Close Knit Coffee Morning Fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support

Join Close Knit, a brand new Cafe situated in Southbourne Grove, as they take part in National Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Family run and owned by partners Steffi and Richard, Close Knit is a fantastic new cafe with a twist, offering a regular ‘Knit N’ Natter’ group on Thursday mornings. Many of the local community come together to enjoy knitting and a good chit chat. We spoke to owner Steffi who told us more, “We’re really excited to be hosting this Coffee Morning Fundraiser. The charity is very close our hearts and we’re planning to help raise as much money as possible!” Pop by between 9.30am and noon and enjoy a slice of cake and coffee. The proceeds from all hot drinks will go straight to Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity providing practical, medical and financial support who push for better cancer care. As well as ‘Knit N’ Natter’, Close Knit has fantastic ‘sunnyside’ seating outdoors, perfect to enjoy their local Purbeck Ice Cream and Milkshakes. They’ve also got a great selection of fresh homemade cakes and fair trade coffee, whilst offering free wi-fi for customers to enjoy. With a passion for knitting, they have an array of handmade wool, tea cosies and cushions for sale which are also really popular. Enjoy reading from their selection of books, or just watch the hustle and bustle of Southbourne from their cosy chairs. Steffi also told us “We’re baby feeding friendly and dogs are welcome. Keep an eye out for Knitting Classes and evening ‘Knit N’ Natter’ groups too.” Make sure you support Close Knit and Macmillian on Friday 27th September.

Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Can you believe it! The last time I wrote this column we were fast approaching one of the best summers on record, filled with BBQs, festivals and the return of the Rolling Stones. However by the time you will be reading this, summer will be over and Autumn will be closing in. Fear not however as there are many amazing events coming up in Bournemouth and the Southbourne area over the coming months to help you forget the Autumn Blues. One of the most eagerly anticipated of these events is the Boscombe Community Fair from the 13-15th September held at Kings Park. This event is just a twenty-minute walk from the heart of Southbourne and boasts an array of stalls from local companies including music workshops, food and drink from Boscanova café and of course two stages of the best live music in the town. Playing this year are Mischa and his merry men, The Jack Ratts, myself, Chris Woodford, Freefall Collective, festival favourites the Mother Ukers and Bournemouth unplugged winner Andy Stock. This is an amazing event and great value for money. If you want the festival vibe to continue into the Autumn then this is the event for you. If you are thinking of getting into music and learning to play, why not try one of the workshops at Music Art and Dance (MAD) in Southbourne. This fantastic little shop sells an array of interesting instruments and offers fun and social evenings where you can learn to play the African drums or guitar. If you want to find out more pop in to the store or visit www.facebook.com/madundergroundbournemouth

11 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic

The Grove Tavern in Southbourne has some exciting live music events coming up in the next couple of months. My personal favourite is Krista Green who won Bournemouth Unplugged in Krista Green 2011 and has a beautiful voice that can transport you to tranquillity. She is performing on September the 15th. On the 29th of September, something of a local legend, Alex Beds is performing. Alex is lead singer with Fearne, together they have supported Feeder and Athlete. Be sure to make it down to the gig because he won’t be playing venues this small for long. At the O2 Academy on the 21st October Babyshambles and Pete Doherty are returning with their new album. Peter is one of the most charismatic front men in the world and definitely worth seeing in your local venue and by the sounds of the recent single releases, the album is going to be a corker. Also don’t miss Beth Babyshambles Johnstone at Urban Reef on 30th October, blending beautiful melodies in the mould of Laura Marling and PJ Harvey, a fantastic prospect from the Bournemouth scene. There is so much happening this month to keep your musical palettes whetted; I’m excited just thinking about it! Urban Reef Undercliff Drive, BH5 1BN 01202 443960

Aaron’s Top Five And finally, five more unmissable shows coming up across the area: 9 September: Joel Gregory @ Cellar Bar, Boscombe 10 October: Spector @ Sixty Million Postcards Bournemouth 19 October: Oxjam Festival, Multiple venues, Bournemouth 21 October: Babyshambles @ the O2 Academy, Boscombe 30 October: Beth Johnstone @ Urban Reef, Boscombe

Southbourne - Have Your Say! Find out what people think about local issues

In a new regular section we will be asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our second poll we asked:

“If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?” “I would create more parking spaces across the area, especially the centre.” Joel “New Pedestrian crossing at Grove end of Fishermans Walk. Redesign parallel parking/pavement space on the Grove on the North side with 'angle parking' which would increase parking capacity by 50%. Promote more independent shops: ladies/mens/kids clothing, beach/surf shop, cycle shop? Promote the establishment of another decent restaurant. Enable community groups to use empty shop space/establish a community centre.” Graham F. “I’ve enjoyed the festivals put on in Southbourne this year, more of them please. Love seeing outside spaces getting used for community events.” Jean The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.

