FIESTAS JANUARY & FEBRUARY Granada Reconquest Festival.

Takes place on the 2nd of January every year (just missed by time of reading this). The annual festival celebrates the day in 1492 when the Christians took back the city from the Moors. The keys to the Alhambra palace were handed over by King Boabdil on the day known as El Dia de la Toma or capture day changing the destiny of Granda ever since. The event of that day is replicated each January 2nd with the raising of the Castille flag from the Torre de Vela, the Alhambra palace tower. The Granada Reconquest Festival event is celebrated throughout the city of Granda which is still dominated by the imposing Alhambra palace.

Gastro Festival

February is usually Madrid’s time of the year to celebrate Spain’s culinary culture. Food is loved in Spain and during this time, the celebrations are blended to incorporate art, culture, film, song, dance, and fashion. Cocktail bars, gourmet shops, restaurants, museums, and art galleries are all incorporated in a city-wide celebration that tilts a hat to the exploits of gastronomy.

The Almond Festival

Every year in February when the almonds are plentiful, folks gather around the market squares to share in the fun of the bounty. The fun includes participants competing to crush as many almonds as they can in 30 minutes. All the crushed almonds are then separated so the shells can be put aside as the produce is kept in wicker baskets. Meanwhile the participants and the spectators alike are entertained with the best live music fiestas Spain’s orchestras can mount as well as a disco.

Los Carnivales

February is the start of the Spanish carnival season which offers some of the best celebrations anywhere in the world easily rivalling those of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The best are to be found in Tenerife and Cadiz where the street parties are world renowned. Colourful processions and extravagant costumes abound in many cities and usually commence on Ash Wednesday. The Cadiz carnival is arguably one of the most extravagant parties around lasting some 10 days. A huge papermache sardine is mourned ( noisily ) as it makes its way along the Cadiz streets to its final resting place!

Sitges Carnival

Feb 6 – 13: Sitges – Catalonia. This is a huge gay event and one of the most flamboyant in Spain with wild parties and which starts on Jueves Lardero (“Fatty Thursday”) with and an enormous feast of local dishes. There is a huge parade and drag queen parade which works its way through the town on the Sunday and Tuesday. 4

Feel-a Tequil-a

by Adele Land

Not for the faint-hearted, this Mexican staple was first produced in the 1600s. Its origins lie in the city of Tequila near Guadalajara, where the red volcanic soil is the perfect place for growing the blue agave used to make the drink.

In the summer months a frozen version of a Margarita can be found in most holiday resorts, refreshing, but not a patch on the traditional which is shaken over ice and then poured perfectly chilled into the glass.

By US law, tequila must contain a minimum of 40% alcohol, making it one of the more potent tipples in the spirits family. Tequila comes in an array of different colours from clear to a distinct amber colour, the darker the liquid, the longer the aging process.

Another cocktail is the Juan Collins, a version of the better known Tom Collins, a refreshing drink made with Tequila, lime juice, agave syrup and club soda.

Contrary to popular belief, the presence of a worm in the bottle is purely a marketing stunt and not a recognised tradition. The traditional Mexican way to drink Tequila is straight up without salt or lime. Outside Mexico is often served with salt and lime on the side. The idea is to moisten the back of your hand, pour on the salt, knock back the Tequila then suck on the lime. The spirit is used in a variety of cocktails, the most popular being the Margarita, a traditional Margarita is made with tequila, Cointreau and lime juice with the rim of the glass dipped in salt or sugar.

6

A Long Island Iced tea also uses Tequila, along with vodka, light rum, gin, triple sec and cola. Popular at parties, the Tequila Slammer is usually made with Tequila and 7-up or ginger ale served straight up without ice or for a posh version (Slammer Royale) switch the 7-up for Champagne! Tequila is definitely an acquired taste but if served in the right type of glass in the correct measure it can fast become a drinks cabinet staple.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander (described as a “magiczoologist,” which in the Harry Potter realm is a person who studies magical creatures), has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. Based on her book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which was inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook. Taken from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), this is the first instalment of the new Harry Potter spin-off franchise, which is being planned as a 3 or 5 film series. The new film is directed by David Yates, who helmed the last four Harry Potter feature films. Marking the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, the script was inspired by her character

Newt Scamander’s Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The film is also being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features. Collaborating with director David Yates behind the scenes are: Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (A River Runs Through It, the Sherlock Holmes movies), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (The English Patient, Dangerous Liaisons, Gandhi, the Harry Potter films), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Alice in Wonderland), Oscarwinning visual effects supervisor Tim Burke (Gladiator, the Harry Potter films), Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Christian Manz (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). POSSIBLE SPOILERS: Features a cameo by a young Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grendelwald, characters from the original Harry Potter movies.

The film opened in cinemas worldwide in November of 2016, expect the DVD release fairly soon 8

Mobility Scooters & Motorised Wheelchairs.

A possible ban (in some areas) for using these on pavements? The DGT has published a notification in which it intends to enforce a control on small motorised vehicles on pedestrian areas and pavements, which, although intended to reduce the risk to pedestrians from collisions with such vehicles as Segways, it also effectively bans mobility scooters.

However, there is still some hope as the DGT has also said that local authorities themselves can issue an ordinance which authorises the use of these vehicles on pavements, and so each municipality would have to ensure that they issue local rules to permit their use.

The DGT states that it is impossible to assimilate the vehicles as pedestrians on account of them being motorised, and so they must only be used on the road.

It is also highly likely that the ruling will be heavily contested as most of the users of mobility scooters need them in order to provide the means to travel around towns and cities, and so restricting the free movement of the disabled would not be an option easily enforced.

There have been numerous reports of Segways causing problems when mixing with pedestrians, and similar reports have also been filed following collisions with mobility scooters. Because these vehicles move faster than pedestrians, and lack their own space to move, they pose too great a risk for the DGT to be satisfied that they can be used safely on the pavement.

