New Musical Debuts in Bournemouth Could YOU be Patrick Brady?
¡No Pasarán! is an exciting new musical, with an original story, debuting this October in Bournemouth. We met up with Roy Gaynor, the minstrel behind the story, music and lyrics of ¡No Pasarán! Roy started by briefly explaining the main story, “Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 - 1939, it’s a story of love, friendship and selflessness and the heroism of the Spanish people on both sides and of the volunteers of the International Brigades who went to Spain to fight fascism.” After an initial idea 20 years ago, Roy has focused on the project in the last 4 years and has worked with award winning Royal College of Music graduate Doug Gould on orchestration. There are almost 40 original songs in the show which unveils the compelling story over two and a half hours. The spectacle makes use of top of the range Barco digital cinema projectors for still and video scenery projections to help the audience see, hear and feel the story unfold. Roy explained the idea of the local premier is to invite investors and build interest with an eye on a West End production. Rehearsals are underway but a leading man is needed to head up a great cast so are you Patrick Brady? If you are a tenor (if you are unsure about what voice you have but can sing those key songs from Les Mis really well) then you could be Patrick! Contact Roy via email on nopasaranmusical@gmail.com to arrange an audition. The October 2013 production of ¡No Pasarán! is a world premier and is directed by Margaret Coltman, a veteran of almost 100 productions in London and No Pasarán means ‘They around the UK. Shall not Pass’ and
was a defiant slogan used during the civil war by the people of Madrid as they defended the city against Franco's military uprising.
Tickets are on sale now for the premier being held at the De La Salle Theatre in Southbourne. All profits from this run are going to The Brain Tumour Charity.

Introducing Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our new local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Who better to bring us all the latest news, upcoming gig and artist info from the local area! Aaron’s released his first album this year entitled ‘The Last Dance To The Carousel’. Aaron is next playing at the Buffalo Bar, 23 Woodend Road in Winton, on July 11th or you can simply follow him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic
“Everybody wants to be entertained” were the words that came from the famous lips of Mick Jagger in 1971 and entertained you shall be! Did you know, in our local area there are thriving pubs, clubs and music venues where you could catch the very next Jagger or Lennon? My name is Aaron Gregory and I will be bringing you smack up to date with the unmissable shows and acts that are coming to the Southbourne area every month. For the past few years Southbourne has been on the up with its development of live music and there has never been a better time to go out for a night of local live music. Why not pop to the ever popular Spyglass and Kettle where there is live music from 9pm every Friday and Saturday night. These nights have become very popular and you will be up and dancing in no time.
11
The Grove Tavern also provides Charlie Hole fantastic entertainment every Friday/Saturday and Sunday night. It’s free entry and the ever-popular live events have recently seen some amazing performances by Krista Green and Charlie Hole. July’s highlights are the rock outfit The Reptiles on the 26th July who are excitedly making their long awaited return to the Grove.

Krista Green
One of Dorset's hottest rock & pop covers band, Icandi, can be heard on the 12th July at the Grove Tavern and if you enjoy their gig you can also see them a week later at the Spyglass and Kettle on the 19th July.
Finally if you’re a musician yourself, get down to the Grove on the 15th July for the chance to showcase your skills at their monthly Open Mic. You never know, maybe you’re the next Jagger! Spyglass and Kettle 25-27 Stourwood Ave, BH6 3PW 01202 424888

Southbourne - Have Your Say! Find out what people think about local issues
In a new regular section we will be asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our first poll we asked:
“What new shop, service or amenity would you like to see in Southbourne?” “Ladies fashion...shoes...bags! Surf shop, sports/swimwear/gym wearshop.” Kate C. “It'd be great to get some live music or comedy in SoBo. Also need a good book shop, new and second hand, with a coffee machine, or a cafe next door.” Barry A. “Clothes and shoes please!” Sue Q. “Southbourne needs some more visitor attractions around the seafront to draw people into their shops like, for example, a nature/history centre with nature trail and tea room or a sunken garden or maze.” Mo W. The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.
13
“Definitely a bookshop. There used to be one a few years ago, but these days Southbourne seems to cater more for the stomach than the brain!” Justin A. “Relaunch the Malt and Hops as a music venue! It was amazing when it was the Pinecliff and live music is so popular these days. My age group (50+) and others around it are often out on the gig circuit.” Lesley S. “How about a paint shop so everyone can buy a tin and brighten the Southbourne High Street up, so dull.” Steve S. “The high street is missing male fashion, a phone shop and a WH Smiths would be good.” Graham T. “Southbourne already has a good range of shops and not many empty units but could do with another car park.” Lucy P. Question for the Next Edition “If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?” Submit your answers by email to info@southbourne.net

