5 More Sand, More Beach! The final stage of the Beach Replenishment Scheme is due to finish this Autumn at Fisherman’s Walk. The project started in 2006 when over 1 million cubic metres of sand was dredged from Poole Harbour and pumped onto local beaches. A further 900,000 cubic metres has also been brought from the Isle of Wight. A mix of water, sand and shingle is deposited on the existing beach and the water drains away leaving a new larger beach. Initially, the new sand is darker but lightens with exposure to daylight and oxygen. While the sand is being pumped, people are asked to keep out of the closed sections of beach and away from all machinery. For a few days after the completion there is a small risk of quick sand as the water drains away. The work is being paid for by a grant from the Environment Agency on behalf of DEFRA.

Heather Martyn

Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association co-ordinator

We had a chat with local business owner Heather Martyn about the recently re-formed traders and business group, the Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA). Heather has been running Sugar Mango (37 Southbourne Grove) for the past 2 years and has lived in the area for many years. We started by asking her why the group was set up and what is its purpose. “Southbourne-on-Sea traders, working with Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, are determined to bring energy and vitality to the area”, explains Heather. The new ‘Southbourne-on-Sea’ name was launched earlier in the summer at an event attended by the Mayor of Bournemouth. Since then the group has been working hard on a new website and producing a fold out map detailing local shops and businesses. When asked about the “on-Sea” addition to Southbourne, Heather said, “The new name is designed to rebrand Southbourne. It‘s what it used to be called, it’s quintessentially English and encompasses some of the heritage associated with the area.” Readers with a longer memory may remember the area used to be known as Stourfield.

We asked what support and feedback SoSBA has had from local businesses since the launch. “We have had a positive reaction from local traders with a good number signing up. Membership is IN! W A meal combined with the Bournemouth for 2 Chamber of Trade and Commerce relaxed shoppingchoice independent and is a great way for local e-on-sea.co.uk www.southbourn businesses to come together for the benefit of the area. I hope that the Ou N! success of our new website and map will encourage as many other business to join and be part of the group.” We asked Heather to sum up Southbourne-on-Sea for someone who had never visited before and was thinking of visiting, “Southbourne-on-Sea has a great range of individual shops you won’t find anywhere else in Bournemouth, there is a great community feel and we’re just a few minutes walk from the beach”. Heather then told us about the aims of SoSBA moving forward, “We plan to continue promoting the excellent range of shops and services Southbourne-on-Sea has to offer and encouraging local residents to support their high street. We will continue growing the website and supporting local initiatives such as the Southbourne-on-Sea Magazine.” Find out more online Visit www.southbourne-on-sea.co.uk for the latest from the Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association.

Café Number 4 A family affair

Café Number 4, located in the heart of Southbourne’s friendly shopping area, is a family run bistro bar and café with a secluded garden. We talked to proprietor Jenny Newman about what makes Café Number 4 so special. “Our customers tell us it is our fabulous food and friendly atmosphere that keeps them coming back. We really believe in good food, and all our meals, cakes, scones, even the flavoured oils we use, are made on the premises. And of course, everything is cooked to order. We source our produce from local free-range and organic suppliers wherever possible, and ingredients that have to come from further afield are mostly fair trade. But we still believe in keeping our prices affordable. A delicious three course meal at one of our music nights won’t cost an arm and a leg.” We asked about music at Café Number 4, “We have young mums and kids who love our garden, local office workers who come for lunch and adults of all ages come for the great music nights. We specialise in jazz, latin, blues, acoustic vocals, the sort of music that gives dining out that added extra. I’m a musician myself so I know how important it is to book high quality local acts. We also cater for private parties and functions. We’ve had some great events here, birthday celebrations for people aged from 18 to 80, christenings, anniversaries and we’ve even had a wedding reception. People seem to like our unique atmosphere and the personal touch we provide. And groups looking for a venue to meet on week day evenings can book the cafe space. We’ve had a diet club, a healing group, you name it. We love being a part of the local community.” Café Number 4 Tel: 01202 424687 4 Southbourne Grove, BH6 3QZ

Sweet Success at Sugar Mango

We spoke to Heather and Alison from Sugar Mango to find out more about the popular local store just celebrating its second anniversary and the designer jewellery sold. “We love jewellery! Designing it, selecting it, wearing it....we just love it! So we thought it might just be a great idea to sell it to! So here we are, Alison and Heather, doing what we love”, explains Alison. “After loving every minute of my trips to India, and finding some beautiful jewellery there, I was really inspired to change my job and lifestyle to enable me to express my creative side. So after meeting Heather and realising we both shared a vision for a creative business, we decided to make it happen.” When asked about the store, “We created Sugar Mango, our boutique in Southbourne-on-Sea, to showcase our gorgeous collection of unique jewellery and accessories. The shop offers a peaceful and inspiring background for our customers to enjoy whilst browsing and trying on new styles. Our aim is to bring special and unique products to enhance your lifestyle and inspire you.” We asked more about the Indian connection, “All the jewellery is handmade in India, I select each stone ensuring a premium quality, and blending them together into beautiful colour combinations of unique one off pieces. Inspiration for the unique jewellery creations comes from the deep herbaceous borders and tranquil waters of the quintessential English country garden. We are dedicated to bringing you handcrafted jewellery from India and accessories from all over the world, for a truly unique blend of ethnic and contemporary style, all at affordable prices. We believe in trading fairly; ethically sourcing our materials and products. Alison visits all the workshops producing our jewellery and gifts in India, building a strong relationship with our suppliers ensuring fair working conditions.”

Wild Flour Bakery it’s all about good food, naturally... We spoke to Davina, the owner and head baker at Wild Flour Bakery. We started by asking her to explain the concept of Wild Flour. “Wild Flour baking workshops are all about hands on, food fun and providing children with experiences of fresh, seasonal food”, says Davina. “We organise a number of hands on baking workshops where we explore food and learn where it comes from, how it’s made and the practical elements of baking and cooking. The baking workshops are aimed at 7-11 year olds and involve taking ingredients from the ‘urban garden’ before using them in the kitchen to make a tasty treat to take home”. “We also have a number of other fun activities to offer”, explains Davina, “we are encouraging children to grow their own vegetable planter and get their hands dirty at home. Whether they have a garden, balcony, or a window ledge they will be able to experience growing their own food and cooking with it too. We can also host children's birthdays parties for up to 8 children to produce an exciting and creative program to get everyone involved in the process of baking and preparing the food”. Whilst sampling some of Davina’s delicious flapjacks she explained the corporate side to Wild Flour Bakery, “We also provide bespoke event catering and cupcakes for any occasion, which can incorporate the colours or logos for your company or theme! Make an impression, brighten up your event, or surprise a loved one with custom cupcakes”. For more information about baking workshops or bespoke event catering contact Davina at davina@wildflour.co.uk or visit www.wildflour.co.uk