The ruling also states that the person in control of these vehicles do not need to hold a licence and insurance is not mandatory, although it is optional and recommended.

Current UK Rules & Highway Code for powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters. (Called Invalid Carriages in law)

Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters (rules 36 to 37) Rule 36: There is one class of manual wheelchair (called a Class 1 invalid carriage) and two classes of powered wheelchairs and powered mobility scooters. Manual wheelchairs and Class 2 vehicles are those with an upper speed limit of 4 mph (6 km/h) and are designed to be used on pavements. Class 3 vehicles are those with an upper speed limit of 8 mph (12 km/h) and are equipped to be used on the road as well as the pavement. Rule 37: When you are on the road you should obey the guidance and rules for other vehicles; when on the pavement you should follow the guidance and rules for pedestrians. On pavements (rules 38 & 39) Rule 38: Pavements are safer than roads and should be used when available. You should give pedestrians priority and show consideration for other pavement users, particularly those with a hearing or visual impairment who may not be aware that you are there. Rule 39: Powered wheelchairs and scooters MUST NOT travel faster than 4 mph (6 km/h) on pavements or in pedestrian areas. You may need to reduce your speed to adjust to other pavement users who may not be able to move out of your way quickly enough or where the pavement is too narrow. (in accordance with the Law UICHR reg 4) These are for illustrative purposes only and ARE NOT indicative to Spain.

Things to do... Places to see.

Caminito del Rey:

Previously the world’s scariest footpath. Location.

The Gaitanes Gorge, located in the western part of Baetic Mountains of Spain “El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes” is an outstanding canyon, with its walls reaching at some points 700 meters high and just 10 meters narrow. It is craved by the Guadalhorce River and it is accessible by the Guadalhorce reservoirs in the North and by the village of El Chorro in the South. Built 100 metres above the gorge, a 3km long winding mountainside pathway was closed in 2001 following several deaths of adrenalin seekers attempting to navigate the now decrepit walkway. Known as Spain’s most dangerous path, or the most dangerous walkway in the world, the Caminito del Rey (The King’s Little Pathway) is over 100 years old. The perilous concrete trail winds through steep limestone cliffs near the small village of El Chorro, (just North of Málaga in Adalucia) and into a hidden valley. There have been at least 5 deaths on the Caminito del Rey, the most recent few occurring in 2000, and many more accidents over the years. The path hadn’t been maintained since the 1920’s — rust eats away at many of the metal support beams. Large gaping holes in the concrete were common. Sometimes whole sections of the treacherous walkway are completely missing, after they’ve crashed down to the bottom of the canyon below.

14

2015 Path Restoration.

Work just finished on a €3.12 million restoration program that transformed the entire walkway into a much safer route, opening up the path to more people and regular tourism. The aging concrete was replaced with wooden slats and glass panels with a handrail. While more people will now get to enjoy the views of this magnificent canyon, sadly the adventurous spirit of the Camino has changed now that it’s fixed up. Those thrill seekers who were crazy enough to hike and climb the treacherous path consider themselves lucky as now it has been sanitized into a tourist attraction, but that’s good news for the rest of us!

History of the path.

The walkway was completed in 1905 after 4 years of construction so workers could move materials back and forth between the two hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls on either end of the canyon. A water canal also weaves its way through tunnels in the mountains. The suspended catwalk allowed easy access to this canal for inspections and maintenance work, controlling the flow of water when necessary using a series of steel doors lowered into the canal with gears. Spanish King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the pathway in 1921, which is why it’s now called “The King’s Little Pathway”. The King himself walked the length of it to marvel at the beautiful & scenic landscape.

Things to do... Places to see.

Reopening.

The reopening of El Caminito del Rey is of huge importance to the local area. “When people think of Málaga, they think of the sun and beaches, but now this is something totally different,” says Francisco Vázquez, an engineer who worked on the project, “It’s another experience. A pretty special experience concentrated into a short time.” Selected as one of Lonely Planet’s top new travel experiences for 2015, the reopening of the pathway has been anticipated for years. Already the route is booked up most of the time. Groups of 50 people are allowed to enter the walkway every half an hour and the organisers expect to see 600 people walking the path each day. It may not be the world’s scariest hike anymore, not even close, but Caminito del Rey’s true attraction is still there. Stunning views and an awe-inducing sense of scale from the sheer rock walls and dizzyingly high pathway will stay with you long after you’ve stepped down from the hanging bridge and walked away. Those looking for a bit of excitement mixed with beautiful views it may just be the ticket, if you can get one. Reservations have to be made in advance and can be obtained by visiting: www.caminitodelrey.info Entry permits are 10 Euros per person and payment is made online. If you’re struggling to get a ticket online or for the day you want then the only real alternative is to stay in a local hotel. At both of these hotels, Hotel Posada del Conde or Hotel La Garganta, you can ask the staff to reserve tickets for you. 15

A POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR THE NEW YEAR FOR NEW WAVE VILLAS. 2016 was a surprising year in Almería real estate. January through to Easter were particularly busy with non-UK buyers. These months saw New Wave Villas complete sales with purchasers from Sweden, Holland, France, Belgium and Eire, on properties in a wide range of prices. After Easter came the so-called Brexit uncertainty with potential buyers looking at the possibility of a UK exit from Europe in different ways. Some chose to make a quick decision on buying, with a view to the inevitable drop in the value of sterling, while others decided to hold off of their purchase until after the referendum when things were expected to be clearer. Following the shock result, experts predicted doom and gloom for the Spanish housing market relating to overseas buyers, concerned vendors discussed dropping prices anticipating a sharp slump in sales. What ultimately transpired, for New Wave Villas, was a record breaking September and October with both sides taking advantage of the drop in Sterling. Vendors were in a position to accept slightly lower offers if they were taking money back to the UK, thus guaranteeing buyers a good deal on their purchase. As we enter 2017, we are extremely short of good quality, well-priced properties to sell. This applies to all prices ranges and property types. We charge a 3% commission and never ask for any payment upfront or tie vendors into complicated contracts. We look forward to seeing you and having the opportunity to list your property.