Things To Do This Summer A small selection of things on offer locally
Ride the Fisherman’s Walk Lift
Picnic In the Park
Fisherman’s Walk Railway was added after the West and East Life in 1935 in the eastern suburb of Southbourne. Travelling up and down the cliff, it provides wonderful views along the coast and are great fun to ride, particularly if you’re heading back up the steep cliff after a long day on the beach. Open every day between Easter and the end of October, it also has a Cliff Top Cafe and Children’s play area at the bottom.
Seafield Gardens, covering 2.4 hectars, provides important recreation and sports facilities including Seafield Bowls Club, 3 Tennis Courts and a children’s play area. The centrepiece of the park is the Spectacular Grade II listed, privately-owned red brick water tower, just a few minutes walk for the seafront. Enjoy a picnic lunch, walk the dog and enjoy the surroundings.
Bournemouth Air Festival 2013 Now in its 6th year, the Air Festival has been an incredible success, welcoming more than 4.5 million people to the UK’s leading resort since 2008. Taking place from August 29 to September 1st Bournemouth will be transformed into a spectacular, award-winning aviation-inspired destination. Truly a festival in every sense of the word, this is the largest seafront show of its kind in Europe. www.bournemouthair.co.uk
Enjoy Fantastic Cliff Top Views Throughout the summer Southbourne’s Overcliffe Drive offers some of the best views of the bay with plenty of grassy spots on the cliff top and along the beach. Southbourne’s coastline gives a great opportunity to sunbathe on the sands and is wonderful for summer walks. It is also a great place to view the Bournemouth Air Festival away from the large crowds in Bournemouth.

Southbourne Creative Hub Update Cathy’s news from the Creative Hub
The Hub has had a very exciting year so far with more to come. For our Heritage Lottery Fund project we have been running textile and creative writing classes, going on history strolls and creating a new show Belle's View which took place at Immanuel Church at the end of June - all exploring the history of ‘Surprising Southbourne’. The project will culminate in an exhibition of everything we have discovered and the art works inspired by this in September. In addition our work at The Hub has been recognised with a Highly Commended award by Arts and Health South West. We are looking forward to a quieter time over the summer holiday period with lots of new activities starting in the autumn. If you are passing, you will see art work starting to go up outside created by our Jericho Art Group for vulnerable adults and soon, a new sign following our event to name The Hub building as Tony Harrington House. As Tony, a great supporter, always used to say about The Hub, "you ain't seen nothing yet."

Summer Holidays The time children forget everything they’ve learned at school...
...or maybe not—there are lots of fun ways to keep children engaged, curious and thinking during the summer. Students who read during the summer do better in school in the autumn and reading just 5 books over the summer can prevent academic loss. Let children choose Edward & Connie their own books, even if you think the books are not challenging enough; they need to have some choice and like what they read. You can also suggest more challenging books to move on to or read together. Ways to encourage reading 1. Create a system of rewards (movie, out-door activity, money towards a coveted game or special activity) for reading. 2. Join the Bournemouth Library’s summer reading programme. 3. Create a family reading hour. 4. Make a graph of reading time and books read with daily entries. You may be surprised how this encourages reading by watching it grow. 5. You could take turns reading aloud but even if children prefer to have you read to them, they are still learning to listen and comprehend—you can talk about what is happening in the story to see if they understand. Reading aloud also enriches their vocabulary—they are hearing words they might not be able to read yet but learning about them in the context of a story. Your local library and bookseller are great resources for book suggestions. They can recommend books for your child who is interested in cars, fairies, dinosaurs and more. For more book ideas, contact us at bournemouth@numberworks.com It is never too late to help struggling readers – 19 studies show that accelerating reading growth in later years may be more challenging than in the earlier years, but that it isn't too late to help struggling readers. Visit our Facebook page during the summer for other suggestions to make learning fun. And remember, time to play and re-charge is important too! Visit: www.facebook.com/NumberWorksnWordsBournemouth

New Saturday Opening at Shelley Manor Dental
New! Open on Saturdays You can now have your dental treatment on a Saturday morning at Shelley Manor Dental. The practice is introducing this additional clinic due to demand from busy ‘working’ patients seeking appointments outside the usual 9am-5pm hours. They are also open late on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for both dental and hygienist treatments. Readers Offer - £30 OFF Shelley Manor Dental is currently registering new patients and readers of this magazine are invited to make use of the £30 OFF discount for new patient consultations. This is a 45 minute consultation including x-rays that is normally charged at £80. Book an appointment on 01202 443882 and mention the ‘Southbourne Magazine’. Dental Hygiene Services Do you need to see a dental hygienist? You can now book in directly with the hygienist at Shelley Manor without needing to see the dentist. This follows a recent ruling by the General Dental Council that came into effect on 1st May 2013 allowing hygienists to perform treatments on patients without needing referral by a dentist. We offer 30 minute hygienist appointments so our hygienist has plenty of time to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, and can discuss your individual needs in detail. Call 01202 443882. Meet Dr Tim Doyle Tim graduated in 2001 from the Royal London Hospital and has practiced in dental practices in New Milton and Ringwood where he covered a wide variety of dental disciplines before opening his practice in Shelley Manor in 2010. Tim grew up in the New Forest and went to school in Bournemouth, where he now lives with his family.