13

“I would close Southbourne Grove maybe one day a month and have a vintage/food/French type market!” Kate C. “I would take out a few of the chain supermarkets and replace them with local businesses, I would also open a male gym as the only gym we have caters for woman and children. Love the vintage/food/markets idea.” Niall M. “They should police the owners of dogs along Fisherman’s Walk and the cliff tops. Disgusting” Steve S. “I’d make the cliff lifts cheaper, they’re a bit much for such a short journey. More regular than Yellow Buses though :)” Lisa Have Your Say - Next Edition The council recently spent £76,000 on a basic sign that appears on a bridge over the A338 as you enter Bournemouth. For our next edition we’re asking: “Do you like the new sign?” and “What would you spend £76,000 on locally?” Submit your answers by email to info@southbourne.net

Southbourne Creative Hub Update Cathy’s news from the Creative Hub

Earlier this year we gained ‘Highly Commended’ in the Arts & Health South West Awards, recognising our work with those who need support to participate in creative activities. This work is now being extended and includes our support of an exciting initiative, ‘Making Southbourne Dementia-Friendly’. Debbie Horlock, Dementia Action Alliance Co-ordinator, explains, “Southbourne will be at the forefront of a national programme to become a dementia-friendly community, with a high level of public awareness and understanding so that people with dementia and their carers are supported by their community, improving their ability to remain independent and have choice and control over their lives. Many people you come across may have dementia and you won’t know it so everyone in the community can help.” Talking to people with dementia On Tuesday 10th September, from 2 - 4pm, those living with dementia and their carers are invited to The Southbourne Creative Hub for tea and cake to tell us about the difficulties you encounter and what would make it easier to live, work or visit Southbourne. Creating Community Support A Local Dementia Action Alliance (LDAA) is being formed. Members can include local businesses, community groups, faith groups, schools and colleges, residential homes, charities and health and social care providers. Successful actions have included: • a ‘no hurry’ supermarket checkout lane • schools including dementia in the curriculum • raising dementia awareness in customer-facing staff A core group of partners for the LDAA has been established but new members are sought. Contact Debbie Horlock on 07730 287201 or email debbie.horlock@alzheimers.org.uk for more detsails. Dementia Helpline: 0300 222 11 22 www.alzheimers.org.uk

Computers Are they the best tool for learning?

It’s true that children enjoy computer games and it seems like an easy and fun way to help them with maths and English. However, studies and our experience show that personal interaction is one of the most important elements in helping children learn. According to a study relating to computer use with over 1,000 children:

Edward & Connie

“You need to have other support structures in place to enable technology to be an effective learning tool outside of the classroom.” Computers, though helpful in education, will not meet all your child’s learning needs. Multiple factors are important for student achievement: • Parental and teacher support • Tutors who can motivate and challenge • Supplemental materials Technology is just a tool; the key is how it is used to support learning. Perhaps the most important quality is having a responsive tutor who is adaptable. Adaptability is the key when it comes to taking advantage of teachable moments or those fleeting times when a student locks on to something or expresses confusion. Adaptability is also the key when it comes to altering a lesson to meet the immediate needs of a student. NumberWorks’nWords utilizes tuition and computer technology tailored to each student’s individual needs. Call Connie or Edward on 01202 433673 to book a free assessment today. Oh Crumbs! A unique recipe for helping people in the local community

CRUMBS is a unique charity in Southbourne offering specialist training to adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues. Their fantastic bakery is situated at 59a Southbourne Road. CRUMBS trainees benefit from up to two years of person centred training in catering, cooking, baking, customer service and pre-employment skills. The bakery are a team of three, plus three volunteers, who were once trainees themselves. They are now helping ten new trainees build their confidence and gain new skills. Training in a real workplace environment ensures trainees gain valuable hands-on experience, improving confidence and communication skills, and supporting vulnerable adults to live more independent lives. Trainees are then supported to look for work and play a more fulfilling role in their communities. We spoke to bakery co-ordinator Erika Sloper who said “Our trainees get involved in making from scratch all the buffet products, such as puff pastry for sausage rolls, chicken puffs, homemade cakes and biscuits. We cater for everything from a finger buffet for 10 to a funeral for 200”. They’re pleased to be offering services for parties, schools, office meetings and networking groups. They have a great selection of children’s party boxes, picnic boxes for school trips and afternoon tea menus with a selection of sandwiches, homemade scones and cakes. Sponsorship Opportunity If you’re a local business, there are many fun and low cost ways to support CRUMBS whilst at work. Why not run a tasty cake sale? They are also looking for a local company to sponsor the initiative and to support their future work. So, whether you need catering for your next event, know someone who would highly benefit from these services or can be a fundraiser to support CRUMBS, be sure to read further details of how you can contribute on their website www.crumbs.org.uk