Valentines Day

Saint

Like many saints, actual details about Valentine’s life are hard to come by. There are at least three saints with that name, but the famous one was a Christian priest (or possibly a bishop) who lived in Rome in the third century. He appears to have been imprisoned, beaten with clubs and eventually beheaded on the orders of the Emperor Claudius II, all for being a Christian: not a terribly promising start for the saint of love. Luckily, his execution coincided with the pagan festival of Lupercalia, dedicated to Juno, the goddess of women and fertility, when boys were encouraged to draw from a jar the names of girls written on slips of paper. After Pope Gelasius set aside the day to honour St Valentine in 496, the saint gradually became adopted as the patron saint of lovers. Later his canonical responsibilities were extended to include epilepsy, fainting, greetings card manufacturers and plague. The casket containing the “remains” of St Valentine was lost in the cupboard of a Dublin church until its rediscovery in the Fifties.

Birds

The idea that Valentine’s Day is the date birds start to mate dates from the 14th century, and bird superstitions are common. In Cornwall, young men would launch an early morning hunt with a net for an owl and two sparrows. If they could capture the birds without injury and get to the inn before the females of the house had risen, they were rewarded with three pots of ale laced with a shot of wormwood. No records are kept of what happened to the birds.

Cards

The first man to send a Valentine note was a Frenchman. Charles, Duke of Orleans, was imprisoned in the Tower of London after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. He remained there for 25 years and wrote 60 love poems addressed to his wife, which are claimed as the first formal “valentines”. One even refers to her as “Ma tres doulce Valentinée”. Later, books of sentimental poems were published to help lovers express their feelings. Often these were practical how-to books: one published in 1797 was called The Young Man’s

18

Valentine Writer. From this it was a short step to ready-printed cards with verses and sketches known as “mechanical verses”, often sent anonymously. In the 1840s, a young American woman, Esther Howland (1828-1904), received an English Valentine and decided to introduce the tradition to the United States. She produced cards carrying messages like “Weddings now are all the go, Will you marry me or no”. The cards fell out of fashion in Britain by the 1890s but more than a century later a billion cards are sent each year worldwide, with 85 per cent purchased by women.

Hearts

The traditional Valentine’s heart shape might derive from the seed of the silphium plant, used in ancient times as a herbal contraceptive. Early visual representations in religious art made the heart look more like a pine cone.

The characteristic indentation in the top first appeared in a book called Documenti d’Amore by the artist Francesco da Barbarino in 1347. Barbarino worked in Bologna, where human anatomy was all the rage, so it is likely he had seen human hearts at first hand. The idea of the heart having two sides echoed the biblical image of the two tablets of the law, written in the heart. The island of Galesnjak in Croatia is a naturally formed heart shape.

Love

The iconic hippy LOVE image was created by Robert Indiana, a leader of the New York pop art movement. Indiana claimed that his inspiration came from the inscription on the wall of a Christian Scientist church, which he had attended as a child. In 1973, the US Post Office reproduced it on a Valentine’s Day stamp which sold more than 300 million units and made $25 million for the Post Office. Indiana had never copyrighted the design and so earned nothing. He recently emerged from his island retreat to create a matching red, white and blue sculpture of HOPE for the Obama campaign.

11 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS

Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

GET ORGANISED One problem I have encountered myself in the past, and more regularly when helping others, is the matter of organising 1000s & 1000s of photos on your computer. Each photo session can result in hundreds of photos that need reviewing and post processing and we all have our own ways of importing and adding them from our cameras to our computers but where do they go and do- can you find them easily in the future? There are basically 3 methods in which you have your photos to hand from your computer: • Online photo services. • Imported and stored using dedicated photo software. • As individual files. (My preferred method)

Online photo services. All the big players (Google, Apple, Microsoft... even Amazon) have services that will take all the photos you can upload. And, get this, some of them are totally free (or near it). Google’s service is totally free and the services from Amazon and Microsoft are so affordable, they might as well be free. Apple’s service (called iCloud Photo Library) costs a lot more than the competitors but it integrates so nicely with the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, it makes the service very compelling for folks in the Apple world. While most of the online photos services rely on a local application on your device (Phone, PC, etc) to view photos, some of them allow you to log into their system and view your photos that way. One of the great benefits to these systems is that even if your device can’t hold every single photo, they make them available to you on demand (sort of like how streaming music services work). Pros • All your photos are always (in theory) available • Photos are automatically backed up Cons • Can use a lot of mobile data 8 Can be slow • Often has costs • Someone else has your photos

Photo Management software. There are a lot of products out there that help you organize your photos the way you organize your music (think: iTunes). In fact, if you have a Mac there’s a good chance you already have this software. It’s called iPhoto and it’s likely in the dock at the bottom of your Mac’s (keep in mind, Apple just changed to a new program called Photos and it now ships on all new Macs). If you run Windows, a very popular option is called Picasa from Google as well as Windows Photo Gallery from Microsoft.

keeping your photos in good order All of these program let you organize your photos into virtual folder or albums. That means you have your main photo library (all your pictures) and you can divvy them up into more than one place. For example, you could have an album of little Joey’s whole life and you could have an album of Christmas pictures that also contain some of the same photos from Joey’s life. The software doesn’t make a duplicate, however. It just knows how to display the photo in multiple places if you want it to. The more photos you store, however, the slower the program can run. Pros • Easy to use • Very flexible Cons • Can be slow • Harder to backup

Individual file management. This method simply requires you copying/moving the files from your camera to a folder on your computer. Some people have a folder of tens of thousands of files... All with names like IMG_0589.jpg, which is not very helpful. In order to avoid this it’s best to store the files by date taken, even as far as grouping all the photos from each particular shoot into one folder. I start with a main Photos folder, then each year has a folder and then inside each year has a month and then inside each month has a project or shoot titled to remember it like “Dog Walk Sunday 8th” etc. It’s pretty easy to understand but it’s a fair bit of manual work each time I’m taking photos off my camera but I know where they are, when they were taken and they’re all grouped nicely for me to find at a later date. for example: //desktop/Photography/2017/Jan/ Dog Walk Sunday 8th/ That folder will then have, let’s say, 67 photos in that I took that day. It’s then up to you to keep only the photos you want to keep. Before online services and dedicate management software, it was the only option we had but I continue to use this system as I like to make regular back ups (easy to find my files and manage them) and I don’t trust online services. Pros • Easy to understand • Easy to backup Cons • Very manual (requires a fair bit of computer literacy) • Time Consuming • Not easily searchable for individual photos.

