Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area New Co-Op Opens on Belle Vue Road Bournemouth's Mayor, Chris Rochester, cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new Co-Operative Food store at Southbourne cross-roads on the 17th August. Crowds of over 100 people queued to be the first to try out the new store, maybe the offer a free bottle of wine for the first 50 had something to do with it too! The new store is open from 7am - 11pm and includes a small bakery, fresh fruit and veg, an alcohol section and all the usual supplies you'd expect to find. The council did receive objections to the new store but the vast majority of people we spoke to were happy to see a Co-Op open. Check out our website (www.southbourne.net) for more photos of the new store and from the opening morning. While in the area don’t forget to visit excellent local eateries, The Beach Hut and Schooner.

Take to the Streets and Help Challenge Homelessness The Rotaract Club of Bournemouth is planning a sponsored 24-hours living as homeless in Bournemouth, in order to raise money and awareness for Michael House. Those taking part in “Challenge Homelessness” can expect to experience a day and night filled with many of the challenges that face someone who is homeless in the area. Starting at 9am on Sat 17th Sept from Michael House (48 Grosvenor Gardens) with nothing but the clothes on their backs, no money, bedding, food or gadgets. The aim of the event is to raise funds and awareness, but also to find out more about the hurdles that homeless people face on our local streets, attitudes of the public towards homelessness and begging, and to meet and hear stories from people who are living like this every day. The event will end with a community lunch, on Sunday 18th Sept at the Bourne Spring Centre. Find out more, call Amy on 07845 812 103.

New Service to Support Carers in Southbourne

We spoke to Samantha Way from East Boro about their new service designed to support carers. Carers of people aged 55 plus in the Southbourne area can now take a break thanks to East Boro’s new Home from Home service. For just £39 a day carers can enjoy time to themselves with the peace of mind their relative or friend is being cared for by a Home from Home host in a safe environment. Each Home from Home host is fully trained, insured and police checked. The cared-for person will be carefully matched to an appropriate host who uses their own home, which has been safety assessed, and has a maximum of four customers. This means activities can be tailored to the interests of the individual whether they enjoy discussing topics, listening to music, playing board games or just enjoy the company of others. The host also provides a home cooked meal and refreshments. The service is funded by Bournemouth Borough Council and the Borough of Poole. Contact Details To apply for East Boro’s Home from Home Service or for more information please contact, Samantha Way at East Boro Housing Trust on 01202 883503 or email sway@ebht.org.uk

Southbourne Literary Society organises a monthly programme with a talk on a literary subject at 7.30pm by well-respected authors and speakers. After refreshments, there’s a second item, maybe music, maybe visual, perhaps in a lighter vein. David Hilliam, its Secretary, tells us, “This year’s programme has some particularly interesting speakers, and we’re very keen to welcome anyone interested in literature and the arts to attend any or all of our events.” The first meeting, on 21st September, will host Dr Alan Chedzoy speaking about ‘The People’s Poet: William Barnes of Dorset.’ The second half of the evening will feature the well-known folksinger, actor and writer, Tim Laycock, who will present a programme of old Dorset Folk Songs. October’s meeting (on the 19th) sees Douglas Eyre being interviewed over his choice of ‘Desert Island Books’ and Joan Roberts talking about Inn Signs. A season’s membership costs £15 and visitors may come for £3 per meeting.
