past. It’s brilliant that so many people are begin given the chance to get involved through the All Our Stories grants. Having travelled the length and breadth of the British Isles this last year filming The Great British Story, I am certain that fascinating and moving stories will be uncovered which will not only bring to life the excitement of local history, but will illuminate and enrich every community’s connection with the national narrative.” Commenting on the award, Cathy Jones, Director of the Southbourne Creative Hub said, “We are thrilled with this grant award because we know there is such a lot of exciting history to learn about in Southbourne, and more to be uncovered. This is an amazing place to live and we can’t wait to get started and to share our discoveries with everyone.” Richard Bellamy, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South West, said, “Clearly the success of All Our Stories has reinforced the fact that we are indeed a nation of story tellers and that we want to explore and dig deeper into our past anddiscover more about what really matters to us. This is exactly what then grant will do for the Surprising Southbourne project as they embark on a real journey of discovery.”

By combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnosis, Adam offers a range of treatments, including Gastric Band, Phobias, Weight Management, Smoking Cessation and Stress Management to name but a few. If you would like more information or to arrange a free phone consultation please call 07596 332320 or visit: www.spotlessmind.co.uk The Gentle Giant Gary from the centre also wants to share his findings on Bowen, “I first came across Bowen through a colleague and after feeling how this gem of a therapy worked and provided a sense of wonder again about the mysteries of life and how we are well designed and well equipped to maintain our bodies. However, over the years we have been manipulated into seeking or searching for the gold paved streets of london instead of the preciousness of our individual beings who are collectively linked to the source and evolving as is the universe. I specialise in Bowen because I have experienced it's magic and seen results which were sometimes expected but at others still able to surprise. And recently I saw immediate results in treating a three month old baby with colic. Awaken your body to Bowen now. Don't suffer with pain.