The Only Way Is...

MARBS With the new motorway now opened why not take a drive to Marbella or “Marbs” as they call it in the reality TV show TOWIE. The Only Way Is Essex cast and crew have recently visted Marbella and made a few episodes from this area.

Marbella is a city and resort area on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, part of the Andalusia region. The Sierra Blanca Mountains are the backdrop to 27 km of sandy Mediterranean beaches, villas, hotels, and golf courses. West of Marbella town, the Golden Mile of prestigious nightclubs and coastal estates leads to Puerto Banús marina, filled with luxury yachts, and surrounded by upmarket boutiques and bars. Marbella offers visitors the most extensive range and quality of tourism products to be found anywhere in the Mediterranean region. Through this web site, you can glimpse just a tiny portion of our tourist, cultural, leisure and enjoyment reality. The contents of this web site will help you make up your mind to visit us and experience for yourself the sensations that Marbella has to offer. What is known as Marbella’s Golden Mile is actually a stretch of four miles (6.4 km) which begins at the western edge of Marbella city and stretches to Puerto Banús. The area is exclusive and home to some of Marbella’s most luxurious villas and estates with spectacular views of mountain and sea, such as the Palace of King Fahd, as well as

some landmark hotels, among them the Melia Don Pepe, the Hotel Marbella Club and the Hotel Puente Romano. The area developed during the tourism boom of the 1960s, where may be found the ruins of the Roman villa by the Rio Verde, and El Ángel, where the land of the old forge works was converted to an agricultural colony, and the Botanical Gardens of El Ángel with gardens of three different styles, dating from the 8th century.

The Golden Mile is divided into two parts by a motorway that runs through it. Along the motorway are strings of business centres, fivestar hotels, golf course and other services. The beachside of the motorway is fully developed, while the mountain side is still undergoing development. Urbanisations in the area’s sea side are Alhambra del Mar, La Alcazaba, Las Torres, Los Verdiales, Marbellamar, Marina Marbella, Oasis, Rio Verde and Santa Margarita. On the Mountain side of the motorway, the following urbanisations are currently developing: Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles, Cascada de Camoján, Jardines Colgantes, Marbella Hill Club, El Venero, El Batatal, La Capellania, La Virginia, Carolina, El Vicario, Altos de Salamanca, Casas del Señorio de Marbella, Coto Real, Ancon Sierra. The Golden Mile should not be confused with the New Golden Mile which is a marketing name given to the area between San Pedro del Alcantara and Estepona.

LIFESTYLE Far more than a recent fitness craze, Pilates has been developed & practiced since the 1920’s when Joseph & Clara Pilates opened their ‘Body Conditioning Gym’ in New York City.

Look Better. Feel Better. Live Better. The popularity of the Pilates Method has spread steadily since the day when Pilates first opened his studio. Pilates has now become a worldwide phenomenon with over 12 million people practicing, and the numbers continue to grow due to its effectiveness and adaptability. 26

E

The Joseph Pilates Story Joseph Pilates was born near Düsseldorf, Germany in 1883. Little is known about his early life, but he appears to have been a frail child, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. His drive and determination to overcome these ailments led him to become a competent gymnast, diver and skier. In 1912 Pilates lived in England working as a circus performer, boxer and self-defence instructor. During the First World War, he was interned with other German nationals. During this time he developed his technique of physical fitness further, by teaching his fellow internees. During the latter part of the War, he served as an orderly in a hospital on the Isle of Man where he worked with patients unable to walk. He attached bed springs to the hospital beds to help support the patients’ limbs, leading to the development of his famous piece of equipment known as the ‘Cadillac’. Much of his equipment, although slightly adapted, is still in use today in many Pilates Studios. Pilates emigrated to the USA in the early 1920s with his wife Clara, and together they developed and taught the method in their ‘body-conditioning gym’ in New York in 1926. The studio featured much of the Apparatus designed to enhance his rehabilitation work. It soon became very popular, particularly with the dance community, as it offered a chance to improve technique or recover from injury. Word spread quickly and many celebrities of the day visited his studio. These included dance legends such as Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine and Martha Graham, as well as the actor Jose Ferrer and the author Christopher Isherwood. Originally 60% of the clientele were men. In 1932 Pilates published a booklet called ‘Your Health’ and followed this with another called ‘Return to Life Through Contrology’ in 1945. Through these writings and his students, his method was passed on after his death in 1967 at the age of 83. During his lifetime this method of exercise was called Contrology. It was only after his death that it became known as the Pilates Method. While Joe is the man behind the method, it was his wife Clara that became the real teacher in the studio and allowed the method to be passed on to apprentices. The ‘Pilates Elders’ (the handful of people who trained directly in the first NY

Studio) talk of Clara being the nurturing force behind the man; Clara established the tradition of evolving and adapting the Pilates method to suit the individual needs of clients. This is a tradition Pilates Foundation Teachers are proud to continue. Not much was spoken in the original studio (English was not Joe’s first language), so Joe and Clara relied heavily on handson corrections to teach the method. “They wouldn’t talk, they would sculpt you” is how Pilates Elder Mary Bowen describes being in the studio. The Pilates Foundation is proud to promote the traditon of hands-on teaching skills in our Teachers.

Poor posture and alignment (how our body parts function in relation to each other) and imbalanced muscular tensions (from habit or injury) are corrected by performing specific, controlled movements under the watchful eye of a qualified Pilates Teacher.

Principles of Pilates Joe Pilates based his work on three principles: Breath, whole-body health and whole-body commitment; with the whole-body incompassing mind, body and spirit. It is in the honouring of the Pilates Principles that the depth of the work is achieved. These Principles are traditionally cited as:

• Breath • Concentration • Centring • Control • Precision • Flow

The Benefits

Pilates can help you: • Improve your posture, health and overall fitness • Reach specific physical goals & challenge your ability • Rehabilitate after injury, surgery or illness • Return your body to movement • Expand your body awareness • Develop trust in your body’s abilities • Look better, feel better, live better • Live a happier, more-fulfilling life

POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS We have grown to love and sometimes hate the characters in these law enforcement dramas so, here is an insight into some of the favourite shows that are of the “Boys in Blue”

Z-Cars ran for a total of 803 episodes, of which fewer than half have survived. Regular stars included Stratford Johns (Detective Inspector Barlow), Frank Windsor (Det. Sgt Watt), James Ellis (Bert Lynch) and Brian Blessed (“Fancy” Smith). The name Z-Cars relates to an imaginary “Z” Division of the local constabulary. The theme tune was based on a traditional Liverpool folk song, and was adopted by Everton Football Club as its official anthem.

Dixon of Dock Green (1955 – 1976)

The Sweeney (1975 – 1978)

Dixon of Dock Green was a BBC television series about daily life at a London police station, with the emphasis on petty crime, successfully controlled through common sense and human understanding. The central character was a mature and sympathetic police constable, George Dixon, played by Jack Warner in all of the 432 episodes. Dixon was the embodiment of a typical ‘bobby’ who would be familiar with the area and its residents in which he patrolled and often lived there himself. The series contrasted sharply with later police programmes which reflected a more aggressive policing culture; however its popularity should not be underestimated, retaining a faithful following throughout its run and being voted second most popular programme on British TV in 1961.

The Sweeney is a 1970s British television police drama focusing on two members of the Flying Squad, a branch of the Metropolitan Police specialising in tackling armed robbery and violent crime in London. The programme’s title derives from Sweeney Todd, which is Cockney rhyming slang for “Flying Squad”. The programme was shot entirely on 16mm film by Thames Television’s film division, Euston Films. It originally broadcast on ITV between 2 January 1975 and 28 December 1978 at 21:00–22:00 weekday (usually Monday) with repeated showings at the same time until the early 1980s. It starred John Thaw as Detective Inspector Jack Regan, and Dennis Waterman as his partner Detective Sergeant George Carter. Such was its popularity in the UK that it spawned two cinema released feature filmspin-offs, Sweeney! And Sweeney 2.

Z Cars (1962 - 1978)

Taggart (1983 – 2010)

Z Cars was a British television drama series centred on the work of mobile uniformed police in the fictional town of Newtown, based on Kirkby in Lancashire (now Merseyside). Produced by the BBC. The series differed sharply from earlier police procedurals. With its lessusual Northern setting, it injected a new element of harsh realism into the image of the police, which some found unwelcome.

Taggart is a Scottish detective television programme made by STV Productions for the ITVnetwork. The series revolved around a group of detectives, initially in the Maryhill CID of Strathclyde Police, though various storylines were set in other parts of Greater Glasgow and in other areas of Scotland. The team operated out of the fictional John Street police station.

Over the years we have all been fascinated with the various police dramas or series that have been showed on the TV from Dixon of Dock Green to The Bill.

POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS 40

POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS Taggart was one of the UK’s longest-running television dramas and the longest-running police drama. Mark McManus, who played the title character Jim Taggart, died in 1994; however, the series continued under the same name. The series theme music is “No Mean City” sung by Maggie Bell.

has also been repeated on other digital stations, including Gold, Alibi, Watch, Dave and Drama. In March 2010, executives at ITV announced that the network did not intend to recommission The Bill, and that filming on the series would cease on 14 June 2010. The last episode aired on 31 August 2010.

The Bill (1984 – 2010)

Heartbeat (1992 – 2010)

The Bill was a British police procedural television series. The programme originated from a one-off drama, Woodentop, broadcast in August 1983.

Heartbeatis a British police drama series set in 1960s North Riding of Yorkshire and broadcast on ITV in 18series between 1992 and 2010. It was made by ITV Studios(formerly Yorkshire Television[1]) at the Leeds Studios and on location. Heartbeat first aired on Friday 10 April 1992 (it was later moved to Sunday evenings). The 372nd and final episode aired on Sunday 12 September 2010.

In its final year on air, The Bill was broadcast once a week, usually on Tuesdays or Thursdays, in a one-hour format. The programme focused on the lives and work of one shift of police officers, rather than on any particular aspect of police work. The Bill was the longestrunning police procedural television series in the United Kingdom, and among the longest running of any British television series. Although highly acclaimed by fans and critics, the series attracted controversy on several occasions. An episode broadcast in 2008 was criticised for featuring fictional treatment for multiple sclerosis. The series has also faced more general criticism concerning its levels of violence, particularly prior to 2009, when it occupied a pre-watershed slot.

The Bill won several awards, including BAFTAs, a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain award and Best Drama at the Inside Soap Awards in 2009, this being the series’ fourth consecutive win. Throughout its twenty-seven-year run, the programme was always broadcast on the main ITV network. In later years, episodes of the show were repeated on ITV3 on their week of broadcast. The series

Heartbeat proved popular from the beginning, when early series consistently drew over 10 million viewers.[In 2001,Heartbeat came sixth in the UK TV ratings list with a peak audience of 13.82 million, and it was sixth again in 2003, with 12.8 million viewers. In autumn 2008, typical viewing figures were around 6 million per episode.

The Best of the Rest

Other programmes that we are sure many of our readers will remember include, The Avengers from 1961, Randall & Hopkirk Deceased 1969, Rumpole of The Bailey 1975, The Professionals 1977, New Scotland Yard 1972, Juliet Bravo 1980, Silent Witness still going strong from 1996, Cracker 1993 and New Tricks that is still on the TV and started in 2004.

The show combined traditional sitcom style with violent slapstick, non-sequitur plot turns, and surrealism. These older styles were mixed with the working and lowermiddle class attitudes of the growing 1980s alternative comedy boom, in which all the principal performers except Ryan had been involved. Every episode except one featured a live performance by a band, including Madness, Motörhead, and The Damned. This was a device used to qualify the series for a larger budget, as “variety” shows attracted higher fees than “comedy”.

The main characters were four undergraduate students who were sharing a house: aggressive punk Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), conceited wannabe anarchist Rick (Rik Mayall), oppressed paranoid hippie Neil (Nigel Planer), and the suave, charming Mike (Christopher Ryan). It also featured Alexei Sayle, who played various members of the Balowski family— most often Jerzei Balowski, the quartet’s landlord—and occasional independent characters, such as the train driver in “Bambi” and the Mussolini-lookalike Police Chief in “Cash”.

The Young Ones was a British sitcom, broadcast in the United Kingdom from 1982 to 1984 in two six-part series. Shown on BBC2, it featured anarchic, offbeat humour which helped bring alternative comedy to television in the 1980s and made household names of its writers and performers. In 1985, it was shown on MTV, one of the first non-music television shows on the fledgling channel. In a 2004 poll, it ranked at number 31 in the BBC’s list of Britain’s Best Sitcoms.

ION T A N I T S E D .. REPORT.

Holidays on a budget... We all love a bargain in whatever we buy, and booking a holiday is no exception.

It can be a bit of a minefield when planning that special vacation on a budget, should you book early, or leave it to see if there are any last-minute deals? The answer is, there are no hard and fast rules. When it comes to flights and hotels, it’s all about supply and demand, a popular flight route, for example, will sell out early and likely increase in price as the date approaches, the same for hotel rooms. A less popular route may see lower prices nearer to the departure, as seats remain unsold. Also when planning a trip, check if there are any special events on in the area at that time, if there are, prices will soar for both flights and accommodation, this is especially prevalent in big cities. To keep costs down, if you can, avoid school holidays or local bank holidays, the prices for flights can treble during this time, whereas if you were to alter your dates by a couple of days either side you will make big savings. Other ways to save on travel costs include, booking on your credit card, some major card providers offer cheap rates on hotels, car rental and travel insurance and others are linked to airline reward programmes where you can rack up points to use for upgrades on future travel. Another way of saving is by being loyal to travel websites, Hotels.com reward loyal clients with free rooms & Booking.com often offers preferential rates. Websites like Trivago, do the price comparisons for you and in many cases the savings can be considerable. Just be aware you may get an inferior room in a less desirable location in the building, albeit the same room type, than if you booked direct with the Hotel. 44

More and more independent travellers are using Airbnb, a peer to peer, home-hosting site offering affordable accommodation around the world, with the emphasis on large cities. Most people I have spoken to had good experiences of booking this type of accommodation and boasted big savings as compared to city hotels. One thing to be aware of is that numerous cities, especially in the US have restricted, or in some cases, banned, the short-term rental of rooms and apartments, so remember to check the laws in your chosen destination. If you are travelling on a budget and are not worried about planning ahead, many smaller, independent hotels will negotiate on price if you just show up on the day, especially if they have a good deal of empty rooms, I wouldn’t necessarily try this at the Savoy, however, but you never know! When booking flights, especially long haul, if you can’t stick with the same airline every time then try to use one which has a codeshare agreement with other airlines, this way on most routes your reward or mileage points will be transferable. Again, spending money on day to day purchases with some leading credit cards you can achieve mileage points on certain airlines and this increases considerable if you take out a credit card affiliated with an airline.

A useful search portal for flights is Skyscanner, you can compare flight prices and times on one easy to view page. My tip is, once you find the flight you prefer, check which airline is the carrier and then go to the airline’s own website, invariably the price will be the same and you can log your membership number and reap the rewards on future travel. If flying in economy isn’t for you, don’t rush to book premium or business cabins, wait a while and see if the airline offers upgrades nearer the time, many airlines will give you the option to upgrade for a much reduced price at the time of check in. Other airlines, such as Iberia, have a bidding system where you enter your credit card details online and choose an upgrade price you would be prepared to pay, if you are successful you will be advised by email, another great way to fly more comfortably without breaking the bank. While not necessarily a direct saving, when booking long-haul flights, check the aircraft type and configuration, aircraft with a 2-42 seat configuration are more comfortable than the more popular 3-4-3 and you may find you don’t need to pay for that upgrade. Another thing to check when booking flights is baggage allowance, some airlines include hold baggage and others charge an inflated fee. A stingy baggage allowance is no good if you are planning a shopping spree! If, after all that shopping, you think you may need to check an extra bag, remember to do it online and not at the airport, the savings are considerable. If your next big vacation is to be a cruise, there are endless offers, tricks and deals to be exploited. Find yourself a good cruise consultant, book your dream cruise and let them stay on top of

upcoming offers and freebies which they can deal you in on. Pester them on at least a monthly basis to make sure you are not missing out! All the experienced cruisers I know end up with stateroom upgrades, free drinks packages and other offers which aren’t even advertised on the cruise line website. It pays to be canny in cruising. When offered a selection of different special add-ins, the unlimited beverage package is number one for value, even if you are not a big drinker, the costs soon add up with drinks by the pool and wine with dinner. Another good deal is to get the on-board gratuities included then you can choose your favourite crew members to leave a special tip with at the end of the cruise. When renting a car, especially in the US, don’t always choose the biggest most expensive model. You will find at many airport depots, they often run out of the mid-priced vehicles and you will be guaranteed a free upgrade, whether you want one or not! On a recent trip, I booked a mid-sized SUV but on arrival they had run out and I ended up with a 7-litre V8 pick-up, straight out of a Hollywood action movie. As a die-hard petrol head, it was perfect for me but not for the faint-hearted driver! It goes without saying that wherever you travel you should take out travel insurance, in far flung destinations, especially the US and Canada, the cost of healthcare for the uninsured is the size of a small mortgage. Even when travelling within Europe, it is good to take out insurance in case of lengthy flight delays or lost baggage. There are many comparison sites where you can find the best deals but check the standard of cover carefully. If you are a frequent traveller, consider an annual policy which includes unlimited trips of a maximum duration per trip. Although the trend for independent travel seems to be increasing, package holidays can be very good value and save you lots of time. With a package holiday the hard work of negotiating good deals on flights, hotels and often travel insurance has already been done for you, leaving you with nothing to do except decide how many swimsuits to pack! These are just a few handy tips to help you get the best deal for your dollar, package for your pound and without using up your euros! The most important thing is to enjoy your holiday whatever it cost.

THE MAN WHO NEVER WAS The story of Major William Martin & “Operation Mincemeat”

In 1943, British Naval Intelligence and MI5 devised a cunning plan to fool German command into thinking that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia instead of the actual objective; Sicily. All the plan required was a floating corpse and a fake identity. Called Operation Mincemeat, the Allies planned to trick the Germans into believing they had, by accident, intercepted “top secret” documents giving details of the Allied invasion plans. To do this, they decided they needed a dead body. With the help of a pathologist, Naval Intelligence obtained the corpse of one Glyndwr Michael, a homeless man who had died after ingesting rat poison. Michael was given the new identity of Major William “Bill” Martin and an extensive false identity that could be gleaned from items placed on his body. The documents and back-story created for Major Martin included love letters and a fiancé, a receipt for the purchase of an engagement ring, theatre tickets, bank statements, and clothing purchase receipts. Once the back-story was complete, Major Martin was dressed in the uniform of a Royal Marine, and a briefcase containing the fake “top secret” documents was handcuffed to his wrist. A life-jacket was also placed on Major Martin to make it appear that he was the victim of a plane crash at sea. Under cover of darkness on the evening of April 30, Lt. Norman Jewell, captain of the submarine HMS Seraph, read the 39th Psalm and Michael’s body was gently pushed into the sea off the coast of Huevla, Spain with a short ceremony. Major Martin was listed on the British casualties list alongside other officers who had also died in plane crashes at sea, including that of British film star Leslie Howard. When the body was found just hours later by a Spanish fisherman, it was reported to a German Intelligence agent in Spain. Now they just had to wait. Major Martin’s possessions were returned to the British, but testing revealed that the “top secret” documents had been opened, read, and resealed. As further proof that the deception had been a success, German defensive efforts were substantially redirected a short time later with reinforcements being sent to Greece, Sardinia, and Corsica instead of Sicily. The Allies invaded Sicily on July 9th, but the Germans remained convinced for more than two weeks that the real invasion of Sicily was nothing more than a diversionary tactic. It is estimated that thousands of lives were saved as a result of Operation Mincemeat.

1: The forged identity card for Captain Martin (acting Major). 2 & 3: The crew & HMS Seraph with Captain Jewell inthe centre. 4: Photo of fiancé “Pam” (actually Nancy jean Leslie). 5: The body of Glyndwr Michael prior to being placed in the sea. 6: The gravestone in Huelva.

Major Martin was eventually buried with full military honours in the cemetery “Nuestra Señora de la Soledad” in Huelva, Spain. The gravestone reads, “William Martin, born 29 March 1907, died 24 April 1943, beloved son of John Glyndwyr Martin and the late Antonia Martin of Cardiff, Wales.” After the British Government revealed Michael’s true identity in 1998, the gravestone was amended to read, “Glyndwr Michael; Served as Major William Martin, RM.” The grave is a fitting tribute to Glyndwr Michael and his alternate identity; Major William Martin: “The man who never was”.

You can read the full story in the book by Ewen Motagu or watch the 1956 film of the same name. 53

our regular feature bringing you a host of astonishing facts and figures from around the globe.

Unusual museums.

When you travel to a new place, it’s always good to check out some of the local museums. And when you’ve had your fill of art, science, and history, it’s also good to check out some of the lesser known museums - places that are full of oddities, peculiarities, and downright weirdness. The Icelandic Phallological Museum, Iceland

The Icelandic Phallological Museum is probably the only museum in the world to contain a collection of phallic specimens belonging to all the various types of mammal found in a single country. Phallology is an ancient science which, until recent years, has received very little attention in Iceland, except as a borderline field of study in other academic disciplines such as history, art, psychology, literature and other artistic fields like music and ballet. Now, thanks to The Icelandic Phallological Museum, it is finally possible for individuals to undertake serious study into the field of phallology in an organized, scientific fashion.

The Dog Collar Museum, England

A unique collection of historic and fascinating dog collars has been built up over the years and is now the only one of its kind in Great Britain. Mrs. Gertrude Hunt most generously presented her collection of collars to the Leeds Castle Foundation in memory of her husband, John Hunt, the distinguished medievalist. The collection of over 100 collars and related exhibits has since been added to and enhanced by the Foundation itself. Spanning five centuries, the collection contains examples of collars from fearsome fetters for the great hunting hounds of the past, to canine couture for 21st century pooches

Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum, Tennessee, USA

When you find yourself in this part of the world stop by and see over 20,000 sets of Salt and Pepper Shakers from around the world, and a huge Pepper Mill collection! A trained anthropologist, Andrea Ludden is writing a definitive study on salt and pepper shakers. She displays her personal collection more than 22,000 sets of salt and pepper shakers in a building that was specially appointed just for them. There is also a sister museum in Spain, “Museo de Saleros y Pimenteros” in Castell de Guadalest, not far from benidorm!

The Mütter Museum, Philadelphia, USA

The Mütter Museum originated as a collection of specimens and medical tools used for education in medicine. Now the Museum boasts a collection of over 20,000 specimens, of which about 13% are on display. This does not include the large literary collection contained within the Historical Medical Library, which is also housed within the The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. It is currently the only place where members of the public can view slides of Albert Einstein’s brain!

Cancun Underwater Museum, Cancun, Mexico

In 2009 a monumental underwater contemporary museum of art called MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) was formed in the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. The Museum aims to demonstrate the interaction between art and environmental science and form part of a complex reef structure for marine life to colonize and inhabit whilst increasing biomass on a grand scale. All of the sculptures are fixed to the seabed and made from specialized materials used to promote coral life. The total installations occupy an area of over 420sq meters of barren substrate and weighing in at over 200 tons. 58

Museum of Broken Relationships, Zagreb, Croatia

The museum was founded by two Zagreb-based artists, Olinka Vištica, a film producer, and Dražen Grubišic, a sculptor. After their four-year love relationship came to an end in 2003, the two joked about setting up a museum to house the left-over personal items. Three years later, Grubišic contacted Vištica with this idea, this time in earnest. They started asking their friends to donate objects left behind from their break-ups, and the collection was born. It was shown to the public for the first time in 2006, in Glyptotheque Zagreb, as a part of the 41st Zagreb Salon.

International UFO Museum, Roswell, New Mexico, USA

Ground Zero for Roswell alien pilgrims is the International UFO Museum and Research Center. Its motto, “The Truth Is Here,” applies not only to its displays about the thing that crashed nearby in 1947, but to other related areas of study: crop circles, alien abductions, Area 51, etc. A replica of an ancient Mayan sarcophagus lid from Mexico, which supposedly shows a man blasting off in a spaceship, backdates the truth timeline to well before the “it-was-just-a-weather-balloon” era. The museum has occupied an old downtown movie theatre since 1997, but plans a new $14 million building several blocks north, across the street from Roswell’s saucer-shaped McDonald’s.

Condom Museum, Thailand

Thailand is one of the world’s largest producers of condoms, surpassing even traditional giants like The Netherlands. (Durex has one of its main production plants here.), so it seems natural that they’d have a museum dedicated to them. All the colors of the sexual rainbow are on display inside the Ministry of Health’s recently opened condom museum, deep in the bowels of Nonthaburi, just outside of Bangkok in the Department of Medical Sciences, set amidst the maze that is the Thai Ministry of Health.

Sulabh International Toilet Museum, India

This is a museum with a message: A call for sanitation improvements in third world countries. The Museum has a rare collection of facts, pictures and objects detailing the historic evolution of toilets from 2500 BC to date. It provides a chronological account of developments relating to technology, toilet related social customs, toilet etiquettes, prevailing sanitary conditions and legislative efforts of the times. It has an extensive display of privies, chamber-pots, toilet furniture, bidets and water closets in use from 1145 AD to the modern times. It also has a rare collection of beautiful poems related to toilet and its usage.

Le Musée des Vampires, France

The Musée des Vampires is a small private museum dedicated to vampires and the study of their place in folklore and modern culture. Located just on the outer edge of Paris, it can be a bit complicated to visit for non-French speakers, but it’s totally do-able and absolutely worth the effort if you’re a fan of vampires, mythology, and weird stuff in general! There are also autographs of every actor who’s ever starred as Dracula, a mummified cat from Paris’ famous Père Lachaise Cemetery, and a vampire painting by famous French murderer Nicolas Claux. This isn’t Twilight, but it sure is cool.

International Spy Museum, Washington DC, USA

The International Spy Museum, a museum exploring the craft, practice, history, and contemporary role of espionage, opened in Washington, DC on July 19, 2002. The International Spy Museum is the only public museum in the United States solely dedicated to espionage and the only one in the world to provide a global perspective on an all-but-invisible profession that has shaped history and continues to have a significant impact on world events. The museum features the largest collection of international espionage artefacts ever placed on public display. Many of these objects are being seen by the public for the first time. 59

“A Diamond is Forever”

Thousands of couples around the world get engaged on Valentines day, the most Romantic day of the year. But how long has giving a diamond ring to your loved one been a tradition? A man presents his prospective bride with an engagement ring upon acceptance of his marriage proposal. Anthropologists believe this tradition originated from a Roman custom in which wives wore rings attached to small keys, indicating their husbands’ ownership. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. This sparked a trend for diamond rings among European aristocracy and nobility. The sentimental Victorians popularized ornate engagement ring designs that mixed diamonds with other gemstones, precious metals and enamels. Often these rings were crafted in the shapes of flowers and were dubbed “posey rings.”

60

Diamond rings crafted during the Edwardian era continued the tradition of pairing diamonds with other jewels, commonly mounted in filigree settings. The opening of the DeBeers mines in Africa made diamonds more accessible. In the 1930s, when demand for diamond rings declined in the U.S. during hard economic times, the De Beers Company began an aggressive marketing campaign using photographs of glamorous movie stars swathed in diamonds. Within three years, the sales of diamonds had increased by 50 percent. In 1947, De Beers launched its now classic slogan: “A Diamond Is Forever” This campaign spurred even more sales. The implied durability of a diamond conveyed the meaning in the American psyche that marriage is forever. A diamond’s purity and sparkle have now become symbols of the depth of a man’s commitment to the woman he loves in practically all corners of the world. Diamonds still signify the celebration of a union and cherished memory, though more cuts make more styles an easy option for diamond lovers.
